[RCSE] RE: RCSE] Soprano Feedback

2005-06-10 Thread Regis White
Jim, you really need feedback from someone whom has logged time on both.
I have not. I did buy Mark Miller’s “prototype” Soprano. I only have
a few launches on it but understand why the rudder was increased on
current offerings. Since I have seen no better responses I offer the
following thoughts - mainly for those with out a lot of experience.
Without any good support for my thoughts – FWIW J - I think if you have
full house experience, you will find the Soprano both a good floater and
penetrator. I suspect the AVA my be a better floater (lighter) but may
not penetrate as will as the Soprano (just my guess). For a flyer not
experienced with modern high performance soarers, the Ava (or Topaz) may
be the choice. That should not be seen as criticism of the Soprano but
a suggestion that it flys like a modern high performance ship. If you
are new to this sport (especially if you have limited funds) skip
expensive planes like the Soprano and Ava (untill you have wiped out a
few cheaper planes – they are available). Not because they would be
more difficult to learn on; because things do happen (and will) – ask
Gordy. The only criticism I have is not with the planes (and certainly
not with Kennedy or Miller) but with the designer/makers that do not
make parts that are interchangeable. Let me explain: After receiving
the Soprano and admiring it, I heard about the Trio and Piper
http://www.isthmusmodels.com/ and thought I could buy one of them and
be able to swap wings with the Soprano. Sorry – too logical! Now
before any one takes this too seriously (and takes me to task),
understand these thoughts are just that – not fighting words. The
wonderful thing about this sport is all the choices - and they are
mostly all good. Regis

Ok, so who's flying a Soprano out there? Let's hear some feedback! I
would like a big RES plane and am trying to decide between Soprano and
AVA.

Cheers - Jim Laurel

RE: [RCSE] Battery food-Charger

2004-11-11 Thread Regis White
Efficient cells like the KAN's do not induce a voltage depression
adequate enough to trip the peak-detect, so the charger keeps pumping in
the current.

That explains why the packs got hot.

The above applies to NiMH cells used for normal(?) operation, as
opposed to
propulsion applications (F5B, etc).

So, is there a truly automatic charger for Efficient NiMH cells?

Since the A4 was released, the charge protocol for NiMH has changed
significantly to better represent the characteristics of the cell
chemistry. If
memory serves (I owned one, then ditched it) only the peak overvoltage
was
dropped by a few mV as compared to the NiCD algorythm.

The current accepted regime for NiMH is similar to:

Stage 1:
Charger algorythm applies a zero (slope) delta, essentially turns off
the
charge phase as soon as the fully charged state is reached (based on a V
value,
no overcharge above rated V). This brings the cell to ~80-90% of rated
capacity
(this value will decrease the more current pushed into the cell, as the
rated V
is reached sooner with an elevated charge V)
Stage 2:
Same charge current (or another lesser rate) is pulsed (duty cycle) to
bring
the cell 95% of rated
Stage 3:
Maintenance rate - same charge current (or another lesser value) is
pulsed
(shorter duty cycle) to maintain a fully charged state.

The above applies to NiMH cells used for normal(?) operation, as opposed
to
propulsion applications (F5B, etc).

Quoting Cameron [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

To quote Litco Systems directly from their manual for the Alpha 4
charger:

PLEASE NOTE: ALL DEVICES ON A-4 EXCEPT W DEVICE ARE INTENDED FOR
NI-CADS.
ONLY V AND W DEVICES MAY BE USED WITH WET AND GEL CELLS (LEAD-ACID
BATTERIES). ALL DEVICES EXCEPT A,S W ARE SUITABLE FOR NIMH
BATTERIES
(NICKEL-METAL-HYDRIDE). TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE USE ONLY I AND C

That's the probelm with employing a NiCD charger that peak-detects for
NiCD
instead of NiMH. NiMH are endomthermic, while NiCD technology is
exothermic.

This means as an NiCD becomes fully charged, the increase in heat
causes an
increase in internal resistance, which lowers the charge V, which
trips the
 peak-detect circuitry.

Efficient cells like the KAN's do not induce a voltage depression
adequate
enough to trip the peak-detect, so the charger keeps pumping in the
current.

