Re: 1400 & Mac OS 9

2006-01-17 Thread Richard Adams

Welcome back, Noah!

I've never run OS 9, so I have no input (other than to say I repeatedly hear
that it runs kinda slow on a stock 1400). Are you thinking of getting a G3
upgrade at some point?

What features of OS9 are you really wanting to get? I've considered it, but
haven't heard any compelling reasons to get off 8.5 yet.

Also, I'm a bit curious how you make do with such a smallish hard drive. I
get by okay on one about the same size, but I'm more willing than most to
run older (therefore, smaller) versions of many of my apps. Even at that,
though, I'm starting to feel the squeeze. What applications (and versions)
are you running on your machine?

Thanks for any insights,

Richard

Hello, and first off I would like to announce my re-subscription to
this mailing list. I left as my 1400 died but after about 4 months I
used it and it started to work. Now I have the urge to upgrade my
1400 to Mac OS 9. At the moment I have Mac OS 8.6 and it runs
smoothly and I like it, but I like some of the features of Mac OS 9.
So please give me your thoughts!

Good summary, Gene.

I'd add that the 1400 keyboard is widely favored over the 3400's. Both are
very nice machines overall, as you say.

Higher RAM ceiling (144 vs 64 MB) and PCI vs NuBus architecture would be my
main reasons. Other considerations/comparisons:
- 1400 can be easily upgraded to G3, no upgrade path for 3400. A 3400/240
running OS 8.1 or 8.6 could be fast enough for your uses, though.

- 1400's small form factor and light weight compared to 3400.
- Config details, peripherals and price point will almost certainly vary
widely on the used market. If you stumble into a nice bundle at a good
price, go for it -- don't hold out for a particular model 'Book because of
some arbitrary set of specs/standards in your head. If properly configged
you should be quite content with either model.

Re: Which PowerBook is for me?

2006-01-03 Thread Richard Adams

John,

I've gotten several 1400's for about $10-$20, but they were all As-Is. I've
been lucky that all of 'em worked, but I wouldn't count on getting a good
1400 at that price.

Seems to me like the going rate for 1400's on E-Bay last time I checked was
in the $80-$150 range, so that's pretty close to your stated price range (on
the low end, at least). The 1400 would probably be a pretty good choice,
except for the CD-RW issue. Heck, if I didn't like 'em, I wouldn't have 4 of
'em!

I've never seen the 1400CS screen (all mine are 1400C's), but I imagine it
would be worth whatever extra you'd have to pay to get up to the active
matrix display.

Ciao!

Well, I don't do drugs. So the cheap drugs would be out of the
question ;). I was thinking the 3400c, but I'm assuming I'm not going
to get one for under $50. My second choice would be the 1400c/cs but I
was wondering if I could get anything better. Being able to read
CD-RWs is not extremely important but it would be nice.

Re: Good luck, and questions on NuPowr upgrade

2005-11-22 Thread Richard Adams

That said, OS 9 has much more native PPC code than does OS 8.6. With lots
of RAM and a faster-than-original HD (for speedy-ish VM) OS 9 is faster
in use than any other classic Mac OS. PPC code uses more resources (RAM &
HD space) than 68K code, so you'll not be happy if you have less than
48MB, 64MB is better still. OS 9 does take longer to boot than earlier
systems, just takes longer to load all that extra-sized PPC code.

FYI, you can use up to OS 9.1 on the nubus-based 1400, the 9.2.x updates
require a PCI-based Mac.

SNIP

Thanks for the input, Dan. I had almost bid on a copy of 9.2.2 on E-Bay
until I also uncovered something (I think it was at everymac.com) showing
that 9.1 was the last version that ran on the 1400. I assume that was due to
the system's bus?

Thanks again for the response,

SNIP

I once bought a 1400c on eBay ($30 + shipping) that came with a 250 MHz G3
upgrade.

Ho-ho, that's almost as good a stroke of luck as mine!

The previous owner didn't knew because he didn't
have the NuPowr extension in the system. I just copied the extension to the
Extensions Folder and it showed as intended in the System Profiler.
You don't need the extension, as the CPU will work at its stated speed, but
the extension enables the cache, making it a little faster, and permits
System Profiler to see the upgraded CPU.

Thanks, H.D., that was my next question. I knew it had a cache, but wasn't
sure if I needed to do anything to enable it. I've already put the extension
in the Extensions folder, so I should be good to go!

