Re: [Elecraft] Noise-cancelling headphones mystery

2018-12-09 Thread Jim Brown

On 12/9/2018 8:40 AM, CUTTER DAVID via Elecraft wrote:

Noise cancelling that I've come across is limited to low/medium frequencies.

Yes. Others have correctly identified the reason, but I'll go into a bit
of detail for clarity. Noise cancellation works by amplifying a tiny mic
on the outside of an earphone and feeding it to the headphones so that
the acoustic output is out of polarity with the noise that is
acoustically coupled to the ear. For deep cancellation, the sound from
the mic and the sound that reaches the ear directly must be of precisely
the same amplitude AND precisely the same phase (but out of polarity).

This is particularly difficult to achieve, because 1) the headphones
themselves attenuate the direct coupling of the noise to the ear, and
that attenuation is not flat, and it varies depending on subtle
differences in how the earphones fit/seal to the listener's head; 2)
Phase is a variable, not a constant, and increases in direct proportion
both to frequency and the distance that sound travels. 3) The small
distance between the noise-sensing mic and the ear results in phase
shift that increases with frequency. 4) The earphones themselves have
non-flat phase response. 5) Directivity of both the microphone and the
ear covered by the headphone is another variable.

The above leads to these conclusions. 1) Low frequency noise is far
easier to cancel than higher frequency noise. Noise produced by fans in
the KPA1500 has significant higher frequency spectra. 2) Extreme care is
needed in the design of noise cancelling headphones. I would expect
products of serious audio companies like Sennheiser and Bose to be
better performers. 3) I would expect to see new designs using DSP to
introduce delay to reduce the time difference resulting from mic
placement and equalization for non-flat amplitude and phase response of
the total system.

K9MA says that Radio Sport headphones effectively kill the sound. I have
no problem believing that -- they're designed for use in high noise
environments. But don't buy a pair until you've tried them on --
headphone comfort is a VERY individual thing that depends on the shape
of our heads. Some contesting friends like them, so I've tried them on
at several hamfests, and found them an instrument of torture. I couldn't
imagine wearing them for even a few hours.

2018-12-09 Thread Jack Spitznagel
See if you can borrow a hi quality aviation noise cancelling headset to try
out. I have the now discontinued Sennheiser S1’s which work extremely well in
many situations including with a single engine open cockpit aircraft, riding
mowers, tractors, field day, etc. They have the added nicety of high quality
adaptive noise cancelling and efficient noise cancelling the mic audio as well.
Don’t look for “Heil Hi Fidelity” response of the mic. You will sound like you
are on an aircraft radio but they cancel noise better than anything I have
tested.

There a number of sets out there that probably perform at that level. David
Clark, Bose, Lightspeed and others... I just happened on to a great deal for
the Sennheisers. All run above the $500 mark retail...

Re: [Elecraft] Noise-cancelling headphones mystery

2018-12-09 Thread David Woolley
Noise cancelling headphones rely on the distance between microphone and
ear being a small fraction of the audio wavelength. At high
frequencies, that will be impossible to achieve, and, even if you put in
a compensating delay, the path to the ear is going to depend on the
direction of the source.

Re: [Elecraft] Noise cancelling headphones

2018-08-10 Thread Michael Blake via Elecraft
I also used a QC15 and then moved to the QC25 and found that either is a very
comfortable headset to wear for long periods of time. The little microphone
that “dangles” in the cord actually works quite well with both the K3s and KX3
in most surroundings. All that it requires is a good TRRS jack to two TRS male
plugs adapter.

I have tried a couple of the add on boom mics but I prefer to use my desk
microphone (Shure SM57 or EV RE50N/D B) most of the time.

Re: [Elecraft] Noise cancelling headphones

2018-08-05 Thread Gary Smith
Another of my 2 cents on this topic...

While not for transmitting, there is a
worthy consideration for wireless Rx
headphones, the Gray Ghost headsets I use
for metal detecting. There is a 1/4" plug
which goes to the radio & is the
transmitter. The headphones pick up this
Tx and reproduce the sound.

Both the headphones and transmitter do
require being charged, this may be a deal
breaker for some. My Minelab CTX3030
detector offers some 50 tones in the
discovery process and they sound beautiful
with this headset.

