[lace] Construction foam pillows
I have purchased the foam pillows at the last two conventions then cut them down so I could hand carry the section with the lace, pricking and bobbins.  Last month, I used a straight edge to score the foam and then used a serrated knife to cut the foam.  It fit perfectly into my block pillow at home.  Last year my friends husband cut my two pillows down on his table saw before I flew home.  That was easier but a bit frightening as I saw my bobbins, wrapped up in the cover I used for the pillow rushing toward the saw.  It sliced it off like a dream.  This year my cut was not as perfect, but it did not make a mess in the bedroom.  This is the way I will use for pillows at conventions in the future when flying.  This year I had close to a hundred Binche bobbins on the pillow for carrying home.  They got a little tangled when I was cutting the foam, next year I will pin them down more so they don't slide out of the bobbin holders.Janice  Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, www.jblace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Lace Collections
Hi Nancy,I know that IOLI has a study lace collection called the Koon Collection that is available for charter guilds to borrow for study by members.  You could contact IOLI to see if they would be willing to add the Neff Collection to their laces if you leave it to them in your will.  I do remember when I was on the board that the collection did go out a number of times, complete with white gloves, but have no idea how often it is borrowed now.Janice  Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, www.jblace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] email settings
Avital, Jeri and I have been trying to figure out why my emails that appear in the digest form always have a capital A at the end of my sentences. I thought it was because I was a touch typist and always did a second space at the end of a sentence without thinking. Finally this morning Avital told me when I am composing an email to change to plain text. In Yahoo mail it was not easily apparent on how to do that, but she found that at the bottom of my compose email page, there are two little >> that I can click on and this changes my text to plain text. I don't like the look of it and I will try to remember to do it each time I write to Arachne. This is a test for the next digest to see if it works. It might help Alice and Lyn as their emails come with funny characters in the digest. [lace] Wearing lace
I wore a dark blue tee shirt at convention which has a linen lace collar made probably 15 or more years ago.  It is on its fourth tee now. Anyway, I was sorting my laundry and without thinking, put it in the dark wash. I was lucky that nothing else bled into the water, but the lace came out beautifully. Chucked it in the dryer and then gave it a steam press with the iron. Good as new and ready for my next lace event. The pattern was a Bridget Cook one with fans and spiders, and I always get compliments when I wear it. Even had one from Bridget at convention once.Janice  Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, www.jblace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] After I'm gone
Arachne Lace is usually quiet at this time of year, but thankfully we had lots of digests in the last week, even if it was mainly about the survey.  I tried to generate a digest before the IOLI convention by sending a long chatty post, but unfortunately I received that digest on Thursday, after the Arachne lunch on the Monday.  I hope I did not offend anyone with my long post.  Lace Chat seems to have died as I can't remember the last time I got a reflected message on Chat.  Maybe I have been kicked off and it is going strong. Let me know if that is the case. Anyway, the talk about lace design got me thinking about what will happen to all my original lace designs I have made for conventions and lace magazines.  At present most are stored in an archival box or are hanging around the house.  The latest winner at IOLI is hanging on my family room wall.  Not too many are on show as we downsized and have less wall space.  I wonder what my kids will do with my stuff once I "pop my clogs" as I used to say in England.  Is there an outlet to sell my lace pieces somewhere?  I still like to buy books, bobbins and thread, so if there is a way of financing my splurges, it would be nice to find it.  Next question is how much would I ask for an original lace piece?  I have no idea how to go about it.  Do any other lace designers have outlets for their pieces?  I am not savvy enough to build a website to sell online. Any ideas for this new topic while I am still young enough to deal with it?Janice Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, www.jblace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] County Fair Win
I sent an email yesterday about the Arachne get together in Indianapolis, and it occurred to me that the digests are few and far apart these days, so in the hope of generating one before I leave on Saturday, I would post another email. I now live in southern California and am a member of the Silvergate Lacers.  We are encouraged to submit lace entries in the San Diego County Fair so that our lace category never gets canceled.  I entered this year and won the Best of the Lace Division so I got a beautiful large rosette, plus a First ribbon and an Honorary ribbon for my second piece.  I attended a nice presentation ceremony just before the fair closed on July 4th.  As those who go to IOLI and hear how many demonstration hours each chartered guild has accumulated for the year, you may have been surprised to hear that our small guild usually has 1200 hours or more.  This is because we demo at the fair for a month every day it is open. They have been doing it for 37 years!!  It is our guild 40th anniversary in October. I was interviewed by phone for a local paper while I was up in Fresno.  