Restricting connection

2000-07-03 Thread sandy kho

Hi

I have a hub and spoke network. On the main office, I have a server which
remote host connects to. Is it possible to restrict each remote site to a
max of 10 connections.

Thanks

Sandy

Your IOS should be at least IP Plus.
IP only does not support NAT.

Hi all

Many thanks to those who replied here. The issue has been resolved. The

Sound like an ARP cache issue. Try clearing the ARP cache on the AS400 and
on the router.

ideas here??
Importance: High

We have upgraded the router to IOS 12.1.2T from 12.1.1aT1. The remote site
uses DLSw and IP to connect to the AS400. Some LAN users can ping he AS400,
but others can not. All related LAN configs are correct. A trace from the
router hits the destination, but from the workstation, it goes across the
WAN to the main router, but then times out. The funny thing here is that if
you ping the remote workstation that does not work from the AS400 directly,
you get a reply and then the user can work and then ping the AS400 himself.
I have checked the routes on the AS400 and all is ok -default route to the
routers ethernet port. The only change is the software upgrade, some work
was done on the AS400 and the firewall was rebuilt. I believe the issue to
be with the AS400.

Any input here is appreciated

RE: Slow Speed in 2900 Switches, Pls Help!!

2000-07-03 Thread Tope Ojo

If you are using fast Ethernet cards on those five PCs, your effective
network bandwidth when you connect the PCs to the 2900 switch, should be
100MBps, otherwise 10MBps if you're using ordinary Ethernet cards.

VLAN or Spanning tree should really not be the problem with your switch as
you did not indicate if you're using VLAN/spanning tree on the other
switches. But you may want to configure the new switch to boot straight to
packet forwarding mode (by pass all other switch modes) by following this
procedures at each port interface configuration mode:
* Spanningtree portfast.

Subject:Slow Speed in 2900 Switches, Pls Help!!

Dear friends,

I have a few questions to ask:

1) Our company Network are running at 100M speed. Now if I connect a 10M
speed 3com hub to one of the ports in cisco 2900 switches (100M speed) in
the company network, and I connect 5 pc to the 3com hub, so, the network
speed of PC is 10M divided by 5= 2M each or 10M each?

2) As the users complain about the speed, my boss asked me to use the brand
new 2900 switch (100M speed) to replace the 3com hub. So I connect 2900
switch to 2900 switch that in company network, and connect 5 Pcs to the 2900

switch, so the speed of PC should be 100M each or 100M devided by 5= 20M?

3) But user still complain about the speed, I use the ftp function to check
the speed and found the speed is only 150kb/sec= 0.15M only. I suspect
because the switches that I used is a brand new switch, I havent configure
VLAN and spanning tree protocol on the new switch to block to packet
broadcase, so the speed is slow. If this is the case, can I consult you, how

to configure VLAN and spanning tree on the new switches? Can anyone teach
me? I ever seen the configuration file of a VLAN switches, but I don't know
what command should I type to configure VLAN on 2900 switch. What is the
procedures? Please help.

Thanks in advance.

Chee Tong

RE: Pre-sales People

2000-07-03 Thread Laurent Lange

Hi guys,

I am a pre-sales engineer and here are some considerations:

1) Due to the increasing pressure of competition in the telecom market , I
don't think over-sized solutions have a chance to be sold. Did you buy the
catalyst 6000 or did you go for another solution? One company can always
conpare offers.

2) Maybe with your field experience you can help me: sometimes we put twice
the amount of flash memory in order to be able to download a second version
of the IOS remotely (for managed routers) so that we do not have ot send an
engineer on site for maintenance, which is unpractical and not
cost-effective. You also have to count with future needs.

3) In pre-sales, we do not have the time nor the opportunity to dowload an
IOS in order to check its size. We just have the recommanded Flash memory
amount of cisco. If there is a table with the exact size of every IOS
version please let me know.

Kind Regards
Laurent

Re: Fw: Can anybody suggest a solution ??

2000-07-03 Thread harora

Rajan,

You can try giving 2 static routes. One for primary link(VSAT link) and
other static route for the Dial Backup.

one static route will be for the primary link and the other static route
with higher metric(Adm. distance) will be for Dial backup.
By doing this, you don't need to make any changes in the Local Lan as well
as in the router, just you need to put one static route in the router for
dial backup with higher metric.

Checksum Error @ Copy TFTP FLASH

2000-07-03 Thread Circusnuts

I am trying to download
IOS into a 2500 & I am getting success on the TFTP Server, but the router
fails the image on the Checksum...

 Verifying checksum...
invalid (expected 0x555, computed 0x7688)

Any Ideas...  I have
swapped FLASH sticks & this did not change the outcome.  These are
Cisco FLASH sticks (not a compatibility issue).  The image is not too large
for the amount of FLASH.  The boot ROM's are of the newest model
11.0's.  I installed new RAM, but I've not reached RAM operations @ this
point in a 2500 (verifying what has just been installed into
FLASH)...

Any leads would be
greatly appreciated...

Thanks !!!

