The upgrade to your existing processor costs $289. Before spending $399 on the whole processor, though, plus RAM and HD and optical drive (1GB RAM + 40-80GB HD + Combo or Superdrive = $300-400), I'd consider a used Titanium, which you can find for considerably less than the upgraded Pismo would cost you. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Superdrive for Pismo
OWC has a pretty good deal on right now for the slot-loading 8x Superdrive with DL support, at $139.99, including 10 pcs. media, Dantz Retrospect and Dragonburn (good burning software, IIRC the only one that lets you burn incremental sessions on DVDs, unlike Toast). They're for G4 powerbooks but the work perfectly in the Pismo. Note: make sure they come with the black BEZEL. This sometimes isn't included, as people upgrading their G4 powerbooks just reuse the one from their original drives. You can often find these drives cheaper on ebay, but OWC is a good store and offers a good 1 year warranty. I believe this model is the Panasonic (Matsushita) UJ-845. As noted previously, the Pismo can burn DVDs reliably at 2x, maybe 4x but that's pushing it. So you won't get the most out of this 8x burner. You could look for a used one on ebay that has lower speeds (e.g., UJ-815, UJ-825, or tray loading UJ-810, UJ-811) to save money. That said, if you do buy a used G4 powerbook in future to upgrade from the Pismo, you can use this Superdrive to upgrade the G4 and stick the drive from the G4 in the Pismo and resell it. It definitely will not do a DVD-R or R/W, most likely on account of imperfect grounding or other flaws in the electrical interface from the drive to the motherboard. Actually the Pismo will burn DVDs okay, just at slower speeds. Depends on your setup, portability needs, etc. External firewire will always be much better, faster, stabler, etc. As I mentioned, I used a Panasonic UJ-811B in my Pismo and it burned movies to DVD-R's okay. Was able to read those movies on the same drive and on a home DVD player. I used DVD Backup and DVD2oneX to prepare the source video file. The Panasonic drives have the advantage of being tray-loaders that can use the original Panasonic DVD-Rom drive bezel from the Pismo (not the LG one). The series includes UJ-810, UJ-811 and UJ-820, if I remember correctly. The burning speeds increase as the model number goes up, with the 820 at 4x. Re: Does AL powerbook read DVD+R disks?
Quick question. I have a G4/1.33 12 with Superdrive. Would it read DVD+R disks with movies burnt using DVD Recorder connected to TV? Apple spec'd its drives before + media became popular, or perhaps even available. After I replaced my OEM DVD-CD-ROM drive with a generic DVD-CD-ROM- R-R/W drive which included two-layer capability, I was surprised that none of the Apple products would support + media, so for a while I was stuck burning two disks: a + one for recorder/player playing, and a - one for laptop playing. Okay, thanks for all the info, but maybe I wasn't clear with my question, as a few people responded about internal superdrives in powerbooks. But I was asking about a DVD Recorder you hook up to your TV and, in my case, also to our satellite TV decoder box. I've found a great deal on a DVD recorder that burns to DVD+R and DVD+RW disks only (not to DVD-R). I know Macs tended to prefer DVD-R disks in the past, and I know my 12 G4/1.33 Al Book with Superdrive reads movies copied on DVD-R disks just fine. I wanted to know if movies I recorded from the TV to DVD+R disks could be read okay on the Al Book. Oddly, I can't find the specs anywhere, so I was hoping to find someone who has actually done this and can provide the info from personal experience. Thanks. I've done this on a Pismo with a UJ-810 and a UJ-811, and it looks great. While this is completely true, Panasonic has reportedly discontinued all of the drives mentioned, in favor of the UJ-845-B. It is the UJ/UJDA-8xx (where xx is 10, 20, 30, etcetera, but *not* 45) which is completely compatible with the bezel of the Mac PBs, as described above. Don't know about what's been discontinued or not, but the drives are easy to find on ebay. The important thing, as I mentioned, is to get a TRAY-loading model. The UJ-845 is a slot-loader, which does work fine in the Pismo, but obviously you can't use the original bezel At least, not without cutting a slot in it! Though it should be noted further that some online stores (MCE, Wegener Media, etc.) do sell slot-loading drives for the Pismo with a Pismo bezel on them. Probably custom-made, custom-cut solutions. Pismo repairs
