Since you suggest that you will always have access to Tiger, there
really isn't much of a reason to wait for it to be pre-installed on the
PB's is there ? If the 1.5 GHz is going to suit your needs, I'd say go
and buy one so you can start enjoying
it now !
That's sort my feelings too as the line has been what seems seriously
revised, and I'm getting an external +/- dual layer FW/USB 2 box,
so I'll always be going for the combo version.

I bought one second hand, the one with the dent that we were

It was warped where it would weigh on a flat surface.
I just put it on two high point where it was lowest and pressed

I use my 15 1600x1200 laptop on a daily basis, with no magnification.
It is perfectly usable to be and the 5 other people at the office with
the same laptop. At the same time we constantly get asked how we can
see our screens... but the people asking are also the ones who run their
19 LCDs at 800x600 and complain about wanting a bigger screen.

The extra screen space is just so useful.

Hi Andrew,
I agree the 17 would be more difficult to use on a plane and certainly
not as portable.
I have never had problems using the 15 on a plane. The pull out
trays are just the right size for it and It was clearly designed for
portability as well. I find the small 12 screen causes too much eye
strain, especially on a plane where the ride is not always smooth in
the first place.

I think there is a strong argument for personal preference here. I
regularly walk around with my 15 PB locally and don't find it
problematic at all. It is fairly easy to conceal not that heavy,
although I wouldn't want to be walking for miles with it on my
shoulder.

This is the only computer I own. I thought I would need to get a
monitor almost immediately but when I received my PB, the screen just
seemed so big. A year later, I still don't have an external monitor
but I do plan to get one shortly as I am doing more intensive photo
restoration projects now and really need a 19-20 external monitor.

2005-02-16 Thread Andrew F.
All depends on the work you do and the quality of your eyes.

Its the same issue with my 12 PowerBook. I zoom my word docs to 140% and
usually magnify web pages, but I still wouldn't trade it for 800X600 which
would have a similar effect, but force me to use horizontal scrolling on
most websites.

High resolution screens don't give much benefit for working in Word or on
the web, but for graphics or movies they really are nice.

There were some (my first one was replaced for it), but it was rare on Rev B

Of course you can use the 17 on an airplane, but it wasn't designed for

it there for the wow-factor), while the 12 is the one that would most
benefit (though they left it off to make people want to spend more).

I don't think this is completely true - I very rarely see the 12 PB's
 or iBooks etc on planes.
The 15 is well suited to travel and really is not that much heavier.
I take mine all over the place and I don't even have a car !

The backlighting is definitely a great feature for those who don't
touch type and will be using their PB's in poor lighting conditions.
Although I do type proficiently, I got it anyway as I figured it could
be a good selling point when it comes time for me to upgrade to a newer
 PB.

High resolution screens don't give much benefit
for working in Word or on the web
Strongly disagree!
Well, if you like me want to see the bigger picture while working
and not just zoom in on a small portion, and then out and in...
I write manuals in Word on my 15 AlBook and it's just enough
where I can see WHAT I'm writing/inserting while also seeing
the actualy page layout.
I'd go mad on a 1024x768 screen.

I just thank God for progressive bi-focals. I use the 12 inch iBook and find
that the 1024 x 768 display is just fine for my needs. I can use Word, browse
the web and read email just fine with it sitting on my lap (doing so right now)
and I can see the screen just fine. I love all of my Macs...I do feel sorry
for my G5 20 inch iMac which sits in my office neglected while I mostly sit out

PowerBook wins every time. It was designed for travel, while the larger
ones are designed to be used at least on a table, if not a desk.

Of course you can use the 17 on an airplane, but it wasn't designed for
that. The 17 is the one least likely to need a lighted keyboard (they put
it there for the wow-factor), while the 12 is the one that would most
benefit (though they left it off to make people want to spend more).

This is one of the main issues, yes!
I have now had a 12 and use a 15 1GHz AlBook at work and the
desktop realestate is quite different.
The initial thought was a 12 for everywhere; sofa, outside on the patio
and then hook it up to a 17 TFT in my study, but if I went for the 15
I wouldn't have to switch between 1024 and 1280, sods law is that I'd like
to do something that required 1280 while not being in the study...
Like I said, the illuminated keyboard is a big one for me.
Gigabit Ethernet another, as FW800 and S-video out.
And I've just realised one of the real killers in the decision, the RAM!!
The 12 has 2x256 while the 15 has 1x512, making it much cheaper
to add more memory!!!
I just have one question regarding the timing of the purchase;
As the G5 is some way off, the 1.5GHz is plenty good for me, but
what about Tiger, would it not be better buying the AlBook with
Tiger installed ?!?
I will always have access to Tiger later (no need to harp on about
software licensing, we all have different levels of conciense...) ;o)
but maybe it'd be better to wait ?!...

