Re: BGP Load Balance [7:69611]
Yes you can load-balance traffic to the same destination over 2 equal logical paths using "maximum-paths 2" Using Loopback address ip to peer and acheive load-balancing to the same destination will require either to use process-switching - not recommended - or enable CEF and do " per-packet load-balancing " Regards, Yasser >From: "Brian W." >The way I've seen 2 paths used is by peering with a loopback interface and >using >neighbor peerip ebgp-multihop in the config. > > Brian > >- Original Message - >From: "Azhar Teza" >To: >Sent: Tuesday, May 27, 2003 3:16 PM >Subject: BGP Load Balance [7:69611] > > > > If BGP route has two equal paths to the same destination, can it do load > > balance by installing the command? maximum-paths 2 > > > > ___ > > Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com > > The most personalized portal on the Web! _ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. Add the keyword "log" at the end of your access list and check whether there are really hits matching the ACL or not. RE: FR Low Latency Queuing (LLQ) [7:59820]
Hi Ivan, Comments within lines >From: "Ivan Yip" >Hi All, >I am a little bit confused about LLQ. Below is my understanding after >digesting some documentation and feedback from others. Please correct me if >I'm wrong. >1. LLQ=PQ+CBWFQ and PQ is defined by using 'priority' You are correct. >2. if using 'bandwidth', then I'm not using LLQ. What I'm using is CBWFQ. You are only allowed to use the priority keyword with the PQ where its main concern is to forward packets as fast as it can. That's why no queue size is configured for it. As your main concern is latency so once the defined bandwidth you assigned for the PQ using the priority keyword is reached the PQ will start dropping immediately. The point here is: Dropping a voice packet is better than delivering it delayed - from the voice quality prespective - You start using the "bandwidth" keyword with the rest of the classes defined to indicate the usage of CBWFQ. Also you will need to use WRED in order to define min_threshold, max_threshold, and how fast you drop from each class via the exponentianl value defined. >3. PQ (from LLQ) defines the min. and max. guaranteed bandwidth to >the traffic I defined during congestion. > Not necessary during congestion. PQ is treated separetly from the CBWFQ to gurantee low latency for this type of traffic even in normal situations. Imagine a voice packet waiting for a long data packet to be transmitted. This will make the voice packet delayed - i.e. degradation in voice quality which we don't want to happen - this will lead to the fact that you will need to configure LFI to avoid long data packets delaying your voice. >Also, do I need to define the class-default under policy? > >eg,policy-map 1 > class 1 > priority 80 > class class-default > fair-queue > >What's the difference if I'm not defining the class-default? Yes you need doing so. But when you do so you will also define the min_threshold, max_threshold of this class default. After all traffic classified in default class is not sentitive at all for delay and more packets could be kept in its queue without a noticable degradation in performance. For example: Policy-map out class A Bandwidth percent 50 random-detect random-detect exponential-weighting-constant 3 random-detect precedence 3 2 5 1 class class-default fair-queue random-detect random-detect exponential-weighting-constant 2 random-detect precedence 0 6 18 1 Yasser misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED] 3 months FREE*. Re: HSRP and BGP [7:59735]
In your scenario advertising same block over both links to your provider will not help in load sharing. Redundancy is acheived but not sharing because your ISP will receive two advertisments to the same block and BGP only chooses the best route. You can overcome this in many ways, for example you if you have a /22 block. Devide it into 8 /24 blocks. Start advertising 4 /24s through the 1st router, advertise the remaining /24s through the 2nd router. Like this you acheived load-balance as your ISP will receive 1/2 of the routes via one link and the rest through the other. You are not done yet as this will provide load-sharing but not redundancy. For example if Link1 fails this means that 1/2 of your blocks will not be advertised and will stop receiving traffic for them. To avoid this, advertise through both routers an aggregate route for the whole /22. Like this your ISP will always use the more specific route and in a way balance the traffic over both links. When one of the links/routers fail, your ISP will use the aggregate route advertised from your other router to route all the traffic back to you. Another way, is to ask your provider to accept not just 1 route for the /24 but accept both by setting the maximum accepted routes to 2 instead to 1. 1 is the default and ISPs normally don't accept changing this default value. HTH, Yasser >From: "Ivan Yip" >Hi All, > >Thanks all your response. > >Now two routers adverise same block /24 to the isp. I found that they are >'load shared' in this sense. Re: Specific BGP Question [7:58428]
