Hi folks - I am back from Turkey and it was a great event. The senior team
did well despite some plane difficulties and the juniors were terrific
taking home the team silver medal and the 2nd and 3rd place in the world.

I will be spending several evenings tearing up tickets for the drawing. If
you want in, you need to get your orders in now.

I still have a pretty large stock of tee shirts that we will be selling with
free shipping. We will only be shipping out items that we have in stock. We
are out of the polo's and will not have any more. We don't have a magic
real-time inventory system, so ff you order something and it is out of
stock, I will refund your complete payment.

The website will be closed for further ordering at 5:00 MDT on July 11th.

Thanks for all of your support. The team and I really appreciated the cheers
of support, the donations, and the merchandise purchases. YOU make it
possible for us to be successful!

Thanks again.

Jim

Thanks to everyone for your support. I have decided to not close the F3J
merchandise website this Friday as planned. We are making great progress on
the goal and are currently about $1500 from our initial budget. Our last
uncontrollable expense will be excess baggage charges for our models for the
trip to Turkey. I had budgeted a substantial increase from the previous
cycle, but the outlook of hitting that number is looking glum. Last cycle
only a few pilots got dinged with excess baggage and they were only in the
$75-$125 range. This year we have one more pilot and the excess baggage
situation looks pretty grim. We have heard of the possibility of charges as
high as $500 each way for our model boxes. What actually happens at the
airports is really up to the gate agents and skycaps. We are hoping for
some mercy, but need to be prepared for the worst.

As a result I am keeping the merchandise site open though our return when we
will have the final numbers for our expenses.

It feels like a small miracle to be as close to the goal as we are and we
want to thank everyone that has supported us, and there are too many to name
individually, but between the donors listed on the website and each and
everyone that has purchased raffle tickets or merchandise, we are eternally
grateful!

If you have not purchased any tickets or merchandise, we would still
appreciate your support. And should be overachieve, any remaining funds
will be placed in the team fund for the benefit of the next cycle.

Tickets and merchandise can be purchased at: http://www.usf3jteam.com

Thanks a bunch.

Hello all,

This Sunday I am holding a 60 F3J contest at Dayton Ohio. All flights will
be off of mini Hi-Starts, so it's time to bring out that old javelin H/L to
fly again! The contest will be in an F3J rules type MoM format. So dust off
that old H/L, put a hook on it and come join the fun. The contest will start
around 11, I will be there around 9 so that you can trim out your plane on
the Hi-Starts.

RE: [RCSE] JR 9303 Flap Programming Question

2008-03-09 Thread Tom Copp
OK to set the Trailing edge in flight modes all you do is switch to the FM
you want and push the little trimmers on the top face of the 9303 the
direction you want the ailerons and flaps to go in that FM. These are the
ones on either side of the JR logo. That's all there is to it. Once you
switch back to Cruse mode the TE will return.

My problem is that I try adjusting the flaps in the flap rates and
camber mix menus, but I don't see any change in the flaps as I move
the various switches for the various flight modes. I'm trying to
program a Berg 4l, berg 7 channel, and a jr700 rx. Is there something
that I'm missing? I've tried to program this like I would my JR 6102,
but this is an entirely different beast.

RE: [RCSE] Fuselage Mold Making Supplies / Advise

2008-02-24 Thread Tom Copp
If you want to make a professional mold easily try this;

1. Your master is perfect.
2. Your master has a hard finish like catalyzed polyester paint or urethane
and a high polish.
3. Make a splitter board. Add locating balls or pins and bushings to the
flange.
4. Make a Steel frame of 1 X 2 welded around the perimeter of the plug
offset by 2.00
5. Use a good carnauba release wax, wax and buff. Let cure and repeat 4x.
6. Use Epoxy gelcoat. Add about .025 thick and even coverage. Apply with a
1/2 brush and start from one end always keeping a wet edge.
7. Mix thick (like mayonnaise) slurry of epoxy and milled fibers and attach
the clean, sanded frame to the gelcoat.
8. Now the fun part. Mix a slow cure epoxy laminating resin with clean white
sand. The kind used in ash trays. You can buy at the tile store. Mix the
slurry until you can't add any more sand to solution.
9. Pack the sand over the gel coat while the gel coat leaves a finger print
but does not come off to your finger. Pack a mix about 1.5 thick.
10. Let cure for 2 days and flip over and repeat the process.

The mold is only as good as the master; the edge and parting line are only
as good as the splitter. Take your time on the master and splitter. It pays
off in the end 100 fold.

It will take less than a gallon of resin to make a 55” glider fuselage mold.

US Composites seams easy to buy from. I haven’t shopped there so I don’t
know first hand.

Out West we:
Can sand bumps but keep them visible. Haven't noticed any improvement in
flight.
LE with tape is OK. Taps as a single layer and not 100 plies for changing
the airfoil.
Stock Control size only.
Carbon spar OK
Move Tow hook.

We normalize the carbon spar by using a light zip start so no winch wars and
a stock EZ launches as well as a modified EZ on these. If you winch the
Carbon spar is the ticket.

David,

Launching without turning the transmitter on is a symptom of a greater
problem. You must build a routine that you consistently follow each and
every time you launch, otherwise you will make this and a bunch of other
mistakes.

Most of the problems occur if you let yourself be rushed, either by
external circumstances, or by a desire to join the gaggle in the monster
thermal just off the launch.

There are so many ways launches can go wrong that your proposed device
may save you from one problem, but the others will be sure to bite you
instead.

As a reformed sinner myself I speak from bitter experience.

David Webb wrote:
Gentlemen, I would like your feedback on something I created last
season in a bit of a whim. I have been competing at various TD tasks
in the Northwest over the last 3 years. Over this time I have
witnessed far too many launches where the pilot after the fact
admitted that he/she did not turn on the aircraft. Needless to say
most of the aircraft were lost or seriously damaged. So in search of a
solution I went to a local electronics shop and asked a young guy if
he could give me a hand designing a safety component that might help
 avoid this scenario.

Basically we designed a switch with a small tilt sensor and some
latching circuitry. The result is this:

If you remember to turn on the plane the switch works as expected. The
plane powers on and off as it would normally.

