WhoaI am really feeling dumb now. The Win98 HD is the master so I would
need to set Linux as hdB in lilo. I switched them around. Shoot me.

A special edition Partition Magic(a stripped down version) comes with
Linux Mandrake Complete 7.0.
If you have Complete while running Windows put CD 3 in your CD-ROM,
explore, open the Pq folder, open the PtMagic folder and double click Set Up
. This will install Partition Magic.

If that is unsuccessful then you need to run the program

Sorry, I can't help, but I was sure happy to see you have this problem,

On *nix OSes, the 'Copy' is actually middle click. You just highlight
what you want to copy, and middle click where you want to paste it.

That's it .. The highlighted text is automatically 'copied' when you

If I could make a suggestion:

Make sure you don't do this with root, because if you do, the potential
exists to cause damage to your system.

Say someone uploads a command "ls" into the FTP directory. You go to the
FTP directory and type "ls," and the new "ls" command is executed instead of
the Linux standard one. Now, let's say that the new "ls" is a shell script
that does "rm -rf /*" ...

If you must put . into your path, put it _after_ the other entries in your
path, not before, so that the existing command is called before the one in
the current directory.

Just a thought, from an admitted newbie.

Greetings,
Adrian

Re: [newbie] Administration Question

2000-06-03 Thread flupke

Hi Bascule,

I didn't really meant that a group can own a file (even if the man chgrp
says : chgrp - change group ownership). Sorry if I didn't express
myself correctly. I just meant that there are permissions to a file that
are specific to a particular group.

I might be wrong, but I don't think it's possible to make a group member
of another group.
And I also think that this term "ownership" could be misleading. I
rather think about a file as being a member of a group.

Sorry again if I wasn't clear enough.

If you want a certain thing to load, put that in ~/.Xclients

Gnome: exec gnome-session
KDE:exec startkde

Etc. See the original .Xclients for the right syntax per system. I made a
backup of that, and now all it has in it is:

#!/bin/sh

kfm &
exec blackbox

#exec startkde
#exec gnome-session

(The latter two make it easy to switch, just have to meddle with #'s)

if that doesn't take you into a GUI then as root type:

Re: [newbie] PCMCIA CARD

2000-06-03 Thread Pete Clapham

Hi, all --

I think it was my posting that started this, so I would like to follow up. I found
Mandrake 7.0 and installed it on the laptop in
question (the original question, that is). I told it to install PCMCIA. I hadn't
done this at first when I loaded 6.1, and when the
startup script reported that it was starting PCMCIA it evidently wasn't. I find now
that I can ping other machines in our LAN
using my Linksys PCMCIA card, and I get some evidence that it is at least trying to
telnet. I still have a lot to learn about
using Linux as a networking operating system, but at least the problem I was having in
the beginning appears to be solved.
The machine sees the Linksys card, and it works at least at a very low level.

(Now, what do I have to do in order to be able to Telnet from one machine to the other
-- and where is the documentation on
SAMBA?)

Anyhow, the problem -- at least for laptops -- seems to be PCMCIA installation, not
Linksys

Re: [newbie] Imation Super Disk Drive - Parallel Port

2000-06-03 Thread poogle

You don't need any drivers.
If you are using KDE as your desktop start by creating a new KDELNK with
entries as follows in the Device section /dev/"whatever yours is" (mine is hdd
so this entry looks like /dev/hdd) and in the mount point you need
/mnt/"whatever yours is" - mine is /mnt/LS.
You need to create a new mount point (mkdir /mnt/LS - or whatever you choose to
call your mount point)
Now edit your /etc/fstab and add a line as follows:-
/dev/hdd /mnt/LS ext2 rw,user,noauto 0 0
this will allow you to access ext2 formatted LS 120 discs. if you want to mount
dos formatted floppies add another line to /etc/fstab but substititute ext2 for
msdos.
You will then be able to click on the desktop icon to mount your LS 120 - I
have not tried using automount so I don't know if it works or not, I'm happy to
use umount when I've finished with it as I don't use it very often.
Don't forget in both KDELNK and when editing your /etc/fstab to subsitute your
own device names and mount points.
If you have any problems with it I'll be glad to try to help.

[newbie] Upgrade 6->7 problem

Hi, all --

I am trying to upgrade my Pentium machine from Mandrake 6.1 (Helios) to 7.0 (Air). It
gets into the second stage of install and
dies, suggesting that it can't connect with the video card. I had no trouble

The video card in question is a Matrox Millenium with 4 mb of video memory. Can
anybody tell me what is wrong?

Re: [newbie] Oh say can you C??

