RE: [newbie] ABit KT7-RAID Motherboaard

2001-01-05 Per discussione Mike Tracy Holt

You have ATA/100 out of the box, just enable HD optimisations.

RAID on IDE isn't really RAID but a software/firmware
 implementation, very
bastardized. You should be able to run dual boot with a windows RAID and
linux on the non-RAID partitions, and linux will see the RAID
 incorrectly so
 no file exchange.

There are four competing RAIDs for IDE, all secret. None work with linux
because they are not really hardware RAIDs. (check it out--you
 get ONE RAID
partition). There is a better implementation of RAID (pure software)
available on linux, but though the manufacturers admit it is better than
theirs, none will risk their "Intellectual Property". For the opinion of
Andre Hedrick, the guru of ide for the linux kernel, see this article.

 http://www.mandrakeforum.com/article.php3?sid=20001127032845

If you want real RAID, get SCSI.

 Civileme

Pardon the intrusion...
I'm running four striped ide disk drives from a Promise UDMA/66 Fasttrak
RAID card and the performance is great! Only drawback is that Promise only
wrote drivers for Redhat 6.2/7.0. However, the README included with the zip
file says that you can compile your kernel against this module if you want
to use another distribution. You can check them out here:

 http://support.promise.com/Support

I don't know the specifics behind the modules, but I know I'm getting faster
performance than I did without the RAID card installed and I'm able to
multi-boot this computer between Win98, Win2000 and Redhat 7.0 just as I did
without the card. The motherboard bios starts then kicks over to the
Promise bios, then to the MBR that's written across my four hard drives that
are configured as one array.
I just built a computer for a friend and installed the Fasttrak100 driver
and two ATA100 striped drives, quake 3 arena is unbelievable!

RE: [newbie] Wondering

2000-12-24 Per discussione Mike Tracy Holt

That's an interesting answer... I've done kernel rebuilds quite a few times
with quite varied outcomes. It almost always works, yet very seldom does it
work better than it did before the rebuild. What I would like to see on my
Christmas wish list is if some talented individual could make up some cheat
sheets for the most common setups that would cover all the options that you
are faced with on a rebuild. I've noticed that after the most obvious
questions, I get faced with some that are, too me, very cryptic. Don't get
me wrong, it's fun to play with that stuff; but at the end of the day, I
would like to have my computer running the way I want and be able to play
quake or type an email.

I guess I said all that too say this: Don't start compiling until you've
had a look at a few howtos on the hardware that you're using. I've found
that the stock kernel usually comes with everything tweaked just fine -
compile if you need some cool new feature that's not made it's way into that
kernel yet (like ide RAID; Promise has a driver available for redhat 6.2 and
7 but not for any other distro).

Mike

I've found that most of the time getting the kernel to compile
 and work is a
matter of getting the whole thing configured properly.

RE: [newbie] Windows 98 Defrag and Linux Partitions

2000-10-22 Per discussione Mike Tracy Holt

There are a couple of different reasons for this. First, make sure you're
not filling your harddrive to full - defrag re-arranges stuff by picking up
blocks and putting them at the end of the drive and moving stuff back - if
you're harddrive is more than %80 full, that makes the job much slower.
Second, make sure you have enough RAM and processor for the job - if you
have a two 45GB drives with a 233 pentium and 32megs of RAM, that's going to
take all night. Third, make sure you keep up with the job - try to defrag a
few times a month. I'm sorry if these sound like obvious things, but on my
700 Athlon w/512 megs of RAM I can defrag my Win98 partition in about 10-30
minutes, depending on the state it's in.

Windows 98's defrag is insane. I mean, you have to begin a defrag at
11:00pm,
and run it all night! Very inefficient.

RE: [newbie] Windows 98 Defrag and Linux Partitions

2000-10-22 Per discussione Mike Tracy Holt

Ok, a few comments here...

Clicked OK to a few things and it comes to the partitioning tool.
I resized my 20 gig windows partition down to around 13 to 15 gigs, and
clicked "Auto Allocate" and it automatically created 4 partitions.( swap,
root, usr, home, or whatever order it was).

First, I never let Linux play with my Windows partitions. When it comes to
moving things around, I either decide before loading anything to the disk
how I'm going to slice it up or I use Partition Magic. This may seem
unrelated, but I wonder if Mandrake is trying to make an extended partition
in which to enclose both Windows and Linux - that could affect your mbr.

After everything is working fine, if I go right into safe mode and load up
defrag and let it run, I end up with an unbootable machine since grub can't
read the linux partition.

Why are you going into 'safe-mode' to run defrag? 'Safe-mode' on Windows
machines is only for repairing your system. An example would be if you
installed new software or drivers that renders your machine unbootable, you
would go into 'safe-mode' and thus only the minimal drivers necessary to run
your machine would be loaded and you could uninstall whatever had caused the
problem. System utilities such as Scandisk and defrag can / should be run
from 'normal-mode' (turn off your screen savers and the junk in your system
tray).

