Yes over the internet, but not over 64k lines in production. The principle's
the same but you've just got less capacity and you'll be more reliant on qos
and queuing. What exactly do you want to know?

Re: TCP H.225 [7:21519]

2001-10-01 Thread Patrick Donlon

Matthew here's a little info on the ports used in h323:

To set up a voice connection, the initiator starts a H.225 connection over
TCP to the destination entity (normally the gatekeeper) at port number 1720.
In this session a port number for the following H.245 connection is
exchanged. The initiator opens in the next step a H.245 connection to the
gatekeeper over TCP (ephemeral port), in which ports for the actual voice
traffic between two H.323 terminals are exchanged. While the H.225
connection could be torn down after the H.245 ports have been exchanged, it
will in practice stay up until the call is over.
The gatekeeper itself will also open connections to the terminating H.323
terminal in order to be able to negotiate the ports that should be used
between the initiating and the terminating H.323 terminal.
Other TCP ports used for RAS services are 1718 (H.323 gatekeeper discovery)
and 1719 (H.323 gatekeeper registration and status).

regards Pat

Anyway, I have a question - does anyone know the ITU spec, or RFC that

ARQ's and ARC's, but am not sure what port 1720 is used for...here is part

Re: VoIp over 64K leased line [7:21532]

2001-10-01 Thread Patrick Donlon

Hardware, we used AS5300 as PSTN gateways located in various countries to
terminate off-net traffic, they had up to 4 x E1s and were connected to, or
close to, the backbone which had v.high throughput. For the on-net traffic
1750, 2600, 3600 as5300s were used. The local tail connections to the
internet were fairly high capacity again, no less than 2MB, we tested much
lower speeds in the lab though.
QOS is very difficult across the internet so only the local tail was worked
on, had to rely on bandwidth after that. The best qos results in testing
were with cbwfq/llq BUT in most places the routers the CPE connects to don't
support these features and you only have the tos bit to place with.
Codecs used were g711 (80k or 65k per call) as standard and g729 (24k or 12k
per call), if asked for. We never had any major problems with quality of
calls, most people couldn't tell the difference with g711. Generally if
there were problems it occurred in the call set up.
For call set up we used a 3rd party gatekeeper solution, don't bother, it
was a very good idea, i.e.. not being tied to one supplier and using open
standards as much as you can with voip, but it didn't always work. Cisco's
gatekeeper was a joke about a year ago, it may be better now, but you can do
it all manually if you haven't got to many sites as a last resort.

Hope this answers some questions

ISDN over two switched T1 channels? [7:21551]

2001-10-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've got an ISDN PRI back at the home office and 6 routers that dial into for
backups via their ISDN BRI connections. I have been told by my service
provider
that I can use two switched 56K channels off of an existing T1 at another
site
to dial into the ISDN PRI. I have been looking to try and find some kind of
sample configuration to do this. I'm not even sure how this would work. Could
anyone steer me in the right direction? I have searched through Cisco's web
site, without much success and TAC is still researching it for me, but I'm
not
sure they are confident it can be done. The remote site router has a 2600
series
router with a WIC DSU T1 card. The home office has a 3600 with an ISDN PRI
card.

Thanks!

That's an interesting question and I don't have a definitive answer
but off the cuff I would think that yes you should be able to do this.
One of the reasons for switched services was in the not-to-distant past
there were lots of analog CO's that could not offer digital, i.e. ISDN
services but these anolog CO's were/are not an island unto themselves.

Wireless NICs [7:21568]

2001-10-01 Thread Patrick Donlon

I'm testing out a Cisco Aironet 340 access point, it's working fine with
Win2k and a handheld Ipaq. However when I try to set-up an NT machine I
don't get an IP address from the dhcp server. The client tells me it's
associated, the only difference I can see on the status between the Win2K
and NT is that the NT machine has ETSI as the channel set whereas win2k has
North America. I've tried different NICs and NT drivers, also occasionally I
see a message saying that WEP is not purchased or enabled in the Network
security tab on the ACU properties, help!!

regards

Re: AGS+ IOS 11 bridging [7:21515]

2001-10-01 Thread MADMAN

Boy, haven't worked on an AGS in 6 years!!! If CRB is simply a
software issue than it probably would work but my guess is that there
may well be hardware limitions on the AGS, like the inability to do ISL
encapsulation on a CAT4000.

