The site's browser sniffer lets you in because it thinks you are using ff 2.0.0.7. That's called UA spoofing. The User Agent string is what is reported to the web site's server as the browser and OS you are using. At some time, you changed the User Agent string in SeaMonkey 1.1.18 to spoof FF 2.0.0.7, probably to fix a similar problem with another web site. You may not remember doing it, but clearly you did it at some time. This can be done manually in about:config, or by an extension, such as teh UA switcher. I don't know how you did it. Installing 2.0 caused SeaMonkey to report as what it actually is, SeaMonkey 2.0. If I spoof the 2.0 UA to report as FF 3.5, it works fine too. To tell users that going back to Sm 1.1.18 to *fix* this problem is totally incorrect. SM 1.1.18 with its proper user agent has exactly the same problem as SM 2.0. I understand your frustration over the Sm 2.0 upgrade. Still, it is unwise to simply post blanket *fixes* as you have done tonight. The only way your SeaMonkey 1.1.X will report that user agent value is if YOU put it in there at some point. The fact that you don't remember doing it doesn't change that fact. The spoofing goes in the Profile. The profile is not shared between SeaMonkey 1.1.X and SeaMonkey 2.X, so the spoofing done in 1.1.X would not have been copied to 2.0 (unless, again, you copied it). As a result, the fact that your installation of SeaMonkey 2.0 is not spoofing itself as FireFox is not a surprise. ps... MSOHEV.DLL keeps breaking my Seamonkey icons
I have been a loyal user of Netscape-descended products since about 1995. I went through the whole old Netscape family from 1 to 4.x, then moved to Mozilla Application Suite when it went 1.0 and eventually to Seamonkey, also when it went 1.0 -- and now I moved to Seamonkey 2. (By the way, I think I should point out that I never had any significant problems with any of them -- the opposite in fact, since the few problems I had were *easily* solved, while similar problems with IE or Outlook Express in my customers' machines turned out to be major headaches.) However, for a number of reasons, for a long time I kept Internet Exploder as the official default browser in my Windows setup -- mainly because it used to load faster when I clicked on a local HTML file, and also because a few IE-dependent applications had problems if you changed default browser. I almost never used IE for actual Internet browsing, much less OE or even Outlook for e-mail. Then IE7 (and later IE8) came, and Microsoft finally took steps to separate the browser from the operating system -- a small step in the right direction from a security standpoint. But the end result is that IE now loads quite slower, negating the advantage of leaving it as the default HTML file viewer. Also, with the rise of Firefox, other applications learned how to deal with a computer where IE is not the default browser. So, with a song in my heart, I thought I was finally able to set Seamonkey as the default browser. Or so I thought. Turns out that there is a Microsoft piece of crap that insists on ruining it: the so-called Office HTML Icon Handler (MSOHEV.DLL). It is installed (no choice about it) with Office 2003, and modifies the standard way Explorer handles HTML files: if it finds a line in the HTML header indicating that an Office application generated that file, it does two things: 1. If you right-click the file and choose Edit, it will open the file on the so-called appropriate application (usually Word, but sometimes Excel or PowerPoint) instead of on the default HTML editor (Notetab, a plaintext editor, in my case). 2. It will change the icon and filetype description in Explorer to indicate the file special status as an office HTML file. Having a different icon is (sometimes) convenient, because it makes it plain that that file will need hand-tweaking (Word-generated HTML is so full of crap that after I finish with it, the file has usually shrunk by two-thirds or more). But it makes browsing a directory with lots of HTML files very slow, since the handler will have to open each file to check. But I could live with the lowered performance, so I let it be. Until, that is, when it *broke*. Now all my HTML files display the unknown file type icon (although they are listed correctly as Seamonkey Document). I tried all sorts of remedies. I tried unregistering the DLL, as detailed here: http://richardrudek.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!8B65F3DE0BE797AA!219.entry I tried deleting the Iconhandler subkey on the Seamonkey HTML Registry key. I tried setting the default browser back to IE and then to Seamonkey again. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office. I tried manually choosing the correct icon. All solutions I found were transitory at best. As soon as I use Word it will restore the defaults and crap all over my setup again. All email accounts got imported, along with the SMTP server definition. While I can send emails just fine in SM1, I always get an error when sending emails with SM2. The error says this: Unable to authenticate to SMTP server SERVER_NAME. The serer does not support any compatible insecure authentication mechanism but you have chosen insecure authentication. Try switching on secure authentication or contact your service provider. I tried turning on TLS or even SSL, but none of these are provided by the given server. What I find weird is that it worked and continues to work fine in SM1. Obviously, some option has been removed/disabled in SM2, but which one? Is there a way to reactivate it? Thanks My situation is that I can receive just gangbusters with SM2. But it refuses to send, giving the SMTP-AUTH message. However, the server settings show no security, no Auth. Let me know if you get it working and most of all, how you did it. I think that may be your problem, you have to match your settings to the server, if it wants auth you have to provide it. Since I don't know what your server wants I can't be sure, but there's a reasonable