Re: [newbie-it] 2 versioni di linux sullo stesso disco

è possibile installare 2 versioni differenti di linux sullo stesso dis
co?

 quella buona in uso...

Si, pero` hai bisogno di una partizione in piu` per lo swap, il che ti
fa
superare il limite di 4 e richiede l'uso di partizioni logiche.
Quindi:
partizione 1: windows (fat o ntfs)

In a terminal as root run XFdrake or in Mandrake Control Center Hardware

If it tests your display and asks if it was displayed correctly, choose

[newbie] Error messages during shutting down

2002-01-11 Thread Mandrake Newbie

Hello everybody! =)

I'm currently using Mandrake 8.1 on Asus CUVR4X-C motherboard, Intel Pentium III 800
Mhz, 384 MB SDRAM and 20 GB Seagate Barraccuda 7200 RPM hard disk drive.

My problem started when I successfully installed kernel-2.4.16.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm in
my Mandrake 8.1 system. As most (if not all) of you know, Mandrake 8.1 has a default
kernel version of 2.4.8. Basically, I did upgrade my default kernel. I installed my
new kernel version using the command of:

# rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.16.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm

Also, my partitions and filesystems are:

/boot - ext2fs
/usr - XFS
/home - XFS
/opt - XFS
/var - XFS
swap
/ - ext2fs

...and I also add lines in my LILO for my new kernel to boot-up.

Actually, I am encountering error messages during shutting down my system. Below are
the error messages that are displayed during shutdown:

/etc/rc0.d/S01halt: line -76: 5401 segmentation fault $*

What does the error messages mean? How will I get over it?

So far, I haven't encountered any problems yet using my new kernel 2.4.16.9 installed
except for the error messages during shutting down.

Thanks in advance for your help.

On a box like that, nothing should run that slowly, but StarOffice

animation rendering (Netscape 6.0 was strong competition at one time,
though!). I'd say if you don't need the propietary features of SO,
Open Office is fine and should be faster. SO 6.0 beta is also a
little faster. You might also be able to speed things up by not
installing components you don't need, though I can't promise anything

I have never done this, but I would think you could fairly easily. I would
remove the primary disk to install winders. Then, I would install Winders
completely as if it was its own machine. Then, I would plug my mandrake

mandrake and then go into the boot configuration to boot the winders disk.
It might work.

I could be mistaken, but I think swapping HDs will screw

There's probably a way around it, but I couldn't tell you

[newbie] Kernel update question [How to]

I'm going through the process of updating my kernel as detailed in

question comes from this snippet of text where I'm supposed to add something
to lilo so I can boot to the old kernel if I need to:

You will also want to create a new entry with the initrd and image
directives pointing to the old kernel's vmlinuz and initrd images so you may
also boot from the old images if required.
How do I make these additions to /etc/lilo.conf?

Pretty much. The executable is inside the kdenetwork rpm, but that almost
definitely won't work without kdebase and kdelibs, and those require arts

Oh yes, and qt to drive the whole plot ...

[newbie] Downloading proper Nvidia driver file

2002-01-11 Thread Admin

Hello:

Recently my video card died, and I replaced it with a 32Mb DDR Nvidia Ge
Force 2GTS. My hard drive is partitioned, so installing the proper drivers
for my windows portion was uneventful. Unfortunately, I can't say the same
about my linux partition. When I boot up in linux, I can only get the
console (terminal) mode, in runlevel 3. So I need to install the drivers in
linux as well.

I visited the nvidia site and according to their instructions I need to
download two files. One is the glx file and the other is an .rpm kernel
file which corresponds to my system. Question is, it is not clear to me,
which is the correct file. I have installed Mandrake 8.0 with kernel 2.4.3
(i.e. the standard installation of mandrake power pack edition). The
options in the nvidia site are: the UP kernel, the enterprise kernel, or
the smp kernel. Any ideas which is the file I should d/l, or at least how
to find out?

Also, I don't play video games in my system, is there by any chance some
kind of generic driver I can install, which was included with the original
powerpak package? Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Dexter

My problem started when I successfully installed kernel-2.4.16.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm
in my Mandrake 8.1 system. As most (if not all) of you know, Mandrake 8.1 has a
default kernel version of 2.4.8. Basically, I did upgrade my default kernel. I
installed my new kernel version using the command of:

 # rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.16.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm

Also, my partitions and filesystems are:

 /boot - ext2fs
 /usr - XFS

 /opt - XFS
 /var - XFS
 swap

...and I also add lines in my LILO for my new kernel to boot-up.