I'm just reading another of your posts so I'll just splice it in here

Partition table before defrag:

Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 2491 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

   Device BootStart EndBlocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 1657 13309821c Win95 FAT32 (LBA)
/dev/hda2 1658 2491 66991055 Extended
/dev/hda5 1658 1688248976 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda6 1689 1726305203+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda7 1727 2081 2851506 83 Linux
/dev/hda8 2082 2491 3293293+ 83 Linux

During the defrag, there were no screen savers enabled, I was in safe mode,
and no other programs but defrag were loaded at the time and I let defrag
do
its stuff overnight, then when I woke up, it said it was done and asked if
I
wanted to exit it, and I said yes, and then I rebooted hoping to go back to
normal mode and only shown a grub prompt.

The partition table after a defrag ends up wiping out hda7, moving hda8's
start point to hda6's start point and thus making overlapping partitions.
(I checked that by typing rescue on the boot of the linux-mandrake CD and
typing "fdisk -l")

I think this may confirm my previous thoughts; you say that you're booting
to safe-mode, going to bed and letting it do it's work. Could it be that
since you used a non-windows utility to move your windows partition around
without really telling windows what was going on, then you boot to safe-mode
to run defrag (safe-mode by it's very nature being for repairs), maybe
windows is trying to 'fix' what it perceives to be a damaged partition
table? Remember, changing your partition table on your active system
partition is different than just resizing an extended partition, and even
doing that non-destructively is quite a feat. Try either using Partition
Magic from Win98 to do your partitioning BEFORE installing Mandrake, then
just allocate the unused space - or if you're not worried about losing
Win98, wipe the whole drive with fdisk and slice the drive up however you
intend, then install Win98 to the partition you intend and Linux to it's
partition. However you do it, don't let the linux installer touch your
existing partition table, only let it play with the un-allocated (blank)
space.

If a problem with the partition table happens, how do you get the ability
to
boot back into linux without losing anything even when a restore of the
partition table and boot sector couldn't do that? I have no problem
getting
back into windows (brutally with fdisk /mbr) but then I have no way of
getting back into my linux (and don't know how in grub) and I simply just
wipe out the linux partition and reinstall (partly because I didn't have
much important stuff on it at the time anyways).

If the partition table is actually ruined, you will not be able to get in
without some pretty high tech equipment. If it's just you mbr that's
broken, your boot disk that you make during installation will get you in.

I hope that's helped some, I can't tell you the exact reasons why (I'm not a
computer science major) but I can tell you that this is what I do and it
works every time.

If your PC is going slow, format the drive or delete the partition, and

Microsoft Scandisk should NEVER have been invented..!

Ouch! I wouldn't go that far. Scandisk does work well, I have had it find
and fix errors for me without a hitch. I currently multi-boot linux, win98,
win2000 pro and win 2000 server (server is for educational purpose) and
there has been even more in the past. I've had only one problem with an OS
corrupting another's filesystem and that was a bug in the windows 2000 mbr
recovery tool. Scandisk shouldn't be any kind of problem as long as you're
not trying to use it on your Linux partition (which I don't think is even
possible?)

hmm, maybe i'm just naive but so what if MS bails out Corel as far as
linux
goes. There is/was nothing stopping MS from creating their own
distribution
of linux nor stopping them from building applications for Linux. I
can't
believe that there aren't any MS programmers running linux at
home (or
at

   somewhere in that company.

Just a thought here. Corel has successfully (not in my opinion but in the
minds of some) ported their Office suite to Linux using Wine. If you dig
very
deeply you find that within MS there's a debate about whether they
should/shouldn't produce MS Office for Linux. Could there be a
connection?
Spin is everything these days it seems. Just thought I'd suggest
that this
story might have a positive spin in the end.

7.2 is pretty good, lots of good improvements. On 'upgrade' from 7.1 it
didn't do so well; wasn't able to detect my network after the upgrade,
couldn't setup my printer from the installer (which I've never been able
to
do) and a few other minor details. When I did the fresh install however,
it DID recognize my network and even had a driver/filter for my printer!
(Epson 860 on the USB port). On the downside, kde needs LOTS of work
(wouldn't close 'x' without ctrl-alt-backspace) and sound doesn't work out
of the box though the correct modules were configured and are being
loaded.
Overall, there are some awesome new features - I would call it more of an
'alpha' release at this stage though.

hmmm...sound, printer, network, etc. all working fine here...and no trouble
closing kde either...mileage does vary...

Yeah, I've noticed that to be true. At any rate however, I believe that
there is still a LOT of work to be done seeing that 7.1 and below have
worked fine on this same box (pretty standard hardware).

