OS2 boot manager will self-destruct if you have a windows partition over

I ran rpm -qa | grep samba, and I DID have samba, samba-common and
samba-client installed. So, figuring what the heck, I uninstalled and
reinstalled them. I STILL get the same problem. Thanks, though. I'm
wondering if the problem could be in my shutdown scripts...I didn't change
them at all, though.

I couldn't find anything about this on the samba homepage...I'm at a loss

anything.

Thanks!

I'm not sure, but I think that it was solved by installing some more samba
 packages.
Do you have samba, samba-common, and samba-client installed on your system?
(check with rpm -qa |grep samba). If not, insall all these ones.

Let me ask another question.. I've been wanting to upgrade to 7.0 (or the
very latest Mandrake) which might fix my current problem, but I have been
reluctant because I had a problem installing 7.0 from the start (before
installing 6.1). If I upgrade to 7.0 and have problems, is there an easy
way to get back to the (partially) working 6.1? I've heard various horror
stories about upgrading and I don't want to lose all I've done. Is it a
simple process, or will I have to save the important files and install 7.X
completely fresh?

Otherwise, I guess I'll just manipulate my system without Xwindows or keep
trying to figure out what is wrong.

Thanks for your help.

Got mine running, but with a few probs too. The soundcard worked out of
the box,
but broke down after a kernel recompile. In the kernel-source tree
(/usr/src/linux) I noticed a subdir called "emu10k1". Tried to recompile
that
 and reinstall, no go.

So I just downloaded a standard kernel from kernel.org, and compiled that
one
(read the kernel-HOWTO if that sounds like chinese to you), and then
compiled
and installed the creative labs driver I downloaded from the web. It now
works
 like a charm.

Broke automount though, since automount needs a patch applied to the
kernel, and
I never bothered to look for it on the net. I'm used to mount my stuff
manually
for more than a year with redhat, so automount is not really much of an
issue to
me. Perhaps more stuff is broken, but my system works without problems, so
 whatever...

[newbie] locate finds symlinks?

2000-03-15 Thread Lane Lester

Does "locate" find symbolic links?

The reason I ask is because I'm trying to install the blackdown jre so that
entering just "java" will start it. I deleted all the kaffe stuff and every
instance of "java" that I could find. I put the new jre on the path. But
when I enter "java" I get:
[root@wsrc206 bin]# java
bash: /usr/bin/java: No such file or directory

..which tells me that somewhere there's a symlink pointing to
/usr/bin/java. No?

But a "locate" after a fresh "updatedb" does not turn up any instances of
"java" other than directory names and the new "java" of the blackdown
distribution.

Entering the full path of the new java works fine.

This operation should be done when the VERY FIRST printing begins to show
on the screen. This is the BIOS setting up of your system. DO NOT WAIT
FOR ANY 'Windows' operations like 'Starting Windows 95' or 'Installing
Windows 98' or even any other 'Windows' operations. If you have American
Mega Trends BIOS or what ever it is this is when you need to press the
'F2', 'DEL', 'Insert' or any other keys that may require your input.
Different BOIS' require different uses of keys, check your books on your
system to see what is needed for your access to the BIOS setup.

Re: [newbie] Security problem!!!!!

2000-03-15 Thread Vidyut Luther

1. any out of the box installation of any OS is not secure.
2. Number of ports open, does not mean more or less security.
I have 22, 21, 113, 80 open all the time, they are left open for a
reason.. for access. If you only access your machine locally, then there is
no reason to keep them open.

anyway, please realize that, if u have a lot of ports open, or closed
doesn't mean you're more open to hackers, or less. a hacker needs just one
exploitable service(port) running, to wreak havoc, sometimes he doesn't even
need a port, (I could send hidden code, to you in an email on your windows
box, u open it in outlook.. and boom.. we have a little melissa clone).

the security problem is the administrator.. /user. i've seen NT boxes that
are rock solid(unhackable/crashable), and i've seen unix boxes that are
unhackable/crackable. it's not the OS.. it's the user.

I keep getting the message "/usr/bin/make_smbcodepage: error in loading

I have tried installing readline-4.0-6mdk.i586.rpm and running ldconfig to
correct the problem, but it has not worked.

I have searched for help on this and have not found it, but I have found
another person who had the same problem with Mandrake 6.1 (except he built

reverted to 6.0.5a and has no problems again. This seems to be a Mandrake

Any suggestions very greatfully received!