As the interview came out of the blue, I babbled on about lappets and Thomas Lester.  I wondered what would be printed.  You can read the article online now at http://myvalleynews.com/local/blair-wins-best-division-lace/  My winning piece, a Beds giraffe, was a design from a lappet that Holly Van Sciver had redrawn. If you go to her website, I think it is still on there. My second piece was a teapot and cup designed by Kumiko Nagasaki.  She designed the Binche teapot especially for me at the Winter Lace Conference in February in Costa Mesa.  I think it took her just over a week to design two teapots and a large doily and do the technical drawings. Amazing.  As the theme for the fair this year was Mad About The Fair - Alice in Wonderland meets Steampunk, I chose a background of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter pouring tea.  That was the Honorary Mention as it was in the same category as the Beds giraffe.  Note to self: make different styles of lace. [lace] IOLI Arachne Get Together Monday July 18
I have been trying to get something set up for us to meet but here we are a week away and I have not been successful.  I never heard back from the hotel.  I suggest that we meet at the food court in the Mall, which is supposedly available over a pedestrian walkway attached to the hotel, on Monday lunch at noon.  Hopefully we can take over an area there and be together.  At least we can purchase what we might like to eat or take your lunch over there.  We can do our free raffle if anyone brings items for donation. [lace] Teacher Showcase at IOLI
I have arranged for us to have a table at the Teacher Showcase on Monday at 7:00 pm at the IOLI convention.  Please bring any Christmas or Bookmark exchange samples you would be willing to display on the Arachne table to the showcase.  I will keep an eye on things but remember to come and collect them before you leave the ballroom.  I have a couple of bookmarks and need to dig out my Christmas cards if they are handy and not stored in the roof. I doubt the ballroom will have wi-fi available but we will have slips of paper with the information on how to sign up for any newbies.  If you have something that you think is important that should be on the sign on the table, please send it to me privately so I can assemble the information together.  I will print up the arachne patterns for display. I am still working on the luncheon as the hotel may be able to do something for us.  News of that when I hear back from the co-hosts. I have been approached about Arachne having a table at the Teacher Showcase so that we can inform lacemakers about Arachne.  Not sure if we would have anything to display, but we could bring along our lace work and maybe have a hand-out for visitors.  What are your thoughts on that subject?  I don't mind being one of the people at the table but would need help advising people as it is a long time since I signed on to Arachne.  If you like the idea and want to give me some information that should appear on the flier, let me know what it should contain (history, access info, etc.) Janice Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, www.jblace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] IOLI Convention Arachne Get Together
Found out that we might have two options for our get together this year as the hotel has a small restaurant and not much room in the lobby, and would charge us if we wanted to use a room.  As I understand it, the shopping mall is attached to the hotel with an overpass bridge and they have a food court.  We could possibly meet at the food court and push some tables together, that way people can buy their preferred food items, or even take their own unless there is some rule about not doing that.  I have taken food to my local food court in the past and no-one has said anything. Monday or Tuesday might be good days for that. The other possibility is that we try to get seated with each other at the Tuesday dinner.  I am hoping to find out if they are having sign up sheets for meals like we have had the past few years.  That way we can have some Arachne tables and remain for a short time after the meal and before we go to the Tat Off.  I will get back to you when I hear further. Let me have your feedback on those ideas. [lace] News/IOLI convention classes.
Anita wrote: I am flying again and really appreciate the local co-hosts offering the purchase of builders foam pillows ($5) which saves room on the flights to and from convention.  I will be taking a sharp serrated knife with me this year so that I can cut my 24" square pillow down to a 9" square one.  I also take a yard of fabric with me to cover it while at convention.  I can stand the louder noise of the bobbins on the foam for a week, but when I get home, the cut down block will fit into my block pillow.  The extra fabric that was around the larger block is useful for wrapping the lace and bobbins in the journey home in my hand luggage, then I fold it up under the cut block to bring the height up to my taller block pillow.  Posting this information so it might be useful for others that fly to conventions.  Last year I stayed with a friend in Illinois and her husband cut two blocks down for me.  This year I am only taking one class so only need one pillow. We have not heard from any local Indiana Arachne that might help organize our Arachne get together yet. Please speak up if you are a lurker and are helping at the convention. [lace] No News, here is some