Thanks for the input!

Thanks for the additional input, Cam, that's very helpful. I currently have
8.5 on this machine (that was what came installed on it), and no

It's great to have this forum to get selfless, sharp help on issues, so
thanks to both you and Dave for taking the time to help, it was invaluable.

I don't know if I would call them really compelling, but 9.1 adds improved
file security, additional shortcuts in the Finder, IP-based AppleShare
without

using AppleShareIP, improved Sherlock, Software Update control panel, and
better multiple-user support. There are also some USB enhancements, like
USB printer sharing over TCP, but this is irrelevant on a 1400, of course.

Myself, I prefer 9.1 to 8.6, but it's because I'm used to all the little
niceities. I would still upgrade to 8.6, though. 8.6's nanokernel improves
performance quite a bit.

When I installed a NuPowr upgrade, there was one file. You run the install
program with the old CPU installed, shut down, install the new CPU and
reboot. Very simple. Installing the CPU is as simple as installing RAM.

The installer I used was the NUpowr 3 v1.0.0 installer. Unstuffed, it is
336 KB. The Sit file was 224 KB. Do you have this one?

SNIP
Thanks for the input, Dave. I don't have that machine on, but I believe the
SIT was about 224 KB. So I unstuff, run the install program, shut down, swap
CPU's, and reboot? That sounds wonderfully simple!

I'm actually quite eager to try this, so I can run System Profiler and find
out just how fast this puppy is! There seems to be nothing on it to indicate
the actual speed.

Thanks ever so much for the input!

Richard

Are some laptop hard drives just inherently noisier than others- i.e. when
the computer or a program starts up and the drive is accessed there are
audible noises heard.

However, other drives just seem to have a quiet hum that they are working.
Are those that are noisier dying? Thanks.

Re: 550c

Vicki,

I typically use an Apricorn PCMCIA adapter that hooks up to a standard IDE
interface to make a laptop drive function as an external drive, then drag
and drop to it. I've used it on Wintel PC's and PowerBooks. The Apricorn
kits (usually sold as 'E-Z Drive', IIRC) are often available on E-Bay for a
reasonable price, and they are very handy.

Does your 550 have a PCMCIA card cage?

Another reasonable and inexpensive alternative is to use CallunaCard PCMCIA
Type III hard drives, easily found in 520 MB and 1 GB sizes.

Re: Which model?

2005-08-24 Thread Richard Adams

John,

I have a number of 1400C machines, and I can recommend them highly (and they
should handle your specified tasks handily). The screen is color and has
good contrast and visibility, the keyboard is very nice and a pleasure to
type on, the 1400C has enough 'oomph' to handle a lot of useful applications
and games, and it has excellent upgrades and enhancements available. If it
just didn't have a 64 MB RAM limit, it could be brought up to near current
standards by available upgrades. I also have a 3400, but somehow like the
1400's better (they're both heavy, but the 1400 is lighter, and that helps).

Don't go for the 1400CS, the screen is unlikely to be satisfactory, and I
don't think you'll see a lot of price differential. I bought my 1400C's for
$20, $10, and $5, plus I got a parts machine for $6 that I have used a
number of parts from on the other machines. I guess a $41 investment for 3
good working machines is not too shabby!

Richard

I am going to have to get a different PowerBook, due to the fact that
the hard drive in my current 520 is dying. Here are the models I am
considering:

165c
180c
1400c
1400cs

which one should I get?

Here is basically what I do on my PowerBook:

Play an old Mac Classic version of Oregon Trail
Write things (using ClarisWorks)
Use SimpleText for Text-to-Speech (I use MacinTalk 3)
Play with Apple Script

As you can see, I don't need alot of RAM, a fast processor, or a big
screen, but color would be nice.
Thanks

Re: powerbook 3400C

2005-07-27 Thread Richard Adams

Brad,

I had similar problems, and they were because the bottom part of the clicker
mechanism had broken off. If you are looking at the clicker mechanism from
the side, it's shaped like a "U" turned on its side. The switch is on the
bottom of the top half of the "U", and it engages the bottom half of that
"U" to activate the 'click'. In my case, that bottom tab had broken off. If
you pushed REALLY hard and/or wiggled the button, you MIGHT get a response.
It's an unfortunate design decision.

