Well, lets say at your branch office you had the config on serial 0 that I
told you about where it specified that s1 was the backup interface (isdn). As
soon as serial 0 dropped, serial 1 would come up/up and become your link
untill the serial 0 came back. Serial 1 would stay up for that amount of time
you specified (0 300) to make sure that serial 0 was back up for good. You
could check on this by typing "show ip int brie". When this config is
properly set up and serial 0 is up and stable you will see that serial 1 is
not in a down/down state but instead in a standby/down state. This means it's
on standby and ready to come up in case of primary failure. Hope this answers
your questions...

Hopefully someone else in the group has some thoughts, but I may go the

For those of you who've been wanting to buy Cisco Certification: Bridges,

TACACS loopback problem ?

2000-10-27 Thread Phil Barker

Greetings,
I've come across an issue with TACACS whereby
when you require authentication for a router, the

Source Address.

Now if this link goes down. The routing protocol

source IP address fails part of the authentication
process.

My question is : Can a loopback address be used
instead of the nearest interface ?
And what is the command to achieve this, if it is
possible.

Trunk Load Balancing

2000-10-27 Thread Alldread AK2 Robert J

I would like some opinions on load balancing across (2) 6509 switches using
trunk ports.

Here is the scenario...

1 switch at the access layer, 2 switches and the distribution layer. The
access layer switch has a GIG trunk link to each of the 2 dist layer
switches. How would I implement equal-cost load balancing in a round robin
fashion from the access layer switch to each of the 2 dist layer switches.

I would like to do this on a packet by packet level. CCO has some good tips,
but only for load balancing from 1 switch to 1 switch, not 1 switch to 2
switches.

Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated.

PIX, VPNs, Novell

I am so very glad someone wrote a post concerning VPNs and Novell. I would
like to add to it by inserting the Cisco PIX into the mix. I would like to
bring in a Cisco PIX Firewall and use it primarily as a 'VPN access server'
using Cisco Secure VPN 1.1 as client software. However, here at corporate
we are using Novell NetWare 5.1 and BorderManager VPN software. I would
like to eliminate the BorderMangler in favor of the PIX. How do I
effectively establish VPN access through the PIX to this Novell network?
How would authentication to the Novell Tree be accomplished throught the
PIX over a VPN tunnel?

Any suggestions and/or tips anyone may have concerning this project would
be most appreciated.

OOB modem

2000-10-27 Thread Brandon Peyton

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone has a sample configuration of what they've
configured on a router...

I have a 2611 with serial and 2 eths and i wanted to connect and OOB modem
to it to dial up and test etc.

It will have to authenticate to a pop site so it needs that ability.

Could someone help?

Much appreciated

Re: Mentor Tech was Bruce Caslow

2000-10-27 Thread Wayne Gustavus

I am not a former employee, I am a CURRENT employee of Mentor
Technologies (formerly Chesapeake Network Solutions). We are definitely
still doing consulting and doing more of it everyday, as we are both a
Distinguished Training Partner AND a Professional Service Partner. The
"changed business strategy" Brian is probably referring to is a very
big product/service launch tied to our patent-pending, award-winning
vLab technology. Trying to connect this information to the reasons why
anyone left the company would be making a lot of "assumptions" and we
all know the dangers there. And I am highly skeptical that a company of
our size (especially when you focus on just the instructor/consulting
staff) could "flood" any market as Dale Holmes claims.

I can tell you this: we still have 24 CCIEs on our
consulting/instructor staff (of about 70) and we still have some of the
recognized/published industry experts on our staff, some of which have
already been mentioned on the list (Dr. Pete Welcher, Kennedy Clark,
Marty Adkins, Bruce Caslow, etc.) and the ECP1 class--the original topic
of the thread--is currently taught all over the US by either Bruce
Caslow, Fred Ingham, or Val Pavlichenko.

Not an advertisement, just trying to provide some clarity on an issue
that was raised. Any other comments/questions should be taken offline
as I believe most of the list would appreciate it.

RE: Trunk Load Balancing

2000-10-27 Thread Rampley, Jim
Title: RE: Trunk Load Balancing

I assume you mean for a single VLAN you want to do equal cost load balancing.  I'm thinking you can't.  I think about the best you can do is IF you have multiple VLAN's make one distribution switch the root of say all the odd VLAN's and make the other distribution switch the root for all the even VLAN's.  This will give you a some load balancing, not perfect though.

By you post it's not clear what switch you are using at the access layer, but if it's a 6509 and the equal cost load balancing is a must then I guess you could use an MSFC's in all your 6509's, load native IOS on them(you could do it with either OS, native IOS or CatOS), and route across the Gig links using EIGRP or OSPF.  You wouldn't be able to trunk across them though.

I wouldn't recommend trying to use the Virtual Lab for your CCNP. The simulated

Priscilla's book is very good but is not a study guide
- it is a solid reference and she is a good writer.
She developed most of the CID materials for Cisco. My

have a number of very nice reviews on Amazon as well,

Re: Trunk Load Balancing

2000-10-27 Thread Jeff McCoy

Jims right, due to spanning tree, I dont believe you can do it in the
fashion you describe. The only way I know to do this is if you have
mulitple vlans on the access layer switch, have the port priority or root
bridge for x vlans
travel on link 1 while port priority or root bridge for y vlans travel link
2. This will actively use both links for traffic, and provide redundancy in
case of link failure (spantree is recalculated and all vlans travel
available link).

CCIE Cincinnati Study Group

2000-10-27 Thread Mike

Hi all,

I am wondering if there are list members that are interested in starting a
CCIE Study Group in Cincinnati. We will get together maybe once a week and
go through Lab Scenarios. I am thinking that we could have 2 Study Groups. A
CCIE Written Study Group and CCIE Lab Study Group for members that have
passed the Qualification exam, with members helping each other get to the
next level, ie. members who have passed the Lab spend some time with the
CCIE Written Group in coaching them, and maybe a CCIE in Cincinnati kind
enough to coach the CCIE Lab Study Group.
The idea I am getting to is that it has to be a consistent regular meeting
class.

All comments and input appreciated, and if there is a CCIE in Cincinnati
that is willing to help us, coach us and proctor us as we prepare for the
Lab, please let us know.

Re: Mac addresse list

2000-10-27 Thread Anthony Iyoha

If you mean list of Mac addresses, you will find it on the ethernet or Token
Ring interface of a router by typing the command "show arp" or on a switch
by typing the command "show cam dynamic".I have never seen a list of Mac
addresses by itself. If a hub is attached to the local interface of a router
you will see the Mac addresses of all the devices on that hub.You may want
to try doing this.Good luck.

Need some guidance on OSPF Stub area, inverse mask and loopback

2000-10-27 Thread Daniel Boutet

Please could anyone confirm these statements:

1) No AS External LSA (type 5) originate from a stub area
2) No ASBR Summary LSA (type 4) originate from router
if not an ABR router (internal router)
3) In the network statement you would use:

router ospf 1
network 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 area 10
area 10 stub

OSPF would run on all active interface (unless "passive-interface"
command used on some interface)

Would you still use a loopback address?

interface loopback0
ip address 192.168.10.1
router ospf 1
network 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 area 10
area 10 stub

Wouldn't your "network statement" advertise (more LSA's) your loopback since
it "fit"
inside the all host address? Let's say you have 15 routers inside the stub
network (this is
a possibility, right?) would this produce
unnecessary LSA's by advertising the loopbacks?
Isn't the purpose of a stub area is to limit LSA?

Or would you rewrite your network statement more restrictive:

interface loopback0
ip address 192.168.10.1
router ospf 1
network 192.168.100.1 0.0.63.255 area 10 (100+ allowed to be
advertised)
area 10 stub

Am I understanding the concepts properly about the advertisement?
Is my wildcard ok in my last network statement? This is how I figure the
inverse mask:

In short: 192.168. 0110 0100.1 (for readability only use third octet)
   . 0011 . (I matched the 0 bit for the "I
care"
   and the 1 bit for
the "Don't care"
Thanks

RE: Diagnosing Internet connection problems

2000-10-27 Thread Hartnell, George

I have used my Network General (now, alas, Network Associates) WAN sniffer
with great success. I have used the V.35 connector to the router for full
and muxed T1s. This is a great, must-have, keep-'em-honest tool.

War stories? I've locked three vendors in my MDF and bluntly said, "No one
leaves until all fingers point at the problem and not each other." Without
*my* sniffer, we'd still be there.

Of course, you do need to know how to use it. Not a trivial task.

Best, G.

How can I diagnose where the problem is? If the problem is with the ISP,
how can I obtain concrete proof?

Re: Guidelines for Deploying OSPF: Some structure to the design process?

2000-10-27 Thread Cthulu, CCIE Candidate

Hi, Charles,

As usual, you reek of brilliance, and as usual, you have to respond to your
own post since no one else has.

This is an overly simplistic guideline, as it does not include factors such
as memory: a 7xxx router with 4MB memory won't be as effective as a 3xxx
with 128MB.Also, running other routing protocols and redistribution,
distribution lists, access lists, static routes, etc. may also influence
this up/down the scale.

Otherwise, a good start... why haven't you gotten your CCIE yet if you are
so smart?

Re: Need some guidance on OSPF Stub area, inverse mask and loopback

2000-10-27 Thread Cthulu, CCIE Candidate

Daniel,

With OSPF, if you can spare the addresses, loopbacks are always a good idea.

1) Stub areas do LSAs 1/2 internally, and do NOT get external routes (5)
injected into them. ABR of the stub area will generate 3/4 for its area,
stub or not. .

2) Good question! My guess is if the ASBR is just an ASBR, then it will
not generate a 4 for itself; if it is an ABR, then it will generate a 4 for
itself... I don't have my Thomas Thomas book to verify this, though.

3) that network statement 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255...whew, look out free
world... I wouldn't use it, personally!  Your second choice is better;
personally, I like to use network statements like so:network 1.1.1.1
0.0.0.0 area 11; when I look at my configs, I can see instantly who is
participating in OSPF.

HTH,

Charles

I found Radia P's book to be a little whiney and dry. Try Virtual LANs:
Construction, Operation, Utilization by Marina Smith, then if you are still
thirsting for knowledge, try Radia P.Get the concepts with Ethernet,
surely the easiest way to grasp L2 stuff, then you can master the concepts
to other L2 technologies.

BCRAN questions

2000-10-27 Thread John lay

Hi Guys,

While I am studying for the BCRAN, I found the following question
with their answeres, I think that the answere of this questions are
wrong. So I'd like to share this with you

1) choose all of the following that are correct
a-A BRI connects to NT1 for 4-wire connection
b-A BRI allways connects to TE1

The answere b is correct and a is not. I think a should be correct
as well.

2)Which two configuartions must be the same for OSPF routers
to establish adjacency.
a-Routing process ID
b-Router ID
c-Area ID
d-Packet TTL
e-Hello interval

The answere a and c are correct. I think c and e should be correct

3) What is an asynchronous dialup?
a-Dial on demand routing
b-Dialup server
c-PPP conncetion from end user

The answere is b. I think it should be c

4)what is an extended access control list but not in a standard
access list?
a-Source hostname IP address and subnetmask
b-Source network IP address and subnetmask
c-Session layer information
d-Destination port information

the answere is b.

5)When configuring dialer information. Which statement is correct?
a-Values of dialer-group and dialer-list must match.
b-Values of dialer-group and dialer-list must be different.
c-If you set a value for dialer-group you must not set a value
for dialer-list

The answere is C . I think it should be a.

