But it has made me wonder if anyone knows where in the world, which gallery/museum or even private collection the paintings of lacemakers by artists such as Gabriel Metsu, Steven van Duyven, Pieter Jacobsz Codde, Thomas Woolner and Quirijn van Brekelenham might be? Nicolaes Maes has around 12 paintings of lacemakers credited to him I beleive, I know of 3 but not the others, and I understand J L Dyckmans painted one too, but I've not seen an image of this. I also threaded the ends through the beads both ways to hide the knot and to give it a bit more strength. So far, none of them have popped. Pavouci, We have recently acquired a flat in Prague (fairly central in Prague 1) and consequently I'll be spending increasing amounts of time in the Czech Republic. I would like to make contact with any lacemakers there (English speaking as my Czech is minimal!). Are there any groups that meet that would welcome an English lacemaker in their midst? Are there any workshops, lace days etc.? Any information would be welcome. I intend to take at least one pillow etc. over there with me but would also like to know if there are any places for buying lace equipment in Prague or environs as I would like to come to grips with Czech lace techniques. My next visit will be towards the end of November but whether I will be able to take my own equipment with me on this visit is uncertain (depends on how much other luggage I have to take). RE: [lace] Pattern help
Dear Tania, Looks to be a fairly standard torchon lace pattern - spiders, trails (v), fans and ground. I don't think it would have a special name like some of the Bucks Point patterns do. Different interpretations can be made on the same pricking - the trails and fans can be worked in either half stitch or cloth stitch and the ground could be worked as cloth stitch twist - pin - cloth stitch and twist. If working half stitch in the fan then it is best to work the outside edge pair in cloth stitch and twist for firmness. The V trails could be worked with the top half in half stitch and the bottom in cloth stitch. Hope this helps. [lace] cotton plaiters and pin makers
Greetings, I've been doing some family history research recently. My paternal 4 greats grandfather (one Simon Cowcher) was a tailor in London - from the early Census returns it would appear that 2 of his daughters were 'cotton plaiters' - wonder what that actually invloved - I can only find references to straw plaiters on Google. If any one out there has any info on cotton plaiting . My 5 great's grandfather was William Cowcher and I have found that there was a pinmaker's called Cowcher and Finch (1794) in the same area of London the Cowchers were living in in 1841 so maybe his father was a pin maker. All this info gave me quite a buzz - they say what goes around comes around - here am I plaiting threads and using pins. Up to this point I had only ever made Brugge Flower lace on this particular pillow using a larger sized pin. I never had a problem. But with this Flanders, I'm using a thinner thread and thus smaller pins and I'm having a heck of a time getting some of the pins to go into the ethafoam. One would think that smaller pins would go in more easily but that is not the case. These pins will hang in a certain spot and there's no pushing it in without taking the larger sized pin into the spot first, which will push in without a problem. Talk about sore fingertips! Not to mention bent pins. I'll be glad to finish this piece- not only to move onto the next project but to put this pillow away for awhile. I've talked to Santa about a nice Belgian straw pillow so hopefully the next piece of Flanders will be easier on the fingers. I hope he's listened! There is only one guarantee I've found with that recipe, that each time the results are different. And, I'm not really sure what a good cattern cake is supposed to be like! It is the converting of the measurements, and substituting the flour that is likely my problem. The 'cakes,' cookies or bar (however it turns out) are always edible, but never what I'd be happy serving to guests. So, have decided to make a regional recipe for Pinwheel cookies instead, which have a creamed shortening base, instead of melted butter. _ Download the new Windows Live Toolbar, including Desktop search! http://toolbar.live.com/?mkt=en-gb - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace] pricking on card
Hi All, Most copiers will work with thin card without problem. I use coloured card (160/200 gsm) and photocopy the pattern directly on to that. It can be covered with film if required but for a 'single use' pattern is fine as it is. Certainly I find it better than paper. A4 (and I imagine American letter size) sheets of coloured card can be bought at most stationery/art shops. The colour I use depends on the colour of the threads to be used in the project. RE: [lace] Blackborne Collection at Bowes Museum
