I doubt if fax machines make up a very large percentage of the phone lines.
probably under 10%.
cheap phone lines burned up all the numbers. when I had my company, I started
out with 2 lines + dedicated fax. 10 years later, had "MY" line 7 to the
company, 1 for the alarm, 1 for ups, 1 for fax. for a while had 4 for some
kind of computer connection before cable & dsl.

put 4 in at home. 2 for wife, 1 for me, and one for fax.

I think if all were on com, we would be to 8 or 9 or 10 character minimum.

businesses like to have a site that conveys their name. my company was ppi.
there are a lot of ppi's out there. i have ppiusa.com & net & org(for
different purposes) had ppi.(whatever belieze is). have
pictureframes.something and photoframes.something. never used them. certainly
a lot better than 7&gwpp€Vx£½.com, or
aabb.com.

I think to have a system of unique codes all in dot com, one would have to go
to codes like those things to activate windows OS.

Re: [CGUYS] UPS Question

2007-10-14 Thread gerald
A UPS will also get unstable and noisy if the voltage goes up. appliances and
electronics will be unhappy also. get a line meter from radio shack(i am not a
part of radio shack).

If the meter is bouncing up, and up a lot, call the power company, and tell
they you have lost your neutral. very big, and very dangerous problem. keep
punching buttons at power company till you get a human. they should have
people out within a couple of hours.

the way AC works is it is pushed on one wire and pulled on the other. each run
between +/-110 and ground. if the neutral goes, that is one of the two wires,
and the circuit is run between one of the power wires, and the ground(water
pipe) it is not a great conductor, so the +110 push can get up to 2-300 volts.
it kills electrics, and it kills people.

yes, we lost ours. I got through at 7pm. pepco showed up at 9 pm with a crew
of 6-10, 2 backhoes, etc.etc. they stayed for 3 days, destroyed the front lawn
and driveway. they pay for all killed equipment.

info world aug 2007

In an ongoing alteration of the consumer PC landscape, Apple laptop sales have
surged to a new all-time high over the past 90 days -- up from 12 percent in
June to 17 percent currently. Apple desktop sales (7 percent; down from 8
percent) have been solid but unspectacular during that same time period.

from wired, may 2007

According to
Bloomberg,
Apple has captured 9.9 percent of the U.S. laptop market, just behind Toshiba
(26.2 percent), Hewlett Packard (23.9 percent) and Gateway (13 percent).

don't know if this is US or world data. also, DELL is NOT included.

if you follow the numbers, the laptop market is twice as large as the desktop
market. I think these numbers are all screwed up, because they do not include
direct sales.

When my wife worked for xerox, and they replaced all 10,000 or 20,000 or so
laptops for $10,000,000 or 20m or so, it was a direct sale.

that chart does also show Lexmark selling about 3M in printers, and xerox does
not make the 3m mark? the 6 big xerox machines to the IRS were over 3M
total.

these numbers are the total of "one-zies" sales.

[CGUYS] Mac OS UG's

Mac 10.5.0 arrives next week. someone is selling it for $106. when they fix
it 6 months from now with 10.5.1, what will be the charge, another $106, or
170?? or historically when mac went from 10.4.0 to.1.2.3.4, ect, what did
they charge?

I sort of recall MS sending out the UG's which they called section 8's or some
such, and did not charge.

from what I read on the mac/apple BB's, the anals are all confident that 10.5
will not run right, but they got to have it.

Re: [CGUYS] Reliable, free broadband speed test sites?

this is the same place

http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?java=1

I find it interesting that I get the same results, give or take 5 or 10% on
most any of the sites, and most any time. Indicates they(conmcast) have a
limiter on my circuit, and the pipeline from my house to centeral processing is
never full.

get 8.0 and0.8 Mbps.

What is "interestingly" about a comcast circuit?

I also have comcast, and have no idea what I am supposed to get. either for
cable speed, or on the cable network. I did ask about cable channels, and got
an incomprehensible answer. do not have time to sit on hold and get a real

Re: [CGUYS] Reliable, free broadband speed test sites?