2000-06-03 Thread Pete Clapham

Hi -- My two cents worth

C is C (for the most part, except when you get to C++). The biggest difference
between C distributions is the programming
environment. In the NT world, Borland C++ and Microsoft C++ (for example) both work,
but you set up the "++" part of the
programs differently. And the programming environment is an important part of C++
programming.

If you want to learn (relearn) C, try the book by Stephan Kochan. It's green, with a
diamond on the cover.

[newbie] Crystal 4281 Sound Card

Hi, all --

I have a Toshiba Satellite 1625 Laptop computer running Linux 7.0 (Air). The
specifications for the computer state that it contains
a "Crystal 4281 PCI Audio accelerator and 4279A Codec software wave table, supporting
18-bit stereo, Windows Sound System
and SoundBlaster Pro-compatible sound support; built-in stereo speakers, headphone and
microphone jacks."

When I run DrakConf on this machine, it looks for devices and finds no sound card.
When I run "sndconfig", it finds a Cirrus
LogicA|Unknown device 1013:6005. When I do a "cat /proc/pci", I find that device 8 on
bus 0 is a Cirrus Logic Unknown Device
(Rev 1), with some other data.

I have two questions. First, do I want to set up this sound card as a SoundBlaster
Pro or as a Crystal 4281? Secondly, How do I
do it?

Thanks for your help.

C stay's C, in dos as in linux.
The only diff. is the compiler = GNU
(gcc, egcs).With the 'make' and
'makefile'
+/- as a *.bat file in dos for easy
compiling.
Get a good book like 'Programming
Linux', here you'll find the necessary
basics to programming the shell, tc/tcl,
perl, C, etc..
Get a good friendly, Xdebugger like
'PFix86Plus' for dos
and an editer you like. Test severals
before continuing with one.

[newbie] What is BogoMIPS?

2000-06-03 Thread Nickolay Belostotsky

Hello all!

What is BogoMIPS? What does the number depend upon?

The reason of my interest is this:

With a standart kernel (2.2.14-15mdk) my PentiumIII-500 (Katmai) (or
whatever is measured with BogoMIPS) receives rating of 499 point something.
When I installed the 2.3.99-pre9 kernel, the number leapfrogged to 999 point
something. What's the meaning of that?

[newbie] Video Card Error

2000-06-03 Thread Adrian Skywalker

Hello everyone,

I installed Mandrake 7.0 about a week ago, and since then I've been having
trouble with my X configuration. Specifically, I can't get it to accept the
correct resolution.

I am running a 233 MHz Intel clone with OpenGL and MMX support, with 48 megs
of RAM. My video card is an Alliance ProMotion 6422 and my monitor is an
IBM 6540 G42, both as recognized by my Windoze software. (Unfortunately, as
I purchased this computer secondhand, I do not have the specific
documentation.) Both the video card and the monitor appear in the lists
provided by the Mandrake installer. My Windows configuration is 800x600,
with high-color (16 bit).

The trouble is, when I feed this information to the installer, the screen
flickers a few times, and comes back with the error message "Hung in
ApmSync(), try changing some parameters." This happens no matter what
resolution I try to use. I tried some other video cards, just for the fun
of it, and if they worked with my card at all, they came up with the same
"Hung in ApmSync()" error.

The only way I could get X to run was using the VGA16 server by selecting
the "Unknown VGA compatible" video card. My card _should_ be using the SVGA
server (which is what Mandrake selected for it), but when I try to use it I
get the above error message.

If there is anyone that can help me on this one, or at least explain what is
happening, I would very much appreciate it.

Greetings,
Adrian

now it recognises all the RAM

Re: [newbie] Setting lilo to dual boot 98 from seperate drive???

2000-06-03 Thread Charles A Edwards

Windows does not have to be on the primaey master to boot it just has to
think it is.
The first thing you need to do is to verify that Win will boot . To do
this change the setting in your BIOS so that it boots first from hd1 instead
of hb0 (some list them as C and D). If Win boots all you need do is use
liloconfig to add Wins boot record. If Win will not boot then either the
boot record has been damaged or the partition type is not set as
primary, active ,bootable; this could have happened if you used DriveImage or
a like program to copy Win to your 2nd hd.

Hi Paul,

You probably told the installer to check the video modes. I have heard
(and once also experienced) that sometimes probing the video card for X is
not a good idea all of the time. Depends on your hardware a lot, so I
can't tell when you should and when you should not.

If you have logged in, you can start X with

startx

If you can't get anywhere further than the grey screen and the x's, press
ctrl-alt-backspace to kill the x-server. From there you need to log in as
root and run Xconfigurator to redo/finish the X setup. Do -not- let the
system probe the video card at the point it asks to. Finished
succesfully? Then you can log in as you again (or me, which is the
same) and startx should get you going then.