2000-07-03 Thread Evgeny Babanin

Francis,

The process you have described looks more like
"load-balancing"/"load-sharing" - Cisco LocalDirector supports that kind of
traffic management. It seems that Layer4 switches do a bit difeerent thing
(though mosty of them do load-balancing).
We use FoundryNetworks Layer 4 switches in some of our implementatios for
redirecting traffic to the WebFilter/cach engine.
The switch is able to redirect packets on per-tcp-port basis. For example we
have configured ours to redirect all http requests to the WebCache engines
and let everything else through

Re: Slow Speed in 2900 Switches, Pls Help!!

2000-07-03 Thread Luan Kim

Chee Tong,
Looks like the problem you're having is on the network card of each
computer. Make sure you use all 100mbps full-duplex NICs. You can find
out the speed and duplex mode of each NIC by doing this on your cat29xx
switch:

sh int fastethernet0/1

Hope it'll help you.

RE: how to configure VLAN on 2900 switch-how about full duplex and spanning tree

2000-07-03 Thread Luan Kim

Hi Chee Tong,
With your current "show run" below, you're only running one vlan1 on your
catalyst 2924. By default, the catalyst 2924 comes with one VLAN1. By
adding another VLAN2 in your switch, you can reduce broadcasts on your
network. Here is an example of placing port fastethernet0/6 on VLAN2:

conf t
int fastethernet0/2
switchport access vlan 2

And if you want to enable spanning-tree, first do this to see if it's
already enabled on the switch:

sh span

If it shows that it's "disabled", then you can do this to enable it:

conf t
spanning

Hope it'll help you.

Re: Static Routing or Route Maps

2000-07-03 Thread Evgeny Babanin

The only problem with HSRP is
that it can not detect link failure,as its purpose is to create router hardware
redundancy. Plus, if routers are not on the same Ethernet segment HSRP will not
work.
So the configuration can look like
that:
a) routers are on the same Ethernet segment

HSRP + floating static routes(or any IGP
between two routers - RIP for example)

            HSRP Ip address is the
default gateway for the internal routers/workstations

            Every router has
statically defined default pointing to the ISP and other default with greater AD
pointing to the neighbor REAL (Not HSRP) address.
In this case if the router
itself fails - HSRP will take care of the traffic, if link fails - router will
insert floating static route in to the routeing table an forward traffic to
another router.

b) routers are in different  locations - No
HSRP, so no hardware redundancy
only floating static routes.

""Michael L. Williams"" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote in message 8joa3u$mgm$[EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:8joa3u$mgm$[EMAIL PROTECTED]...

It seems to me using HSRP would be the best thing
to do.   That way, not only do the two routers act as redundant
links for each other, they can load balance across them.

Greetings,

I have a customer that has two routers, each
with links to ISPs. The links are statically routed. Using default routes in
each router. They would like to have one link switch over to the other if
one fails and when it comes up switch back. Is there a way to do this using
static routing still (maybe floating static routes) or can I use route-maps
OR will I have to configure a routing protocol?

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi

First you have to define VLAN 2.

In the enable mode, (not the config mode!), type the following

Vlan database
Vlan vlan2
Vtp server
Vtp domain domain_name
Apply
Exit

Then continue as specified below

2000-07-03 Thread Oz

Hmmm kinda a little lost on the TCO logic here ..
, A local TFTP server would be cheaper than the double flash cost and
would give you a place to store configs also.]

If the flash hoses you still can use the router and in some of the smaller
machines it's single bank flash , so if the flash is hosed without a tftp
server setup you have no backup at all
--
Maybe with your field experience you can help me: sometimes we put twice
the amount of flash memory in order to be able to download a second version
of the IOS remotely (for managed routers) so that we do not have ot send an
engineer on site for maintenance, which is unpractical and not
cost-effective. You also have to count with future needs.

Re: how to configure VLAN on 2900 switch-how about full duplex and spanning tree

2000-07-03 Thread Luan Kim

Hi Geoffrey,
I believe Chee Tong was asking about vlan's in a catalyst 2924 model. The
syntax you showed down below is probably for configuring a high end
cat55xx or 65xx. You CANNOT use those syntax on a catalyst 2924; they
don't exist.

MC3810

2000-07-03 Thread Hallgren, Michael

Hi,

I've got an MC3810 in stock, and I need to hook up a customer G.703 both
sides (my 7513 the other side).

On my MC3810 I've got an MFT module, so I'd like to run my link over that
port.

At a glance - and presently w/o having had console on the box - I'd go

controller e1 0
 clock source x
 mode yyy

etc. Now, what's the interface name under which I may configure IP on the
WAN side ? (The only other interface I want to use is the Ethernet one, for
LAN side.)

2000-07-03 Thread A. Geoffrey Cauchi

Hi Luan

I do not agree with you. They do exist, infact I use it on mine. It is
very strange that the VLAN is not defined in the configuration mode, but
that is the way it is. also, to see them you have to go in the vlan
database, and type show. If you have a catalyst, you can try it out!

Geoffrey.

A Bug in debug NAT ?

