Re: what is this match statement matching?

2000-08-23 Thread JEK

Your match ip address 1 is allowing all traffic thru hence the 0.0.0.0 and
the
match ip next-hop 2 where the ip address of 172.16.20.1 is the next-hop
router or as this seems the default-gateway on this configuration.Hope
this helps.

Re: Perfomance prob with Router-Router IPSEC tunnel..

2000-08-23 Thread JEK

Nandu,

From what your saying is that
your using your tunnel as the encrypt/decrypt point of access
for the VPN internal connection.First question;
is why are you wanting to run a VPN thru a
leased line on an internal network.Second; is
all traffic on the leased line being encrypted.
What size of lease line are your working with
<< 56 / 64 / FR / T1 / ISDN ? >>.You can
use
an IPSec encrypted VPN without running thru
a tunnel interface. All you have to do is
to setup your access-list properly.Send me your config's offline; along with the
Size of the Circuit
and I'll work with you on going around the
tunnel-to-tunnel config.Thanks.

Re: telnet via AUX port

2000-08-23 Thread Rodgers Moore

This is one of those fun ones. Each router listens for the break sequence
and forwards the second, then resets to listening again.

So when you type the break sequence: Ctrl-Shift-6

1st gets stopped at R1 (R1 looks for 'x')
2nd passed by R1 & gets stopped at R2 (R2 looks for 'x')
3rd gets stopped at R1 (R1 looks for 'x')
4th passed by R1 & R2, gets stopped at R3 (R3 looks for 'x')
5th gets stopped at R1 (R1 looks for 'x')
6th passed by R1 & gets stopped at R2 (R2 looks for 'x')
7th gets stopped at R1 (R1 looks for 'x')
8th passed by R1 & R2 & R3, gets stopped at R4 (R4 looks for 'x')
etc. etc. etc.

To break from the 2514 (R3) to the 2503 (R2) you would type: Ctrl-Shift-6,
Ctrl-Shift-6, x

Re: Router for play @ home

2000-08-23 Thread Norman Wozniak

I say look for a 1605 on ebay. They have 2 ethernet ports, so it can
actually be used in a practical scenario instead of just to play with. You
should be able to find one relatively cheap on ebay. Or, if you can't find a
1605, many sellers offer 2 2501's in a bundle. Then just run them back to
back behind your cable modem.

cable modem
|
| ethernet
|
cisco 2501
|
| T1 or serial connection
|
cisco 2501
|
| ethernet
|
your home lan

In either of those 2 situations, you can setup the cisco w/ nat, packet
filtering, firewalling, etc. But as far as cisco routers go, a few hundred
bucks is a small investment if you plan on pursuing a career involving cisco
gear. You won't regret it. :)

Legacy???

Being from Denmark sometimes makes it harder to understand what in the world
they are talking about in the books, and here's an example where I am not
sure what they mean because I do not understand the full meaning of the word
"legacy" even though I have looked it up in a dictionary.

There's a note that reads "Rotary groups are considered legacy DDR".

What exactly does that mean?

The reason Cisco Wants an MCSE 2000 is due to the fact that the CCM version

Not 1 answer FW: Load Balancing On 2503 Serial Ports

2000-08-23 Thread Swart Douwe

Guys and Gals.

I didnt receive one response to this.is this because it is not possible,
or just too difficult to implement

Any response would be appreciated.

Thanks

Douwe

Gday everyone

Setting up a lab, and following on from my last email about the maximum
throughput using a DCE-DTE cable on a serial port achieving a maximum of
4mbps. (DCE serial port set with clockrate 400)

Nowobviously the speed is a little slow, so I decided to buy a second
cable to hook up to the second serial port on both routers and do a little
load balancing.

Having never configured load balancing in this manner before, I went looking
through the cisco site to see what I could find. The only thing I could
find was "Multilink Via Virtual Template on 2 Serial Interfaces". I guess
ultimately this will achieve what I am after, but it not the same method of
configuring that I would have used.

Has anyone had any success with loadbalancing 2 serial ports for a lab
environment?

I guess there are a number of issues that come to mind...and if any of you
have any thoughts, experience, or good sites that I could visit, I would be
grateful.

Do I need to setup a lookback address for each router, and assign each
serial port to use ip unnumbered and the ip address of the loopback? Is
this the best way to get the load balancing to work?

I want permanent load balancing so that the full 8mb is permanently
available to all traffic. Obviously I need to set the load threshold to 0
or 1 (I cant quite recall which one)?

If I allocate an IP address to each interface, and I am using static
routing...do I need to reallocate the routes to the new interface?