Am finally cleaning out our last few Pismos, now fixing them up for sale. Have found two that are giving me problems: 1) Pismo 500 had a ruined hard disk cable: the part that connects the HD to the logic board had a hole burned in it! I replaced the cable and popped a new HD in there, then tried to reboot. Got the usual startup bong, but then a blank grey screen. Have reset PRAM and power manager, but still grey screen. Was unable to boot from CD. Have tried different processor, RAM and keyboard. Same grey screen. Any ideas? 2) Pismo 400 that was working fine except for CD-DVD, which reads DVDs but not CDs. I have swapped a lot of Combos and Superdrives into the Pismo bay units over the years with 100% success rate. I've tried different Combos and a Superdrive with this unit, but there are a couple problems: the unit is not reported correctly in Apple System Profile, i.e. the model number has weird symbols in it (%, etc.); same with Patchburn; mounted disks are not recognized; the Combo and Superdrive are recognized in Toast 6, but I can't burn (error message). The weird thing seems to be the drive versions being partially recognized. What could cause this? Defective slot on logic board that bay unit connects to? video problem iBook G3
I just bought a G3/800 iBook with 32MB VRAM and have a weird problem. It had Panther installed (not in English) and I wiped the HD, made 2 partitions and installed 9.2.2 on one and Panther + 9.2.2 on the other. 9 installed fine in both cases and everything worked okay, but after I zapped the PRAM and rebuilt the deskop, the desktop on screen turned, and has remained, small, covering about 2/3 of the screen and sitting right in the middle. Checked the monitor control panel and it gave me 2 displays, including an external one: though none was attached. I attached an external display, which showed up mirrored, but the desktop on the iBook remained 2/3. I then installed Panther and the desktop was normal. Everything also worked fine with external monitor attached. I then booted back into 9, with the external monitor attached, and the iBook's desktop filled the whole iBook screen, plus the external one was okay. I then detached the external monitor and rebooted the iBook in 9, and the small desktop problem returned. Any suggestions? Thanks, Chris -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Pismo questions
OK, next question, are there any replacement/upgrade drives so I can get CDRW and maybe DVDRW? Rad.. As per recent discussions about the Sony 830, there are LOTS of options for a Combo CDRW/DVD and several for a DVD-RW. Check out xlr8yourmac.com under their Drive Upgrades database. Personally I've used several different brands of Combo in my Pismos and can recommend them all: Sony, Matshita, LG, Teac. I've also used a few different DVD-RWs too: Toshiba SD-R6472 which is currently the fastest DVD-R out there (8x for both DVD-R and DVD+R, 4 x RW, 2.4x Dual Layer), as well as the slot-loading Superdrives Apple uses in the G4 powerbooks: Panasonic Matshita UJ-815 and UJ-825, the latter being faster at 4x vs. 2x. I like the slot-loading option, as you could keep the drive if you upgrade to a G4 with Combo in the future: just swap the drives and resell the Pismo with the slot-loading Combo from the G4. IIRC, the UJ-825 is on sale somewhere for about $130, which is a great deal. Highly recommended. Good luck. Chris -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Would there be a difference in the drive between Mac and PC vendors? Is there anything I should be wary of here? Thanks for any advice, Kate Absolutely no difference if it's the bare drive only. Check to see if the Mac dealers happen to sell it already installed in the expansion bay unit (doubtful). I've used this same drive in a Pismo and it works great. I hacked the Authoring Support plugin for OS 9, which you can download from the xlr8yourmac web site. With it, the drive is recognized in 9 by Disk Burn and iTunes. In X you can use Patchburn 3 (free dowload) to do the same thing. The drive is not set to Master, so unless your expansion bay unit can be, or has been, modified (see xlr8yourmac re. soldering a pair of tiny pins on the expansion bay unit's controller board), the drive will have the following problems: you won't be able to boot from a CD by holding down the C key (though you can boot from a CD by holding down the Option key); the drive will not be recognized after you wake the powerbook from sleep; it will not be recognized if hot-swapped (in both cases, you have to restart the Pismo to have the drive recognized by the system). The drive works great with Toast, Disk Burn, iTunes, Dragon Burn, etc. Plays DVDs just fine. The faceplate is black and rectangular, but looks okay in the expansion bay. NOTE: the person who bought