I built an Athlon system about 3-4 months ago and started out with the Abit
motherboard which would NOT work even after trying 2 different boards. I
switched to Asus K7V and it works great! I haven't really heard anything
good about the onboard ATA100 nor abit for Athlon. My system is as follows:

Asus K7V
Athlon 700
Matrox G400
SoundBlaster live
512 MB RAM
2x 20 hdd's
Win2k pro, server, Win98, Linux-Mandrake 7.1, and have had Suse 7.0 loaded
all at the same time without problems.

Mike

Has anyone managed to get any distro to work with an AMD Athlon Thunderbird
an Abit KA7-100 motherboard ? machine runs windows NT fine, installs
Redhat, but it fails with a kernel panic when trying to start for the first
time, Gentus Linux ( rebadged Redhat supplied with the motherboard) would
not even complete the installation and Caldera wouldn't install (fortunately
it failed quickly :). The machine is not overclocked.

RE: [newbie] Installing Linux-Mandrake 7.1 on Windows Me

2000-09-03 Per discussione Mike Tracy Holt

I kind of figured that was the case. I'm in the process of installing
7.2beta and just before rebooting the system, I got a message that it
couldn't be installed on this version of Windows (2000), so that makes
sense. Not knowing the level of experience that the writer has had, I just
wanted to cover the basics.

Mike

Mike,

He is trying to install Mandrake on a seperate partition apart from
Windows. He was attempting to start the install either from inside
Windows, or from a CDROM setup disk. Not sure which one, but at any rate
Windows ME was kickin up a fuss. I'm really not at all surprised really.

All he's got to do is boot the CDROM as one user has already pointed
out. This will start the installation process and he can then define the
Linux partitions that will be needed for the Mandrake install.

Linux is an OS in it's own right so you don't need to do that (if that was

to

Is there a way around the idiotic no MS-DOS program installed to

mainly because I wasn't that impressed with Red Hat. However, I can not
install due to Window's Me. I'm thinking I could just boot from CD and
install that way, like I did with Red Hat, but not totally sure, as there
is
two CD's and don't want to mess anything up.. Oh, for clarification's

 here's my specs

 AMD K6/2 500 Mhz
 ASUS P5A Mobo
Diamond Viper V770 (AGP) 32 MB
 Diamond Multimedia Sound II (MX2000)
 U.S Robotics 56K v.90
 160 MB SDRAM PC100
 15 GB HD
3.5 GB HD (Empty, where I want to put Mandrake)
 Generic IDE 40X CD-ROM
 Microsoft Force Feedback Pro Joystick

I think that about covers it, I think the only problems with my Hardware

RE: [newbie] ISO files

The iso image already is bootable so you should be able to just use the iso
cd. I've just downloaded nero to try out on win2000 (because the idiots at
Adaptec don't feel they should have to support their software with win2k),
but with easy cd creator under win98 you just double click on the iso file
and it does the rest. With nero I believe that the option to make a
bootable cd is if you copy raw data and specify an 'image file' (such as
cdrom.img found under the /images directory) to be burned onto the root
directory. The idea behind the iso image being premade is so that you can
just put that file on a disk and all the preparation work has been done for
you.

Mike

hey,
I just downloaded the ISO files for Mandrake 7.1 (650MB and 340MB) now
how exactly do I burn them? I'm using Nero software which give's you an
option to burn CD (ISO) or CD (Boot), etc. my system supports the boot
from CD, I'm just not sure how burning an ISO file on a CD will make it
bootable...

To be honest with you - I haven't had ANY luck running Q3. Dacia on this
list has had better luck using the voodoo cards, but I'm using a Matrox G400
max (which was supposed to work with this game - out of the box) which has
not worked at all. I've tried xf3.3.x, xf4; I've tried using SuSE 7.0
(which I was able to grab off of a German mirror which has since been
closed??) as well as every version of Mandrake that I've upgraded to - it's
been very disappointing.

On the other hand, I also have Q2 which uses software rendering and works
great! I love to frag! I'm anxiously awaiting the day that I can actually
use my copy of Q3 - I've even considered buying a new voodoo just so I can,
but I just built this system to add to my home network and that was a couple
thousand - my wife has confiscated my piggy bank for awhile...

Larry, I think you missed the point of the original message. Sometimes
people need to just be honest that yes, Linux has made a lot of improvements
but still does have some of it's own problems. That's all it was - not a
slam to Linux or Mandrake or anyone else. Of course, everybody has their
own take on that depending on their experience, and how they got where
they're at. The problem is that sometimes people try to deny that Linux has
any problems at all, which just isn't true and that's what led to the long
string of replies in this thread. That's the jist of the thread and yes,
win2k does support usb (and I believe that one of the service packs also
brought it to NT 4 - not sure on that however).

Mike

I can hardly believe this thread. There is no way in hell that any os
company
(even ms) can have enough time and resources to write drivers for all the
hardware out there. I repeat ... not even MS. Off the top of my head,
x86
Linux has better hardware support then any other os except ms win95/98.
Does
win2k/nt do usb? what about ce? Also, if more hardware companies would
write
unified drivers then that would solve a number of problems. Think Nvidia
and
not 3dfx in the future. Incidentally, 3dfx is a dinosaur and will be
extinct
 very soon.

2000-08-19 Per discussione Mike Tracy Holt

This was in response to Roman, not your message; surprise though, I do have
another response! g

--- Actually --- my point is that Linux users need to pick the right
hardware. Don't purchase a winmodem and then expect it to work under
Linux.

Why not? It's intel platform and if one OS can do it, then so can another
;-)

--- My second point was that by choosing the right hardware, the
installation is very easy. I don't use a cd/rw for an office machine. A
typical office machine is used by someone who sets appointments, sends
email, prints documents. The people in these types of jobs don't
typically
burn a cd. My example was that an office Linux box is very fast to
install.
It really is very fast. And I grant to everyone - that if a cd/rw was put
in to the box -- or I was expected to put games on the machine - I'd
choose
different video, different amounts of RAM - and I wouldn't say that
 configuring Linux is fast.

I have my computer(s) here at home set up with multiple OS's and they're all
capable of handling whatever task I put to them.

--- Next, when I go to the store, I never expect any new hardware that I
purchase to work with the equipment that I already have ... upgrading
 hardware rarely works. snip

What?!? Do you replace your computer everytime you buy a new piece of
hardware??? I don't have that kind of money.

Wouldn't you really like to look at
the code behind Windows? -- and then be able to tell your neighbor. :-)

Not especially, Windows is Windows, Linux is Linux - I like them both for
what they do.

Mike

Re: Re[2]: [newbie] OT Linux gaming OT

But - seriously - with the right parts Linux is very easy to install.

This doesn't seem ok, having to choose my hardware according to what
  OS I want to use.

You are absolutely correct. I wish I could run Win98 on my Amiga. For
that
matter, it would be really neat if I could run Win2000 on my Mac. :)

Disclaimer: I'm far from a *nix expert. I've only been using Linux on a
regular basis for a couple of months. I actually like Windoze. I've been
a
computer geek for 19 years playing with various hardware during that time.
So I found your comment quite humorous.

No OS is going to work on every piece of hardware. It just isn't going to
happen. In order to get the most stable system you want, you need to
match
your hardware to your OS. All the big boys do it. That is why
Dell/Gateway/whoever won't support a workstation that was sold with Win98
but now has Win2000. We deal with this constantly at work...

I also wonder if there is any other OS that supports as many different
 architectures as Linux (x86 - PCs, 68k - Mac / Amiga, PPC - Mac /
whoknows,
 and countless others).

 Just my $.02...

 Jon

I don't think that's quite what he meant Jon, and it's those sort of answers
that keep the divide so wide between different OS users. Picking hardware
is different than picking an entire platform; when I go to the computer
store to buy a cd/rw, I bring it home - plug it in - load the software
(under windows) and I'm up burning cd's within the hour. Under Linux, it's
going to require a kernel recompile (if you didn't previously have a burner
attached) to start with; a task that's not really for the beginner! I've
compiled my kernel a number of times, and while I'm getting better at it,
I'm still no expert.

I understand that quite a number of people that use linux now were once (if
not still) windows users, and are possibly still mad at Bill; that's what
we're really talking about here. Is Windows really horrible at everything?
Is Linux REALLY better with the average desktop app? Come on, be honest! I
use all those same apps, you're not kidding anybody! I'm studying for my
MCSE, but I really want to work with Linux and Unix - I also want to play
with Mac - I LOVE COMPUTERS!!!

Let's stop the quibbling, the truth is obvious - people love to hate Bill.
Let's just realize where we're at and then we can be clear about where we
want to go.

The hex editing is on io.sys. It changes verious messages, such as the
starting windows 98 message. You can edit some other messages in there,
 browse through it.

There is no hex editing needed to change the logo. The logos are stored in
 the files c:\logo.sys c:\windows\logos.sys c:\windows\logow.sys and, in
windows 98, c:\windows\logow.w98. You can edit them in paintshop or most
 other image editors.

I completely agree with you; I've been frustrated for the last four months
that I haven't been able to play quake 3 even though the box said my card
was supported! I spent $40 on a game that I can't use and I've tried the
howto's and all with no luck. The closest I've been to getting X working
with it was loading SuSE 7.0 (just released) and I still have so many lines
across the screen that I can't begin to play the game - I can just tell that
my old problem is gone (choppy video and way to much delay to actually
play).

Linux may at some point rival Windows on the home users desktop, but I don't
think it will be in the very near future; if that's the end goal, then it
will have to become A LOT more intuitive and user manageable (i.e. - buy a
game or an app off of the shelf, put the cdrom in the computer, few minutes
later you're off and running).

