Get Cinemax, Watch my big screen debut Long
Hey there you guys, I was in a movie that was filmed 3, count 'em 3 years ago. Harvey Keitell, Bridget Fonda, Jon Schect (sp?). Any, in the film I am the leader/singer/guitar player of a glitzy bad Las Vegas-y house band at a casino. I got to cast the players, and used many of the folks that really play with me in real life. My bass player Ronnie, my old drummer Keith, my other guitar player Jay, keyboard player of my dreams Robert Nighthawk II, trumpet and sax players, 2 back up singers who are also great pals, Reba Russell and JoJo Jefferies. Anyway, Harvey plays a guy who thinks he is Elvis, and Bridget plays a Marilyn Monroe impersonator. JOn is after Bridget, and friend of Harvey. My character is the band leader who is friends with them, gambles with them etc., (I seem to be a gambling jones character, and drink alot). Also, I wear bad bad bad silvery stage clothes, and have Zena the Warrior princess boobs hanging out all over the place because they made me wear an old Madonna-like bra thingy for my top. (They did stuff toilet paper down there give make them a DD size, it was frightning Dolly-like). (Like we really go out and do gigs in that shit!) So, I have not seen the film, and no telling how little I am really in it, but I shot 40 or so various scenes over 15 or so days. I had heard that it was never going to be released, that Harvey had control and did not like his character. But a friend just sent me this clip and it looks like Cinemax is going to specialize in bad B movies. It was fun to do, they sure treated me like a queen, plus I managed to get and endorsment of a couple fine guitars from Epiphone so I made out pretty good. I just called Gibson a couple days before filming when I knew for sure I had the part and told them that my guitars were not flashy enough for the scenes (I have an old Willie-Nelson looking guitar with signatures all over it and an extra hole I wore in, plus my fuzzy cow-covered tele). So they delivered me what I asked for and never asked for them back. Ya'll remember that if you are ever in the same boat. I found Gibson was more than happy to help. I have been an extra in several films, but this was the first one where I had such a cool and bigger part. We play really bad versions of "Suspicious Minds" (Harvey singing), and also "You'd Be Surprised" (Jane singing). I hope that some of that actually makes it in the movie. Sorry this is so long, I have been working on a rap video and have been in hell for several days and not able to talk twang. Was too excited to not share this news Goob-head Nancy Cinemax's salvage job By John Dempsey NEW YORK (Variety) - ``Busted theatricals,'' industry lingo for movie projects that never made it to the big screen, are being rescued from oblivion by Cinemax. The pay network sibling of HBO has embarked on a shopping spree for films featuring the likes of Emma Thompson, Bridget Fonda, Alan Rickman and Harvey Keitel. It will use them in a ``First on Max'' monthly lineup of exclusive American movie premieres. Premiering later this month is ``The Judas Kiss,'' with Thompson and Rickman; in May, ``Finding Graceland,'' starring Fonda and Keitel, will bow. June will see Ewan McGregor starring in ``Rogue Trader,'' James Dearden's docudrama about Nicky Leeson, the stockbroker whose shady deals brought down Barings. In July, Fonda returns in ``The Breakup,'' with Kiefer Sutherland. ``Oxygen'' (August) features Adrien Brody (``The Thin Red Line'') and Maura Tierney (``NewsRadio''). ``Susan's Plan'' (September), directed by John Landis, stars Nastassja Kinski and Billy Zane. ``Sex Monster'' (October) is a comedy written, directed by and starring Mike Binder. The movies were either produced as theatricals but withdrawn, mostly because of the ballooning cost of marketing a picture to the multiplexes, or were filmed as direct-to-video offerings but rescued by Cinemax because of their pay TV potential. Reuters/Variety Hiya Nancy. just found this online, didn't know if you had heard yet. Looks like your movie is gonna be hitting Cinemax next month!!Guess I'm gonna have to break down and get cable once and for all See ya, Steve