They are mono with very low latency, when
swinging the detector, even a little delay
is unacceptable and would give incorrect
info, so I expect the response would be
the same for our needs.

I got my set from here:

http://www.colonialmetaldetectors.com/gray
-ghost-wireless-fbs.html

Just google for Gray Ghost headphones.

Re: [Elecraft] Noise cancelling headphones

2018-08-05 Thread Mark Goldberg
I used to design aircraft audio systems for a living, but have been retired
a year. The A20 is a nice headset and the audio quality from the mic and
headphones is very good, over the wired connection, for safety services
(communication with air traffic control).

Listening to stereo entertainment via Bluetooth probably uses the AD2P
protocol which is stereo and can be pretty decent qualtiy. I don't know for
sure for this headset, but when any Bluetooth device I know of does phone
calls and uses the Mic, it switches to the HSP or HFP protocol, which is
mono and in my opinion, sounds like crap for both TX and RX. It is lower
bandwidth and more compressed. HFP version 1.6 added better audio encoding,
but I do not know if it is widely used. It would be a shame to take a $1k
headset and make it sound like a $5 headset.

I would think there might be some sort of headset to wireless TX/RX adapter
that might be available. Jupiter Avionics makes something that claims to do
that. I bet it is expensive and I do not see any mention of a TSO
certification on the data sheet. I guess if you are not using it for
aviation, you may not care. Lots of small aircraft use uncertified stuff
anyway.

Again, good luck in your search.

Re: [Elecraft] Noise cancelling headphones

2018-08-05 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
Thanks Mark,

According to a tech at a one of the aviation stores, the latest versions of
the A20 will allow using the headset/mike to access a paired device such as
a smartphone, both to and from. Use it by muting the phone mike and
talking/listening via the A20.

Talking on a phone in a small plane has the same audio issues as radio
communications with flight service without noise cancellation, etc. The A20
handles that kind of problem very well.

The battery and Bluetooth are in an accessible blob on the A20 cord. But
the idea of 1K$ to start with, and then dropping that 1K$ out of warranty
to remove the cord beyond the blob gives me the hives.

Re: [Elecraft] Noise cancelling headphones

2018-08-04 Thread Gary Smith
I feel impelled to comment here. I use the
Bose QC-15 and since the model is out of
production, they are quite cheap on
fleabay.

1. If they are out of warranty, broken and
say the serial is removed, $100 to Bose
repair (keep your old cable) & your old
set will get you a refurbished pair. I
understand they will upgrade you if the
repair item is no longer available.

2. Headset Buddy by Clear mic provides a
perfect fitting boom mic for the QC-15 &
also for the older Bose model (same fit)
The microphone is excellent in audio
quality albeit the cord is with a smaller
diameter than the original from Bose. I
have several sets of these for the long
haul.

Caveat, maybe... To the bad, with Headset
Buddy version 1 which is all I have used;
the phones are reversed in stereo, L is
heard on the R & vice versa. HOWEVER... I
just went to their old page for it and it
says that version is discontinued for $19.
and there is now a new and improved
version and they say they listened to
customers reviews & suggestions. Perhaps
the L/R issue is now resolved. The new
price is $29. The old ones were worth
every penny, I'm sure these are even
better.

Re: [Elecraft] Noise cancelling headphones

2018-08-04 Thread Peter W2IRT
The first three are easy. The fourthnot so much. If you're willing to
forego wireless you might still be able to find the UFlyMic add-on for the
QC-15 headset. They stopped making them for amateur radio applications a while
back, unfortunately.

I've never seen a Bluetooth ANR over-the-ear headset.

This thread seems to be read by some who are familiar with headsets, but
I’m asking a slightly different question...

A) I am looking for a headset/mike combination, with *all* the following.

1) over-the-ear dual headset
2) noise-cancelling headset
3) active noise-cancelling boom microphone
4) wireless, either bluetooth or wireless to USB dongle, bluetooth
preferred, wireless is *required*.

I have tried endless hours of searching, dozens and dozens of different
search parms but cannot get Google, eBay or Amazon to make a list with all
the required conditions. Something always gets ignored.

I know that a Bose A20 aircraft headset can be modified using the battery
and Bluetooth parts only of the plug/cordset. That’s modifying a 1K$
headset.