Sorry if some of these questions seem obscure, but you know how it is when
sometimes you are looking so closely at something that you fail to see the
bigger picture.

Thanks in advance for your time and effort

Douwe

Hello people!

Not exactly a cert question, but it applies. I will soon be getting cable
intenet access at the house, and would like to purchase a cisco router to
play with behind the cable modem. What series router should I be looking at,
just to learn the ios and play around with. I am working on my CCNA, and
realize a physical router is not necessary, but I will be progressing
upwards and would like the experience. I looked at the 924 cable
modem/router cisco sells, and the $899 price tag was a little much for
play-time! Thanks for the input.

RE: How to pronounce? router

2000-08-23 Thread William E Gragido

Its correct pronunciation is phonetically akin to 'route-ers' with 'route'
yielding an 'ou' sound much like in the word Ouch.

what he is saying, is the Catalyst has modules, like a 8 port module for
example, which behaves like a hub with an uplink to a single switch
port. It is the exact same thing in fact as having a hub connected to a
single switch port, except the hub is inside the switch. Since
"normal" switches never had this (maybe they pioneered it), they are
saying they are different in that respect.

Now of days this is of course more and more common and people refer to
this as "switching hubs".

It would all be of the same VLAN since its the same port essentially.

Pix VPN

2000-08-23 Thread Price, Jamie
Title: Pix VPN

Hi Guys,

Although the Pix is not on the R&S lab i am hoping someone can help me out.

I want to set up a Pix to Pix VPN (I admit this is a real lifer - I have a client that wants a VPN between Pixs to their client).  I want traffic from all hosts on site A to be encrypted when destined for specific hosts at site B and vice versa, traffic from all hosts on site B to be encrypted when destined for specific hosts on site A.  I'm having a bit of a blockage though when trying to prepare for the upcoming configs.  I've looked all over CCO but can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for.

According to the docs, when you create tha access-list used for determing traffic to be encrypted, it is formed as thus:

The source address range (or host if desired) is derived from the network attached to the inside interface of the local Pix.

The destination address range (or host) is derived from the network attached to the inside interface of the remote Pix.

This is the important question.

What if you don't want to reveal your internal range to the remote site (assume the other end is untrusted and you are limiting their inbound traffic to one port/one host via a conduit).  Can you specify the destination in your access-list as the external (statically translated) address that is configured within the Pix for that host??

Also, and this is not the case in this scenario but a spin off question, what if both sites are running the same internal ranges are non-routable and overlapping - i.e. they both are using 10.1.1.x internally (I realize there are some configuration steps for overlapping addresses within IOS NAT but can the same be applied to a Pix??).  I guess I'm having problems comprehending how a packet can cross the Internet to a private nonroutable address.  Or am I on the wrong track - is maybe all traffic destined for that range actually sent to the peer address which is the external address of the Pix - but then wouldn't that cause a problem if both internal ranges were the same?

Hopefully someone can help out - but be warned, I'm keen to get a good grasp on this so the thread may drag out :)  Reply to me personally if you like rather than to the group.

Thanks

Jamie

Dear Group,

At http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/767/spcl/iptel/req.html

one of the CCNAs has to be MCSE 2000.

Can anyone say how the Microsoft cert fits into IP Telephony?

I might have thought for IPSec and maybe VPN but I'm not up on how Win2000
relates to IP Tel.

I'm a MCSE 3.51/4.0 so I'll probably do the 2000 thing but I was hoping to
forego further M$ certs and carry on with more Cisco stuff.

Any ideas on why Cisco wants you to have a M$ cert??

2000-08-23 Thread Kevin Wigle

What month are you using??

I have installed July 2000 with just a little bit of fuss.

I had the same error.

The software installs to the default c:\cisco

First perform an uninstall of all cco software.

Then delete the entire c:\cisco directory.

Reboot.

Re-install.

That worked for me.

Waste of money, a person that has 13K to spend on training would be wise to
invest in books and equipment rather than those book camp style no

RE: Shared port bandwidth on different VLANs????

2000-08-23 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

I think he simply means that because the module acts like a HUB, all packets
are broadcasted out to all ports of the module (except for the port they
came from) and thus are sharing the same network and therefore decreases the
bandwidth if there's a lot of traffic.

I don't get stuck very often in a Cisco book, but this doesn't make sense.
Page 126 of Cisco LAN Switching states:

"Although each port of a Catalyst behaves like a port on a bridge, there is
an exception. The Catalyst family has group switch modules where ports on
the module behave like a shared hub. When devices atach to ports on this
module, they share bandwidth like a legacy network. Use this module when
you have high density requirements, and where the devices have low bandwidth
requirements, yet need connectivity to a VLAN."

Does he mean different VLANs configured on this module share bandwidth? If
he is saying the same VLAN shares, then that is no different than any other
switch. Another note, this book is the most unclear of any (I have read
about 8) Cisco book I have come across yet. Be that as it may, please
provide any insight, especially if you have the book and can refer to the

RE: Router for play @ home

2000-08-23 Thread Taylor, Don

I made the mistake of getting a 924 before checking with my cable company.
Do that first to a) make sure your equipment will actually work with their
network (they're going to have to reprovision your circuit anyway, so you
may as well call them first), and b) make sure they allow you to have your
own equipment on their circuit. I found out, to my dismay, that I am in a
lease-only area right now, i.e. I hafta use their crappy Motorola modem. =(

Re: SNA & CISCO Certification

2000-08-23 Thread niallr

Yup. Took'em, passed'em. Relied upon George Sackett's Internetworking SNA book
and the documentation CD as well as some AS/400 network administration that I
did at a previous employer. Not incredibly tough exams, and where objectives
are available they are fairly accurate. Consider using the blueprint for the
CCIE SNA/IP as your guide and you will be more than prepared if you know that
material.

FRAME RELAY PROBLEM

2000-08-23 Thread Peter Gray

I have got a problem with FR Config Running OSPF. Router A & B are connected
to C & D over FR PVC but they don't have to talk to each ther. It means A
connected to C & D and B is also connected to C & D. I am using FR
Subinterfaces with pt-to-pt. What is happening that sometime I am able to
ping to router C & router D subinterfaces from router A but sometimes i
don't get any response. I am even unable to ping sub-intf of Routers from
within the routers.
See sample config of one of the routers that i have:
interface Serial0
no ip address
ip directed-broadcast
encapsulation frame-relay
ip ospf network broadcast
no ip mroute-cache
!
interface Serial0.1 point-to-point
ip address 131.18.19.185 255.255.255.252
ip directed-broadcast
ip ospf network broadcast
frame-relay interface-dlci 310
!
interface Serial0.2 point-to-point
ip address 131.18.19.189 255.255.255.252
ip directed-broadcast
ip ospf network broadcast
frame-relay interface-dlci 210

This is config of router B connected to C & D and subintf of C &D are on
same subnet as subintf 0.1 and 0.2 on this router.
Is pt-to-pt with sub-intf OK for this scenario?

Any suggestions... What is the possible cause of problem?? Why I am even
unable to ping local subintface from within the router??

Thanks..

RE: UPLOADING CONFIGURATION TO REMOTE ROUTER USING TFTP

2000-08-23 Thread Quadri, Habeeb

I got a scenario that kinda fits into similar area.

I got a brand new LS1010 out of the box with ASP, CAM/PAM modules with no
memory cards. I took a 16 Mb flash card from 7513 & erased everything on it.
Connected laptop with tftp server from Wierd solutions to ethernet port of
the ASP module with crossover cable. When i power on the LS1010 it comes up
in ROMMON mode. My question is how can i get the ios image from tftp server
to flash card and boot the ASP.
Although i can dnload the ios image using a production 7513 on flash card
but i think what i have should be sufficient to the get LS1010 working.

Appreciate any ideas.

RE: $13,300 for 5 months

2000-08-23 Thread David Jones

Everything I have done, has been self study and I always pass my tests, not
with flying colors, but I do it. I wouldn't mind classroom training simply
because of time restraints. I have a family and between work and home, I
get very little time to study. It typically takes me a month to a month and
a half to study enough to pass a test. And that's staying up late every
night with my wife going to bed without me.

My $.02

NO training is worth the money. NONE. Period.

BUT - many people cannot do it on thier own - they need training, and so
they must pay the price. In any given class, you have a collection of people

who cannot do it alone (and one or two who probably could have if they had
the confidence). Out of those, there are several who not only cannot do it
alone, they simply cannot do it. And they won't do it. AND they will blame
it on the training center. No doubt about it.

Some training centers are excellent and others are, well... not excellent.
The same can be said of the students. I never recommend training to people,
only self study. But if you lack the confidence to do it on your own,
training might be the answer. It is a crapshoot... some win, many lose.

One thing is certain though, if they do nothing then they will certainly get

nothing in return.

My 2 cents...

RE: Router for play @ home

7513 are nice, but I have more fun with my 12000 GSR's. I would rather have
OC12, but the OC3 connections are fast enough.

Re: Reverse telnet definition

2000-08-23 Thread Oz

When you are on a terminal (pc) telnetted to a router the Terminal is
sending out the the info and recieving the replies fron the async side of
the terminal
async is between the user and the term server
pC >async>terminal server> LAN > router

Where as when using revese telnet aka Cisco the info is sent to the async
side after the terninal server
async is now between the term server and the router
the other side of the network so I GUESS this is why they say reverse
PC >LAN>terminal server > Async> router

Does this make sense ???

RE: $13,300 for 5 months

2000-08-23 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

Just a note:

The MCSE is focused on system administration in a lan/wan environment. BUT
note that one of the four core exams (I am refering to the MCSE 4.0 track)
is Networking Essentials, and one of the two electives that many takes
(including me) is TCP/IP. That means that many MCSE's education is about
66.666% system administration and 33.333% networking.

When I studied for CCNA 2.0 I realized how much material I was reading for
the second time, since much of it is included in Networking Essentials and
MS TCP/IP. If I had known that a couple of years ago, I would have studied
for CCNA right after my TCP/IP, but then I would have had the CCNA 1.0
instead of the CCNA 2.0 now.

There is a very fine line between what you call networking and system
administration.
In today's day and age, it is very good and very important to know an OS
well, as well

In my opinion, knowing NT or 2000 server well is very much an important part

RE: UPLOADING CONFIGURATION TO REMOTE ROUTER USING TFTP

2000-08-23 Thread Jorge Rodriguez

Yes, you should be able to. You can do it from either end, You can pull the
image from the remote site as long you're routing both networks, and
download/upload from your tftp server.

commands:
For running config image

router#copy tftp runing
Host or network configuration file [host]? network
Address of remote host [0.0.0.0 TFTPserver]?
Name of configuration file [network-confg]? Imagefilename

for startup config image
router#copy tftp startup
Host or network configuration file [host]? network
Address of remote host [0.0.0.0 TFTPserver]?
Name of configuration file [network-confg]? Imagefilename

Hope this helps

Have your friend go to MetroWide Learning Center in Newark, NJ. They have
great LAN/WAN course, and a CCIE that teaches the Cisco router courses,
which have hands on labs, and unlimited lab use even after you finish with
the class. They are adding VoIP, Security, and other stuff. All that for
half of what he is going to spend at Chubbs.

My 2 cents...

ones left were the CCDA shirts, and they may be gone

have none. What I really want is the CCIE leather
jacket, which Cisco should continue to sell on their

Agreed, IMHO the role of a network administrator in coming years is going to
be primarily to manage application performance across the network. This
will require a solid understanding of the servers and services that support

RE: $13,300 for 5 months

2000-08-23 Thread Dale Holmes

RE: $13,300 for 5 months

2000-08-23 Thread Marshal Schoener

There is a very fine line between what you call networking and system
administration.
In today's day and age, it is very good and very important to know an OS
well, as well
as Cisco IOS skills.
In my opinion, knowing NT or 2000 server well is very much an important part
of networking :-)

I would spend $3500 on equipment. Study by himself, than go to the training
if he needs it for that course.
Remember another thing, MCSE is not networking. It is system administration.

Re: Re: Cisco Career Certification T-Shirt Received

2000-08-23 Thread Frank Z

Last I heard, Cisco had ran out of them. The only
ones left were the CCDA shirts, and they may be gone
by now. I really wanted my NP/DP shirts, but alas, I
have none. What I really want is the CCIE leather
jacket, which Cisco should continue to sell on their
website to CCIEs. I'll be rather miffed if I cannot
buy one one day. ;)

Networkers Acapulco

2000-08-23 Thread RD

Anyone else contemplating attending the Networkers Acapulco 2000?

I missed the two that were held in the US because our CCIE's went to those
events and someone had to be left "watching the store".

I figure this crowd will be smaller and maybe the conference will actually
be better because of the smaller crowds.

Any one? Any one? Bueller?

FRAME RELAY/ OSPF PROBLEM

2000-08-23 Thread Peter Gray

I have got a problem with FR Config Running OSPF. Router A & B are connected
to C & D over FR PVC but they don't have to talk to each other. It means A
connected to C & D and B is also connected to C & D. I am using FR
Subinterfaces with pt-to-pt. What is happening that sometime I am able to
ping to router C & router D subinterfaces from router A but sometimes i
don't get any response. I am even unable to ping sub-intf of Routers from
within the routers.
See sample config of one of the routers that i have:
interface Serial0
no ip address
ip directed-broadcast
encapsulation frame-relay
ip ospf network broadcast
no ip mroute-cache
!
interface Serial0.1 point-to-point
ip address 131.18.19.185 255.255.255.252
ip directed-broadcast
ip ospf network broadcast
frame-relay interface-dlci 310
!
interface Serial0.2 point-to-point
ip address 131.18.19.189 255.255.255.252
ip directed-broadcast
ip ospf network broadcast
frame-relay interface-dlci 210

This is config of router B connected to C & D and subintf of C &D are on
same subnet as subintf 0.1 and 0.2 on this router.
Is pt-to-pt with sub-intf OK for this scenario?