Actually, I am encountering error messages during shutting down my system. Below
are the error messages that are displayed during shutdown:

 /etc/rc0.d/S01halt: line -76: 5401 segmentation fault $*

What does the error messages mean? How will I get over it?

So far, I haven't encountered any problems yet using my new kernel 2.4.16.9

I see nothing obvious in the halt script except the possibility that you
somehow have Aurora called in a non-fb kernel. Everything else there
would be straightforward. The other possibility would be unmounting a
non-existent device (a device file under the old kernel that is not
setup under the new, and obviously one you do not use, but even that
does not explain a segfault. More likely, something is out of
synchronization or your initrd.img points to the wrong set of modules
(which should cause considerably more trouble than this).

I've installed Mandrake 7.2 on machines with as little as 32 MB, and
even ran KDE on them (slowly). I had larger hard disks, but you can
squeeze it into 400 MB -- you just have to pick what you want. Will
this be your first install of Linux?

If so, might be a little tough, but I'd give it a shot. Mandrake
usually offers to install a percentage of the available packages if they
won't all fit, and I'd expect that they select the packages in that
percentage with the most important first (or at least a core of
important packages).

My Linux installation seems to be stable enough to actually use on a

Oh ya, I forgot to mention that you must

* Be running XFree86 4.0.1 or later.
* Change your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 so that
Driver nv is replaced withDriver nvidia
Load glxis added to the Module section
Load dri must be deleted if present
Load GLcore must be deleted if present

Okay, that should do it.

You could use the nv driver, but setting up nVidia's
 drivers is easy.

 up  = a single processor
 smp = dual processor
enterprise = a pretty good show, but they need to get
out of the damn re-runs. Oh ya, it's also the
kernel that handles memory 900MB, and probably
   other stuff.

Odds are you need the the up.

 1) Download these

 http://205.158.109.140/XFree86_40/1.0-2313/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2313.i386.rpm

 2) As root,

 rpm -i NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2313.mdk80up.i386.rpm
 rpm -i NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2313.i386.rpm

 3) Restart X.

If you have a network card for the laptop and you have another computer, the

Since DOS is not case-sensitive, as long as you spelled the directory

logical conclusion is that the directory really does not exist. Could
this be an instance where Windows is actually maintaining a single file,

and it hangs. I'm aware that the game needs the cd running, and therein lies
my problem. How do you write the argument for wine to get it to run the cd?

What I run:

I've cd to /Caesar3 [all the files are on my linux partition] then typed in:
 wine c3.exe c3_mapping.exe

Obviously, I'm missing something [perhaps /mnt/cdrom/Caesar3??]

Any help will be appreciated [I'd really like to dump W98!]

Tia,
Andre

make a directory, maybe /mnt/windows
then issue the following command
mount -t msdos /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows
(assuming your windows is on partition hda1)

Then your windows disk should be at /mnt/windows
do a ls /mnt/windows to see it.

Re: [newbie] OpenOffice build 641c

2002-01-11 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

Build would mean compile. Since precompiled binaries are available, there is
no need to compile the source yourself. The installation only takes a few
minutes.

One word of warning: OpenOffice.org/StarOffice 6 is still beta-quality software.
At present, I have found that it performs a little faster than SO 5.2. Since
speed optimisation usually comes last in the development cycle, expect this to
improve with the final version. Another thing to watch out for is stability.
OpenOffice.org Build 641c has proven to be reasonably stable for me, but I have
experienced the odd crash and document file corruption. Keep backups of your
work if you're editing them in OpenOffice.org/SO6.

 Tia,

Andre:

I'm not sure how the economics work out, but what about an old fashioned
serial port external modem? NO drivers, NO web searches, NO downloads, NO
hassle -- just a simple serial cable, and that's all that there is. Yes, you
do have to find a plug for the power wart and a place to set the box, but
those are simple problems. In return, you get lights -- sometimes
useful for problem solving, and always entertaining during long
downloads. And it's very simple to move it from one box to another. Main
point, though: It simply works. Efficiently and quietly. And, if you use a
good protection device (lightning will kill modems almost instantly), it will
last for a long time.

A confession: A family emergency arose last month that required providing my
wife with a PC with dialup access -- NOW!! The PC was no problem, as I just
happened to have an old box with Mandrake 8.0 installed. However, it didn't
have a modem. So I went to the local Staples, and the only thing that I found
that I was certain would work was a real honest-to-God genuine authentic bona
fide serial modem. Bought it, brought it home, plugged it in, Mandrake
recognized it, and it worked just as advertised. The problem was solved, and
I continue to eat well. IMHO, this beats the hell out of mucking about with
web searches, drivers, patches, config files and all of that other stuff.