2000-07-03 Thread Paulo Roque

Hello World,

Question 1

I was debugging NAT on a cisco 2501 running IOS 12.0(6) and tried to
filter the output of "debug ip nat", as I usually do with other debug
output, with the command

#debug ip nat 10

The access-list 10 exists and it works.
Always I used debug with access-list I got a confirmation like "IP
packet debugging is on for access list 10" after entering the command.
With the command above get a simple confirmation like "IP NAT debugging
is on", no mention of access-list.

Is this a bug? May my access-list be wrong?

Question 2

On debugging NAT yet, I got the following output:

2w4d: NAT: i: tcp (172.16.2.1, 10008) -> (192.168.1.31, 23) [56131]
2w4d: NAT: ipnat_allocate_port: wanted 10008 got 10008
2w4d: NAT: o: tcp (192.168.1.31, 23) -> (200.189.5.21, 10008) [44840]

What means "ipnat_allocate_port: wanted 10008 got 10008" ?

Re: file can't be deleted on 3640

2000-07-03 Thread Evgeny Babanin

When you just issue "delete file" command -IOS does not actually delete
file - it marks file as deleted and hides its name (see example below -
deleted file test_file_to_delete) , so you can undelete it later,
These hidden files can consume quite a lot of memory if you do not watch for
them.
The other problem that if you copy another file into the flash, it is being
written AFTER last byte of the "deleted" file, so you end up having "black
holes" in your flash.
The only way (at least the only way I know about with 5300 and 3600) to get
rid of them is to "erase flash".

you can see your hidden files with "dir /all"

cwas-access#dir
Directory of flash:/
  1 -rw- 7575284c5300-is-mz.121-1a.T1.bin
  2 -rw- 392241mica-modem-pw.2.7.1.0.bin
16777216 bytes total (8799356 bytes free)
cwas-access#dir /all
Directory of flash:/
  1 -rw- 7575284c5300-is-mz.121-1a.T1.bin
  2 -rw- 392241mica-modem-pw.2.7.1.0.bin
  3 -rw- 10137[test_file_to_delete]

Re: how to configure VLAN on 2900 switch-how about full duplex an d spanning tree

I don't know a whole lot about VLANs, but everything
so far has said that you need a router to communicate
between VLANs.

Re: Checksum Error @ Copy TFTP FLASH

2000-07-03 Thread Brad Ellis

Ive run into the same issue...it usually means I have some bad flash in the
router. How many sticks are you using (2) or (1). It has nothing to do
with RAM nor bootroms. It is strictly a FLASH issue (at least from my
experience and what Ive seen). Where are you downloading the image from?
Maybe your image on your TFTP server is corrupt? try snagging it from
another router

I am trying to download IOS into a 2500 & I am getting success on the TFTP
Server, but the router fails the image on the Checksum...

Verifying checksum... invalid (expected 0x555, computed 0x7688)

Any Ideas... I have swapped FLASH sticks & this did not change the outcome.
These are Cisco FLASH sticks (not a compatibility issue). The image is not
too large for the amount of FLASH. The boot ROM's are of the newest model
11.0's. I installed new RAM, but I've not reached RAM operations @ this
point in a 2500 (verifying what has just been installed into FLASH)...

Any leads would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks !!!
Phil

Re: CBAC QUestion

2000-07-03 Thread Brad Ellis

Paco,

That amount of config you gave us isnt going to cut it. We'll need to see
your WAN interface configuration as well.

Also, you mentioned DMZ...are you trying to have people from the outside
come in to access your internal servers? If so, CBACs setup the way you
have wont work. You'll need an access-list to allow it in.

Re: Pre-sales People

2000-07-03 Thread Brad Ellis

Laurent,

response to 1):
Over-sized solutions can be sold VERY easily. I see it happen ALL the time!

2):
twice the amount of flash??? uh...okay you need to start buying all of
your gear from me!!! :)

3): Time or opportunity???
you dont have to actually download the code to see the amount of DRAM/FLASH
needed. it shows it to you before you download. it doesn't take that long
and it could save your customers lots of $$$. You have plenty of
opportunity, it's just called LAZINESS!!! It's really not that hard to
determine the amount of FLASH/DRAM needed. If you are worried about future
releases of code, it's not a bad idea to bump it up a little (little being
the key word). I usually go off of 12.0(7)t.. It has been a pretty stable
code for me and seems to eat up the most DRAM and FLASH. Ive only run into
problems with that version of code on 804 series routers. (Dont use it on
them!!!)

Wow, this sounds familar!!! Yeah, check your wiring. We had the same issue
at one of our client sites. Make sure the PBX is connected to the E&M

Yippeeeeee!

2000-07-03 Thread woody

Finally attained my CCNP/CCDP status. Thanks to all on the group for
answering most of my questions (and ridiculing some of my answers - hell we
all have to learn...)

I intend to study towards my CVOICE specialisation and then take the CCIE
drake late this year. Looking to comlete the CCIE lab towards the late half
of next year.

For those that will invariably ask the order of my exams was as such...

CCNA 1.0
ACRC (took it 3 times, passed on the third go - its hard)
CIT
CCDA 1.0
BCRAN (from 2.0 track)
CID
BCMSN (from 2.0 track)

This makes me a newly minted CCNP/DP 1.0. I can now finally have my life
back after being at the books for 53 weeks (from start to where I am now -
you're never actually finished).

Does anyone know what is in the CCNP/DP kit you get from Cisco? I was told
you get a silver gong and a posh vertificate. Can anyone confirm this?

Now for a nice holiday in the sun (without a Cisco book).

Regards from London.

Keith - CCNP & CCDP (this is the only time you will ever see me use letters
after my name!)

Re: how to configure VLAN on 2900 switch-how about full duplex an d spanning tree

2000-07-03 Thread Tim O'Brien

Actually, show span will show the port spanning information and if it is
enabled on the switch IOS. You will need to use the show spantree command to
show the Spanning Tree information.

RE: MC3810

2000-07-03 Thread Lisa Ridley

At my company we currently have a couple 3810's running voice over Frame
Relay with the Cisco 3810's. To go over the WAN we use interface s0:0, but
since we are using Frame Relay we actually used subinterface s0:0.1.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I've got an MC3810 in stock, and I need to hook up a customer G.703 both
sides (my 7513 the other side).

On my MC3810 I've got an MFT module, so I'd like to run my link over that
port.

At a glance - and presently w/o having had console on the box - I'd go

controller e1 0
 clock source x
 mode yyy

etc. Now, what's the interface name under which I may configure IP on the
WAN side ? (The only other interface I want to use is the Ethernet one, for
LAN side.)

Re: CID/CCDP Stories

2000-07-03 Thread woody

I think the questions in the exam where there is more than one correct
answer are there for a reason. In real life you often have many ways to
tackle a problem. All of them will work, however one of them is the most
correct (and hence best way). The exam simply reflects this.

I thought the exam was OK. I felt there was a lot of emphasis on desktop
protocols. The only gripe I have is that some of the design pricipals they
quote are now 'old fashioned' As such I suspect this exam will be replaced
soon (no beta exam is availablable so it is going to be around for another
12 months at least).

Sorry to hear you didn't pass it. Better luck next time.

Not aware of a command to allow you to see them, but you can go to cisco and
search on MIBs to locate the MIB tree for every device.

The Unix fella that works with us has a Cisco press book on their MIB trees
that he refers to regularly...

Title: Spanning Tree

Hi, all.
First of all, I just want to test if I'm able to post on the forum at all since I don't see any responses
to my first posting.
If this goes through, can someone tell me why would Spanning Tree Algorithm need a designated
port when the root port has already been established as the least cost path to the Root Bridge?
Thanks.

I agree with you some what woody. I passed the CID but there were some
questions that any of the choices would do the job and judging which one was
better than the other was not too objective.

That's great Woody. I'm glad you got your CCDP/CCNP.

Maybe you can tell me hoe to see the MIBs on a Cisco

2 questions for lab setup

2000-07-03 Thread Jack Frantz

I have been watching this list for a while and appreciate all the good info.
It helped me pass the CCNA 2 exam by a comfortable margin. Thank you all.
I have 2 lab setup questions. I need to get cables or BB60 to RJ45 adapters
for reverse telnet for a 2523 router and am wondering where to get these.
Second question is since the routers I have are token ring, can you go
direct from a token ring NIC to the token ring port on the router or do you
need to have a MAU.
I have searched the archives and have not found these answers.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Re: Messed up lab.

2000-07-03 Thread John Neiberger

I may have misunderstood your router configs and your original design, but
it looked like you have r1e0 connected to r2e0, r1s0 to r2s0, and r1s1 to
r2s1. If this isn't the case, then never mind, ignore what I said!

Regardless, you should start with connecting one link only and get it
working the way you think it should. Once you get a single link working, it
might be educational to start adding the other links and see how it affects
your routing tables. You could also try doing this with different routing
protocols to see if things behave any differently.

2000-07-03 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

Congratulations Keith,

I bet you feel great now. I remember when I got my MCSE/MCP+I down, I had a
big party in my backyard where I got so drunk that I was playing my
Stratocaster at 4 a clock in the morning outside which woke up my neighbors.

Anyway(s), I only just got my CCNA 2.0 down 1.5 months ago so it'll be a
while before I wake my neighbors up again :-)

Regarding putting the letters after your name: I have started doing that 10%
because I'm kind of proud of it :-) - BUT, 90% because I have experienced
that many times when I communicate with sales people or technical support,
they cut the crap a get straight to the point. Sales people because they
then know that I'm not a complete novice they can sell unnecessary equipment
to, and tech support because they then don't waste time explaning me things
that I already know.

Grap a Donald Duck magazine, a green Foster (they are the best) and have a
great holiday.

Re: Spanning Tree

2000-07-03 Thread Rick Guthier
Title: Spanning Tree

This is an extremely cut version but here goes:
The first step of Spanning Tree is to Elect the Root
Bridge.  Second step is that every Not Root Bridge must slect one Root
port.  The third step is where loop prevention comes in, electing
designated ports.  Every segment in a bridged network has one Designated
Port.

Root and designated ports forward traffic, non designated
block traffic.  Every active port on the root bridge is a
designated port.

Hope that's clear,

Rick.

