http://forum.lugroma3.org/read.php?f=5i=1184t=1184

http://eciadsl.flashtux.org/index.php?lang=en

Spiacente, ciao :)

Ciao a tutti.

ldm_validate_partition_table(): Disk read failed

Cosa vuol dire?

Grazie,

[newbie-it] linux frizzato

2003-06-04 Per discussione Eraser Head
Ciao a tutti.

Grazie!

Buonasera a tutti,

prossimo avvio.

Faccio presente che sullo stesso pc girano mandrake 9.0 e windows me,

   directory $HOME/OpenOffice , HOME/.openoffice o simili

  Boh...
  Altre idee?

Appunto quello che succedeva a me.
 ls -a $HOME |grep -i office
 e rendile inoffensive.

Boh, non so proprio cosa fare...

Ciao,

basta premere Show di xvidtune.

ModeLine 1024x768 78.8 1024 1056 1152 1312 768 769 772 800 +hsync +vsync

 Oggi...accendo...boot...e mia sorpresa:
Kernel Panic: no init found. Try passing init= option to kernel!

 E tutto si blocca...
 E' morto??? E' recuparbile...o lo stiamo perdendo

Grazie a chi potrà darmi qualche dritta su come rimetterlo in
 strada...

cosa hai fatto prima di spegnerlo?
hai giocato con lilo/grub ?
hai spostato qualcosa ?
hai usato partition magic da win$
??

kernel panic indica :
- -problemi hardware (lo escluderei)
- -mancanza di qualche file
- -manomissioni in lilo.conf o inittab
- -movimenti nella tavola delle partizioni
- -mancanza di ramdisk
- -kernel ricompilato male
- -ecc..

 Buona giornata a tutti

SAMBA is for networking, not for localised file mounting/browsing.

The only 'networking' I do is by 56K modem to the Internet.

Do I have any reason to have SAMBA and/or NFS installed?

If not, I'll remove the packages.

Thanks,

Hard to say - what is it that you're trying to either open or view on

File Permissions are still a tricky issue for me, coming from single

You're not going to be able to do much about the file system permissions
of a FAT32 drive - no matter what you do - unless you run Windows -
otherwise, ain't no changing 'em whilst using linux. The OS is unable to
perform advanced functions on the files that live on a FAT32 drive; so
changing permissions or modifying them is moot.

   iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

I'm totally new to Linux. So bear with me.

  1. I don't have a directory /etc/fstab on my system. So I don't
know how to make a comparable entry.

Okay, I just realized /etc/fstab is a file. I opened it with
KWrite to see what's in it and all of the Windows drives are
showing up as vfat drives; as in:

 dev=/dev/fd0,fs=auto,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0
 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0
 /dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0
 /dev/hda6 /mnt/win_e vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0
 /dev/hda7 /mnt/win_f vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0

 This looks okay. Is it?

 What else to try?

Seems to me that the partitions are mountedm but not with user
accessbility. You need to add 'user' as in:

/dev/hdf6 /mnt/OldData vfat user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850 0 0

If you don't have rights in that directory/partition it will not
display the contents.

Remove them if you're not going to use them. You can save some system

I read somewhere that leaving out the umask=0 could cause that sort of
problem on fat drives.

Have you tried adding the umask=0 option to the /etc/fstab file? After
doing so, just umount /mnt/win_c followed by mount /mnt/win_c. Do
the same with the other drives.

It's as safe as anything. But just using it as a text editor -
well, you might want to consider using kedit, gedit, gxedit or kate
 - but hey, to each their own...

If the menu lists it as an editor, as it does with KWrite, you are ok.
Personally I use KWrite rather than KEdit because on this setup at
least the font is easier on the eyes. Pathetic, as I'm sure you can
change fonts, but I never bothered to.

Most applications that come in tarballs need to be compiled before they can
run. You need to cd to the folder in your home then run ./configure followed
by 'make' and 'make install' as root (or 'checkinstall' if you have the
checkinstall package installed)

But almost any application you might want is available as a Mandrake RPM
package which for a newbie is a *lot* easier to install. So what packages are
we talking about here?

I have road runner. All I had to do was enable the DHCPD client and reboot.
The rest happened automagically.

also, do you dock your gkrellm ie, gkrellm -w?

yep

I dock it to the right, and am just barely able to move it. It was easier

the bottom of it (maybe just the last pixel or so). There are settings in

also, there's this new feature, there's a one pixel border around the

I tried several ways, I'm sure MDK was one of them. I think MDK took me thru
several lilo configuration windows, but none that allowed windows to be
selected. There was one window that displayed a list (6 radio button
choices) from which to select a default, but each selection was exactly the
same, something like, /dev/hda... The first one was selected. Maybe I
should have selected the button in the same position as 'windows' is on the
lilo boot display. 6 choices, all the same doesn't seem right to me.

