Yes. For the server to have a fully redundant connection it must have a second NIC to another switch and failover software in place. However, you are mistaken that anyone would normally disable STP on any trunk port, regardless of whether the switch is in the Core, Distribution, or Access layer.

No keyboard? It depends. While it's true that native UNIX workstations (Sun, HP, etc.) will run "headless", most Intel x86 boxes I have encountered require you to plug in a keyboard or the machine won't boot, regardless of the OS installed. Or is there a way around this I don't know about? --- Jo

I ran into a sort of similar problem a while back with a PIX failover. Wouldn't ping until I cleared the arp cache on the router. The ping should have repopulated the arp cache but it didn't. Note that the default arp timeout is 4 hours (unlike most hosts where it is typically about 10 minutes). -