The Cisco documentation says different things on the subject one source
says
concurrent bridging wont work on this box others make little distinction. I
wish to bridge on the 8 serial ports and route on the 12 Ethernet ports.
Encap on the serials is not important although I will be passing IP. Cant
just try and see on this one as it will determine which cables I purchase
for my lab and money is tight.

Re: Blocking Morpheus [7:21302]

2001-10-01 Thread sam sneed

This is not a real option. The point is to block it at the firewall. In a
company with a lot of users, its difficult to tell everyone to do this. The
whole point is to take away the control of the users.

 sam sneed
A few possibilities. I never used Morpheus, but I can only guess at what
 the software did.

You initiated an open connection to Mr. Morpheus. The firewall opens up
the connection for you to go out, and has a state table to make sure your
ACK packets can now come back in. Mr. Morpheus has a full TCP connection
and can send whatever information it likes. Since you do not have the
source code for the client, you do not know what the client is doing. So
let us assume the worst. As long as Mr. Morpheus can tell your server, in
band through the TCP connection channel wise, to open another outgoing,
and
startup the service, it is going to fool your firewall. If your
client/host machine srcs from 1214 and goes to morpheus again, the
firewall
will open the connection, and dynamically create a rule for return packets
to 1214. That is my best guess short of misconfiguration on your part.

A variant of this is proxy features in a firewall where they dynamically
open up after seeing some data in the input stream. So, say you get some
HTML code with some nasty Irc DCC request that opens below 1024 or some
other higher port (some things run on higher ports and are still fairly
useful) and your firewall has an irc proxy, it will open up a port through
your firewall and voila. You now have a direct line to the outside. Of
course, any proxy method with some kind of embedding can do this. Scary,
eh? The silent trojan thanks to HTML based email software and random bad
web sites. Solution would be to use a web proxy that disables ridiculous
attempts in the HTML code stream.

As to how to solve this? Do not use morpheus. Or, make a restrictive
outgoing policy. Internal net-Any allow all although is easy to write,
means if someone can trick your internal net, ala trojans, or weirdo
clients to open a port out. If it is cleverly written, they can subvert
your firewall since it has no idea he is being fooled when he sets up the
 dynamic rules ala state tables.

unable to get anything to work.

Tried

How a host makes IP forwarding decisions [7:21580]

2001-10-01 Thread John Neiberger

Here is an excerpt of a post on the OpenView Forum list. It's related
to our neverending discussions of how hosts make forwarding decisions,
when they forward packets to their gateway, and when they send ARP
requests. I've never seen it presented quite this way and thought it
was interesting to look at. (Thanks to Fred Reimer on the OVForum list
for this.)

I find that it helps to understand the way NNM works, and networks in
general in fact, if one has a certain amount of programming
experience. What better way to explain subnet masking, for instance,
than a chunk of code such as:

IPAddr myIPAddr = ipbystring(10.1.1.2);
IPAddr myMask = ipbystring(255.255.255.0);
IPAddr mygwAddr = ipbystring(10.1.1.1);
MACAddr gwMAC;

int sendpacket(IpPacket *p, IPAddr *destIPAddr)
{
IPAddr mySubnet;
IPAddr destSubnet;
MACAddr destMAC;
int ret;
Frame *frame;

if ((frame = malloc(sizeof(Frame)) == NULL) {
return -1;
}

mySubnet = myIPAddr  myMask;
destSubnet = destIPAddr  myMask;

if (mySubnet == destSubnet) {
/* on same subnet */
destMAC = ARPforMAC(destIPAddr);
setFrameDest(destMac);
} else {
/* on different subnet */
gwMAC = ARPforMAC(mygwAddr);
setFrameDest(gwMAC);
}
setFramePayload(frame, p);
ret = sendFrame(frame);
free(frame);
return ret;
}

It's not exactly C, but it should get the point across. Granted, no
production IP stacks probably don't look like this at all, but
the certainly would follow the same logic. If you can understand this
then you shouldn't have any problem understanding subnet
masks.