To 'repair' it, I taped the bottom piece in place on the board below using a
thick piece of double-sided tape. This secured it and raised it to about the
right level to engage the switch properly again. PITA, though. You have to
take the machine about halfway apart just to get to all this.

Winfidel

Hey there fellow Powerbook lovers; I have a small problem with my 3400C.
It seems that the clicker is stuck. Nothing happens when you click it,
and you can't scroll or anything with it. Also there is a dialogue that
says the clock is showing s date that is wrong. Help please.

Re: Preferred backup method Was "PB 5300c: Silly Question?"

2005-07-12 Thread Richard Adams
Similar to my own process, Caleb. Anything I may need access to when I don't
necessarily have my personal machine gets sent to GMail. Everything else
winds up on CD-R's (eventually). For data transfer (and backup), I mostly
use PCMCIA CallunaCard Type III hard drives, since most of my computers
(including all my Macs) are laptops.

Personally, I use CD-ROMs, when I'm on my Linux machine, or, when I
absolutely
have to have a file that I was working on with my 190, in which case, I
move
it to my desktop, via floppy. I also email files to myself, but, I have
about
5 gigs of combined email storage, between my Gmail, my Yahoo and my
CwazyMail

accounts. Personally, I don't find online storage services to be worth the
money, but, your mileage may vary. But, as I said, between the 160 GB drive
in my Linux machine and the 5 GB of email storage, I don't have to worry,
too

much. Typically, with my 190, I'll just send the file to my Gmail and not
worry about it, because I can access it from wherever I'm at, be it at my
desktop, my grandpa's new Mac Mini, or an internet kiosk in Siberia.

Re: trackpad glossy

Geoff,

Dear God!

Y'know, it occurs to me that "fixes" to many computer problems are not
going to be found in the wood shop. Strange as it may seem, notebooks are
pretty sensitive & complicated devices, and need to be treated with a
little care.

Sanding may fix it cosmetically, but I'd be very surprised if it fixed it
mechanically.

Trackpad areas discolored by friction or finger oil should be cleaned
carefully first. Occasionally, I have found this helps. A careful
application of Windex or similar cleaner on a lint-free soft cloth (NOT
paper towel;bits may come loose & get in the edgesnot good.) often
helps. Be careful, as Fluxstringer pointed out, about getting liquid in the
edges of the trackpad. While probably not fatal, it just doesn't seem like
a good idea to introduce any type of moisture into a notebook of any kind.

If that doesn't help, and you're sure it's not a software bug (who knows?
stranger things have happened...see below...!) I'd look to have the
trackpad replaced. Hell, I've worn out mice in my time (and yes, I was
surprised!), so nothing lasts forever.

There are several places on the web that sell replacement trackpads for the
do-it-yourselfers, or it like me some days you just wake up with the
mechanical acumen of a turtle with a screwdriver, your local Mac shop would
probably install the new parts for a fee.

If it's a newer box, getting service can be a $$$ drag if not under
warranty.
But on the other hand, when a Ferrari blows a flat (and they do!) you
don't fix it with chewing gum & duct tape.

*BTW, there is a software fix for some specific models with this kind of
problem...here's the first couple paras of the read-me. If this applies to
you, or you are interested (and running 9.2.2 & down) drop a line. I
may know where the software is.

Important Information about Trackpad Climate Control
For Your Macintosh PowerBook Computer

What Is Trackpad Climate Control?

Trackpad Climate Control is a system extension that will reduce or
eliminate unexpected movements of the pointer caused by moisture on the
trackpad or humidity. The extension is designed for the Macintosh
PowerBook 190, Macintosh PowerBook 1400, and Macintosh PowerBook Duo 2300.

Who Should Use Trackpad Climate Control?

You should use Trackpad Climate Control if you notice the pointer moving
abruptly when you initially touch the trackpad or "jumping" to its previous
position when you lift your finger after moving the pointer or tapping the
trackpad.

Do not use Trackpad Climate Control if you have not had pointer-movement
problems on your computer. (The extension could make the pointer less
responsive when you use the trackpad.)

The extension works only with the PowerBook 190, PowerBook1400, and
PowerBook Duo 2300.

So there you go. Hope this helps.

Junkyard 1400's and DVD player

Frequently guilty as charged, I'm afraid.

I sympathize on the 1400 having one myself. Nice machine and still highly
useful I would just like to play DVDs for my studies. So am looking to move
up to a Pismo.