2007-11-03 Thread gerald
some 3-4 years ago, our internet signal would fail a couple of times a day, as
did many of our neighbors who also used Comcast internet.

onsite tech #4 or 5 or 6 connected a meter to the signal strength at the
computor and declared it to be -2 or -3, and that it should be at least
0.(there was a plus part to the scale). He went out to the box on the side of
the house and changed what he called a "filter". this repair fixed the
problem.

about a week later, a couple of service techs arrived in the neighborhood and
changed all the filter for all the comcast subscribers.

[CGUYS] cloning iMac drive

2007-11-04 Thread gerald
bought wife an iMac last month. bought a copy of 10.5 for her to load. she
wants to clone her drive with the 10.4.X on it before install of 10.5.

there is a recommendation of using an external firewire drive instead of an
external USB drive. I have a couple USB drives around, but do not have a
firewire around. is it really better or necessary to use firewire?

will the 2.4ghz 24" support a second internal sata drive? is the cable or
connection for support already in the machine?

the laptop may also have a place to plug in an external antenna, which would be
an easy resolution to the problem.

I gather the built in is built in, and not removable.

Re: [CGUYS] cloning iMac drive

2007-11-06 Thread gerald
on my peeceez, I buy a drive, find a cable and power floating around in the
machine and connect the drive. the drive hangs loose. I can clone the C drive
in a very short time. I then just pull and label the drive and put it in a
stack with other drives. can this be done with an iMac? I know there is no
room in that case. but are there cables and power floating around? took
forever to write to the external, and I know she'll over write it.

I know its got to be tight inside the little box. I don't understand how they
cool the processor. I have not opened the thing to look inside(wife's
computer) and do not hear any fans running.

most every time my wife runs Leopard thru the Linksys router, it goes down.
she transmits from the iMac to a D-Link wireless, which is then connected to

she had a PC talking to the d-link and that was ok. I run a PC thru the

Re: [CGUYS] Rip Van Winkle [Was: Looking for notebooks

My new business program wants to see the old version before I load it. I could
just buy the new full version. only about 12-15K. the old verson is on
floppy. 7" floppy, or whatever the size of that big one was. I have a drive
that I plug into the machine. I have not done it for a while, so am not
certain the bios will see the floppy if I have to transfer the thing by
reloading.

I need foxpro. the version I have is on a floppy. it does not transfer and
load with a dvd.

my payroll program wants to see the old payroll program to ug. old is on a
floppy.

one of my scanners runs on an oddball extra slow scsi. funny plug. I move the
card. the scanner is a 12 x 18 heidelberg that does about a zillion dpi.
takes forever. the program that runs it came as a box of floppies. large box
at that.

western electric and bell ran the NYC telephone system on pre war carbon
switches in the mid 50's when I worked for them...Pre WWI !!!.

I think the FAA and the FBI are running on mainframes that are 20 or so years
old, and use tape backups from the same era.

the DoD refused for years to use laser printing.

lots of flash drives do not survive the day. would rather use something that I
thought was reliable.

for play at home it's one thing to use the latest tecnology. for real business
apps, nice to have something with a track history so when the irs comes
knocking, they do not want to her woops, it worked yesterday.

Ah yes. the Iomega Zip drive...and the chatter of death. I threw all of my
zip drives away after I had my data turned to powder a couple of times.
shugate made working drives in the 60's or 70's and Iomega made chatter of

I don't think anyone ever loaded software for sale on a zip disk.

Re: [CGUYS] Epson third-party inks

2007-11-10 Thread gerald
xerox has aggressively pursued control of toner refilling. xerox replacement
carts were/are expensive.

hp does not pursue, as they have nothing controllable in their mix. it's cheap
and crummy, or the cheap and crummy works well in an hp. hp laser print rubs
off as it is not well cured. note the print on the back of the letter. not
very professional.

maybe I'm not clear on this. I buy the ug's for a grand or two. I show it the
old floppy, and load CD's with the new program. the program wants the original
purchase floppy to load.

No, I do not. the program is a database program written in some version of
foxpro, and comes with runtime foxpro. however, if I wish to muck with it
myself and pull unique reports, then I need foxpro. maybe there is a psuedo
fox pro out there that will work better, or I could learn how to program in C
or B or D some such, and extract the outside information I want.

>>my payroll program wants to see the old payroll program to ug. old is on

>This gets worse and worse. Your business is hanging by a thread.