Finally I got a digest today and I noticed that the first email in the digest was sent six days ago.Yes, Jeri, we do need more postings to keep the digests popping up. You mentioned the Spring issue of the Bulletin. Mine has yet to arrive!  I hope it is not as long as some of the past few issues have been in coming.  I know my convention entry from last year is being featured because the editor sent me a copy of the page for approval.  I am not going to mention it to my hubby as last time he got more anxious about it arriving late than I did.  Every day he would go to the mail box across the street and come back and complain about it not being there.  For those folks who are not members of IOLI, you can see the visor I made (which didn't place), at the bottom of my Milanese gallery on my website www.jblace.com I did receive an email from the convention registrar this week, and do have my class with Holly Van Sciver in Lester Beds.  I do hope that she is able to complete the ostrich picture that I want to make.  What classes did everyone else get?  My guild, Silvergate Lacers, who meet in Rancho Sante Fe, near San Diego have all been working on bobbin lace flowers.  We are assembling a banner of colorful flowers and insects to hang at the back of the booth that we will share with two other lace guilds at the San Diego County Fair.  The fair lasts for the month of June, and just into July, and we hope to have demonstrators there almost every day that the fair is open. I got tired of making flowers and have been working on a needlelace dragonfly.  Got lots of compliments this morning when I took it to my knitting group for show and tell. What are your lace guilds doing these days? Come on folks, have you any questions or reports to send to us, don't send it all to FaceBook. [lace] Arachne Get Together in Indianapolis
Hi Liz,I am no longer involved with the convention committee, having spent the past five years as the Teacher Coordinator, so I am not in a position to find out about the hotel or the schedule.  Looking at the schedule online http://www.internationalorganizationoflace.org/Conventions/2016Conven tion/Schedule/schedule.html I can see a half hour on Tuesday evening after the meal and before the Tat Off where we could meet, or maybe before the Teacher Showcase.  I have no idea if packed lunches will be available this year and whether we can meet during that time and eat together. Maybe we have an Arachne member who is on the hosting guild and can help us out. [lace] Guild projects
Starting a new topic.  If you belong to a lace guild, what types of projects do you do as a group? I joined Silvergate Lacers in southern California and last year went to the San Diego County Fair at the Delmar Race Track.  Silvergate has been in existence since 1975 and taking part demonstrating and having a booth there to show off all types of lace.  The fair lasts a month so the work is shared with two other San Diego lace guilds.  This year we decided to add a little color to the display and are working on a background of flowers.  This came about because Linda Knott, who is the glue holding us all together, worked about four flowers while do demonstrations last year.  As a guild, at our meeting this month we started working on large simple daisies that even our beginners could do.  I now have done three and am working on my fourth. The theme for the fair this year is "Through the Looking Glass" so we are thinking of adding some lace teapots and teacups to the display table. My other guild back in Illinois always have a lace challenge every other year as they hold a lace day on the opposite year, and it gives them something to work towards.  The members were provided with an outline and had to work a filling of their own choice. One year it was the shape of a leaf, the next an egg shape and last time they worked fillings for the elephant found on the Lace Guilds young members page.  The members then vote on their favorites to find a winner.  I wonder what they will come up with this year? So, what do you all do with your guilds?Janice Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, www.jblace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Arachne exchange
I received a nice dream catcher from Sallie Owenby a couple of weeks ago and today I got a card from Jenny Brandis with her Christmas ornament. Both are hanging in our Christmas tree now.  The ornament from Jenny is made from red and gold thread and IMHO the photo online does not do it justice as the gold thread does not show up well. I designed my Santa card from a doodle earlier this year but now I keep seeing triangular Santa's. Today I bought a money holder card with one on and then in the mail I got a Christmas card from England with one on it, and the other day I was decorating our tree and the last ornament I hung was a stuffed triangular Santa ornament.  I seem to remember it was a gift years ago in a Secret Santa exchange. [lace] Lace8 users/Arachne Christmas exchange
Jenny is doing a wonderful job on the Facebook Lace8 Users Group that she has set up.  I have learnt so much from the group and especially from the wonderful videos that Jenny has been producing,  I love listening to her soft Australian accent as she explains everything so simply.  If you are considering using a lace design program in future, you should join the group for the knowledge that is being imparted there.  Hopefully my future designs will incorporate working diagrams instead of the written explanations I usually use.  Thank you Jenny.  Also we need to thank her for the work she has done on the Arachne Christmas exchange.  I am looking forward to receiving my card from her.  My other card from Sallie arrived and enclosed was a dream catcher that will be going on my tree now that I have it up. I have been using my Lace8 program on my MacBook Pro and have struggled at times making the Microsoft program do things, so much so, that my family decided I needed a new HP laptop for Christmas so that I can dedicate it to Lace8.  WooHoo.  Hope I can remember how to use it after so many years on my Apple.Janicehttps://youtu.be/XC82Jx2Fbr0 Part 2 https://youtu.be/2gQZNTfIlNU Part 3 https://youtu.be/rYSVfNyefsg Regards Jenny Brandis.>  Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, www.jblace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Must I push down pins?