Hi Margot - May be a bit heroic for a day trip - Barnard Castle is a long way from London (approx 3 hours each way by train with a 15 mile road link at the end). The museum web site certainly looks interesting and they are giving talks on the collection on the second Tuesday of each month so might be worth trying to coincide your visit with that. [lace-chat] thread colour conversion
Hi all, Can anyone help? - my Husband has bought me a printed tapestry canvas (view of Prague about 18 x 36). It says it is printed in Germany and the Coats logo is also printed on it. On the side is a list of wool colours required (presumably Coats) - does anyone know of a resource for converting from this to Anchor or DMC thread. I've spent quite a time searching on the web but can't seem to find anything that has the numbers I've got on it. I've got lots of skeins of tapestry wool (mainly Anchor and DMC) here but want to be sure I have enough of the correct ones to complete it. It's going to be a mammoth project (for those winter evenings perhaps). Any help appreciated. Re: [lace] Finished garter
Hi Jackie (and all the other spiders who might be interested) I've received some lovely comments about the garter - thank you. Some, like Jackie have asked how it was constructed - well here you are. Hope it makes sense. The lace was made in the usual way as a straight piece of lace using gold coloured silk gimp threads (a brighter gold for the bees and antique gold for the honeycomb rings). I purchased 2 different widths (1in and 1.5in wide) of what was described as 'honey' coloured ribbon - they are see-through in the middle (organza?) and have a solid gold coloured edging that matched the gimp colour I used for the bees. I joined the 2 ribbons together (with the bottom edges meeting) to make a casing and joined the whole thing into a circle. The lace was attached over the top of the casing - carefully hand stitched to the two lines of machine stitching that made the casing. This meant there was a single thickness of ribbon half and inch wide at the top which made made the small frill at the top. Threaded elastic through the middle and voila! I did try attaching the lace to the bottom edge of the casing but the effect was not nearly so pleasing - suppose it would depend on the lace and the ribbon used. I was really lucky to find the delicate ribbon. Think I'll go back and buy some more - just in case (3 sons and none married yet!!) I really like the finished effect I acheived. I've made other garters in the past either as a wide piece of lace with ribbon/elastic threaded through the middle or as 2 strips sewn either side of a casing but, knowing I could be pushed for time with this one, decided to try something different. Happy lacing Andrea Lamble Cambridge, UK p.s. the reason for the ecru and gold is that the bride will be wearing an antique gold coloured dress on the day. I had a look at the pattern in the book but I can't work out how you did it! What is the gold? Flat metallic gold thread or ribbon? And how did you put it in? As a gimp? And how did you do the elastic? I don't intend to copy your method (no more marriages in this family until the great-grand children come along) but I'm very curious because it is different to any garter I've seen or made. [lace] Finished garter
Hi all, Hoorah, I've just finished making a whole yard of two and a hlaf inch wide Bucks Point lace (Honey Bees pattern from Stott and Cook's 100 Traditional Bobbin Lace Patterns) for a garter for my step-sister's wedding in September - only started it 3 weeks ago and thought it would take me much longer to complete the length. I've managed to load pictures on to the Arachne webshots album if anyone is interested. I used Pipers spun silk, 140/3 which was a dream to work with (only broke one thread in the whole piece and that was in the picot edge bundle so was not a problem) and the lace has a nice soft drapy feel. Just hope the bride likes it and appreciates the hours of work. There is a set of the four seasons in Honiton Lace, by Pat Perryman on p46 of the Lace Guild pattern collection from some years ago. I've found pictures of a square set in New Designs in Bobbin Lace by Ann Collier, and the prickings for a set with different shaped outlines in 100 New Bobbin Lace Patterns by Yusai Fukuyama, but neither of them is the set I'm sure I've seen somewhere. Hi Jenny et al, Yep, definitely says 1/06 on the cover. Does anyone else get the optical illusion effect with the piece illustrated on p37 (a very pleasant torchon piece) - when you start to look at it it appears as you would expect - ecru lace taken on a white background - as you continue looking at it, slightly changing your focal length it looks like it has been 'quilted' on to some white fabric. [lace] definition of bobbin lace