I could hire ADC and pay them $150 a month and a buck a check. spend an hour
putting together the information they want. I've never missed a payroll.
takes the office person 5 minutes to enter payroll, and another 5 to print the
checks. then 10 minutes to put them in envelopes and distribute them. data is
compiled and printed in couple minutes and goes to the accountant. I can get a
replacement of the same software for only $2000. then I would not have to show
the floppy, I would show the cd for the next year ug, or I could spring for
another 2 grand and get a brand new 2008 cd of the data.

If I dump my business package, looks to me like the best swap is to the new
greatplains now owned by microsoft and called ms small biz, or some such. they
will sell me a $10 package, and convert me over for another $10 of
consulting fees.

i cannot run peachtree or cougar or one of those things. they for store fronts.

sounds to me like you are one of those guys who convinces a company that you
can write something newer and better, and they end up married to him/her for 5
years while he debugs and the company goes back to the old software so it can
do business. friend of mine did that. took two years to give up.

I think the FAA & the FBI have had great difficulty switching from"old"
technology to "new" technology. too many bugs to even be able to run. the
library of congress will not archive to CD(good decision).

my software has had bugs, but I have always been able to get the job done in an
extremely efficient manner. paying $100 or 150 or 200 for the latest ug and
having to use a floppy to load is not nearly as dumb as a small business
spending a quarter mil to buy software that one has to learn, modify, and make
work, or hiring a "consultant" to write something better for a complex
diversified small company that need a lot of interactive modules.

how big is this surge protector. I wanted one for my factory, but just did not

You should also worry about a "neutral" protector or notifier. the neural in

Re: [CGUYS] Black Monday - to shop online or not?

2007-11-27 Thread gerald
I got mine on time, and bought two V7 22" lcd monitors for $185 each.

On Sunday, I went to the local Staples to buy a pair of the Kbyte 1gb pc2 DDR
chips for around $100 total. ther were none on the shelf. I asked the asst
manager, he went into the locked back room, and came out with a pair. he did
not put any on the shelf.

why are DDR's more expensive than DDR2's?

Re: [CGUYS] Blue tooth for cell phone - what to look for?

most are now compatible with all others. ear comfort and being able to hear
the thing are the two most important features. most devices lay over the ear,
including the very popular motorolas. I cannot hear them. I have a
plantronics that has the "speaker" that sticks into the ear.

http://www.plantronics.com/north_america/en_US/products/cat1150057/cat5420035

check with somebody like buy.com

http://www.buy.com/retail/searchresults.asp?querytype=home&qu=blue+tooth&qxt=home&display=col&dclksa=1

they usually have a bunch for cheap.

the return policy is important.

my wife's favorite cost something like $15. worked well as a headphone.
failed as a doorstop, and have not been able to replace it.

for my devices, yes it is. I have a nokia 6126 and a plantronics 655. the
plantronics has some noise reduction. the mike is planted against my cheek,
and the speaker is crammed in my ear.

when it is on, neither the nokia speaker or mike are on.

when using the nokia straight, I have trouble keeping the thing in the correct
place to hear. all outside noises are transmitted.

bluetooth is probably not superior to hard wire, but with active dogs in the
car, hard wire can be a problem .

blue tooth is really great when driving on I95, trying to read a map, drink
coffee, and take a message.

in the collection of sales tax, one is acting as a fiduciary agent for the
state. you collect it, you pay it. you don't collect it, you pay it. you
collect it and you don't pay it, it is a felony. not a misdemeanor. not
protected by corporate shield. Maryland has argued that when I quoted $400 for
a transmission(*long time ago) and then charged $300 for parts, and $100 for
labor, not collecting sales tax on the $100 was incorrect. AAmco came in and
argued the case for us, and we won. but splitting out installation may not
work in most cases.

I had a company in Baltimore. we sold a lot of product wholesale into Texas.
I did not do a very good job of collecting reseller certs from the retailers.
Last year Texas came after me for all uncollected sales tax on sales to anyone
for whom I did not have a reseller cert. they went back 7 full years, to 1999.
they are in the process of getting a judgement against me for $250,000 plus
about $250,000 in penalties. I(my company) cannot produce the paperwork, and
those are the laws of the great state of Texas.

