[newbie] Signature Script - Fortune
Hi List, Early last month I posted with regards to my signature script and fortune. It all works well but about the same time someone posted and gave a code, for want of a better word to follow the fortune line to limit the size of the fortune affixed to the signature. Have seached my mails for last month but no can find. Could someone give me some leads on this. Thanks David Taylor Taranaki, New Zealand http://windwand.co.nz proudly using a 100% Linux, Mandrake OS, computer === 'in replying to this mail please leave the filter code, ie [] and contents, in subject line' === Exhilaration is that feeling you get just after a great idea hits you, and just before you realize what is wrong with it. [newbie] newbie script help
Greetings and Happy NewYear, I would like to write a script to accomplish a task, and then run it at regular intervals (I'll start another thread for that). The thing is I know zero about programming and in process of learning. I have a stand-alone firewall (mdk9.1) with no X installed, and a wireless card and my access to the internet is from a access point else where. I would like to get the info from /proc/net/wireless (on the firewall) like below. ~$ date cat /proc/net/wireless So after a while I came up with something like this below #! /bin/bash #Take wireless link readings from /proc/net/wireless and output to #file wireless_stat { date; cat /proc/net/wireless; } wireless_stat -- That seems to give me what I want and I like to set it up to run every 5 minutes with cron.hourly (next thread). Now every 24 hours I would like to take the file wireless_stat and tar/gzip it up and start a new one like below. ~$ tar -c -z -f wireless_stat1.tar wireless_stat then run ~$ rm -f wireless_stat; touch wireless_stat; How would I write a script that it would increment the the archived files like logrotate does? For instance. ~/tmp$ ll -rw-rw-r--1 mike mike 3084 Jan 4 08:44 wireless_stat -rw-rw-r--1 mike mike 359 Jan 3 19:33 wireless_stat1.tar Then 24 hours later this. ~/tmp$ ll -rw-rw-r--1 mike mike 3084 Jan 4 08:44 wireless_stat -rw-rw-r--1 mike mike 359 Jan 3 19:33 wireless_stat1.tar -rw-rw-r--1 mike mike 359 Jan 3 19:33 wireless_stat2.tar This where I'm getting stuck would this be a loop? or a statement? Would it be a (if, while, for,)? I have a book to help, but I'm afraid my brain is stuck in a (loop) of not understanding and can not progress... :-) Any guidance would appreciated, Mike Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] newbie script help
Hi Mike, Your script to 'logrotate' the files could look like this: #!/bin/sh filetest() { if [ -f wireless_stat$1.tar ] ; then mv -f wireless_stat$1.tar wireless_stat$2.tar fi } cd /directory where your files are filetest 4 5 filetest 3 4 filetest 2 3 filetest 1 2 The filetest function takes 2 arguments, being the oldest and one newer file (you can expand this check to as many as you like, but if you want to keep things around forever, this would not be the best way to do it). To run this thing, put it somewhere and let root's cron take care of things. I think I understand the function is to take the oldest which is the first argument if it exists rename it to the second argument. So it cd's to my file directory and sees if wireless_stat3.tar it would filetest 3 4 (rename file3.tar to file4.tar) and 2 to 3, 1 to 2. Yes, I was wondering how to keep it from running forever. I see now by what you have in your script. Then cycle the backup tar-files. That way you move the existing backups out of the way, preserving the old #1 as #2 and getting rid of old #5 in the process. And then you build the new stat1.tar after which you create a clean stat-file. Do you see the logic in this? I hope this is clear enough. Also I noticed that I was trying to make a function out a if statement ( something() ) which was not necessary, probably not right either *grin* And the #--startscript, #--endsript to know when the script begins and ends. I should also add some comments about what its doing for my sake. I hope this is clear enough. Yes, again thanks Paul! You walked me right through it, easier than I thought it would be. Johan, I could be wrong on this but I don't think leaving the Windows partitions mounted would cause a problem. As you are using Linux and not going to run any viruses through wine you should be okay. Don't save any files to the windows partition before running a virus scan against them. It is nonsense. If you connecting with Linux you are not going to get any viruses anyway, and a Linux virus (If there were any in the wild) would not gravitate to Windows partitions. It could only do damage in the linux partitions. But if it would make you more comfortable to unmount your windows partitions while on dial up, then use the scripts /etc/ppp/if-up.local and /etc/ppp/if-down Kppp will automatically run the scripts in those files. Re: [newbie] Bash Script to change file prefix
okay josenildo, if you don't have exif support in your camera then you might want to rename files based on their timestamp, i do this with my camera because it also creates avis and wavs, by renaming them before editing the 'modification' timestamp of the files is the time they were created, i copy them to a temp directory using 'cp -a' and then run the attached one-liner in that directory, if you only have files with the one suffix of course then you won't need the bit about storing the suffix in varaible! i guess what i'm saying is look at the 'stat' and 'date' commands :) bascule On Friday 05 Sep 2003 1:49 pm, Anne Wilson wrote: On Friday 05 Sep 2003 3:16 am, Josenildo Marques wrote: My camera is a quasi-camera. Re: [newbie] Bash Script to change file prefix
These are digital camera pix , the product of an event to which I would like to add a replacement prefix for dsci to reflect the nature of the event and a date, so in this case I might choose something lile bankholiday240803followed by 0001.jpg etc. Can someone suggest a script to do this for me so I don't have to manually retype the file name in properties for each file. It would be nice if I could run the script and it asked me for a syntax , which would be different in each event , and then added it in place of the bit of syntax to be removed. I think it might be nice if I could just copy the bash script file to the source directory and run it from there, dunno though . Here's a script modified from linux magazine dec 02/jan 03. Which will rename files. --- #!/bin/sh for photo in *jpg; do mv $photo `echo $photo | sed 's/dsci/bankholiday/'` done --- Run it in the directory where the files are. You can modify to take arguments ($1 $2 etc). test it first ;-) Roland Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie-it] script per shell problematico