[newbie] SB PCI 128 Sound Card

2000-03-15 Thread Bob

I can't get this card to work in MD 7.0. According to the "howto's" this
card is supposed to be supported. Using Lothar the card is identified as Ensoniq
ES1371. All of the settings use -1 and don't offer any other
settings. Testing the card in Lothar locks up the computer. Trying to use
other cards settings just says that the device or resource is busy. During boot
I can see where it loads the sound module. What do I need to do? Any help
appreciated.

I am trying to install Linux Mandrake 7.0 using a SCSI CD-ROM drive with
an

have the installer recognize my SCSI card. I realize that such ISA Plug

As for gcc - you just need to install the gcc rpms from the mandrake disk.

do an ls gcc* in the /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS dir and you should find them

Ron,

When asked for your IP address during install linux wants the address to
be give to that machine not those of your ISP's. There are a set of IP
addresses that can be assigned for a private network however I don't

Real Player 7 problem - Re: [newbie] realplayer7

2000-03-15 Thread Anthony Huereca

Does it work on EVERY real player video out there? Because I've installed RP7,
and yet I still can't view quite a few Real Player videos. For
some examples, at both
http://www.sixflags.com/magicmountain/rides/goliath_ride.cfm and
http://cnn.com/videoselect/ I can't view any of their movies. When I click on
the links, it just says I need to download RealPlayer and takes me to the
Netscape plugins page. But yet some links do work, like the one assciated with
this story: http://www.cnn.com/2000/US/03/15/gas.prices/index.html When I
installed RP7, I let it configure Netscape for me, and so I thought that would
solve all my browser plugin problems (I had the same problem with Real Player
G2 Alpha), but apparetnly it hasn't. So does anyone have a solution, or am I
SOL?

BTW, just to make sure someone doesn't rehash what I already did/know, in
Netscape Preferences, I do have it set up so that "ra,ram" extensions,
"audio/x-pn-realaudio" MIME type, are played by "/usr/local/RealPlayer7/realplay
%u" (yes, it's "u" now) . And so it does work for some links, but not all.

Thanks for pointing me to the new real player. I downloaded it and loaded in
with no problem. It even automatically configured my netscape browser. Great.

Why do you need to recompile / install the driver?
undert /lib/modules/2.2.14-15mdk/net be a all the compiled NIC drivers

just try insmod /lib/modules/2.2.14-15mdk/net/3c59x.o

[newbie] Caution: Macmillan/Mandrake

2000-03-15 Thread Tony Alfrey

I posted the following message on the list several days ago and also sent same
to Linuxcare (the support service for the Macmillan Software version of
Mandrake). I've gotten no response from Linuxcare except the message-received
acknowledgement. In the meantime, I've installed RedHat 5.2, RedHat 6.1,
Turbolinux 6.0 and various Caldera distros on the same partition with no
problem. I would have tried a commercial version of Mandrake if I could find
one in the stores. I would recommend caution to those considering buying the
Macmillan Software versions of Mandrake. In my opinion, the Macmillan distro
is bad advertising for the full-blown Mandrake package!

Prior posting/message to Linuxcare follows:

 Description:
 System:
Pentium II, 400 MHz, 256 MB on Intel 440 BX motherboard, two scsi 9
 GB drives
Dual-boot Win98 and three other ext2 partitions, using Boot Magic
Video chip = Cirrus Logic 5480 PCI on motherboard, 2 MB RAM
scsi controller = ncr53C875 on motherboard

Currently running Caldera 2.3/KDE 1.1.2 on second drive.

 Problem:
Purchased "Deluxe Linux O/S 6.5" (from Fry's Elec.). Installation
goes fine, linux runs well in run level 3. X appears broken. For example, the
Mandrake login graphic window, each component of which is assembled from
different layers, has portions cut up and shifted. Color block background for
one window may be offset to the side, frame for a text window may be shifted
down, text for two buttons may be overlapped, text for one window may be
covered by the shifted color background from another button. Of course, since
kde is built on X, it is an even bigger mess. For example, drag a window and it
leaves a trail of pieces of itself behind.
This is not an XF86Setup problem. Monitor/video card is working fine (16 bpp,
1024x768), I know my sync rates!! As a sanity check, I installed
Red Hat 5.2 from an old VA Research disk circa very early 1999 which has
virtually the same install package and it installs with no problem. Then
upgraded it with the "6.5" disk and X is now a mess again.
Incidentally, I had the exact same problem with a virtually
identical Mandrake/Macmillan disk from a book "GNU C++ For Linux".
 What gives?