Re: [CGUYS] Blue tooth radiation?

2007-11-30 Thread gerald
Most people I see with bluetooth and for that matter cell phones, and in
particular iphones and blackburys seem to suffer from severe brain damage.

I also see similar damage to people who use airport rest rooms, where that
little red lite shines on a person.

passing under power wires has radiation effects probably similar to cell phones.

monitors radiate, so do those wireless keyboards and mice.

I worry more about the cars that run red lights in my neighborhood. For that
reason and that one only, I drive a 5500 lb vehicle with full complement of
airbag, ,,and do not use public toilets.

Re: [CGUYS] Blue tooth radiation?

2007-12-03 Thread gerald
the part that is 2-3mm from your ear is a speaker. the radiation devise is
housed elsewhere in the box. you are attempting to determine the distance of
the mechanical device, which has nothing to do with electric radiation.

I would presume the electronic portion of the blutooth device is much closer,
as the whole thing is only a couple inches long. the electronic transmitter in
my folding cell phone is in the bottom portion of my cell phone, and at least
4" from my ear.

presuming the device transmits non directionally in 3 dimensions, would not the
signal reduce by the cube of the distance? if it were to transmit
directionally, the square root estimate may not work.

most people in my neighbor hood hold the phone about 2' away, directly in front
of themselves while driving down I95. this is to transmit and view images of
the telephone talkers.

Re: [CGUYS] Reader for SDHC media cards

2007-12-08 Thread gerald
I have a new panasonic. however canon, fuji, nikon, all have adapted the new
technology. do a search on SDHC to find out about it. formatted differently,
and up to 32mb in size, and up to 6mb r/w speeds. you can still use old chips
in the cameras, but with the sd (2gig?) chip limit.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/pdf/sdhc.pdf

best buy has a skandisk 4 gig and a reader for $34.

Sony still uses stupid stick, and olympus, XD.

watch out tom, new technology roaring down the road.
you still using that canon FDt from 1970 or do you have a pre war (II) leica
rangefinder?

I've personally had enough new technology with my wife's glossy iMac monitor
screen. she blew blood vessels in both eyes.

http://slawecki.com/Photo%2051.jpg

she worked as a computer analyist for 37 years, and never blew one before.

apple:
Profit Margin (ttm):14.56%
Operating Margin (ttm):18.37%

however,

adobe
Return on Assets (ttm):8.25%
Return on Equity (ttm):14.20%

apple:
Return on Assets (ttm):12.95%
Return on Equity (ttm):28.52%

I guess apple is just smart, and adobe is a gouger

a new generation of flash memory has come out. it is much faster, and not that
much more expensive.

when I bought one of these from bestbuy on stupid sale:

Card-SDSDBR-409 SKU: 7956599

it came with a card reader. an $8 value!!

it is not backward compatable with old sd.

Re: [CGUYS] Are Passwords Obsolete?

2007-12-30 Thread gerald
I have 3 of these 6 digit RSA randomizers that create same code on the little
thingie I have , and another at eTrade. two of them are for eTrade accounts.
(one for me, one for my wife). what with swapping accounts, I spend more time
logging in than I do drinking any more.

could I use a roboform? does rsa or somebody else make randomizer that I could
plug into usb port and use?

. i looked on both the rsa and the roboform website, and cannot figure out
what, how, how much.

Re: [CGUYS] Audio Conversion?

2008-01-01 Thread gerald
I think you sent this to me, instead of to cgz.

when I fly, i want to kill as much sound as possible. i use shure isolation
phones. I cannot hear pilot or FA announcemsnts. cannot hear those damned
babies crying or those asshole conversations for hours on end. i usually fly
transatlantic, and would like to get 8 hrs sleep.

Bose made super noise reduction headphones for the people(rutan?) to do the
around the world nonstop in a carbon phonebooth. noise levels were apparantly
extremely high.

normal NR headphones suck because they do not seal well, and they are hot as
hell. an amazingly high percentage of one's heat dump is through the ears.

http://www.camcorderinfo.com/

it is a difficult site to navagate.

this was there last big look

http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/camcorderinfo-presents-the-great-hd-shootout.htm

things have moved a lot since then. panasonic has new models. AVCHD is now
acceptable, and will probably become the new standard. most shoot 1920 x 1080i
video, some have a hard drive, newer use a sdhc chip.
the jvc in this survey does 530k pixel with each color detector.

