Hello,

On [1], Dutch translation of the gnome-software package, there are still 
505 untranslated strings. Most of these are messages for flatpak, snaps 
or rpm-ostree and they contain text about fixes and improvements.


In my view, it is totally useless to translate these strings because 
they will not show in the gnome-software application and are not useful 
to the average user.


Gnome-software 3.38 is 100% translated, see [2]. This should show all 
the strings in the ubuntu-software application in my ubuntu 20.04 in 
Dutch. Unfortunately this is not the case on my PC. I see 3 languages in 
my installed Ubuntu Software. I have the latest updates for the Dutch 
language pack (base and updates).


My questions are:

1. Why do I see 3 languages in Categories: e.g. Books and References, 
Spelletjes, Santé et remise en forme. I used the mirror 
fr.archives.ubuntu.com because I live in France, but I have the Dutch 
language installed. I changed the mirror to nl.archives, but after 
updating there were no changes in the language use in Ubuntu Software.


2. Difference Ubuntu Software / Gnome Software: US also has strings for 
Flatpack, Snaps and rpm-ostree. When I search for e.g. Books and 
References in [1], I get no results. But how come I see this 
(untranslated) in Categorieën (Dutch) in my Ubuntu Software application?


I hope I haven't made this too complicated. Please let me know if you 
need further information.

Dutch translation is ok, I will leave it as is.

updated translations for respective language.

names of the langpacks which have been copied to bionic-proposed are:

Maybe the .deb version in the next ubuntu release will be gimp 2.10. Or 
I can download and install gimp 2.10 manually in Bionic.

Those translations will probably make it to the users the next time 
respective packaging team updates from upstream.


So, basically:

* As regards flatpak - ask those who package it for flatpak

* As regards snap - ask those who package it for snap

In other words it's not so much an Ubuntu matter.

(The .deb version in Bionic is 2.8.22, and that will probably not 
change.)

Language pack updates?

Hi,

We have just finished the Dutch translation of Gimp 2.10 [1]. I have 
installed gimp 2.10 in Ubuntu Bionic and ran it with this command: 
flatpak run org.gimp.GIMP. Everything works fine, but I still see a lot 
of untranslated strings in the menus.


Does anyone know how I can get all the translated strings in this 
version of gimp?

Translation Ubuntu Docs

Hello,

It is always a bit of a struggle to find the right place to translate 
ubuntu-docs. I have several links in my web browser's favorites, but it 
is always a wild guess which one to use, see below. From an earlier 
email discussion I understand that /trunk/ is the best choice. This 
seems to be the latest development version.


In this case, I guess /bionic/ and /trunk/ refer to the same 
translation, although I see a slight difference under ‘Last changed’.

I'm reviving this old thread. [1] As my work on the glibc patches
is over and I'm going to apply them on Monday [2] I'd like to hear
your final opinion about importing the locale data for your languages.
Please note that there will be no visible changes in the locales
if the locale data are not changed. So far I have only one 100% positive
opinion from the Polish translator (thank you Piotr) and some attention
from Greek, [3] Serbian, [4] and Scottish Gaelic [5] translators.

Here is the list of languages from which I'd like to hear the opinion
whether to update the locale data now:

Armenian, Asturian, Belarusian, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Farsi,
Finnish, Greek, Kashubian, Lithuanian, Ossetian, Russian, Scottish Gaelic,
Silesian, Slovak, Sorbian (Upper and Lower), Ukrainian, Walloon.

For those languages which are updated the currently used "%B" and
"%b" format specifiers will automatically start displaying the
genitive case which is usually correct. There are however some
applications (e.g., calendars) which need the nominative case.
In those applications the developers and translators would have
to change it to "%OB" and "%Ob", respectively.

In case of Finnish the answer is probably "no" because their
system of generating the genitive case is simple and they have already
fixed this.

In case of Czech, Serbian and (probably) Slovak the case is controversial.
As far as I was told, in those languages the nominative case is used
normally in dates unless whole date is in a genitive case. However,
the Serbian translator suggested that this would be still useful
for their language even if this would cause changing almost all "%B"
format specifiers to "%OB". [4] Alternatively, those languages may
decide not to use this new feature.

In case of Asturian, Catalan, and Walloon: the genitive case is
created adding "de" before the month name which is changed to "d’"
if the month name starts with a vowel (e.g., "d’abril" in Catalan).
In those languages "de" would have to be removed from all format
specifiers because the correct "de"/"d’" prefix would be already
contained in "%B" format specifier.

