If I upgrade to 7.0 and have problems, is there an easy way to get back to the (partially) working 6.1? I've heard various horror stories about upgrading and I don't want to lose all I've done. Re: [newbie] Security problem!!!!!
1. any out of the box installation of any OS is not secure. 2. Number of ports open, does not mean more or less security. I have 22, 21, 113, 80 open all the time, they are left open for a reason.. for access. If you only access your machine locally, then there is no reason to keep them open. anyway, please realize that, if u have a lot of ports open, or closed doesn't mean you're more open to hackers, or less. a hacker needs just one exploitable service(port) running, to wreak havoc, sometimes he doesn't even need a port, (I could send hidden code, to you in an email on your windows box, u open it in outlook.. and boom.. we have a little melissa clone). the security problem is the administrator.. /user. i've seen NT boxes that are rock solid(unhackable/crashable), and i've seen unix boxes that are unhackable/crackable. it's not the OS.. it's the user. - Original Message - From: "root" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, March 15, 2000 5:28 AM Subject: [newbie] Security problem! Real Player 7 problem - Re: [newbie] realplayer7
Does it work on EVERY real player video out there? Because I've installed RP7, and yet I still can't view quite a few Real Player videos. For some examples, at both http://www.sixflags.com/magicmountain/rides/goliath_ride.cfm and http://cnn.com/videoselect/ I can't view any of their movies. When I click on the links, it just says I need to download RealPlayer and takes me to the Netscape plugins page. But yet some links do work, like the one assciated with this story: http://www.cnn.com/2000/US/03/15/gas.prices/index.html When I installed RP7, I let it configure Netscape for me, and so I thought that would solve all my browser plugin problems (I had the same problem with Real Player G2 Alpha), but apparetnly it hasn't. So does anyone have a solution, or am I SOL? BTW, just to make sure someone doesn't rehash what I already did/know, in Netscape Preferences, I do have it set up so that "ra,ram" extensions, "audio/x-pn-realaudio" MIME type, are played by "/usr/local/RealPlayer7/realplay %u" (yes, it's "u" now) . And so it does work for some links, but not all. Thanks for pointing me to the new real player. I downloaded it and loaded in with no problem. It even automatically configured my netscape browser. "Michael D. Kirkpatrick" wrote: I have a 4 gig and a 27 gig hard drive on my web server. Everything is ran off of the 4 gig hard drive. The 27 gig hard drive is basically for storing daily backups (Up to 2 weeks worth). Is there a way to tell zip to treat all shortcuts (links) as only links, not as files and directories? Example, when I go to zip a directory that has multiple links it adds all the directories and files under the links as well. This makes for a rather large zip file since I can have 10-20 copies of directories and files because of all the links I have. I basically want to make mirror copy of a directory structure in a zip file. That way I can restore it in a directory on my 27 gig hard drive and move the necessary directories, sub directories, files, and links to the 4 gig hard drive (thus restoring what was messed up or lost). When I am done, I will have a zip file for each directory on the root level. That way I only would have to restore what I need. I need to be able to restore all the links as links, not as actual files and directories. If this is not possible with ZIP, could you possibly suggest a good free utility that I can use to accomplish this. I just want to use zip since I can also open the file on a windows based machine upon need and also for the space savings. Thanks in advance Mike Don't know about zip, but you can do this with tar and tell it to compress so you get a smaller archive (you hope) than the actual data. Something like: cd /27gig/week1backupdir tar --same-owner -czvpf week1.gz /whateverdir /anotherdir /etc Check out info tar. I don't remember if man tar has all the switches and what they do. I believe p is the switch you want, but check the docs.