Mike

p.s. - I still love Linux!

Its true, but when I want to play a game I want to
play a game not spend three days upgrading X and
checking dependencies so I can play.

For example, I have spent the last week trying to
 install X 4.01 so I can use my voodoo5 in linux. I
have totally ruined my install 3 times. I actually
got it working once but my mouse wouldn't work. I
turned the computer off and went to bed. When I
booted the next morning X wouldn't even start.

Windows 98 first edition took the card fine. No
problems. Works great out of the box. I've been
playing games in windows for a week. Yesterday I
bought, installed and played Unreal Tournament. It
was about as easy as that too.

Now, before you go off on me for not being hardcore
enough about linux let me say that I use linux because
I enjoy the challenge. I get frustrated just like any
other person though. All of this is to support my
explanation that windows is an excellent gaming
playform. Like a nintendo on steroids.

By the way, has anyone managed to install 4.01 and get
a voodoo5 running? Mind sharing with me how you did
it? I've followed the directions on Xfree86.org for
upgrading to 4.01 and I've installed the 3dfx drivers
but all I get is software mode or my mouse slides to
the bottom right hand corner of the screen and stays
 there. ug.

2000-08-13 Per discussione Mike Tracy Holt

It works. There's one thing...Why would you need another loader if Grub is
 working?

It's just alternative to grub. If you have to use NT on the same box as
linux, you do have the option of using a pretty easy to configure bootloader
(NT bootloader). Since with any OS, there are several ways to get from
point A to point B, I find it nice to see how many of those ways I can
learn. Makes it easier to trouble shoot problems, etc; and for someone
who's maybe just experimenting with linux and who isn't quite ready to turn
their system over to linux, it's a great solution.

It was fun, wasn't it? :-)

Well, that's not entirely true.
1st. - Linux does have it's roots in networking and really shines in that
area; Apple is still the choice for graphics artists that I've heard from;
and Windows pretty much has the home desktop market.

2nd. - Linux versions of the popular Win games are known to run at lower
frame rates and be just a little rough around the edges. I still haven't
been able to play Quake 3 for linux, though I bought a copy about 4 months
ago because it was supposed to support my Matrox G400 card out-of-the-box.
I've come closest to running it when I installed SuSE 7.0 a few days ago. I
d/l'd SuSE because they do a lot of xfree work and they were the first to
support my ATI Rage Fury video card when that came out. It still doesn't
play Quake though; I've got video and audio playing at the correct speed
(was choppy and in slow motion), now I just have lines across the screen and
can't see what's going on.

You see, I can buy a game off the shelf for windows, put it in the cdrom and
start playing within a few minutes.

Anyone know if the GAIM that comes with 7.1 works, or has AOL sabotage the

 Any suggestions?

I believe if you go back to the 'newbie archive' from the mandrake home

importance of talking about every aspect of computing and how it compares to

Really easy... first you need to boot into linux and move lilo to your /
directory or your /boot directory, whichever one you're using. Do this
by editing the first line in /etc/lilo.conf to point to /dev/hda(x) (x
being the partition number that your boot or / directory lives on) and
then run lilo to set your changes. Next, do:

 dd if=/dev/hda(x) of=bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1

This will drop a bootable image called bootsect.lnx into the directory
that you're sitting in when you run the command. Copy this file to your
 NT or Windows 'C' partition.

Finally, add a line to the bottom of your boot.ini file like this:

 C:\bootsect.lnx="whatever_you_want"

Save the file and exit. Next time you boot, you should see the NT
bootloader giving you the option to boot into Linux.

Make sure you comment out the 'prompt' and 'timeout' lines in lilo.conf
before you do the 'dd' step so you won't have to answer questions on
 both bootloaders.

Sorry to butt in; you don't really have to configure any type of partition
when installing Windows. You can start with an unformatted drive, then you
choose if you want to use FAT 16 or FAT 32 for the filesystem (do you want
to enable large disk support?). M$ sort of did a number on the public with
their goofy naming scheme; 'Dos' is something similar to the bash, sh or
whatever you *nix shell you want to think of, but they also named their
kernel 'Dos'. Now with newer Windows products, the Dos shell is mostly just
a crippled way of doing things from the command line. It's not necessary,
but it exits anyway.

 Hi Mike,

This may sound stupid but is this all done from within Linux /sbin
 directory?
In must have a programming block but the following command:

 dd if=/dev/hda(x) of=bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1

Do I log in as 'root' and change directories to /sbin, and then type in:

 dd if=/dev/hda8 of=bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1

Press the 'enter' key, and then copy it to my C partition?

 Roman
 Registered Linux User #179293

Yes, I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that. You would need to be logged
in as root (or su to root), then do all the above (except about change
directories; if you're root, /sbin is already in your path). Just log in as
root and stay in root's home directory and execute those commands - this
will drop the bootsect.lnx file into your root home directory instead of
/sbin.