Jim, I am confused here on what u are trying to accomplish. If your target is to make downstream traffic of your client to enter your AS through the 16631 rather than the 701, then what u need to do is prepend the routes received from your client using your AS many times before advertising them inturn to 701. Like this to the rest of the world routes to your client networks through 16631 will appear as a better route than through the prepended routes advertised via 701. Which means that the route map you need to apply will be applied on your 701 neighbor not on the client neighbor. If u meant the upstream traffic of your client then this is a different story and would take a different approach solving it. Waiting for your feedback. >From: "Jim Devane" > >Hello all, > >Long time lurker, first time poster. > >I have a router that is multi-homed between 16631 and 701. >I have a new client who is buying transit from us. >They are multi-homed to us and 1239. >A business decision was made to policy route their traffic out 16631. >As a result I will only publish 16631 routes to them. >However, if 16631 goes away, I want to be able to push the 701 routes to >them. >Injecting a default wouldn't be very effective here since 1239 will most >likely have a more specific route! >So Conditional Adv to the rescue. Re: CCIP MCast and Qos Exam......How tough?? [7:58161]
As tough as u can imagine. I hardly passed it though the passing grade wasn't that high. The problem with this exam is that none of the sources available makes u quite confident that u really understand all the topics - Specially the QoS part - I believe things would be much more different if you have the chance for lots of hands-on experience with it. It's kinda general as u said but passing the exam is one thing and really feel confident that u really know the stuff is another thing. Though passing score for MPLS was very high (867) but through the exam I felt MPLS was much easier than the Qos/MCAST one. Again maybe because I have the chance to really practice MPLS. All what I can say is that u need to study hard for this one and that QoS is one of the topics that really needs a book or two that are well written and covers it from top to bottom without assuming any previous knowledge about the topic before. HTH > >Hello, Has anyone taken the CCIP Mcast and Qos exam? Need to know how >tough it is going to be. Re: Is it worth it to pursue CCIE R&S and CCIE Security [7:57928]
Man, I guess what you need to do now is to concentrate in studying. Exam schedule you stated is very close and it's not the suitable time at all to hesitate. Instead you need by this time encouragement, spirit, and faith in what you are doing. I don't see a solid clue supporting your feeling that you will be out of work because of downsizing - unless you got a hint from your manager to start looking for something else -. If not, I guess gaining such certificates would support your position a lot at your current job and for future oppurtunities to move on. Yeah these days are tough ones but for sure they will be gone oneday. Bottom line is instead of wasting time hesitating, concentrate & focus such that you don't regret later about it. I have read other colleagues feedback too about your query and I see everyone of them has good point of view too like -nrf - so basically you got our feedback, think about it and make your mind fast in order not to waste much time. Re: Multiple CCIE qualification exams then labs? [7:57019]
All, The feedback I got from Cisco about this is as follows "Although other Voice certification options are being discussed, the only related exam currently in production is the IP Telephony, which will concentrate on the Enterprise. The IP Telephony exam will begin beta in November." This is one of the various written option for CCIE C&S. Keep in mind that lab remains the same regardless of which written you pass for C&S and hopefully when you pass nothing points out which written you have manage to pass. Re: Tag-switching and MPLS interface commands [7:56368]
1- Pre-standard implementation of MPLS on IOS platforms was called tag switching. All configuration, debugging, and monitoring commands used to configure MPLS on IOS therefore used the tag-switching keyword 2- " tag-switching ip " appears in the configuration even when you type " mpls ip ". This is for backward compatability with older IOS versions incase you needed to downgrade the version for any reason. 3- tag-switching default is TDP, while MPLS is LDP ( you can change this if u want ). 4- tag-switching is Cisco propriarity while MPLS is the IETF standard. Other than that commands can be used interchangable. Re: BGP question. [7:55944]