Thanks in advance for your help.

storing daily backups (Up to 2 weeks worth).

Is there a way to tell zip to treat all shortcuts (links) as only links,
 not as files and directories?

Example, when I go to zip a directory that has multiple links it adds
all the directories and files under the links as well. This makes for a
rather large zip file since I can have 10-20 copies of directories and
files because of all the links I have. I basically want to make mirror
copy of a directory structure in a zip file. That way I can restore it
in a directory on my 27 gig hard drive and move the necessary
directories, sub directories, files, and links to the 4 gig hard drive
(thus restoring what was messed up or lost).

When I am done, I will have a zip file for each directory on the root
level. That way I only would have to restore what I need. I need to be
able to restore all the links as links, not as actual files and
 directories.

If this is not possible with ZIP, could you possibly suggest a good free
utility that I can use to accomplish this. I just want to use zip since
I can also open the file on a windows based machine upon need and also
 for the space savings.

 Thanks in advance
 Mike

Don't know about zip, but you can do this with tar and tell it to
compress so you get a smaller archive (you hope) than the actual data.

Something like:

cd /27gig/week1backupdir
tar --same-owner -czvpf week1.gz /whateverdir /anotherdir /etc

Check out info tar. I don't remember if man tar has all the switches
and what they do. I believe p is the switch you want, but check the
docs.

Re: [newbie] Shutdown Poweroff

To poweroff you need to type either "shutdown -h now" or "halt". The computer
then shuts down, and in the case of an ATX board, powers down (if it's built
into the kernel, but stock kernel should have it). In the case of an AT board,
you get the message that tells you to power off the computer, comparable to the
"It is safe now to turn off your computer message" you get after a windows
shutdown.

Yes, there is such a beast, but no I dont know what its called or where
to find it :( Try freshmeat.net maybe there. I know you can read newer
mac disks in a pc drive but OLD (very old) 400k disk and maybe 800k
disks wont work no matter what 'cause they are completely different!
You'd need to nigger-rig an old mac drive up to the pc somehow and write
 a program for that.

Re: [newbie] RPM

2000-03-15 Thread Jon Hunter

That would not be an AMD 5x86 133 would it?

I have one of those in another box. Here's the deal

This is the fastest 486 chip (That I know of) that was ever made.

Your system bus speed is 33mhz but the chip itself is running 133mhz.

The name is a bit of "slight of hand" from AMD. It was put out when Pentiums
were first coming out. To the uninformed it would look like 586 (Meaning
Pentium). So if this is your chip, no you can't run mandrake. And no, you
can't just "Stick a new chip in" either. To use Mandrake you will need a
whole new system, (Or at least a new motherboard to go with the new
processor). Don't throw this thing away though, it will make a great
fileserver!

I love my old 486 because:

The one that I hand built and a Compaq Deskpro 2000 sitting side by side.

Deskpro (Compaq's "Business Solution") =

Pentium 200
64 meg ram
2.1gig Western Dig HD

Homebrew =
AMD 5x86 133 (A 486)
64 meg
1.08gig

Both running Windows NT Server 4.0 with same services running, the 486 was
faster in everything but drawing the opengl screensaver.

Had I upgraded the graphics card it probably would have kicked butt there too.

[newbie] problems with KDE that came with 7.0 (HELP! please)

2000-03-15 Thread Jeremy

HAs anyone else had problems with the KDE packages that came with 7?

Its seems quite shitty in the stability aspect compared to the LDE in
6.0. I originally started using KDE 'cause gnome was instable back
then... I never had a problem with KDE in 6.0

KFM can no longer go into .tgz's and display contents. It just has a
bunch of folders that don't really exist. I really miss being able to
read a text file inside a .tgz with only a few mouse clicks. Even the
Archiver program sucks for this now too. It'l display the contents of
the archive, but you can't read a file...it just gives an error saying
the file doesn't exist.

aKtion doesn't play all the same movies that the previous version. KPM
doesn't display my swap. Kpackage doesn't prompt for the root passwd
anymore when needed, but this is prob just a security thing and may be
possible to set it up that way still.