IIRC, there was just a thread here a week or two ago that indicated you can
hack a DVD player into the CD-ROM casing on a 1400 and make it work (or
maybe it was a 3400, not a 1400). Am I remembering that correctly? If so,
that might be a cheaper and easier way to get to the same end result.

Junkyard 1400's

2005-05-27 Thread Richard Adams

SNIP

My experience is somewhat similar, Ron. I got my first PowerBook 1400 for
$10 (including a carrying case and power supply), and it worked like a
champ. I then bought a supposedly non-working PB1400 for $6 to get the
bookcover (my original did not have it). Found out AFTER bending the pins
in the socket that the display cables plug into on the MOBO that it
actually did work (although the display was then punked out). Salvaged
pieces off that one to repair three more PB1400's that I got for $20,
$10, and $5, respectively. So, for $51, I have 4 working Powerbooks and a
partial parts machine. Can't complain too much about that.

Ciao,

Cool moniker Winfidel. And this is all very interesting.

But I am learning nothing about what parts combinations vis a vie Pismo (
remember the PB mentioned in the subject line?) that I should avoid. And
any trickiness to assembly..

--
Adrian

No help on that here, Adrian, sorry, my top machine is a 3400C (which I got
at a better price than the 1400 - a friend gave it to me because it wouldn't
power up. Turned out it had a bad power supply, nothing more). So I'm afraid
I don't know much about the Pismo.

Good luck with your FrankenPismo, Doctor. Didn't mean to 'semi-hijack' your

Re: Junkyard Pismo ?

2005-05-26 Thread Richard Adams

I built my 1400c/166w64MB out of 3 different 1400's and a few misc.
parts I bought off Epay. The complete units were all in questionable
condition but had the parts I wanted. I now have all the best goodies
I could get in a 1400 and it's exactly what I wanted.

After all was said and done I probably have more $$ in the 1400c than
I could have bought one for because of the extra parts I have
leftover. But I have enough parts to build 2 1400cs/133's in decent
condition and could always sell those off to recoup some $$.

It was a learning experience and a project for me. The shipping costs
can be outrageous on Epay but if you take your time you can get decent
deals and I did buy a few of the wrong parts.

I could have found a 1400c/166 for less than I have in mine but it was
a good experience and I would do it the same again.

I have been toying with the idea of building a Pismo from parts or
parts machines next in the same way.

Hi, all!
It's time to join the mobile masses! Just scored a PB
1400c/133/2G/64/CD/floppy on ebay, and I really wanna trick this puppy out.
Looking for recommendations on where to find accessories and upgrades,
the cheaper the better since I'm on a fixed income.

Gonna put upgrading to G3 on the back burner for now, as it's intended as a
light-duty unit. Definitely wanna go wi-fi, though. Where am I likely to
find the best deals on Orinoco cards, other than ebay? Also, I'm pretty
sure I wanna get a CF card and PC slot adapter, to use as a
power-conserving boot drive. Amazon.com seems to have a few good deals on
this stuff - anyone know of a cheaper source? 256 MB CF seems large enough
for this purpose to me; anyone know of any compelling reasons to go larger?

TIA for any and all info.

that the thieves would not want anyways, and most likely threw away.
In truth you can't expect the police to do much of anything for you in most

Re: powerbook power supply

2005-01-06 Thread Richard Adams
A friend had the same problem with a 3400. He took it apart, figuring it was
probably a bad solder connection on the motherboard. Couldn't find anything
wrong, but it eventually got to the point where it wouldn't turn on no
matter how much jiggling he did, so he gave it to me. I grabbed the power
supply off my 1400, plugged it in, and went right to work on it. So, yeah,
that's the first thing I'd check - the power supply.

Hello everyone
I have a 1 GHz 15" Powerbook, about two-three years old. Recently I've
noticed that plugging in the power supply, it often doesn't make a
connection. I don't get green or amber, and the battery indicator tells me
that no juice is getting in. If I play with where the plug meets the
powerbook a bit, I can get it lighting and juicing up - but I'm having to
play with it more and more, and it's beginning to make me anxious.

Without giving any more to go on, does this sound to someone like a problem
with the power adaptor/cord? Or the jack in the powerbook where it goes
in?

Any help / advice is appreciated.