I have an fz18 and the sdhc card works in it. I do not know what max sized
card it will address.

it requires a unique reader to connect to the usb port. best buy was selling a
4 gig and a reader for very reasonable price.

there is another family of cards, the extreme. sandisk is one of the makers. I
cannot find information on that card, other than it can exceed the 4 gig sd
limit, and is very fast.

searching pricewatch.com is one way to find low priced memory cards. do not
know if it is the best way.

the fz18 produces right decent pictures for an overblown point and shoot

Re: [CGUYS] Aspire Laptop Comments?

2008-01-06 Thread gerald
bought an Asus laptop for wife for kitchen use. bought it on price alone.
added some ram. still running fine after 2 years of hard use. it is not
transported, which is the real laptop killer. sits on a countertop covered in
flour, olive oil, etc.

when she was employed, she drug a laptop with her everywhere. EDS set up a
special shelf to rebuild her machine. I know none of them ever lasted 2
months without a trip to the shop. I wonder who bought those units she beat to
death when EDS pulled them.

Among others, I own www.slawecki.com, and www.slawecki.net.

I use .com, and have put the items i wish on it.

my wife uses .net...She decided to put those items near and dear to her on
slawecki.net should be no problem, as we have a contract with allnet to allow
30gign on their server. however, godaddy.com has parked their standard
advertising on the site. how do I get that garbage off of there?

i checked the registration, and unless in the very fine print, i have not given
them permission to post on the site. i also have not specifically denied them
the right to post on that site.

what is your big aversion to paying taxes. do you get 1099's from your
customers? if not, you should be filing and paying withholding tax both state
and federal monthly.

if you are buying in one state, and paying the state taxes there, then
transfering the equipment and title to another state and another owner, i'd bet
just about anything that is a no no. you could probably act at their
purchasing agent and purchase the equipment for them and.

37 states have franchise taxes. you gotta pay a tax to practice in that state.
wait til you guys get hit with them. and the forms. makes sales tax a
piece of cake.

sales tax on labor has always been a middlie thing that varies from state to
state. i think VA does not charge tax on food(did not back in the 70's), but
md does. the gas tax and the cigarette tax in va is less than md. it is a
state right. va does not charge the taxes, and the services suck.

texas apparently does not have an income tax, so the state is broke. they

[CGUYS] ebay experiences

2008-01-28 Thread gerald
1. my ebay password is very unstable. as long as firefox holds it in memory,
it works. if I try to enter it, it does not.

2. ebay sends me a notice about every 3 months stating that i must change my
password.

3. i recently made a purchase of "final cut express 4" and got the following
message from ebay:

The following is a notice from eBay Trust & Safety regarding:

Item Number - 320209653865

Item Title - FINAL CUT EXPRESS 4 HD VIDEO EDITING SOFTWARE NEW $199

Our records show that you were a bidder or buyer of one or more of this
seller's items. We recently removed this seller's active listings and suspended
the seller's trading privileges. Due to privacy concerns we cannot share
further details about this seller.

If the seller asks you to complete this transaction outside of eBay, we
strongly recommend that you do not proceed with the transaction. Transactions
for items listed on eBay but then completed off of the eBay platform are not
covered by buyer protection programs offered by eBay and can be highly
indicative of fraud. For more information on Offers to Buy or Sell Outside of
eBay, copy and past the following Help Page link into your browser:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/rfe-spam-non-ebay-sale.html.

If you have already paid for this item but have not received it, you should
take all possible steps to receive reimbursement.

4. this person had a positive rating of 98.5% on about 150 replies.

5. i went to paypal for dispute resolution, and my payment was refunded in one
day???

i have purchased probably a thousand items off of ebay. somewhere around 7-8
years ago, someone stiffed me out of $50. i have twice gotten merchandise that
was not quite up to snuff.