The risks may be small, but last year the openssh project site (I think

in the download area. It was about a week before anyone noticed.

To put someones gpg identity on your key ring. Download their public key

terminal enter ' gpg --import key_file_name'

The problem is often that the rpm's aren't signed to begin with...

Most applications that come in tarballs need to be compiled before they can
run. You need to cd to the folder in your home then run ./configure
followed by 'make' and 'make install' as root (or 'checkinstall' if you
 have the checkinstall package installed)

But almost any application you might want is available as a Mandrake RPM
package which for a newbie is a *lot* easier to install. So what packages
 are we talking about here?

Also, if you untar as root you are placing root permissions on the folders
which will prevent your normal user from saving anything. Do all your
untarring and compiling as user and then install as root.

Mike, I haven't tried it that way, so I may be off-beam. Seems to me
possible though that you are mis-reading it. It's likely that it's
saying that it's booting from hda - i.e. that is where it will get
the lilo and /boot configuration.

In your lilo.conf there will be a line at or near the beginning on the
lines of

boot=/dev/hda

Could be wrong, but have another look at mcc and see if this is what

Yes, its hooked to eth0. This is odd, I just went into MCC - services and
according to that, dhcp is turned on, set to run at boot, but is currently
stopped. None of the buttons from the MCC services section would start it.

I also tried (as su) service dhcpd start...and stop, and restart. Also used
dhcp. Still no difference.

Any ideas? Thanks! :-)

 Hello,

Having just had the same problem, I can say that (thanks to Joeb's help)

using Mandrake Control and selecting the boot icon, then DrakBoot gets
 you to
a place where you can select No, I don't want autologin. This solved
 my
problem in 9.0, and assumes that you don't want auto login (or want the

 re-adding
it, also brought back the dragon (until a reboot), if you have knowledge

 other

Just go through the wizard in MandrakeControlCentreNetwork and tick the box

Ron, go into the install software mode and do a search for dhcp. You need dhcpcommon and dhcpclient and the dhcpd if I recall. Not sure but any one of those can be a show stopper if not installed. HTH Dennis M.

 Thanks guys!

I recommend getting a router/firewall to protect yourself from Road

firewalls...I think both sides are equally right and that you should
also work the local firewall of your PC, too. However, if you get a
Linksys, D-Link, or what-have-you, there's future growth for other
PC's to be added without having to rely on any one box to filter out
the bad guys. Besides, no Linux user WANTS to have only one Linux PC.
Right? So, think ahead for when you'll have two, three, four,
five ;-)

The ability to go fast is not excuse for doing so. ;-)

Sir Robin

Regarding point 2, just put a:

ifup ppp0

in an appropriate /etc/init.d file. Doing this will cause it to
automatically redial if the link dies. Is that what you wanted?
I now use DSL, but back in the dial-up days, I used a script controlled
by a simple flag file mechanism to enable anyone on my home LAN to put
the link up or down. You are welcome to that if the solution above is
too inflexible.
I'm not sure if your script is what I'm looking for, but I'd like to see
it (it would also be useful to post it here for the benefit of the masses!).

And a word to KDE developers - the user-friendly graphic help pages are
very nice, but please write man pages in the normal format. A Linux/Unix
app without a man page is like a Perl script without perldoc.

Not a leg-pull. I can't tell you what the difference is, but it
exists. For instance, on my keyboard, if I use Rt-Alt+4 I get , but
if I use left-Alt + 4 I get nothing at all.

On some keyboards the left Alt key is marked Alt and the right Alt is
marked Alt Gr. I have no idea what the Gr stands for, but I assume
that the two keys were marked differently for a good reason!

That is part of the problem. I get no messages in konsole and all that happens

if you did then rpm -e iscan and reinstall it as it should pick everything up.
ive noticed this in the past that iscan needs to be installed after the

First place to check: cat /proc/bus/usb/devices

For my machine the vendor # is 0x04b8 and the Product # is 0x1001

once you've found the Product # you can modprobe:

 modprobe scanner vendor=0x04b8 product=0x0110

create the device file in /dev:

 mknod /dev/usbscanner0 c 180 48

then edit your /etc/sane.d or /usr/local/etc/sane.d:
