The book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell suggests that there is an advantage to 
being older vs. younger when it comes to success in school.  My personal 
experience and observation supports this in most cases as well.  
For example, my niece and nephew were summer babies who were held back a year.  
They are already 18 in their senior year of high school, high achieving, honor 
roll, lots of friendsvery successful by all counts.

My own daughter is an October baby.  she is the oldest in her class at 
pre-school.  Most of the kids are still 3, she is already 4. So far, no regrets 
on this decision (which was made for be based on the September cut date).

[MOSAIC] Kindergarten entrance Age

[Nancy Wittner]

Jim Grant used to have a tape of a speech on this topic.  It was called
The Gift of Time.  He made the case that moany students benefited from
delaying entrance to Kindergarten to let their bodies fine and gross motor
skills catch up with their intellectual abilities, especially with boys.

Our state, Texas and possibly Arizona, are refusing parents the option of 
students repeating kindergarten or starting late when parents feel their 
children aren't ready for first grade.  Are any other states having that 
problem?

Well, actually, it's probably your professional opinion, too.  The personal
is added into the professional, I'd guess.  It makes it so much more
significant, though, when there's a personal interest.  We'd probably be
better off in education if we looked at every educational practice through
the eyes of the families and the children.

I think the change in the kindergarten curriculum is too advanced,  in my 
humble opinion. Gone are the days of learning through play and rest/nap time 
after lunch.  Developmentally, I think it is too much.  We are requiring our 
children to become more academic too early and in my opinion that is not a 
benefit.  I specifically chose a kindergarten in a private school for my own 
children-- private school offered "centers" approach, public school has 
reading/math groups,  both programs were full day but the private school 
offered a rest time for children in the afternoon, and when I inquired about 
rest time in the public school I was advised that "we just don't do that here". 
 I fail to understand why it is so important for children to do test prep on 
the Kindergarten level.  Again, this is my own personal opinion.

Makes me so sad that now children have to fit into our schools as they are
currently structured instead of restructuring schools to fit children's
needs.  I still remember learning from the Brits and the Australians about
classrooms where children just entered classrooms on their birthdays
whatever time of year that happened to be.  Imagine that classrooms were so
flexible that a child entering in December or april would be no problem.
Teacher would just teach them from where they were developmentally.  But
there was also little pressure then from assessments and standards.  I miss
the old days!!!  Sorry, this is just a down memory lane moment.

In response to Katie's question about sight word retention in kindergarten:
?Not all children might be developmentally ready for sight word identification. 
However Patricia Cuningham's word wall approach could be effective.?The words 
are cut out in their configuration.? The teacher talks about the individual 
letters that make up the word and the kids bodily cheer/clap the words- raising 
arms up for tall letters and bending for letters that have tails. They 
are?displayed on?a word wall- that should have the alphabet and their 
names/pictures?displayed. Follow up would be? word hunts using "read around the 
room" or highlighters? and also a read ,make write sheet-sheet? divided into 
three columns- they read the word, use a stamper or letter tiles to make the 
word, and then in the last column they wite the word.?Rainbow write? magnetic 
letters can be used?to make words and play mix-it fix it. There are many 
companies that make simple blackline?sight vocabulary books that can reinforce 
their word knowledge.

All day K is mandatory now in Maryland. What it did for us was give us 
the  time to teach comprehension strategies through read alouds each 
and every day. I  was sold on the value of it when I walked into an 
all day K classroom  our first year (about three years ago) and having 
a student ask me "Do  you have much schema for turtles?"
Done right, there is a lot that we can do with comprehension in all 
day  K.

[MOSAIC] Kindergarten List Now Working

I've fixed the subscription problem with the kindergarten list that will be
moderated by Michele Polselli.

You can join the list at http://snipurl.com/kinderlist. Those of you that
successfully joined the list earlier are still active members. 

This list is open to all educators and Michelle will kick off the list in a
couple weeks with an opening message. Please do not send messages to the
list as they will not post until after Michelle's first message.

If you have a problem with the subscription process, please contact me
off-list at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[MOSAIC] Kindergarten List Problem

Please do not email the list or moderators with your problem on the
kindergarten list subscription page. I will let everyone know when the form
is fixed and working again. 

I'm looking into the problem, but may be until Tue before I can chase down
the problem. The form was working earlier as we have about 10 people in the
membership list. The list hasn't officially started so no one has missed any
messages.

So please understand we're working on the problem and look for a message
from me when the issue is fixed.