If you can post the type of videocard you have, perhaps some people can
already tell what pitfalls you have to be aware of if there are any.

If things go well installing X, and you want to have the graphic login,
you need to log in as root again, and change the file /etc/inittab,
changing the initdefault from 3 (text login) to 5 (graphical login).

Good luck

Hi Olly and all,
I think I have figured part of this out now. PoPy... well, the Py stands
for Python, a programming language. Zope must be some kind of program. And
ZPoPyDA (DA - Database Adapter) is some kind of plugin for the Zope
program to make it possible to access a postgresql (probably some form of
SQL). And ZPoPyDA is thus written in Python.
This is worrying! I think I understand this!

But then, things on a command line can look scary too. Ever seen a
commandline for AWK?

This morning I used something 'simple' that is really powerful. I had to
copy 5 files to a separate directory. So, big deal. Since I am a keyboard
junkie I don't mouse things around, and to run MC for that... nah...
The 5 files were in a set from "image001" through "image015". I needed to
copy #5 through 9. This is where the unix magic happens:

cp image00[56789].jpg

This copied exactly what I wanted. Try that in plain Dos. (No cheating, so
no 4DOS, NDOS etc!!)

There is a very simple option to avoid typing all that, and still come up
with the right filename.
Type part of the name, e.g. usr/src/RPM/BUILD/I810 and then press the TAB
key. This invokes the autocompletion function of unix. If there is only 1
file that fits the name, the complete name will be finished for
you. Otherwise the candidates for the name will be shown and you can add a
few more letters to the name and hit TAB again.
Get used to it, and you'll love it :)

[newbie] X Windows won't start

2000-06-03 Thread Vyking

Hello,

System:
Celeron 433
128 Mb Ram
3dfx Voodoo 3 3500 video card AGP (16Mb)

When configuring X Windows during installation, the test screen displays
successfully.

On bootup, I login with no problems (X Windows not configured to boot
automatically). When I type startx, the problems begin.

I get a blue screen with the mouse pointer as a black X. I have a small
window top left with the command prompt, as well as another window with the
command prompt that is a little larger on the bottom right. Both prompts
are active when the mouse pointer is hovered over that window. This goes no
further. There are no error messages.

I have set X Windows to automatically boot but get something slightly
different. The screen is blue with a small window saying login and
password. This is not the normal KDE login, but more a text based window.

When at the prompts (after trying startx), I have tried typing startx
again. I get a message stating that the server is already running.

When hitting Ctrl Alt F12 I do notice the following messages
"The directory /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi does not exist
Entry deleted from font path
The directory /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi does not exist
Entry deleted from font path"

I'm not sure if this would cause the symptoms I have, but thought I'd put it
in anyway.

I would appreciate it if someone could find the time to help me out.

Thanks,
Brett

[newbie] Extending D Partition and allowing more space for Linux

2000-06-03 Thread Roman Bysh

Hi everybody,

I have installed Linux to my D partition. The size is about 2047 MB.
Linux Mandrake installation uses 2044 MB. However, I have another 14
Gig. of unused space using NTFS (factory installed). I have manually set
the following setting during installation:

/boot   ==>15 MB
/root   ==>854 MB
/swap   ==>321 MB
/home   ==>854 MB

I assume Linux has no limits as far as partitioning is concerned. As I
do not have a partitioning tool for NTFS, I was inquiring for some
solutions.

Many Thanks,

Roman

Ater you logon and get the prompt $ , type startx and then press enter.
It should look thus
paul]$ startx
If the install completed this will launch x-windows.

Technically I would say yes. I know it can be done in OS/2, I have done it
there. I don't know how to do that in Linux, I don't use a regular modem
but an ISDN card.

>How on earth does an ISP cram all those calls into one phone number?

In fact, an ISP has tons of phone numbers, perhaps upto 1000. Through the
phone center all the incoming calls on 1 number are sort of de-multiplexed
into the array of available numbers and one that is free is selected.

Use linuxconf for that, in the networking section.

I'm not sure if this has been answered yet, so here goes: the '.' before

Re: [newbie] Changing partition type

2000-06-03 Thread Alan Shoemaker

WayneI just installed Corel 1.0 yesterday on a similar
system as you describe. I got my copy as a freebie when I
bought some books from Linux Mall.