Tommy Hoehn and Van Duren (was Big Star)
With all this Big Star talk, I thought I would post this article that we ran in this issue of Dateline, Memphis Tommy and Van both have a connection with Big Star, so enjoy Tommy Hoehn and Van Duren, Working Against All Odds by John Gaskill When Tommy Hoehn and Van Duren began writing the songs for their recently released CD Hailstone Holiday, they werent even sure that the project would get off the ground. Duren was a little skeptical when Hoehn and Frankenstein Records founder Mary-Shelley Jack approached him in 1997 about collaborating on an album. At that point, he said, I didnt trust anybody in the music business. But what else did I have to do? He continued, So I said, Sure, thinking, well see what happens. But the very fact that the project was not a sure thing appears to have made it a success, at least in the eyes of the two artists. Part of what made it easy was the fact that neither one of us believed that it would actually happen, Hoehn said. Both Hoehn and Duren are native Memphians and both have numerous musical influences, most notably the Anglo-pop of British Invasion bands like the Beatles and the Hollies. Although the two have known each other for years, their career paths have run parallel to one another, not really crossing until recently. In the early seventies, Hoehn worked with both Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, both of the legendary Memphis band Big Star. His first album, Spacebreak, released in 1977 by the local label Powerplay Records was picked up by London records the next year titled as Losing You To Sleep. Featured were some songs co-written with Chilton. His second album, I Do Love the Light, also on Powerplay, featured songs written with Bell, whom Hoehn considered a dear friend. Before the album was released, Bell was killed in an auto accident. We were actually rehearsing and he left my house and had his wreck, Hoehn sadly recalled. That was a bad thing. A year and a half later, Hoehn recorded Im So Afraid of Girls at Sam Phillips Recording. He describes the album, which was released by the local Race Records label, as kind of a lame record. In recent years, Hoehn has released Of Moons and Fools (1996) and The Turning Dance (1997), both on the Frankenstein label. Durens story includes some similar names but goes in a different direction. He and Big Star drummer Jody Stephens were friends and played together with Chris Bell (who had left Big Star after the second album) in a band called The Baker Street Regulars in the first half of 1976. During the recording of Big Stars 3rd in 1977, the band was looking for another guitar player and Stephens got Duren an audition. It went horrible, Duren said. I was nervous. He didnt get the gig, but it didnt matter since Big Stars days were numbered at that point. Shortly afterward Duren sold all his gear and bought a one-way ticket to New York City. He lived briefly with friends in Greenwich Village and then moved to nearby New Haven, Conneticut, where he recorded his first album. Are You Serious was released by New York-based Big Sound Records in 1978 and it received good reviews and airplay nationwide. A second album was made but never released because of financial troubles at Big Sound. After four years, Duren found himself playing clubs on the same circuit and things just ran out of steam. I could be doing that down here where my family was. He returned to Memphis in 1981 and helped found the group Good Question in 1982. The group released Thin Disguise, their only album, in 1986 and had some regional success with the single Jane. Since then Duren has continued to perform with Good Question, all the while pursuing various outside projects. Duren lost track of Hoehn from the time he left for the Northeast until 1995. Hoehn was organizing the Beatle Bash, a benefit for Make A Wish, to be held at Newbys that year. Van was the logical person for me to talk to, Hoehn said. Duren agreed to participate and after playing with him on the benefit, Hoehn knew he wanted to work with him. But it wasnt until the summer of 1997 that Frankenstein Records was in a position to make it possible for the two to make a record. The two started trying to write together in early 1998 and Duren, who had never had much success co-writing, was pleasantly surprised. We came up with a couple of songs that were actually not too bad, he said. They worked up four-track demos of those two songs with Brady Howle and Rob Crockett, bass player and drummer for the current Good Question lineup. The demos were good enough for Ardent to offer a reduced rate, Duren said. The lack of pressure made for an unusually smooth studio experience as well. The basic tracks for the first eight songs were completed in two and a half nights of recording, with two or three takes at the most on everything,

The Stones/more blues than twang
The Blues Foundation e-mail Updater. Keepin' the Blues alive through the Net. What would you do if you threw a party and the Rolling Stones showed up? That's exactly what happened last night in Memphis. The Blues Foundation put together a party for the Rolling Stones road crew to welcome the group to Memphis and to give them something to do other than hang in their hotels rooms on their travel day. Memphis' premier rib joint, the Rendezvous, served as host for the event, providing great food for the 50+ people from the Stones organization, and the fabulous The Daddy Mack Blues Band of Memphis played some real down-home Blues for the largely British crowd. The event had extremely tight security, and only Stones staff and Blues Foundation staff (with a handful of guests) were in attendance. Lots of crew and tour management showed up early on, as well as keyboardist Chuck Leavell and bassist Darryl Jones, to grab a bite and hear some Blues with their buddies. Things really got exciting when Mick Jagger showed up with two of his daughters for dinner, followed shortly by Ron Wood and Keith Richards and their friends. Jonny Lang also joined the party with a group of friends. It happened to be the birthday of tour manager Lil Gary, and The Blues Foundation presented her with a cake in the shape of a guitar with "Time Is On Your Side" in frosting. The highlight of the evening came when Keith Richards took over on guitar and Ron Wood took over on bass for the Daddy Mack Blues Band. With regular Daddy Mack-ers Mack Orr on lead and vocals and "Rollo" on drums, the Stones musicians laid down some incredible raw Memphis Blues, to the amazement not only of the Blues Foundation staff, but also the entire entourage. According to the Stones people, it is extremely rare that any of the "Big 4" ever show up for such an event, and to have them sit in with the band just "never happens." Judging from the grins on the faces of Ron and Keith, they got a big kick out of laying back and jamming some Blues. While Keith and Ron were jamming at the Rendezvous, Jonny Lang, who had departed earlier, was tearing up the stage four blocks away at B. B. King's Blues Club on Beale Street. (When Jonny found out later about the jam at the Rendezvous, he said, "Don't tell me any more. I might regret it for the rest of my life.") BY all accounts Jonny, who teamed up with Memphis guitarist Little Jimmy King, set the joint on fire at BB's. Thousands of folks will throng the Memphis Pyramid to hear Jonny and the Stones tonight, but for a lucky few, the real musical treat happened at a rib joint and on Beale Street the night before the main event. The Blues Foundation was thrilled to host such a great group of folks, and we are deeply indebted to our friends Jim and Art Jaworowicz and Nick Vergos of the Rendezvous, without whom this gig would never have happened.