RE: BGP - 1 DS3, 4 backup T1s, 1 ISP

2000-07-03 Thread dfoss

I have a nearly identical setup to what you're proposing except that I use
the T1's daily along with the DS3 and I'm multihomed to two providers. It
makes for some interesting tweaking but in the end it works quite well. Our
average web site load time used to be in the 5-6 second range but now with
the addition of the Localdirectors and BGP/multihoming our site load times
average close to .5 seconds but occasionally bounce up to 2-3 seconds if we
get some high-latency from one of the providers. I'm getting ready to
switch to two DS3's here in a few weeks which will simplify things a bit and
add much needed bandwidth. Anyway, I'll paste my config in here after I try
to answer your questions. My disclaimer is that I still haven't had the
time to become 'proficient' with BGP but my config works. :)

a. One thing I found was I was much better off to have the ISP send a
default route along with everything else and then weight it on my side. I
never got what I considered to be a satisfactory solution when I tried to do
it with static default routes. If you have the ISP send default routes then
you can pretty much guarantee that everything will be dynamic. I had a
couple situations where the BGP session went active but the links were fine
and data wouldn't switch over to the other links. (dynamic=good)
b. This strategy works well for me although you may want to find out where
those 4 T1's are homed to. Definately make sure they're not on the same
router as the DS3 and, although it'll close some of your load *balancing*
prospects I prefer to have the T1's split between different routers as well.
(all the redundant links don't do very well if the router that they home to
crashesI had the 'opportunity' to learn that one as well)
c. Using the T1's for every day traffic is up do you. However, since you'll
be using BGP (and I guess even without BGP) any other person who happens to
be on the same router that you have a T1 on will always go through the T1
because it's the shortest path.
d. You'll have to worry about some of that but maybe not all. Your ISP
should be able to help you get through any sticky areas.
e. Ummm, I dunno...I'm open to suggestion :) I'm partial to using the
route-cache on links with that much bandwidth but I'd welcome a more
experienced answer as well.
f. Another router shouldn't be required unless you feel the need for
hardware redundancy as well. I'm currently using a 4700M for mine which is
underpowered but I should be replacing that with a 7206 in a couple weeks.
The limitation on the 4700 was memory and backplane speed...it seemed to
have plenty leftover horsepower for the situation I put it in. Even with
high bandwidth utilization the processor stayed at a very reasonable level.
If it'll help, I'll forward a copy of my 7206 config when I get that ready.

Here's a stripped version on my confighope it helps!

2000-07-03 Thread Raymond Everson (Rainman)

h
A Root Bridge election is one function:  determine which bridge
in a collection of
bridges on a LAN and for multiple inter-connected LANS will be the
Root...
The Designated Bridge election has another, different function:
determine which
bridge, as you noted, has the least cost path TO the Root Bridge.
This notion of
having a designated bridge precludes the possibility of having simultaneously
active
bridges that are acting in parallel to each other between two LANs.
Each election process is triggered anew with topology deltas, of course,
which is
why the STA is a dynamic algorithm.
Does this explanation respond to both of your questions?  =8^)

2000-07-03 Thread Lex Luther

Hello Everyone,
One of my students has a compaq server with 2 nics, each configured on the
Cisco 6500 switch. The Trunking is 802.1Q
Both ports are configured identically but only one port works. Both ports
are to work together to achieve the throughput speed.
Spanningtree is off as it is supposed to and full duplex is turned on.

Can anyone help or have suggestions?

I intend to study towards my CVOICE specialisation and then take the CCIE
drake late this year. Looking to comlete the CCIE lab towards the late half
of next year.

CL: ya gotta believe!!

For those that will invariably ask the order of my exams was as such...

CCNA 1.0
ACRC (took it 3 times, passed on the third go - its hard)
CIT
CCDA 1.0
BCRAN (from 2.0 track)
CID
BCMSN (from 2.0 track)

This makes me a newly minted CCNP/DP 1.0. I can now finally have my life

you're never actually finished).

CL: do the math again. You're a 1.5 :-> what with all this talk about

Does anyone know what is in the CCNP/DP kit you get from Cisco? I was told
you get a silver gong and a posh vertificate. Can anyone confirm this?

CL: you'll find out about DP before I will, but all I got for NP was another
wallet card and another certificate. No tee-shirt. No watch. Hell, the
Postal Service even changed carriers recently, so the package wasn't even
delivered by that attractive woman, but some ratty guy in a scraggly beard.
;->

Now for a nice holiday in the sun (without a Cisco book).

I also say Top Down Network Design. This book is more then an exam prep. It
actually gives you the nuts and bolts needed to do the analysis behind the
design. It can be the difference between just being a 'Paper' CCDA and knowing
what is going on in design.

My 2 cents,

vlans's are good for segmenting broadcast traffic (creating more broadcast

forwarding sensitive traffic to unauthorized hosts), and for ease of

Switch backplace capacity - how much do you need?

2000-07-03 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Got another discussion question before I start work this morning ( no 4 day
holiday for me :-< ) sort of a continuation of the Brad Ellis discussion
about the SE over-engineering solutions for customers.

Cisco of late is starting to talk about backplane capacity, and in
particular expandable backplane capacity in some of their switches.