my Sony unit told me that he successfully swapped the faceplate to it from his original Pismo DVD drive (the LG model). I have gotten it running twice, I don't know how, but it will just boot sometimes and run for an indefinite amount of time then just freeze and die. Also, the screen has this red tinge to it these two times I've booted it. Scott 3 beeps means bad RAM, so it either failed or is the wrong type. Try different RAM and make sure it's Pismo compatible. The red or pink tinge is normal, in the sense that it's a known problem with the Pismo. It usually goes away immediately or a few minutes after the Pismo has booted. May get worse over time, in the sense that it'll stay pink for longer periods of time after booting. Chris -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... You can find new Combo CD-RW/DVD (DVD read only) drives for under $80 if you want to spend less. You might also need to modify the controller board in the expansion bay unit to have the drive recognized as Master (ID = 0), which prevents sleep/hot swap/boot problems (drive not recognized). Re: Mac CD-RW Burners (For Powerbook G4?)
on 17/05/2004 23:55, G-Books at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: So what CD/DVD-RW is possible and preferred to replace the one in the early Powerbook G4's (400/500 and so on)? There aren't very many slot-loading slim drives out there. MacResQ has them for about $149. That gets you a Matshita CW-8121, which is a 8x4x32x8 combo drive. Logic supply sells the CW-8122, which is a 16x10x40x8 combo. However, if you have the 1st-gen like I do, then the MacResQ drive comes with a bracket and the proper cable. The bracket for the stock DVD player isn't removeable, but it would be possible to fab your own if you can work with .030 aluminum sheet. I think the connector on the drive is in a different place, so you can't use the cable from the DVD player either. I got the MacResQ model, then later got one from Logic and replaced it. The first one is now a cool slot-loader in a Pismo. One problem with the faster drive, it only has a 2MB buffer so music CD's have a few skips if I burn at the top speed. The good thing about both of these drives is the native support in OSX. --- JSH TiBook Actually there are lots of slot loading slim drives (Combos and DVD-R/Ws), but as JSH points out, the problem is the bracket for powerbooks that shipped without a Combo. The aftermarket drives are smaller than the original DVD and require said bracket. The companies that sell the kit charge an arm and a couple legs, but the installation is greatly simplified. There are sites that describe how to make your own bracket and save some cash. Should be noted that bare 4x DVD burners (the Matshita UJ-825) cost a lot less than companies' 1x or 2x burners with the kit (e.g. $260-is vs. $330-350). If you're handy with aluminum sheet, go for it. As JSH points out, the slot-loaders can also be fitted in Pismos. I've got a Matshita UJ-815B in mine. For lots of feedback on the different 3rd party Combo drives that people have used successfully with the Pismo, check the web site xlr8yourmac.com under Drive Compatibility Database. Personally, I have successfully used 2 different Combos in my Pismo with both 9 and Jaguar: a 24x10x24x8x Samsung SN-324B and a 24x24x24x8x Sony CRX830E. Both work perfectly with Toast 5.2 and, after modifying the iTunes plugin, are compatible with it too. They are bootable: the Samsung only when holding down the ALT/Option key at startup, and the Sony when holding down the ALT/Option key or selecting the disk from the Startup Disk control panel. They are not bootable holding down the C key, because they are set to Slave (they show up as device 1 in Apple System Profiler) and not Master. Check the xlr8yourmac web site for these things if you want, because some Combo drives offer different things: - the original Pismo DVD faceplate (or bezel) fits onto the new Combo: people have had some success here with Matshita/Panasonic combo drives, if their original Pismo DVD was a Matshita - the Combo is or can be set to Master: some drives ship this way from the factory (people have mentioned Acer drives, which use, IIRC, Matshita/Panasonic); others have reported switches on the drive that let you switch it to Master - iTunes/Disk Burner compatibility: many Combo drives are compatible right out of the box; almost all drives can be made compatible: in 9 by using a modified Authoring Support exension, in Jaguar by using a freeware app called Patchburn Prices have dropped a lot and you can now find fast Combos (burn CDs at 24x) for less than $100 either on ebay or from an online store. Lombard-Pismo frankenmac?