You will make life easier if you push down the pins, but you only need to keep the outer row of pins.  You can reuse the ones in the center of the lace if you are not already doing so.  You need to keep the outer row because when you are making a sewing you do not want to accidentally pull too hard on the opposite side which might pull your lace out of shape.  I use a pin pusher to lift my pins as I found it was easy to catch the lace with the fork type pin lifters. Still don't have my Bulletin :-(   My husband has stopped telling me it hasn't come.  I know I am on the list as I checked that my subscription had been updated by the Membership Chair because I won a years membership for getting the Popular Vote for the lace on the cover. [lace] Multi-part prickings tricky; skeins also tricky
Julie, Instead of worrying about the length of the fringe, can't you  start the scarf with a straight edge and then add the fringe when it is all finished. It is easy enough to use a crochet hook to loop the fringe onto the edge. I presume that you are going to make three pieces of lace and join them together for the full width. When I made my large scarf, I made a wide roller to use down the center of my 24" block pillow so that I could work the full width at the same time.  I was concerned I would run out of silk thread before I completed the third piece which was why I made it all at the same time. I just had enough.Janice  Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, www.jblace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] IOLI Bulletin
I'm still waiting for my Bulletin but my husband seems more anxious than I am.  Every day he announces "no magazine again" when he goes to collect our mail.  I saw the cover on the IOLI Facebook page so I know it is on its way. Thanks Liz for your comments. The cover piece was a technical entry so had to be made from someone else's pattern.  I saw the sunflower in the Lace Express in the early 2000's.  I had a friend who has every copy of Lace Express track it down for me.  Because of size constraints I had to reduce the pattern by 50% and changed the thread so it would work.  The hardest part was trying to make all those leaf tallies consistent in size.  I was so pleased that it received the Popular Vote as well.  That is always a compliment from contemporaries. Hope the Bulletin comes soon.  Maybe I will get to see it on Saturday when I attend the Freeway Lace Day in Torrance.Janice  Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, www.jblace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Lace Disaster Almost
Today at our lace picnic in Mission Bay park, San Diego I moved my lace table to a spot under a tree when the sun became too intense.  It was hard to see my fine silk thread on my Blonde pattern in the sun.  I stepped away to bring my chair over to the table when I heard a thud, turned and saw my table had fallen over and the pillow was upside down. Didn't realize the ground was so sloping there. The hardest part was retrieving thousands of pins from my pin box which had fallen open.  We couldn't leave pins in the grass where children might be playing.  Luckily Linda Knott had a long handle magnet which picked many up quickly.  I was picking them up individually and separating them from the grass and pine needles when I realized I was wearing my lace bracelet which had a magnetic closure.  Using that speeded things up and we hopefully got all of the steel pins.  I did the trick of holding the pillow up to let the bobbins fall down.  I only had about 28 pairs and it didn't take too long to sort the threads out.  Just got going again when a thread caught on my ring and broke.  Not bad considering the disaster it could have been.  Note to self: Don't move the table without pinning down the bobbins and closing the pin box tightly, also maybe not wear jewelry when dealing with fine thread. Second disaster was DH was playing with another husband and his Australian boomerangs and he tossed one that came back so fast and high it landed in the bay.  Drifted out instead of in.  The first one lost in the water was retrieved by a passing snorkeler but he had left when the second one went in. Nice day making lace by the water with two other lace guilds, plus a good selection of food at the pot luck picnic.Janice Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, 60 miles north of San Diego www.jblace.com www.lacemakersofillinois.org - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Re: spiders in lace
I thought Torchon was worked face up, but I work most other laces face down as there if often a need to end a portion of the lace before starting another section, such as in Milanese.  I find that my laces that are face down have a flat look to them when turned over, such as Russian tape lace with the chevron gimp.  The clue is in the pricking and the photo of the lace if the lace is reversed in the photo.  That is often not the case in Torchon where the lace is the same front or back, as in a bookmark, unless there is a headside and a footsie. I just started a class in Binche with Kumiko Nakazaki and realized it was face down. Great class and Kumiko even serenaded us with her violin before class.Janice  Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, 60 miles north of San Diego www.jblace.com www.lacemakersofillinois.org - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Arachne Get together
We had our Arachne lunch at the IOLI convention today.  There was inexpensive food for purchase in one half of the ballroom and a second private half of the ballroom was reserved for Arachne.  I think it was our largest one ever with probably 35 to 40 ladies present.  We had a fun free raffle with everyone taking home a prize.  Thanks to Anita Hansen for organizing it and making many of the prizes.  Lovely to put names to faces.  We had 2 lacemakers from Australia, a few from Canada, one from Brazil (a first I think), some from Europe and lots from the US. We had two people join us by mistake but they became members before the end of the lunch. We hope the Indiana Arachne members can organize something on the same lines for Indianapolis.Janice Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, 60 miles north of San Diego www.jblace.com www.lacemakersofillinois.org - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. I heard on the grapevine today that the Anime convention ends on Sunday afternoon and they are allowing late 5:00 pm checkouts.  If you are planning on arriving on Sunday rather than Monday, please be patient while you wait for your room.  Sit down, take it easy and enjoy people watching, especially if they are in strange costumes. By now, most students will have received their class information.  I got the classes I wanted. Binche with Kumiko Nakazaki and Intro to Blonde with Ulrike on Thursday. As I understand it, there will be a concession stand where you can buy lunches and Arachne members will be allowed to eat in part of the ballroom together, bringing in your own food and beverage.  The tentative time is Tuesday between 11:30 and 1:00.  We could do our usual free raffle drawing if you want to bring an item to share. [lace] Searching for DMC Broder Machine in colors