Any suggestions... What is the possible cause of problem?? Why I am even
unable to ping local subintface from within the router??

Thanks..

This is going to evoke some flames, especially if The Chubb Institute is
reading this... So send them privately as to not waste bandwidth. I went to
The Chubb Institute last year from February to June, and during that period,
got my MSCE, CNA, A+, and did the CCNA on my own. Out of the 15 in my
class, 6 of us got the whole MSCE, and no one got all the certs I did. I
gave the instructor the notes that I had gathered from my reading and taking
the test. Unless The Chubb Institute has changed their curriculum, there is
no CCNA course there. I would have him verify that the person he talked
with knows the difference between CCNA, and CNA. In addition, if I had it
over, I would have taken my 10K and bought 3 computers, NT Server, NT
Workstation, Win 95, and a router and switch or two (low end) and done it
all myself. Hindsight is 20/20 they say. If he is a self starter, and not
afraid to talk to/ask others when he is stuck, he will get an immesurable
amount of better experience from building it himself and doing the learning.
I have not recommended anyone of my collegues to attend Chubb either full or
part time, that should say something.

In the big picture $13,500/- is nothing. Chubb has a good reputation
specially in the NJ area and they have placement services too.

Disclaimer: Never went to Chubb have no vested interest but know a few folks

Hi,

Ask you friend to check out http://www.microskills.net website if they have
office where he lived. They have similar "package" training that cover A+,
Network+, CNE, MCSE, CCNA for people that want to get into networking since
they start from ground up. And their cost is starting around 12K to
"all-in-one" package is around 16K ( Ouch ! ). But, I heard they have a very
good labs setup that where you have hand-on experiences.

BTW, is anyone have experience or comment about Microskills classess ?

Re: RE: $13,300 for 5 months

2000-08-23 Thread analogkid01

I don't know if I'd spend $13k on classes...it depends on what other resources you
have at your disposal. If you work with the equipment every day and will have ample
opportunity to reinforce what you were exposed to in the classroom, then go ahead and
take the classes.

However, a better option might be to buy a couple of PCs and a couple of routers, and
a whole stack of books with lots of labs and examples. Then just plug all your toys
together, and sit and read. :-) Once you're done with the MCSE, you could then
install Linux on those PCs, and then Novell, and then... :-)

Best of luck -

To all,

I have a friend who wants to get into networking. He plans on taking a 5
month networking course at CHUBBS. I told him he's crazy. He said that they
will give him the skills he need to PASS 4 Microsoft exam(MCSE) and CCNA. I
told him that impossible, especially for $13,500. He lives in the New

one have any suggestion? He has $13,500 to spend.

this is your port # for the aux. Then telnet to the address /port of the

RE: Adding HW to PIX

2000-08-23 Thread Craig Johnson

Unofficially, the PIX uses Intel Etherexpress PRO/100 NIC's, which I would
suspect that the PIX's IOS would only have drivers for this card. To be
completely sure, the only sure fire solution would be to take the NIC out of
the PIX, put it into a Windows 2000 machine, and see what it autodetects the
NIC as (Win98 would probably work, but the autodetection on 2000 is much
better IMHO). It is doubtful a 3com NIC would work. Remember, the PIX
(well, the 520 anyways) is just an Intel AL440LX motherboard with a Pentium
II processor. (Or a VS440FX motherboard with a Pentium Pro processor). HTH.

Hi,

The PIX system we have only has the inside and outside NICs, which are
default. If I were buy a 3Com card off the self and use it to connect to
the DMZ, would that effect PIX in anyway. Would PIX recognize this new
network HW? Is it something that I have to buy only from Cisco? The
difference
in cost is big $$$. Any advice or exprience appreciated.

Re: BCRAN EXAM INFO

2000-08-23 Thread Daniel Boutet

Passing mark is 709 for me anyway. I wrote in a week or so ago. As for how
hard it is, well it is relative with your experience I guess. I wrote over
20 exams
(microsoft, novell, citrix, A+, and cisco) and I would say that it is up in
the 8 region on a scale of 10.

A good thing that I was not enough prepare for was the kind of series
model. Make sure you know the difference between them.
(700/800/1600/2500/3600/5X00 and even a question on 1 and 12000).

They provide you with about 80 commands and you have to rewrite the correct
one.
Know your ISDN inside and out! (dialer, backup, ppp etc)
A few FR/X25 (PAD, x121 and so on)
Know your modem/reverse telnet/AT commands
Compress, aaa and NAT/PAT briefly cover.

Hope this helps and good luck!

RE: OT---Getting that review

2000-08-23 Thread Roger Dellaca

Whether I am asking for a raise or not, I have formed the habit of doing this for my
boss & asking it of my employees. I do the same for my goals for the next year. And
although I put it in the file annually, I update it & tell my employees to update
theirs regularly, maybe every 3 months, or you'll forget what you've done. And
everyone else will forget at least as fast as you do.

>>> "Coker, Michael" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 08/23 11:14 AM >>>
Documentation!

Your boss is probably responsible for many people. So when you go and ask
for a raise, he/she will definitely NOT remember all of your
accomplishments. Therefore, make sure you document every project that
you've worked on and any and all accolades you received by completing those
projects. Type this up in an organized Word document, recommended 1 page,
and ask your boss for a time when you can sit down with him/her. During the
meeting, present your reasons why you feel you deserve a raise and hand over
your achievements letter. Discuss the projects you've worked on and
emphasize on any things you've done "above and beyond" the average employee
(ie additional certs, awards, etc).
After you present your case your boss should happily give you a raise. If
he/she doesn't, in this industry, leave the company and find an employer
that will respect and award you for your accomplishments.

Additional note: DO NOT mention the "life changes e.g. (new born)." This
is a personal issue and while it may mean a lot to you, it in no way will
reflect on WHY you should receive a raise. Don't even mention it. Raises
are given for exceptional performance based on position. They are not based
on personal issues such as new house, new kid, being broke, etc. Focus on
your accomplishments and you'll do just fine.

Good luck!

The group can correct me if I am wrong but Cisco bought an outfit call
Combinet and inherited the 700 series. They are onlu producing three of them
now:
the 761M, 775M, and the 776M.
Don't get me wrong they are supporting the lower end ones also but not just

RE: Accesslist outbound

2000-08-23 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

I would say that it depends on how you look at it.

If you have the choice of putting it on S2's inbound or S3's outbound.  If
most traffic that goes through the router comes from S2 to S1, it would be a
waste to put it on S2's inbound, because then all the traffic to S1 would be
delayed by it.

On the other hand, if most traffic that goes through the router comes from
S1 to S3, it would be a waste to put it on S3's outbound, because then all
the traffic from S1 would be delayed by it.

You have to measure traffic from/to all interfaces and also deside if you
need to control access from only one interface and/or to only one interface.

Sit down and make some drawings, and you would see how to best optimize the
access lists to match the traffic needs on the router.

All this said, yes you're right if you look at the simple cpu utilization -
if you put it on the inbound interface, unwanted traffic would be droppet
before the router would waste cpu time routing it to it's destination
interface.

Adding HW to PIX

2000-08-23 Thread Oscar Rau

Hi,

The PIX system we have only has the inside and outside NICs, which are
default. If I were buy a 3Com card off the self and use it to connect to
the DMZ, would that effect PIX in anyway. Would PIX recognize this new
network HW? Is it something that I have to buy only from Cisco? The difference
in cost is big $$$. Any advice or exprience appreciated.

TIA.

Title: RE: How to pronounce?l

Its not a big deal how you pronounce as long as the listener get your point. Instead of going too far in pronunciations...just tell him/her the whole form such as:

TACACS: Terminal Access Controller Access Control System.
RADIUS: Remote Authentication Dial-in User Services.
PIX: Private Inetrnet Exchange.

Sorry to jump in your thread, but great question, there a number of
things I don't know how to pronounce. Rather sheepish when you're in
an interview and say you've been studying "x" and you pronounce it
wrong.

How about PIX firewall?
Is pronounced "PIX" or "P-I-X"? (if you get my meaning).

RE: accesslists outbounds?

2000-08-23 Thread Dale Holmes

|--E0,R1,S0 WAN link>S1,R2,E0--|

Vijay,
You are correct in saying that an outbound filter on R1,S0 would have less
impact on your WAN link than an inbound filter on R2,S1, but what about an
inbound extended access list (that considers destination address) on R1,E0?
It might accomplish the same thing, and be more efficient (depending on what
might be happening on R1's S1, S2, S3, S4 etc.).

You really have to examine closely which traffic you intend to filter, and
what impact the filter will have at any of the valid places you may apply
it. It is difficult to generalize this, it needs to be examined
case-by-case...