Hi, I happen to have a Pismo logic board (was tested good) and have the opportunity to pick up a Lombard diagnosed with dead logic bd. (almost a freebie). Any chance the two would work together? ie. after creative cutting to have the firewire ports accessible thru the scsi port area? And any other necesessary hacksawing, etc.? Or is it just completely impossible? e.g., I seem to remember incompatibilities with the screens... ie. the screen connectors on the logic boards are in different places and the cables won't reach; if so, any workaround? Just in case it was a problem of the battery simply wearing out, I got a brand new one from Digitally Unique (incidentally, they had a great price: about $133 if memory serves). I've just charged it, and, guess what: with longest battery life settings, I get an estimated 4:05 hrs. ! Moral: beware of your assumptions: there may be an external factor (in this case the battery simply wearing out) that happens to coincide with another variable, leading you to make an unwarranted conclusion. But there are a lot of people complaining on the Apple Discussions Forum about greatly reduced battery capacity immediately (repeat: immediately) after upgrading from 9.x to Jaguar. e.g., similar story to yours, with battery time dropping overnight from 2.5 hrs to 30 minutes. Sure, the batteries could have just worn out, right at that moment, but the coincidence is interesting to say the least. I still haven't read of anyone with a definitive answer on this though. And if anyone is still under extended Applecare, remember that batteries are covered by the warranty, though Apple has not been completely consistent across the board in replacing batteries. Some people do get replacements, others don't. I got my Lombard battery replaced after 2 years and 9 months, when battery time had fallen to about 30 minutes, and Apple Support was extremely friendly, helpful and prompt to send the replacement; they even replaced the replacement, which only got about 50 minutes of battery time on a full charge. I know some companies do the job for a lot less than Apple, but said prices are still in the $500 range, plus shipping (I'm in Europe). I came across a G4/550 with combo drive at a good price, though it has a busted right hinge (the guy uses it with an external monitor and it works fine). I also see right (and left) hinges selling on ebay in the $100 range. If I could do the repair job myself it'd be a great deal; there'd be no advantage in getting a company to do the repair job at $400-500. I do have some experience in piecing broken powerbooks into good working Macs, including 1400s, 3400s and Pismos. I've also done screen replacements on these. The exp. bay DVD burner would be great for data DVD backups; plus, it offers very high CD burning speeds (at least compared to, say, MCE's combo for Pismos, which burns at 8x). The Pioneer I mentioned previously burns DVD-R an DVD-RW at 2x, and burns CDs at 16x (CDRW at 8x, IIRC). A nice all around drive for $290-ish. Anyone who needs to burn authored DVD content (as with iDVD) needs a G4, so you might want to think twice about the economics before spending close to $600 for the two upgrades to your Pismo. i.e., your used Pismo might fetch $900-ish, so 900 + 600 = 1500, which will get you a good way towards a G4 with a Superdrive. It charges (what's left) of the battery, doesn't run warm and basically provides exactly the same behavior as the Yo-Yo did. An Apple tech told me the adapter would work just fine, at it appears to be doing so. At home, I use a Powerbook 3400 adapter with my Pismo 500 and I like it a lot. It has a large brick that you plug a standard IT plug into, which lets me use it with my APS surge protector (the type that provides 5 female-type plugs, with a switch for each connected computer or peripheral). The brick has a 3-prong male socket and takes the same female type plug you use with older computer peripherals (external CD burner, scanner, etc.) and with desktop Macs. Never had any problems, and they're pretty cheap to buy. After having read several reports on problems with the yo-yo, I used it occasionally on the road, but I never wound the cord up like a yo-yo. DVD write-ability would be great but I'll settle for DVD play/CD read and write. I would also like it to be internal, rather than external. Are there replacements that fit into the module? Preferably plug and play - I would rather not have to take the faceplate off the old DVD drive and try to mount it