I'm pretty certain that all the mucking about is being done by ebay.

after notify, i cannot get into my account with my password.

my inquires to ebay have indicated they changed the password.

maybe happens with fairly active accounts. i buy (only buy) at least 200 and
maybe bid seriously(am frequently the underbidder)on 4-500 items a year.

buy the thing here. you'll spend too much time in uk trying to find one. if

[CGUYS] No call list

2008-02-18 Thread gerald
the two canidates in my district, wynn and donna ? got about 2.5 million
dollars for the house primary campaign, they spent most of it on deamon
dialers to call residents in the area, and bad mouth the other guy. we got
8-10+ calls a day. all from 877(800) numbers and with a recorded message.

my phone is listed for no call. all home phone. never got a call on either
cell, or on the dedicated fax line. is political campaign calling not part of
the no call? as I recall, if the calls originate from within the state, i
cannot stop them. if that the case, how do i figure out if a particular 800
number is in state or out of state?

Re: [CGUYS] Do Not Call Lists

2008-02-19 Thread gerald
I think one of the reasons this recorded message from an 800 number is so
popular is that it is really cheap.

a hundred 800 number lines probably are no more than $3-4000, and all the
equipment is reusable.

hundred lines, is easily 3000 calls an hour.30,000+ calls a day. million calls
in a month. i know edwards reported 1.7 mil in donations. lotta calls.

Re: [CGUYS] RAM

2008-02-27 Thread gerald
I have a couple of machines that have video chip on board. One cheap compaq
and one cheap ACER. I stuck a couple of cheap memory chips in both, and both
work quite nicely. the compaq I am using right now has an ATI radon express
200 and is happy doing 1600 x 1050 32bit at 60hertz. must go to 1440 x 900 to
do 75 hz.

trying to run a pc with 512 and shared video is not a pc problem. feed it some
ram.

Re: [CGUYS] LCD TVs

2008-03-04 Thread gerald
this is where most of the avs geeks live:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/index.php

if it don't say hd, it ain't. besides that, I think 720i(integrated) qualifies
as hd. then there is 720p and 1080i & p. integrated means the gun paints
every other line, then goes back and paints the in betweens. p(forgot what
it'scalled) throws all 720 or 1080 down each pass.

i think almost all of them now come with the ability to receive and play HD
broadcasts, but do not presume. I think most broadcasts and cable is 720, not
1080. bluray is 1080, i think. my wife's new camcorder is 1080.

now adays, 1080p is readily available and not for much extra.
samsung(and maybe others by now sell a dlp led. it is not thin. not too
thick. has better contrast and brightness than an lcd. lot cheaper also. I
think the buy.com deals on samsung probably come direct from samsung. you can
go to bestbuy or circuitcity to see and compare the various units.

I see that this week's special on samsung is $1150 delivered for the 56". or
the 61 with a stand is 1629 delivered. that is a deal also, if you need a
stand. will have new specials in a week or so.

for the long of it, go to wikipedia.org

Re: [CGUYS] LCD TV

2008-03-04 Thread gerald
the $100 dvd upconverter boxes are amazing. the tech GuRu at the WSJ said he
could not tell the difference between regular dvd up converted(to 1080p), and
bluray.

from comcast, you have to rent the box and pay for hd content. I am not
certain but what you do not have to pay extra to get channels 200 to 275, which
is where most of the hd content is placed. channel 3-26 frequently are not hd,
but the same program is on 200-275 in hd. not a lot is in hd. to get hd on
sports, frequently they have to run at about 5 frames per second as they do not
have enough light. bonkiety bonkiety bonk. stop motion.

most of the TV hd is in 1 or 2.0 sound.(one source or 2). even rock concerts
are single channel, or stereo at best. the best productions that I have seen
on a regular basis is NASCAR, it's worth watching nascar to see what can be
done. they have cameras everywhere except the rest rooms. from cars fwd,
backward, and on the rite hand side of the car, photoing the driver. there
must be at least 50 active cameras. they broadcast in 5.1(2 main, 2 side, i
center, and wulfer). if you can suck in the channels with an antenna, you can
get hd for free.

the upconvert of standard to hd on my samsung sucks(for lack of a better word)

Re: [CGUYS] More memory needed?