Re: New PowerBooks

2005-02-15 Thread Andrew F.
Good for you!

For me it was very difficult choosing between the 12 (superdrive) and 15
(combodrive) this time around. The lighted keyboard would be nice, as would
the larger screen. Also, while I do travel and like the small size of the
12, I'm not a student anymore and thus do not have to carry and set up
multiple times per day, so the 15 wouldn't be too bad.

What it really came down to was comfort. I've owned the 12 (1GHz) for a
year and found that it really fit my lifestyle. It is small enough to take
almost everywhere, and as a result, it is always there when I need it. I've
had machines the size of the 15 before (T-series ThinkPad was my preferred
laptop in my Windows days) and while only around 5lbs and not too bulky, it
was just large enough that I often left it at home. The little PowerBook,
on the other hand, is actually small enough that I don't bother with a PDA
anymore.

The screen on the 12 is fine (as you probably know). It may be inadequate
if you do heavy content creation, but considering that until the Titanium
came out 1024X768 was the best you could do on a Mac laptop anyway, it
remains plenty for most of what a laptop is used for. I only want more
resolution when doing things like video editing, for which I just plug in my
external monitor.

There is no saying as to when Tiger will be released. Many think it will be
at the World Wide Developer Conference in June. From what I've seen, Tiger
is not ready for prime time yet.

But, if you're not in a hurry and can wait until the beginning of July, then
why not waiting? But then, at that time, rumors of a G5 PowerBook might be
more persistent, so maybe you will want to wait in September to see if they
are finally released. You see, you can always have a good reason to wait...

Me, I like a .2 release (i.e. Jaguar) for both hardware and software.

That's a really good point, Tim. For example, I'm sure that, with some
insight now, owners of Titanium PowerBooks are probably happy but maybe not
as happy as they would want, as a few flaws started coming out quite a bit
after they were initially introduced. I remember when the first generation
was released. They were beautiful, with their almost pure Titanium casing.
But then, stories about how the paint was peeling off started appearing and
I've never wanted to get one at that time...

For me it was very difficult choosing between the 12 (superdrive)
and 15 (combodrive) this time around.
My decision is combo either way as I want an external FW/USB2
dual layer +/- drive which I can use on any of the Macs in the house.

The lighted keyboard would be nice
More than nice for me, very practical. No light required.

Re: New PowerBooks

2005-02-15 Thread Larry le Mac
From: Laurent Daudelin [EMAIL PROTECTED]

There is no saying as to when Tiger will be released.

But, if you're not in a hurry and can wait until the beginning
of July, then why not waiting? But then, at that time, rumors
of a G5 PowerBook might be more persistent, so maybe you
will want to wait in September to see if they are finally released.
You see, you can always have a good reason to wait...
Yes, been there done that.
Bought my TiBook 550 three weeks before they fitted it with Combo
and bought my 15 AlBook a couple of weeks before they fitted it
with SuperDrive (I thin it was, or was there some other upgrade
on the standard machine ?)
In any case, the cash burning a hole in my pocket and my wife's
student discount does point towards an imminent purchase as
soon as I'm allowed out of the house. I am currently housebound
due to a 4 nail in my shoulder (intentially fitted to reconnect
my shoulder after a motorbike accident...)...

coffee shop, airport, living room sofa, etc.) and for when you're at
home/office, a nice 17 external TFT monitor (they have really come
down in price too!) gives you a superb 29 of screen real estate (if
you have monitor spanning, which even my wife's G3/900 iBook has,
thanks to the spanning hack) all for a lot less than the $3000
sticker price of a 30-inch cinema HD! (not a fair comparison, I know,
but the wife's setup is outstanding value at about $750 for the whole

Sweet.

Then again, I wouldn't recommend getting any .0 release of either hardware
(i.e. the first batch of G5 Powerbooks) or software (Tiger version 0)
unless you are comfortable sitting on the cutting edge.
I am inclined to agreen as the current lineup have been seriously
upgraded and have some really nice features that were pay-extra
before.

I would imagine that 14 1024 x 768 LCD displays are pretty cheap these
days. As soon as they would go up, then that would mean a more expensive
iBook 14. Plus, I'm not saying that they don't exist, but I've rarely seen
a 14 LCD display with a higher resolution than 1024 x 768. Cost must be
involved.

I guess that a 14 iBook makes sense for people that want a slightly larger
image or a more actual size of what's on the screen. At 1024 x 768 on the
12, everything appears smaller than it is actually...

There are reasons for the larger screen at the same resolution, the most
important
being that it is easier on the eyes. My 12 PoewrBook and 14 Lombard have the
same 1024X768 resolution (I think the Lombard uses the same screen as the 14
iBook), and while the available real estate is exactly the same, the 14 is a
lot nicer
when working at a desk or reading text. On the 12, I end up zooming the text
on
most websites and usually have my word documents set to 140% magnification
(plenty of real estate for that), and end up with nice, readable text. On the
14 I do
the same, mainly out of habit, and end up with giant-size text that is a
pleasure to
read, but looks freakishly large.

The 12 is definitely adequate, but the 14 is just a lot more relaxing. Of
course, the
price is bulk.

I would love to see a 13.3 low- and wide-screen iBook with a 1280x800
resolution. Played around with a Sony Vaio with that screen in a
computer store and it was very nice, apart from the XP on the notebook.
Cool black case too.

Old eyes? I found the 14 easier to read than the 12. Also, taking
advantage of the extra size, the battery is larger so battery life is
significantly improved.

Apple can - but keeping the iBook at 1024x768 is a way of differentiating
the iBook from the PowerBook line. Already the line is seriously blurred at
the 12 line.

To have a bigger screen!. I have a 14 iBook (the machine I'm using

I wouldn't want to stare at it for extended periods.

IIRC you can special order the SuperDrive in an iBook 12.

Because then they would be PowerBooks. Apple runs a fine line
between putting enough features in the iBook line and not encroaching
on the PowerBook line.

Which is why when I wanted a faster machine, my 12 PB became a 12

SuperDrive anyways, and I need something compact...

A 14 screen at a bit higher resolution in an iBook price range might
have made me consider it a bit longer than the half second I did,
probably still wouldn't have bought it, though.

I just have one question regarding the timing of the purchase;
Larry
Larry,
Since you suggest that you will always have access to Tiger, there
really isn't much of a reason to wait for it to be pre-installed on the
PB's is there ? If the 1.5 GHz is going to suit your needs, I'd say
go and buy one so you can start enjoying it now !

Sometimes they are fine, but your chances of trouble are reduced by going with
a
mature product.

Rev A on the 12 powerbook had serious heat issues and bottom cases that
warped,
making the machine wobble on a flat surface. SOme did it, some didn't, but the

Ok, do you realize you're contradicting yourself?
You say There were problems with Rev A that were fixed and therefore
Rev A concerns are a myth

HUH?
Ok, from the time that the first Ti500s came out until it was fixed,
there were Rev A problems. Once that was fixed, I would no longer
consider that Rev A (maybe Rev A.1 or Rev A.01 or something).

I'm not saying All of the entire batch of Rev A G5 Powerbooks will be
bad

What I am saying is, Given the history of Rev A products writ large
[which have ranged from CD ejection to paint coming off to weak battery
life / wifi signal], if you are looking to buy a Powerbook and will buy
one of the first batch off the presses [Rev A.0], you have a much
higher likelihood of running into problems than you do if you were to
buy a G4 Powerbook at this point when the line is fairly well
polished.

Does buying Rev A guarantee you problems and buying Rev Z guarantee you
won't have problems? Heck no. But I'll stand by my suggestion that
you'd be better off, statistically speaking, to avoid the potential
problems.

Saying Rev A problems are a myth is absurd. There's far too much
evidence to the contrary.

Re: New PowerBooks

2005-02-15 Thread Andrew F.
They seem to run cooler every revision. I tried the Rev A in the Apple
Store and after just ten minutes playng with iTunes and exploring Jaguar the
machine was scalding hot (I didn't buy it).

I did buy the Rev B 12 last year, and it did get rather warm, but nowhere
near as bad as the Rev A models.

I bought the Rev D two-weeks-ago, and despite a 50% faster processor, it
runs at about the same temperature as the Rev B, or maybe a little cooler
(on account of the processor not being pushed as hard?).

They have definitely improved the product during the production run, but
more than the added features, the Rev B model had a totally new system board
design that addressed the majority of the heat issues.

Well - sometimes you get a Rev A that gives you no trouble at all but
it seems most have some sort of problem initially. Even you admit that

Excellent news!! Partly for you, obviusly, but also for me
as I have just sold my 12 AlBook, yes the one which I
debated over for a week, the one with a dent in the corner
and twisted frame. I also sold my iMac G4 FP and an
interim PB G4 667DVI, so now I'm gonna go out and buy
myself a brand new AlBook, just undecided about the size...
12 or 15

New PowerBooks

2005-02-14 Thread Andrew
Well, I've had the new 1.5GHz 12 for a week now, and must say that the upgrade
was really worthwhile. The computer is noticeably faster (50% speed boost),
but that
is to be expected. What makes this a worthwhile upgrade are the little
changes.
Haivng a 5400RPM hard drive is a big improvement (I did the same upgrade to my
Rev B last year), and the new two-finger scrolling is fabulous.