Spiders All - How about this for a quaint definition of lace-making: Of particularly beauty is the bobbin lace. From a sketch on a cardboard placed on a bench with a cushion and on which pins are placed (which hold the knots which make the lace), the lace-makers manage skilfully the bobbins - little cylinders to hold the string. Found on a web site about Tavira, Portugal. My step sister is getting married near there in September and I was looking up accommodation possibilities when I came across it. RE: [lace] English laces and locations
Dear Lorri, Tolland is not far from Taunton, the county town of Somerset. Somerset is a county in the SW of England; the next county one way (to the W) is Devon (where Honiton lace comes from) and the other way, Wiltshire (where Downtown lace was made). Somerset itself does not have a particular style of lace making but I would guess the most likely situation was that the women made Honiton lace. I'm not sure that the Downtown lace industry had started in 1630 and was more focused in a small area in the SE of Wiltshire. http://www.portsdown.demon.co.uk/lace.htm I'm sure others will chip in with more information. [lace] cleaning lace
Don't know whether this will help anyone but: I have a distant recollection of attending a lace day when Santina Levy was giving a talk (probably in the late 80's/early 90's). The subject of cleaning (old) lace was covered and I remember that the use of natural saponins was recommended and that Horse chestnuts were a source (as are many other plant materials). Can't remember how the saponin was extracted but remember the recommendation of small peices of lace being cleaned by being immersed in a jam jar of the saponin solution and being gently agitated, then rinsed off etc. and blocked out to dry on e.g. blotting paper covered board. Larger pieces were attached to a backing fabric before cleaning and immersed in a bowl etc. This links to an article on Saponins.http://www.meltandpoursupplies.com/mpwebsite/school/Saponins.htm Funny how things stick in the mind to resurface later. [lace] lace relay - more thoughts
To all Arachneans interested in the lace relay: I think we need to stop and ask ourselves the purpose of a round-the-world lace relay - is it to show that lace is continuously being made round the world over the 24 hour period in question or do we want interactive chat going on between participants as it happens? As there will be maybe 100 or more taking part it doesn't quite come in the same category of the e-meeting Margot hosted the other day. Personally I feel that we could end up spending all the time reading and responding to emails and not much time actually making lace. Would it work if: An email address was set up with e.g. hotmail or yahoo (I just broke off from typing this and set up [EMAIL PROTECTED] just in case it's decide to go down that route). At the appointed start time and place the first people (wherever/whoever they are) send an email to the address to say they have started making lace - no fancy message - may be just a straight message saying who they are, where in the world they are, what time of day it is where they are, and the type of lace they are doing. As each new person starts they too just send a similar email to indicate they are joining in. Then when someone stops making lace they send a basic message saying they are leaving the list. (If they wanted to they could log in and out again later). If the email subject line said 'starting' or 'stopping' it would be easy to see what the status was at any given time. Then either while it is happening or when it's all over the resulting list of emails can be analysed to see what went on. Using this method no one ends up with loads of emails to read or cluttering their in-box - they can be concentrating on making lace and catch up with who was making lace where and when at their leisure. If everyone who participates gets the password for the email account (I'm sure we could all be trusted with this) then they could log into the account at any time and view how things were going. Or maybe there is another way of acheiving this. I'm not really up with live chat rooms etc. Happy lacing Andrea, in a cold and dull Cambridge, UK. Fed up with spam in your inbox? on Tamara's advice I am posting this on lace as well as lace-chat. Dear Spiders, DH and I are coming to the US for a 'road trip' around the Virginia area at the beginning of October for 18 days. We're starting from Washington DC and travelling via Shenandoah Valley/ Blue Ridge Mountains, across to Richmond and Williamsburg then up round Chesapeake Bay and back to Washington. Hoping to catch lots of Autumn colours in Shenandoah. Planning the final route this weekend. Is there anywhere that we simply 'must' include in our itinerary? This will be the fifth US road trip we have undertaken but the first visit to this area. We usually cover about 2000+ miles while we are away (and even with the massive hike in petrol prices in the US it will still be cheaper than the UK). Don't think I'll be travelling with any lace but will bring some embroidery or crochet with me to do for if I'm not too exhausted at the end of the day. From: Ann McClean [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [lace-chat] Getting sticky-label gunge off melamine Greetings fellow spiders, Advice, please, on how to remove the residue from sticky labels from a pair of melamine salt pepper shakers. Hi Babs, I know Biggins do patterns and kits for 'all lace' tablecloths (www.bigginslace.co.uk). Date: Tue, 19 Apr 2005 05:32:54 EDT Hello to all, I'm looking for a large pattern for a tablecloth. I know that this will be a mamoth project but I would prefer a pattern which is all lace instead of inserts. Does anyone know where I might be able to find one - I must be honest and say that I prefer Torchon lace to any others but anything would be great. Thanks in advance. RE: [lace] Lace books