on a new one. Haven't replaced mine (yet, other than when my original LG died, but that was in warranty), but I hear good comments on the MCE drives - see them from here: http://store.powerbook1.com/powdriv.html BTW, I am not connected in any way with them (other than being a probably future customer whenever my Pismo's DVD/CD drive dies). I replaced my Pismo DVD with a Samsung SN-324B Slim Combo drive that writes CDs at 24x, rewrites at 10x, reads CDs at 24x and reads DVDs at 8x. It is bootable in 9 and 10 using the ALT key. Works perfectly with Toast. I hacked the iTunes plugin for 9 and it works great. Disk Burner support without hacked plugin, BUT I had problems mounting disks I burnt in Toast (message: This disk is unreadable...), which I solved by disabling the Apple CD/DVD extension and using Toast CD Reader 5. Now no problems mounting burnt CDs, but no Disk Burner support. Plays DVDs fine in 9 and 10. A great purchase on ebay at around $120. Check out xlr8yourmac for lots of other reports, including DVD-R/RW drives that work in Pismos. Look under Drive Compatibility Database, then Pismo and Expansion Bay. Prices tend to vary, but you should be able to find a Combo drive that works perfectly in the Pismo for around $100-120. Samsung, Matshita, Teac, etc., lots of different makes and models work great. Looking for fried Pismo
Hi, If anyone has a Pismo with a fried motherboard I'd be interested in buying it. Even without battery, RAM, HD, DVD, which you might want to sell separately. Either a 400 or 500, naturally with good working processor and screen (and PRAM battery, if possible). Naturally I'll pay all shipping. Payment thru paypal if you want. Pretty urgent, so if you can help, it'd be greatly appreciated. Please let me know offlist. Thanks, Chris -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I think the total damage was around $100 for a new mechanism, and it only took about 3 minutes to install. Probably the easiest (and least expensive!) fix I've done for my Pismo to date. Hope it helps. Tom It does happen to the Matshita drives, too, though probably not as frequently. It is a problem that is starting to surface a lot in Pismos, perhaps not surprising after 3+ years of work as people's main everyday computer. The faulty Pismo DVD is a big thread at the Apple Discussions forum. Check it out at the Apple site. For alternatives to just a simple DVD replacement, check out xlr8yourmac.com under the Drive database and under Pismo. Lots of people have swapped in combo CDRW/DVD's in place of the faulty DVD; DVD-R/RW units are starting to appear too. Lots of user feedback on models, installation tips, compatibility, bootability, modified plugins for iTunes and Disk Burner, etc. It is surprising just how many different makes and models work in the Pismo; and the swap is easy and takes about 10 minutes max. If you are going to spend $100 on a replacement, I'd suggest checking out the xlr8yourmac database and then heading to ebay. Prices have risen lately, but you should still be able to get a 24x10x24x8x combo CDRW/DVD for between $100 and $130. I've seen 8x4x24x8x Matshita units go for under $50, which is a great deal. Re: Got my Lombard 400

The DVD drive is a Matshita DVD-ROM SR-8171 rev 080E , is this the troublesome one? I have noticed that sometimes it won't recognize a CD or DVD. It also seems to start up periodically and move the heads. Is it supposed to be doing this? It's got 128 MB RAM, I'm thinking it would be worth upping that for OS 9.2, how much makes sense? Any preferred vendors? I need to get a expansion bay floppy, is the VST superdisk the best option? I'm also moving up the the keyprints on the screen problem, I can't see them when the screen is on, should I worry about them? Are they going to get worse? Lastly this machine came without the rubber feet and the IR port window. Any tips on sources? I've located a bottom case on E-bay that I could get the parts off, we'll see how cheap it goes. First off, as a new Mac owner, remember NEVER to say anything negative about your Apple equipment. If something isn't working right, it is either your fault for using it incorrectly, if not abusing it, or it's the fault of the third party manufacturer who is sabotaging Apple's reputation. Now, to your specific questions: - I'd recommend, sooner or later, getting a replacement Combo drive for your flaky DVD; check xlr8yourmac.com under the Drive Compatibility database for feedback on specific models that work well with