To poweroff you need to type either "shutdown -h now" or "halt". The computer then shuts down, and in the case of an ATX board, powers down (if it's built into the kernel, but stock kernel should have it). Re: [newbie] RPM
That would not be an AMD 5x86 133 would it? I have one of those in another box. Here's the deal This is the fastest 486 chip (That I know of) that was ever made. Your system bus speed is 33mhz but the chip itself is running 133mhz. The name is a bit of "slight of hand" from AMD. It was put out when Pentiums were first coming out. To the uninformed it would look like 586 (Meaning Pentium). So if this is your chip, no you can't run mandrake. And no, you can't just "Stick a new chip in" either. To use Mandrake you will need a whole new system, (Or at least a new motherboard to go with the new processor). Don't throw this thing away though, it will make a great fileserver! I love my old 486 because: The one that I hand built and a Compaq Deskpro 2000 sitting side by side. Deskpro (Compaq's "Business Solution") = Pentium 200 64 meg ram 2.1gig Western Dig HD Homebrew = AMD 5x86 133 (A 486) 64 meg 1.08gig Both running Windows NT Server 4.0 with same services running, the 486 was faster in everything but drawing the opengl screensaver. Had I upgraded the graphics card it probably would have kicked butt there too. [newbie] problems with KDE that came with 7.0 (HELP! please)
HAs anyone else had problems with the KDE packages that came with 7? Its seems quite shitty in the stability aspect compared to the LDE in 6.0. I originally started using KDE 'cause gnome was instable back then... I never had a problem with KDE in 6.0 KFM can no longer go into .tgz's and display contents. It just has a bunch of folders that don't really exist. I really miss being able to read a text file inside a .tgz with only a few mouse clicks. Even the Archiver program sucks for this now too. It'l display the contents of the archive, but you can't read a file...it just gives an error saying the file doesn't exist. aKtion doesn't play all the same movies that the previous version. KPM doesn't display my swap. Kpackage doesn't prompt for the root passwd anymore when needed, but this is prob just a security thing and may be possible to set it up that way still. * REAL PROBLEM STARTS HERE! * I've also had serious problems with windows not being able to connect to the display. I don't think this is the server, 'cause I've tried 3 different ones! The bundled 3.3.6, the bundled 3.3.5 for 3dfx, and the slightly-newer 3.3.5 on the 3dfx website. I went back to 3.3.6 SVGA because the server on 3dfx's site was SVGA too... Left screen locked overnight, came back today to kpanel gone. Started kpanel in terminal and logged into internet. Tried to start netscape couldnt connect to display. Trying to open other windows told me KFM wasn't running. I decided to start keeping track of all this to help find the problem. Then upgraded it with the "6.5" disk and X is now a mess again. Incidentally, I had the exact same problem with a virtually identical Mandrake/Macmillan disk from a book "GNU C++ For Linux". What gives? Thanks in advance for your help. -- Tony Alfrey [EMAIL PROTECTED] "I'd rather be sailing" Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com.

I had the same problem with the 6326. You get graphics but blacked-out text. I'm sorry but I don't believe there has been a fix for this. Your next suggestion might be to see if the mouse is connected, but I've done that and it's connected. Though, it is connected through a switcher box so I can use the keyboard and mouse on both my NT box and my Linux box. It has worked well up until today, and I am not sure what I might have done to change things. :Running XF86Setup (as root) might help restore this file if you don't :want to do it manually. Maybe make a backup (cp XF86Config :XF86Config.backup) too before doing anything. How do I run XF86Setup? I typed XF86Setup to no avail. james "mouse@" is something called a symbolic link, its not actually the device but it points to it. Mine points to /dev/psaux 'cause its PS/2. if you "ls -laF /dev/mou*" it will show the device it actually points to. MAke sure that device is listed in /dev. Then make sure that device is what you're actually hooked up to. If its serial it will be something like ttyS0 or ttyS1 for com1/com2 respectively. I think the mandrake install programs usually setup XF86Config to the actual device and not the sym links...but I've never used 6.1 just 6.0 7 so I cant be sure. To double check the exact protocol, there is a list in the man page "man XF86Config" about a dozen pages into it. Make sure the spelling/capitalization is correct. Note that all these protocols might not show up in configuration tools. Did you _ever_ have a mouse in console mode? This could help narrow down the problem to X specific or the whole Linux box in general. XF86Setup should be in your path, but if not it is probably located in /usr/X11R6/bin. "locate XF86Setup |more" could help you find it. You could also use "xf86config", which is a text mode tool and less user friendly. Both have their strenghts, the latter is better for setting multiple resolutions and color depths. But for just changing mouse settings "vi /etc/XF86Config" would be my choice. I don't think that you would get this error if the mouse wasn't physically plugged in. You just wouldn't be able to move the pointer. You could have done something inadvertantly last time you were in X, and just didn't notice it until you tried to go back in. Take a good hard look at the /dev directory and your device line in XF86Config. It really won;t hurt to double check the protocol either. Let me know if you get it. NightStalker

Hi Ronald! Ignorance is ok, we all start somewhere :) If you are using a floppy to boot this please check which image you used. I think you need to change your boot disk image, sounds like you are attempting to do a network install. As for the numbers: NFS stands for Network File Server (Usually a Unix / Linux server) The numbers a normal disk based install would ask for are DNS (Domain Name Server) an IP Address for the box netmask (255.255.255.0) probably gateway (your router) ipconfig /all would give your these three but not an NFS number Ronald Brown wrote: Hello Group, I'm a newbie, so forgive my ignorance. Re: [newbie] Dual boot with Windows 2000
Almost true, What I would do if I had a clean disk is start the linux install just enough get a shell by doing alt F2 - F6 until I found a console that would allow me to type fdisk /dev/hda I would make a 16meg linux partition at the front of the disk. and then I would reboot and use Windoze fdisk to make my WinDOS partition as big as I wanted it (Fat32 doesn't care about the 1024 cylinder boundary) Set up windoze and then set up Linux. When it asked me where to put lilo I would then put it in /dev/hda1. NOT the Master Boot Record. You want to set the 16meg linux partition to mount at /boot. Re: [newbie] Quick Zip question
WINZIP can read tar files... and they make tar for windoze also... my $02 Audrey Beck wrote: "Michael D.