There used to be an “HP8000” that seemed to fit the bill, but only sold in
EU and Asia. That also was called QD834. It apparently not made now and
stock gone.

Looking for an answer from someone that knows a manufacturer that makes a
model that matches A) 1-4) above.

Thank you, thank you, thank you if you know the answer.

Re: [Elecraft] Noise cancelling headphones

2018-08-03 Thread Mark Goldberg
Amazon shows the HP8000 available from third party sellers at wildly
varying prices. Sometimes they are bad or fake unfortunately. They claim
new, but don't have enough info listed to tell if it meets your criteria.

As far as I know, aviation headsets will not have wireless for the main
headset or microphone as it is not reliable enough to be certifiable. They
will have auxiliary bluetooth inputs for entertainment.

I do not know anything that meets your criteria.

Good luck in your search,

Re: [Elecraft] Noise cancelling headphones

2018-08-03 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV

Is it Sony WH-1000XM2? I have one and love it. It is pricey but you get
what you pay for. I tried both Bose and Sony, and chose Sony because it
seems better with noise cancelling. When I fly alone for business, I use
it with low volume music from my iphone, and I barely hear the engine
noise. When I fly with my family, I don't get that luxury. LOL

I also use it as ear mufflers when I use my lawnmower. I can listen to
music or podcast with very low engine noise from the mower. This is
great. I wire it when I use for radios.

2018-08-03 Thread Bill Frantz
I use a set of Sennheiser noise canceling phones, mainly for
ARES/RACES works when providing communication for parades.
Combined with a noise canceling speaker/mic that has a jack for
the phones they provide enough isolation from the marching bands
to make communication possible. They are also useful for
quieting airplanes, but since I once fell asleep at a Jefferson
Airplane concert, I really don't have a problem putting up with
noisy environments.

Those of us who wear hearing aids have an advantage. I just turn mine
off when the plane is in the air. It works well for me, like 60dB
reduction in my right ear, so I choose to sit on the right side of the

I've had them for a year or two and they work well on steady noise like

they're very comfortable. I find them to be a great compromise between
performance and price, compared to Bose.

Re: [Elecraft] Noise cancelling headphones

2018-08-02 Thread K9MA
I spent years, lots of effort, and lots of money trying to mitigate
amplifier fan noise. Many kinds of noise cancelling headphones failed,
including one aircraft type. I even tried putting an early NC headset
inside of a pair of earmuff type ear protectors.  I built a cabinet to
enclose the amplifiers, but IT's fan was noisier than the amplifiers.
Finally bought a passive Radiosport headset. By far the best, though I
still think putting the KPA1500 in the other room would be better. As
soon as the remote software is available.

Well, sort of, Tony. In the aviation world, conversions kits have
been marketed for popular (in aviation circles) headsets to convert
them to noise canceling. They weren't black box plug-in devices,
but rather a kit of microphones and electronics mounted in each
earpiece and required some disassembly of the existing earpieces. I
believe they were made for David Clark and Flightcom headsets, and
maybe a few others. The result was a significant improvement over the
 original passive headset

Right. Successful noise cancelling requires that the resulting acoustic
output AS COUPLED TO THE EAR CANAL precisely match the acoustic noise that
GETS THROUGH THE HEADPHONES TO THE EAR CANAL (caps added for
emphasis) in both magnitude and phase, and that the two acoustic signals are
out of polarity. That means that the mic picking up the noise be very close
to the headphones, the distance between the mic, the transducer, and the ear
must be compensated, and the relative response, both magnitude and phase,
must be precisely compensated. That's a VERY difficult design problem, and
a really good solution is only practical when everything is built as an
integrated package, with dedicated mic, headphone transducers, and
electronics.

Re: [Elecraft] Noise Cancelling Headphones

2013-12-27 Thread Mark
Besides comfort which is highly personal, I found two other performance issues
with noise canceling headsets. First, the cheaper ones hiss. This is hard to
tell
with demos at stores since they insist on making you listen with music on. The
hiss drives me nuts on the quieter bands. Second, I found that to my ears some
headphones make rtty diddles and cw sound wrong. I assume this is a weakness
in the noise cancelation which doesn't like non music or non voice material.