I have some colors in DMC Broder Machine 50 including a few variegated ones I picked up on my travels. They either came from quilting stores or from lace vendors, probably when traveling through Iowa to Utah 2 years ago. I would think DMC 50 is thinner than regular sewing thread which is usually size 30. Check out the rest of the lace thread vendors. I have been buying Mettler 60 sewing thread at sewing shops locally for the color selection but the thread does tend to unwind and make it easier to shred when doing sewings. I like using DMC 50 for white work and there were or maybe still are different shades of white available. Don't have enough colors yet to be considered a workable pallet. Do you have fabric shops or quilting shops in your area. Might be worth a phone call. [lace] Lace
Got my copy of the British Lace magazine today and sat down straight away for my lace fix. Imagine my surprise when I spotted on page 58 under News from the Library the cover of the IOLI Bulletin with the photo of my gold necklace design on the cover. You can see my photo of it on my website. It was the winning entry in the IOLI Gold Rush competition in Sacramento. Then on the last page I spotted a poppy photo and thought, hmm, that looks similar to my poppy design. Read the article written by Janis Savage and I remembered she wrote to me about making a poppy. I had totally forgotten about it. What a nice surprise for me this morning. This morning I took my lace pillow to my knitting group to impress them with a piece of black Ipswich I was working and I even had time to sit outside this afternoon and make some more lace. Re: [lace] Thread management/organisation
My, two digests in one day!! I used to save all my thread ends for a friend who used them to stuff little hearts she made that were given to a local hospital through her church organization. Mine now languish on the bobbins, in bags, sometimes with the original thread spool, until I need the bobbins and then I discard the thread. I do use some for magic thread purposes. I used to be frugal like Clay but when you realize that in the scheme of things, throwing a little thread away is no big deal. I do load up one half of a pair of bobbins so that I can reuse the remainder further down the project. Janice p.s. Got the Success to the Lace Pillow book in the mail today from a friend who sent me two bone (antler) bobbins for my birthday this month so I could look them up. [lace] IOLI Convention Registration
I heard on the grapevine that some folks have not received their Bulletin copy yet. Mine came over a week ago. The date to send in applications for classes is February 1, so time is getting short if you want to make sure you get the first choice. If you or your friends have not had the Bulletin yet, all the information on classes, registration forms, etc. are on the website. http://www.internationalorganizationoflace.org/2015Convention/index.html Another thing to note is that this year, if you do not have a second choice available, your registration will be returned and you will have to apply again with the second date being the one used by the Registrar. This is because in previous years people who hoped to get their first choice even if the class was full had to be contacted by the Registrar which slowed things down. Hope to see you all there. [lace] Seasons Greetings
Just got a Lace digest and was reading through the emails, and I saw the one from Sue Harvey in Norfolk, UK, decided to go to the Arachne card exchange to check out Rebecca's tree ornament. I was disappointed to see that there wasn't a scan of it. Might I suggest that those people lucky enough to receive a card that does not have a corresponding photo on the site, that they take a scan and send it to Jenny. I would also like to thank Jenny for her work on collecting all the cards together for us to see. I particularly like the robin card made by Sue Vossier on page 8. Sue, is that pattern available anywhere? Thanks to Gon for the weekly pattern, always interesting to see them and this one is in christmas colors. Wow, Lyn, I am in awe. I could never work that much lace that went into the altar cloths. I think making yardage is tedious work when I have to do it once the novelty of learning the pattern has worn off. I guess I just like the challenge of trying a new pattern but have a short attention span. :-) I did make a lace bracelet with beads just before Christmas for my daughter, only to be told "I never wear bracelets". Her loss, my gain. Just have to look in my closet to see what I have that is blue to wear it with. Enough ramblings while DH watches the soccer (football) on tv. [lace] Christine Mirecki's Schal Sabrina
I made this scarf pattern a couple of years ago, love it but it was hard tensioning the recommended silk thread because of the slubs. My concern about doing it in separate sections was whether I would run out of thread for the last section or whether I would be able to join the sections and still do it so it looked neat. I did not start with a fringe, but do not see why that could not work. I made a 24" roller pillow wide enough by using my square block pillow sideways with the roller placed into the space where the center blocks would sit. I made the original pillow using builders foam in a wooden frame with a foam core base. My original center squares were ethafoam, but my roller pillow was made with a center made of a pool noodle and covered with about 3 pieces of a foam camping bed purchased from a sports store. Finally covered with cotton fabric. It worked very well and was wide enough to handle all the bobbins needed for the full scarf. Hi, As Anita has posted about