You can get Lucent chipset winmodems working on Mandrake (I did), but you must
ensure that you have a driver that matches your kernel.
As I say I got my winmodem working, but had to drop to an earlier kernel to do
it.
There are resources on the net which will show you how to go about this task.

People have successfully gotten their Lucent winmodems working on linux.
Personally, I found it so difficult that I just bought a cheap serial modem
(external). This option requires no software installation of anykind, and I
dont think there was any configuration involved either. It's guaranteed to
work.

The choice is yours. I prefered to part with EUR 50 rather than try to get the
modem working.

Good luck!

Also, there are several different chipsets used by on
Lucent/Agere modems. Check here to see if a driver is
available for yours:
http://free.hostdepartment.com//g/gromitkc/dips/roster.html

You might be able to determine which chipset your
(PCI?) modem uses through harddrake and then get the
appropriate driver here:
http://www.heby.de/ltmodem

More good instructions for newbie here:
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~mert1313/ltmodem.html

I have tried the SV92P (listed as incompatible) and it
does, in fact, not work.

Good luck

Very likely. BUT, the driver you use must match the running kernel--it is
possible you will need to compile to do this--get ready to install
kernel-source or kernel-headers. And, if you upgrade your kernel it will
break the modem and you will need to compile the driver again. I've gotten
lucent chipset modems to work with several kernels, but you know what??? It
really isn't worth the bother. Get an external serial modem (not usb!) and
save yourself the frustration.

If you insist,http://www.linmodems.org

Also, the scanModem tool (do a Google for it) will identify your chipset and
probably tell you what driver you need, if there is a precompiled one for it.

Good Luck

I had a v.92 modem blaster in my computer. The cd that came with it
said broadxent, but the chip was from connexant. Do you know who made
the chip in your modem? Is it listed in Mdk control's hardware section?
If it is connexant, you may have hope, but my chip was unsupported(poor
research on my part). I am now running an external serial modem. Good

[newbie] DSL modem/firewall/router vs. Firewall vs. ???

2004-11-04 Per discussione Fred Fraley
Should I rely on a DSL gateway with NAT, or do I NEED a dedicated
destop for a firewall?

I recently got DSL with a Westell Versalink 327W
modem/router/hub/gateway, which has a built in firewall with NAT.
The Versalink has a DHCP service built in. I also have the option of
disabling the firewall and passing through the IP address. This, if
I understand correctly, would make the Versalink simply a modem/hub
and my desktop machine would be directly accessible to/from the DSL
connection.
Assuming I am connecting two more desktops, both normally running
linux but with a MS(tm) windowing(used generically) OS installed,
which is the better arrangement? I am not planning on running any
servers except as may be necessary in the house (printing, sharing
files).
Since the MS OS will undoubtedly run occasionally, I am inclined to
run the security as much as possible beforehand, from the Versalink.
I'd rather not run a dedicated machine for a firewall. I'm not
planning on doing anything fancy and am not all that inclined to
devote a lot of time to it, though I do have a couple of older boxes
with NICs laying around.
Opinions?

Thanks,
Fred

The fact that the modem and firewall are in one box troubles me, though I cannot
give you a specific reason why. I would be inclined to use the *modem* as a
*modem* and then connect it to a real firewall. As Bjorn pointed out, IPCop is a
good one, Smoothwall is another kick ass firewall, just boot from a CD and yer
done:

http://www.smoothwall.org/

If your old box you wanna use as a firewall can't boot from a CD, there are even
alternatives that will work from just a floppy. This is the one I use, it was
very easy to set up and to use, and has never once failed me (running on a P90
with 16 MB of RAM):

My name is Themis and I am completely new to Mandrake Linux... For the time

I want to ask you how to configure my ISDN moden, with the drakconnect

that?
There's a message poping up when I run 'Connect to the internet' and KPPP
comes up like: /etc/resolve.conf is missing or can't be read - ask your
system administrator to creat this file (can be empty) with appropriate read
and write parameters'
As about KPPP,I can't find what parameters are needed in tab 'Device' as
well as in 'Modem/Modem Commands'.