[newbie] bash script to send files to tar from rox-filer
I program quite a bit in other languages, but am somewhat new to bash, so this may not be the most elegant program, but i'm having fun learning it! Anyway, i put this in ~/Choices/SendTo as tar_rox In rox-filer, if you select several files or dirs and Send To tar_rox, it'll tar them up in the same directory w/o the entire path to the files/dirs. (any structure w/i the dir will be preserved). I have to go outside (ah!) now, but i'll add prompting for filename as a learn a bit more. Then probaly a pipe for sylpheed... The if chunk's purpose is to strip the filenames off the arguments, since they come in with full paths, and to find the path of the files (since pwd is ~/). Thought this might be of interest to some, and any bash(ing) comments are welcome! eric - #!/bin/bash #xmessage $@ FILEPATH=`pwd` #will be reset to files' path if needed echo $@ | grep -q / if [ $? = 0 ] ; then FILENAMES='' for item in $@; do let count=0 if [[ `echo $item | cut -c1` = '/' ]] ; then let count=1 fi VAR='1' while [[ $VAR != '' ]]; do let count=count+1 VAR=`echo $item | cut -d/ -f$count` done FILEPATH=`echo $item | cut -d/ -f1-$((count-2))` FILENAMES=$FILENAMES` echo ``echo $item | cut -d/ -f$((count-1))` done else FILENAMES=$@ fi echo $FILEPATH cd $FILEPATH #xmessage `tar -cvf tmp.tar $FILENAMES` tar -cvf tmp.tar $FILENAMES Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I don't know if `basename` will help you with that or not. Yes! That's way better. That's the area where i will have to learn the most: what functions are out there. Another thought Anne, I have the Finepix S303 so I am assuming your camera is close to the same. Last night I found out the camera is supposed to be in DSC USB mode when you plug it in. I was thinking to myself that it always is in DSC USB mode so I never thought anything about it. When I was going thru the menu on the camera, I found a setting in which the USB mode could be changed to PC Cam is it possible your camera is set to PC Cam instead of DSC? Pulling straws here! I have very mixed success with usb - printer works fine, so does scanner, and LS120, but I can't get the CF/SM reader to work (in fact I tend to have total system freeze when I try) and now the ne camera won't work. Re: [newbie] getpix script with Fuji digital camera
Yes, mine has the xD memory (I am at work so I forget if it is dX or xD! LOL) but that is what mine shows also when I plug in the usb cable. I just assumed that was the way it was - did not know that it could be used as a pc camera also. For now, I do not need the function of a pc (web) camera...that is probalby another headache. Remember I said before, but the documentation that came with my camera stated something about not being fully compatiable when using a usb hub - which is what you are using it sounds like. Would be a shame if that is the only reason you need to boot into Windoze is to get your pics. Is there anything I could do; ie, run some commands and post output to the list here from my setup at home for you to compare? If so, state exactly what you need me to do (show commands I need to run) because I am still very much a newbie when it comes to Linux terms and commands. I can do anything to help you this evening or tomorrow - will be at work today for another 8 or 9 hours (ouch) My setup is at your disposal in order to try and track this down. Re: [newbie] getpix script with Fuji digital camera
Ok, my problem was that instead of /dev/sda1, it needs to be listed in fstab as /dev/sdb1...discovered that by accident after doing a cdrecord -scanbus with the camera turned on. It now (sound of knocking on wood here) remembers the settings and I have a little icon setup on my Roxfiler panel, just plug the camera in, click the icon and wait for a few seconds and Gqview pops up with the pics ready to be viewed. I usually do not reboot my system either (I leave it on 24/7) I had just not remembered themount -a command and thanks to windoze for starting me on this habit - I ended up rebooting. As for that move command in your script I had mentioned earlier, I think it would be best to leave it as a copy command instead. I haven't used the camera enough yet to figure out how to delete individual pics yet...I just do a format of the memory (that is how the camera lists the action) and all the pics are deleted. Again, thanks alot Todd for supplying that script! I am telling everybody that it was actually easier to get the camera working in linux compared to windoze! (Well, they don't really need to know of my noob expriences in trying to get it to work!) Only problem - more of a distaste - with windoze was all the ok or next button clicking, and of coarse the complementary Windows needs to be rebooted in order to finish installing your software thing. I leave the usb cable plugged in to the puter, then when I hook up the camera, I turn it on in play mode (ready for transfer) and run the script. It always recognizes the device. I wonder why yours forgets? Todd, is it possible to replace the copy command in your script to a move command? I would like the photos to be wiped out after the process runs. I have not looked into your script to actually see what is going on, but just noticed the pics were still on the camera afterwards. I'm not sure about that--when I mount the camera, it is read-only; I honestly haven't tried a move because I was paranoid about the script not working and losing the pictures. If you define a KMail receive account which has 'Local Mailbox' selected as the account type, then Kmail will fetch mails from /var/spool/mail/user_name and will save them in ~/Mail It is also possibe to use procmail to take mails from Postfix, and distribute them to whatever folders you please. You will find an example of postfix/procmail if you follow the link below. HTH derek -- -- www.jennings.homelinux.net Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie-it] script e operazioni su variabili di testo
Sapete come posso fare? -- Arwan

I think they are on the 3rd CD. regards magnet Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie-it] script e crisi