Integrated ISIS does not use CLNS outside of sharing some packet

Peter

Do be aware that CLNS is still used in some telco operations
maintenance networks (e.g., for SONET). While I wouldn't consider it
a mainstream topic and would be inclined to move it to voice provider
tests, it's not dead.

Just as a stray point, if you study CLNS, you will see the ancestry
of a good many features in IPv6.

Re: Secondary address on router [7:21576]

2001-10-01 Thread MADMAN

Zero downtime, no, but quite minimal yes. Out of curiosity I started
pingin router A from router B. Changed the mask on router A and dropped
1 packet during the change. It then resumed pinging even though the
masks were not the same so the impact was relatively unnoticeable.

Would there/could there be a concern about ARP table cache entries and the
associated MAC addresses? I've made changes before and found that I had to
clear entries (reboot) hosts such as firewalls because of cached entries.

I'd say Yes. I've never tried this so take it with a grain of salt.
First verify that all your PCs are appropriately addressed.
configuration changes take effect immediately. So:
config t
ip subnet-zero
int e0
ip address 172.16.10.1 255.255.255.128
cntrl Z
Should do the trick.

Local Director Question [7:21589]

2001-10-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A typical physical topology for a Local Director is as follow:

Clients-Hub or Switch(Vlan1)-LocalDirector-Hub or Switch(Vlan2)-Real
Servers

However, instead of using two Physically separate switches for the distinct
VLANs, what if I patch the LocalDirector into ports 5/1 and 5/2 on my
Cat5500 switch, with port 5/1 being on VLAN1 and 5/2 being on VLAN2? This
seems like virtually an identical topology as the example shown above
however there is one problem that I am predicting:

Of course, all inbound AND outbound traffic directed to the Virtual IP of
the LocalDirector MUST flow through it.

The problem is that I have an RSM router on my CAT5500 switch and since I
have established two interfaces on it: interface VLAN1 and VLAN2, what
would keep the traffic originating from my Real Servers and destined back
to the clients from bypassing the VLAN2 switch port which is the
LocalDirector and instead get routed straight across to VLAN1 where the
traffic will go out directly back to the originating client?

Boy, haven't worked on an AGS in 6 years!!! If CRB is simply a

may well be hardware limitions on the AGS, like the inability to do ISL
encapsulation on a CAT4000.

The Cisco documentation says different things on the subject one source

concurrent bridging wont work on this box others make little distinction.
I
wish to bridge on the 8 serial ports and route on the 12 Ethernet ports.
Encap on the serials is not important although I will be passing IP. Cant
just try and see on this one as it will determine which cables I purchase
for my lab and money is tight.

Re: ISDN over two switched T1 channels? [7:21551]

2001-10-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is true. It is actually simple. Configure your serial interface to
autodiscover the external Switched 56 CSU. Then setup a standard dial
string, dialer profile, or legacy DDR config. It is EXACTLY like dialing
out a serial interface using an external modem and a DB60 pin to DB25 pin
Cisco Serial to Modem/Codex cable. Your PRI will autonegotiate down to 56K
instead of 64K just like when it answers a modem. You may require the
isdn incoming-voice data on your PRI serial config.

 something like this...

I have a vlan105 interface created on a cat 6509. The primary ip address
is
x.x.105.254. The interface has secondary addresses of x.x.155.254,
 x.x.156.254 and x.x.157.254.

Servers on this network are dropping packets, one in particular,
serverA-x.x.155.219, is dropping packets 50% of the time.

Moved the server to a different switch, same vlan105, the problem
continues.

Moved the server to vlan100, it works fine.

Replaced cable and nics. Ensured proper speed and duplex are configured.

No output from a debug vlan or span.

Opened a TAC case a few days ago and the problem still remains.

I just got a suggestion to remove and rebuild the vlan105 interface on the
router. That will happen later this afternoon. Any other suggestions
will
 be greatly appreciated.