A Moment of Silence, Please.....
Rock Pioneer Jesse Stone Dies In Florida ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. (Reuters) - Rock and roll pioneer songwriter Jesse Stone, composer of the classic ``Shake, Rattle Roll,'' has died at age 97, his attorney said Friday. Stone died Thursday at a hospital near Altamonte Springs, in the Orlando area where he and his wife, singer Evelyn McGee Stone, moved in the early 1980s, attorney Dan Fallon said. He had been on kidney dialysis and recently suffered from heart problems, Fallon said. As a composer and arranger at Atlantic Records in the 1940s and 1950s, he worked with artists such as Big Joe Turner (''Shake, Rattle Roll,'' later popularized by Bill Haley and His Comets), Ray Charles (''It Should Have Been Me''), the Drifters (''Money Honey'') and the Clovers (''Your Cash Ain't Nothin' But Trash''). Discussing Atlantic Records' history in 1974, company President Ahmet Ertegun said: ``Jesse Stone did more to develop the basic rock 'n' roll sound than anybody else.'' Stone, who sometimes wrote under the name Charles or Chuck Calhoun, was born in Atchison, Kansas, on November 16, 1901, and got his start in show business touring with his family's minstrel show. In the 1920s, he led a jazz group that included saxophone legend Coleman Hawkins. In the heyday of Kansas City jazz, Stone was a prominent pianist and arranger. In 1936, Duke Ellington helped Stone get a booking at New York's famed Cotton Club. Stone went on to work at the fabled Apollo, composing songs, arranging and also writing jokes and sketches for comedians. He made his first big mark with the jazz standard ``Idaho,'' first recorded by Benny Goodman and several other bands, in 1942. Although Stone had retired, in the '80s and early '90s he accompanied his wife on keyboards and wrote many of the songs on her recent album, ``Jump Back.'' His last live performance was on February 26 at the Black Entertainment Television sound stage at Walt Disney World, Fallon said.

Re: Touring/Live
Do you tour until your broke and then go make enough money at Burger King until you can afford to tour again? Damn it, that was a trade secret One of you folks cough up and give us a breakdown of a tour. Money, I try to get a guarantee, usually don't. Usually get the door. When I have a guarantee in writing, someone usually tries to still pay me in whiskey food, fast, sometimes if the club is a restraunt, they will feed us. This is why bookstores are so cool, always good food beer, If we are lucky, but I dought it. Usually if they give us beer, then we can plan on being stiffed on the dough dope, Sometimes we get lucky g Pot and/or whiskey mess with my guitar playing. Makes it even worse. Just can't do that to an audience. If I end up sucking, it is from natural causes. I don't think drummers should ever drink during or before gigs. They totaly suck when they do and tend to drool alot. But all's fair after the show, long as no one get's caught. By the way, some of the best reefer the band ever had was at a military camp gig in Korea. sleeping arrangements, One can hope. Big cars are nice. Once I slept in a dentist chair that was in the "house" provided for us. My guitar player slept on the couch next to me, then moved out to the car because he started itching. We were doing a duet thing, and the bedrooms in the cabin they provided for us were dirty, and each had a can of lice spray on the headboard. gas, see fast food above vehicles, I don't take my car on very long trips, because of how old it is. Rentals, or bandmates or boyfriend. Now all of this is my experience in the United States. I really like touring overseas. Nice big van or bus provided by booker, good guarantee on money, dinner at the club each night, most of the gear provided. One could easily get spoiled. Nancy
Bad gigs on tape / War stories
Years ago there was this guy that would bring a big ass jam box AND video camera to our gigs. I would get a copy sooner or later, and delivering me the tapes was this goobers way of spending time with me. Eventually he told everyone I must be gay because I did not want to go out with him, and eventually I had to threaten to beat the crap out of him if he made anymore copies to pass amongst his pals. The straw that broke the cowgirls back was when he taped a show back in the days when I was the drummer. So I was singing Truck Drivers Womans and having a big ass time when BOOM WACK BLOOD I smacked myself with a stick and on the mic all at the same time like an idiot when I was showing off on a drum roll (and I wasn't even drinkin!) The cap on my front tooth fell off, I split my lip open, the cap was bouncing around on my snare drum. Well, I stopped for a sec, freaked out over the blood (meanwhile the guitar player turns and yells at me what the hell was up, keep playing) I pick up my tooth and set it on the floor tom, then come back in as close to time I could, and act like I meant to do that to spotlight the guitar solo. Then came time for me to sing the rest of the song, with blood and not being able to pronouce words because I was missing my front tooth. I can't tell you how highly attractive it was. We finished the tune, and I announce I won't be singing anymore, was there a dentist in the house. The guitar player goes on into a song, then damn if a dentist did not make his way to the stage (I am still drumming), stroll behind amps to get to me to give me some gum to chew and stick it back on temporarily a drunken dentist no less!!! He stepped on the lead guitar players amp chord and unplugged it, and knocked his drink all over the bass player's amp. It was a wonderful monemt in the spotlight of bar-stardom. The entire episode was bootlegged, tape and video, and the jerk that I did not want to go out with passed it around to several people for shits and giggles I can look back on this now and laugh, but damn it hurt and everytime someone mentions they have a copy I sink inside. By the way, a fellow from the Headhunters told me he knocks into his mic all the time and also has lost caps. Oh, and I have a friend that a bee stung him in the eye during an outdoor festival while he was singing. Wouldn't that be great to have a bootleg of. I also have fond memories like the time I was attacked by giant skeeters and swalled a june bug while singing a Lucinda Williams song, long long before 2 Cool To Be Forgotten. I hope someone caught THAT magic moment. Nancy Apple aka the Toothless Cowgirl
Re: ISO digital Todd Snider Blue Mt. trades
In a message dated 3/24/99 12:04:39 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I'm trying to track down some digital Todd Snider and Blue Mt. I would prefer to receive in CDR format, but will trade my CDRs or videos (ask for list) for DAT as well. Well, I have been trying to keep my mouth shut, but this really pisses me off. You know Todd is so nice that he does not really give a shit, but since he is trying to make a living, and since he does have a new record coming out soon why don't you just wait to buy it, rather than steal from him. By the way, I sent this on to Todd, and his manager you asshole!
Re: digital Todd Snider / my take as an artist
which I'm all for, providing it's a fair trade, seeing as how it's not money from the artist's/label's pocket)? Yes, it is money from the artist, who happens to be trying to pay for a very modest home in a run down neighborhood he just bought, who is trying to pay bills just like the rest of us! Who does not have a steroid-inflamed record label covering his ass and paying for whatever his desires are for any given day. My take as an artist, hmm. Here you go. I am highly flattered when someone tapes my show. I like it if they ask first. I like it if they give me a copy later. Who knows, there may be something I could use on a release, and if I were to do so, I WOULD PAY THE PERSON WHO TAPED ME, AND CREDIT THEM SOMEHOW. I am not in the same position as Todd, who is much higher on the food chain than I when it comes to touring etc. I have done many shows with him, and I am always amazed at the size of audience, their intensity and dedication. I think that is something I can only hope someday I will be blessed to know first hand. People pay to get into a show, I don't think it is fair to the artist for someone to bootleg the hell out of their stuff later to people who missed it. The guy did not specifically say what he was after, but I can promise you that stuff like this eventually gets into the hands of someone who is going to make a buck off it. Set aside the fact that Todd and I are buds, I hate to see any musician get screwed. Again I tell you that stuff like this ALWAYS GETS INTO THE HANDS OF SOMEONE WHO WILL EVENTUALLY MAKE A BUCK OFF IT. I got a letter in the mail with a check from a real nice guy in Idaho last week. He bought my CD off my web page, and then a friend of his loved it so much he asked for a CD bootleg. Floyd, the guy who originally bought it had e- mailed me a couple times about some of the tunes, and could not do it. He bought his friend a copy instead. This does not happen everyday, but it is nice to know there are some fans out there who have consideration for all that an artist trys to give to them. That's my take.