* REAL PROBLEM STARTS HERE! *

I've also had serious problems with windows not being able to connect to
the display. I don't think this is the server, 'cause I've tried 3
different ones! The bundled 3.3.6, the bundled 3.3.5 for 3dfx, and the
slightly-newer 3.3.5 on the 3dfx website. I went back to 3.3.6 SVGA
because the server on 3dfx's site was SVGA too...

Left screen locked overnight, came back today to kpanel gone. Started
kpanel in terminal and logged into internet. Tried to start netscape
couldnt connect to display. Trying to open other windows told me KFM
wasn't running. I decided to start keeping track of all this to help
find the problem. I tried starting it at the prompt, as you can see
here:

ERROR: KFM is not running

I had to restart xwindows. I shouldn't be having to do this.

I've had this probelm a few times now, usually when trying to open
netscape. But not always is it netscape that screws everything up. I
hate having to restart x.

WTF is going on here? Is this a KDE thing or what? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP
BECAUSE THIS REALLY SUCKS

~Jeremy

One last gripe:

Why the @#$%$ is the .kderc created by default w/ root ownership in the
user's home directory AND NO WRITE ACCESS FOR THAT RESPECTIVE USER?!?!
Now, I can see that if it were the system-wide one, but come on! It
took a while to figure out why I couldn't change my @#$%@#$% colors!
That was pure stupidity on someone at Mandrake's part...

acknowledgement. In the meantime, I've installed RedHat 5.2, RedHat 6.1,
Turbolinux 6.0 and various Caldera distros on the same partition with no
problem. I would have tried a commercial version of Mandrake if I could
find
one in the stores. I would recommend caution to those considering buying
the
Macmillan Software versions of Mandrake. In my opinion, the Macmillan
distro
is bad advertising for the full-blown Mandrake package!

 Prior posting/message to Linuxcare follows:

  Description:
  System:
Pentium II, 400 MHz, 256 MB on Intel 440 BX motherboard, two scsi 9
  GB drives
Dual-boot Win98 and three other ext2 partitions, using Boot Magic
Video chip = Cirrus Logic 5480 PCI on motherboard, 2 MB RAM
scsi controller = ncr53C875 on motherboard

Currently running Caldera 2.3/KDE 1.1.2 on second drive.

  Problem:
Purchased "Deluxe Linux O/S 6.5" (from Fry's Elec.). Installation
goes fine, linux runs well in run level 3. X appears broken. For
example, the
Mandrake login graphic window, each component of which is assembled from
different layers, has portions cut up and shifted. Color block background
for
one window may be offset to the side, frame for a text window may be
shifted
down, text for two buttons may be overlapped, text for one window may be
covered by the shifted color background from another button. Of course,
since
kde is built on X, it is an even bigger mess. For example, drag a window
and it
leaves a trail of pieces of itself behind.
This is not an XF86Setup problem. Monitor/video card is working fine (16
bpp,
1024x768), I know my sync rates!!

I think I *finally* figured this out. Here's my hypothesis:

Note my 2 different prompts with different machine names... the first
was from a konsole window and the 2nd was from the virtual console. I
had my machine name automatically change when I log onto the 'net (via
kppp). I log onto the net from a x session I start from "localhost",
but then the name changes to "fdialup185". When I then try to open a
window my x server (presumably) sees the request is coming from
something other than localhost and basically says "get the hell out of
here, you can't use that!" I then quit X, and restart it as fdialup85.
It then expects requests from fdialup85 and subsequent requests to open
a window are granted.

The thing is that I don't know (can't remember) if it always failed on
me right away or all the time I guess time will only tell if this
fixes it. I'm interested in hearing any thoughts from anyone in the
meantime, like whether I am making any sense here or am just overtired.
;-) Does anyone else have their machine name change?

This still doesn't explain why kpanel died, or other little things in
kde like the viewing of archives... any ideas there?

Man, it's midnight already, I need to get up early, and I still haven't
ironed clothes for tommorrow.

Re: [newbie] How can I read Macintosh disks?

2000-03-15 Thread Jon Hunter

It is built into the system(I believe). Although I have not
done this, if I was gonna try this I would as root:

insmod hfs
mount -t hfs /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

Try it, can't hurt.

A little more info please.

Who made your computer?