NiCD chargers are great at ruining perfectly good NiMH cells. Then the
cells

 get blamed for poor performance...

Re: [RCSE] Battery food-Charger

2004-11-09 Thread Regis White

I bought an Alpha 4 about six or seven years ago and have been quite
happy with it. But (there is always a but) it did not have a
separate discharge function – it only cycled (once). NiCads like to
be left discharged I have been led to believe. Ni-MH on the other
hand like to be fully charged – and can be harmed if fully
discharged. So I have replaced most of my NiCads. What I learned
was that I could not safely charge them on the Alpha 4 'Peak'
function or even the 'c/10' function – only the 'Fast charge'
function. Recently I acquired two KAN Ni-MH 7 cell packs and was
surprised to find that the Alpha 4 could not automatic charge them
safely – they got very hot. Since both packs got very hot, I suspect
the KAN cells are just not compatible with Alpha 4 technology (which
is easily 20 years old). (I mean we can plug in a cell phone to
charge and just forget it.) Is there something about the KAN type
cells that are different or is this an anomaly? Regis

Bill,I hope you are not a troll. As long as there are contests there
is
going to be controversy(sp?). And not just in the RC arena. When I
used to
race Hobie 16s back in the 80s there were some serious disagreements
that
would escalate beyond just verbal at times, especially at the usual
Saturday
night barbecue and beer fest between race days. I have seen guys put
their
boats in irons and jump overboard to discuss a foul- especially when
wind
is light and you are trying to make the most out of every little puff. I
suspect contests of any kind tend to draw some people who have perhaps a
more agressive and competitive nature and as a result some arguments are
bound to happen. Contests are good for those who like them, just as
going
out on a Sunday to fly with no particular goal in mind is also a good
thing.
I guess if you dont like the competitive enviornment, you certainly have
a
right to not compete,
but I dont think those that do should be judged as silly. As a matter
of
fact I kind of like the arguments that take place on the exchange/at
contests, etc- kinds of livens things up a bit!

Why not mount the servo to the servo cover. This

Yes, the Sting has to have the servo arm pointing up

 inside of the bottom skin.
The servo is installed from the bottom and the
 fairing is molded in the
wing. To space the servo off the skin a slow cure
 epoxy and silica / micro

 hot it gets before you
 boil the wing skin.
After it is cured take a dremel tool with a router
 base, tape off the wing
skin to avoid scratches and route the depth required
 for your servo. Then
epoxy it in as usual. If you don’t have the router
 base then make a dummy
servo from wood (the same thickness as the real

skin and as large as the servo opening will allow)
 and attach a oversized
flat plate to the side that when pressed against the
 bottom skin will give
you the required depth needed. Wax it up good and do
 the squish.
It is a extra step and it’s not that hard to do. The
 Stings performance is
 worth it.
You can also shim it with hard balsa and a thin
 plywood plate on top.

two 10-32 nylon bolts in the center. Thread into captive nylon nuts.

the holding strength for various sized nylon screws? Any hard data out

We use 6-32 screws for HLG. What is the appropriate size and number on
nylon screws for hard launching a composite 2M??

Thanks,

First let me say that the RCSD publisher has the right to keep costs as
low as possible. That said I would like to correct a misconception.
I accept credit cards in my business and the discount rate (what the
CC co charges the merchant) is averages around 2.6%. On $30.00 that
would be $.78 per subscription. If one could add another 50 subscribers
by accepting a credit card it would make sense just to charge the credit
card users another buck. However, then one has created a paper trail
that the IRS can examine.

RE: [RCSE] Plane Recommendations

2001-07-12 Thread Regis White

I have to agree with all. I have been teaching new fliers with electrics,
like the Graupner Bussard and the Teddy (you have to throttle back and trim
the teddy just right - but that's true with them all). I have also found
that the Pico Stick works very well too. Can't stall it, flies very slow,
is relatively hearty and can be flown in a limited area. You will need
ideal weather though (very little or no wind) - which I find most evenings
in S. Md. Regis

Gently Lady weighs more like 26 oz.
I admit there's a lot to be said for a bounceable airplane
but I think that's for learning landings.