Greetings Spiders, Another fairly comprehensive book on Tonder Lace is: The Technique of Tonder Lace by Inge Skovgaard No idea if its still in print - the copy I have was published by Batsford in 1991. Best wishes Andrea from Cambridge, UK where April Showers are promised later today. Can anyone recommend a Tønder technique book? I noticed that Karen Trend Nissen book 3 is Tønder lace, has anyone learnt from this one? I'm not ready to start Tønder but it's on the back burner and looking through a book in advance works wonders when the time comes. RE: [lace] Lacemakers Circle AGM
Dear Margot, I believe South Wootton Village Hall, where the AGM is being held, is about 3 miles from Kings Lynn. There is a map in the latest Lacemaker, but the quality of it is not brilliant. I could try scanning it and sending it to you as an attachment, but it doesn't even show Kings Lynn on it. I can recommend www.theaa.com (The UK Automobile Association) for route planning - if you put in your start and finish points it will plan the route for you and provide a map. I would guess that a taxi from the station would be the best bet - I'm sure the local drivers will know where South Wootton is. Not sure if I'm going to make it to the AGM or not. [lace-chat] secret pal thanks
Dear Secret Pal, I have just returned from vacation to find your parcel waiting for me - it was the first thing I opened, after all who needs bills!. The surprises were really nice - did you make the edging on the hanky? Two more bobbins too. I'm off to raid my bead tin to make some pretty spangles for them. The address book and pen are really usefull and the soap smells delicious. I spider on its web is great - I've stuck it to the corner of my computer monitor for the present. RE: [lace] Lead weighted bobbins
Dear Spiders, I always use the rhyme: Weft goes from LEFT to right to remind me which is the warp and which is the weft in weaving - I suppose in bobbin lace the weaver pr is the equivalent to the weft on woven fabric. Hope this helps you remember. from Andrea Lamble in a rather damp and slushy Cambridge UK - the overnight snow is melting fast. The differential identification is Tapestry bobbins They are weighted but I have never seen them square as that would make them difficult to pass thought the warp/weft ( I am not sure which) threads.\ Brian and Jean from Cooranbong Australia _ Want to block unwanted pop-ups? RE: [lace] Lacemaking classes
Hi there, I dropped out of teaching for the local authority classes about 10 years ago when they wanted all classes to be independently financially viable. For the daytime class, which had a lot of concession fee payers, this would have meant enrolling 24+ students. With the individual tuition involved in lace making, this was not on as far as I was concerned. For me 10 students is plenty, especially if they are all working on something different. I still meet once a month with some of the students from the classes I taught (plus a few new ones) but in a private house. Would like to do more but with a full time job and other hobbies (and the family of course) I just can't find the time and energy. I was made to do a 'teaching adults course' as a condition of employment but really it was of very little relevance to teaching lace making or any other craft with individual student needs - just took up lots of my time. The tutor of the Painting class I go to has recently stopped teaching for the local authority because of all the bureaucracy/inspections etc and is now hiring a local village hall one evening a week so we can continue to meet. Nicer surroundings than the local college too. From what I've heard I'm really glad to be out of it all. Happy Lacing Andrea in a dull and gloomy Cambridge, UK. _ It's fast, it's easy and it's free. [lace] Cloth stitch/whole stitch
Dear Spiders, Having nothing better to do this lunch time and having a moderate library of lace books, (approx 100 books ranging from Mincoff and Marriage through to Sandi Woods latest publication covering both English and Continental laces) I decided to do a quick search to ascertain which of the two terms was most commonly used. My findings are: It would seem that the use of both terms was about equal across the books that were studied. The publication date of the book and the lace style covered do not seem to affect which term was used. The use of the term Linen stitch for CTC occurs in some Continental lace books. Nowhere did I come across the term Whole stitch defined as CTCT. Half stitch was consistently used throughout to mean (CT) I agree wholeheartedly with the comments of others that the most useful thing is to define your terms at the beginning of the publication. RE: [lace] help on english terminology
