[newbie-it] usare gcc 3.01 invece di 2.96
Ciao e grazie a tutti Biss

[newbie-it] sempre su Mandrake [era: Perplessità]

:(( Come risolvo? Grazie a tutti.

It always warps on me and I can't get it to go real time. Press 'e'. I have another oddity, though. Tux has always run full-screen in the past. Now it's running at 640x480 (or 800x600?) but the monitor resolution doesn't change from 1280x1024. Wait a minute--I just remembered I was messing with monitor settings last week. I bet I accidentally changed the video card while I was doing that. And my monitor resolution is better (the frequency that is), but I had to do a custom setting to accomplish it. I bet the custom setting is preventing TuxRacer from going full-screen. That sux. I'll have to play with more flexible monitor settings, I guess. [newbie] complete newbie so hopefully easy questions
Hi all I bought Linux mandrake 8.1 a couple of months ago and have just recently installed it on my second system and so far like it so much that I think in the near future I may not even keep a windows machine and just run all Linux and Mac. I do have a couple of questions the first one which I think is very simple and I am just missing it How do you install tar.gz files I have downloaded quite a few apps for my system and I understand the rpm stuff just fine I am just a little confused about the tar.gz files. The other concern I can't seem to get my USB HP psc750 all in one to work it seems to configure in the set up yet it won't print just wondering if there is something blaringly obvious that I am doing wrong. I would also like to add that in the short time I have been subscribed to this list I have learned a lot of great information and hopefully as I get to be a bit more familiar with the inner workings of Linux I can return the favors and answer a few questions as well. Then i decide to uninstall all the xmms packages. After thats done i say Son of a bitch because i let a friend borrow my mandrake CDs monday and won't see him for a few days. Then i head on over to rpmfind.net and download a few xmms packages and libxmms packages to meet the dependancies. Re: [newbie] LAN with 2 IP's from DSL povider ?
Hanan, No - they are not on a LAN, they are sharing a path to the internet. But this can be changed very easily. Just set up the linux machine to share its internet connection and the W2K box uses this as a gateway. The connection to the DSL would then come from a 2nd NIC installed in the linux machine. This way your linux machine can firewall your W2K box and both machines can share resources, including the internet. Obviously this requires you to install an additional NIC, but they are cheap! If you need more specific help on how to go about it, just post again - lots of people here have done this many times. Or if you like the GUI way, Kpackage has the find file option. But if the file you're searching for is installed from tarball kpackage won't find it because the rpm-database consists of info about installed rpms only. Re: [newbie] LAN with 2 IP's from DSL povider ?
Thank you Brian, but the point is I already had this connection sharing, and I was able to set it up with the help of some list members ( infact you were the one who helped me out alot back then :) ) but the problem is that while having this sharing, and Linux was used as a firewall, and Bastille was running...etc. I had performance problems, my connection used to go down a lot, and when I contacted the ISP their technician came in and said that the reason why I was getting disconnected is becoz the NIC was trying to connect with a 100 speed while the line can only handle 10, thats why i was getting disconnected too often. He said he didnt know how to force the card to connect with 10 under linux, so he offered me a new IP ( without paying for it though :) I posted another question on the list asking if I can force the card to connect with 10 speed, Isnt there a way to concet both PCs while them having the 2 IP's ? I really liked the idea coz back then my w2k machine had to get off the net whenever I needed to take my notebook ( the linux machine ) with me to school ( which used to piss off my 4 years old son as he couldnt surf pbskids.org while I wasnt at home :) ) I just need them to be on the same LAN so that i can share the printer and browse both hard drives using samba. But instead the * is resolved as including the /home directory itself, and its permissions get reset to rwx--. I changed the /home/* line to 711, and it now seems to avoid locking me out of my home directory, but obviously it's not doing just what it's supposed to be doing. I configured the second partition with blocking factors of 1024, 2048, and 4096. With a blocking factor of 1024, the second partition (/dev/hdd5) ran out of space. I list the results of the df command below for the other blocking factors in parenthesis. Does anyone have any ideas? Here's what I think is happening: In /usr/msec/perm.4, which presumably is the permissions msec is supposed to set (mask?) at security level 4, the following lines appear (among others): /home/root.adm751 /home/* current 700 This should mean (I think) that /home should be owned by root, have group adm, and have permissions rwxr-x--x, whereas everything *in* /home should have its current owner and group, and permissions rwx--. But instead the * is resolved as including the /home directory itself, and its permissions get reset to rwx--. I changed the /home/* line to 711, and it now seems to avoid locking me out of my home directory, but obviously it's not doing just what it's supposed to be doing. I am really surprised that no one else seems to have found this bug. The only relevant thing I can think of that's different about my system is that I have /home mounted from its own partition, but that must be very common. Mike, i wonder if these are processed in order from first to last and simply reversing the order you give above would fix the prob. [newbie] Kmail problems
In Kmail under LM 8.2, when attempting to fill in the To:, CC:, or BCC fields, I get an error message the moment I begin to type an email address. The error box header is File Error and says Could not load the file. Clicking OK gives another box saying Kmail crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV). [newbie] Fluxbox and Mandrake 8.1
I have a small problem that hopefully will have a small answer... I'm currently using fluxbox and i'd like to be able to use all those nifty dockable apps that go into the slit and as far as i can tell, the way to do that is to add a line into my .xinitrc file, but unfortunately mandrake sets up it's window managers using a file in /etc/X11/wmsession.d (this is my understanding of it anyway) Now when i add my app of choice to the end of the fluxbox file (with the -w option by the way) nothing happens when i restart (the computer, X, and fluxbox). So my problem, as you may have guessed, is how to get those apps to start up automatically without using a .xinitrc! (they do work, BTW. I know this because i started them from the command line; i'd just like to not have to start them manually) And to further complicate matters, the last time i tried to generate an .xinitrc file i ended up have to Alt-Ctrl-1 over to a different console and delete the file because it locked up X. So i'm a little hesitant to try it again. A little help? Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