6)Which of the following would you use to prioritize dial interfaces?
a-Dialer access list
b-Dialer pool
c-Dialer interface
d-Dialer profile

The answere is d. I think it should be b.

Waiting for your comments.

I found this book to be outstanding. Very easy to read and understand.
Solidified my understanding of a lot of layer 2 technologies. Does a great
intro on the telephone system and why transmission rates are what they are.
Always nice to have a historical understanding in addition to the technical
understanding.

Redistribution of static routes ? : Late for my tea, AGAIN !!!

2000-10-27 Thread Phil Barker

Hi Gang,

I have 2 routers separated by a 2Meg WAN Link.

Router A & Router B. Router B is my last configurable
router before some other poor gits responsibility.

Router B is running EIGRP with redistribute static
Router B contains a static route :
   ip route 99.75.0.0 255.255.0.0 (Router B's Ethernet
ip address) i.e traffic to other admin chappy.

I want to put a route in B to say specifically for
99.75.80.7 255.255.255.255 go in the direction of
Router A. So I used a firewall address for the g/w of
the static route (which is many hops away from Router
A.

This resulted in a nice loop between RA and RB.

I bashed my routers with anger and then took the 32
bit network off router B and placed the static root
right next to the firewall. i.e the same stament but
only one hop from the firewall, with redistribute
static on this router.

This works,

So in summary, I thought that I could place a static
route anywhere on a router that had redistribute
static on it and that EIGRP would look after it for
me.

So is it redistribution that I do not understand ?

"Bridges Routers and Interconnections", by Radia Perlman is a good start.
But specifically, what Layer 2 technology are you most interested in?
Ethernet? ATM? Frame Relay? I've found "Switched and Fast Ethernet" by
Robert Bryer and Sean Riley to be a pretty good book if your focus is on
Ethernet.

I've also got a good amount of resources on my web site at

Hi, Charles,

As usual, you reek of brilliance, and as usual, you have to respond to your
own post since no one else has.

This is an overly simplistic guideline, as it does not  include factors such
as memory:  a 7xxx router with 4MB memory won't be as effective as a 3xxx
with 128MB.    Also, running other routing protocols and redistribution,
distribution lists, access lists, static routes, etc.  may also influence
this up/down the scale.

Otherwise, a good start... why haven't you gotten your CCIE yet if you are
so smart?

As for free, yes, it is free if you have an account.  If you don't have an account, You can get a CCO account by signing up for the Consultant's program, which is free, by following the link here:

RE: My Layer 2 knowledge sucks

2000-10-27 Thread Irwin Lazar

"Bridges Routers and Interconnections", by Radia Perlman is a good start.
But specifically, what Layer 2 technology are you most interested in?
Ethernet? ATM? Frame Relay? I've found "Switched and Fast Ethernet" by
Robert Bryer and Sean Riley to be a pretty good book if your focus is on
Ethernet.

I've also got a good amount of resources on my web site at
www.itprc.com/datalink.htm

RE: supernetting question

2000-10-27 Thread Brant Stevens

When looking up a route in the table, the router prefers an entry (route)
with a longer prefix, so if there is a network that falls within the summary
range on another interface, you must use either a static route with a longer
prefix (more than /19), or learn about that route from another protocol,
provided the protocol has a better administrative weight than the weight you
are using.

What is this summary for? Is for an advertisement/redistribution into OSPF
or EIGRP? If it is, then remember the default weights assigned to routess
learned from the various protocols... A redistributed static route into
EIGRP will, by default be an EIGRP External, and have a weight of 170...

Hope this helps.

Oh... your summary address is correct... :)

Peter,

Maybe you will need to explane me this one

if you do a summarisation with this mask you will include some network
who wasn't there in the question

what happen if those networks are on a different interface

I still keep my word to say , you need consecutive networks

Re: Guidelines for Deploying OSPF: Some structure to the designprocess?