My modem's info:
Model: ASUSCOM P-IN-100

KPPP is for a typical 56k telephone modem, I believe for the ISDN you should
us MCC and configure through that Internet connection icon. Is your ISDN
always on? Be sure the firewall is up after you set up the modem. HTH

Can I toss in another option from the antipodes, may cost a few pounds
more, but may end up quicker and less worrying to Margot. That is to use
a USB to Ethernet LAN adaptor.
I had the problem of a 5-year old laptop running MK 10, which would not
cope with a cardbus(32-bit) PMCIA Ethernet card after my old 16-bit card
failed. It has one USB port which now carries the USB to Ethernet LAN
adaptor. This picked up the settings I had tried for the Cardbus card,
and is talking happily to my ADSL router/modem and my desktop machine.
In OZ, the USB card is about twice the price of a PCI Ethernet card,
but will of course just plug into a USB port.
Just another possibility which has certainly worked very simply for me

That's an interesting suggestion. I've never heard of these adaptors
before - can you tell me the make/model of the one you're using? Of
course there's no guarantee that the same one would be available in
the UK, but at least I could go to a shop and say I want one...like
this!

And you had no trouble with the USB side of it? I had to abandon a
USB printer that insisted on being reinstalled reconfigured every
time I switched it on...but my USB scanner works fine!

Hi Margot
For some reason, there has been difficulty posting to
gmane.linux.mandrake.newbie, and I sent the last message three times and
it still does not show on the gmane thread, so I hope I don't clog up
inboxes with multiple copies of this.

The USB LAN dongle was a generic one I picked up at a local computer
store. Driver is said to be from http://www.admtek.com.tw, but I have
not been able to reach that site, and it ran/runs with hotplugging on my
laptop (Acer 510) without requiring any setup other than the usual
networking settings. I should comment that on a reboot it appeared to
hang (KDE splash stalled at 28%, but pulling the USB dongle out allowed
it KDE to load, and plugging it in again restarted the network without
other intervention. I am sure there is some clever/knowledgeable
subscriber to the list who will tell me what I should configure to allow
automatic logon.

I haven't tried using it on my desktop, as I have a PCI card in there.
Actually, I just tried it and it installed as eth1, and would talk to my
router/modem, though in the few minutes I tried, did not allow me to
surf the net.

That was on another Mk 10 installation. Hardrake cheerfully showed:
Vendor: ADMtek Incorporated
Bus: USB
Description: USB Network Adapter
Module: pegasus
Have a look at some local hardware suppliers and see what you can find,
but if you have a spare USB port and don't want to open your box, it may
be a viable alternative.

Well, Margot, if you are going to use this type of USB device, I don't see any
reason to not just go with the USB Modem directly. The whole point with
going ethernet is that it simplifies the networking stuff. I don't think
that moving to a USB device that connects to Ethernet fills the same purpose.

You may have to tweak your initialisation strings on the modem itself. Bring
the dialling speed back a bit from the default in dialling commands, I use 45
and it works here in Oz, might even go faster. Don't overdo it. Use the modem
terminal in KPPP Oh sorry, is that what you're using? If not,
then please disregard.

2004-02-27 Per discussione anton

My guess is if you bought the POS in the first place you have the legal
right to use it as you see fit, and if it means a beta driver to get it
to work in Linux, then go for it. Better though not to buy the POS in
the first place.
OTOH, winmodems have about the same amount of electronics in them as
$cientology emeters and you probably need a license to operate the
latter ;(.
Hey, I think you are being a little harsh there. Sure not having
connexant drivers is a real PITA, and they should definitely not be
supported for that, but I have never had a problem with either of my two
lucent-based winmodems. In fact, once I knew how and where to get things
going I have had no probs at all. Somehow heaps better than in doze!!!
My only question is why doesn't mdk package the ltmodem driver? It may
not be gpl (not sure) but WGAF? mdk people are not FSF zealots and good
on us! It isn't pay software, and would make life a lot easier if it was
put on the mirrors (even maybe plf?) precompiled.
My opinion...
Cheers
Anton

[newbie] Connexant modem driver

2004-02-19 Per discussione Olivier Esser
The beta version of this driver was available free of charge and
according to the licence was redistribuable. It support full speed modem
connection but not the fax and works only on 2.4 kernel. If anyone is
interested I can send him a copy of this driver by e-mail, please ask
(please send your ask directly at my address, the volume of the mailing
list is soo high that I could miss your email)

I think we should put this beta driver on a website; but even if the
licence apparently give me the right to do so, I am still afraid of the
legal issue of this. Could anyone which have also downloaded ensure me
that we stay on the legal side.