Watch out, I installed with expert, assuming I'd get the most
control possible. But it never made a boot floppy, nor did it
give me any choice on where it would install lilo, it just
overwrote my mbr. Also it wouldn't use my preexisting
partitions, instead of allowing me to specify a mount point
for an existing ext2 partition, it forced me to delete and

Comment out the line in Mandrake's fstab to avoid problems,
then rewrite the line after you've done your Corel install and
are back in Mandrake. Then you can test your fstab entry
before rebooting Mandrake.

Garythis newbie list and its partner, the expert list,
have a much broader knowledge base, especially for solving
Linux Mandrake specific problems, than any paid email or phone
support system could possibly have. I'm sure that you'll be
able to solve your problem using one or both of these lists.
Using them with, perhaps some extra patience, as not everybody
who participates sees every message that gets posted.

[newbie] Mandrake 7.1 Release

2000-06-03 Thread michael

Hi  there!
Well, MUO says the release for mandrake 7.1 is this weekend! I can't
wait to see it and can't download that much stuff with my 28.8 connection
here, so I ordered it from  LinuxLand
when They said they were planning to ship early next week!
My KDE specific comment(s):
Like most mandrake users, I love the KDE desktop
and features best!  I am wondering whether we are going to see any
Konqueror in 7.1 and who knows what version of KDE will be included? Is
there a specific liason between KSE and Mandrakesoft, or do they just grab
the latest build and run with it?

[newbie] Can't alter resolution - is Linux video driver the answer ??

2000-06-03 Thread Andrew J Fortune

Hi there,

This is my first posting, so "hello,
everyone".

I installed Mandrake Linux v7.0 a bit over a week now. It
basically went OK, but with a few teething problems that I can't seem to
resolve.

When I first logged in, I noticed that it woke up in
640x480 mode. So I furiously set about to find out how to change this to
1024x768. This turned into a total exercise in frustration - I was simply unable
to do it. I hit a few newsgroups to try to resolve this, and I got a lot of
advice about using XF86Setup, xconfigurator, DrakConf and a couple of other X
Configuration tools to re-set the resolution. Nothing worked !! ... so it has
been driving me absolutely crazy

I think this problem had something to do with the fact
that the Mandrake Installer automatically installed some software called "Kernel
version 2.2.14 with framebuffer support". I have since found out that this
software can only support 640x480, and this is why it has stubbornly refused to
change resolution the way that I want it. I don't know why Mandrake did not
allow me to manually configure the X Server, but I had no control over this.

Along the way, I have been advised by a couple of people
to install a Linux driver for my video card (which is a Trident Blade 3D/MVP4).
So, I hunted one down and I now have a file called XF86_SVGA.GZ on my hard disk,
waiting to be installed.

I am wondering if someone can tell me how I can install
this driver on to my Linux partition ? Also, does anyone know why Mandrake
automatically installed linux-fb on my machine without allowing me to manually
configure the X server.

One other problem with the LILO prompt -- Can anyone
suggest why I can't manually enter "linux-fb", "linux" or "fb" and get in -- I
get an error message "Block Move Error 0xAE" ?? If I don't enter anything,
it defaults to linux-fb and boots up to Linux. It also allows me to key in
"windows" to get into Windows 98.

(I should mention a couple of technical details - my PC is
a Compaq Presario, my monitor is a Compaq MV520, and - as previously mentioned -
my video card is a Trident Blade 3D/MVP4.)

Many thanks in advance.

regards,
Andrew J Fortune

Wayne, I got this from www.xfree.org:

XFree86 4.0 is now available. The documentation is available on-line.
Please read the README and Release Notes first. The distribution is
available from our ftp site. or from one of the mirror sites. Source can
be downloaded, but is not necessary for installing and using XFree86.
Pre-compiled binary distributions are available for most supported
platforms. Some of those binaries have been updated since the initial
release, and a list of those updates is available.

Before downloading and installing the binary distributions, please read
the Installation Notes carefully. This will help you download the correct
files for your system. If you're looking for a stable version of XFree86,
you might be better off with the latest 3.3.x release. There is some basic
information comparing the hardware support in 3.3.x with 4.0 in the driver
status document. Please check there to get an idea if your hardware is
supported in 4.0.

It seems to be stable enough, but it still lacks support for many video
cards, as it seems.

[newbie] DISCUSSION Poor Support

2000-06-03 Thread Piero

In a formaer mail, I suggested that MK should improove client support, and I
complained that the franch support team has never been able,
or willing, to answer one of my questions.

This was hyperbolic, but just slightly so. Denis asked me which were my
questions: here are a couple of them.

- How can I manage to make a bootdisk using an LS-120 device?

- Is it possible to use a laptop as a second terminal of the computer that runs
Linux?

As I already told, some of the recipients of the mail list has been able to
answer them, or to direct me toward an answer; but, as [EMAIL PROTECTED] says,
"Poor support makes Mankrake look bad".