If it was done by a shop or a friend it might have been jumpered wrong.
Windoze just askes the chip"Hey what kinda chip are you?" Linux actually
measures it's speed...

Grab your motherboard book and open the case to check jumpers. Be VERY
careful if you change something...

Triple check it and maybe have a friend check it too... It is way too easy
to burn out a cpu!

When I do an "ls mou*" I get "mouse@" but I have no mouse in console mode.
Your next suggestion might be to see if the mouse is connected, but I've
done that and it's connected. Though, it is connected through a switcher
box so I can use the keyboard and mouse on both my NT box and my Linux
box. It has worked well up until today, and I am not sure what I might

  james

"mouse@" is something called a symbolic link, its not actually the
device but it points to it. Mine points to /dev/psaux 'cause its PS/2.
if you "ls -laF /dev/mou*" it will show the device it actually points
to. MAke sure that device is listed in /dev. Then make sure that device
is what you're actually hooked up to. If its serial it will be
something like ttyS0 or ttyS1 for com1/com2 respectively. I think the
mandrake install programs usually setup XF86Config to the actual device
and not the sym links...but I've never used 6.1 just 6.0 7 so I cant
 be sure.

To double check the exact protocol, there is a list in the man page "man
XF86Config" about a dozen pages into it. Make sure the
spelling/capitalization is correct. Note that all these protocols might
not show up in configuration tools.

Did you _ever_ have a mouse in console mode? This could help narrow
down the problem to X specific or the whole Linux box in general.

XF86Setup should be in your path, but if not it is probably located in
 /usr/X11R6/bin. "locate XF86Setup |more"
could help you find it. You could also use "xf86config", which is a
text mode tool and less user friendly. Both have their strenghts, the
latter is better for setting multiple resolutions and color depths. But
for just changing mouse settings "vi /etc/XF86Config" would be my
 choice.

I don't think that you would get this error if the mouse wasn't
physically plugged in. You just wouldn't be able to move the pointer.
You could have done something inadvertantly last time you were in X, and
just didn't notice it until you tried to go back in. Take a good hard
look at the /dev directory and your device line in XF86Config. It
really won;t hurt to double check the protocol either. Let me know if
 you get it.

Re: [newbie] Help Please

2000-03-15 Thread Jon Hunter

Hi Ronald!

Ignorance is ok, we all start somewhere :)

If you are using a floppy to boot this please check which
image you used.
I think you need to change your boot disk image, sounds like
you are attempting to do a network install. As for the
numbers:

NFS stands for Network File Server (Usually a Unix / Linux
server)

The numbers a normal disk based install would ask for are

DNS (Domain Name Server)
an IP Address for the box
netmask (255.255.255.0) probably
gateway (your router)

ipconfig /all would give your these three but not an NFS
number

Re: [newbie] Dual boot with Windows 2000

2000-03-15 Thread Jon Hunter

Almost true, What I would do if I had a clean disk is start the linux install
just enough get a shell by doing alt F2 - F6 until I found a console that would
allow me to type

fdisk /dev/hda

I would make a 16meg linux partition at the front of the disk. and then I would
reboot and use Windoze fdisk to make my WinDOS partition as big as I wanted it
(Fat32 doesn't care about the 1024 cylinder boundary) Set up windoze and then
set up Linux. When it asked me where to put lilo I would then put it in
/dev/hda1.
NOT the Master Boot Record. You want to set the 16meg linux partition to mount
at /boot.

I say almost true because lilo wants to be within that first 1024 cylinders.

I agree with your diagnoses doctor ;

kppp has a place in setup where it ask if it should get it's domain name from
DHCP. Uncheck the box and it will probably fix this problem.

storing daily backups (Up to 2 weeks worth).

I believe p is the switch you want, but check the
 docs.

 Ron,

When asked for your IP address during install linux wants the address to
be give to that machine not those of your ISP's. There are a set of IP
addresses that can be assigned for a private network however I don't
recall what they are off the top of my head. You should be able to
search the 'net for them though.

192.168.0 though 254.1 through254
255.255.255.0

my box is 192.168.0.1

also open is

10.0 though 254.0 though 254.1 though 254

There are others but I think the first is enough...

If you are on a private network with a M$ win98se or W2k box with "Internet
Connection Sharing" turned on then you can't be on 192.168.0.1 but you have
252 other addresses in that range.