There's another issue with interested watcher models, being
able to handle hi-g forces from an inexperience flyer. I'd be
worried about bad control inputs folding a wing on most floater
type models. If it's going to be a built up, get one with a
strong spar and/or leading edge sheeting on both top and
bottom of wing.

Polyhedrals setup with both positive pitch and roll stability
are nice, since it takes near deliberate control inputs to get
them to continuously lose altitude for any length of time.

I have an electric rc-dymond flipper, a small 27 ounce 58 inch
wingspan model (light considering 10.5 ounces of this is
battery pack [7 1400AE cells] and motor), a very strong 3
piece wing (sheeted on top and bottom). With limited control
throws, this model is almost indestructable as long as it's
in the air, so I'll let just about anyone fly it as long
as it has some altitude. I also mention if they get in trouble
to just let go of the stick, since it's very stable.

Charles, I understand your reasoning. However, the CASA 2M only pulled
three entries in RES. Would there have been more if allowed? I do not
know, but I am sure it is discouraging to have an event and no (few)
entries. BTW, you (CASA, Skip and Frank Thompson) put on a great contest
(it is a shame it did not draw more RES entries). If there are enough
entries, perhaps two levels as CASA had for 2M. It also occurs to me that
some RES 'experts' planning on the NATS would like a contest for tune up. I
noticed that RES gets a (relatively) large entry at the NATS. Regis

While driving through the Arizona desert the glasses began sliding across

window to grab them just as the JATO rocket I had strapped to the roof of my
car missfired. I was thrown clear by the thrust from the rocket and landed
in the sand on the side of the road. The car ended up going so fast it
embeded in the side of a cliff 85' up. I was ok, but the glasses were never
recovered. With the JATO rocket gone I had to use a chevy 350 to power my

RE: [RCSE] Channel 20 (was Carbon Fiber interference)

2001-03-13 Thread Regis White

Depends on the Transmitter make and model. They all can be changed by their
US importer service center. Most Tx use a module that is replaceable. Not
all areas have the Ch 20 problem and you may be able to use it but not in
you current location - so, if you can afford it, get another module on a
different channel. Just need to change the crystal in the 555 (to
corresponding ch). But if your Tx does not use a module, if it is new, take
it back to hobby shop (if you bought locally - they should not have sold you
that channel - and should exchange it for you). Or send it back to service
center (Jr to Horizon Hobbies etc.) to get it changed. But if you picked it
up at a swap meet, and it has a module, you can sell the module. Most of
the members of this list have multiple modules (and multiple Txs as well).
As I said before, interference on channel 20 is dependent on proximity to
certain TV transmitters and is not a problem for most of the country. Just
do not pawn it off on someone in your area. Regis

Minority or not - much criticism has been posted about the JR 610. Then I
got an email from a list member that said he had an early 610 that worked
perfectly. Now I surmise that the design WAS proven before marketed. Some
of the post on this list would have suggested otherwise. Something must
have gone wrong AFTER the original design and manufacture (first release) -
(Possibly as a cost saving effort). Just a guess on my part. Since I have

RE: [RCSE] porpoising solutions???

2001-02-18 Thread Regis White

My experience has been that most FF models (this includes R/C sailplanes)
are designed with too much decalage. I think the theory is: "better safe
than sorry" - you can survive too much - not so too little. Or, maybe: "if
a little is good, more is better." Flying stabs eliminates the problem.

Dave writes:

I just took a close look at my LB2 and it looks like I definitely
 have some
'up' where I mounted the tail.

