[newbie-it] usare gcc 3.01 invece di 2.96

2002-05-02 Thread Biss

 _cc=gcc
 che cambierai in
 _cc=gcc-3.0.1

fai _sempre_ prima
 utilizzato).

O.K., ci provo e ti farò sapere! Solo che devo aspettare la prossima
settimana per avere i sorgenti di mplayer.

Ciao e grazie a tutti

 Oggetto: [newbie-it] warning - megapippa

scaricandomi
poi QNX (installazione andata a buon fine, mi sembra veloce, provero'
 a usarlo).

cd,

[newbie-it] sempre su Mandrake [era: Perplessità]

2002-05-02 Thread Brunini Alessandro

Salve sono ancora io,
siccome sono testardo ho:

1) Disinstallato StarOffice6.0

kdeinit: kio_ftp ftp /tmp/ksocket-.

generale cmq dovrebbe fornire: voltaggi, temperatura CPU, temperatura

[newbie-it] domandina...

2002-05-02 Thread Brunini Alessandro

Salve a tutti,

Come risolvo?

readcd. Che cosa posso usare al suo posto? CDparanoia non ha funzionato.

Grazie a tutti.

Un saluto.

monitor resolution doesn't change from 1280x1024.

Wait a minute--I just remembered I was messing with monitor
settings last week. I bet I accidentally changed the video
card while I was doing that. And my monitor resolution is
better (the frequency that is), but I had to do a custom
setting to accomplish it. I bet the custom setting is
preventing TuxRacer from going full-screen. That sux. I'll
have to play with more flexible monitor settings, I guess.

[newbie] XMMS - Fast Play - SOS - (funny must read)

2002-05-02 Thread Brian York

Linux is up to the same tricks as winders is
'mysteriously changing things'

The senario:

I wake up this morning and play some mp3s while i'm
getting ready. (nothing harmful so far). Before i
leave i lock my KDE screen. I get back tonight and
fire up XMMS and push play and the chipmonks is
singing and i'm thinking WTF did someone install
winders? With a second look at my screen i notice the
bright blue K button (Crystal icon set) and start to
think is linux gonna start changing shit like winders
did when i used it a long time ago.

Then i decide to uninstall all the xmms packages.
After thats done i say Son of a bitch because i let
a friend borrow my mandrake CDs monday and won't see
him for a few days. Then i head on over to rpmfind.net
and download a few xmms packages and libxmms packages
to meet the dependancies. After i get them installed i
fire up good ole XMMS again and take a guess at what
happens.i said guess...yep
your right the revenge of the chipmonks singng there
fast tunes. Then i point my browser to
http://mail.yahoo.com and write this email. (yahoo is
a bunch of fuckers for stoping pop access i hate the
web interface)

I ask you how do i fix this catastraphy of speedy
lyrics and jimmy page playing faster than he had ever
played before?

On a side note:
Does anyone know of a free email that gives free
pop/smtp? I hate web interfaces, g.

Thanks

Sorry the other Q's I can't answer, but this one even *I* know ;)

This is usually is a 2 step installation for Tar's.
-

type at a command prompt *in a Term, like Xterm*:

tar xzvf /name/of/dir/here/nameofprogramtountar-2.1.0.tgz

OR

tar xjvf /name/of/dir/here/nameofprogramtountar-2.1.0.tgz

[The first set of commands tar xzvf, are for files ending in .tar.gz
or .tgz.]

[The second set is for a Bzipped file ending in .tar.bz2 or .tbz2.]

Now usually this will unzip/untar these files into a directory with the
same name as the program under your Home dir.

To compile install the software we do thusly:

./configure
make
su -c make install

[This last line prompts for ROOTs password so enter it here].

If you want to change any of the options of the installer, type
./configure -help. Usually you can change the default location with
the PREFIX argument too.

Hi Brian,

I have the Canon S450 as well. It worked well in LM 8.0, although the output
quality using CUPS was interesting -- I switched over to Turboprint. You
really have to try turboprint -- the quality is simply outstanding! They
have a driver for this model as well. A free d/l is available, and if I was
ever to purchase software, turboprint pro would be well worth the $.

I haven't used it so far in LM 8.2 (mainly because all my tanks are empty),
but it's all set to go.

There is a 'media type' parameter in the iwconfig command. See 'man iwconfig'

Not all drivers support it however. Usually the card will auto detect the
rate. So if you can force your hub or whatever it is connected to, to 10Mbps
then the pcmcia card will follow suit.