It annoyed me that bose was so premium priced and I went through several cheaper
ones before finally getting a refurb qc15 at a bose outlet store. The headsets
were

Bose qc15 , best noise canceling, no hiss, comfortable
Altec Lansing hissy, but usable
iGo, not hissy, usable, not so comfortable, small ear cups
No name from CVS, distorts tones, uncomfortable
Sony MDR-NC22, in ear, noise canceling not too bad, I can't wear them for too
long
Logitech (no longer made model). Real nice, but broke after a few contests
logitech
Refunded entire purchase price.

Yamaha cm500. No noise canceling, fairly comfortable, mic bracket is loose after
Several years
Heil proset. No noise canceling, not as comfortable as cm500 but better made
Heil bm10, no noise canceling, on ear. Just for something different
Heil proset plus, just don't like how it fits me.

It is handy to have several choices and types of earphones, as changing from say
headset to earbuds to on ear headphones helps you survive long contests as
each rests, and ends up hurting, a different part of your ears/head.

warranty. However, Bose will replace a failed headset out of warranty
with the same or the next generation of headset for $100. I spotted
for the new generation and these are lighter and at least as
effective as the older Bose QC2. It's still worth my time to check

wonderful. The noise cancelling though is almost 100% perfect; my old Alpha
with its blower is 18 from my head and with the QC-15 on I

can't but just barely tell the amp is on or off.

I was thinking about getting a headset with a mic though Bose does make
the A20 for pilots, at $1100 for what is essentially the QC-15 with a boom
mic, I'll pass. They do make a A100T snap on mic for the
QC15 but they are $250 for just the mic. I was referred by quite a few
people here to check out the Yamaha CM500 for a fine mic, quick match to the
K3 and comfortable headsets at $59.

I'm so happy with the Bose QC15 that I'm going to keep using these and am
going to need to figure out another way to get a mic into the
K3 in a way that will be convenient for contesting should I ever decide to
do a phone contest. I have an Electrovoice RE-10 which would probably be
nice needs no power maybe I can make a clamp-on

boom that I can remove from the desk once the contest is over. I also

have several condenser mics but they are for recording and would be excess
and just problematic for ham use.

Anyone have any suggestion of a removable boom mic other than the A100T that
will attach to the QC-15 and make it simple to use and then remove when the
contest is over? I don't want to use velcro.

True noise cancelling headphones will cut noise far, far beyond anything
acoustic isolation from ear pads can accomplish.

I have a pair of Audio-Technia QuierPoint ATH-ANC1. They are on ear

so I didn't recommend them to the person asking for ones that cover the
ears. They are very comfortable for me.

When I fly, as the roar and whine of the big jet engines invades the

I just switch them on and all the racket becomes a quite background purr.

I often wear them for the entire 11 hours from the west coast of the USA

Europe, even if I'm not listening to any programs.

The active circuitry in true noise-cancelling phones inverts the sound
arriving and so actually cancels it out.

The circuit takes a few seconds to adapt so when the attendant brings my

The greatest isolation is achieved with custom ear molds, which you buy from

Or more generic
http://www.modmic.com

Or DIY

The qc15 comes with a mic as well but not a boom style, just on the cord like
for iPhones.
The qc15 was more comfortable for me in a 32 hour single op rtty contest than
my other
choices. The noise canceling does not have the hiss or the distortion of rtty
side tone and
noise like the cheaper noise canceling 'phones do.

I have decided for my limited ssb operation I think my cm500 or heil proset

The noise pickup must be very close to the ear piece to allow proper and
constant phase for effective canceling. Having a separate box would mean the
phase would change if you moved your head so would't work.

I haven't noticed any noise blanker effect. There are surely minor errors in
the canceling process but Bose seems the have it pretty well worked out. iPod

cancelling capability and my wife's embroidery machine is severely limiting
 my radio operations.

I have already looked at the Yamaha CM500's because they come so highly
recommended on this group. If they're noise cancelling, I cannot find that
 information about them.

I want something that will last. The MDR-V6's have lasted at least 10 years
if not longer. I've only had to replace the earpads.

I want something that *covers* my ear *not* something that sits *on* my ear.
Those that sit *on* my ears are uncomfortable after a very short while.

Being a retired audio pro who has done a lot of recording, I have a lot
of pro mics, including several RE16s. Before I discovered the CM500
(thanks to W6XU, another audio pro), I used an RE16 in my ham station on
a boom stand. It worked quite well.

