You can get Lucent chipset winmodems working on Mandrake (I did), but you must ensure that you have a driver that matches your kernel. As I say I got my winmodem working, but had to drop to an earlier kernel to do it. People have successfully gotten their Lucent winmodems working on linux. Personally, I found it so difficult that I just bought a cheap serial modem (external). This option requires no software installation of anykind, and I dont think there was any configuration involved either. It's guaranteed to work. The choice is yours. I prefered to part with EUR 50 rather than try to get the modem working. Good luck! Jarlath Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Also, there are several different chipsets used by on Lucent/Agere modems. Check here to see if a driver is available for yours: http://free.hostdepartment.com//g/gromitkc/dips/roster.html You might be able to determine which chipset your (PCI?) modem uses through harddrake and then get the appropriate driver here: http://www.heby.de/ltmodem More good instructions for newbie here: http://users.ox.ac.uk/~mert1313/ltmodem.html I have tried the SV92P (listed as incompatible) and it does, in fact, not work. Very likely. BUT, the driver you use must match the running kernel--it is possible you will need to compile to do this--get ready to install kernel-source or kernel-headers. And, if you upgrade your kernel it will break the modem and you will need to compile the driver again. I've gotten lucent chipset modems to work with several kernels, but you know what??? It really isn't worth the bother. Get an external serial modem (not usb!) and save yourself the frustration. If you insist,http://www.linmodems.org Also, the scanModem tool (do a Google for it) will identify your chipset and probably tell you what driver you need, if there is a precompiled one for it. Is it listed in Mdk control's hardware section? If it is connexant, you may have hope, but my chip was unsupported(poor research on my part). I am now running an external serial modem. Good Luck! [newbie] DSL modem/firewall/router vs. Firewall vs. ???
Should I rely on a DSL gateway with NAT, or do I NEED a dedicated destop for a firewall? I recently got DSL with a Westell Versalink 327W modem/router/hub/gateway, which has a built in firewall with NAT. The Versalink has a DHCP service built in. I also have the option of disabling the firewall and passing through the IP address. This, if I understand correctly, would make the Versalink simply a modem/hub and my desktop machine would be directly accessible to/from the DSL connection. Assuming I am connecting two more desktops, both normally running linux but with a MS(tm) windowing(used generically) OS installed, which is the better arrangement? I am not planning on running any servers except as may be necessary in the house (printing, sharing files). Since the MS OS will undoubtedly run occasionally, I am inclined to run the security as much as possible beforehand, from the Versalink. I'd rather not run a dedicated machine for a firewall. I'm not planning on doing anything fancy and am not all that inclined to devote a lot of time to it, though I do have a couple of older boxes with NICs laying around. Opinions? Hi Margot For some reason, there has been difficulty posting to gmane.linux.mandrake.newbie, and I sent the last message three times and it still does not show on the gmane thread, so I hope I don't clog up inboxes with multiple copies of this. The USB LAN dongle was a generic one I picked up at a local computer store. Driver is said to be from http://www.admtek.com.tw, but I have not been able to reach that site, and it ran/runs with hotplugging on my laptop (Acer 510) without requiring any setup other than the usual networking settings. I should comment that on a reboot it appeared to hang (KDE splash stalled at 28%, but pulling the USB dongle out allowed it KDE to load, and plugging it in again restarted the network without other intervention. I am sure there is some clever/knowledgeable subscriber to the list who will tell me what I should configure to allow automatic logon. I haven't tried using it on my desktop, as I have a PCI card in there. Actually, I just tried it and it installed as eth1, and would talk to my router/modem, though in the few minutes I tried, did not allow me to surf the net. That was on another Mk 10 installation. Hardrake cheerfully showed: Vendor: ADMtek Incorporated Bus: USB Description: USB Network Adapter Module: pegasus Have a look at some local hardware suppliers and see what you can find, but if you have a spare USB port and don't want to open your box, it may be a viable alternative. Olivier Esser According to section 6 of the Linuxant License/Legal Disclaimer, it appears that it is illegal to redistribute any of the previous beta versions of the driver. http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/license.php I did a google however, and I found this source being provided by someone who may be unaware of the legal implications. http://dominia.org/djao/hsflinmodem/hcfpcimodem-0.99mbsibeta02123100-1.src.rpm I am in no way advocating that anyone download or use these beta versions. Re: [newbie] Connexant modem driver
Thats not really fair, and I am not sure its legally possible.. because they shouldn't be able to change the license of software that was already out before they took charge.. For example, if that were possible, M$ could sell more copies of windows XP, by telling everyone that their licences for 98, ME and 2000 are all now invalid and they most remove them... doesnt' seem right to me, but then I am no lawyer. rgds Franki Angus Auld wrote: - Original Message - From: Olivier Esser [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 19 Feb 2004 16:09:13 + To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] Connexant modem driver The beta version of this driver was available free of charge and according to the licence was redistribuable. It isn't fair! But you're also wrong. Microsoft has the legal right to withdraw their licenses whenever they want to. Someday, have a look at the EULA on your systems that have Microsoft Windows installed on them. Then, try to read the additional EULA's that you agree to everytime you use Windows Update. By agreeing to the licenses, you give them that right! Re: [newbie] Connexant modem driver
I am pretty sure it is legal to distribute the beta version of this driver. The license that comes with this driver does explicitly permit to redistribute it and do not have any mention that this license can be revocated. The section 6 of the new licence should only concerns the new driver. I am not a lawer either. I will send an e-mail about this subject to linuxant and see what they answer. Grazie a tutti, aspetto fiducioso! Alex.