1- Try to remove the prepending you did and see whether things will come back to normal or not. 2- If it came back to normal condition then check the way you are configuring this route-map and discuss it with your ISP to get more feedback from him The processor & memory readings you provided are encouraging so it shouldn't be an issue with the router itself. Finally if nothing worked out paste your config to the group maybe someone can point the configuration problem - if any - >From: "Jose Tomas Pinal Salvador" > >Hello Study Group. > >Currently I have 3 differents BGP sesions establish with 3 differents >providers. RE: DQoS exam - review [7:55603]
No I believe he is speaking about a different exam. For the one you are talking about QoS/Mcast, I just passed it one week ago and I can tell you it was one of the hardest exams I ever had with Cisco. I see it even harder than the MPLS exam - which I managed to pass too -. The problem with this exam is that for the QoS sources that can be used as a study material I see them all of poor quality - whether the QoS Cisco press book, or the QoS configuration guide - I guess QoS needs more intention from Cisco to provide a cool reference for those who wish to learn about it. For the Multicast part I just read the 2 chapters in the switching course book - which wasnot enough but I hadn't other alternative as it appeared to me that I would spend forever reading the Multicast source and I am not in deep love with Multicast :). Bottom line, read as much as you can to pass this one. HTH, Yasser >From: "Kim Graham" > >Is this the QoS/Mcast exam you are speaking of? RE: E-books [7:55001]
If it just goes with books this would be durable but you forgot to say how painful it is if you ever thought of having your own CCIE lab. Buying routers is some sort of unaffordable luxury, one becaeause of the range of salaries that when converted into its equivalent amount in dollars looks peanuts, the other is which makes it even worse is that we pay much more than the original price of the equipment to cover shipment and taxes imposed on any exported equipment. This makes the only feasable possibility to have a real lab over there if your company can afford one - for company's use - or just rely on your real experience through work. Ug.. life is just so unfair. I was laughing my headoff reading that e-mail of the guy who left USA to England and trying to same some money for his power chords. Re: Enable Secret of AS5300 [7:55086]
What I will say might sound silly but here it is You just pasted the enable secret line in encrypted form, did you got it from a backup file for the configuration or you can login to the router using sort of a script where the password is saved but you can't retreive it. If it is the case where you can login intp the priviliged mode then why don't you change the password instead of trying recovering it . Re: BGP and Load Balancing [7:54297]
Yes, BGP selects only one best bath. The default for BGP is one path, the default for other routing protocols is four paths. However, in some cases you would like to change this for BGP and this can be acheived using " maximum-paths" command. The BGP selection process is a series of qualifing steps and if still two routes were equal then as I recall in step 9( Not sure of the step number) if you are enabling the maximum-paths command both routes will be accepted in the routing table. BTW: This is very unlikely used and most of those using BGP prefer using other methods to acheive load-balancing rather than using the "maximum-paths" command. Regarding static routes, they don't have the wealth of attributes that BGP has, so if more than one static route is configured to reach a destination (for example two default routes to different interfaces )they will be used on a round-robin basis if process switching is enabled. If fast-switching is used (default) then load-balancing over these equal static routes will be per destination not per packet like process switching. Keep in mind that this load-balancing done using via static-routes only concerns upstream traffic and has nothing to do with downstream traffic. HTH, Yasser >From: "Abu Mwalie" > >Hi All, > >It is not very clear to me still regarding BGP, Static Routes and Load >Balancing!! > >Can any one out there shed some light!! Hi Paul, To configure a router to be an Auto-RP use the following command: Router(config)# ip pim send-rp-announce scope This should be applied on both R1 & R2 in your scenario. To configure a router a RP mapping agent (R4 in your scenario) use: Router(config)#ip pim send-rp-discovery scope Routers configured as Auto-RP advertises Cisco-RP-Announce at 224.0.1.39 while routers configured as RP mapping agents listens on this IP and sends inturn the RP-to-group mappings in an auto-RP RP discovery message to the well known Cisco-RP-Discovery 224.0.1.40 PIM DRs listen to 224.0.1.40 to determine which RP to use. Kindly let us know if this will work out or not as I am not that strong with Multicast and it happens for me to be studying it now so I looked for the commands but never tried it myself. Re: 9/11 [7:53084]