2000-10-27 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

Am I replying to Charles and Charles? To a virtual Charles and a real
Charles? Hmmm...not sure what layer this is.

I'm going to get into some depth on the reasons for configuration
guidelines, from the perspective of OSPF itself, not forwarding
performance. Just to keep this post of reasonable size, I'll start
with a discussion of single areas.

Apologies for any HTML. I don't know a good way to paste plain ASCII
into Eudora from a Word document, without doing lots of manual
editing. Slightly updated from Chapter 10 of my _Designing Routing
and Switching for Enterprise Networks_.

Area is an OSPF term for a part of a routing domain in which local
routing information is contained. In other words, change propagation
inside the area is at least partially hidden from the rest of the
routing domain. Only selected changes leak out, and there may be
restrictions on the external routes allowed into the area.

An area contains a set of cooperating routers that share a
synchronized and distributed topological database. Routers connected
to multiple areas have multiple databases. Even though this example
has a strongly hierarchical topology and addressing plan, the number
of routes is sufficiently small that summarization is not required.

An area is a basic element of calculating the load on a router. For a
link state protocol such as OSPF, in Area K, the CPU load for a
single routing table computation is based on:
1. The product of the number of intra-area routes in Area K
and the logarithm of the number of routers in Area K
2. The number of summarized or explicit inter-area routes
seen in Area K
3. The number of routes external to the routing domain seen in Area K

The first term is the actual Dijkstra computation.
  Summarization affects the second term.
Stubbiness and external aggregation affects the third term.

But this deals with a single computation. The real CPU
requirements are going to come from how often it will be recomputed.
The most basic need for recomputation comes from unstable
routes. The guideline of 50 routers per area tends to assume a
2500-class router (i.e., a 68030 CPU) and a mix of decent LAN and WAN
links.
Do you have enough CPU? You want to keep the 5-minute
utilization under 50-60%, especially on routers that do not have
separate forwarding processors. If you don't have enough CPU,
decrease the number of links in the area or get routers with faster
CPUs.

ISDN Sim

2000-10-27 Thread Wolfgang Kunkel

I think many people want study labs at home. ISDN can become a
critical thing.
if you have 2 routers connect via S/T on one active ISDN Switch,
there are problems with B-channel communucation.
I do a tick.
1.the ISDN switch is a low cost pabx for analoge an digial
 2. double the connector for the S/T local interface (in my case I
have
not to use the U) for 2 routers
 3. think about my config

Router 1:

interface BRI0
 ip address 10.1.3.1 255.255.255.0
 encapsulation ppp
 dialer idle-timeout 24
dialer map ip 10.1.3.2 broadcast 41
 dialer-group 1
 isdn spid1 40
 isdn caller 41
!

Router 2:

interface BRI0
 ip address 10.1.3.2 255.255.255.0
 encapsulation ppp
 dialer idle-timeout 24000
 dialer-group 1
 isdn spid1 41
 isdn caller 40
!

There are sometime problems with D-channel.
do reset all and connect timers high

Best regards

Wolfgang

Point to point T1 Question

2000-10-27 Thread Rakesh Singh

Guys,
I am getting the following when I give Sh int
serial command.It is a full T1.

reliablility 255/255, txload 14/255, rxload 28/255

I am not getting any input/output errors,no packet
drops. When one application is launched rxload shoots
up from the existing value of 4/255 to 28/255 on one
end of T1 where application is launched.

On the other end of T1 txload goes up to 15/255 from
existing value of 4/255.

Any idea the permitted range for rxload and txload.