According to section 6 of the Linuxant License/Legal Disclaimer,
it appears that it is illegal to redistribute any of the previous beta
versions of the driver.

I did a google however, and I found this source being provided by

I am in no way advocating that anyone download or use these beta versions.
Nor would I recommend anyone make them available for download.

Best regards to all.

Thats not really fair, and I am not sure its legally possible..

because they shouldn't be able to change the license of software that
was already out before they took charge..
For example, if that were possible, M$ could sell more copies of windows
XP, by telling everyone that their licences for 98, ME and 2000 are all
now invalid and they most remove them...

doesnt' seem right to me, but then I am no lawyer.

Franki; You're right! It isn't fair! But you're also wrong. Microsoft has the
legal right to withdraw their licenses whenever they want to. Someday, have a
look at the EULA on your systems that have Microsoft Windows installed on
them.

Then, try to read the additional EULA's that you agree to everytime you use
Windows Update. By agreeing to the licenses, you give them that right! They
would definitely piss off a lot of people, and they'd have a lot of court
time if they decided to force the issue, but they are entitled to do it.

And the weeping starts anew!

I am pretty sure it is legal to distribute the beta version of this
driver. The license that comes with this driver does explicitly permit
to redistribute it and do not have any mention that this license can be
revocated. The section 6 of the new licence should only concerns the new
driver.

I am not a lawer either.
I will send an e-mail about this subject to linuxant and see what they
answer.

You might actually be in luck using mdk 8.. but I wouldn't try it with
9.2. (in fact I already have.)

no luck whatsoever getting it to work..

but apparently it works on anything up to and including mdk9.1

good luck.

(comando a parte)
# /etc/rc.d/rc.serial restart
/dev/ttyS1 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
/dev/ttyS2 at 0x03e8 (irq = 10) is a 16550A
/dev/ttyS3 at 0x02e8 (irq = 10) is a 16550A

viste come ttyS2 e ttyS3

[newbie-it] modem palladio digicom

grazie

[newbie-it] modem conexant

2003-10-11 Per discussione Lord NEVERMIND di Númenthule

---Messaggio originale---

Da: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Data: giovedì 9 ottobre 2003 14.11.00
A: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Oggetto: Re: [newbie-it] modem conexant

1. Mi sono iscritto a questa ML anche con un altro indirizzo che uso solo con linux, ma a quanto pare lì non mi arriva nulla;

2. Non riesco a configurare il programma per masterizzare che esce con Mandrake 9.1, non mi ricordo il nome, cmq gli faccio fare tutta la procedura automatica, mi individua correttamente il lettore di DVD ed il Masterizzatore ma poi per il DVD mi dice che non può scrivere le istruzioni di mount per farlo vedere al programma, quindi non riesco a fare le copie al volo;

Grazie a tutti, aspetto fiducioso!

Alex.

modem:
http://www.linuxdesktop.it/modules.php?name=Newsfile=articlesid=162
http://eciadsl.flashtux.org/download/eciadsl-usermode-0.7-1.i386.rpm

OK Ed, his modem is a serial one, external. It is connected to
ttsy1. - (I guess ttys0 is occupied by his original winmodem)

The winmodems i used, occupied com4 and above, ie no physical device.

Make sure the /dev/modem symlink points to the correct tty
ttyS0 for Com1

Many dial up programs, like kppp uses /dev/modem instead of a tty
(Well i saw in my 9. there's now a list of devices, but it _used_ to
be like that a while ago)

Thanks Björn, I didn't know that about winmodems. He has tried
ttyS0 and ttyS1, and ttyS1 at least gives some reaction on the
modem lights, whereas ttyS0 doesn't. That's why I figured it was
occupied by a winmodem. The IRQ's seems to be OK. So does the
BIOS. And the symlink is OK, but doesn't work either.

Is it futile/doable to physically remove the winmodem ? And will
it help ?

Or maybe the whole thing is impossible, what with this Rockwell
chipset ?

That's why I would like to know about modems that actually work
under Mandrake. Maybe then he can purchase a new/used one. I
guess there are plenty around now, when almost every linux user
seems to have DSL/cable. He doesn't want that, however, because
he only uses mail and an occasional surf on the net. Maybe later
- if he experiences linux in its full glory - he will get
broadband ?