2008-03-05 Thread gerald
more memory will help. there are 4 common flavors these days. their is DDR and
DDR2. then each comes in "laptop" and "desktop", although a few desk tops use
laptop(the new macs). criterion will tell you what minimum speed you need.
400mhz was mentioned by someone. faster is acceptable. sometimes the faster
chips are cheaper??? particularly when they are on sale. i have not had
trouble with any off brands, and do cram in a lot of chips for friends.

I presume you can mix and match size and speed, since you have 3 slots.

If unsure of what to get, i think circuit city and best buy are the best
places, as they will accept returns, even on memory chips. just keep
everything. there is also staples and office depot. among the 4, at least
one will usually have super cheap chips available. staples will not put them
on the floor. ask the manager for the chips.

the prices on the web sites do NOT match the sunday brochure prices. even with
the same part number sometimes. CC usually ships free for over $50 purchase.
so does staples. CC seems to be having a chip sale today. $30 for a 1gig
ofjust about everything.

chips are easy to install, if you cannot do it, ask your daughter. all you
need is a screw driver to take the screws off the back of the case, and a
flashlite to see the guts of the machine. if you live in an area with a CC,
pull the chip and go down there for an exact match. just remember faster is ok.

Merriam-webster definition:

1often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of

severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

Re: [CGUYS] Investment Tracking Recommendations?

2008-03-11 Thread gerald
i think the best known fund that tracks that is the Vangard index 500 fund. i
think it is the s&p 500 marketbasket, less about a half % annually for
expenses. since '76, shows 11.6% annual return. 10 year, however, shows only
3.99% return. i do not recall exact numbers, but only a modest percentage
(10%) of mutual funds beat the dow or the s&p500.

probably better than passbook, and more stable than common stock funds are AAA
rated preferred stocks. one can purchase one's own stocks for $10 for a
purchase of 10k, 100k, or 1m.

the problem with all individual purchases is:

1. the bid-asked system of purchase. small investors get the short end of the
stick

2. information chain. the big guys know more, and get there firstist with the
mostest.

3. the small guy advantage, small positions are taken. the big guy has to
buy/sell 10+m for a position. this affects the market.

Re: [CGUYS] Investment Tracking Recommendations?

2008-03-11 Thread gerald
most trades in T-bills to the common man require a very large spread/discount.
the difference between the buy and sell price for modest quantities(under
100k) cost one close to 1% of interest. certainly 1/2% interest. the best
place to lookand buy for smallest spread i have found is:

http://www.zionsbank.com/zd_bonds_about-guest.jsp

if you plan to buy new treasuries, then the federal givernment is the best deal

http://www.savingsbonds.gov/

you pay no discount to buy.

[CGUYS] 6% md tax

2008-03-15 Thread gerald
the wall street journal weighs in:

High Tech Tax
March 15, 2008; Page A10

In the cinematic classic, "Revenge of the Nerds," a group of college outcasts
fights back against the local campus bigshots to regain their place in the
world. A real-life sequel is playing out in Maryland, where a new tax on
computer services has business groups, techies and legislators rallying around
the pocket-protector set.
[Martin O'Malley]

Under a bill passed in November, such tech services as Web design, computer
repair and programming would all get hit with a 6% tax statewide. If the tax
isn't repealed before it takes effect in July, it would be one of the most
burdensome regimes in the nation on the growing industry. On Thursday, Governor
Martin O'Malley, a Democrat who originally balked at repealing the tax, joined
the chorus against it. The state's technology sector is critical, he said, and
"not an advantage we want to weigh down."

Proponents say the $200 million in revenue the tax is projected to garner is
indispensable when Maryland is already facing a budget shortfall. Senate
President Mike Miller insists that "We can't afford to cede to businesses $200
million in revenue without an alternative."

Wait until they see what happens to revenue when business begins to leave the
state. Many Maryland companies and small businesses say they could be forced to
relocate if the tax isn't repealed. And nearby states are courting potential
departees: 70 Maryland computer services firms got a letter last month from
Delaware economic director Judy McKinney-Cherry to encourage companies to
"include Delaware when you are contemplating an expansion."

Other states have tried similar tax experiments -- with dismal results. In
Pennsylvania, a 6% computer services tax was repealed after it handicapped the
state's ability to compete with other states for business. Ditto Connecticut,
which enacted a 6% computer consulting tax in the late 1980s, only to walk it
back in 1997 as the importance of the computer industry became apparent, and
business associations revolted.