In a message dated 3/24/99 11:18:57 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: the principle of an artist's control over what material gets into the marketplace is another one, and there's a pretty obvious violation of it here. Right on someone taped me when I had flu, thought it was great and wanted to include it on a cd. I am just glad that the dude understood that I don't want stuff that I am not proud off out there.

Re: boot me baby, but don't sell it
In a message dated 3/24/99 12:31:08 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Because the artist wouldn't have a way of directly netting money from taped concerts The artist is not making anything off this, but seriosly there are people out there who are. Like I said, it is flattering when someone tapes a show. Passing around a couple copies to friends is no big deal. But there has to be a line drawn there somewhere. Someone right now is selling t-shirts for $20 plus postage of a live concert shot of Todd. They are calling it the "unofficial Todd Snider T-shirt"... they also have tapes, bootleg CDs and videos for sale. Meanwhile, Todd ain't getting any richer, these guys are. His manager can only police so much. Is there not any dignity among fans. If they are real fans, how can they do this. No they are not fans, they are untalented assholes out to make a buck off of someone elses talent. Artist get bootlegged all the time, but we have to watch out for people 24 hrs a day to not get ripped. We can't moniter every single soul, damn. But it sucks when we browse the internet and see our stuff being pimped out, or even worse, go into a record store overseas to try to sell some records, only to find out they already have bootlegs. I have never bought a bootleg that I am aware of, I feel guilty buying a cutout from Cats. I sell "official bootlegs" on my web page and call them the "Tijuana Tapes" (when the bastard is working) for real cheap. If someone wants to hear every bad old demo I did, more power to them. If someone wants to trade because they don't have money (there always is atleast one letter from a prisoner somewhere) I take mojos, icons and religious curios.

Re: ELO
If I remember right, in the "olden days" when bands actually performed "for real," ELO was doing a bunch of dates all tapes. The gear screwed up and they got busted, made fools of themselves and it was the talk of the day. They faded away... ah, but now that we are so open minded, and even have karaoke, they are doing a "come back tour"
RE: SUV's suck
Greeting from Memphis, the car-jack car-stealin rape capitol of America SUV's suck. I can fit my PA, 2 guitars, small amp, and even a 3 piece drum kit in my 62 Mercury (and the dingle balls, hula girl, black power air freshener, and dice look pretty fabulous driving down the road too). Yes, I carry a cell phone in case I get stuck in the ghetto. But if I do in my car, I know enough about it to maybe get it going again (unless I am stupid enpough to run out of gas got mugged once when I let that happen). But atleast in my car, no one in the ghetto want to mess with me as much as if I was in a brand new $500 a month SUV. Hell, they could figure out how to crank my car! And with my neon under plate floaters, they sure as hell will be easily spotted when I get the cops on thier ass.