the Lombard; personally, I can recommend the Samsung SN-324B, which is a great little 24x10x24x8x combo unit that is Apple compatible and slides nicely into the expansion bay to replace the DVD - re. RAM, check how it's configured; probably 64 + 64MB, so you'd lose one of the banks in upgrading; I can recommend Other World Computing, macsales.com, for a compatible 256MB module with lifetime warranty; priced around $65, IIRC. - 9.2 is great for the Lombard - the VST Superdisk is a nice option, apparently it also works in OS X; I've seen them on ebay for $50, though you might find a refurb one at smartdisk.com for a lot less; they were on sale 50% off a while back, though they may be out of stock. - rubber feet and IR port are just cosmetic problems, I wouldn't go after a full bottom case just to fix those (though naturally it depends on the bidding); you can always get rubber feet, in different heights, from hardware stores and they work great. Re: CD Burner
OS X 10.2 killed support for my drive ( I have had that verified from another owner of the same drive): Sony 24/10/40 internal. I also lost support for my USB burner along the way (don't remember which version of OS X 10.x.x killed that! Fortunately I never used the internal burning software except to gauge OS X's support for third party burners :) Since it doesn't do multi-session back-ups or gives you any control over the CDs you create it was next to useless for real back-up (other than if you wanted to dump a whole lot of stuff to disk at once and that was pretty rare). Ah, so that's it. 10.2 killed support for YOUR drive, so not exactly a case of Apple has been scaling back support for non-Apple CD-RWs in every release of OS X as you said in your previous post. The best way to check for supported CDRWs - and to find modified OS 10.x Disk Burner and iTunes plug-ins for a particular drive to make it work in 10.x - go to www.xlr8yourmac.com and look under Drive Compatibility Database. There you'll find hundreds of user reports on specific drives with specific Macs, as well as links to the modified plug-ins that make most drives work with X Disk Burner and iTunes. The original questioner, a Pismo owner, might also want to check out portable firewire CDRWs: e.g., the Lacie Pocket CDRW, which comes in different speeds (up to 24x burning, IIRC) and has had pretty good reviews. More expensive than non-portable drives though. Chris -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I only ask that whoever it is agrees to pay/reimburse the shipping charges. Walt That's a super offer and great to know. I will definitely keep it in mind. There have been a number of times that I would have gone ahead with a purchase on ebay or from Smartdisk, for example, if only shipping outside the US had been available and/or cheaper. e.g. the recent super prices on Smartdisk peripherals and expansion bay drives for powerbooks: shipping in the US was free vs. $50 to Canada and even more to Europe! Then there's the guy on ebay with all the expansion bay CDRW's and LCD screens, who doesn't ship outside the US. As to forward shipping, I've had great luck with the US post office sending stuff to Canada and Europe. Very cheap air mail rates, delivered in 3-4 days, insured up to $500. Though if you insure it you'll almost certainly have to pay customs. Anyway, thanks for the generous offer. There are some super people on this list. Re: Buying Macs outside Canada
There is no sure way to avoid duty and taxes. Even if the item is used, you will still be liable for duty and taxes. Occasionally (as in Blue Moon and/or Hell Freezing Over time) the overworked boys and girls down at the customs office might be on their donut/doughnut break and overlook a chance to gouge you, but that is rare. If you receive it by mail, especially if you insure it, you will almost certainly pay tax on it. The US expatriates who go home to visit now and then are the only ones with a good way of beating the system. For everyone else, this it'd be a good time to reach across the border and make an American friend, a GST Pal if you will. Enduring friendships have been built on less solid ground than the hope of saving money. And how 'bout that nafta... Re: Pismo/Lombard etc. SmartdiskVST sale