The Tax Foundation ranks Maryland 24th among the 50 states in overall tax
burden after a big individual income tax hike last year, but it is still
seventh best in corporate taxes. The new tech levy won't help that reputation
and in particular will hit the small businesses that drive its economy. While
larger companies may simply move their IT operations to other states, small
businesses will lose money on tighter margins, or watch clients bring their IT
services in-house.

Maryland legislators won't control their spending habits, so they keep imposing
tax increases that give more people an incentive to leave the state. That's the
real revenge of the nerds.

in case you are not famaliar with the journal, there has never been a tax that
they do not hate.

. this editorial is full of holes. taxes on md services to maryland entities
would apply to in and out of state companies. there should be no tax on
services performed in maryland for non maryland companies.

if you have the old boxes and are the owner, you may have a chance to get the
disks for $10 or so from ms. the problem is in finding the number to call.

[CGUYS] CGUYS] Investment Tracking Recommendations?

2008-03-19 Thread gerald
i have my accounts and my wife's accounts with etrade. i get in with password
and rsa time code device. i can get into mine, or my wife's account, but not
both at once. since the passcode for her account seems to be about twenty
digits or so, it is a real pain to log out and log back in.

what is a reasonable workaround? if i partition the hd(i have plenty of room)
and put one account on each

never mind put one in mozilla and one in ms ie. they don't see each other.

Re: [CGUYS] Email Scam?

2008-03-20 Thread gerald
does not sound to me like a person with English as a first language. maybe a
Nigerian who has moved to SA.

for the past 20 years, my company sold and shipped to many foreign countries.
stuff was a bit bulky, so we frequently shipped to freight forwarders in miami,
nj, texas, etc. cash equivalent up front, including S&H. issue what is called
a pro forma invoice in the trade.

the prices are not listed on this website. most art sites also have a full
disclosure of T&C. person wants a discount on 3 pieces?

if scherer cannot sell the stuff, just throw it away, do not add the
embarrassment of paying S&H charges to ship to another planet.

we got to the place that we did not offer free samples to any new customers.

there are a lot of counterfit cashiers checks out there. if a bad one comes

[CGUYS] copy of office not genuine

i have office 2003. i just started getting this error message. it states that
this copy was from a large company.

rather than try to fight ms, since i bought this copy at least 5 years ago on
ebay(probably), i bought a copy of the new office2007 one surprise is that if i
bought the copy after march5(i bought mine on march3), i will get an updated
copy of office(2010) when it comes out, for free.

my question is, can i get away with overrighting office 2003 with 2007. can i
get away with that, or will i end up with a mess?

[CGUYS] 3.0 drives

2011-06-15 Thread gerald
i bought a 1T WD drive, and a 2T seagate. the WD is terrible. it is
hard to load. once loaded, it is difficult to find. there is supposed
to be software with it, but i cannot get to it. i decided to send it
back. i downloaded the WD upgrade, and software for something. i
cannot delete it by standard delete techniques. the seagate on the
other hand loaded like a piece of cake. i got an unnessary piece of
software called memeo plus, or somesuch. it has as many ads as norton.
hope it goes away at the 30 day trial period.

i have purchased a 2T seagate 800/fw for wife's machine. had to buy the
800 f/w seagate interconnect. was only $20, and with only 100 for the
drive, all seems pretty reasonable to me.

Re: [CGUYS] 3.0 drives

2011-06-23 Thread gerald
the f/w800 was an easy install. after all, there is a f/w800 plug on
the back of the screen.

the usb 3.0 is another matter. MS does not support usb 3.0. the pci
card did not want to load. the 3.0 driver did not want to load. i
think i finally have it loaded, but the device driver shows a 2/21/06
MS2.0 driver in the disk driver section,

in the usb controllers>usb 3.0 root hub, it shows a "VIA 1/7/2011" driver.

when i tested drive speeds by dumping a gig of jpegs, looks like i get
about 1GB per minute. the literature talks about 1 Gbit/sec. i think i
divide by 8 to get bites. that's about 40 gb/minute. need help to fix
the problem