possibility that you need to configure auth. Not only that, but secure auth, like TLS+SSL (I forget the exact choice in the list), but it's not the checkbox, it's the menu about 1/3 down the screen. Thanks. I will try that one. jim I am experiencing similar problems, and went so far as to ask our systems people at the University of Delaware to check it out; they downloaded Seamonkey 2.0 and couldn't get it to work with our servers with any combination of settings (Seamonkey 1.x worked fine). I also have been unable to get the SMTP settings to work with Speakeasy's SMTP server (my isp), which had no problem with Seamonkey 1.x; I tried authentication on and off, as well as playing with multiple options. So far, the only SMTP server that's worked for me is google. Are there some compatibility issues in the new setting options? Their plan is to serve different versions to users with specific browsers. I got it work by spoofing Firefox. You spoofed IE, and it did not work, probably because the version served was for the IE rendering engine. SeaMonkey has the same gecko rendering engine as Firefox. Always try spoofing Firefox first, that is most likely to work with SeaMonkey. By the way, you asked earlier about a version of IE tab that would work with 2.0, yet you state that you hate running IE. Using IE tab in SeaMonkey just converts SM to an IE shell, you might as well be running IE. Not that this is a crime, but just a point to consider. IMAP cleanup behavior question
I've configured SM2.0 to access my Gmail via IMAP. I've seen the options for cleanup/sync, and from what I understand, it lets you delete messages by age or by count- but both from server and locally. The sync option above lets you synchronize messages based on no. of days. I don't want to delete my old mails- I have em dating back to 2004 when I first created my gmail account. So correct me if I'm wrong, is this how it works?- -Sync is set to last 15 days, so only mails from the last 15 days get downloaded. -But if I set it to cleanup messages (either the last x no. of messages or by age), it will delete everything, including older mails (which may not have been downloaded and only have headers) Is there a way to retain headers of older mails but not delete them- yet keep flushing out the downloaded mail bodies of the previous x no. of days? - I used to be schizophrenic, but we're ok now. - ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey

You installed SeaMonkey 1.1.18 first. Did you transfer settings and files from your previous windows installation? Specifically, did you transfer your 1.1.18 profile from your previous Windows installation? If so, anything you did with SeaMonkey 1.1.18 was carried over. Heck, I've forgotten about more things I've done with computers then I remember. I've often switched the UA to troubleshoot an issue, then forgot that I did it. Fortunately the Prefbar extension reset it as the true UA on a restart, or all of you might be wondering how I am posting here in IE6 on XP :) Anyhow, if you reset the pref in about:config as I described elsewhere, you will find that reverting to 1.1.18 is not an answer to these kind of problems. Right now I donot think I should mess with something that is access all the websites . I know u are trying to figure out WHY . and I hope your Conversations May help the develpers figure this out in the Future . The problem with a permanent UA spoofing is that the web sites' logs will indicate that any visit you make with is with Firefox, not SeaMonkey. These web site developers will then have no real reason to update their browser sniffers to include SeaMonkey. What I do when I encounter such a site is to spoof the UA to Firefox. If I am successful in getting in, I write the web developer of that site to tell them that SeaMonkey can in fact deliver their page accurately, and ask them to adjust their browser sniffer accordingly. I'm not saying that you should go that far. However, if you leave your UA permanently spoofed, you are not helping to broaden web access for SeaMonkey. The user does play an important part here. I would suggest returning to the true UA. Then, via an extension such as Preference Toolbar, or the UA switcher, switch the us on an as needed basis. That way, at least the web logs will indicate a attempted visit by SeaMonkey, so an tech evangelism attempt will have more credence. Bug in text areas
I've noticed this when typing in a text area. I've typed some text, and then changed focus from the textarea. When I click back on it, nothing happens unless I click exactly where I was last editing. I click anywhere else, the textarea does not acquire focus, the mouse arrow remains an arrow (doesn't change to the text cursor) and the cursor does not appear. To put it another way, if I click on a text area that has text in it, I expect the text cursor to appear where I clicked. This does not happen. If I click at the last letter that I typed, then the cursor appears, and I have to navigate by keyboard to get back to where I want to edit. - Pentium instruction of the day: FLI: Flash Lights Impressively - ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey

The link is: http://www.tvguide.com/listings/default.aspx This is bug #330094. It was reported to the Mozilla community about 3-1/2 years ago, for Camino 1.0. Less than two weeks later, it was also noted to occur in a very early alpha version of SeaMonkey 2.0 (1.5a). About a month after this bug was reported, a duplicate bug reported the problem against Firefox 1.5.0.2. While the www.tvguide.com site has apparently been upgraded to work with Firefox, bug #330094 remains open since the site still fails to work with other Gecko browsers. Lee OK by this if I spoof the UA which I did by installing (User Agent Switcher) and spoofed IE-7. However, this did not get it to work, the only way it works is to use Internet Explorer. Any ideas on how to get this to work, I hate having to run IE. Thank you everyone. Okay, lets consider why sites sniff for browsers.