It was definitely a learning experience in boot loading.

Well, you need a boot loader for linux to load (just like NT needs a boot
loader), you just don't have to see the second one. If you use the NT
bootloader and you comment out the prompt in lilo - or grub, you can have a
seemless entry into linux after you choose it from the boot menu. It would
work the same way if you used grub to boot NT and took out the timeout in
your boot.ini file.

Have fun!

Make sure to have your linux boot floppy handy, you'll need it after windows

Hi Mike. Thanks for the reply. Well, I don't mean two FS types on the
same Zip cartridge. I mean, the ability to change out (in one session
without logging out), a vfat Zip cartridge, and then put in an ext2 Zip
cartridge. I CAN do this as root, right now. A right-click as root on
the Zip icon on my KDE desktop gives me the option to mount the drive as
either vfat or ext2. Works like a charm. However, from my normal user
account, it won't let me mount ext2, because it says only root can use
"mount". Vfat is the default listing in my fstab file, and it allows my
normal user to use vfat Zip cartridges. It just won't let me use ext2.
 ;-(

Maybe my question should really be: How can I let my normal user account
use "mount" without compromising security? ;-)

 --

Oh! I'm sorry, late nights - you know :-o Anyway, instead of listing
'vfat' in /etc/fstab, switch the entry to 'auto', you should then be able to
mount any file that your kernel supports. Formatting may be another story,
but if the file system already exits, then you should be able to mount, etc.

Wow! Take it easy, eh? I think it was just question.
Mike

The idea of **NOT** dropping everything you choose to **DELETE** into the
recycle/trash bin, is that the user is **SMART** enough to judge whether
he/she
really wants to delete that particular file. The same idea behind the
KDE one click, the user is smart enough to know that they made the
right choice with the **FIRST** click, and does not need to verify every
choice they make. Personally I agree, anything else is a step backwards.

The question is: Are **YOU** smart enough?

  Dear friends:

I have been using KDE for over a year now, beginning with Red Hat 6.0,
then Linux Mandrake 6.1, then Linux Mandrake 7.0 and now Linux Mandrake
7.1. Very pleased, all in all.

Yet, one thing that continues to mystify me is the Trash can. My KDE
1.1.1 manual tells me that you can drag n drop files from the File
Manager into the Trash can. Well, that' s no different and actually more
cumbersome than going into an xterm and typing rm file.xxx. Okay, I am
willing to accept that as a graphical way of doing it.

What I would REALLY like to know is if there is a way for the KDE Trash
to function the way it the Recycle Bin does in Windows: that is, to help
you save a file that you ACCIDENTALLY deleted. Now that would be
something. In Windows 95 and above, any file you inadvertently delete is
not actually deleted but dumped in the Recycle Bin, from which you can
always retrieve it. Similarly in Win3.1, by using Sentry, you can
retrieve lost files. Can KDE's Trash do the same? Will it be able to do
it in KDE2? Is there any way to do this in LM 7.1? Does the new Reiser
File System have anything to do with this? We all know how easy it is to
inadvertently lose a file, especially if you are a newbie and especially
if you have come from Windows and are used to having the Recycle Bin
  rescue you from your mistakes.

If this key function is not yet available in Linux, it certainly ought
to be. At least in my opinion. And especially for user-friendly distros,
including the one I am using, Linux Mandrake.

  Thanks so much for listening.

Netscape is a little buggy, that's well documented; what exactly is
going on when it freezes? Have you made your changes and then you're
surfing along and it freezes or do you click on preferences and it
freezes right then? Possibly it's trying to resolve it's host and
you're trying to get it to do something else at the same time? Maybe
make sure it's completely done loading and you're sitting on your home
page then do your editing (when it first loads, it will have the
irritating splash screen that won't go away until you do something on
screen; that will have to finish before you can do your thing). One
final thing, try starting netscape with -no-about-splash option.

Hope that helps, Mike

You can get gnucash from here:

Not to start a flame-fest here, but think about it Mark; how often do
you here about the artists complaining? Yes, there have been a few; but
most often you're hearing from the recording industry people, the ones

$17 for a compact disk that costs no more than about .05 cents to make!
If you look at the artists cut (somewhere about $3 - $5), where's the

artists who have been sued by and attacked by the RIAA for trying to
release THEY'RE music in mp3 format? I don't have a problem with paying
someone for their intellectual property, but in this case - are we?

To bring the topic back to this list, even though you're completely

Try using knapster and signing up as a new user. You don't have to go

Hi Benjamin, (I don't know if I mentioned it, but that's my son's name

I don't know if you've noticed but you can right-click on any file and
select 'move to trash' (it's right above 'delete'). Personally I rather
like that you don't have to first delete and then empty the recycle
bin. You're actually creating the file again in another directory. How
many times do you really need to be asked 'do you *REALLY* want to
delete this file???'