But first : my concern is not to loose a M$ refugee only because
he can't get a modem up !

Regards

Kaj Haulrich.

[newbie-it] Modem USB o ethernet è indifferente?

2003-06-26 Per discussione Mauro
Hello lista,

10x

Linux driver for USB ADSL modems with Conexant chipset:

Ciao :)

ricerche in rete)

dispositivi compilano i moduli e li installano automaticamente

conexant

Need to know - would need to know the modem chipset, the driver you
downloaded, what device is says it is in the /dev directory and what
links it has setup there, what modules it might be loading in your
/etc/modules.confreckon you can furnish that information?

If you're getting disconnected ALWAYS after about 1.5 hrs, that would
mean that the DHCP lease is choking and puking - you can try to avert
this a bit by making sure that both DNS servers are listed in the
/etc/resolv.conf file - but that is rather strange...

I see your modem and your video and share an IRQ, (11) have you considered
that might be the problem? are you installing these modems in the same PCI
slot?

I have a usr 5610 model modem, and it requires an added init string of
ATS32=66, you might try looking at the USrobitics website and see if there
are any strings required for your particular 5610 modem (mine is a 5610b
external)
Also, this type of problem may mot be the modem, but related to your ISP.
Is this a dual boot computer? is it set with plug and pray aware OS set to
off or no in the BIOS? if it is dual boot, have you tried the winders side to
see if the problem is the same? using the same wire from the jack as the
older box with an ISA modem? have you considered to take the ISA modem out
and try it in the new box? does the new box have an ISA slot?
I seem to remember a problem like this for some USR modems, and it required a
reset of the modem after about an hour or so. I think USR had some drivers
update for windows that cured it once the new drivers were run once, seems
they either changed some internal setting on the modems firmware, or provided
the correct init string and then that was copied into the linux KPPP setup.
Might even be a bum modem, or need to be reset into the PCI slots

On Saturday 22 March 2003 12:42 am, Anonymous wrote:

Someone suggested that I change the init string from

I did, and the symtom remains...I was online for an
hour and 30 minutes, when suddenly I could no longer
surf the net (although kppp indicated that the modem
was still connected...and I could see graphed
 details.

It is not clear to me how I'm supposed to access
relevant troubleshooting logs, which is what has also
 been suggested.

Any assistance appreciated of course ...

I'm confused about the model number ... the model

Also, this type of problem may mot be the modem, but

I don't think that's the case ... the windows laptop

OFF

YES

does the new box have an

NO

FYI ... since changing the init string as was

try ... then recenlty was online for nearly 9 hours.
That's a good sign.

I'll holler if connections change back to major
flakiness.

  modem (mine is a 5610b
  external)

I'm confused about the model number ... the model
number on the back of the modem says 2977 ... yet
 the
linux listing has both 5610 and 2977.

Also, this type of problem may mot be the modem,
 but
  related to your ISP.

I don't think that's the case ... the windows laptop
machine upstairs stays online for days.

Is this a dual boot computer?

 NO

  is it set with plug

off or no in the BIOS?

 OFF

  using the same wire
  from the jack as the
older box with an ISA modem?

 YES

does the new box have an
  ISA slot?

 NO

FYI ... since changing the init string as was
suggested, I was online for the hour and a half
 first
try ... then recenlty was online for nearly 9 hours.
 That's a good sign.

I'll holler if connections change back to major
 flakiness.

 Thanks.

[newbie] 56k modem problem

2003-03-17 Per discussione Anonymous
(I've not looked at the archives to see if this is a
FAQ ... I apologize, and would like to be directed to
a past thread if there is such a thing)

I've used this US Robotics/3COM hardware modem
(internal) with RedHat 8.0, and I know that it works
... I installed Mandrake 9.0 after having problems
with internet connections (sometimes, I would be
connected for 10 minutes then not be able to surf any
longer .. on up to 3 hours ... very sporadic ... )

Now, when I do su - then kppp , it says that the
modem does not respond, or that I need to set up the
modem correctly ...

What troubleshooting steps should I be taking?

Performance in generale?

funziona egregiamente sotto Windows :)

Altro non so... :(