There's also Cunningham's Building Blocks, the kindergarten version of 4 
blocks.? It uses children's names for teaching letters, sounds and beginning 
conventions of print.

    I also teach kindergarten.  I have not used "Letter of the Week" in 
years!   We immerge our students in letters - focusing on the letters in their 
names initially.  Our K - 2 does use Wilson Fundations, but I do not do all the 
activities.  I pick & choose.  I also introduce upper & lower case together.  I 
typically begin guided reading groups in November with my kinders.  If I were 
you, I would certainly talk with the new principal to see if you could make 
some changes in your classroom.  You might want to look at Building Blocks by 
Dottie Hall & Pat Cunningham.

grade.  Will what I taught them stick? Will it make a difference.  I  
have a friend in first grade who is going to help me with that  
observation.  Baby steps I guess!

Dr. Jan Richardson's book will be out Spring 2009.  The title is The Next Step 
in Guided Reading: Teaching with Power and Purpose.  She has permission to sell 
the draft copy of the book.  The cost is $30.00.  You can email Jan if you are 
interested at [EMAIL PROTECTED] She is a reading specialist from Virginia.  She 
has been working with many schools around the country over the years.  The book 
includes planning sheets to help keep your reading lesson focused.  The book is 
very teacher friendly and clearly written.  The strategies in the book work for 
K-5.  The comprehension strategies could be used beyond that for instruction.  
Students we have who are reading above 5th grade are continuing to make 
progress at the higher levels.

 She has worked with my school for the past four years.  Since we began using 
her plan for guided reading our test scores are improving every year.  We moved 
from about 86% proficient or advances in 2005 to 95% proficient or advanced in 
2007.   This years scores are embargoed by the state until the fall so I can't 
publish them.  I can say that they have once again improved significantly.  The 
plan works for all kids.

Kendra,

You can do a great deal with comprehension strategies through read 
alouds. Of course, you wouldn't know that if you were in the 
Kindergarten classroom I was in last year, where the teacher didn't 
even know what a comprehension strategy was. But you are smarter and 
just from the questions you ask and the readings you've done I think 
you are going to like Kindergarten and do a great service there as 
well. :-)

Hey Kendra!
I am not Lori, but would love to share my thoughts and  experiences with you. 
 
 
1- I have been teaching Kindergarten for 27 years.  When  I started, I did 
Letter of the Week and loved it.  I had everything planned  around those 
letters.  Now that I look back, I wonder if the children  really "got" many of 
the 
activities I planned around the letter.  For  example, I knew we had honey on 
our biscuits during H week because honey begins  with H, but did they really 
get 
that?  With letter of the week, you don't  even finish introducing the letter 
until maybe March!  Children need to  know those letters and sounds much 
sooner so they can use them to read and  write.  
I have always used the good old Letter People to help teach  sounds and 
letters.  They give us all a common reference when we talk about  sounds and 
letters and when we use sounds and letters.  I introduce a  letter person a 
day, but 
talk about ALL of the letters and sounds,  especially in the children's 
names.  Our district bought each of us a  zoophonics kit for next year, so I 
will 
teach those charachter names and  characteristics (That is about all I plan to 
use out of that $550 kit.   They could have just given me a sheet with a list 
of the  characters!). 
 I don't think it matters what you use, even a set of ABC  cards will work, I 
just like having that common reference that we all (as a  class) know. With 
the whole district using Zoophonics, they will have the same  references if 
they move from school to school.  Zoophonics focusses on two  letters a week, 
but 
I plan to keep on doing it my way with focus on one a day,  but working with 
all letters and sounds.
 
2- Have high expectations for your  kindergarteners with literacy skills, but 
still give them plenty of time to  play.  You can enhance their literacy 
skills within the play centers by the  props and materials you put there.  I 
consider all of my learning centers  to be literacy centers, even "play" 
centers 
like pretend and blocks.   Remeber that "speaking" is part of literacy 
development and play is a great way  to enhance language development.
 
3-Yes! Yes! Yes!  Kindergarten children can and should  learn comprehensions 
strategies.  When they first begin reading, the  patterned texts don't have a 
lot of content, so you can't work there, but you  can work with the stories 
you read them.  Then by the time they get to the  stories with more content, 
the 
stratgies should come naturally.  I start  right in on comprehensions 
strategies, right along side concepts of print  and  the strategies to figure 
out 
words.  I plan to jump right in to  'background knowledge' and 'making 
connections' the first full week of  school.

to have a K/1 multi-age class due to  low numbers at my school.  I am excited, 
but a little bit nervous,  too.