Actually you do have to have SOME 'up', as you call it. That 'up' that you
see IS the decalage angle. And SOME decalage is a fundamental requirement of
ANY conventional glider, in fact that is the most basic purpose of having
the horizontal tailplane: to keep the wing from diving (also can be thought
of as: to keep the wing at some useful angle of attack). On all but the most
carefully designed flying wing foils, a foil (your wing) producing lift also
produces positive pitching moment, meaning the leading edge of the foil
wants to go DOWN. Release any conventional glider without its horiz. stab
attached and you will see this effect IMMEDIATELY,(don't actually try this,
just trust me). A stab mounted at a NEUTRAL angle will give some very
temporary relief to this problem, but until that stab is ACTIVELY holding
the rear of the fuselage down by having it's trailing edge higher than its
leading edge relative to the airflow, your glider is gonna dive bigtime. If
it's mounted with too MUCH angle (Stab t.e. high) then your glider is going
to constantly repeat one mild stall after another (porpoising). The trick is
to have the RIGHT amount of this angle. Too much and you porpoise, Too
little and you dive. Either problem can be crudely corrected by shoving
weight all over the place and trimming the elevator like mad, but these are
fundamentally bad solutions because they add, well, weight and drag, not to
mention their effect on maneuverability.

How do you correct this w/o destroying the tail given the whole thing is
balsa? I guess I could try to cut the tail off.

I am not familiar with the exact construction details of the LB2, but it
MIGHT be helpful, depending on how it's put together, to remember that you
can change the angle of the tailplane OR the angle of the wing. Is the wing
mounted in such a way as to be shim-able in it's mount? If so, shim the rear
of the wing up a bit and test (this will have the same effect as bringing
the t.e. of the stab down. Remember, it's the relative angle BETWEEN these
two surfaces that counts). Shimming the wing is actually a great way to
experiment, if it is doable on your plane, because it's much more changeable
than rebuilding your tail six times to get things just right. Good luck.

Must be a GPS thing but I am getting private email saying I shouldn't
mention a rule number without quoting the rule. It didn't know that
anyone would enter a contest without knowing the rules, but here goes:

10.1.e Right-of-Way Rule. A sailplane attached to the launch equipment

over sailplanes in flight. ...

I would pasted in the remediation portion if the AMA had not locked

expect box to pack the thing. Although I've done it this way before, it's a
pain. I'm thinking about doing it as a carry on. Can I put it in the
overhead without it being crushed? Will I be able to walk on board without
being shot as a terrorist? Any suggestions from those that have traveled

I can answer this! And I'm a total newbie! You can effectively use a
computer radio on your first flight! A computer radio isn't just for making
your flaps extend when your zipper drops, it makes installation, set-up,
and learning much easier. You don't have to mess with making sure the
servos are connected the right way, since you can electronically flip any
servo. You don't have to worry about excessive throws, because you set
those in the radio. And best of all, when you first start, you set the
throws really low and use 50 to 100% exponential to make your flying easy.
As you progress with that same model you bring down the exponential and
bring up the throws. It's WONDERFUL!

RE: [RCSE] Original Crystal Question

I think the answer here is that JR (probably from complaints) believes their
(JR) receivers on channels 11 - 14 are 'at risk' from FM channel 56 - 60 Txs
(any make). Thus they have stopped supplying the Rx crystals - channels
11 - 14. Question: Do they sell TX modules for channels 11 - 14? Probably
no more. I do have both (JR Module and JR Rx) on channel 12. It (Rx) has
not been tested 'under fire'. since I have owned it. I have 'contested' the
JR Tx (Ch 12) using both RCD 555 and FMA receivers with no sign of
interference (as expected). Regis

Yes, I was flying a Graupner Bussard and one of the two nylon hold down
bolts broke. Plane spiraled in. Broke one blade and minor dent in one
wing. The other bolt held (even with the extra stress) so I think the one
that broke was flawed. They were surprisingly small to begin with (metric
4x20) but that was what plans called for (and as supplied). Regis

A buddy of mine took his Opus V into the ground pretty
hard while DS'ing. The fuse is ok but the wing spar
broke out through the wing skin.

Since the Opus has a metal wing bolt, it had no chance
to break first and save the wing. It seems like
having a nylon bolt would have prevented the damage
(of course, at the expense of structural strength).
Has anyone ever heard of a nylon wing bolt breaking in
the air?

Thanks in advance.

glider-guiders shows up with a 2 meter or open ship and we all enjoy
sharing tales. The IC field is about 8 miles or so from where we fly
sailplanes. I often wander by the IC field with an electric whatever.
Always warmly welcomed. Lately some of the IC fliers have been showing
up to watch us fly at the sailplane site. We've got a great bunch of
guys out here. I for one really appreciate it.