Though items in general, and the expansion bay hard drives in particular, went quickly (i.e., within about two hours from when I received the Smartdisk email announcing the sale), you can bet they'll be appearing on e-bay pretty soon. It's likely that some people pounced on the sale and bought as many units as they could, with an eye to reselling them. I was disappointed about not getting one of the 30GB or 18GB expansion bay drives, though I did find out in the end that buying one off e-bay might be cheaper than if I'd got it directly from Smartdisk. Just to get an idea on shipping, I put an order thru for an expansion bay HD and a USB floppy, and at checkout I got international shipping rates of $100 to Europe and $60 to Canada (!!) What a joke. Even more so considering that they were offering free ground shipping in the US (e.g., Vancouver, BC is just across the border from Vancouver, WA, but they want $60 to go that extra mile or two). I'm sorry now I wasted an hour or so rummaging thru the Smartdisk web site and returning from time to time, hoping to find that the stock had been replenished. If prices don't get too out of hand on e-bay, I'll be able to get an exp bay HD shipped to Canada for about $35 less than Smartdisk wanted. on 25/5/02 13:07, (G-Books) at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Subject: Re: small dog on the ball Well then, That deserves an apology on my part to the people at SmallDog. I apologize for any hurt feelings that I may have caused. It's amazing the people you meet on this forum. It's also reassuring. With respect. John McKee Sorry, but I can't pass up the chance to post re. Smalldog, especially given that a Smalldog employee reads and responds to the list. I've had a mixed bag of good and bad service from Smalldog over the last couple years. For the most part they're pretty solid people to deal with. My last couple of dealings with them, though, have left a bad taste in my mouth. First, the problem with overselling items online. Other people on this and other Mac lists have mentioned this, too. It's obviously pretty annoying. And it was confirmed to me by a Smalldog customer service person that it was, in effect, their company policy to oversell their online items. I had it happen to me 3 times in the recent past, though on 1 occasion their customer service came thru very nicely and sold me a similar product at the same price (which they said was at cost). The other two times didn't work out so well. My online order, after being accepted at checkout and then confirmed by email, was subsequently cancelled a couple days later because the items were sold out. Pretty annoying in general, and in one case it really caused some problems at my end, in that when my order for a G4 processor upgrade had been accepted and confirmed, I subsequently went thru with a pending deal to sell my G3 processor to a customer (who I'd swayed away from PC's); so when my order was cancelled by Smalldog a couple days later, I was in a pretty awkward position with the customer and ended up selling him my G3 processor anyway - which obviously left me without a processor, so I had to fill my order thru OWC. More seriously, I bought 5 clamshell iBook batteries from Smalldog, all of which were DOA. All of them. Pretty shocking stuff. I contacted Smalldog, and they informed me that they knew about the problem, that they had received a bad batch from Apple, but that Apple wouldn't recognize the problem, so there was nothing Smalldog could do about it until Apple decided to take the batteries back. It seemed, and still does seem, a bit like passing the buck. I doubt Smalldog knew the batteries were bad, but some sort of quality control might be in order. Especially when my order was an international one, meaning that I would have had to pay (a lot) to send the defective merchandise back to Smalldog. The price was good, at $29, which is why I bought five; I see that Smalldog is now selling these batteries for $79. I assume these are from a good batch. Unfortunately I got stuck with the 5 from the bad batch. (No jokes re. funky paper weights, please). Chris Houston -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Broadband - not wireless