the class information being available on the IOLI website now, I thought I would let you all know that I have it on good authority that next year we will be able to purchase box lunches at a concession counter and take them into an area of the ballroom so that our Arachne members can have our get-together at lunch time. Check out the teacher/class information. We have so much available next year it will be hard to choose which classes you want. I get to assemble the information for the Bulletin and website, working with the teachers, but I never decide what I want to take until I see the Bulletin. Later we will have photos of the laces and the full supply lists for most of them on the website. We are trying some short 3 hour classes throughout the week for those that don't want to take two 12 hour classes, and hopefully, with local advertising we might draw in some new lacemakers. Hope you enjoy anticipating what to sign up for, and please share the information with your guilds. [lace] Arachne card exchange
Am I the first to receive a christmas card in the exchange? My first one came today from Lin Hudren from Overton, Nevada. It is a really neat design of a lacemaker and I think it is in Romanian Point. Better get on and finish my lace. I have one done and the other is almost done. [lace] Cantu lace instruction
There is a video on youtube but it is in Italian which I do not understand. There seems to be a lot of explanation on how to work the pattern but about half way in, it does show how to do it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMOijsC86Eg I also seem to remember that some Italian ladies came to IOLI convention a number of years ago and they had a video that they were selling about Cantu lace. At the time I was not interested so did not follow up with them. Maybe someone else remembers it, or maybe there is a copy in the IOLI library that can be borrowed. [lace] LOKK pink ribbon start
Susan, It is a Milanese start, gives you a flat edge. Twist first two pairs, ctct next two pairs, twist twice. Now take right hand pair and hang over next pin. Hang two more pairs on same pin, twist left pair twice, tctc right pairs, twist twice and hang right pair over next pin, etc. Your worker is on the left for the start of the row. Re: [lace] Gutermann silk thread
I looked online for Guterman buttonhole thread and I think the one I saw in Sweden was 10 m to the spool and Tex 75. I am not sure what "Tex" means though. [lace] Lace patterns
Just wanted to say that my DD has updated my website with more free patterns, some of which you may not have seen before, including a teapot that was on the cover of the British Lace magazine years ago. I noticed there are a few pinholes missing on the steam, probably because the pattern was copied from another source as I had it on my old computer. [lace] Evaluation forms and expectations
I think it is a good idea that teachers should see a blank evaluation form and I intend to contact the IOLI Education Chair to get a copy that I can send along with their agreement. As Devon mentioned, some teachers might not be aware of what they get assessed on. Of course, many of the regular teachers have had many chances to see these forms before, but they can disregard the attachment if they wish. [lace] Teaching antics
I hope everyone fills in the comment section of the forms which are handed out to students at the end of the classes at IOLI conventions, whether good or bad. Having been to almost all the conventions in the last 18 years, I have written about poor teachers who did not spend time with all the students and had time monopolized by a few students who probably should not have taken the class because they were not ready for that style of lace. I had a teacher once who was balancing her checkbook and expected us to come up to the top table with our questions. A bit daunting for a new lacemaker. I had an teacher, early on in my lacemaking life, that seemed to dislike me on sight and would not come to me when I needed help. She would work her way around the room and stop at the person on my right, then work back around the room and never came to me until the time she asked if anyone needed help and my neighbor said "Janice does". I was too shy to speak up back then. Can't think what I did for her to dislike me, maybe asked too many questions when she demonstrated something, but you can bet your boots I never took a class from her again. Her loss. These comment forms are the property of the IOLI Education Committee and they compile them into the IOLI teacher database. Prospective co-hosts can get a copy of this database and decide if they really want that particular teacher. Your anonymous comments will be taken into consideration and if a teacher has many low scores, they may not get invited again. As part of the IOLI convention committee we are considering having a handout for teachers in future on teaching techniques such as * How to deal with a student whose skill level is below that of the class and is struggling * How to deal with a student whose skill level is above that of the class and is bored * How to deal with a student who is demanding an inordinate amount of the teacher's time (to the detriment of the other students in the class) If you have any suggestions, you can write to me privately and I will pass them on to the committee. Re: [lace] Sacramento Arachne Photo
What a shame that vendors are not prepared to go to lace days in the UK. It is so much better to see the books and threads. We have a problem getting them as the distances they have to come make it very expensive to attend. In my Illinois guild we always had a vendor who could also teach a class the day before and the day of our lace day to make it more worthwhile. Now I live in CA, there are more opportunities to get to lace events but the distance and traffic make me cautious about driving. Yesterday I attended a lace meeting in Redlands, about an hour drive north of here, but when we came out I was in rush hour traffic and Interstate 10 was a parking lot. Plus we had unusual weather, a thunderstorm that had torrential rain. Felt sorry for the guy in the convertible but we do need the rain. [lace] IOLI Convention 2015