I think K kids MUST learn the comprehension strategies...though for many of  
them, they learn them on a listening level. Really the strategies are  
thinking strategies and kids need to see models of what real readers do at this 
 
early level so they understand that reading is about making meaning. My lesson  
study team and I did comprehension lessons in K all year long last year.  They 
included metacognition, schema, inferring, questioning, visualizing.   Now I 
would say that inferring at a K level looks different than it does at a  third 
or fifth grade level but they can do it and sometimes it will amaze you  what 
the little people think of! We used a lot of ideas from the book Starting  With 
Comprehension---where kids acted out physically what they were thinking of.  
That is the way little ones learn...by doing.
I think Ellin Keene would agree that we need to teach all the aspects of  
reading in a balanced way from the very earliest moments...

K teachers in my school do not do letter of the week at all!  They also do not 
use fundations.  They are using reading and writing wokshop entirely and 
meeting children for guided reading in groups using Jan Richardson's approach 
to Guided Reading.  It is working great!  I teach 2nd grade and we are seeing a 
much higher percentage of students coming to first and second grade on graed 
level because of the great work they are doing in K.  I am also one of the 
reading coaches at my school.  Some of the teachers had a very hard time moving 
away from letter of the week. Once they saw the difference  and what their 
children were capable of doing they have not looked back.

 We piloted Making Meaning (Ctr. for Developmental Studies) in our 
kindergarten's last year - and it was wonderful.? It dovetailed so perfectly 
with our focus on language development and has built into it creating a focus 
on social interaction and discussion and building a literate community.? We 
didn't buy the 'extras' - just the manual and the lovely tradebooks.

Hello all...first off I want to thank you all!  I have been a "voyer"  
and fan of this listserv for a while.  You are all so knowledgeable  
and it is great to read about your experiences!  I am breaking my "no  
school work until July" rule because I am interested in your thoughts  
about something.  I spent the last school year teaching kindergarten  
for the first time.  What a trip!  I had been a first grade teacher  
for many years before and mistakingly thought "how hard can  
Kindergarten be?" I am sure that many kindergarten teachers are out  
there right now laughing at me. :)  I am currently reading The  
Literate Kindergarten by Susan Kempton and am loving it.  I am curious  
about your thoughts on how to start a reading and writing workshop in  
kindergarten.  Keeping in mind that we have a "literacy lab" pull out  
for an hour a day for my lowest readers and I have been SLOWLY trying

"Little Books" from Ohio State/Fountas & Pinell.  They
cost 25cents each, are bound in nice colored card
stock with titles in English and a few in Spanish. 
With families who do not speak English, the Spanish
titles would help (at least for many of your ESOL
students.)  They have leveled books through Level D,
as well as Mother Goose rhyme books.  

We used these books to bridge kindergarten students to
first grade by mailing each child a few books each
month.  We sent Spanish titles to children whose first
language was Spanish since we knew the parents were
more likely to interact with the students then.We
obtained money from a local grant and the total cost
was about $750 for a population of 125 students.  

One other source that you might want to look into is 3
part cards which are sometimes billed as moveable
books.  The first card has a picture and label, for
example a picture of a cat and under it the word "cat"
is written.  The second card is the same picture as
the first, minus the label.  The third is the label
"cat."  There are many "games" that can be done with
these cards to encourage literacy.  I have seen
children who cannot read figure out which label went
with which card.  I personally think they are
fantastic for developing visual beginning literacy
skills.

Speaking of books that make good baby books, the recent poetry book edited
by Jane Yolen, Here's A Little Poem: A Very First Book of Poetry is an
absolute keeper.  Most likely too expensive in hardcover for wide

I think rather than flash cards, I'd like to see a little laminated 
alphabet chart, to facilitate singing the ABC song. Also, I think this 
packet should include the following:

a box of 16 high-quality crayons
a 5x7 pad of blank white paper
a couple of already sharpened pencils
a small, laminated number line that goes to 20
and maybe a pattern blocks shape-tracing template

Just two days ago my principal and I had this very conversation. He  
would like to do home visits to these children and bring them a goodie  
bag. I think it's a great idea, but I warned him that I hoped it wasn't  
going to become a "drill your child on this" packet and he said that  
wasn't what he had in mind.