Re: CLNS and ISIS in RS Lab??? [7:21557]

2001-10-01 Thread Peter Van Oene

Although your correct that routers in an ISIS domain require a valid Network
Entity Title (NET), the point about using CLNS PDU's is inaccurate, though I
admit widely misunderstood. ISIS packets are actually directly encapsulated
at layer two and thus do not use the services of any protocol at Layer 3,
CLNP or otherwise. There has been and likely still is, and probably will
continue to be, lots of talk about encapsulating ISIS PDU's in IP, but CLNP
encapsulation has never been a reality or a goal as far as I can tell. So,
to answer your question, there really are no dependencies and until the
folks in the CCIE lab program pull ISIS from the blueprint, you'll need to
learn it. Since ISIS is actually rising steadily in popularity from a
deployment perspective, I would hazard a guess that it will stay in
existing, and end up in new, exam blueprints for quite some time.

Re: Access control lists that block even-IP traffic ou [7:21598]

2001-10-01 Thread Tom Lisa

Your mask for the last octet should end in an even number. This forces a
check of the last bit position. If you want to allow/deny an even number
then your test against address should end in an even number. If it is for
an odd number, then the test against address should end in odd.

Ex: access-list 10 deny 172.16.8.1 0.0.0.254
   access-list 10 permit any

This would deny all odd addresses on the 172.16.8.0 /24 network.
Change the 1 in the last octet of the test against to 0 and it denies all
even addresses.

Todd Lammle's book, CCNA Study Guide, ISBN 0782126472 does an
excellent job of explaining access-lists and wild card masks. I would
recommend your getting it. If you're going to teach others, you need to
understand this at a deeper level than what your question indicates you
currently have in this often misunderstood and difficult to teach area.

You will find that those students who had difficulty with subnetting will
definitely crash burn when it comes to wild card masks. It requires
various approaches to get the concept across.

connectivity issue [7:21600]

2001-10-01 Thread Paul Holloway

Guys (and gals), I was wondering if anyone had ran into this problem. I have
a private, pt-pt network terminating on my side with a 2524 running 11.1.
This is connected into a 2900 switch. My ISP comes in on a 2610 through a
PIX running 6.1.(Whose inside IP is the gateway for all PCs) It is also
hitting the 2900. My machines behind the firewall can get to the internet
and also ping the 2524 Ethernet interface on my side, but that is as far as
they will go. I have put a static route into the PIX pointing any traffic
for the 10.4.0.0 network (the far side of the pt-pt) directed to the inside
IP of the 2524. from the PIX, I can ping the 2524, and any address on the
far network. But the PCs cannot go past the Ethernet of the 2524. They can
ping the inside interface of the 2524, but not even the WAN interface of
this router. I have also added a static for the Network of the WAN link, a
/30. I don't understand how the PIX can ping through the 2524 to the remote
network and the PCs cannot, when all the routes are in the PIX to direct
these packets to the correct destination(2524). Could it have to do with the
fact the times I'm getting on those pings( around 600ms) are above the TTL
on the PCs or could I be missing something else? This is probably going to
turn out to be a stupid question, and I will regret sending it. Be gentle

Paul

I can't agree with you more about the questions being worded
  badly. I also
just finished the CIT exam for my CCNP. Every CCNP test I went
  into I felt
very confident and found myself during the test wondering where
  the hell did
they come up with some of these questions. You have to be a laywer to
interpret some of them. Although I did well on all of the tests

Here's a thanks to all of you who directly and indirectly helped me
pass
  my
CCNP exams. I passed CIT this morning as the last one.

The CIT exam was the one I felt best prepared for, but passed
  with a lower
score that any of the others. I felt that the questions were worded
very
badly compared to the other exams, and I was asked questions about
  specific
details that I did not recall having read in any of my books. Anyway,
I
   passed - so I'm happy!

A little advise to those of you who are on the first step on the CCNP
   ladder:

   1) Read at least two books for each exam, unless you feel very sure
you
  know
everything you need to. A good rule that I have used, is to get a
study
guide with good reviews. You can search, find and check for those on
http://www.amazon.com. A study guide usually uses an easier
  language that
you can better understand if you're reading about the topic for
  the first
time. As a second book, I like to buy a CiscoPress course or exam
book,
because they are more detail specific regarding what they want
  you to know
for the exam. I do not recommend CiscoPress course or exam books as
the
  only
book unless you are good at reading and understanding technical
explanations. They can be a little hard to understand if you're
  not really
sure what they're trying to tell you.

   2) Download the Cisco exams from Boson. Take all three test exams, and
  then
buy the full version of the one you score lowest in.