I know it is a little early to be thinking of next summer and another great convention, but I did want to let you all know that next year there are 3 Arachne members on the co-host committee and they will be planning our get-together. We are hoping that there will be a concession stand where we can pick up our lunch and meet in a private room, but we will have to see what works out. It was great to see everyone, including Janet Goodacre. She and I met over 10 years ago when I visited her on Vancouver Island and also met Bev Walker and the rest of her guild. I have met so many Arachne members over the years. We had a great contingency from overseas at our get-together this time. Lots of prizes in our free raffle. I won a tea towel commemorating Queen Elizabeths jubilee which was contributed by Janet Theaker. It was so nice to meet Janet and her husband and they were having a great vacation with Sallie Owenby and her spouse. Janet and I exchanged Christmas cards last year on Arachne, and this time she won a little humbug sewing bag made in spider fabric I had contributed to the raffle. I know I mentioned this in a previous email but that one was supposed to be a private email and I goofed so you all got it. My convention was really good. I didn't seem as harried as last year. I am on the IOLI committee and arrange the teacher agreements and info that appears in the Bulletin and online, and the Teacher Showcase. Did everyone like the fact that I included a more detailed class description, photos and supply lists, where available, online last time? If so, I will do it again but I have not received much feedback on that. A good deal of convention time is spent in meetings for this year, including the Teacher Meeting and those for 2015, 2016 conventions. I did miss the 2017 meeting, but I didn't miss any class time. My time on that committee is up next year and we are always looking for someone to shadow me for a year before taking over. Any volunteers? I took Ipswich with Karen Thompson. I thought that would be easy as it just looks like Torchon but in black silk. No, not simple, you really need to study the excellent diagrams she provided to make sure you didn't go wrong. I did go wrong a few times and did retro lace quite a bit. I was able to work a full repeat in one sample using 35 pair of bobbins, and started my second sample which includes Kat stitch ground. Something I had not done before but once I had it established, it is a nice ground to work. I think the host group did an excellent job and everything went smoothly, apart from my buying a book by Ulrike Voelcker that I already had on my bookcase at home. The only thing we could complain about was housekeeping as one day they never did tidy our room. We can live with an unmade bed but to have no coffee for the morning was bad. Good job our friends in an adjoining room had spare. I bought a couple of books, more thread than I can possibly use in a year, only one bobbin, and a commemorative square bobbin with California orange poppies on it, but I did a lot of eye candy shopping. Wish I had unlimited funds, but then it just means more for my family to get rid of when I pop my clogs. Tomorrow I am going to the San Bernardino History Museum to meet up with the Cross Twisters. They demonstrate there every week and I guess we get to gossip about lace and stuff when no one is visiting. Sunday will be a picnic at Mission Bay in San Diego with the three lace guilds from the area. A chance for DH to meet some lacemakers and their families. Life is good in sunny southern California. Re: [lace] How can you estimate thread
If you do use the Gutterman 100/3 silk, you will probably be able to replenish your stocks easily at Jo Ann Fabrics if you choose one of their basic colors. As mentioned, work a front and then you can estimate how much you need for the balance. Hopefully you can wait until Jo Ann's have sale on Gutterman thread to stock up on what you need. With regard to how much to wind; wind all the bobbins fully. You will run out at some time and have to add thread, so don't be afraid of joining in new full bobbins. If you are running out closer to the end of the piece, an extra twist with a bobbin that has more thread, with your emptier one, will not even be noticed in the great scheme of things. A bolster pillow would be nice, but some of us are not adept at the hands up method of lacemaking. I would use a nine block block pillow so that I could turn the work around where needed and move finished areas onto the side blocks. Leave yourself enough apron room for working to avoid the back ache. Luckily you won't be using hundreds of bobbins for your Russian lace. When you finish it, make sure you post a picture for us to see. [lace] IOLI Convention
Hi Agnes, Janet and I had a long chinwag this evening after the annual meeting. I spotted her in the lobby with her hubby. They are having a good vacation touring around with Sallie and her husband. I met her at the Arachne meeting on Monday evening. I won the QEII jubilee tea towel she had brought and she won a humbug bag I had made with spider fabric. The set meals so far have been great but the service in the restaurant is very, very slow. Hopefully our banquet tomorrow will be as good as the previous meals. yesterday my friends and I took the tour of Old Sac, which is the original downtown area of Sacramento and the buildings are like they were in the 1860's after the great flood. We had three walking tours, the history museum, the underground and the street level walking tour. It was very hot but our guide always stopped in the shade of the sycamore trees. The weather had been unseasonably cool until Wednesday but the sun came out and I was glad I took along my sun hat. Our bus to the tour was a "party bus" with colored lights around the ceiling and sofa type seats along each side. I bought a set of Piper silk colors today along with some organzine for a future project. The competition pieces are good this year but I can't post pictures of them even though the voting has probably finished by now. Janet has a lace clock in the display room and I have three pieces of Thomas Lester Beds in there including the giraffe which had not been worked before. An adaptation by Holly Van Sciver or a Lester lappet. I bought a book on Lester Lace, almost bought another by Ulrike Voelker but found I already had it when I checked my library app. Phew, saved myself a $60 mistake there. I am off to bed now after I clean the wine off my teeth. Janice Subject: RE: [lace] IOLI Convention Get together Oh, how I wish I could be there! One of our local lace makers is: Janet Theaker. [lace] IOLI Convention Arachne Get Together.