Bad form responding to my own post, perhaps, but I've found out a few more things on our DSL setup. As I mentioned, it's a combo DSL/telephone service, with 24/7 1.28Mbit DSL, plus all local and national telephone calls, for a fixed monthly rate of $29 (half price for the first six months, then it goes up to the full rate of $58). We were also able to cancel our contract with the phone monopoly, too. The DSL hardware is an Alcatel Speed Touch Home ethernet modem and a Telsey Telecommunications CPV Home Gateway device. The CPV has 4 10bT ethernet ports (1 In, 3 Out) and 2 phone jacks. One of the Out ethernet ports will be used for a fiber optic line in the future, though now I can hook up a third computer to it. The CPV also acts as an ethernet hub. I wasn't sure about this, so in the end I just hooked up a second Mac to it (currently there's a Sawtooth and a Lombard, both with OS 9.1) and both Macs were sharing files in an instant. Wow. Now I'll be running those friendly little CAT wires through the house this weekend (while trying to keep our 15-month old from immediately ripping out dad's best laid plans). No additional software needed to use the DSL modem or the CPV with our Macs. A truly transparent setup and system. It is literally a hot pluggable DSL connection. And each Mac has its own separate DSL connection; there's no need to use one as a router. The point here being that while the service provider did mention Mac-compatibility, their service people did not know much at all about Macs. Indeed, being a new company, they seemed to be more sales types than tech types. Time to spread the word with them. Next query: security. Given that it's all so simple and transparent - a rather large WAN of subscribers, in short - what would you suggest in terms of security? As I said, we're using OS 9.1, with no plans to go to X too soon. Chris H -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: VST expansion bay HD

I got a call from Shoplet on Thursday saying that they would be shipping my drive. I got them to overnight it to me at their expense (an upgrade from the Fed Ex 2 day service I already had). Got my drive Friday and it works great under 9 and X. I think we've seen the last of these drives at the sub-$60 price. Any vendors that still have them--like OfficeDepot.com--are selling them at the old retail prices (~200 bucks). As many of you have probably noticed, several of these drives have shown up on ebay in the last couple of weeks, all them being sold in the $125 area. Bet they are some of the one's from the Smartdisk Yahoo store. Jim R. They were great prices, but unfortunately it seems as though the likes of Shoplet and Sparco (who also had the drives) not only sold Smartdisk's products, they also took customer service lessons from them too (i.e., I've not had super service from Smartdisk in the past). I had my order for a 10GB exp bay HD and a 250MB Zip exp bay done and confirmed by Shoplet on the 22nd, though I got an email from Shoplet a couple days later saying the exp bay HD was permanently out of stock; same deal with Sparco, whose real-time availability updating system showed 6 exp bay HD's still available when I placed my order. They too emailed me a couple days later saying the item was out of stock. The only thing I can think of is that mine was an international order, which usually takes longer to process, though you'd think/hope the store would hold the items on your order till they got the cc approved. I guess you can't have everything though: i.e. both low prices and half decent customer service. The irony is that when I found the exp bay HD's available at Shoplet, I did make sure I got my order thru before informing the list, precisely because there were only a few left. Oh well. Not the end of the world. Now keeping the eyes open for breaking deals on the web... if anyone gets a whiff, let us know ;-) Chris H -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Powerbook memory swap from G3 Bronze to Wallstreet 233?
on 3/18/02 10:50 PM, (G-Books) at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The short answer is Yes it may work. The right answer is no, don't do it. The Bronze uses PC100 (or PC133) RAM. THE Wallstreet recognizes it (usually), but requires PC66 RAM. It may show up and boot; but most likely it will show up as 128mb (PC100 133 is stacked RAM, PC66 isn't). If it DOES run, it will very likely be unstable. This could become a great argument, as I've heard many folks say their PC100 RAM worked in their wallstreet, but I've also had dozens of themm in my shop which wouldn't, and a number that would crash regularly when PC100 RAM was installed. So IF you want it to be reliable, get some PC66 RAM for it. That's what was made for it. Thanks, David Wegener It would also depend on which Bronze they're talking about: the Pismo or the Lombard. Most memory advertised for the Lombard is also advertised as compatible with the Wallstreet and pre-DVD iMac. So, if it worked okay in the Lombard it should work okay in the Wallstreet.