Re: Reading between the lines
This is much like the music debate, either you like it or you don't...but please don't try and stamp a # on my forehead and call me just another asshole because I drive an SUV. quick to plug SUV drivers as a certain type. The great majority of folks do not subscribe to P2 to discuss SUVs. How did George Jones' driving mistake turn into this conversation? Jee-sus! Derek, Paul, whoever, darlin, ya'll calm down. I don't think I ever once mentioned that people who drive SUV's were assholes. Where the hell did you get that? I enjoyed other comments from those on the list who mentioned older cars and just got a little nastalgic. Hey ya'll, I did not say SUV drivers suck, I just personally don't dig the vehicle. So what? I don't like green food either, so what? Infact, I think green food sucks so what? Talking about a car is one thing, but I certainly don't want any of you to suggest that I would rag on your character because of what you drive, music you listen to (unless you like *insert worst band on earth you can think of*g), what color you are, what you wear, bla bla bla. Hell, I don't even know you. Ya'll express your opinions about everything under the sun, sometimes ya'll just talk about music. Sometimes music moves to baseball. Sometimes serious subjects like a legend who has a car wreck moves to cell phones or to SUV's. More power to you if you are the proud owner of an SUV. Great. Get one of those 19 foot jobbies. For me, I would rather have an old boat gas guzzlin Cadillac. I'll settle for my Merc. Big deal. So what? Read whatever you feel you must into that, I just like old cars! Often times on this list, people tend to read too much in-between the lines. Now I am sure there is some music or musician that can be discussed, ragged upon, picked apart, analyzed, second guessed, trashed or maybe even phrased. My sincere deepest apologies to all of you for ever having made any comments about SUV's, among other things on this list. Love, Nancy P.S. rash judgments about you as a slacker musician driving an old car. (My point there isn't that you are a slacker musician - my point is, stereotypes aren't always true) That's a good one. Just like Nicholas Cage said about his gooney jacket he wore in Wild At Heart, I do PERSONALLY think that some things we select for ourselves do reflect our individuality. Again, SO WHAT The term slacker musician seems odd though, since all the musicians I know work harder than anyone. No point in touching that one tho..
Re: Shania Spam / and gossip
yes, I have gotten that Shania crap. Could not figure out who sent it. Get this ya'll. A freind of mine who is setting up a tour for me in Canada this summer just got thru working production at the big rodeo in Houston, where many country acts played, including Shania. He said that most the show was taped (including vocals). How do artists plan to get away with this. Remember what happened to ELO. They sure end up looking like fools if the DAT fails. Oh well... Please read my comments at the end out the word fuck March 8, 1999 Car Tunes 4-6 Pm Mondays on WEVL FM 90 in Memphis, TN George Jones - Why Baby Why Hadacol - Big Tornado Riverbluff Clan - Opal's Prayer / Until I'm Gone Robert Earl Keen - I'm Going to Town Elena Skye - I'll Try Not To Cry Tonight The Ghost Rockets - Under The Table Janis Martin - My Boy Elvis Groove Grass 101 - Howdy Martin's Folly - She Comes Around Ex Husbands - I Was Born To Wander Terry Allen - Southern Comfort Clarence Gatemouth Brown - Tulsa Time Jessica Andrews - Hungry Love Brooks Williams - My Love Will Follow You Asylum Street Spankers - Cake Walk (another album I wish they put a notice on about the f-word for us that are trying to cover our ass) Jimmy Murphy - You Touched Me and Made Me Live Again George Jones - I Can Live Forever Wilco - I'm Always In Love Gravel Train - Fine Upstanding Man Claudia Church - Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow Mark David Manders - Friend Like You Iguanas - You Killed My Buzz Hogwaller Ramblers - You're a Mess Cheryl Wheeler - Potato Steve Earle and Del Mc - Leroy's Dust Bowl Blues Lone Justice - Cotton Belt Lucinda Williams - Still I Long For Your Kiss Lucinda Williams - Joy Paul Burch - Long Tall Glass Of Water George Jones - May The Circle Be Unbroken Ok, so I have had a lot of crap going on and will spare you the miserable details, but the last darn thing I want to worry about is playing a word on a radio show that I volunteer for that will get me in hot water, or the station. I want to once again comment on the use of the word fuck in recorded music. I personally don't care if the artist wants to do this. Sometimes it is the only way to get the point across. Example: I am fucken tired of bands sending radio with the word fuck slipped in without any mention of it! (Get it she says as she grins really big). Most of the records I get at home are not edited for radio because I also do reviews etc. So I have to really make sure before I broadcast anything on Car Tunes. However, WEVL gives me numerous CDs every week to screen for them, to see if it is something we might want to include on some of the WEVL shows. It sure would be nice if these records we get at the station had a mention that they use one of the 7 words we are not allowed to broadcast, so we would not have to waste precious time week after week listening over and over to make sure that we don't let something slip thru the cracks. If there was a sticker saying that word was there, I could simply skip that song. I was really grooving the Street Spankers CD when WEVL gave it to me to approve. then out of the blue, there it is. No lyrics printed for me to double check against. This really sucked. I have not had a chance to listen again, but I think even the Terry Allen has "shit" I can't play. PLEASE get the word out to bands you know or work with to help us out at radio. After all, we are helping you by playing your music (when it's good, or does not have one of those "dirty evil" words...) Come on!!! Remember we have to do what the FCC says, we are not in a country that is radio-hip-free. Man, I am in the Bible Belt.. Help me out Hat's off to the Hogwaller Ramblers for the sticker they had on the front of the CD I recieved. If they got that idea from here, thanks for listening. Let's don't drag this thru the wringer again here, but PLEASE forward this to anyone you know that sends CDs to radio stations. Thanks Nancy