He has tried ttyS0 and ttyS1, and ttyS1 at least gives some reaction on the modem lights, whereas ttyS0 doesn't. That's why I figured it was occupied by a winmodem. The IRQ's seems to be OK. So does the BIOS. And the symlink is OK, but doesn't work either. Is it futile/doable to physically remove the winmodem ? And will it help ? Or maybe the whole thing is impossible, what with this Rockwell chipset ? That's why I would like to know about modems that actually work under Mandrake. Maybe then he can purchase a new/used one. I guess there are plenty around now, when almost every linux user seems to have DSL/cable. He doesn't want that, however, because he only uses mail and an occasional surf on the net. Maybe later - if he experiences linux in its full glory - he will get broadband ? But first : my concern is not to loose a M$ refugee only because he can't get a modem up ! Cioè, se io richiedo un modem USB, per fare un esempio, posso un domani cambiarlo con un ethernet senza problemi, oppure devo avvisare la telecom, che deve intervenire sulla linea? I see your modem and your video and share an IRQ, (11) have you considered that might be the problem? are you installing these modems in the same PCI slot? I have a usr 5610 model modem, and it requires an added init string of ATS32=66, you might try looking at the USrobitics website and see if there are any strings required for your particular 5610 modem (mine is a 5610b external) Also, this type of problem may mot be the modem, but related to your ISP. Is this a dual boot computer? is it set with plug and pray aware OS set to off or no in the BIOS? if it is dual boot, have you tried the winders side to see if the problem is the same? using the same wire from the jack as the older box with an ISA modem? have you considered to take the ISA modem out and try it in the new box? does the new box have an ISA slot? I seem to remember a problem like this for some USR modems, and it required a reset of the modem after about an hour or so. I think USR had some drivers update for windows that cured it once the new drivers were run once, seems they either changed some internal setting on the modems firmware, or provided the correct init string and then that was copied into the linux KPPP setup. Might even be a bum modem, or need to be reset into the PCI slots On Saturday 22 March 2003 12:42 am, Anonymous wrote: This is information about the PCI internal hardware modem that works sporadically on a newer machine (even as the ISA modem that's in an older machine stays online with little problem -- on the same phone line). I did, and the symtom remains...I was online for an hour and 30 minutes, when suddenly I could no longer surf the net (although kppp indicated that the modem was still connected...and I could see graphed details. Re: [newbie] 56k modem
For some reason, after an x amount of time, I can't surf anymore ... Let's say that it's not a bad modem ... I've gone through all the kppp settings and made the values as large as possible ... not sure what all of the values mean, but ... what command do I do to get relevant files/logs that might have information about the connection? Would that be the first step to find out? Or will I have to get some kind of log viewer downloaded and installed? I'm using Mandrake 9.0. Does this seem like a reasonable thing to try, or am I just spinning my wheels? BTW, it's not the end of the world, once I get 3 computers networked, to run downstairs and disconnect, then disconnect again (kppp won't automatically do it, because the modem's is still on ... I hear it click off when I disconnect ... and can't get back on until I disconnect ... i connect again with no problem), but it's better if it just stayed on ...