What I like most, however, is the keyboard. WHen I first bought it I mentioned
that
the keyboard has a different feel and that I made more typos. As predicted, it
took
me about three or four days to get used to it, and my typos have decreased to
about
my usual number. What has really benefitted though is my speed. The action of
the
new keys really is better, with a nice spring in them that makes it easy to
move on to
the next one and know whether or not the key registered. It actually reminds
me of
the positive action of the old Apple Extended Keyboard 2 (the USS Nimitz), not
that it
feels the same, but that it is equally positive and like the aircraft carrier,
has a nice,
soft key sound as well.

So, there it is. Of course it still has all of the compromises that the 12
PowerBook
always had, though that's why Apple offers three sizes. I seriously considered
moving up to the 15 this time, but I already own a large laptop with an
excellent
keyboard for when I need one, and this machine is meant for travelling.

Andrew

: G4 to G4 Megahertz comparison (was Re: New Powerbooks announced / I bought my first Mac today)

2004-04-20 Thread Clyde Kahrl
Doubling a processor speed usually does not result in doubling the
computer speed because the rest of the computer does not keep up
proportionately. With a powerbook, it helps to have a faster drive
because of the slowness of the laptop drives in general.

From what I have read, the G4s are still going strong, and they
should ramp up over 2Gs later on. Motorola announced some
super-low-power versions of the G4 a couple of months ago. I was
wondering what was the power consumption of these new laptops--or if
we must wait longer for the new chips.

1. Apple is still trying to fit the G5 into a PowerBook and resolve
little things like heat dissipation.

2. IBM is having problems ramping up G5 production. Sampling rates are
still low. Otherwise, we would start seeing 3 GHz chips this summer as
Jobs had mentioned last year.

In the Pentium world, a 750mhz is not 50% faster than a 500mhz. Is that
true for G4 as well?
I think they used to use 5% increase per 100Mhz as a general rule. I'm

YAY

You may or may not go YAY to your HP 5150 printer. I have one
hitched to an eMac running Panther and your clothing could go out of
style in the time it takes to print. It also doesn't start
automatically and I get fairly frequent pen failure messages.
For some reason, it occasionally prints emails that are upside down
and backwards, so that I have to hold the paper up to the window and
read through the back of the sheet. I've never seen that trick on any
other printer.

Huh... strange... It has gotten largely positive reviews where I've seen
it.
Well I can always ship it back.

Wow!

I'm new to the G-Books list. I am absolutely honored to receive an
email from *the* Timothy J. Luoma, if even indirectly.

I have only a '98 Wallstreet, but I *do* still use a screamin' 400 MHz
OpenStep (Intel) machine, and an '040 Cube to boot.

Thanks again for all your contributions to the NeXT world.

Cordially,
Tom Zahm

HA! I thought this was a setup.

You're welcome. Believe it or not it was about a decade ago that I
started working for PEAK on the next-ftp site. I remember thinking that
the WWW was a waste of time (well, it still is, but in a different way ;-)

(For the non-NeXTers: PEAK was one of the two main FTP sites. Just about
every NeXTSTEP/OpenStep program was available on one or both of PEAK or
Peanuts, which was in Germany, IIRC. This was long before anyone had
their own web page to sell software. If you are familiar with Tucows or
Download.com it was something like that except a lot less sophisticated.
I essentially ran the PEAK site, answered questions, etc. This was back
when Usenet was actually worth using and before there was much spam... ah
the golden days. Believe it or not I still get a few emails/month about
NeXT stuff. You can still find a bunch of it at www.peak.org/~luomat/
[which you are only allowed to visit if you agree not to mock the web
design. It was the late 1990s.)

NeXTStep/OpenStep was absolutely awesome and I missed it terribly when I
finally had to quit using it (I sold my NeXTStation in 2001 and my NSFIP
machine went to the trash heap because I couldn't find anyone to buy it
:-/ I was truly hoping for OS-X for Intel but I'm looking forward to
getting back into the Unix world (tried FreeBSD but it had the same
problem as Windows; it was too hard to get it to do what I wanted it to
do. Even getting a window manager to work was a colossal pain.)

...

I just realized that I bought a new computer in 1997 (133mhz Pentium with
64mb ram [I think] which became the main machine instead of my 25mhz
NeXTStation w/ 32ram) then 2000 (650mhz Pentium with 128mb ram) and now
2004 (1ghz G4 with 512mb ram). I wonder what I'll be looking at in
2007/2008 :-?

Anyway, thanks for the ego boost. I think this is the first time I've
been referred to as *the* Timothy J. Luoma :-DDD As if my wife
didn't already have too much to put up with (-:
