In linux (as far as i know) there is no "shut down and reboot in
linux" option if you configured the box to start X on bootup.
If you wish to use the command line, try pressing CTRL+ALT+ F1 (through

Why don't you boot from the CD do an upgrade and just install KDE and X.

The problem is that your X-server does not allow other users applications to
connect to it.
To solve this, you start your X-server, and type in 'xhost +' (without
quotes...), then you'll be able to start graphical application after having

type /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs status and see what it says.

Blank as in how? Is it black? Or just like a backgroundcould it be you're
in a virtual desktop area? If you're not sure try moving your cursor to the
extreme edge of the screen, does scroll around and show you icons and such?

every time I do X windows just comes up blank regardless
of the resolution of screen. The mouse works ok, it boots up
without problems. When I execute KDE I get error messages
"can't find X server"

You have to change a 3 to a 5 in the /etc/inittab file in order
to be able to start X on boot.
id:3:initdefault: should become id:5:initdefault: This changes the
runlevel.