In all other languages the change seems to be obviously correct
and expected but, again, I don't want to change anything without
asking the language communities about their opinion.

Also, CLDR suggests that the languages which do not need the
nominative/genitive case can use this feature to display the month
name capitalized when it is standalone (e.g., "Enero" in Spanish)
and lowercase when it is used in a full date (e.g., "20 de enero").
CLDR provides the different lowercase/uppercase month names for
these languages:

Albanian, Azerbaijani, Bosnian, Chechen, Galician, Italian, Kazakh,
Kyrgyz, Spanish (only Peru and Uruguay, I really don't understand why),
Turkmen, Uzbek.

Note that these lists may be incomplete.

I'm sorry for this kinda off-topic post because this is not directly
about GNOME but I was told that this list is the best place to find
a diverse community of translators. Also note that glibc is the base
library for almost all Linux software, definitely including GNOME.
See also the related glib2 bug [7]. Let's hope that the next release
of GNOME Shell and GNOME Calendar will display the dates correctly
in every language.

Now I'm confused.

The language packs provide basically translations for packages in 
"main", i.e. packages included in the standard Ubuntu distribution, 
which is Unity in Ubuntu 16.04. In 16.04 the translations for 
gnome-shell are shipped with the gnome-shell package, not with the 
language packs. So the proper way to test the language packs for 
Xenial is to use standard Ubuntu 16.04, not Ubuntu GNOME.


Hence, if it was Ubuntu GNOME you tested with, we can be pretty sure 
that the clock format issue has nothing to do with the new language 
packs.



Let me explain what I did for the test:
I opened Ubuntu Xenial, with Unity (not the gnome shell), then I checked 
xenial-proposed and restarted Ubuntu with Unity. In this situation I see 
5:05 PM instead of 17:05. I have wrongly drawn the conclusion that the 
clock uses gnome. Do you know in what module I should change this?

English (United Kingdom)
Malay
Ukrainian
Bosnian
Turkish
Occitan (post 1500)

The way to fix that (I'm talking 18.04 now) is to start translating 
gnome-user-docs upstream.


For those of you, whose languages have been translated in 
gnome-user-docs, the 17.10 deadline for ubuntu-docs is October 10.

Right.  For no particular reason here is some more info :)

When generating/updating po-file from source code, gettext
parses the
source code to recognize translatable strings.

When this process starts, there are still 0 strings, and all
translations are effectively "obsolete" for the moment.

For each string in the source code, gettext checks whether an
obsolete
(or existing) string *exactly* matches that string.  If it
does, that
string will appear as translated (and will be removed from
obsoletes).
If it does not match exactly, it will instead do a fuzzy
match, and
the string will be fuzzy.  Else the string will be untranslated.
Gettext has no idea whether a particular string was "changed"
or is
"new" - all it knows is if it resembles a previous string or not.

So the po-file is rebuilt from the old one, and most old
translations
will (normally) be matched exactly, some will be fuzzy, and
any that
were never matched will be obsolete.

A consequence of this is that if some day the programmer
reintroduces
a string, it will immediately be translated again, provided
it exactly
matches an obsolete.  (Or it could be fuzzy if it is only

Fuzzy translations

Although the documentation string freeze will be on March 16th, I 
already want to start translating untranslated strings here: [1].


In this version (Zesty) I noticed that there are untranslated strings 
which were translated in a previous version. Example: string 
#112=untranslated, but it is translated in 16.04 version.


Before I start merging these versions manually and upload them to 
Launchpad, I would like to know if there is another way to get fuzzy 
translations in a newer version based on an older one.

I have contributed to a few sections of the Server guide and would be happy to
continue. But since this is not my dayjob, having to re-ramp up the XML editing
knowledge,find some "workable" XML editor, remember the intricacies of the
edition process simply often too time consuming to participate.

I don't have any favorite and I don't think that writing things that will later
be handled by tech writers either. But it ought to be simpler to create
documents than fighting with XML.

documents in plain text and let the XML experts in our team do the XML 
editing?

gas station, etc...

Sorry to bother you again about the string "Fast Nearest Editor:". I 
still do not get it. What is the meaning of "Editor" in this string?

in your smartphone using an editor like Gedit in a fast way? I prefer 
not to translate this string until I understand the meaning of it.

In Settings, it's a switch. When user set a route, he will see the
complete route and wait for confirmation or don't see it and don't
wait.

Unity 8: power

While translating [1] I came upon the word "Power", string # 14. The 
context is: Title: Power off/Restart dialog.


Does anyone know what "Power" means here? I guess it has nothing to do 
with the power supply, but more likely with "Power On / Off".

Why Ubuntu Software Store? With the name "store" I think of a place 
where you buy things. In Xenial Ubuntu Software Center will be replaced 
by gnome-software (the name of this application is Software). I find 
this name, just Software, very confusing in documentation. Personally, I 
would go for the word "Software Center".
btw, we had the same confusion when the name Nautilus was changed to 
Files. In documentation the difference between files and Files is very 
small.

Ubuntu touch utopic/vivid

[Hannie Dumoleyn]

Recently, I noticed that quite a few strings in Ubuntu touch 'vivid' 
contained suggestions of translations, rather than approved 
translations. Although it is not a hard job to change these translations 
from suggestion to approved, I wonder what is the cause of this and can 
it be avoided in the future?

I'd say from context that it must be a picture, that contains something
the tagger can analyze, e.g. a QR code. That's how I translated it anyway.

You have done your homework ;)
We now know that quite a few of us have problems with the translation of 
strings that need more information.
Is it an idea to try and contact one or more of the developers so they 
can answer the questions that are put here on the translators list?

Perhaps David can provide us with names of whom we may contact.
Personally I think this might work better than filing bugs for each 
question. Or should we file one general bug reporting that we need more 
information on many a string?

Hey, let's show each other respect. I am sure all 
translators/translation teams do their utmost to provide Ubuntu users 
with the best translation in their language.
I find discussions on this list very useful. I really liked the 
reactions and tips I got after my question about the context of e.g. 
"at". One translator filed 2 bugs (thanks!) and the tip on consulting 
the code was very useful. I also liked this tip: have a look at 
translations into other languages. I looked at the French, Spanish and 
German translations of the string "Device Image Part", because I was not 
sure what it meant, and it helped.

So, thanks to all who took part in this discussion.

That's wrong. We don't do that at all. How can you see this?

And yes, we also make mistakes, but you can't say that we use brute

Well, well, this is a good tip. This is what I did: I copied the comment 
underneath the string I wanted more information about (Located in 
../alarm/AddAlarmPage.qml:637). I pasted it in google and found the

Thank you for your positive words, David. I have a question.
With some strings it is not clear what is meant, e.g. in the Calender 
App I see "at". There are many translations for the word "at", depending 
on what follows, e.g. at 2 o'clock, at the next event, at my place etc.

Another example: "count". Is it a verb or a noun?
It would be great if these strings could have an example or an explanation.

On LP I see: There are 2 direct members of the "Sgioba Ubuntu na

administrator status. When I look at the introduction of the owner's

The membership policy of the team you refer to is Open. You could ask
the owner to change it to Restricted or Moderated. Our team (Dutch) is
Restricted.

About testing before release to the general public. If the testing means 
delay of releasing updates, I would be in favour of release straight away.
And if updates are not released on a regular basis due to the amount of 
work it requires, perhaps those who are doing it now could publish  
step-by-step instructions so that others can help.

Hi,
You can add your own Translation Memory (TM) to the Translator Kit, but 
the number of Kb's is limited.
And yes, the translation is pretty poor. It is only usable for common 
phrases and words.
This means that, like you said, it is better to use Redmar's script to 
sort on popularity and then translate offline.

Redmar, thanks for writing the script.
The way I did the splitting so far is: open the sorted ddtp file in 
gedit, select lines 1 - 30.000 (which is about 940 Kb), copy these in a 
new document and save it. It only takes a few minutes. Then you can 
select the next 30.000 lines, and the next. Done!
Of course, using a script to split the whole file in one go is also very 
useful.

We successfully did an import for circa 40 000 French strings  (yup 
you read that right) this week-end in a mock project called DDTP 
Automation (https://translations.launchpad.net/ddtpautomation).
To keep it short, the translations from this project appear as 
suggestions in the French DDTP, and can be reviewed by actual translators.
We've started using them, and it turns out that a lot of them are 
actually useful and are speeding up the translation process a lot.

Hi Jeremy,
Although you have a point here, for translators and authors/editors of 
documentation it means extra work. Not only do we have to change the 
translation in GUI, but also in documentation (ubuntu-docs, ubuntu manual).

Having said this, I would prefer "Printers" myself.