If you turn OFF the plane and tilt the aircraft in the desired launch
angle ( this is set by the pilot) the plane turns ITSELF on and stays
on until the circuit is reset by disconnecting / interrupting the
battery. The draw is tiny and the circuit and switch itself 1xx .25
or double the size of a typical 20 amp RC switch. I have tested the
product in the lab and i know a shop that could likely get the size
down to half its current size or close to the size of a standard
 switch

This would of course cost some money out of pocket but I am not sure
if the target market is too limited to bother creating this solution
for. For the most part, the elite pilots I watch either don't even use
a switch or are very disciplined in their launch methodology. The
target market is more appropriately general pilots who may be
approaching the more senior years as well as new pilots.

What do you think people? At your local club have you seen anyone toss
an un-powered glider to its death? Would a product like this be of
value as a replacement for the standard on off switch for your more
senior members or new eager soaring enthusiasts?

RE: [RCSE] Contest Format

2008-01-11 Thread Tom Copp
Wow lots of stuff here.

In general contests outside the USA are well attended. Contests attendance
inside the USA is diminishing. Why?

Outside the USA they typically fly F3J or a local version of F3J with F3B
winches that the pilots supply btw. They are strict about being on the line
in time; they don't soften the task for anyone. They play hardball over
there and their attendance is thriving.

Inside the USA most of our formats are the same since the late 70's while
our models have evolved over the last 30+ years the contests have not. Our
attendance is shrinking, we give in to a sandbagger, and we don't want to
change anything to keep the pilots we have coming back. We don't push
ourselves to try anything new and learn something. Sure the new guy has lots
to learn starting from zero but after 6 months what is next? Guys soaring is
not difficult.
How many of us are significantly better pilots after the first 2 or 3 years?
What have you learned the last 3 years? We quit flying if the conditions get
a little rough. You can choose your issue all day long as why we get board
or why attendance is shrinking.

BTW, Each and every contest I have been to is a social event! That's the
nature of humans. We tend to have fun when we can. I would say lets play a
little hardball and push our skills a bit and move up a peg. The USA was at
one time a soaring leader we sure can't say that anymore.

Yes, I see the same thing too. The Europeans make F3J and F3B the F1 of
soaring and because they do they bring in the new guys.

You will get your butt kicked when you start out and what do they do to help
you? Nothing.its sink or swim. The best teacher I ever had was a good ass
kicking! Getting old? Can't see? Tough, move over old man there are 50 new
guys waiting to replace you.

No one is complaining about buying a winch or model and in many cases it's
more difficult over there to come up with Toy Money plus the cost to
travel to a comp is expensive. Yes sure Europe is small but have you ever
drove from Spain/France to Germany? Shoot the toll fees will exceed the cost
of fuel (at 8.00+ a gallon!) yet contests are full and the parties are well
worth the effort.

The USA TD contest pilots are dieing. I mean literally dieing (RIP) no new
blood. The writing has been on the wall for years.. Its time to read the
wall.

rear of the CF cap that holds the wing attachment nuts came loose. I
applied a generous amount of epoxy, but that repair did not solve the
problem. On a landing yesterday, the entire wing with the hold down bolts
popped from the fuse. Fortunately the landing had been completed and
there was no additional damage.

RE: [RCSE] Epoxied servo techniques

2006-03-02 Thread Tom Copp
This is easy, do a test. Find an old servo with a clean case. Mix up some 5
minute and micro about like mayonnaise. Put about a quarter size blob on the
servo case side and squish it to a piece of smooth clean 1/4 plywood and you
want to push down so the servo contacts the wing but not forces the wing
flat in one area, push down so the epoxy just rolls out all sides about
1/16. If you put too much then you get more roll out. So push down and get
the squeeze out and then just hold light pressure until it cures. Now
about 2 hours later try and pull it out.

Now sand the servo case with 150 grit, clean and repeat the test.

The un-sanded servo will hold well for most guys and easily come out in a
hard landing or when you want it to. The sanded servo will stay put in a
hard landing but still come out when you want it to but will take a little
more force.

Also add some 8oz glass or carbon to the wing skin to stiffen the servo area
if it has not been already done for you before you epoxy in servos.

comments here there seem to be a huge variance in techniques when
going for the glue-in approach. I have only seen two variations where
the servo is glued in using a bed of epoxy and micro balloons and is
either bare or wrapped in masking tape. But some people are describing
servos that pop out of the epoxy easily and others are describing
needing to grind the servos out.
Can those who have had really good luck with gluing there servos in
provide some insights?
Thanks for all the information,
Corey

RE: [RCSE] Gluing Servos v.s. Servo Frames

2006-03-01 Thread Tom Copp
I epoxy all my wing servos in but I do sand the case w/150 grit to get a
bite on the case, I never use tape or heat shrink over the servo, just sand
to a dull finish and spooge in. There are many photos of the spooge in
instillation on my site www.f3x.com in the how to build section. Use good
servos and land with your flaps up and they will not need fixing!
If at a contest you did need to fix one they go right back in the custom
molded spooge pocket with a finger wipe of 5 minute or a squirt of thick CA.
Usually no re-trimming needed.

Subject: Re: [RCSE] Gluing Servos v.s. Servo Frames

These frames weigh
next to nothing and can be glued into the wing with
medium or black CA.

I think I'll just start taping a 1/2 ounce of lead to
every servo for absolutely no reason... ;-) I enjoyed
that thread of a few weeks ago where the engineer,
don't know his name, talked about getting all the
unnecessary weight out of his model. I'm pretty much
the same way, without getting nuts about it.

I put my servos in with a mixture of 5 minute and
micro-balloons (Peanut butter thick mixture). I do not
prepare the servo by sanding it or cleaning so it will
stick to the epoxy mixture. They pop right out if need
be. And there is a little pocket remaining to drop
the next servo right in. Of course you can wrap the
servo in masking tape, saran wrap, or even put mold
release on it... In my Insanity, (a bagged wing POS),
I did have Dave Hauch put a false bottom of ply into
the servo hole, since the Airtronics new wing servos
have little mounting lugs... but even as many times as
I've slammed that thing into the ground, never had to
change a servo. So I won't mess with that in the next
one.

I realize the anal retentives in the group need the
install to be pretty. After the servo covers go on...
who can see it?

My main question remains... what are you guys doing to
destroy your servos? Instead of bullding all of this
unnecessary crap into your airplanes, why not learn to
NOT break the darn things???

Just thinkin' out loud...

FedEx Express is better at paying than FedEx Ground. They are really
different companies.