Thanks,
Rakesh

Arca Technologies makes several models. Their two port BRI model is less
expensive than Teltone. Other models get pricey. I have spoken with a Rep,
Dean Coleman at 800-888-1978 ext 252
http://www.arcatech.com/

IMHO the Adtran Atlas 550 is the way to go. One or more ISDN PRI ports and
BRI ports in groups of four. A one PRI, four BRI model at dealer price is
around $3k. List price is much higher. Again sold through Distribution such
as Comstor.

Re: Point to point T1 Question

2000-10-27 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

That's just Cisco's bizarre way of showing you bandwidth utilization.
Convert it to a percentage and you will see that you have no problem:

28/255 = about 11 percent utilization
14/255 = a little over 5 percent utilization

Theoretically you could get to 100 percent utilization, since on a T1 you
don't have to worry about collisions, like you would on Ethernet.

The recommendation we used to use at Network General was that average WAN
utilization should not exceed 70 percent, averaged over a 10-minute window.
That way you have some head room. (Using a 10-minute window allows you to
capture a reasonable number of data points over a long period of time, so
you can get a baseline.)

2000-10-27 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

We are starting a cisco (ccie) study group in Coudersport PA.
If you are in the North central PA or the western NY area and would like to be
part of the group let us know.
You must be an CCNP to join. We have four people and are
looking for two more people. We will meet starting Jan 1 2001 every Wed evening
and Sat afternoon. We have a Lab already in place and it is time to make the
run. E-mail me for more info.

Re: security ccie beta exam 351-018

2000-10-27 Thread Arthur Stewart
Title: security ccie beta exam 351-018

I'm taking the beta in 10 days.  In looking
around, I've noticed that the CCIE Security beta Exam Blueprint is similar to
the Security CCIE Requalification Test.  Also, the new (as of next year)
requirements for CCNP-Security are being changed to include tests on Advanced
PIX, Cisco Secure - Intrusion Detection System (aka NetRanger), and Cisco VPN (a
few more details on the CCNP-Specializations page).  Looking at the
Blueprint, I would focus on the protocols, Cisco's implementation thereof and
the part of their product line listed.  The Syngress book that may
approximate the MCNS course is scheduled to be out October 30th.  We'll see
if it is (Cisco Press MCNS isn't due to be out until December).  I've got a
book by Uyless Black called Internet Security Protocols which is good and
concise, but not comprehensive for testing purposes, I also have the Win2K
Security Design Exam Cram for quick coverage of IPSec and Kerberos, etc.
I've read here that "Enhanced IP Services..." by Donn Lee (Cisco
Press) has 3 good chapters on security, and of course, the Kaeo Designing
Network Security.  Good Luck.

Re: PIX, VPNs, Novell

2000-10-27 Thread WKelly

Is the Cisco client capable of NDS authentication ? Why eliminate BM at all?

BorderManager will work through a PIX, it depends on what BorderManager Services you
would need. If you want to run BorderManager Proxy the Cisco will need to pass
traffic
on port 80. If you want to run VPN Services through the Cisco the Bordermanager Server
would have to have a Routable, Valid IP address and the Cisco Firewall can not be
running NAT - though this restriction may not apply with BM 3.6 due soon. For Client to
site VPN the Cisco needs to be able to pass UPD and TCP port 353, UDP port 2010 and TCP
port 213 with a protocol ID of 57.

Re: Altiga PPTP configuration?

2000-10-27 Thread P Thibeault

I have seen the VPN 2.6 beta for Windows 2000 with IPSec support. A few
bugs, but it is working.
Cisco, I believe is hoping to ship this year..

Please don't lie on resumes

2000-10-27 Thread Charlemagne

Everyone,

Don't put down lies or exaggerate on your resumes.
You will be uncovered. Things like, "Very Familiar
with OSPF" leave you open to questions like "Explain
the problems with OSPF over Frame-Relay partial mesh
networks". If your very familiar, then you know the
answer to that question. If you have OSPF all over
your resume and can't answer that, potential employers
will probably not hire you. Be honest, and your
chances of getting that job become greater.

Regards
Kamoto