The hookup of a pro dynamic mic to ham gear is very simple. Pro mics are
wired balanced via shielded twist pair cable to a three-pin connector
called an XL. Pin 1 is the shield, Pin 2 is high, Pin 3 is return.
To connect a dynamic mic like the RE10, wire Pin 2 to mic in on the rig,
wire Pin 3 to mic return on the rig, and connect Pin 1 to the chassis. I
made up some adapters for the various rigs that I used that mic with.

Nearly all ham mics have a peaked response in the range of 3 kHz to
compensate for the rolloff of SSB filters, both on RX and TX. This was,
I believe, first developed by Shure about 40 years ago, and you can see
it in the response of their communications mics. Pro mics don't have
this peak (or if they do, it's in the range of 8-10 kHz), so TXEQ must
be adjusted to provide that peak. I used the same low frequency rolloff
for the RE10 that I use now for the CM500 -- the three lowest frequency
bands max cut, the fourth cut by about half, tweaked by ear based on the
reports of a known good listener. For the high end, I boosted the top
band by about 10 dB, the next highest band by a few dB, again tweaked on
the basis of reports from a good listener.

With rigs other than a K3 that don't have TXEQ, I added a capacitor in
series with the mic wiring to the rig input and a resistor between the
rig mic input and mic signal return. The resistor was about 470 ohms,
and the capacitor value was chosen so that the network produced a strong
rolloff below 2 kHz -- in other words, a sloped response that peaked
around 3 kHz. I got very good audio reports from this simple setup with
a TS850, an Omni V, an FT1000MP, and a K2.

I modified the K2 to add a low frequency rolloff around 400 Hz also to
increase the mic gain by about 6 dB. I did this simply by changing the
values of a few resistors and capacitors early in the audio signal
chain. The purpose of the mod was simple -- with most ham mics, the K2
is a bit low on gain, so I wanted to hit the limiter harder. I also
wanted to minimize the wasted LF energy, and also prevent that LF energy
from activating the limiter.

Right. Successful noise cancelling requires that the resulting acoustic
output AS COUPLED TO THE EAR CANAL precisely match the acoustic noise
that GETS THROUGH THE HEADPHONES TO THE EAR CANAL (caps added for
emphasis) in both magnitude and phase, and that the two acoustic signals
are out of polarity. That means that the mic picking up the noise be
very close to the headphones, the distance between the mic, the
transducer, and the ear must be compensated, and the relative response,
both magnitude and phase, must be precisely compensated. That's a VERY
difficult design problem, and a really good solution is only practical
when everything is built as an integrated package, with dedicated mic,
headphone transducers, and electronics.

The best, and most comfortable, noise isolating headphones I know of are the
Etymotic Research ER4-series in-ear earsets, I own two pairs, and wore out
one of the cables. They come with 3-4 generic ear fittings, and I found one
of them to work well for me -- good isolation and comfort. Cost was about
$200 eight years ago when I bought them. The greatest isolation is achieved
with custom ear molds, which you buy from an audiologist who fits them to
 your ear canal.

Jim,

It takes longer to gouge in-ear phones out of your ear canal than it does to
fling off a pair of over-ear cans. That's the problem. A piece of radio gear
may at any instant decide to go ballistic and produce a loud buzz or whistle

True noise cancelling headphones will cut noise far, far beyond anything
acoustic isolation from ear pads can accomplish.

I have a pair of Audio-Technia QuierPoint ATH-ANC1. They are on ear
types

so I didn't recommend them to the person asking for ones that cover the
ears. They are very comfortable for me.

When I fly, as the roar and whine of the big jet engines invades the
cabin,
I just switch them on and all the racket becomes a quite background
purr.

I often wear them for the entire 11 hours from the west coast of the
USA to

Europe, even if I'm not listening to any programs.

The active circuitry in true noise-cancelling phones inverts the sound
arriving and so actually cancels it out.

The circuit takes a few seconds to adapt so when the attendant brings my

I appreciate all the replies.

I learned a couple of things:

1. Noise-cancelling technology is not cheap, and

2. It's probably best that I actually audition (I think that's what
someone called it) the headphones.

I really do not need anything that will accept a mic. I am about 90% CW,
7% data, and 3% voice. For the little that I am on voice, I have the MH2
mic.