With more reactions coming in, I think "menu bar" is the favorite now.
The explanation that this bar holds mainly menu's is a valid one. With 
the term "top bar" one refers to the location of the bar (at the top of 
the screen), while the term "menu bar" says more about the contents of 
the bar.
@manual team: if we agree on "menu bar", we can start using this term in 
Quantal.

The official Ubuntu term is "menu bar". Besides the official Ubuntu
documentation, this can be found in multiple places in System Settings
such as "Show battery status in the menu bar".

The GNOME documentation calls the similar space in GNOME Shell "top bar".

Personally, I like the "menu bar" name as the top of the screen
includes application menus, application status menus, and system
status menus. The only part that isn't a menu is the window management
buttons (close, minimize, maximize) and the app title.

Thanks for asking as clear and consistent word choices are important!

Hi,
I am glad with the reactions so far. Personally, I prefer the word "Top 
bar" because it contains both the menu and the so called notification 
area. Should people from ubuntu-docs agree that this is better than 
"menu bar", we could make "Top bar" the standard term.
The most important thing is what the majority of ubuntu users prefer to 
see, although I realize it is hard to find out.

"Top bar" is an excellent term, because it says exactly what it 
appears to be: a bar at the top of the screen. It matches our 
real-world experience through an appropriate metaphor. (All computer 
terms are metaphors.)


I realise that the new yelp standard seems to be "menu bar".

However, as the top bar contains the application title, the menu 
(sometimes), various pieces of information, and application icons such 
as Skype, Wine, Settings and Libre Office Quickstarter, I think that 
"menu bar" is insufficient and even misleading --- as, in hindsight, 
is "panel".


(A panel in real life is usually not thin, so it is clearly a 
counter-descriptive word to use.)


The question becomes, then:

Do we use the yelp standard, or do we use a new standard that makes it 
immediately obvious what we mean?


My initial thoughts are that we use the yelp standard for consistency, 
and when introducing the term, we explain that we mean the "top bar 
with the menu and other information", as well as putting it into the 
glossary. Unfortunately, that is also potentially misleading because 
several programs, including Libre Office, do not put their menu in the 
"menu bar".


So, my preferred solution would be to use something immediately 
obvious to the reader and to suggest to the yelp writers to adopt that 
standard. If we use "top bar", we could also say, "The Launcher can be 
found on the left bar."

Translation manual

Hello translators,
The precise version of the manual is ready to be translated, see [1]. 
Some of you have already started translating. For those of you who 
haven't started yet, now is the moment.
As a member of Ubuntu Dutch Translators I have prepared a few things to 
make it easier for my fellow translators. Here is what I have done (you 
may profit from my tips):


I have split the whole document in portions (chapters/sections) and 
added these to our wiki (just look at the table), see [2]
This is very convenient for those teams that have more than one 
translator working on the manual. Every translator can add his name to 
one or more chapters.


I also merged the lucid and oneiric versions with the precise version, 
giving me a merged file that I can open in a translation tool like 
Lokalize (or poedit, or your favorite tool). Here you get all the fuzzy 
translations that were not transferred to precise because these strings 
were not identical. I can copy those fuzzies to Launchpad and make the 
changes there. I can also send this merged file to my fellow translators 
if they want to use this method.


I hope this information is useful to you. If you have any questions, 
please send them to the manual mailing list.
I wish all translators good luck and I really hope we get this manual 
(LTS!) translated into many, many languages.

This is not a bad idea, but it is quite a job to translate it all. There 
is a team [1] that works on integrating tutorials from the forums into 
the community wiki at this moment, so more pages will be added soon.
At Ubuntu-nl we have a separate documentation team; it is meant for 
people who want to write documentation for the Dutch speaking users. Our 
translation team might consider to translate documents from the 
international community, we could cherrypick what we think is 
interesting for our users.

I fully understand your grumbling, but for the moment we have to make do
with what we have.
Because I firmly believe in the translation of Ubuntu Desktop Guide, I
translated most of the Oneiric version on LP. And when I click F1 on my
desktop (Oneiric), I am so proud to see that almost everything is in
Dutch now.

Sorry for my grumbling in the other mail I sent earlier today to the 
list on this subject. I know everyone is doing his best and if it is 
technically too complicated, or we lack manpower, then it is just too 
bad. I still enjoy translating the docs, and I hope our work will not be 
in vain. But yes, I am frustrated about all the extra work and I hope 
one day it will be possible in LP the fuzzies can be transferred to a 
new version.