Check this out. DHL broke a shipment of mine and called me because they
wanted to pay only the wholesale cost of the model even though I insured it
for invoice value. What's up with that? I told them I was factory direct to
the customer and had no resellers in the USA. After a long wait and fight
they finally paid the insured amount.well almost the insured amount they
deducted the shipping and handling fees so now I am out 2x shipping costs to
the customer.

Every shipping company has horror stories!

My understanding is that FedEx will not honor an insurance claim if the item
damaged during transit is a model airplane. I found that out when I
initiated a claim with FedEx when a molded R/C sailplane was received
damaged from a vendor. Fortunately my credit card company sided with me and
I got a chargeback until the vendor made good on the damage.

RE: [RCSE] RE: ??? (Digital SLR)

2005-12-20 Thread Tom Copp
I have a FZ5 also like I posted earlier and LOVE it. It is almost as fast as
a DSLR shot to shot. If the new FZ30 was out when I bought my FZ5 I might
have got that instead because the zoom control is like a DSLR mounted on the
lens, it also has all manual controls if you like that option.

Point shoots are very cool because they are 1-piece = no dust in the
camera or on the sensor and you can get a quality fast F2.8 lens and VR
(Vibration Reduction) at a low price with a PS but the real world problem
for me is speed from shot to shot like we do in RC action shots. If that
bugs you either get a DSLR or a Panasonic FZ5 or FZ30 or the Fuji S7000, or
Canon's S2 IS. There are so many out there. Look at
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs.asp and read the timing specs for the
camera you're interested in and pay attention to the shot to shot specs.
Anything over 2 seconds feels like a lifetime and most PS are that and
longer.

Btw. If you are shooting for web or email or print 4x6 to 8x10 max buying
extra MP's won't matter. Anything over 4mp is overkill especially of you buy
a camera with a good lens.

good, and a few a extremely challenging shots to take well:

RE: [RCSE] ???

2005-12-16 Thread Tom Copp
That can be as wide open.

My choices are:
DSLR:
Nikon D50 or Canon XT350. Basically the same features at basically the same
cost. If you already have either Canon or Nikon AF lens then stay with that
system. 1000.00 with a -200mm lens added.

For Point and shoot or all in one I have a Panasonic FZ5 that is VERY fast
shot to shot! Only DSLR's are faster and my Panasonic cost about 350.00 USD
today. It has Image Stabilization and a 12x optical Leica lens.

If you want to spend all the money go with the Canon 20D or Nikon D200. Both
will cost over 2000.00-2500.00 with a lens that you will like.

Hi all,

I have seen some discussion in the past about the 361 being identical to
the
368, however I have found differing specs between the two.
DS36128x30x13mm18g0.15s/40deg
DS36828x30x13mm22g0.11s/40deg

I believe the difference between the two is the 361 has a 3 pole motor
whereas the 368 has a 5 pole, can anyone out there confirm this??

There were some rumours a number of months ago that the 368 was to be
discontinued, does anyone know if JR Japan has simply been putting 368
stickers onto 361 servos for the US market, I have heard that from at
least
one source fairly close to JR Japan.

Cheers, Les.

CD Tom Kallevang has had the no skeg rule at every
Fred Fredrickson memorial contest that has ever been (OVSS stop in Chicago), I
think that is at least 5 years now. We use a FAI tape.

No bruised shins, no dented leading edges, guys control their landings and get
the points. The same guys that score high with skegs and 1 tapes
score high without skegs on a FAI tape.

It's simple, and it works.

TK is always thinking far ahead, and you guys are going to be surprised at the
format next year. It's not my idea, and not for me to talk about yet, but
I like it a lot.

[RCSE] F3XTD at HSS So Cal.

2002-10-29 Thread Tom Copp
Hello TD Gurus,

We are holding another F3XTD contest this Sunday at the HSS field in
Costa Mesa, Ca.
Look here for more info. http://www.f3x.com/Contest/F3xtd.htm

Please have your entry card in by 8:45. No new entries will be accepted
after 9:10. Once the matrix is set the contest is closed. (Sorry but
that's the way it works). This will give me some time to set the matrix
and we should start flying by 9:30. We will fly 4 10-minute rounds and a
fly off if needed. I will try and keep the contest limited to 4 groups
max if frequencies allow. This should keep us at 1 round per hour. We
will be flying easily until 2:00 so be prepared.

RES pilots will form there own group. Please enter 1 class only as we
will possibly fly RES along with the open models to save time but you
will be scored separately as RES.

For those pilots that have flown the contest before you know the drill.
Fly, time shag. The contest can not run without your help. This format
is a bit different over the normal TD contest; you will be active all
day. Many pilots told me they had more fun because they kept busy.

As before, bring a good TD winch and battery and your entry is free! We
are looking for 4 more winches.

Keep it up,

very tough air, if you zigged when you should have zagged you found yourself
at 1/2 launch height in short time.. The contest used retrievers and 4
winches for 5 man groups, sometimes the last guy in the group launched 1 1/2
to 2 minutes behind the first guy and the professional sandbaggers took full
advantage of it. When the air is that fickle 1 minute is enough time to
figure out who NOT to follow. Short line were not a problem but you did need
a good launch set up.

The contest was defiantly biased towards soaring with a max of 5 landing
points possible.

The contest was also a triathlon scoring thrown in for fun. The first round
was a 3 minute bell curve straight up.

What I heard for suggestions:
* Landing points could be higher but more importantly define a tighter
landing area. If you don't define a landing area then guys are landing all
over the place from all directions. At this contest inside the 1/4 mile
track would be a good landing area. Outside the landing area would receive
no points. It would be safer and more controlled.
* Drop the triathlon, go with all 10 minute man on man flights.
* More winches, the retrievers worked and pilots were launched as soon as
possible with the manpower available. Without retrievers you can get the
group up faster but you also need more help shagging lines. If you have the
space between winches then retrievers are a good idea. At our field we can't
spread out wide enough to keep the bow from the retriever line out of the
next pilots way so you need to wait for the retriever to tighten the line
before the next pilot can launch. Worse in a cross wind.

At HSS we will put some of these suggestion into play so if your July 7th
Sunday is open come on out.

Was there much of guys chasing the leader around
the field, or did
everyone try to find their own air? If it's at all
like the IHLGF, I'm
always surprised how little poaching actually takes
place. You have
less
time to decide in hand launch, and 25' can make a big
difference, but I
would think that with good launches there would be the
opportunity to
just
try and cover the leader.