Most folks that responded recommended the Bose Quiet Comfort 15's.

In reference to number 1 above, I really had no idea noise-cancelling
headphones would be so expensive, but you get what you pay for. A review
site I found was www.head-fi.org. The Bose QC15 were rated #3 and
followed the Sennheiser HD 380 Pro (#1 and not sure if they're noise
cancelling or sound blocking) and the PSB M4U 2 (#2). However, like
eHam.net, it's all subjective - folks either like the headphones or
don't and there's no analytical data to back up their findings.

The Audio Technic QuietPoint phones I mentioned before are still under $80
on Amazon. But they are on-ear types that I chose for small size when folded
up to fit in my briefcase. Besides, being noise cancelling, isolating my
ears from ambient sounds is not very important and I don't find them
uncomfortable on long flights.

They, along with many other Audio-Technica noise cancelling headphones that
do cover your ears are available on Amazon. Here's a tinyurl link:

http://tinyurl.com/mbbafjs

The ones I have are at the top.

Do they work as well as the high-priced phones? I have no idea. I don't have
a store nearby where I can try them side-by-side. Besides, the high-priced
units like Bose would have to come with free Champagne before I'd consider
spending that much money on phones considering how well the cheaper ones
work.

Note that they do not suppress speech (or a crying baby). They work very,
very well on steady noise (like fans or jet engines). You switch them on and
a few seconds later the racket suddenly fades into the distant background.

I appreciate all the replies.

I learned a couple of things:

1. Noise-cancelling technology is not cheap, and

2. It's probably best that I actually audition (I think that's what
someone called it) the headphones.

I really do not need anything that will accept a mic. I am about 90% CW, 7%
data, and 3% voice. For the little that I am on voice, I have the MH2 mic.

Most folks that responded recommended the Bose Quiet Comfort 15's.

In reference to number 1 above, I really had no idea noise-cancelling
headphones would be so expensive, but you get what you pay for. A review
site I found was www.head-fi.org. The Bose QC15 were rated #3 and followed
the Sennheiser HD 380 Pro (#1 and not sure if they're noise cancelling or
sound blocking) and the PSB M4U 2 (#2). However, like eHam.net, it's all
subjective - folks either like the headphones or don't and there's no
analytical data to back up their findings.

Worth the money is personal taste perhaps. I tried several noise
cancelling headsets from the common passive variety with excellent
sound-proofing to several with the electronic noise removal. Without
a doubt the most comfortable and most effective headsets I compared
were the Bose QC-2. That headphone had issues and was out of
warranty. However, Bose will replace a failed headset out of warranty
with the same or the next generation of headset for $100. I spotted
for the new generation and these are lighter and at least as
effective as the older Bose QC2. It's still worth my time to check
out new ones in the off-chance something will beat the QC-15 but to
date audio quality and ambient sound removal-wise, this is it.

Re: [Elecraft] Noise Cancelling Headphones

2013-12-26 Thread Edward R Cole
Several years ago I ordered StennHeiser on-ear noise-cancelling
headphones for reducing noise on aircraft. This was not a luxury
purchase but following orders of my audiologist to protect my hearing
always when flying.

Previously, I had to remove hearing aids and insert foam ear-plugs,
which meant I was totally deaf for any in-flight conversation. The
StennHeiser's cost me about $150, and did reduce noise slightly, but
were very uncomfortable to wear with hearaids. Removing hearing aids
and I was back in my silent incommunicado world.

So I bought the $300 Bose QC2 (QC15 were not made back then) with
comfortable around-ear muff. This proved to be a good investment
later when I upgraded to Phonac OTR hearing aids which would
absolutely be incompatible with on the ear styles. I gave my
StennHeiser to my then-new wife who only used them a couple times.

I have not tried them in the noisy shack when I run the 8877 blower
(because I am running eme digital modes which are a text mode). Soon
I will be trying to run CW eme and the Bose may help a lot to
minimize blower noise so I can copy extreme weak signals.

BTW I have a pair of Sony MDR-V600 stereo headphones that have done
good service for copying weak signals for over a decade. They are
over the ear muffs which I must use with my OTR hearing aids.