Follow-on.
We have also just found an old Excel 98 (for Macs) CD stored in the bottom
draw plus an ApplePower Macintosh G3 Start-up disk with OS 8.00 on it
(Silver coloured Apple CD) Anyone need either?
Sorry about the dollar exchange rate but will cost about $8 airmail postage
plus Paypal commission to US or about £2.70 to UK for one or $10 to US or
£3.00 to UK for both.
We are still clearing so may even find some other goodies.

Remote Access Dial-Up question

2004-12-13 Thread Richard Adams
OK, fellow Duo listers and Powerbook listers,
I have tried and tried to puzzle out why I can't get my Duo270C on the web,
so now I come to request assistance.

Remote Access is in the Control strip. If I go to it and click Connect,
there's no response. If I open Remote Access and click Connect from the
dialogue box, I hear a brief click and I get a box saying, 'The Connection
Attempt Failed. The port may be in use by another application. Check for
other uses of the port, like a fax receiving software. Also check AppleTalk
and Modem control panels that they are not using the same port.'

The protocol under Remote Access options is set to PPP. The system is
running OS 7.6.1. If I go to the Config PPP Control Panel, I get a PPP Down
message. Port name is set to Internal Modem. If I click Open, I get an error
indicating 'The Serial Port that was selected to be used by PPP seems to be
in use by something else. If AppleTalk is active, it may be using this
serial port preventing PPP from using it.'

If I go to the AppleTalk Control Panel, it tells me 'AppleTalk is currently
inactive' I tell it No to the activate AppleTalk question, so AppleTalk
is off.

The extensions I see loading that look like they might be relevant are:
OpenTPTAppleTalkLib, OpenTPTInternetLib, OpenTransportLib, Open TPT
AppleTalk Library, Open TPT Internet Library, Open Transport Library,
OpenTPT Modem 68K, OpenTPT Remote Access 68K, OpenTPT Serial Arbitrator,
EtherTalk Phase 2, Internet Config Extension, Network Extension, PPP, and
Remote Only.

The modem is internal, and is set in the Modem Control Panel as Connect Via:
Internal Modem, and Modem: Global Village X2. Startup Items is empty. The
TCP/IP Control Panel has Connect via PPP, Configure Using PPP Server, and
the Name Server addresses my ISP specifies.

Now, given the Fax advisement, the machine does have Global Village's
GlobalFax FaxCenter installed, but I can't find a way to turn it off, or
even check to see if its turned on. It's not launching at Startup, and I'm
not running it before trying Remote Access. If I open it and go to FaxCenter
- SetUp - Receiving to see if there's some automatic 'listening' turned on
or some such, I just get the Ding noise and no dialogue box.

This machine was bought used, so I haven't installed everything on it and
don't have a solid basis to evaluate what should or shouldn't be removed or
uninstalled. I had a 280C and tried to install OS 7.5 new from diskettes
after wiping the hard drive, but got an error during the install and was
unable to complete the OS installation. Got the same error when re-trying
the same thing on a Duo230C. So my favored course of action, to install from
scratch so I know exactly what's on the machine, did not prove workable.

Any help would be very much appreciated, I'd really like to get this machine
up on the Internet to read mail and web browse!

Please cc: any reply to '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' so I can be sure to get it. Thanks!
Richard

I may "inherit" it. He says it is a G3 but doesn't know more.
Numbers on the back read: 14.1TFT/233MHz-512K/32MB/2GB HD/4MB

I can make sense of everything but the 14.1TFT.
Does this number ID the PowerBook?
Thanks.

Re: Processor Upgrades for PowerBook 1400

2004-11-10 Thread Richard Adams
I can't speak to how worthwhile it is, but I saw one of the processor
upgrades on E-Bay a while back for about $70. There was one on there last
night for about $150.

I certainly agree that I wouldn't pay $300 for the upgrade when you can
still get a complete 1400 for about $50-$100 - just seems disproportionate.
Too bad you can't either put more RAM in a 1400, or drop in the processor
upgrade on a 3400, 'cuz I have both, and they both are kinda dead-ended in
terms of upgrade potential.

But I got the 1400 for $10, and the 3400 for free, so I can't complain!

You can impress no one with a faster 1400. ( unless it is real cheap to buy
the accellerator) better to put the money toward a Pismo or iBook. And get
more features too.

I have a 1400 as you know but I can't see a $ 300.00 investment in it.