Have fun, Mike

I don't think that you can because you're actually mounting one block

Why not just make the whole thing dos and you would be able to access it

If you've got your system up and running, type 'lilo' at the command
line (as root) and you'll have lilo (make sure to edit the
/etc/lilo.conf file to reflect your system needs). If you want to use
grub, cd to /boot/grub and type (from the command line as root) 'sh

If I understand you correctly, you're saying that 26 lines is only a

I'm sorry Alexander, but there's no way that 3 lines of text from an email

Re: [newbie] Text v. HTML messages on this list

2000-07-15 Per discussione Mike Tracy Holt

Hello again,
I've been reading the posts on this subject (as I'm sure most have), and
they do seem to have a common couple of threads that I would like to give a
quick comment on.
As I've already said, I do prefer HTML myself but there is a difference
between HTML enabled and creating a web page to send to the list. HTML
enabled gives the ability to underline a word for example where, as some
people have mentioned, adding midi sounds is just retarded! Just saying
that an email is HTML doesn't mean that it was written using Macromedia
backstage and will be a 10 minute download, and that's what I compare to
people who have a half page signature on every post or people who endlessly
comment on posts without trimming off the irrelevent parts - most things
like that are just common sense. I may not trim a message if I feel that it
has important info in the body of the previous posts and sometimes I might
just forget, but I think gentle reminders work just fine. For any of those
that have done HTML coding, you'll know that the text behind an HTML page is
all that you're sending to the list. It's not the same as writing and
compiling a program, the email client that reads it does the putting
together and display; so unless there are graphics (which again, save the
pictures of the kids for off list) or sound (duh, does this really have to
even be mentioned?), the file is really no larger than a simple text file
(except for a few instructional tags which are simply text themselves).

My second thought would be toward the security risks. I use both Linux and
Win98 / Win2k, as I know others on this list do. When you're on the Linux
box, any malacious Javascript or VB program won't effect you - VB won't run
on Linux without Wine (which you would have to download and setup
specifically to run that VB program, and then, well...), and Netscape
crashes on most Java pages so c'mon! Seriously though, a virus written for
one OS, will not hurt another without being ported to that system. When
you're on the M$ systems, just keep a virus program running in the
background and follow simple hygene, don't open attachments unless you know
who / what sent them and why, etc

I'm sorry for the long post, but I feel strongly about this and think it's
important enough to think about. I've noticed that there are just a hand
full of people who always seem to jump on a guy the first time he / she
sends a message using HTML but it seems that most people don't care that
much. I too, have about 350 messages come through by box (changelog,
cooker, newbie and expert lists) and that's not counting normal mail; it
took no more than a couple of minutes to download these when I was using a
regular modem (now dsl), and I always had the option of removing myself from
one or more of the lists if I thought it was too much.

Thanks to all for your patience,
Mike

Re: [newbie] Text v. HTML messages on this list

2000-07-14 Per discussione Mike Tracy Holt

I agree with you about the HTML; I've found that some people can be agitated
by the use of it. I think it is unreasonable to suggest that just because
*some* people (for sentimental or whatever reasons) want to cling to archaic
text only mail readers, that nobody should be able to use HTML. I've also
noticed that some (not all) of the people that claim HTML is evil tend to
have a .signature file that takes half a page!! (I find that more annoying
than embedded links) The complaint from 'text only' mail readers though, is
that the mail readers don't know how to handle the HTML tags in the body of
the message and therefore display all the tags making it difficult to read
the message (my answer would be to use Netscape or Mozilla!!) BUT text is
the rule of this list however, so we should abide by that :(

Just my two cents!
Mike

A correspondent made a plea, not an unreasonable one but one with which
I may not entirely agree, that messages be posted in text only and not
 in HTML.

I, for one, find that with HTML one can be more expressive and
informative in conveying important information. I also believe that
those who limit themselves strictly to text are not able to benefit from
the richness that the web and discussion groups have to offer. My
analogy is the difference between color TV and black-and-white TV, or a
book devoid of illustrations v. a plain typewritten page.

Personally I don't understand the reluctance to embrace HTML. However,
I am prepared to be guided by the members of the list who may feel
strongly about this issue one way or the other. If you would like to
send your comments to me over the next 5 days, I will summarize and post
 the results of this inquiry.

in the upper left corner and save the image to your $user account. Next,
open the image in the gimp and find the 'scale' tool (works a lot like
'crop') and scale the image down to the size you want for a desktop icon
then choose 'save as' and name the file whatever.xpm choosing 'xpm' as the
file extension from the drop down list. Finally, close the gimp and right
click on the file that you saved choosing to open with the 'icon editor' and
you'll see your icon not only magnified, but in block form so you can erase
the parts you don't want and add to it whatever you want.