The launch lines were quite short, and the winches
easily stalled - not much launch height. The air was
brutal - light disorganized lift with BIG sink. I was
not instantly comfortable on any of my flights.
(Except the 3) There was a bit of herd mentality, but
if you wanted to make your times, you needed to break
away from the pack. I think only the top 3 made all
their times - and Cohn turned an 8 minute on a 10
minute task into a 1,000. (So actually only 2 of the
top 3 made their times)

I was trying to figure out if this would have been the
case had the contest NOT been held man on man. I think
many more people would have made their times had it
been held in a normal contest format. There would
have been planes in the air to read and cover. Or to
read and go the other way.

The contest definitely emphasized soaring skills - it
was more fun than the typical steer and stabs we
normally fly in.

Thanks again to ISS for trying something new - it was
a hoot!

2002-06-12 Thread Tom Copp

This thread is going off topic but I have to with Walter on this one,
The last ISR had over 80 individual heat races with 3 pilots per heat on
average with only 3 or 4 model fatalities.
That's not a carnage fest by any stretch of imagination.

Yes, negative talk will keep potential racers away. We are working hard to
get slope racing going again see www.sloperacing.com for info. So we try to
keep things in perspective about the carnage.

Btw. I have one of Marty's video shorts and they are good. Get one.
I am also looking forward to Dave's tape on the 2002 ISR. He shot a bunch of
footage. Including me stuffing my Acacia at base B. ouch!
Well maybe that won't make the video..

Also while I am promoting other peoples stuff go get the VR98 video from
Paul. He had them on sale and it is the BEST I have seen at showing what we
do in F3F.

Geez Walter,

Lighten Up. UNL MOM has enough appeal to with stand a little hype
advertising about a new video release. I love to see a good crash caught on
tape just much as the next guy and I guarantee it does keep me from racing.
As I understand from reading many accounts about the old race series, it was
more a matter lack of support in running the races than the crashes that
killed the series. It also sounded like what made the most recent race at
Davenport such a success was the great support those that stepped up and
organized the event received from several volunteers. The excitement is
there and as long as there is help to run a quality event talk of a few
crashes are not going to keep the racers away.

I am sure, especially if Dave Reese says so, that you have produced an
excellent video. All the head on destruction at Davenport MOM? I realize
that you want to sell your videos, but you have to realize that a lot of
people are putting in a lot of effort to get the ISR MOM going again. I
know a lot of people are scared off by the notion that there is just too
much carnage at a unlimited MOM event and are hesitant to race because of
this. If you take in the amount of racing that took place there during the
last event, and count the head on destruction, you may find there was
very little of this. I hope people considering this race will realize that

[RCSE] HSS F3XTD- mini report.

2002-06-03 Thread Tom Copp

We had 12 pilots in open show up for the contest and 2 RES.
We flew 4 rounds of 3 heats with 4 pilots per heat. After the round the 2
RES guys flew man on man so they also got 4 rounds in.
We had 5 winches on the field (Thanks guys!)

I used a free F3J scoring program that could automatically set the matrix
and score the contest (we did input the scores manually). I did make a few
tweaks to suite our format. In F3J there is a penalty for flying over the 10
minutes so if someone posted a 10:03 for example we input a 9:57 in the
program and it wouldn't add a penalty automatically. I am sure someone could
write a special program for this but that's beyond my capabilities.
Everything worked well for our needs.

Basically we launched the 4 pilots, the next pilot launched when the first
was 1/2 way up the tow. No retrievers. This gave us enough separation that
there was no traffic on final approach if everyone made his time.

With only 12 pilots the 2nd group timed for the first and the 3rd shagged
the winch lines. After a bit the pilots got the hang of the format and some
had their models ready to launch well ahead of time. With a bit more help
and a few more contests everyone will be up to speed and the contest will
move quickly. 2 heats could easily be flown 5 minutes apart. So at a large
contest you could launch 10 pilots every 5 minutes if you wanted.
No line breaks and I think only 1 pop off for the day. Sorry Mark.
I used the std FAI tape (the long one) because we had them already. I will
make the special tape for the next contest.
The next F3XTD contest is the first Sunday next month at HSS field in Costa
Mesa, CA. Come on out. We will set the field for 7 winches next time. (The
club is re conditioning a few extra winches for next month.)

RE: [RCSE] Is an Aquila with a glass fuse Nostalgia Legal

2002-04-05 Thread Tom Copp

I don't know about your particular situation but before 1980 most every
model built from a kit I have seen or owned has been bashed one way or
another. I appreciate the nostalgia's dedication to the era and I do not
envy your job.
Please correct me if I am wrong but the current NOS rules allow carbon spars
and skegs. You can even add spoilers if the kit had none. By doing this you
already opened a big can of worms.
Are your NOS contests so full that you need to limit the entries by
disqualifying minor non-conformance? I would think a carbon spar Windfree
w/skegs that zooms to the moon is less nostalgia than a model with blade
spoilers that were available in the era. You guys have a tough job.
We had some conflicts out west also. There is a movement for balsa built up
models only but then some guy heading the Balsa Task Force glasses over
the fuse w 6oz cloth and epoxies on a 5 landing skeg. What's up with
that???
BTW. I just received my BoT plans from RCM ($9.00) and plan to build it
like my old one from 1979 w/3- piece wing, change the dihedral angles,
skinny wood fuse and no sub fin. Although I might add some of those high
dollar blade spoilers even though my old BoT had none and carbon spars. No
5 long skegs for me though. I have to draw the line somewhere. Am I still
NOS legal? It will be RES legal.
Q. Will a BoT with a new glass fuse be NOS legal? As far as I know these
were not commercially available but if this gets more guys interested why
not?

Hi Ray,
Could you ask Tim about vertical popup blade spoilers? I put a set of
Graupner spoilers in my standard Aquila before 1980. I am about to take them
out but won't if I can fly with them. Last year I won a Nostalgia contest
with it but had them disconnected and taped down. I was CD and didn't want
to
cause controversy. If anyone but me had shown up with s similar setup I
would
have allowed them to fly. Many of the mods we made years ago didn't really
enhance performance much. These spoilers are certainly not better than the
old tilt up style.

RE: [RCSE] Fuselage painting help

2002-04-05 Thread Tom Copp

James,
Go to your local Auto Body supply shop and buy some of their high dollar
(11.00) spray paint of the shelf. The cans spray wonderfully and the paint
is almost as durable as the paint on a car. Temco or Tepco or ??? is one
brand name.