Re: UT/Media/my take
I think that the media did help get the word out about UT, but it was in response to reaction from all the kids that were diggin their sounds. I think that it is not so much that the media did not know about the Commader Cody's etc, but that the kids digging UT did not have a clue about them. To the kids, UT was the first they ever heard of this stuff.

Re: George Jones' singing
That way of singing has been his thing since he figured it our shortly after he began singing. He said that he knew he had a different sound when he did that. This is interesting. Could you point me to where he has said this? --david cantwell There is a book called George Jones The Life and Times of a Honky Tonk Legend by Bob Allen. It is not the best written book, Bob says so himself in the opening. (He uses many of thew same words and phrases over and over and over and..) But it has a lot of good information, and tells the whole story about George. Bob got some good stuff from George. In reference to his singing it talks about after he saw Hank Williams and Hank had so much emotion that it moved him. It says in the book (I can't believe I found this part, I feel like suck a fucking geek): "Now approaching his late teens, he (George) found that his singing voice had dropped and it was increasingly more difficult for him to sing comfortably in the high tenor range that was so often affected by his idols, Roy Acuff and Bill Monroe. He discovered that these new songs of Hank Williams's fit almost perfect into his new vocal range, almost like a hand in glove. He had also come to realize by this time that he could save consideralble wear and tear on his voice during a long night of singing in a smoke-filled bar if he occasionally backed off from his usual all-out 'full-throat' delivery and changed things up by singing, instead, with his mouth partially closed or even with his teeth slightly clinched. He discovered this allowed him to dramatically bend, twist and otherwise embellish individual notes, with all the power and precision of a woodwind player. Even more important, he found that this also enabled him to hold back the full power of a melody and let it resonate eerily in his throat, giving the impression of barely controllable emotions swirling wildly around inside him, held in fragile, temporary abeyance. When he did this, he also noticed that it not only timgled his own spine, but seemed to send cold chills though all those who listened." Amen. I guess you can tell I dig George Jones. I'm a geek. Man, oh man. It is hard to get over gigs like that. Know what it feels like afterward. Bless her heart. She seemed frightened.

Patti Bell and the Bell Rangers
Anyone know anything about Patti Bell and the Bell Rangers. Someone called my radio show and said I should check them out, and they also were curious as to any records, etc. I was told that there is a song or two on a NIagra Niagra Soundtrack, but I have not found that.
Re: Katti Bell and the Bell Rangers
So do they have any records released that can be found in the south, if so where?
Re: Katie Bell and the Bell Rangers
It must be Katie. Like I said, a caller has been bugging me to find out about her, records, tec. how to get them, so ya'll tell me. I am not familiar with her, and no one in any of the stores here have.
Re: sxsw - doggin
Many of you have not gotten the point that I had tried to make. I agree with all of you that you have to make your own opportunites, network, exposure, bla bla bla... SXSW is great. Go home and tell em you went. Make contacts. bla bla on and on. The point is simply this. SXSW seems to have a good racket going with the ticket price, registration price, hotel deals bla bla bla. Damn they have got to make a lot of money. SOmeone is making a lot of money. DO they have to keep all of it. Can any more of it go back to the bands somehow? All I am hearing are the stories that it was great, but stressfull, we ate peanut butter for a month afterward, etc SXSW would not be jack shit if bands did not show up. It would be nice if the bands could actually be compensated better than they are right now. Seems to me that whoever is in charge is worried about "putting on a good show" and "going to the bank afterwards." Again I say, if bands did not show up SXSW would not be jack shit. My redneck-hate-to-see-musicians-get-used opinion.
Re: sxsw - doggin
That's the way the music industry works, actually. My last comment on the subjest, and I promise I will shut up. I am really sorry if I have stumbled upon a touchy subject for many of you. It just seems like we all love music so much, and I am not just being selfish when I suggest that we try to give something more back to the musicians who give so much to us. SXSW is a good thing for the bands that get to play. The whole experience has got to be great. Just playing in Austin is cool. I have never been accepted to SXSW, I quit send them shit in the early 90s. But it would be a good gesture on their part to at the very least give all band members passes to everything so no one is left out. It would also be cool to have a cafeteria catering set up so thebands can atleast get a couple decent meals a day, for free. With all the sponsorships, don't you think someone would want to make sure the musicians are fed. Hell, tell someone to call Fred Smith at Fed Ex here i Memphis. I bet HE would want to make sure they all eat. And last, if SXSW did these things, then the bands would be much happier, probably play much better, and may not feel so bad about how much income they lost in travel and hotel to do it. I bet if Elvis were still alive, he would not play for SXSW unless they fed him.