So the question I have revolves around backplane capacity and
"oversubscription" of the backplane on a switch.

For example, if I have a Cat 3524 in the closet, and pop in cards to permit
me 24 ports of 100 mbs full duplex, under what circumstances might I be
concerned about "oversubscription". If I indeed had 24 devices plugged in,
theoretically I could be pumping 4.8 gigs of data simultaneously ( less a
little for interframe gaps, and other overhead kinds of things ) that puts
me a theoretical 5 times oversubscription of this guy's backplane capacity.
On the other hand, seems to me that if I were popping that much data
simultaneously from my 24 devices I would have other problems. Even that
proverbial high speed database / transaction / e-commerce server is not
going to be running full tilt in and out all the time. Let alone user
stations, no matter how much radio they listen to, or how many avi's or CBT
videos they are watching. Those stream one way, recall.

So... what kinds of things do you consider when provisioning or
recommending? How would you approach this as a design issue?

( and no I do NOT have a customer for whom I am asking ;-> )

Re: Switch backplace capacity - how much do you need?

2000-07-03 Thread John Neiberger

I've wondered about this myself. Consider the Catalyst 4006 as an example.
It has a 60 Gbps backplane. Yes, you read that correctly...SIXTY gigabits
per second...in a chassis that can hold five modules plus a supervisor
module. Do we really *need* that much?

My guess is no, we do not need quite that much. however, nowadays I would
pick the switch with the higher backplane if I had the bucks to get it.
It's nice to know that what's under the hood can handle anything we throw at
it.

Another example: we are going to be purchasing a 6509 with 256 Gbps
backplane. Why? Because we can. No other reason. Never in a million
years will we need that much capacity on this particular switch, especially
since we'll initially only have five modules in it. But we'll have plenty
of room for growth and it's one less thing to worry about.

Besides, I'm a speed demon and as long as it's someone else's money (my
employer's) then I want the biggest, fastest, coolest stuff around.
Now, if it were MY money, that's another story. I'd be a little more
realistic about my needs. No one is going to be running every port, full
duplex, at max capacity. It will never happen, and if it does then you have
much greater problems on your hands than just the backplane capacity of your
switch.

Re: Motorola & Cisco Frame Relay

2000-07-03 Thread John Neiberger

If you mean directly connecting Cisco and Motorola equipment using frame
relay, we had that configuration running successfully at 90 locations for
quite a while. We had a Motorola FRAD connected directly to a serial port.
In that case we made the router play DCE (frame-relay intf-type dce) and
used ansi lmi (frame-relay lmi-type ansi). I don't remember it being
necessary in our configuration, but if you're having encapsulation problems,
try using ietf encapsulation (encapsulation frame-relay ietf).

Good luck!

CCDA (CCDP) 1.0 and 2.0

2000-07-03 Thread hal9001

Has anyone yet heard when the present CCDA (and for
that matter CCDP) exams are to be retired?  Cisco now lists the exams
as CCDA (or CCDP) 1.0 and 2.0 but how soon are they going to
jump.

Is it worth persuing the CCNP track and coming back
to the CCDA/CCDP when things have clarified.  From the changes made in the
CCNA/CCNP exams can anyone say if the CCDA/CCDP 2.0 exams will be radically
different to CCDA/CCDP 1.0?

Also if you mix CCDP 1.0 with the CCNP 2.0 do you
end up recertifying earlier?  Anyone in the know here as I'm trying to get
a direction and stratergy for CCDA/CCNP and eventually CCDP?

Thanks

Karl

Re: how to configure VLAN on 2900 switch-how about full duplex an d spanning tree

2000-07-03 Thread Cormac Long

A VLAN is logically the same as a physical routed LAN.
Users on the same VLAN generally belong to the same IP
subnet.
VLANs are created for the following reasons:

1. Containing the propogation of broadcasts in a
switched environment.
2. Security
3. VLANs can be more flexible than traditional routed
LANs. For example, if a user needs to move from one
VLAN to another (e.g employee changing departments)
their PC can move to that VLAN by configuring the
switch port to be in the appropriate VLAN. There is no
need for re-patching.

Re: Static Routing or Route Maps

2000-07-03 Thread Cormac Long

There are a couple of issues to clarify here:

1. If the 2 routers are not on the same LAN, HSRP is
irrelevant (as has been pointed out below).
2. If on the same LAN HSRP can work well because it IS
capable of detecting WAN link failure (you can
configure it to "track" the WAN interfaces). You can
also use the preempt feature to ensure that the
preferable link will always get used if it is
available.
3. Are these static routes being redistributed into a
dynamic routing protocol? If they are then you
configure the redistribution metric to bias one over
the other.
4. In any case running a dynamic routing protocol to
an ISP is usually not a good idea (security, plus
co-ordination with the ISP).

RE: Switch backplace capacity - how much do you need?

2000-07-03 Thread Croyle, James

Also, just a quick point, you never get 100Mbps (or 200Mbps full duplex)
throughput, only about what... 65% max anyway? So you can figure that into
your calculation too. Also, you don't think you'll ever run Gigabit
Ethernet to the desktop with some new and improved NICs? Might be sooner
than you think. We actually are doing that with some servers, in addition
to ultrawide SCSI to an EMC.
Not sure how you post to the list, so I sent to you also just in case. :-P

It will never happen, and if it does then you have
much greater problems on your hands than just the backplane capacity of your
switch.