Option 2. Go to Pep Boys or Kragen or ?? and buy Dupli-Color spray paint.
It's a lacquer base and dries very fast. Also buy a can of Dupli-Color clear
wheel paint to go over that. Their sandable filler primer surfacer is about
the best primer out of a can you will find for under 5.00.

Subject: [RCSE] Fuselage painting help

Now I know this may be a bit heretical, but I wish to paint my Compulsion
fuse. I am aware that it will add a bit of weight. My Addiction flies
extremely well with a white fuse. I am very pleased with the Compulsion
and want to dress it up a bit. The problem is finding a good, affordable
paint system. I used Krylon on the Addiction - it soaks up dirt, sweat,
looks dull, is thick and generally poor looking. I have two problems:

My air compressor was stolen. I am thinking about using disposable spray
bottles which the industrial paint store sells. They have a small bottom
jar which can be loaded with any kind of paint. The nozzel will not be
ideal - anyone have any thoughts on using this system. The cost is quite
reasonable - how are the results in the real world?

What kind of paint / primer is suitable for this job? Oh by the way, is
it still for sale! I have a friend who uses KB epoxy for all of his
work and it looks great - he stocked up 4 years ago. Imron works fine
but is expensive and very toxic. Dupont makes a system called Ful-Thane
(sp ?) which is a catalized paint with an epoxy 2 part primer. It is not
quite as expensive or toxic but still needs careful precautions. Anyone
used this and how about looks / durability / weight?

Anything else out there which makes sense to get a good looking / durable
finish? I considered LusterKote but the last time I used that was on my
Condor and the peel strength of the bond was awful. It is possible
something went wrong but that fuse has areas where the tape has wholesale
removed the paint and looks terrible.

Many thanks for any help. I hope to have a flight report soon. I am so
happy with my Addiction that a better flying plane is hard to imagine,
nevertheless, this plane sure looks like that will be the case. Jim

RE: [RCSE] Nyx teething problem????

2002-03-01 Thread Tom Copp

All the new NYX have the carbon aero shaft and steel pushrod ends for
elevator. I would recommend that you replace the aluminum pushrod end with a
steel end or use a spring steel clevis epoxy directly inside the carbon aero
shaft.
You can get to the bell crank without surgery but it is a bitch. That
plastic clevis with the brass pin really hold tight.
1. Grab and spin the carbon pushrod to un-screw the clevis at the bell crank
2. Open the rudder clevis and fold back the rudder so you have access to the
fin post.
3. Rotate the bell crank (stabs of) so the clevis is positioned at the slot
in the fin post and pull the brass pin from the clevis.
4. Replace the aluminum pushrod end by heating the aluminum end with a
soldering iron and pull out.
5. Epoxy in the steel clevis directly or shorten the carbon rod and add a
piece of music wire and a wood wedge in the end of the pushrod and solder
the clevis directly to the wire. Like the old days.
6. Install the pushrod.
7. That's it.

The NYX went through a few design changes on the F3B versions. If your
carbon NYX weighs about 75oz you have a great carbon skinned F3J and overly
strong AMA ship. The current F3B lay up gives a model that is 81oz RTF and
real world F3B strength.

FYI, There was a report on an elevator pushrod failure in Australia a few
weeks ago. The model will be replaced at no charge.

Even though David and the Australian gentleman are not my customers I want
you all to know that the NYX manufacturer backs up his products. Call your
dealer for the right model to fit your needs.

Subject: [RCSE] Nyx teething problem

Greetings,
I think all that have flown the Nyx will agree that it is a sweet
flyer and would highly recommend it. However, I will say beware the
elevator pushrod. I have (fortunately still) the F3B version with the
carbon pushrod and what a fine pushrod it is. The problem lay with
the aluminium threaded coupler at the belcrank (rear) end. Yup,
aluminium !!!
It's the same coupler supplied for the servo end. All you have to do
is bounce the tail on the ground (and I mean bounce, not slap) and
the weight of the pushrod, coupled with the weight of the tailplane
supplying a compression load, bends the 2-56 size Alum. thread. The
next launch provides enough load to further bend the thread to about
45 degrees to the pushrod, leaving you flying straight and level
holding about half up elevator to land if your lucky The
thread snapped off while I was undoing the clevis.

Remedy; Replace the alum. coupler with a steel coupler, and/or
support the weight of the push rod with a balsa block. To insert the
balsa support block, I did it in two stages. First, glue a block
about half the size required to the bottom of the fuse by using a
2-56 threaded wire into the balsa. When the glue has set, unscrew the
wire and glue in the next block on top of the first. The reason for
two blocks is there is not enough access to do it in one step.

Now I can fly this magnificent aircraft with total confidence and I
do highly recommend it to anyone interested.

For those interested:

I just unpacked an Erase Xtreme CDT (carbon D tube)I bought from Skip Miller
at the SWC. Out of the box the parts weighed as follows:

Fuse with tail and pushrods: 357.2 grams - 12.6 ounces
Left Wing: 227.7 grams - 8.0 ounces
Center Wing: 521.9 grams - 18.4 ounces
Right Wing: 230.9 grams - 8.2 ounces
Misc Parts(screws, wing joiners, etc):71.4 grams - 2.5 ounces

Now, if I did the math right, thats 1409.1 grams, or 49.7 ounces before
radio gear installation. Figure on 16 or so ounces for gear and nose
weight, and it should fly around 66 ounces or so. Cool!!

 The Harbor Soaring

tech planes, i.e. Rudder Elevator Spoiler only. Thisquestion
was debated; As a competition class, what other restrictions should

 The
majoritywere happywith the AMA definition of RES, which allows any
typeof construction materials/methods and allows skegs.

 The other options
discussed were:

1.Nostalgia rules, meaning designs
kitted during or before 1980.

2. TPG rules, meaning AMA rules but no

2002-01-09 Thread Tom Copp

HI John,

I just
went through this drill a few months ago. What I found is there are pilots for
each sub category (big surprise)

Nostalgia
is not necessary all wood construction, its pre 1980. But spoilers are allowed
to be added and the structure i.e. carbon spars, spruce spars can replace balsa
etc. You cant make a wood wing a foam/glass wing though. Mixing radios are
allowed. Plastic and glass fuses are allowed if the kits had them.

Local HSS
rules are really a problem because one guy has the say as what is OK and what
is NOT. Nothing in writing and on the books and that is what I pushed for.

The AMA
has gone through this and approved RES as Rudder, Elevator and top mounted
spoilers that move in unison, no other restrictions apply except for AMA safety
rules.

The big 3
west coast contests use the AMA RES rules.

A few
built up only contests are held. They were popular.

My vote is
for AMA RES. This will allow original designs, Nostalgia, balsa and foam to
fly. Some guys are worried about mega
buck models winning the class; they should be worried about who is at the
sticks.

RE: [RCSE] Christmas Came Early Shameless F3X self-promotion. Hit delete.

2001-12-12 Thread Tom Copp

Thanks Pat,

Yes the NYX (say Nix) are starting to ship. Mark and I received #2 #3
prototypes out of the molds 1 week before Visalia. Now only 2 months later
(including import) and the first batch of 8 production NYX's are delivered
to my customers. If you're on the waiting list hang on because by mid
January we should be receiving about 8 models a month for the USA. To get
the models coming in as soon as possible I ordered random colors along with
specific customer requests. I received a bit of both. F3X will order any
color or scheme (within reason) for our customers on any model I sell. Of
course the wait is a bit longer but I like the fact that you can get a model
built exactly the way you want it. This includes different lay up options
for TD, F3J, F3F, F3B and special DS versions. I order the most popular std
colors and configurations for stock to keep things moving but if you want
something special give me a call. It might be thought of as a bad business
decision by others but I think it is more fun this way. Don't you?

One thing you might not know is the F3X NYX and Artemis models now all come
with a ballast kit and pre wired airframes. Yes, the harness is built and
installed; the wing mounts to the fuse with an auto hook up DB9 connector
installed, the wires are ran to the flap servo pockets and out the main
panel to the tips. Both are terminated with a female socket to plug your
servos into, the fuse harness has 4 leads up to the nose for your receiver
Sweet!

When you order a F3X NYX you get a state of the art model including 2001
airfoil technology, a planform designed by a PHD in Aerodynamics, high teck
materials- Kevlar/carbon fuse, Kevlar carbon D tube (or other versions),
pre wired airframe, ballast tube and ballast included, choice of colors and
sometimes very friendly service. You also get the model that is right for
your skill level and advice from a R/C sailplane pilot for 23 years and on
my good days can pose a threat in TD, F3F, or F3J contests and I have the
Wood to prove it. Being a Has-Been is better than a Never-Was any day
of the week.

Look over what F3X has to offer the soaring community; yes I cater to the
competition pilot because that is what I like. Other vendors are better
suited for beginner pilots with models designed for their budget and skill
level. The models I sell will do the task properly or I will tell you about
it. I personally fly each design to make sure it is right for the job and
not just write about it. When your ready to make that next step in
performance give me a call and we can talk about your needs.

Seiko's for Christmas!

Shameless F3X self-promotion is now over.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Subject: [RCSE] Christmas Came Early

Hi Gang,

Christmas came early today in Wichita in the form of my new NYX. It has
been quite a while since I owned my Hera and I am pleasantly amazed at how
much better the quality has gotten from this manufacturer. Now do not get
me wrong the Hera was a really nice plane but they have taken it to a new
level with the NYX. Thanks to Tom Copp at www.f3x.com we get a chance to
own these fine models at a good price. I hope to have it in the air soon so
I can start getting it tuned and ready for the FUN IN THE SUN in Phoenix in
February. More to come as I get it in the air.

See Ya,

RE: [RCSE] Nats..reply..Numbers (long)

2001-12-12 Thread Tom Copp

I have to agree with you on that. If you want to see FAI events grow in the
USA then we need to hold more club level contests. I agree that the AMA TD
contests that we all go to in the last 20+ years are very much the same, no
it's not easy to win, it's fun and social but it is also less challenging
than FAI events.

We ran some F3J contests 2 years ago and the response from hard-core AMA TD
pilots that tried it REALLY liked the challenge, you have to think more and
it makes you better.

F3B will teach you plane control like no other flat land soaring. It's
interesting how many good TD pilots can't do a straight distance course.
It's all for lack of practice I know; it's not our game. We need to start
off slow. With just the 3 F3B contests a year it's too intimidating for new
guys to enter and there are so few F3B contests that the more serious guys
don't want there limited F3B weekends diluted with a F3B school. Where does
that leave us? You need the new guys and you need the good contests to
succeed.

As someone said earlier the current AMA TD ships would make great entry
F3J/F3B models so lets do this:
On 1 weekend set up the F3B course and use club winches and whatever TD
models you have to fly some simple F3B just to get the feel for it. Remember
the sportsman F3B years ago? (The one that died) I wouldn't make it a
contest but more like a F3B clinic at your local field. Have fun with it.
Repeat.

For F3J fly winched launch man on man, the hand tow is fun but a big pain in
the ### especially for us fat guys.

F3X started F3F in the USA 2 years ago from nothing. Now we have a good west
coast circuit with events every month. N vs. S competitions and big 2 day
contests, It can be done with F3J or F3B but don't expect it to out grow TD
for years and years. Start at home and work on the Nats later.

As for the Nats I never attended one. I would like to. Especially for F3J or
F3B if the contest was longer. So that's why I never went.
I am talking through my hat because I do not know the schedule or lay out
but if the Nats could host 3 days of either F3B or F3J at the same time as 2
meter, scale, res. and Nos I am sure that the FAI entries would grow, yes
the FAI guys would have to give up RES, 2 meter and scale to compete and
bring there equipment and some manpower but if that's the price you need to
pay. In F3F you are REQUIRED to work or the contest doesn't go. Give the FAI
guys the odd freq if the field is in radio conflict with the other events.
The price of crystals isn't that bad considering the overall expense of the
trip. It's just a thought. Anyway someone with Nats experience should do the
scheduling.

Some people want to move forward (fai) some move back (res, nos) to simpler
times. I see the same faces at Visalia year after year. Where are the new
guys? Where are the juniors? Is this addiction of ours a habit or do you
still enjoy it? Do you want a challenge? Is it the money or the time? In So
California we are loosing our fields to Golf courses Soccer fields. We can
show a history of use but not a growth. The sky is falling! The sky is
falling!

Have fun, see you in AZ!

Mike,
You (ok we) are fightning a losing battle. Everyone has every number
that supports their position. The simple thing is that the LSF is going to
support the masses, not the competitive and international arena. While all
other RC competitions view the FAI tasks as the pinnacle of their
competition, soaring views it as a fringe activity. To most soaring
participants, F3b or F3j are stupid events that have no basis or impact on
their soaring persuits. Of course that rules out molded planes, airfoil
design, Joe and Darryl, launching increases, etc... But to them they simply
don't care.
Jack is right, 2M is more popular than F3b. More people showed up, so
that must mean it is more popular.

[RCSE] RES, 3-F, Nos.

2001-11-09 Thread Tom Copp

I need help clarifying the 3-F, RES, Nostalgia classes bent wing. It looks
simple enough but there are MANY variables on the local interpretation of
these classes.

A few of the larger contests fly RES or 3-F (3 function). What they usually
mean is rudder, elevator spoiler. 3-F should be interpreted as any 3
control i.e. ailerons, elevator, flaps but most clubs are looking for bent
wing ships or RES (I think).

Nostalgia and RES are different because Nostalgia planes are models kitted
or published plans before 01/01/1980 (?) with a few mods. Can I fly a
Dodgson Todi in Nostalgia?

Can the clubs involved decide on better definitions for these following
classes? I propose the following to get the discussion going:

Lets define 3-F class as any 3 functions like REF (rudder, elevator, flaps)
or AEF (aileron, elevator, flaps) or XXX. This could be a creative class.

Nostalgia. Kits or plans built models before 01/01/1980. I understand the
want for stronger spars for models designed before winches but why add
spoilers if the kit never had them? No skegs either. By definition you have
to allow early aileron designed (pre 1980) models in the class.

RES. Rudder, elevator spoiler. That's it.

Bent wing. My NYX has a bent wing. Does it qualify? Drop the definition.

Notice I didn't cover materials yet. Here it goes.

There is strong support to turn back the clocks to a simpler time and get to
balsa, open structure, RES models. If that is your goal then lets have a
class that is called RES Balsa or ???.

Of course I have a motive here. I sell models and am working with builders
on a new toy and I want to know what class is most popular and most
supported to design the new model around. I am sure other builders are
interested as well and will be looking for this information. Here is a good
chance to develop a class that will be supported by manufactures if the
rules are understood.

Open for discussion.

[RCSE] F3J Team selections

2001-09-13 Thread Tom Copp

This was my 3rd team selection (2 F3J, 1 F3B) and I really like the high
level of competition you have at team selections. The normal TD contest like
the FSF, are more social events and much less challenging as a whole. Don't
get me wrong you don't see my name at the top of the leader board at most
contests but I like good high level competition and I found it at the team
selections every time.

Thoughts for next time:

Team Protection: In the future I would like to see 4-man team protection as
the norm. F3J is labor intensive and we all say we want more participation
in F3J contests. 4 men are the max allowed on the field, 1 pilot 3
helpers. If everyone on the team is also a pilot then you don't need to
Hire a tow man. Of course in the fly off all protection is out.

Carrying scores: For us bottom feeders carrying scores wont help us make the
team at all but it does allow the better pilots to win a competition not a
crap shoot.

2-man tow w/stake: It has worked every time for me and it equals the tow
power available. With a 2-man stake tow and a little wind the launch power
is very equal for all the teams.
I am sure there are 40+ other stories about the F3J team selection, for me I
would like to thank my teammates for caring my weight thought the
competition (I couldn't tow this time) and I would like to thank SOAR for
hosting the selections and rounding up the workforce to put on a good show.
I know my club in So Cal wouldn't have the manpower to run such an event
If you like great competition and want to learn more about the finer points
of our hobby I highly recommend getting involved in the team selection
process, until we get more FAI type events in the USA it's the only game in
town. BTW. Aren't you all bored with the regular launch and land contests
yet?

The euro-tour contest started today in a slow tempo. Many of the WC contries
are flying in the event, but not all.
The reigning WC Darryl Perkins blow up his model (Icon) during launch.
The flying field is big and open and the teams has been training on it since
monday.
The weather has been good whole week with temperatures above 30 degreese and
very light wind (except today when it was 4-6 m/s)
More to come...

[RCSE] GLUED IN SERVOS (2nd tip of the day)

2000-09-28 Thread Tom Copp

Hello,

When installing servos in a molded wing without pre-molded pockets you
usually need to attach them to the inside of the top skin. Before you do
this first apply some 8oz fiberglass or 6oz carbon patches 1/2 " larger than
the access hole to the inside of the skin with laminating epoxy (West
systems works) to cover the area where the servo will rest. With the lighter
overall weight on the newer molded ships (like we all want) the inside skin
is usually very light f/g cloth .75 to 1oz weight and can be damaged when
the servo needs to be removed. Try and run a corner of the patch up the side
of the spar. This patch also stiffens the wing skin quite a bit and makes
for a firm installation.

When I epoxy the servo in I usually sand the surface of the servo a bit and
the area that I will bond to. I found that most epoxy will not stick to the
servo case material. I usually use 30-minute epoxy and micro balloons and
add just enough spooge to seat the servo in the wing with a LITTLE excess
curling up around the edges. Do not force the servo tight against the
surface and clamp in place because that will flatten the wing skin and stay
that way. Gently float the servo in position and tape in place until the
epoxy has set up. Less is best.

Removing servos installed with epoxy; Gently twist the servo clockwise (If
in the northern Hemisphere) with a pair of long nose pliers if you have the
room. The servo will just pop out. If you can't get a good grip on the servo
then use 1/4 music wire through the wing root and gently but firmly tap the
corner of the servo to apply a twisting force and the servo will pop out.
This is easiest with a 3-piece wing. When you replace the servo the epoxy
micro spooge formed a perfect mold of the servo, so apply a VERY THIN layer
of epoxy and replace the servo in the spooge bed. Your servo will be exactly
in the same position as before.
The trick is to twist the servo. Do not pull the servo out or you could
bring the skin with it.

This method has been used for years with great success. If you use quality
servos the need for repair is minimal.

RE: [RCSE] RE: Big Fast slope plane

2000-06-12 Thread Tom Copp

Hi Guys,
Thanks Nathan for helping out.
The Gambler I offer has an obechi skinned wing and tail. The description on
my site is correct although the photo is not:)
Fred Sage is building a few of his thermal wings around the Gambler fuse and
I am sure he would be happy to make a carbon RG 15 wing for the slope to
your specs.
The Gambler fuse will probably fit inside the Diamond fuse (also wider than
the eagle fuse) There is just enough room to place the servos side by side,
longer boom, slip off nose, standard tail.
The Miraj is a very competitive slope racer...FAST!! It's butt ugly but does
the job.
Also check out the Blitz from CSD. Nice model at a good price.
If you have more questions email me off the list.