Summary: If it's in your budget, get a real modem. External is better than
internal.

Good luck,
Carroll

Re:[newbie] Fetchmail Configure

2002-01-11 Thread Mel Roman

I've just recently started using fetchmail myself.
You'll want to first get procmail (the Mail Delivery
Agent that comes in your Mandrake distribution)
configured first, and then configure fetchmail to
fetch your mail and have them processed by procmail
(which will sort them and put them in the mail folder
of your choice, etc... with recipes that you can
write). About the best fetchmail documentation that
I've found is the on-line documentation (type man
fetchmail). It's not step-by-step, but if you read
through it, it's not too bad. You can find some good
introductions to procmail for newbies from the
www.procmail.org website. I found Nancy McGeough's
overview for newbies at the following site especially
helpful:http://www.ii.com/internet/robots/procmail/qs/

After reviewing the fetchmail and procmail
documentation you may still have a few questions, but
hopefully these will give you a start.

Good luck,

Mel

Mandrake may have already set up your windows files as a directory under /mnt
If you go into Konqueror File Manager, labelled 'home directory' on your
desktop and look in the left pane you will see the root directory. Just click
on the plus sign in front of it (like in Windows) or double click on it and
all the 'sub' directories will appear. One of them will be the mnt directory.
Click on the plus sign in front of it and within it should appear the windows
directory labelled 'windows'. Once there, it should all be familiar
territory.

mnt is where linux puts other file systems and Mandrake is very good at
setting it up during installation.

Well, the behavior you describe does not reproduce on any of my test

dmesg

optput will do; a printout of

cat /etc/modules.conf

a listing

of the output of lspcidrake,

at a minimum.

Some folks have reported effectiveness with linking (using ln -s) some

It may be also that your sound is double-loaded and the excess one,

try the winex build at http://www.transgaming.com/ they claim ceaser 3 is a 4
out of 5 on working quality. see

you do need to pay to get their winex in rpm but the source is free. roll

if you can, a one time (i think it is 5 dollars) payment is always nice for
these companies, they generaly do pretty good work after all.

Re: [newbie] OpenOffice build 641c

2002-01-11 Thread Andre Dubuc

Thanks Sridhar,

Or should I say, ahaha: so that's what build means -- should've guessed it.
I once tried my hand at building Wordnet'. That was some experience! I tried
it within my first Linux month -- a very bad move!

I plan to keep SO5.2 in the background with all my important stuff, and I
burn a cd backup regularly [I learned the hard way!].

Thanks for the reply, and your advice. It's always valuable, as usual!

One word of warning: OpenOffice.org/StarOffice 6 is still beta-quality
software. At present, I have found that it performs a little faster than SO
5.2. Since speed optimisation usually comes last in the development cycle,
expect this to improve with the final version. Another thing to watch out
for is stability. OpenOffice.org Build 641c has proven to be reasonably
stable for me, but I have experienced the odd crash and document file
corruption. Keep backups of your work if you're editing them in
 OpenOffice.org/SO6.

|

| directives pointing to the old kernel's vmlinuz and initrd images so
| you may also boot from the old images if required.
| How do I make these additions to /etc/lilo.conf?

After installing your kernel with
# rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.x-xmdk.i586.rpm
look in /boot where your new vmlinuz/images will have been installed.
Sometimes the new kernel installation adds the new kernel vmlinuz (boot
image) to /etc/lilo.conf for you (usually at the bottom of the file). If
it has not already been added for you, add it yourself. For example when
I installed a new kernel (2.4.16.3mdk-1-1mdkenterprise) I added:

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.16.3mdk-1-1mdkenterprise
label=24163-1-1mdkent
root=/dev/hda5
read-only
optional
vga=normal
append= hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi devfs=nomount mem=1152M

You can use similar parameters to your existing kernel listing in the
lilo.conf file. The label can be anything you like so that you can
identify it when lilo gives you the option at boot. If you want to make
the new kernel your default to boot, just change the default= (near the
top of the file) to your new kernel label.

After saving the file, you must run lilo for changes to take effect. In a
terminal as root:
# lilo or # /sbin/lilo

Then reboot and enjoy!

[newbie] GCC / CC compiler problems

2002-01-11 Thread Pauljames Dimitriu

Hello,

I wrote a while ago about problems I was having
w/ the GCC / CC compilers and I still can't get it to
work.