OBTW: At the NWSS regional tournament in early September this year,
during lunch break we had a demo of an electric plane, (SWAG F3B???)
All I know is it went like a raped-ape and was piloted by someone who
really knew what he was doing (placed internationally at some major
event) We all Ooo'ed and Ahhh'ed. Electrics are often seen at
sailplane sites.

We have a great bunch of guys out here. No, wait, I said that already.
;-)

OK, back to the ranting.

Greetings again!
There was good response to this:
 Dennis Phelan wrote:

 Do anything??

Of course I knew there were few RTF or even ARF in this class and I
knew it wouldn't do or be everything. I left it open to hear from you
guys.

Here's how you stood:
2 fliers were very pro towards the Picojet Combat
2 fliers were very anti PJCombat
3 fliers were very pro Zagi 400
2 fliers liked both for their goods and bads.

It's still a difficult decision for me. I really only wanted a plane
to take on a camping vacation where the chance of good sloping has
always been poor but where there are places to fly. It seems the
hours needed to put together a Zagi are not a negative, especially if
you're going to power it with a hot 400/400BB/480 and lots of cells,
this is true for PJCombat also. Motor makes a big difference here,
and I wonder how many PJCombat owners would like their plane if it
had a better motor/battery combo?

I'm still open but beginning to think that I should get both. That
would mean that one would be ready for sure and in the future, I
would always have a plane for "anything". Ya, ya I'm still not
covering everything.

RE: [RCSE] Low-end computer radio

2000-09-18 Thread regis white

I respectfully disagree. Most of the many (perhaps most) of the members of
this list are contest oriented RC modelers. Most RC modelers, however, are
fun flyers and not contest oriented. That is why most owners of RC
equipment have never used more than four servos (or any option requiring
more than four channels). Yes you may grow into it - better chance that you
may also lose interest and not. If you become a rabid RC modeler (like many
on this list), you will not be satisfied with only one radio. (My guess is
that most members of this list have more than two radios.) So that is why I
would not encourage any one new to the hobby to go high end. Regis

Hello,

I have a Futaba 6XAS and it will allow you to setup a full plane. I have
set it up on my Javelin so I can practice with it.

What it doesn't have is the mixing control the more advanced radio's have
with all the extras. Now you may say, well I don't need that stuff, I just
need the basic setup to practice. That is a false assumption. I have just
bought a Futaba 8UAF so I can have all the mixing options for a HLG or Full
House setup plane. You see, having these extra options allows you to create
a plane that is in the end, easier to fly.

You see, if you buy a 6 channel radio and you like flying a full house
plane, then you will quickly appreciate the advanced options a better Tx
presents. Then you will want to go out and buy that one and in the end
spend more money. I would rather grow into an item, than out of it.

Futaba doesn't make a 4ch computer radio...only 6 channels and up. The
Hitec Flash 4x and 5x are the best bang for the buck for a
compuer radio, and the servos and receivers are compatible with Futaba.

That said, the I don't believe that the Flash 5x can do complex mixing for a
full-house plane, such as crow, aileron-flap mixing
(not flaperon), and full span trailing edge camber/mixing. I'm not even
sure that the 6 channel Futaba can do that.

the popular categorization of U.S. of A. citizens is 'american'. But why?

I've been watching this thread with growing disinterest over the last few
days, and all I can say is that I'm glad there are as many idiots in America
as there are here in Canada; it wouldn't be fair if we got the lion's share,
now would it?

Here in Canada we have MAAC, which is very much the the Canadian version of
the AMA. For years I thought, in good company, that MAAC was created simply
to suck up enough money each year so that I had one less sailplane in the
air, that club executives were only composed of people who got a kick out of
making up rules, and that CD's were out to ensure that everyone had as
little fun at contests as possible. Now, I never vocalized these feelings
(as some on this list seem to have little trouble doing), but I had them
nonetheless.

After serving a few years on the executive's of a few clubs, however, I
began to see the immense amounts of effort that go into governing the
actions of modelers in this day and age. Although people are always able to
point out things that are wrong, few ever have anything constructive to add
once the bitching is done.