   3) Look on the Internet for other good helping tools or
  descriptions. For
the CIT, I recommend using the Flash Cards that Priscilla has
available
(http://www.priscilla.com), and for the BCMSN exam, I recommend my own
applications to help you train the commands on the Catalyst 5000 and
calculate Multicast layer 2 and 3 addresses. Those two
  applications can be
found by following my RouterChief link below.

Now on to CSS1 starting Monday or Tuesday when I expect the book to
  arrive.

   Have a nice weekend,

RE: CLNS and ISIS in RS Lab??? [7:21602]

2001-10-01 Thread Asbjorn Hojmark

By considering the fact that CLNS is no more a part of RS
Lab sylabus, how far they can go to ask about ISIS??

I attended the CCIE Power Session at Networkers 2001 here in
Copenhagen this Saturday, and they said something along the
lines of: Know how to configure basic ISIS for IP. It will
be in the lab, though not all of them.

As far as i know there are many things which require support
 of CLNS in ISIS??

For routing IP? No, not really.

Hello group,

I have a question that could probably be easily anwered. We are changing
our subnet mask to add a new network. Its is on a 4700 router with ip
classless setup. We use real IP's but i'll but private ones on the example..
Ex. eth0 is now 172.16.10.0/24. I want to split this network in half so I
wish to make eth0 172.16.10.0/25 and eth1 172.16.10.128/25. Eth0 leads to
our production network. I want to have this change over with zero downtime.
The Ip address on the interface (172.16.10.1) must stay the same. Is there
anyway to change the subnet mask only with zero downtime? UNIX allows you to
put 2 statements on a singel line split by a ; . Does cisco ios have
something simliar?

Re: When to put Bandwidth on interfaces??? [7:21415]

2001-10-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have also bumped up the bandwidth as high as possible in lab situations
or staging areas where I was TFTPing a large file across a lab network that

included a back-to-back serial link.

I would have thought bumping up the clockrate parameter would have had more
effect than changing the bandwidth parameter.

I would say set the interface bandwidth if the default doesn't match
reality and you are using a feature that uses the bandwidth. IGRP, EIGRP,
and OSPF use bandwidth in their routing protocol metrics. I don't know
about your question about bringing up an backup (ISDN) link. Anyone?

So, when might the default not match reality? Serial ports default to 1.5
Mbps even though the circuit could be faster or slower. You could have a
Frame Relay CIR that is less, and you might want your routing protocol
metrics to match the CIR rather than the default, to avoid a route getting
picked as best when it's really not.

I have also bumped up the bandwidth as high as possible in lab situations
or staging areas where I was TFTPing a large file across a lab network that

included a back-to-back serial link.

Any time that you don't want EIGRP to send more traffic on a frame relay
link then it can handle. Remember that EIGRP will use 50% of what ever is
set as bandwidth.

The goal of the ip bandwidth-percent EIGRP command is to make sure that the

routing protocol itself doesn't use too much bandwidth. Something is
probably wrong if the routing protocol is using 50 percent of the
bandwidth, and just giving it more bandwidth to consume might work, but
might also cause you not to troubleshoot the real problem. EIGRP is
generally a quiet protocol, except for the incessant hellos, which don't
use much bandwidth.

I think the ip bandwidth-percent command got added because of people who
were running EIGRP on unstable networks and on networks with slow links.
When EIGRP converges (during startup) or reconverges (during problems) it
could use a lot of bandwidth on a slow link. I'm sure there are uses for
the command, but I think it's kind of a Band-Aid command.

RE: Lat to Tcp -- Tcp Lat [7:21581]

2001-10-01 Thread Scott Meyer

You might consider changing to IP and telnet if possible.

One thing you need to find out is how the device remote to the server get's
it's config from. Some of the older LAT devices get the config from the
server as they have no NVRAM or such. I was never able to get Cisco to
confirm that the remote device could get its config from the server when the
router does translation.

Other than that, I'm no help. :)

Hi all

Would those who have sat the Switching Exam for the CCNP, share some
information as to what are the areas to concentrate on more than others. Is
there much ATM questions in the exam? What is the passing score? Was the
exam difficult? Are there many ambiguous questions?

Any infomration on how to approach this exam would be appreciated.

Thanks

Token Ring Module Problem for Catalyst 5000 [7:21610]

2001-10-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,

I ordered a Token Ring module from someone off ebay. I stuck it in my cat
5000 and it said that it had an invalid configuration (probably because
there
was just previously a different module in it) and the status was faulty.
I
did a clear config all and reset, and it no longer said that there was an
invalid configuration for the module, just that it was faulty. Periodically,
it says module is not responding, resetting module. I moved it to a
different slot, and now the status changed to other, but it comes up with
the same periodic message. I know both slots work fine.
I bought it and the guy I bought it from guaranteed it wasn't DOA.
Is there something else I need to do to get it working?

Joe Carr

Re: Copy FTP [7:21470]

2001-10-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If it's of any use to the original poster, 11.2(17) on the 4700M and 2514
doesn't seem to support either copy ftp or copy network (invalid input).
However 11.2(17) on a 7500 might - it claims incomplete command instead
of invalid input (I don't have a suitable playpen so I'm not putting in
the full command), and copy ftp ? produces a list of possibilities. Note
that copy ? on the 7500 does not give ftp as an option, though.

may well be hardware limitions on the AGS, like the inability to do ISL

I

Encap on the serials is not important although I will be passing IP. Cant
just try and see on this one as it will determine which cables I purchase

CSS1 - Books available (my findings, what are yours...) [7:21621]

2001-10-01 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

After finishing my CCNP, I am now looking towards CSS1, but I cannot find
many books out there.

The only ones I have found that are made for the exams are all from Cisco
Press, and only one of them are out. Two others are on the way, and the last
one is not even on the drawing board yet.

I have gathered my discoveries so far on http://www.oledrews.com/css1 - so
if you know of a book that I have not listed, please let me know. Also, this
list can be used by others going for the CSS1 to get a selection of books
available.

Another thing, all the exams except for MCNS has the exam number 9E0-57x -
but the MCNS has 640-442. Could that mean that it is about to expire, but
that Cisco has yet not notified about it?

Thanks for any comments to this,

PPP Multilink studies - interesting results [7:21623]

2001-10-01 Thread Chuck Larrieu

A couple of weeks ago there were a couple of discussions on this board about
using multiple T1's to improve data throughput. If memory serves, there were
two possible ways to do this: 1) per packet load sharing and 2) PPP
multilink

for no particular reason I decided to do a little study on PPP multilink.
Well, OK, I do have two particular reasons - an upcoming Lab and a customer
who is asking about this.

So, I build a scenario as follows:

   serial0 token ring
R6R5---R4
 ||
  serial1

to test throughput, I used extended ping, with multiple pings and various
size payloads, from a loopback on R4 to a loopback on R6.

the routing protocol was EIGRP, done to assure per packet routing between R6
and R5 as a control.

My results were interesting, to say the least. unexpected, but so consistent
that there is no question, in my mind, anyway, about some of the assumptions
many of us make about various load sharing and multiplexing options.

a summary of the results are using the Cisco router reporting of
min/avg/max round trip times - the middle number is the one to watch.

packet size PPP multilinksingle serial link configured as PPP
multilink

1000 24/24/13220/20/104

1500 28/29/52 24/27/112

500 16/19/64 12/13/104

6412/14/60 4/7/104

note that in every case, the single link, configured for PPP multilink, is
SIGNIFICANTLY faster than the dual link.

Interesting. So I constructed some further experiments, using extended ping,
multiple packets of variable size - range 64 to 1500:

PPP multilinkper packet load share single T1

   8/17/136 4/17/136 4/17/144

these figures are from over 15,000 pings per scenario, so it is not a case
of random chance here. there is no difference whatsoever between the results
of a single serial link, per packet load sharing over two serial links, and
PPP multilink. what is most surprising is that a single serial connection
proves JUST AS FAST as a dual serial connection.

Now what I conclude from this is an opinion that multiple T1's DO NOT really
do much for you in terms of more bandwidth. At least for the kinds of data
flows I am able to generate in the lab. Furthermore, PPP multilink is
actually harmful to throughput. So I gotta ask - is load sharing really
adding anything to the mix? Really? In real world scenarios and data flows,
where is it that you are gaining anything?

Lastly, I set up a final scenario in which I sent 5000 byte packets. this
means fragmentation and reassembly would occur, because the MTU on all wan
interfaces is 1500 bytes. Here are the results when pinging 5000 times using
a 5000 byte payload:

single serial link: 64/66/168

per packet load share: 64/64/168

ppp multilink: 48/52/172

note here that the load sharing scenario is slightly faster than the single
serial link, and that the ppp multilink is FAR AND AWAY faster that the
other two. I suspect the reason for this is efficiencies gained under the
multilink scenario when fragmenting and reassembling the oversized payloads

In any case, I hope this presentation will lead to some good discussion of
bandwidth and results. would it be fair to suggest that peoples' efforts to
solve what they perceive as bandwidth issues by implementing multiple WAN
links is really a study in fruitless activity?

Maybe I should have set up some IPX scenarios?

Chuck

Very interesting. I would be interested in seeing the CPU load between
methods too. I will venture to say that CPU usage of the multilink is the
highest.

it is in some ways harmful because human resources departments and managers

I'm not saying they should water down the test, nor do I believe they are

6000 to 7000 CCIEs in the world is silly. There can very easily be 10

I disagree. I'm working towards the CCIE, and I want it to be hard. I
want to have to work for it. The last CCNP exam I took was the
Support/Troubleshooting exam, and I wanted my money back. The couple of
hours I put into studying for it were nothing but wasted time.

In any line of work, supply and demand rule the market. The more IE's
there are out there, the less they'll be making. Not only that, but we
lowly CCNP's and CCDP's can probably expect even less. You point out
that there are way more doctors, lawyers, etc... well, there's more of a
demand for doctors and lawyers. It's a simple comparison: ask yourself
how many people in a given population get sick or decide to sue someone,
and compare that to the number of people who need a network designed.

What's more, the easier any cert exam is to obtain, the worse its
reputation becomes; just ask Microsoft. It'll be years before the MCSE
is a respected certification again... why? Because it was too easy to
get. Everyone's got a story about an MCSE who talked big but couldn't
edit an LMHosts file, or couldn't set up a trust relationship, or
couldn't install a NIC. If the IE truly does get easier, how long will
it be before everyone has a similar story about a CCIE?I for one hope
Cisco keeps the lab challenging... I want the IE, but I want to work for
 it.

RE: connectivity issue [7:21600]

2001-10-01 Thread Chuck Larrieu

If I were to take a wild guess, I would say that your 2524 does not have a
quad zero default pointing to the PIX inside address.

your routing is screwy to begin with. a lot of folks don't like to do it
this way, but I would point the default route of all inside devices to the
2524, and have the quad zero default on the 2524 pointing to the inside of
the PIX. your router ethernet interface receives all packets, then forwards
them accordingly.

idle curiosity - why not use your 2610 as your inside router, and the 2524
as the internet router? you can full duplex the 2610 Ethernet and improve
performance, especially under this scenario of using the router interface as
the default gateway.

in general, a good design might be:

internetinternet_edge_routerfirewall---switch---inside_routerWAN
---other_nets

the way you have things now, you are expecting the PIX to route, and it is
not a router. your inside PCs try to get to your WAN, and their default
gateway is the PIX, which cannot route.

hope this makes sense.

Guys (and gals), I was wondering if anyone had ran into this problem. I have
a private, pt-pt network terminating on my side with a 2524 running 11.1.
This is connected into a 2900 switch. My ISP comes in on a 2610 through a

hitting the 2900.
Be gentle

PPP Multilink studies - interesting results [7:21623]

2001-10-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Interesting, as you say.
What load were you getting on the links?
Your pings are measuring latency, not throughput. If the links weren't
heavily loaded, then I can see why you could get these results. Each link
is still clocked at T1 speed, so I wouldn't expect adding links to decrease
latency.

What happens as you approach a T1 volume of traffic?

A couple of weeks ago there were a couple of discussions on this board
about
using multiple T1's to improve data throughput. If memory serves, there
were
two possible ways to do this: 1) per packet load sharing and 2) PPP
multilink

for no particular reason I decided to do a little study on PPP multilink.
Well, OK, I do have two particular reasons - an upcoming Lab and a customer
who is asking about this.

So, I build a scenario as follows:

   serial0 token ring
R6R5---R4
 ||
  serial1

to test throughput, I used extended ping, with multiple pings and various
size payloads, from a loopback on R4 to a loopback on R6.

the routing protocol was EIGRP, done to assure per packet routing between
R6
and R5 as a control.

My results were interesting, to say the least. unexpected, but so
consistent
that there is no question, in my mind, anyway, about some of the
assumptions
many of us make about various load sharing and multiplexing options.

a summary of the results are using the Cisco router reporting of
min/avg/max round trip times - the middle number is the one to watch.

packet sizePPP multilinksingle serial link configured as
PPP
multilink

1000 24/24/13220/20/104

1500 28/29/52 24/27/112

50016/19/64 12/13/104

64 12/14/60 4/7/104

note that in every case, the single link, configured for PPP multilink, is
SIGNIFICANTLY faster than the dual link.

Interesting. So I constructed some further experiments, using extended
ping,
multiple packets of variable size - range 64 to 1500:

PPP multilinkper packet load share single T1

  8/17/136 4/17/136 4/17/144

these figures are from over 15,000 pings per scenario, so it is not a case
of random chance here. there is no difference whatsoever between the
results
of a single serial link, per packet load sharing over two serial links, and
PPP multilink. what is most surprising is that a single serial connection
proves JUST AS FAST as a dual serial connection.

Now what I conclude from this is an opinion that multiple T1's DO NOT
really
do much for you in terms of more bandwidth.

Here are the results when pinging 5000 times
using
a 5000 byte payload:

single serial link: 64/66/168

per packet load share: 64/64/168

ppp multilink: 48/52/172

note here that the load sharing scenario is slightly faster than the single
serial link, and that the ppp multilink is FAR AND AWAY faster that the

I'm not sure, but I think that you may have fallen into one of the most
common traps in the IT cert world - which is believing that the CCIE written
exam is comparable to the lab. I can assure you that the difficulty of the
written is perhaps 5% as difficult as the lab exam, and perhaps less than
1%. Simply put, the difference between the written and the lab is like
night and day, and anybody who has tried both would agree, I'm sure (does
anybody out there who has tried both exams disagree?).

About those books that you mentioned - Caslow, Doyle, Halabi, etc. I
believe that when people recommended them, they were doing so for the lab
exam. I can recall nothing in those books that was useful for the written.
But I doubt that there is a single person who has passed the lab lately who
has not read them.

About your notion that the written is too easy, I agree completely. This
has actually been well-known within the CCIE community - that the written
exam was simply not getting the job done. Hence, Cisco is now rewriting the
written and it is expected that it will be much harder and more
representative of what the CCIE program will be all about.

You also stated that the Microsoft certs are more useful in getting work
than Cisco certs, implying that Microsoft certs are more useful than Cisco
certs. I believe that it all comes down to the interactions of supply and
demand that determines the value of anything in this world. It is most
certainly true that there are more positions available for Microsoft trained
people (higher demand), as a typical organization needs many more Microsoft
admins than Cisco admins. But that's not the whole side of the story,
because you have neglected the supply side of the equation. I would
certainly agree that if there were an equal number of Cisco-certified people
in the world as there are Microsoft-certified people, than the Microsoft
cert would be more valuable. I don't recall the exact numbers, but I do
know there this is not the case - there are many many more
Microsoft-certified people than there are Cisco people. The proof of the
pudding is in the eating. CCIE's tend to have better jobs than MCSE's do,
and this is because of the disproportionately low supply of CCIE's vs. the
supply of MCSE' that easily compensates for the lower demand.

I'll give you an extreme analogy. My favorite spectator sport is NFL
football. We all know that star NFL quarterbacks make millions. But is
that due to some huge demand for QB's? Not really - there are only 32 NFL
teams, so there is a worldwide demand of only 32 starting quarterbacks. So
how is it that these guys, especially the stars, can make so much money?
Simple - there are at most 50 or maybe 75 people in the world who can be
legitimate NFL starting quarterbacks. Of that, maybe only 5-10 of them can
legitimately be considered to be star players. The point is even if demand
is low for something, the value of that thing can still be high if supply is
disproporionately low.