I got one of those before too. I don't think they always send you one for

yes, you can do this using policy routing, but I don't recommend
it. If you are going to do it, then at least use IOS 11.3, in which
policy routing was fast switched.

In the below:

208.206.76.0/24 LAN ethernet
208.206.76.44 Address of the cache server
!
interface Ethernet0
 description To Office Ethernet
 ip address 208.206.76.1 255.255.255.0
 no ip directed-broadcast
 no ip mroute-cache
 ip policy route-map proxy-redir
!
access-list 110 deny tcp host 208.206.76.44 any eq www
access-list 110 permit tcp any any eq www
route-map proxy-redir permit 10
 match ip address 110
 set ip next-hop 208.206.76.44

This will allow the cache server itself to get out via port 80, but
anything else gets sent to the cache server.

Realize that the layer 3 header is not re-written. When the cache server
receives the packet, it must be configured to accept packets to any
destination. Each OS has a way of accomplishing this, for example with
linux you would use ipchains or ipfwadm.

Policy routing has no provision for health checks nor
failover.which is why I would use WCCP or a layer 4 switch

Re: Bcran cisco 700?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Cisco developed this. They bought
the low end router series and/or the company that made them. Since then, the
800 series, which is the replacement for the 700 series, uses a version of
IOS.

RE: OT---Getting that review

2000-08-23 Thread Coker, Michael

Good luck!

RE: accesslists outbounds?

2000-08-23 Thread Vijay Ramcharan

There is another advantage to placing access lists outbound. Traffic won't
have to travel across the network only to be dropped on the other side.
Less bandwidth consumption across your WAN. That's why it is recommended
that access lists be placed as close as possible to the traffic source. My
2 cents.

they say that outbound access lists are less processor intensive because the
router has only to process those packets destined for the destination you
are trying to affect. When you apply it inbound then the router has to match
each packet coming into that interface even though that packet might not be
relevant to the access list. The scenario presented is just a simple one and
in this case it does not matter where you place the access list but think of
two more serial interfaces in addition to S3. if you apply the access list
inbound then packets destined for S4 and S5 will also have to be processed
through the list even though they have nothing to do with the S3 interface.

So the conclusion is that "Outbound access lists are IN GENERAL less
processor intensive than in bound access lists" ... remember IN GENERAL ...
there can be exceptions

Re: accesslists outbounds?

2000-08-23 Thread Dale Holmes

OK, OK, I see what you mean, but suppose that s1, s2, s4 and s5 are
point-to-point links to stub networks, but s3 is a connection to the core,
or to the Internet, or anywhere else such that the majority of the traffic
entering the router on any other interface leaves through s3. In this case,
nearly all the traffic entering the router gets passed through the access
list as opposed to the traffic from a single interface (s2).

I would strongly avoid saying that outbound lists are generally less
processor intensive, but instead you might say that in certian
configurations they can be... I think that "IN GENERAL", most access lists
are processor intensive, and placement of the access list, inbound or
outbound, should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine which
approach is most efficient.

It all comes back to: "What is the problem you are trying to solve?"
It's really starting to sink in... Thanks Howard!

Hell, I just pronounce it as "Pseudo intelligent, path selecting,

Well, it's spelled "router", but it's pronounced "Throat wobbler

But soon it will be pronounced everywhere as: "Layer 3 switch"

RE: ip local pool addressing question

2000-08-23 Thread C. Cubberley

I was using passive interface for the dialer and async-group, the suggestion
that solved my problem was from Brian Feeny, CCNA, CCDA at
[EMAIL PROTECTED], who sent :

"I think what you're saying is that the Access Server is announcing the
individule /32's which is creating alot of route table entries on your
network? If you would like to reduce that...as much as possible, then
you can implement route aggregation/summarization, so that the access
server just announces a summary."

And, when I applied route summarization for the 10.20.211.0 network on the
ethernet interface, everything cleared up. It seems really simple in
retrospect, but its like the old days when the person who knew where to
whack the mainframe got the most pay and results!

Thanks to all for the suggestions...

Hi,

I would suggest you use passsive interface command to
prevent these updates from being propagated into your network
eg

router eigrp X
passive-interface Dialer1
 passive-interface FastEthernet0
 passive-interface Group-Async0
 passive-interface Serial0:15
 passive-interface Serial1:15
 passive-interface Serial2:15
 passive-interface Serial3:15

Re: accesslists outbounds?

2000-08-23 Thread Atif Awan

they say that outbound access lists are less processor intensive because the
router has only to process those packets destined for the destination you
are trying to affect.

Atif

Re: Help -- How to load balance in OSPF environment?

2000-08-23 Thread Cthulu, CCIE Candidate

If you are hoping that 40% of the traffic will go over one interface, and
60% will go over the faster interface, OSPF can not do that (EIGRP/IGRP can
with the variance command for unequal loading).

However, OSPF will automatically load balance over up to 4 equal cost paths.
You can set the OSPF cost for each interface to be the same using the ip
ospf cost command.

Some info from Cisco about your question:

HTH,

Charles

>From Cisco TAC Q&A Forum

Q: How does OSPF calculate its metric or cost?

A: OSPF uses a reference bandwidth of 100 Mbps for cost calculation. The
formula to calculate the cost is reference bandwidth divided by interface
bandwidth. For example, in the case of Ethernet, it's 100 Mbps/10 Mbps = 10.

Note: If ip ospf cost is used on the interface, it overrides this
formulated cost.

Question: Does OSPF automatically load balance or are additional commands
needed? (I have parallel T1 serial links going between an OSPF Area 0 router
and an Area 1 router.)

Answer:

The router will load-balance over two T1 links if it sees equal OSPF costs
to a given destination. The default is up to four parallel paths, and in
your case, it should be two. You can verify this by doing a sh ip route and
look for two paths to a given destination network across the WAN links.

Also, if IP fast-switching is turned on, the router will load-balance on a
per-destination basis, and if IP fast-switching is turned off, the router
will load-balance on a packet-by-packet basis.

...and also...

Question: Does OSPF support load balancing among serial lines?

Answer:

Yes, load balancing works in OSPF with up to four equal-cost paths, serial
or otherwise.

Internetwork topologies are typically designed to provide redundant routes
in order to prevent a partitioned network. Redundancy is also useful to
provide
additional bandwidth for high traffic areas. If equal-cost paths between
nodes exist, Cisco routers automatically load-balance in an OSPF environment
.

Cisco routers can use up to four equal-cost paths for a given destination.
Packets might be distributed either on a per-destination (when fast
switching)
or a per-packet basis. Per-destination load balancing is the default
behavior. Per-packet load balancing can be enabled by turning off fast
switching using
the no ip route-cache interface configuration command. For line speeds of 56
kbps and faster, it is recommended that you enable fast switching.

RE: what criteria does a access-list use when a there is a contradiction?

2000-08-23 Thread Trevor Corness

IP Access-Lists, or rather Cisco Access-lists in general, are parsed from
top to bottom, until a match is found. The criteria used, is "first match".
Given your examples:

ip access-list 10 deny host 192.168.1.19
ip access-list 10 permit any

A packet comes to the list from 10.0.0.1 -- first line is read, it is not
from 192.168.1.19.. no match. So the next line is read. The packet is
permitted.

Same list, but a packet enters from 192.168.1.19 -- first line is read, it
IS from 192.168.1.19.. it matches. Packet denied, dumped in the bit bucket,
end of story. The next line is never looked at. This is why the order of
your rules in the access-list is important.. as is the placement of the
list.

  Trevor Corness, MCSE MCP+I CCNA

more specifically with the following:

ip access-list 10 deny host 192.168.1.19
ip access-list 10 permit any
ip access-group 10 in

I was recently told that the last line overrides any previous command.
According to the Transcender info, the most restrictive security would be
taken.

How bout something as obvious as this:

ip access-list 10 deny host 192.168.1.19
ip access-list 10 permit host 192.168.1.19
ip access-group 10 in

this will deny packets sourced from the host 192.168.1.19 and will allow the
rest to pass through ...

>I was recently told that the last line overrides any previous command.
>According to the Transcender info, the most restrictive security would be

the last line is for applying the access-list to an interface and if you are
talking about the line before this access group then that does permit
everything but keep this thing in mind that access lists are always checked
sequentially. If a match occurs at any line then the appropriate action is
taken and the list is no longer traversed. So in this case packets with the
source ip address of 192.168.1.19 will match the first line and get denied
immediately. Others will not match the first line and will definitely match
the second as it is meant to match every packet so will be permitted.

>How bout something as obvious as this:
>
>ip access-list 10 deny host 192.168.1.19
>ip access-list 10 permit host 192.168.1.19
>ip access-group 10 in

this will disallow everything because there is an implicit deny all at the
end of an access list. Although you are permitting host 192.168.1.19 in the
second line but here also the sequential nature of the access list prevails;
as a consequence the packets sourced by this host will be denied.

hope this helps

Hello all,

Has anyone used access-lists to redirect http traffic to a Cache Engine? Is
this even possible?

I am aware that WCCP is capable of doing http redirection and have used it

there are other ways to do http redirection.

thanks in advance,