Is Lace really quiet these days? I haven't had a digest for over a week. I thought I would mention that I haven't given up on a get together for our Arachne group at the convention in Sacramento in August. I have been trying to arrange a meeting area for our group with the co-hosts. I suggest that we meet on Tuesday evening, say 6:30 pm. I don't think there are any events scheduled on Tuesday evening. Teachers Showcase will be Monday and the Tat-off is Wednesday. I can hopefully let you all know where we will meet before convention, but if not, listen for an announcement on Sunday or look for a message on the information board. We can have our usual impromptu free raffle. I have some prizes given to me already. I had about ten people email me about the cost of a meal in California and they all suggested meeting somewhere else. We could bring our own drink to the get together and maybe some snacks to pass around. Does that sound okay with everyone? Lace content - What classes are you all signed up for. I am having a break from Beds and doing Ipswich. I will be bringing my last three Thomas Lester pieces to the Display Room, which includes the Giraffe that had not been worked before. [lace] Poppy pattern
My website is back up and running and you can find the poppy pattern at http://www.jblace.com/jblace/pattern-gallery.html Weird thing, I did not receive Arachne Volume 61 digest, so I was wondering how the topic of footsides had started. I looked in the archives and saw the messages, but it would have been easier if the digests were listed in order rather than individual messages. I have been busy organising my first garage sale in 20 years of accumulated stuff. Today was cold and boring but I did make almost $300. Re: [lace] Thread raffle
Yes, I think it is the same silk. The canister says Bodil & Leif Christensen and the slip of paper inside says 3 ply unboiled nature silk no.250. It is very fine even for a 3 ply. Janice Janice Blair Crystal Lake, 50 miles northwest of Chicago, Illinois, USA www.jblace.com http://www.lacemakersofillinois.org From: Catherine I too bought some of this silk thread from Lia Baumeister a couple of decades ago (still have it) but have to confess that I haven't used it yet! [lace] Thread raffle
Nice surprise today, when I picked up the package of silk from the post office on my way home from work that Miriam Gidron raffled a while back. We had been away for about a week in Hilton Head so the mail was on hold. Not sure when it arrived in Crystal Lake, but when our mail was delivered yesterday, there was a card to go pick it up. It looks very fine and I will check the size against what I need for my Ipswich class this summer. It is an interesting way that it is packed into the canister. I have never seen that before. It looks like a film roll inside a canister for a camera. The thread pulls out from the metal roll. Thank you Miriam so much for doing the raffle. Smiling although it is raining cold drizzle outside and maybe snow tomorrow. I am so looking forward to moving to California. [lace] Translations of Lace Books
Anje wrote: I have a number of books in German and my German is non-existent so I looked the words up in other books that were already translated, or online, printed what I needed onto paper and added it to the book. It certainly helps to have the English chapter titles when trying to find what I am looking for. Most pattern books, as previously stated, have good technical diagrams so an experienced lacemaker should have no trouble following the directions. I appreciate it when an author has more than one language on the page. It does help, and it probably helps selling more of their books overseas. [lace] Black silk thread/Books
What a lovely surprise. Thank you Miriam. I wrote privately with my address. I am hoping I might be able to use the black silk for my convention class of Ipswich with Karen Thompson this August in Sacramento. I managed to get a new copy of The Laces of Ipswich by Marta Cotterell Raffel from Abe Books for about $8 including shipping. I got another copy for my friend who is also taking the class. These came from Powell's in Chicago so they didn't have far to come. At the same time I ordered a used hardback of Colour and Texture in Needlelace by Ros Hill for $5 with no shipping charges. How can they do it so inexpensively. [lace] Digitizing designs?
Hi Clay, I think I remember someone mentioned free machine embroidery designs for things like bobbins. Does anyone else know of free machine embroidery designs on our subject now that I have an embroidery machine? Sorry I can't help you with names in New England. Janice Does anyone in this list remember who the lacemakers are in the New England area who digitize designs for embroidery machines? I vaguely remember that Sally Barry was one of them, but have not been able to contact her. Any help refreshing my memory would be greatly appreciated!! Re: [lace] Stunned/IOLI Convention
I was unable to find the "tern" auction as it was over, but did see the heron one. I agree with Devon that the price could conceivably be for the frame rather than the lace which is beautiful and should be appreciated. When I used to make small lace items in frames for friends or local sales, I would add a label on the back which showed a lace pillow with the bobbins and add the words "Hand Made by" and my name. Friends that acquired them, treasure them and even have Christmas pictures on view all year round, but when my friends are no longer around, who knows what their ancestors will do with them. I had the pleasure of making them and seeing that they were appreciated. I like to think my family will keep my lace or at least put it on eBay at a price that is worth the work. Doubt that as far as my son is concerned. When I asked him to scan my Beds giraffe, he gave me the copies and said "here's your big lace thing"! I also saw the basket that Susan Hottle posted. What a lot of work! Gil Dye is teaching this summer in Sacramento at the IOLI convention, so if anyone wants to learn how to make 16th/17th Century lace, they should check out the IOLI website, Conventions, Classes, and click on the subject to see samples of the laces. http://www.internationalorganizationoflace.org Classes are filling. AP001 Lauran Sundin's wire lace class is full, as are P202 Bedfordshire, Jean Leader, P204 Milanese with Louise Colgan, and P208 Floral Bucks/Thomas Lester Beds with Holly Van Sciver. Spread the word around your lace guilds that if you wait to enroll, you might miss your favorite teacher. [lace] Pinterest
Sherry, I'm on Pinterest but I gather things only with the red Pin to repost on mine. Below each pin on a board you can write a comment, so I would go back to the offending page and make a comment that you are happy to see lace being spread around, but that they should say where the picture came from, and add your web address. My boards are simply there as a reminder to me for ideas and recipes with an easy way to re-find them when I need them. Usually they include the link back to the page I pinned them from and if they don't, I remove them as it is no good having just a photo and not the link for the recipe or pattern. Just pinned a neat idea to make a yarn swift using coat hangers. I have pinned a few lace ideas and it amazes me when I get emails telling me how many people around the world liked the idea.