Maybe not as easy as just getting the other version, but it's kind of fun to
play with all the extra software that comes preconfigured on your Mandrake
system.

Mike

 Hi,

The rpm version does not have icons or .xpms. You will have to go back
 to www.real.com
and download rp7_linux20_libc6_i386_b2.bin. It's a larger install and
 it provides the icons(.xpms).

You must login as 'root', and download the file to your 'root'
directory. After the download, open up xterm or console, and type in the
 following:

 A)
 chmod u+x rp7_linux20_libc6_i386_b2.bin

 B) Press the 'enter' key

 C) It will create an installation directory in root called
ILINXR.install or something like that. It's been some time since I've
 installed it. Type in: ./INSTALL

 D)
Install it to /usr/X11R6/bin/RealPlayer7. Actually it can be installed
to /usr/local but that's a matter of preference.
 E) Navigate to the RealPlayer 7 folder and copy rp7.xpm(this is the
 large icon) to /usr/share/icons
 F) Copy the rp7mini.xpm icon file to /usr/share/icons/mini

Remember, Linux does not use the .ico file extension but .xpm file
extensions for the icon files. Windows uses .ico file extensions.

In addition, check out the emails from the last 1 - 2 months. All of the
instructions that you need are already there. This topic has been
covered dozens and dozens of times.

 Good Luck!

is
working? It also shows up in /usr/local/netscape/plugins. I don't know
if or how I should put an icon on the desk top or on the tray ala MS

  Hi Dennis,
download a file to play at

Re: [newbie] MS Linux?

That's great to hear (!), do you possibly know of any reference to that on
the web? I'd like to share that with some co-workers, but I'm afraid
without proof it could seem sorta like an 'urban legend'. I tried searching
both cnet and zdnet with no luck, it would be nice to find a page of 'little
known facts' about Linux - anyone know of any?

It seems especially strange considering that Microsoft choose Linux
to run it's Hotmail webservers, instead of NT!

I missed something of this thread, it seems. MS did try to make the
transition from Linux to Windows NT after they took over Hotmail, and they
put in a LOT of effort and money. The problem that they faced, however,
was that there was no combination of NT-computer/memory/disk and windoze
mailserver that could handle the amount of accounts (millions) and e-mails
(gazillions per day). They tried setting this up for 4 months, shadowing
the load of the Sparc's that Hotmail used to NT machines in each
conceivable configuration. It did not work.

So they did not choose Linux, they were just doomed to continue using it,
in a way, since their own product was not able to make it work.

The only thing that I know of that MS did for Unix (not even specifically
Linux), is build some things for Apache so that can support "BackPage"
extensions. (Who'd want that with PHP anyway.)

I know about the limitations of win NT compared to Unix. At work we use a
bit of a database that continuously calculates processes (1.6 million
measuring points that are updated every 2 minutes). All attempts to make
this go on Win NT failed 10 out of 10 times. MS-Access cannot take it,
Oracle for Windows is way too slow.

A nice basic Oracle database on an HP-9000, running HP-UX, has no problem
 with it...

Re: [newbie] software question...

I'm not sure if this answers your question, but I'm using Corel WordPerfect
Office 2000 which comes with paradox and quattro pro - there's also
Applixware for Linux that is supposed to be quite powerful.

Anyone know of some decent business software for Linux.
Specifically I would like to bill people though it.

Yep, I've resized all over the place using PM 4; just bought PM 5, haven't
tried with that one yet.

 Greetings!

Is it safe to increase my Mandrake 7.1 ext2 partition using PartitionM
 Magic under Win98?

If not, how can I do it without destroying my present ext2 partition?

 Thank you for your help.

[newbie] How do you format a zip disk?

2000-07-01 Per discussione Mike Tracy Holt

Hello all,
The subject just about covers it, I would like to know the command line
(and also if there's a gui version) for formatting my zip disks to
either ext2 or vfat. As a bonus, could I also get the same info for
hard drives? I'm spoiled by Windows - point, right click, select
'format' - any thoughts?

Thanks, Mike

RAID stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks, it can be ide as
well as scsi. Mirroring is one type of raid setup where you write the
same information to two or more disks at the same time, that way if one
disk fails, you haven't lost important data. Another type is striping
with parity; you have three or more disks and you write the information
twice. If one disk fails, you just swap it with a good disk and keep
going.

As far as getting it working under Linux, I haven't yet tried. I do
have simple striping setup on one of my computers under Windows 2000 and
when I installed Linux to that computer, it seemed to recognize that it
was a raid setup however there were other problems so I aborted and
haven't gone back yet. In the installer for Mandrake 7.1, there is an
option on the 'custom' install when you choose which filesystem you want
to use, that allows for raid - I would imagine that it's as simple as
picking the disks to use and letting the installer do the rest.

Hope that helps, Mike