Dear All, I see this going out of the aim why we are here. We are here to study and exchange knowledge. I never heard that politics is one of the topics allowed here. Nobody would say what has happened in 9/11 was right, but as some already in the list mentioned here that every story has two justified versions. No one agrees with this but as long as US doesn't deal with external policy cases fairly - I won't give examples because they are quite clear - then don't blame anyone for defending his right to live peacefully like you already do. Double standards is over killing everywhere. It's something that just brings depression and frustration. May God bless all those victims who have been killed in 9/11 and may God give us all the wisdom to wish good for others as much as we wish it for ourselves, to give them the right to live in peace as much we wish for ourselves, to give them the right to prosper as much we wish for ourselves, to give them the right to choose their destiny. Re: traffic shapping and rate-limit [7:52468]
It's my turn to disagree :). If we are going to consider quality of service from ISP point of view then don't you think that rate-limit is giving you the advantage of passing exceding traffic for your client after marking it such that if you do have free bandwidth as the ISP you can let this traffic through, and drop it if not? Using rate-limit in such a way means that you can think of charging your client more for giving him such an option. This is not acheivable using traffic-shapping as it just sets a threshold and drops packets exceeding that threshold. What you are doing means to me that you find traffic-shapping is better than rate-limitting so you are applying it on the outgoing traffic to the client. However, as it is unidirectional and you can't rely on asking the client to do it from his side also for the other direction so the only alternative is to rate-limit on the incoming traffic. Would you kindly explain to us why you find your way would provide a better quality from the ISP ? Regards, Yasser >From: Jay Greenberg > >I would have to disagree. Re: flash PCMCIA [7:52604]
You should be able to do this from the router itself. However, if the PCMCIA is not recognized on the router you need to format it on a machine that supports BSD as BSD file system and the one used with the router are compatible. If by any chance you have access to MAC OS you will be able to do it as it supports BSD. I haven't find a driver for windows that can do this. If you reached one I would be glad to have a copy from. Re: traffic shapping and rate-limit [7:52468]
Rate-limiting is what we call policing and it is done from the ISP side. It is bi-directional so you can rate limit input & output. You can define what is the policy to be followed when traffic is within range and what to be done once exceeded like pass, mark, drop. Traffic-shapping is done from the client side and it is unidirectional ( Controlling the outgoing traffic from an interface. Shapping helps when 2 sites are communicating with each other, one of them is 1M while the other is 256K, traffic shapping would be defined from the 1M side inorder not to flood the 256K link and lots or retransmission occurs. >From: "Mohamed Saro" > >what is the difference and the direction of rate-limit and traffic shapping > >FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html >Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: Click Here Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=52469&t=52468 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Using QoS to Control Utilization [7:51254]
Hi Group I need your suggestions regarding the following Scenario.A company's main Branch is having 1M Internet and inturn it is providing Internet/Connectivity between 4 branches using a hub-&-spoke topology over another 1M.The client requirments are as follows1) Frame Relay is used to acheive connectivity between branches and the main office2) Main Branch is feeding the 4 branches with a total bandwidth of 1M3) Each Branch will have 1M connecting it to the main branch. (Over-Booking )4) Any branch can burst traffic up to the 1M if working alone.5) Traffic of any branch should fall to a pre-defined value incase more than one branch trying to access the main branch at the same time to either have Internet or to reach another branch through the hub. I thought about QoS and I guess this target can be acheived using it. Haven't digged enough yet to figure out how this could be done and thought about hearing from you about it. Re: BGP Route Reflectors? [7:50573]