I checked my /usr/bin directories as people have
suggested and I see the files are still there. When I
do an ls in the /usr/bin directory, I get the
following:

 gcc*

and when I do an ls cc in the same directory, I
get the following:

 cc@

Now I do a set cc = /usr/bin/cc and that
doesn't work. I do a set cc = /usr/bin/cc@ and that
doesn't work either, nor does it work w/ any
permutation of set gcc = /usr/bin/gcc

Any ideas of anything that might be wrong? I
have no idea what's happening. I'm guessing it has
something to do w/ the (*) and the (@) that follows
the file name.

 Thanks,

 Paul

I have quite a bit of analog video footage (i.e. standard VHS
videocassettes) that I am interested in capturing and outputting into
some kind of vcd format. From what I read, it is possible to put video
onto a standard (non-DVD) CD-R in a format that can be played by most
DVD players.

If anyone has successfully done something like this in Linux, I would
be grateful to hear of what hardware/software you used and what steps
you followed.

Thanks.

I'm still having a FORBIDDEN error on my local user directory for apache
public_html. I have tried changing the permissions on the directory using
CHMOD, CHOWN and whatever else I could find. I thought it might be because
of using my cable modem, but when I shut it down it doesn't work and I can
only get files in the /var/www/html directory. I'm a single user so I can
continue my php programming lessons using /var/www/html, but I have to do
that at a root level, and besides - I didn't have this problem with another
cpu I had installed Apache/PHP/MYSQl on. It's bugging me to death! I've
RTFM on PHP site, Apache site, and peruse the mailing lists. I have
checked my .conf files and everything looks fine!

What else could be happening?

the audio from Real Player? I'm using LM 8.1 and I think the RealPlayer is
from the 7.2 cdrom, because I had problems installing RP 8.0.

Thanks in advance

You were right about adding the Octal addresses. (That is Octal, isn't it?)
The first one you had me try (the one above setting all 4 devices) was
apparently the correct one as it worked right away with no errors. I did a
lilo -t to test it out and got no errors, so I then committed it and
restarted the system, and my LILO menu was back where it belonged.

Thank you very much for your help and your explanation into how LILO works
and thank you to the other people that helped me to sort this out.

RE: [newbie] binding ip and new registered domain based website, have problem

2002-01-11 Thread Matt Bullock

You need to create an address record for the domain. You registered the
domain with dotsaway.com, so either have them create a record or if they
have a user interface you can do it yourself. Just create a couple 'A'
records:
12.34.56.78 A www
12.34.56.78 A linuxspice.com

I have installed Mandrake 8.1 in a dual boot with Windows 2000 on my Dell
desktop. The first thing I would like to do is get some of my previous
text documents transferred from the Windows sector into Linux. But with
the KDE file manager, I cannot see into the Windows area. Can someone
advise me on how to do this?

You may have a problem if you have Win2K using NTFS? Not done it myself, but I think
NTFS and Linux have a problem. Someone advise please?

Re: [newbie] Cannot get into system, how do I rescue Lilo?

2002-01-11 Thread David Stevenson

OK, you want to resue LILO,

Boot from the CD and type rescue; then:

mkdir /rescue

What /dev/hd?? is you normal / root directory

mnt -t ext2 /dev/hd?? /rescue
rm -rf /boot
ln -s /rescue/boot /boot

Edit the file /rescue/etc/lilo.conf to what you want

/rescue/sbin/lilo -C /rescue/etc/lilo.conf

This will re-write your lilo
There are more ways, but this is the way I remember, used it many times

  Hi folks,

A dual boot system. I was trying repair an earlier
problem, and of course made it even worse. Now Lilo
will not boot up. It gets to LI and just sits there

the system again. I have tried booting into the boot
cd and typing 'rescue', I can then get to a prompt.
After looking at an article about basic Unix
commands I used 'ls' to see my directories. Whoopee,
I can see then 'til I'm blue in the face. I swear I
am going to take a course in basic Linux commands
  after I get through this!
I did also try to reinstall the whole kit and
kiboodle, but each time I try, it gets as far as
installing packages and then just quits, with two
minutes to go! The activity lights on the cdrom
drive and HD just die. I've tried waiting for ages!
Nothing! I tried using the Plextor burner as a boot
device and to load the OS from but with the same
  result.
Here are some tech details that may help.
Any help will be gratefully appreciated, as I'm
kinda' dead in the water here. (Posting from the