Has anybody on this list got a feel for or an opinion about the subject
of
"diminishing returns" for processor upgrades on a PB1400? What I'm
wondering
is whether a Sonnet 466MHz G3 upgrade is mostly wasted money because the
33MHz system bus can't use any (or much of) processor power above a certain
level anyway. In other words, maybe a 233MHz G3 upgrade gets most (>90%) of
the performance improvement that a 466MHz upgrade would get because of the
very low system bus speed. Anyway I'm open to hearing your opinions on the
topic. Thanks. John Hixson

Re: 1400c

2004-10-09 Thread Richard Adams
Actually, there is a bracket - it's a thin metal item that has a tab that
fits into the side of the case and overlaps the hard drive cable. Makes it
extremely hard to get a hard drive back in without taking the case partially
apart or taking a chance on trying to yank the cable out from where it's
folded up under the case.

Re: Best of two PB1400s

2004-09-12 Thread Richard Adams
From my one try at breaking one down, I'd say it's pretty easy to swap the
screens. Just be careful with the two plugs that go into the sockets on the
motherboard. There's not much room to get your fingers down there to push
'em in, and on the one I tried it on, they're pretty brittle and easy to
break.

1400 Manuals?

2004-08-12 Thread Richard Adams
I found a 1400 site that used to have PDF's of the manuals, but they had

know of a live site or source to get these? I just got a 1400C/117 (for TEN
dollars!), and would like to find out more about it.

Also, is there a good site to walk you through getting online on OS 7.6? I
have an ISP, but am not familiar with the requirements to get online via the
Mac OS. I may have an option to switch to OS 8.5 shortly, is that a lot
easier to get online with?

Thanks for any help!

Bookies,
I know I found a page with info on this machine but I lost it.
The machine is a 520 "Blackbird" form factor but is the Apple PPC 603/100
model with "PowerPC" in the space on the screen case where you would
normally see 520c. Can some one better at Googling point me to that page
please?

Re: Excel Help Anyone? (OT)

2004-06-22 Thread Richard Adams
Don,
To 'enhance' it can be done, but is a significant amount of work. In a
nutshell:

Go to View - Toolbars - Forms. Click the Combo Box icon (looks like a bar
with a drop-down), draw the box on the screen, then right click and go to
Format Control. The specifics will vary from there, depending on your design
parameters for your input form.

More simply, you can turn off the AutoComplete (the function you're
describing), under Tools - Options - Edit tab - uncheck Enable AutoComplete
for Cell Values.

I am pulling these specific instructions from Excel 2000 on a Windows
machine, but the menus should be the same, or at least quite similar, on
whatever version of Excel you are on.

HTH!

Are there any Excel masters out there? I surely am NOT
and what should be a simple fix has so far eluded me.
I have an item checklist which has one column which
contains a list of items. The column immediately to
its left is a narrow column which will receive either
a "Y", an "N", or an "NA" (Yes, No, or Not Applicable)
My problem is that at some point in the construction,
a few of these narrow cells (and I do mean only
several) have magically become intuitive in a
disagreeable way. They will accept a "Y", but when an
"N" is typed, those few cells create a drop down menu
which is populated with "NA" and Excel populates the
cell with "NA" even if you only type "N" and "return".
I would like to either loose this intuitive ability
altogether, or enhance it so that each item had a
selection which included both "N" and "NA" (in that
order) so a choice could be made from the list's
natural state of "Y". Copying cells which act one way
into cells which act the other has not been
effective.I don't know what turned this on in these
few cells. I don't know how to improve it to become
useful, and I can't find a way to turn it off.
Anybody have any ideas as to how to kill or enhance
Excel's intuition?

Re: clock battery prob on 180c & where to find it?

2004-03-12 Thread Richard Adams
Bill,

Mine is a PB 280C duo, so I'm not sure if the issues are the same, but it
does sound like the PRAM battery to me (performs the same basic function as
a CMOS battery on a PC). On the Duo 280, it's two watch-type batteries (I
believe they're actually welded together), surrounded in a sheath of
plastic, with a couple of wires coming out, if I recall correctly (been a
while since I had the Duo open, and I am admittedly far from an expert). On
the Duo, seems like it was under the keyboard and close to the hard drive.

I have a PB180c which appears in fine shape except that the day &
time change constantly before my eyes. Setting Date & Time in Control
Panels seems to have no effect. Would this be a clock/cmos battery
problem?
I have another 180c for parts that I have completely disassembled
looking for something resembling a small battery with no luck. Can
anyone tell me where to find it? My floppy seems to be shot as well,
and I want to reinstall, but would rather not go in more than once so
I'd really like to find this solution soon. Thanks for any input.