Hello;
Your idea of the welcome packet is FANTASTIC! 
Entering kindergarteners should "not" be reading sight words! They should be 
exploring their world and developing those emergent literacy skills (and 
numeracy skills) that will prepare them for the formal instruction they'll be 
recieving soon
For the packet, I suggest
...providing play do - along with ideas for what to do with the play do and the 
"WHY" (small motor, creativity)of it. Suggest the parent buy a cheap cookie 
sheet as a "play-do Board", so the child has a defined area in which to create 
(parents always worry about the "mess"!)
...what about a list of books to read over the summer, along with a pamphlet 
about Caldecott Award winners? This is easily obtained via your public library. 
In fact, you can make them a partner in this!
...Recipe ideas - simple things like the apple tarts you can make with canned 
biscuits and cinnamon sugar..and with that, provide a simple one page write up 
about taking your child with you to the grocery store, talking about the 
apples, comparing the different kinds of apples, weighing the apples - sharing 
how important it is to talk with you child, and the benefits of talking with 
them - in English or another language (just talk!)
also recipes for bubbles, puffy paint, chalk, etc! 
...provide a list of "free" things going on in the summer. The library usually 
has a story time, and local bookstores (B&N, BAM) usually do too. 
...Compile a list of websites (argh - last resort) that are kid friendly and 
are more than just "moving ditto sheets). Make sure to include a disclaimer on 
there about content and your district's liability.
...Could you put together a calendar for the summer, with something each day 
(or every other day) to do? (ie: June 15 - make chalk and then make a hopscotch 
board;  July 3: visit the library to find out about why we celebrate the Fourth 
of July) 
The calendar could also include things school specific ("Meet the teacher 
day"; "First day of school"
maybe a checklist for the first day of school countdown, and have it 
culminate with a party for all entering kindergarteners right before school 
starts? This could be a special "Meet the Teacher" day for kindergarten kids 
only
There is a great book called, "The Night Before Kindergarten" by 
E.J. Sullivan. YOu could read that book at the party!

I'm thinking perhaps we could get a free sample level A book from 
readinga-z.com (everything has to be very cheap to do it county-wide), and 
possibly some parent tips from readingrockets.com  I'm not sure about the sight 
words. What do you think? Should a pre-K student be studying sight words?  
We're a rural, high ESL population in general, with pockets of middle class 
families. Any ideas you have that can help, or if you've done something like 
this before, would be greatly appreciated!

[MOSAIC] Kindergarten preparation

Does anyone do a "Kindergarten Welcome Packet" type of thing for their entering 
Kindergarteners in the Spring? Our superintendent is thinking of starting this 
- sort of a "Welcome to K" packet of possibly a book and/or sight words and/or 
parent tips - that would be for the kids we've registered to begin K in the 
fall. We'd try to get it to them before summer starts.

Before I taught them the whole song, we grew plants and then put them outside 
into a real garden right outside the classroom door. They were able to use all 
the tools in the real garden.

earlier in the week about the source you're looking for).? 
One of our elementary schools piloted the materials "Making Meaning" which you 
can read about at the following website.? The teachers loved it - the kids 
loved it.? It supports strategy instruction as well as building 
community/environment that supports conversation.??

There is a book coming out this fall by Sue Hendricks.  This may not be the
book you are thinking of, but I would strongly recommend this as I have had
the opportunity to observe in her classroom and she is a gifted kindergarten
teacher.

Mandel Morrow 
Leslie has another book with Lea McGee called Teaching Literacy in  
Kindergarten which is a great overview of a balanced literacy program.

I am currently working in a kindergarten classroom and this has been a
struggle for me too.  One thing I do is: when we do our picture walk to help
us make predictions  we talk about questions we may have before we read, as
students share there questions I write them on our class reading log.  As we
read I may write down a question I may have and encourage students to share
theirs.  Once we are done we revisit our questions, determine if we can
answer them after we have read and write down our answers.  At this point if
there are any other questions students have they share them and see if
anyone can answer them.  It took a lot of modeling in the beginning,to what
are good questions but the kids really are catching on.  I also use this
same format for our small group work as this allows me to help the more
struggling students in a smaller setting.

[MOSAIC] Kindergarten Questioning

One of my mentees has a very difficult kindergarten class, one that would test 
the best and she is one of the best.  She has been 
struggling to involve her students in questioning and is about to go nuts.  I 
told her I would put out a kindergarten 'all call' on 
for ideas on how to teach questioning.