Dear All, I was taught lace making in England (all be it 28 years ago) and have always used the terminology Cloth Stitch (for CTC) and Cloth Stitch and Twist ( for CTCT). I've been teaching lace making for 25+ years and all my pupils have been taught this terminology (they are also told that they may see the term Whole stitch in some books and that this is the same as Cloth Stitch). I was taught that it was called Cloth Stitch because when you made a strip in the stitch it looked like woven cloth. Seems logical to me! Happy lacing Andrea from a cold Cambridge, UK where it might snow again later. It would be nice if we English-speaking lace makers could standardize our terminology. At the moment, we have to find somewhere in the book/article how the author defines the two terms. Here are the usual definitions: U.S.: Cloth stitch is cross, twist, cross and Whole stitch is cross, twist, cross, twist (i.e. 2 half stitches making 1 whole stitch) U.K.: Whole stitch is cross, twist, cross and Whole stitch and Twist is cross, twist, cross, twist ('cloth stitch' isn't used) As a 'neutral' Canadian, I think the U.S. terminology is more logical and prefer to use it. _ Use MSN Messenger to send music and pics to your friends http://www.msn.co.uk/messenger - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace-chat] Secret Pal - thanks
Dear Secret Pal, Thank you so much for the package that arrived yesterday. The magnetic note pad is already installed on the door of the fridge and the pen is to hand. The cloth pocket will be ideal for keeping scissors, thread, spare bobibins etc. to hand when I'm lacemaking or sewing - I'll be able to attach it to the side of my armchair. The bobbins are beautiful - so nice to have some made in your native wood. The pictures of your country may give me some inspiration for a painting. Hi Jane, I believe what you need is Melatonin - certainly in the USA you can buy bottles of tablets, of varying strengths - we found them with the vitamin supplements in a K Mart or similar store whilst travelling in the US last year. [lace] Lace parasols
Hi All, I have recently been lucky enough to purchase (from ebay) a couple of dainty antique parasols, with heavily rotted/damaged silk covers, but with perfect working frames. I am now in the process of removing the old fabric and making templates to recover the frames in new silk. My plan is to make a lace outer for each of them (eventually) and can't decide whether to try and design my own patterns from scratch or base them on an existing motifs? Do I make all sections the same or do I try and design the lace so that each section is different? Oh decisions decisions!! and oh for more free time - sometimes think there should be more hours in the day and days in the week to fit in all the things I would like to do. Has anyone out there done this sort of thing before and do you have any tips to pass on? Hopefully I'll be able to post some progress photos on the web in due course. RE: [lace] Coloured prickings
Another way around this problem is to scan the pricking with a desktop scanner and then change the background colour to white in Photoshop or similar program. You can then print out the pricking in black and white. Happy lacing Andrea in a rather damp Cambridge. From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [lace] Coloured prickings Date: Thu, 30 Sep 2004 14:39:08 EDT One of my students, in conjunction with an on-the-ball photocopy-shop man, found out that she could have her black on orange pricking (which she didn't like) copied onto white by the simple expedient of him turning off the background colour in a colour photocopy machine ie it only picked up the black. She was then able to cover this with her preferred choice of blue film. I am now trying to work out if I can do this on my home (and more basic) colour photocopier, but if I can I haven't been able to work it out yet. If my explanation is clear enough, and your copy shop can understand you, this might be an option for dealing with the bright RED pricking in Tonderkniplinger. - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ It's fast, it's easy and it's free. Re: [lace] USO's
Dear Lorri, I believe the pattern you want is in Lace Number 61, January 1991. The pricking is on page 30 - a picture of the finished work is on the front cover and p61. I've often been tempted to make it myself. With all the talk of copyright etc. I'm not sure how I stand as far as copying the picture and sending it to you. The design was by Sandra Hobbs.