The statement in the book means that either all IBGP peers are fully meshed ( which is a logical mesh not mandatory a physical one ), or use Route Reflectors to reduce the number of IBGP sessions needed. For example, if you have 10 routers that want to run IBGP over, those 10 routers doesn't have to have direct physical connections from each router to the others to initiate this Full Mesh - logical - IBGP sessions. Another example, we can have a full logical IBGP sessions between those 3 routers which are Ra-Rb, Ra-Rc, Rb-Rc while not having a full physical mesh ( Ra & Rc are not directly physically connected together ) RouterA--RouterB---RouterC >Group, > >In reading the BSCN book, I have stumbled across something confusing when it >is discussing "route reflectors". Hi Group, Regardless whether Huawei reverse-engineered Cisco products or not. Regardless the fact that their OS almost match with Cisco and they offer platforms with almost same conventions and even introducing same certifications to gain credability for them. I believe it's Cisco's concern more or less either legally - if they can sue them or not - or Marketing wise because Huawei products are like 40% less in price than Cisco's equivalent. For us who are working in the networking field should this worry us or not.. I really don't know, but what I really know is that Cisco has to do something about it either by knocking them down or dropping prices significantly to keep its market share intact. I recommend tacking them in the following order: 1-MCNS 2-CSPFA 3-CSVPN 4-IDSPM The 1st one (MCNS) covers general concepts and have some chapters speaking about PIX so it will be a great help as a preparation for the 2nd one too (CSPFA). RE: Control Break Sequence [7:4988]
Once upon a time I have been told that doing the following will let you to the ROMMON even if you don't know the proper break key combinations 1- Open your software that you use to access the router through the console. 2- Adjust the Baud Rate to be 2400 bps 3- Power on your router. 4- Keep pressing on the space bar for like a min. 5- Re-adjust the Baud Rate to the normal speed. 6- Reconnecting to the router you will find it in the ROMMON. The concept behind this procedure is playing with the 1's and 0's signal level that a router should expect to go to ROMMON. Sounds wierd but I tried it and it works. Re: bandwidth in serial interface [7:48481]
Bandwidth is just a nominal value that has nothing to do with the actual bandwidth which the serial interface is carrying. You would need to modify the default bandwidth value to a different one in the following cases: 1- To have meaningful readings out of the txload, rxload. For example The default bandwidth would be a T1 while your circuit is 128K. You will run into cases where you are fully utilizing the 128K and still txload, rxload doesn't show 255/255 to indicate link is full. What you will get in such a case 21/255 because it is referring to the default bandwidth of the interface not the actual speed. 2- In situations when you want more control over load-balancing between the interfaces. For example if you are running a dynamic routing protocol it would use such nominal value in its calculations for load-balancing the traffic over the interfaces. You will end in situations where you have to modify the default bandwidth to acheive your target in load-balancing. RE: interface traffic showing unreasonable statistics [7:48397]
If it is the summ of the average input & the average output this will be ok as already mentioned here that the link is full duplex, so expect to get max 256 in & 256 out at the same time if you have such traffic. However, if you just mean that the 32 was the traffic of either the input or the output only then there is something wrong here. If this is the case then most probable that your ISP is letting you burst over the contracted 256K - lucky you :) - either intentionally or by mistake. If the line speed is higher than the 256K and again the provider is not rate-limiting the traffic from his side, then you will be able to go as far as the line speed can support. Give us some feedback on the line speed, the type of the circuit ( Frame-Relay, leased-line), whether this is the only circuit terminated on that interface or there are many others. > > Hi all, > > I am using a cisco router with a frac-E1 link terminated on it > > (256kbps). If this is true - and would like to hear from you guys specially people who passed there labs in South Africa whether this is true or not - I believe that Brasil would be the same like South Africa and to get good environment for the exam it would be either Brussles or USA. RE: New 2600 and %Error opening tftp [7:48265]
You still can log error messages using " logging buffered ". I believe he doesn't have any lines in his configuration that include pointing to a TFTP server as per his words. Re: New 2600 and %Error opening tftp [7:48265]
Try " no logging console ". This should prevent error messages, interfaces coming up & down from popping up in console screen. >%Error opening tftp://172.30.100.34/network-confg (Timed out) > > > >Any idea where this crap-ola is coming from or what it is ??? > > > >I just pasted a config into a new 2611 and this appears @ the console >every few minutes. > > > >I disabled service config (2611# no service config)" but that did not >change things. > > > >The running config does not contain any TFTP commands. > > > >Any ideas ??? > > > >Thanks In Advance > >Phil _ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=48270&t=48265 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Help [7:48085]
If you offer Frame-Relay services why don't you provide him with 2 virtual circuits ( each 128K) over the same router interface. From your side you can then route 8 IPs on one of the virtual circuits and routing the remaining 8 IPs to the other one. If Frame-Relay is not an option then I would say try to see what you can do using QoS on the client router to gurantee certain bandwidth for specific applications. Re: what is conditional label advertisement [7:48157]
>Hi, > >Can some tell me what is conditional label advertisement with resect >to >mpls and when it can be used Configuring Conditional label advertisment is considered to be an optional step in MPLS configuration procedure. By default, a router will generate and propagate labels for all networks that it has in the routing table. If only label switching for a limited number of networks is required (for example, only for router loopback addresses), configure the conditional label advertising. By default, labels for all destinations are announced to all LDP/TDP neighbors.Conditional label advertisment enables you to selectively advertise some labels to some LDP/TDP neighbors. Note that it can work only over frame-mode interfaces. You can use it doing the following router(config)#tag-switching advertise-tags for net-acl [ to tdp-acl ] Where as: Net-ACL the IP ACL that selects the destinations for which the labels will be generated. TDP-ACL the IP ACL that selects the TDP neighbors that will receive the labels. >can someone explain the significance of down bit with respect to ospf Down bit is a mechanism that was introduced to prevent route redistribution loops between OSPF running between PE- and CE-routers and multi-protocol BGP running between PE-routers Down bit is an additional bit that has been introduced in the Options field of the OSPF LSA header. PE-routers set the Down bit when redistributing routes from MP-BGP into OSPF. PE-routers never redistribute OSPF routes with Down bit set into MP-BGP. The PE-router that redistributes the MP-BGP route as OSPF route into the OSPF topology database sets the down bit. Other PE-routers use the down bit to prevent this route from being redistributed back into MP-BGP. >maximum how many ospf process can I run on a PE router 32 ( This number is not scalable at all with expected many VRFs configured on the PE router). In general it is not recommended to use OSPF as a routing protocol between the PE & CE because of the limitations that should be taken care of. RE: Who are the financially viable carriers? [7:47655]
Regardless of who is more financially secure, I would technically vote for C&W. Having an overseas circuit from them I rarely faced troubles and even when trouble happens their support is very fast and more important they would say the truth and not start playing games with you. >Since I noticed a plug for another company I'll throw in my 2 cents. > >I'm not sure what services you are looking for but we offer quite a few and >have a good global presence. CCIE Communications & Services [7:47565]
Hi there (My first contribution in this list) Anybody here is preparing for the Communications & Services ? I have some questions that I would appreciate receiving an answer for 1) Do you consider the Communications & Services harder and more recognized that the Routing & Switching or not ? 2) Will the equipment list be common for both exams ? If so, will the changes that will be active the 4th of November reflect on the Communications & Services also ? 3)I noticed that there are many versions on the qualification exam for the Communications & Services, how can this be true while there is only one standard lab exam ? 4) Is the blueprint for both exams the same or not ?? 5) I checked the CCIE population over Cisco site and didn't see any clue how many CCIE's in Routing & Switching, How many in Communications & Services, and how many for Security, any clues ? 6) Finally, if it you have the option & knowledge to go either for the Routing & Switching or the Communications & Services, which one would you prefer and why ? I am totally confused and need your advice because I want to go for the Routing & Switching, while my company wants me to go for the Communications & Services. Which one worth more in your openion ??