Re: [newbie] Command execution

2000-06-03 Thread GAPrichard

Perhaps the confusion here is that Windows looks in the logged directory
FIRST and executes "namedcommand" if found. If the "namedcommand" is not
found it then searches the path, in order, and executes the first match it
finds. I found this handy and will alter my bash preferences to search the
local directory first, as suggested by Jim and others. Thanks, didn't know
this behavior was that easy to alter.

Wherever you are, when you type a command name, the command interpreter (say
bash) looks for this command in a certain set of directories : the list of the
names of such directories is associated to the (environment) variable PATH. If
none of these direcories contains the wanted command, the anwer of bash is
"command not found".

On the other side, when you type ./programme, you tell explicitly bash not to
look for programme in the PATH listed directories, but in the present working
directroy.

The environment variable PATH recieves its value through a certain number of
initialising files : /etc/profile ; ~/.profile ; ~/bash_profile ; etc.

On the other side, in the bash/sh/csh/etc. world, the character "." indicates
the directory in which you are, i.e. the present work directory.

The ./ means to look in the current directory rather than searching the
"path" for the program.

Re: [newbie] Administration Question

2000-06-03 Thread bascule

hi flupke,
your answer to john's post is interesting because it says that a group
can own files, i always assumed that an 'owner' had to be a user (though
i never saw that written anywhere), can a group also be a member of
another group like a user can?

Re: [newbie] Tape Streamer

2000-06-03 Thread GAPrichard

Are you using the DittoMax internal (second (ISA)) floppy controller, or
are you using the floppy controller that your computer uses to run your
floppy drive(s)? Now that Techmar has bought the Ditto drives from Iomega,
does anybody know a good (read: reasonably priced) source for tapes? I used
to be able to get them from Wal*Mart, paying 33-50% more for the same thing
isn't going over well with me.

 Hi,

Am having a problem configuring the software for my Iomega internal tape
streamer. The device is connected correctly and I can force it to write
 and read tapes.

However, before it will work (in fact before it will recognise that
there is a tape in the drive itself), I need manually to install modules
 as follows:

 insmod ftape
 insmod zftape

 and it works fine.

ftape.o is shown in the modules list as unused but zftape.o is not
 included.

Would someone please tell me how to handle these modules so that I avoid
this manual operation and just can click on the mount/unmount tape
button for the tape to spring into life. It is no doubt somewhere in
the documentation but I cannot find it.

BTW congratulations to Mandrake on a very nice set of packages and the
easiest of Linux installation routines I have met.

 Thanks for any assistance offered.

Re: [newbie] How To become Linux-Mandrake Registered User

2000-06-03 Thread GAPrichard

I looked at the disc that came with Maximum Linux, purchased a retail
copy and mailed in an enclosed card. There were no registration numbers on
the card. Is this sufficient; do I need to register on-line also, or what?

Hmmm... I don't remember when this was configured but at installation time,
you can tell the system to boot KDE or GNOME or something else. I had to do
a partial reinstall because of a LILO problem and when I boot, the xdm
windows allows me to choose what desktop env. I want. I would eventually
like to revert to GNOME only (like it was when I did my first install).

[newbie] install from a hard drive

2000-06-03 Thread Jon Dowd

Hello,

Could you point me to information regarding installing from a hard drive?

Can I ftp the files I will need to install Mandrake (btw... what files and
what version) onto a hard drive and install from that hard drive rather than
buying a CD?

Should the files be copied on to a fat file system or ext2?

Should the install files be on the same hard drive as the destination hard
drive or on another one?

Thanks, Jon Dowd

[newbie] can't install x-windows....rest of computer is f(*ed up!

2000-06-03 Thread Paul John Kiener

hello,
can anyone help me with this problem.
1st, i tried to install linux. i had the opportunity to have linux
take over my whole computer, since i ended up formatting everything.
so i had autoallocate allocate and create the partitions in the linux
setup. then, i installed it. after installing the packages, i reached
the part where it said it was going to install x-windows. so i waited.
then the screen turned black for like 2 seconds, then it went to a
screen full of gray x's. i shutdown the comp. rebooted, and it started
in the mandrake dos type thing where it asks for my localhost login.
after that, all i get is this prompt...
[paul@localhost paul]$
and from there i don't know what to do. i tried to re-install linux
over again to setup x-windowsbut no avail either. help please! God
bless! peace!

Well, messing with the timeout value is the right way to do it. Did you
install new information afterwards? Just changing the values isn't enough, I
think. But I don't remember what the exact command to write out the boot
information is.