Re: SXSW - band pay
the standard package is that bands get either $175 cash -or- wristbands for all band members and 1 crew member and a badge for one member of the band. Well thank God they get something. Now I am sure that with the $400 that the ring leaders of SXSW charge to attend, and the big ass wrist band price they also get, SXSW can start working toward the goal of putting the bands up in a nice trailer park sometime in the near future. My point is this. Like any cattle call, the bands put all thier hopes and dreams and wishes into it. They pull together gas money to drive from bum fuck to attend if they are accepted, and SOMEONE is making a pile of dough on thier dreams. The least any band can ask if they play anywhere, CATLLE CALL or GIG, is to have a warm, safe place to stay for the night (even if it is being hosted by a local band, on the living room floor), food to fill them up, and enough gas money to get them to and from the gig without taking food from the mouths of their loving supporting families back home in bum fuck. Ahh, but THAT would be a perfect world huh, or a Lucinda Williams song.

Label: Giant. It's "She's Got A Way About Her" gone country. Too bad a great marketing plan can't help you hit the hard slider. Or curve. Or fast ball. Or change-up, for that matter. If you could hit off the tee forever, Garth Brooks would be in the baseball Hall of Fame before Easter. After the media coverage this week, you'd think Garth was a shoe-in for Cooperstown. You might expect to hear that Mark McGwire had called up for a for tips on how to handle the high, hard one. Of course, if you've played baseball beyond Little League and you saw the TV shots of Garth in the batting cages this week, it would take about 10 seconds to sniff this one out. Despite his college and high school athletic background, Garth ain't no spring chicken by Major League Baseball standards. Depending on which reference you consult, he celebrated a 36th or 37th birthday last week. Facts. Around 1,000 men will play Major League Baseball in 1999. Two- thirds will spend the entire season in The Show, the rest will be up and down between the majors and the minors. The vast majority will be in their 20's. Only 3 or 4 dozen will be older than Garth. Baseball is a game of mental skill, critical hand to eye coordination, and physical strength. By Garth's age, most major league players are former major league players and already entrenched in another career. Of those who remain valuable players into their late 30's, most will have survived on experience...s a v v y. All will have battled through more than one near career-ending hamstring pull, groin injury, and/or torn rotator cuff. Michael Jordan, perhaps America's greatest athlete since Jim Thorpe, bombed at the Double A level of professional baseball. Michael could run, of course. Since he didn't spend his young adult years in front of a microphone, Michael had the advantage of keeping in shape on an NBA court several nights a week. Great for the legs and lungs. If Michael could've just hit off a tee and not faced that doggone slider, things might have turned out differently for him in baseball. The Padres made it to the World Series last fall and immediately started a fire sale of their top players. It's a franchise that has gone through at least 3 ownership groups in the past 10 years, a franchise where fresh investment money can't be found fast enough. You can bet the Padres' honchos knows that ol' Garth is worth an estimated $ 75 million dollars. That might be play money for some major league baseball players, but it's more than most members of baseball's ownership groups are worth. For the most part, limited partners and minority owners are men (and a handful of women) who have achieved great success in other fields and take a small ownership interest in a major league franchise as an ego-stroking trophy. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, and the players appreciate the revenue stream. Garth may dream of slamming World Series homers. Haven't we all. But I suspect the Padres' ownership is setting up the golden one for an invitation to join their little ownership group. In the meantime, you've got to admire the guy's incredible ability to get media attention. John Michael Montgomery and wife Crystal are happy parents again. SXSW - What is the deal
What is the deal with SXSW anyway? It seems it is no longer a cattle call for "new undiscovered" talent, but a chance for record companies to jerk off and flaunt who they have in front of others. Ok, I can see someone playing to maybe try to get a booking agent if they don't have one, or a manager, or even better distribution bla bla, or hell, a label even. But you can't tell me that many of the people they have playing don't already have much of that working for them? Come on... Leon Russell, Lucinda, Cesar Rosas... man. If these guys really need to play a cattle call then I am pretty damn depressed. I have records by many of the bands I saw on the list. Are they paying these guys to play to help draw a crowd? Someone tell me, do these guys really need to do these gigs?