[RCSE] You know your getting old when....

2000-04-07 Thread Tom Copp

I must be getting old! I have a F3F race this weekend and I ordered some
models in December so I would have them in time for the season. Because of
one thing or another they haven't arrived yet. I was able to pry a Pike F3F
model from Mark Taylor's cold dead fingers for this weekends race. I have a
few 'Hot Laps" on the Pike at my local slope in Costa Mesa but that is all.
The Pike is a very easy plane to fly and is quite fast, by all means a world
class model. But it's not mine.

As I was getting my work life in some kind of order so I can get away this
weekend, the guy in the little truck pulled up and delivered my Acacia
order. I tore open the box, found the hardware and assembled the model
Yea Baby!! Now let me think, if I do an all niter I can get it together,
get up early, pack the car, change my oil, drive to Los Banos before the sun
sets for some trim flights, enter the contest, post fast time, win every
round...Hey, after all the model is already built! The younger Tom would
just be removing the wings from the bag of his next "World Beater" two days
before the contest anyway. That set up was good for a few victories in the
past, it also had a built in excuse for a bad showing!

Now the Getting Old part. I didn't do it! I thought about it. I just
couldn't do it. The thought of a good night sleep was too overpowering. (The
bench was dirty anyway)

The older (Wiser??)

[RCSE] Passaj molded wing

2000-03-10 Thread Tom Copp

I will post this here to cover the majority of requests for the Passaj.

Thanks for all the interest on the Passaj wings.
The wings are made in hard female molds with a solid 2 lb foam core. You
need to cut and hinge the ailerons yourself. Fit 2 wing servos and linkage,
put your radio into the wing root, cover and bond on the winglets.
The wing comes in 2 pieces you fit the radio in the root. It has a carbon
fiber wing rod. Slide the wing together and tape the joint and fly! It
breaks down into a small package for transport and if you bolt on the
winglets you can easily pack it to carry almost everywhere.

I just ran out. I will place an order tomorrow for Passaj and Aldi j models.
I should have them in 3 to 4 weeks.

Subject: [RCSE] Passa-J Molded flying wing

There is a web site at www.chez.com/aeromod/ that shows some pretty neat
planes. Of particular interest is a sort of molded "Zagi" style flying
wing, the Passa-J. As the site is in French and my command of the French
language is only enough to allow ordering a good meal at a French eatery,
I'd like to know more about the Passa-J and other planes described at this
site. Does anyone import their products to the USA? What about prices and
availability?

[RCSE] F3J Team Hera Raffle

2000-01-07 Thread Tom Copp

In order to head off any confusion for those on the waiting list for a Hera
model. The Hera that was donated to the USA F3J team is my personal
red/black Hera I bought last year as a backup. As you very well know the
Hera shipments have been very, very slow. ICARE and Composite Specialties
wanted to donate a model to the team to help raise money and the only Hera
available in hand was mine. So I will have to fly my old beat up Hera for a
while longer until my new one arrives..yes I still have to get on the
waiting list.
I hope this helps some and go out and get your tickets. This Hera really
exists!

Try
Aircraft Spruce.

Also buy 1
lb of cotton flox for a lighter, as strong (for hobby use) filler. Or go see
your Christmas tree vendor and ask for some cotton snow stuff.

RE: [RCSE] Molded 'Herra' weight ?

1999-12-05 Thread Tom Copp

Richard,
The lightest one I weighed was 48oz dry. 68 oz RTF. Depending on radio and
installation the average Hera weight is 71 oz RTF. The Hera "Special"
w/ballast tubes and heavier wing lay up is about 75oz RTF.

[RCSE] Stylus to Vanguard trainer

1999-10-07 Thread Tom Copp

Hello,
I have a need to hook up my Stylus to a 4 ch Vanguard for a training system.

Will this work?

Does the Vanguard work through the Stylus? Vanguard can be on a different
channel.

Will I still have the mixing when the Vanguard is active? i.e.. snap flap,
crow, elevator comp?

I am hoping that the Vanguard will be like remote sticks for the Stylus. Is
this true?

TIA,
Tom

[RCSE] F3F Race Results

1999-09-19 Thread Tom Copp

The wind blew all week! Then Saturday morning the whole world (Southern
California anyway) was covered by a thick marine layer no wind, no sun, no
thermals. We started when the wind blew enough to support flight; it was
decided (by me) to start round zero. There was only 13 entered and for 1/2
the field, this was their first F3F race. Everyone worked well together and
helped out with the task of running the race.
The lift was flyable, probably very close to the F3F minimum velocity all
day. There was actually a few times when the planes made that "go fast"
sound. Well the goal of breaking into the 30's was modified to breaking into
the 50's. Jerry Craft with his new Brisk II was closest with a 61.10. The
lift was on the verge of requiring ballast, everyone tried to find the best
wing loading to squeeze a little extra speed from the conditions. Bruce
Beddoe flew his OD model very well to win a round and take 3rd, Bruce looked
on track the whole day. I think the California F3F series is starting to dig
up some very competitive pilots. Keep on coming!!
I want to thank everyone who showed up and put in a long day. I hope you had
some fun and can see the potential for competitive slope racing coming back
to California. It will only work with your help.

[RCSE] New F3F toys!!

1999-08-13 Thread Tom Copp

I just received my Pike F3F/B and Kobra F3F (not that cobra!) from Samba
today. The Pike looks real good, 3 piece wing V tail etc. etc.. Fit and
finish is very good. All wipers and live hinges (top hinge flap 60~65
deg down) finished. They come with all nutplates/pushrods installed and
include all hardware and even the allen wrenches!

The little Kobra F3F (100 in) is real cute. 2 piece wing with a poly
break, one piece stab w/ elevator, T tail, all molded even the rudder.
Pre assembled tail linkages/ pushrods w/4 ballast tubes in the wing
roots. This thing breaks down flat to fit into a 50 in box. I think the
Kobra will make a very nice full house travel model.
Both have mod (thinned) RG 15 foils.

I am looking forward to test flying them soon. Flight report coming!!