According to Apple, an enabler is only required for Sys. 7.1
7.6.1 runs fine on my 540c without one.

Dan,

Actually, I'm installing from floppies, not CD. At what point do I need to
get the enabler, and where and how do I install it? I know I'll need to get

installing the OS itself?

I believe that you need an enabler on both machines to load 7.6, or any new
system. That is a little software program that may be on your cd now.
However, after several experiences, be sure that you run HDSC Setup so that
you
update the hd driver. The system will not load if you don't and you will
not
be able to boot from it. Also, run the disktools and check the hd before
you
try to load a system. Any needed enabler may (and I think, will) load
automatically. So, first update the driver with hdsc setup, then run
disktools
to check out the hard disk, and then do your install and I'll bet it will
work. If you have tried these, I couldn't tell from your posting.

Installing OS 7.5

2004-02-07 Thread Richard Adams
Can anyone give me a step-by-step procedure or maybe point me to any web
page telling how to install OS 7.6 on a PowerBook DUO from scratch? I tried
on both a Duo230 and a 280C, and both punked out on me with an error message
at the same point during installation.

Unfortunately, I don't have the machines out (am moving and they are
currently packed up), nor did I make a note of the exact error message. I'm
just betting I missed something in the install process. I know there's
something called a 'system enabler', but I don't know if I need one, where
to put it, or when to install it.

Any help appreciated, but I know this is kinda vague. Once I get the (ugh)
moving done, I'll retry the installation and make a few notes on what
happens and when.

Thanks!

Re: apple

2004-01-06 Thread Richard Adams
I agree, Drew, and not just because I'm "The Winfidel"(;^{)). Apple
determines who their vendors are, not the end user. It may not be Apple's
FAULT, but it is their RESPONSIBILITY to take care of it. It would be a
different story if the end user was picking and choosing the components, but
they aren't. The disappointing thing is that so many people attest that
Apple denied or abdicated their responsibility for the video chip failure,
much as they did with the 5300's and their well documented problems.

But other than that, the 5300 is a terrible example. The reason Apple kept
repairing them is _because_ they were so shoddy. IIRC, class action
lawsuit against Apple required them to support the 5300 for as long as they
did. Technically, California law held them to supporting the 5300 for 7
years from the last date of manufacture (which ended just this summer).

The REA was not a result of Apple being a good corporate citizen. It was
because they really screwed up the 5300 and were forced to fix them.
SNIP
My feelings are that if Apple released a machine with poor quality due to
poor QA (even if it's not an Apple part that failed - and then what _would_
count as an Apple part? Virtually every ASIC on the board is designed by a
3rd party - very little is Apple custom. And NONE of it was fabbed by
Apple.), then Apple should have to pay the piper. Apple sells the box,
Apple supports the box, Apple should FIX the box.

Peace,
Drew

Not to be pedantic, but a claw hammer (outside this particular context) is a

Re: Running Mac OS on a Windoze PC?

2002-10-02 Thread Richard Adams

If no one else has jumped on this, I would definitely be interested! Always
room for one more 'retro'puter', and I distinctly remember lusting for the
Atari computers, but having no shot at being able to afford 'em! Don't have
a lot to trade, I fear, but I do have some 'vintage' Mac software on
original diskettes. I'll have to go through my collection to send you a
list, but I don't think it's anything spectacular. Which Mac or Macs are you
running? I know I at least have Lotus 123 for Mac, and Adobe Type
Manager/Fonts, plus a few others, but they're all probably System 7 or 6
vintage apps at best. Be happy to part with them, if they're of any use to
you.

Thanks!

Re: Racist remarks?

2002-07-08 Thread Richard Adams

Uh, Dave?

This page is associated with LandoverBaptist.ORG, and is a satire - a parody
- not meant to be taken literally. It is set up for the purpose of poking
fun at people whose attitudes are similar to the ones portrayed. Landover
Baptist does have a disclaimer squirreled away on their site somewhere
specifying that it is strictly a parody/satire site. Taken in that context,
it is a frequently hysterically funny site (the review of "The Green Mile"
is not to be missed).

Ciao,

Richard

Re: HELP!