Re: Static Routing or Route Maps

2000-07-03 Thread Kenny Sallee

If you have 2 links, why not utilize them the best you can? Here's what I
would do:

1.) Run HSRP on the routers inside interfaces. Configure it to track the
serial interfaces on both routers.
2.) Run BGP and learn FULL internet routing table on both routers. Run a
cross over cable between the routers and do IBGP on them. This will help
protect against an upstream ISP failure or just a plain BGP failure with one
of the ISP. HSRP can only track a physical outage. This will also allow,
dynamically, the routers to choose which ISP to use for OUTBOUND traffic.
If one ISP is down, router 2 will still have the full route table from r1
via iBGP.
3.) Make sure your networks are both be routed to the ISPs. You can telnet
to route-server.cerf.net and see if they are. By advertising to both, they
will both advertise for you, and the world will take the path with the
shortest AS_PATH attribute coming to you.
4.) Now you have redundancy outbound/inbound and a backup strategy that is
dynamic.

It's a little more complicated than that but it should give you an idea.

Hello all,

I am thinking about the ways that you can connect routers to other AS if you
are not using BGP? Anybody knows the answer, please reply me.

Thanks!

According to the linux folks, you still don't. in fact many of them delight
in bragging how they run their enterprises on some old 486 pc. Pretty soon,
they say, you can throw out those nasty old cisco routers and use linux
boxes of 486 pc's as routers too. :->

( ok. I know. I just threw some more gasoline on the fire. I just started
another war.  :->  )

Re: Slow Speed in 2900 Switches, Pls Help!!

2000-07-03 Thread Stephen Skinner

JEES.you have been given a load of crap advise..!!

FIRST lets start at the begininng .you have 5 pc`s which are connected
to your switch .they , i take it are 100 meg cards ...make sure they are
in HALF DUPLEX(send and recieve on the same cable) NOT... FULL DUPLEX
(send and recieve on TWO different CABLES)
(THE WAY YOU GET 20/200 MEG IS YOU TRUNK (2 THATS 2) CABLES TOGETHER USING
TWO PORTS... ANYONE TELLS YOU OTHER WISE IS A FOOL)in my experience you
should make sure the pc cards are set to this ...

SECOND...are you connecting to your main link at 100 meg if your using
cat 5 cabling and the main router is more than 10 meters away IR-REGARDLES
of what the switch says ...you wont be getting it...

THIRD...FORGET about spanning tree, trunking and all that crap ...START at
the beginning (I`M NO CCIE BUT I HAVE BEEN ROUND LONG ENOUGH TO KNOW THAT
YOU DON`T THROW THE CAR AWAY WHEN A CAM BELT GOES)
95% of your problems will be simple you just need to start at the
begining...all the info you have been given is from PAPER CCNP/A`S
IF THEY KNEW WHAT THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT YOU WOULD HAVE IT FIXED BY
NOW!

I have seen this and the problem was at the server side. The NICs were
configured with one as fall-back redundancy that would only go active if the
first one failed. Actually calling this a problem is wrong. The system is
working as it was configured.

Have someone look at the NIC stats and see if one has very little or no
traffic. If that is so, the card configuration needs to be worked on if he
needs to have both running at the same time. That is NOS dependent.

NTP Authentication again!

2000-07-03 Thread Kent

Hi guys,

I remember while ago we talked about NTP with
authentication, I configured some routers last Friday
with "ntp server " and authentication. I did not
work in the morning of last Friday, I waited till the
afternoon, same thing, I thought I was wrong
somewhere, but as it was not big issue for the client,
I was not worried about it at all.

This morning, I noticed, all the routers are having
the right time, but when I use 'sh ntp association',
and 'show ntp statu', I found that they are not
sychcronized with the ntp master.

I will dig this when I have time.

Thanks

Kent

BCMSN What Additional Switches Must One Know

2000-07-03 Thread Kari Nurdin

Hi

I am preparing to take the BCMSN exam. As many of you I am using
material catered for the CLSC.
Besides knowing the Cat. 1900, 2820, 3000 and 5000 series switches,
what new switches should one know prior to taking the BSMSN. I looked at
the Outline and Preparation Guild for the BSMSN, however, it makes no
mention of any particular series of switches.

Rate-limiting

2000-07-03 Thread Russ Kreigh

Hi all I posted a question a while back asking how to limit the maximum
speed of an IP address. Well I have kinda got something working that does do
that, but it limits everything!

access-list 5 permit 10.1.1.2
access-list 5 deny any

Ethernet 0
ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
ip address 10.1.2.1 255.255.255.0 secondary
rate-limit input access-group 5 128000 128000 128000 conform-action transmit
exceed-action drop
rate-limit output access-group 5 128000 128000 128000 conform-action
transmit exceed-action drop

I want this configuration to limit the bandwidth of IP address 10.1.1.2 to
128k which it does, but it limits everything else also.

Any thoughts on this?