Recently, I have been playing with the NR settings of the K3 to find
a good compromise with quieting vs distortion of sounds (F1-2 works
fairly well for me as any distorting of sound makes it harder to
understand speech). For weak CW cranking down the bandwidth to
100-Hz is the best vs NR. Definition: weak CW -6 dB SNR...signal
strengths about -170 dBm.

I have the Bose Quiet Comfort 15 I use with the K3 for CW weak signal work.
Perfect for field day with the generator hammering away outside the tent. You
can disconnect the audio lead and use 'em for quieting on airplanes, etc. They
fit over the ear and the seal is effective and comfortable.

They use one AAA battery which lasts for 24 to 30 hours of use.

The Radiosport RS 20 headphones are the way to go. They're not cheap,
but they really do the job. They have NO electronic circuitry to give
RFI problems, just 24 dB of noise reduction due to their excellent
acoustic isolation. When I have them on with any receiver audio at all
going I can't hear the phone ring on my operating desk. They're also
extremely comfortable -- the only headphones I've ever used that let me
operate the full 24 hours of Sweepstakes with zero discomfort. Their
build quality is light years beyond the cheap plastic construction of
the Heil, Bose or Yamaha phones. The RS 60 has the same headset with the
addition of a boom microphone for phone operation.

I tried them, and found them to be VERY VERY uncomfortable, to the point
of being instruments of torture. I'm a contester, and often am in the
chair for 20-30 hours in a weekend. I couldn't wear the Radiosport cans
for an hour.

I'd rate the acoustic seal of CM500s comparable to Sony MDR7506 /
MDR-V6, all of which I've owned and like a lot. In other words, if
you're not happy with the MDR-V6, you won't be happy with the CM500. :)
I have heard that east coast contesters love the Bose noise cancelling
headphones, but I've never heard them. I did try a pair of Sennheiser
noise cancelling headphones almost 20 years ago, and they seemed to
work, but I wasn't being critical, and that was 20 years ago. :)

The best, and most comfortable, noise isolating headphones I know of are
the Etymotic Research ER4-series in-ear earsets, I own two pairs, and
wore out one of the cables. They come with 3-4 generic ear fittings, and
I found one of them to work well for me -- good isolation and comfort.
Cost was about $200 eight years ago when I bought them. The greatest
isolation is achieved with custom ear molds, which you buy from an
audiologist who fits them to your ear canal.

Re: [Elecraft] Noise Cancelling Headphones

2013-12-25 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
True noise cancelling headphones will cut noise far, far beyond anything
acoustic isolation from ear pads can accomplish.

I have a pair of Audio-Technia QuierPoint ATH-ANC1. They are on ear types
so I didn't recommend them to the person asking for ones that cover the
ears. They are very comfortable for me.

When I fly, as the roar and whine of the big jet engines invades the cabin,
I just switch them on and all the racket becomes a quite background purr.

I often wear them for the entire 11 hours from the west coast of the USA to
Europe, even if I'm not listening to any programs.

The active circuitry in true noise-cancelling phones inverts the sound
arriving and so actually cancels it out.

The circuit takes a few seconds to adapt so when the attendant brings my
drink she has no trouble waking me.

I use the Bose QC-15 as about all I do is CW and the audio on these
is wonderful. The noise cancelling though is almost 100% perfect; my
old Alpha with its blower is 18 from my head and with the QC-15 on I

can't but just barely tell the amp is on or off.

I was thinking about getting a headset with a mic though Bose does
make the A20 for pilots, at $1100 for what is essentially the QC-15
with a boom mic, I'll pass. They do make a A100T snap on mic for the
QC15 but they are $250 for just the mic. I was referred by quite a
few people here to check out the Yamaha CM500 for a fine mic, quick
match to the K3 and comfortable headsets at $59.

I'm so happy with the Bose QC15 that I'm going to keep using these
and am going to need to figure out another way to get a mic into the
K3 in a way that will be convenient for contesting should I ever
decide to do a phone contest. I have an Electrovoice RE-10 which
would probably be nice needs no power maybe I can make a clamp-on

boom that I can remove from the desk once the contest is over. I also

have several condenser mics but they are for recording and would be
excess and just problematic for ham use.

Anyone have any suggestion of a removable boom mic other than the
A100T that will attach to the QC-15 and make it simple to use and
then remove when the contest is over? I don't want to use velcro.

Thanks 73,

Gary