At the heart of any organisation there is always a small group of people who
are willing to drag the winches out every weekend, whether they want to or
not, or who are willing to hunt down a corporate sponsor so guys can have a
barbeque after a major contest. How many people do you know that suddenly
"have plans" on field clean-up day?

People are quick to forget that almost everyone, from club president to MAAC
zone rep to joe-average flyer, is in this hobby AS A HOBBY. People VOLUNTEER
to put up websites and CD contests last time I checked. This was supposed to
be RELAXING and ENJOYABLE, so maybe things don't turn out perfectly every
time. Welcome to real life.

So, I put forth this suggestion to our interpid exchange. As criticizm and
conflict are for the most part constructive, feel free to post your woes and
concerns for all to see. But earn that right by posting solutions as well,
not just insults and rants; that doesn't do anyone any good. Serve a year on
your club executive, help to organize a nationwide fun-fly, and then I'll
listen with more interest when you start bitching again ;)

Oh, from what I've heard, I'm a "yea" too.

Cheers,
Adam

Let me add another vote to the "Yea" side. I appreciate that you shared
these photos with us.

To the nay-sayers, I say stuff it, and unless you can do better, shut up.

I have received over 10 personal
emails now telling me that my pictures or my web page suck, that photos
don't have the right stuff in them, don't have the right lighting, are the
wrong DPI, are the wrong size (either too small or too big), they weren't
up quick enough, too slow to load, what ever...

The biggest problem, as I see it, is the lack of a standard. (Blame

you will be a long time waiting for one.) I personally feel email is a
poor means of communicating (plain text is cold and impersonal). HTML
offers some means of expression at least. Now, since I have deleted the
previous string to save band width (and do my part for the environment),
nobody reading this will have any idea what I am talking (in plain text)
about. :-) Hmm, are smiley faces allowed on lists?

Ok, everybody, give these guys a break. It's a tough job to answer all the

easy to contact a vendor and ask a question - and often without thought as
to what was really asked or how difficult the answer might be. And although
there are many 'standard questions', there are many more that require
individual answers. Each unique question might take two lines or two pages
to properly answer. Think about this. If you received two hundred emails a
day and could read and answer each one in two minutes, that's 400 minutes or
over six hours a day. Can you understand why the answers become short
and/or the responder sounds a little rushed or irritated?

Now as to product complaints. I have been on the receiving end of calls
that were anything but polite while blaming the design and materials of a
kit for a failure. Closer inspection of parts revealed things like: spars
'spliced' with butt joints; wings which required struts assembled without
the hard points so it was obvious no struts had ever been used; covering put
on with the backing still on; kits extensively modified by a person
obviously lacking in structural or aeronautical expertise; .90 sized engines
on airframes designed for a .40. The list is endless because nothing is
foolproof - and fools are often particularly ingenious in expressing their
foolishness.

Product availability is another issue entirely. Most of these companies
depend on other companies for their products. Many of the suppliers are
across the big water and can not, will not or are not able to supply what's
needed when it's needed. As the demand for prefabricated (much nicer than
ARF) products grows so do the delivery problems. Consider this: if the DEA
decides your container load of product might have drugs in it they; one,
drill holes and take samples; or two, empty the container onto the dock and
open the boxes; or three the dockworker spears the boxes with a fork truck.
Each action delays the delivery and frequently ruins the contents. Sure,
you generally get your money back, but in the meantime you have no product,
you don't know where it is and you don't know when you're going to get it.

How about the way a customer uses your product. Naah, you get the idea.

It becomes VERY difficult to stay civil when you receive nothing but
complaints, because very few people ever express their thanks for the things
that are done well.

Ask intelligent questions.
Be patient, you are not the only customer.
The best price does not always generate the best outcome.
Don't call first thing Monday complaining about Sundays crash, think first.
Don't call Friday for something you want/need Saturday.
Expect that things not available today might not get in until at least
tomorrow. 8)
If you get lost in the shuffle, try again. It probably was unintentional.
Remember how many people may or may not work for the company in question.

When was the last time you went a year, a week, a day without making a
mistake?

Rick,

The Space Shuttle glides in from space with swept back wings. Though at
a high speed and a high angle of attack.