Re: Switch backplace capacity - how much do you need?

2000-07-03 Thread McCormick, Corey
Title: Re: Switch backplace capacity - how much do you need?

I have noticed that these numbers are actually not necessarily accurate either.

The Catalyst 6509 has a backplane quoted as having 256Mb/sec, 128Mb/sec, 32Mb/sec and 16Mb/sec.  Which is true?  Sort of they all are, from my current information.  There are only empty traces right now for the 256G backplane.  These new switch fabric/line cards are not yet shipping and the current ones *do not touch* those high speed traces.  It will require at least one of the two center slots to be empty for the fabric and some (as yet unknown 0-16) number of ports on the switch fabric cards.  So all you have now is the 16G Full Duplex which is still quite a bit, but definitely not 256G (or even 128G Full Duplex ;-)  ).

The current backplane is quoted as either 32G total or 16G Full duplex.  Kind of like the Marketing version of Fast Etherchannel being 200Mb/per link (or 100Mb Full Duplex).  There are other issues with it's Jumbo frame support as well, but that is another story...

BTW, I there are some Cisco docs that re-badge the Cat5500 backplane as a 7.2G (3 x 1.2G *Full Duplex*)...  Is this really the case?

I still think Cisco makes some great stuff, but you have to dig more since marketing is replacing truthfulness everywhere.  I believe Cisco is not alone in this...  I am thankful we have access to a few excellent Cisco folks to help us keep this straight as the big company does not do it well anymore.

Take care,

Corey McCormick

Ummm... Nope.

The twisted pair cables actually have four pairs, of which two are used.
One pair is for receiving and one is for transmitting. If the PC is
connected directly to a switch, it can and should be set to full-duplex
on both ends.

This would be true for Fast Etherchannel. However, it is possible to have
wire-speed (100 mbps) in and wire-speed out simultaneously on one cable
full-duplex.

> SECOND...are you connecting to your main link at 100 meg if your using

Sure you will. You can go 100 meters with twisted pair wire, further with
fiber.

You might want to ease up on the CapsLock, as much of what you state is
in error. Shouting won't make you correct, just loud.

It doesn't quite work that way. With a hub, any port transmitting at a
given instant will be sending to all of the other ports at 10 Mbps. They
have to take turns. If two try to transmit at the same time there will
be a collision and a random delay, then retry.

A switch is capable of making smarter decisions than a hub as far as
directing traffic, and when one port is transmitting will direct the
output to only the port that needs to listen. With a switch, PC A can
be sending to PC B at the same time that PC C is sending to PC D.

If you have only one connection between the two switches, then the total
traffic between devices connected to the different switches is limited to
100 Mbps. It would be a good idea to confirm that the link between the
switches is set to 100 Mbps, full duplex on both ends. The previous
response is incorrect, full-duplex can and will work between two switches
with a single cable.

If all of the devices are on the same network, you shouldn't need to worry
about VLANs. Spanning-tree will happen automatically, and just delays the
time it takes for a port to go active when a device is first plugged in for
about 50 seconds.

This FTP test, is it to a server on your local network or out on the
Internet somewhere?

RE: FastEtherchannel using Compaq Servers

2000-07-03 Thread Martin Kowalewski

Did you set the native VLAN? 802.1q requires the setup of a native VLAN.

Bert

Re: Slow Speed in 2900 Switches, Pls Help!!

2000-07-03 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

A hub provides shared bandwidth, so in your first example, the five
stations are sharing 10 Mbps. How much of the 10 Mbps they each get depends
on the traffic load that they generate, the timing of their packets, etc.

You plan to move to a switch. A switch provides dedicated bandwidth to each
port on the switch. In your example, you said that you are using 100 Mbps,
so each port on the switch provides 100 Mbps.

Half-duplex means that a station cannot send and receive at the same time.
If an Ethernet station on a twisted pair cable receives on its receive pair
while it is sending on its send pair, that is considered a collision.

If you are connecting just a single station to the switch port, then you
can configure the switch port and the station for full duplex. This allows
the switch port and the end station to send at the same time. They no
longer consider receiving while sending a collision event. Many people call
this 200 Mbps since both stations can theoretically send 100 Mbps at the
same time.

I suggest you read the Ethernet section in any of the many good CCNA or
CCDA books. As the other responder said, you may want to hold off on
learning about spanning tree, VLANs, trunking, etc., for now. You should
focus on basic Ethernet functionality. Also learn more about the switch
commands you can use to measure broadcast traffic, so you can determine if
that really is your problem or not.

When measuring FTP throughput, keep in mind that the results may be in
Bytes per second, so multiply by 8 to get bits per second. Also, FTP
throughput is application-layer throughput and includes header overhead
(IP, TCP and FTP), delay at the client and server side, acknowledgement
time, etc. You should not expect application-layer throughput to equal more
than about 30 or 40 percent of raw data-link-layer capacity.

As far as troubleshooting slow speed is concerned, we would need lots more
data to actually help you, but by using a protocol analyzer you can often
determine if it's the network that is slow, the server, or the client. It's
usually not the network! Proving this may require some advanced techniques
that you could learn in a Sniffer class though