Re: Grifters/Bastard Souls
Hi there, yes all the Grifters have side projects (I think), but I don't think sthey are not getting along or anything like that. Could be, when you tour it is easy to want to strangle the shit out of a band mate who needs it.. The only way we in Memphis make a living in Memphis is to have more than one band going at a time... It gets confusing sometimes, in my case, I forget what band knows what songs. I will find out what the Griters are all up to with one call to Sherman, at Shangri-la Records. He knows all those guys and what they are doing. Over and out, Nancy
Re: Bottle Rockets
Black Oak Arkansas, a band even uglier and far worse than Henneman Co. had 3 gold records in the 70's That was the 70s Jim "Joe Bob" Dandy looked much better in white spandex, in fact the thought of the bottle rockets in spandex makes me ill
Re: TwangCommie for Mac
Mike, We are not down on what you are doing. We love you. We just want to continue to use our Macs, and also enjoy TwangCast. Macs are cooler, Microsoft just tries to copy what Macs have been doing for years. Right on to all of you Mac folks! Nancy Apple (big grin)
Re: indieaudio.com
In a message dated 2/4/99 11:12:02 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Just had a nice conversation with Bruce Paisley, owner/operator of the site recently discussed here and I believe his heart is in the right place, his biggest problem being the wording of the web site which he admits is a bit vague on the rights issue. It seems like he'll re-do the wording and specify the exact terms of the agreement with artists for the use of the songs. I am so glad to hear that. I hate to think I have lost my skill for telling the difference between a nice guy and a wele. Oh wait, ex husbands don't count. Like I said, I had not seen him for years when he called out of the blue all excited about this new thang. Mike, thanks so much for setting him straight, and glad the two of you hooked up. Nancy
Global Media/straight form the horse's mouth
Danm, that was wierd. I was just reading all the comments about GLobal Media, when Bruce Paisley (guy at Global Media) called me. I just flat out asked him what the hell was the deal with the waiver and bla bla and are they trying to fuck over musicians. So he said, that right now no one knows what kind of royalties need to be paid via any internet broadcast. That is why they only want indies so that someone like Clint Black (another cowboy he used to work with) don't come back and raise hell. I told him that I understood there was a way that places like TwangCast was keeping up with it, and even tho it may be small, they were paying the fair share. So, Gobal Media does not want anyone to be pissed at them. It sounds like they are trying to get some exposure for bands, and he says that he is checking into everything to find out with BMI/ASCAP etc. He said the waiver is to cover their asses that the material is indeed original, and they don't want to hagle with majo labels and all the red tape with them, but they do want to pay the artists for what they use. So there ya go. Do you think he is talking out of both sides? And by the way, he is probably listening to TwangCast right now Dang, it's a small world!
Re: Global Media/Twangcast
In a message dated 2/3/99 1:11:29 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Presumably, that waiver is the price they're being asked to pay in order to have access to potential buyers, bookers, etc. (This may not be on their web site, I have not looked at it but the guy I know there told me this) It is my impression that Global Media has a way in the works that a person can download certain songs thru them and make custom CD's, and that artist will be paid from the record sales there on a per song basis. I have a fax from them that says in order to broadcast a song, they need "Proof of mechanical rights, Signed waver of copyright holders allowing Global Media COrp to broadcast specific thracks on internet web site" I guess, they just don't want to pay to play your song, but will pay if someone buys it. Is this right? This is how I understood it from Bruce Paisley. I thought Bruce was an ok guy. I met him when he worked for Dwight Yoakum years ago, and he seemed ok, but hell, what do I know? I also got the impression from Bruce that they were really going to pump up each artist they play with bios and graphics and all kinds of crap like that who knows.. I would sure hate for him to turn out to be a big ass LIAR. Lets face it, if it turns out to be a crock then it won't be the first time I ever got screwed. And hell, I look at my music as something I want to share. If someone wants to bootleg me, more power to 'em. Let karma take care of it if they make a lot of dough and I end up eating peanut butter the rest of my life. Yes, I like and need to be paid, but I am the kind that would stand out on a corner on Beale and play for nothin just to be playing. It's great that many of the "hip cool public commercial free radio stations" play our stuff, but not all of them are hip enough like Mike to report it. Long live Mike Long live Mike Long live Twangcast.
Re: specific thracks

Re: American/creating a scene
we have to do some flag-waving ourselves the fact that 5 of the Grammy Nominees in the Cont. Folk Category this year are "Americana" acts, alt-country, ya'llternative, ya'llterna-honk, what ever you want to call it, THIS HELPS CREATE A SCENE. Use this flag to raise enough awareness that this music is different, deserves its own category in the Grammys, and then everyone else will eventually catch on. If an artist won a Grammy in "Alterna honk" this would open doors for all other similar artists, sales, gigs, everywhere. Hell, might even get lucky after a show from time to time g (I did not say that)

Re: Clubs/Social Security
Many clubs, and especially festivals I play at want my SS # since I am the ring leader. I fill out all the paper work they can dish out, and pay my band with checks from my music account which is separate from my personal checking account. I sometimes even pay myself with a check (that I later may deposit it personal account etc.). I have never had any problems, and I have done this for years. I file 1099's on my guys and they all pay taxes bla bla bla or atleast I think they do. I have had trouble with Uncle Sam before, but it was over sales tax, which can be a real bitch if you don't have a lawyer or accountant to fall back on. So I hired a lawyer who is also an accountant. I learned that trick from Jerry Lee down here in E Town. Thankyouverrrymuch. Did I mention the buisness end of the music biz sucks? Nancy

Re: AAA/Johnny Cash
The label had used the same photo (and ad concept) once before in a trade magazine, with Johnny's middle finger aimed at AAA radio.--don Ouch, that's kinda biting the hand that feeds it, huh? Thanks for telling me that. I still think Johnny is a stud though.