2002-03-29 Thread Richard Adams

Well said, Chuck. I believe most of the denizens of this list are like
yourself - reasonable, civil, and courteous. For this I am thankful. Best
just to block and/or ignore those who act otherwise - they clearly don't see
how their tone and attitude discredits themselves more than their targets.
Thanks to you and the majority of other list members who maintain the
general courteous tone that prevails here!

My experience with Acer has been that their customer service is absolutely
AWFUL! I rue the day they bought out TI's laptop line and I had to start
going through them for service issues - I had a number of problems with them
over a long period of time, with both an AcerLite 361 Notebook and my
TravelMates. I would never do business with them again.

Thanks again, MD, I suspected the FPU would almost even it all up. I figure
the 280's lack of sound was probably due to the loose cable that's been
described before, but I wasn't confident enough to crack the case. Now that
I've got a fully functioning 270C (which also seems to have a good PRAM and
is keeping correct time and date, which the 280 wasn't), I don't know if
I'll even try opening the 280C at this point (the 270C only cost me $50,
which is probably a good investment compared to the amount of time and
aggravation involved in fixing the 280C). I think I'll probably just leave
the 280C in the DuoDock all the time and use it as a desktop.

Thanks to you (and everyone else who replied) for all the help.

Thanks, Mad Dog. Anyone have any ideas of what the real-time differences are
between the 270C and 280C? My 280C has no sound, so I'm thinking that's
probably worth the slow-down of dropping back to a 270C. Anything that won't
run, or anything that will be noticeably slower?

Thanks, everybody,

[no subject]

2002-03-22 Thread Richard Adams

Got a question, listers.

I just downloaded Stuffit Expander from Aladdin's web site on my work PC,
but my new Powerbook 270C doesn't recognize it - trying to go to the PC
Exchange Control Panel to find something to open with (only SimpleText is
there). Found a de-binhexed version (.BIN) and downloaded it, same thing.
How do I persuade the machine to install this? Also, can anyone give me a
quick 'n' dirty idea of the differences between the 270C and 280C?

Thanks for any help, much appreciated.

Ed,

Is your last SCSI device (presumably the CD-ROM) terminated? I don't know
about this specific issue, but SCSI chains should have a terminator at the
end.

Good luck,

Re: Re[2]: weird problem with Powerbook 520

2001-10-17 Thread Richard Adams

I appreciate the input, Mike, but there is no speaker jack on the back of a
Duo 280C. However, the principle is sound enough, and I should be able to
apply it when my recently purchased Duo Dock arrives. Thanks for the idea!

Re: weird problem with Powerbook 520

2001-10-17 Thread Richard Adams

Thanks for the tips, I appreciate them. I thought the PPC upgrade was just a
chip replacement, I don't know if I'll bother with it if it's a lot more
involved (probably better for me to just get a 2300 or better on E-Bay at
that point - then again, I wanted the Duo largely 'cause I drastically
prefer trackballs over touchpads).

It's handy to know that the same cable goes to the LCD and sound output -
the display looks fine, so that cable is probably OK. I've only tried to get
sound through the Control Panel alarms setting and the Jigsaw puzzle (and,
of course, I don't have a start-up chime). AFAIK, the volume settings are
all on and up to max.

Thanks again for the help!

Ciao,

Richard

Re: weird problem with Powerbook 520

2001-10-17 Thread Richard Adams

Speaking of upgrades, isn't it true that you can upgrade a Duo280C to
PowerPC? Anybody know what the procedure is, and where to get the upgrade?

Also, I assumed from my lack of sound that there's probably a minor hardware
problem (I'm betting a simple broken or disconnected wire) in my Duo. I took
the screws out, but didn't feel like messing with trying to force the unit
apart without being sure what I was doing. Can anybody tell me how to best
get at this thing's innards?

Ciao,

Richard

Re: Shameless site promotion

2001-10-05 Thread Richard Adams

I'm probably your 'polar opposite' to some degree, Dan, I use W-Intel
machines most of the time, and am just learning the Mac, but I've never much
believed in bashing OS's: They all have their weaknesses and strengths
according to what you're using them for, IMHO.

If you need any assistance with any aspect of this, feel free to call on me.
I've always enjoyed the challenge of trying to squeeze performance out of
older machines.

Best regards,

Richard

Re: REA program

I keep seeing references to the REA program, which seems to be some kind of
repair/return program, I gather. What are the details, and is a Duo 280C
still eligible? I just bought a 280C off E-Bay, but it doesn't seem to have