[newbie] LEXMARK Z52,Z53Pinter Page Margins / LM8.2

2002-05-02 Thread John Richard Smith

For some reason Qtcups no longer has a Printer page margins tab / GUI
interface.
However there is a Kstart/configure/printing/Adjust margins ,
provides a semi-commandline interface, which prints out a testpage
from which you are supposed to gleen vital settings to type in and
which are stored in /etc/cups/ppd/Z53a.ppd

Fine, only the test page cuts off the last line, the vital one,
so I cannot complete the settings properly, but this is the relevant
entry in /etc/cups/ppd/Z53.ppd

*OpenUI *Margins/Page Margins/Offsets: PickOne
*DefaultMargins: Custom
*Margins Default/Driver Default:
*Margins Custom/Custom (set with 'alignmargins')
  : /.HWMargins[1 0.75 0.75 0.75] /Margins[1 1]setpagedevice
*CloseUI: *Margins

I believe it is the X and the Y values that are wrong as
defined by /margins[1 1] above.

Anyone got any idea what sort of value I should have.
I would also like to know how to ensure these magins are adopted.

Re: [newbie] LAN with 2 IP's from DSL povider ?

2002-05-02 Thread Brian Parish

Hanan,

No - they are not on a LAN, they are sharing a path to the internet. But
this can be changed very easily. Just set up the linux machine to share
its internet connection and the W2K box uses this as a gateway. The
connection to the DSL would then come from a 2nd NIC installed in the
linux machine.

This way your linux machine can firewall your W2K box and both machines
can share resources, including the internet.

Obviously this requires you to install an additional NIC, but they are
cheap! If you need more specific help on how to go about it, just post
again - lots of people here have done this many times.

You haven't installed KDE3 yet! The urpmi.addmedia simply adds the
directory to the list of sources used by urpmi and the Mandrake Software
Manger (such as Mandrake CD1, CD2, etc). To actually install KDE3, go
back to the directory where you have the files (/home/MyName/kde3 in
your posting). Once there, root, do a urpmi * and that will install
it.

Assuming you are using KDM login shell, login with the default
session. Hopefully, that will open up either KDE or Gnome. Next go to

the K or foot menu and go to Configuration. Go to KDE, then System,
the Login Manager. There should be a tab called Sessions. At the
bottom, there should be a section called Session Types. Manually add
Gnome and KDE back to the list. Capitalization is important so it
must be exactly Gnome and KDE (without the quotes of course).

One thing you might try if you want to know what is or isn't on your hard
drive is: 'whereis' . Locates the binary, source, and manual page files
for a command. Or if you like the GUI way, Kpackage has the find file
option. But if the file you're searching for is installed from tarball
kpackage won't find it because the rpm-database consists of info about
installed rpms only.

becoz the NIC was trying to connect with a 100 speed while the line can only
handle 10, thats why i was getting disconnected too often. He said he didnt
know how to force the card to connect with 10 under linux, so he offered me a
new IP ( without paying for it though :)

I posted another question on the list asking if I can force the card to
connect with 10 speed,

Isnt there a way to concet both PCs while them having the 2 IP's ? I really
liked the idea coz back then my w2k machine had to get off the net whenever I
needed to take my notebook ( the linux machine ) with me to school ( which
used to piss off my 4 years old son as he couldnt surf pbskids.org while I

I just need them to be on the same LAN so that i can share the printer and

I've got both a usb and a ps/2 mouse working...
Try this:
In your XF86Config-4 file, go to the InputDevice section
It should say something like:

Section InputDevice
 Identifier Mouse1
 Driver mouse
 Option Protocol IMPS/2
 Option Device /dev/psaux
 Option ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection

Now add another section below it that says:

Section InputDevice
 Identifier Mouse2
 Driver mouse
 Option Protocol IMPS/2
 Option Device /dev/usbmouse
 Option ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection

Then at the very bottom of the file you should see:
Section ServerLayout
 Identifier layout1
 Screen screen1
 InputDevice Mouse1 CorePointer
 InputDevice Keyboard1 CoreKeyboard
EndSection

Add this line right below the Mouse1 line:
 InputDevice Mouse2 SendCoreEvents

Restart your X server and you should be in business.

 John

Well this depends on which browser you are using.
If it is konqueror clicking on a download will normally open the dialogue
saying 'Save Open or Cancel'
'Save' will save the file to your hard drive while 'Open' will open the file
using the application associated with that file suffix defined in KDE
ControlCentreFile BrowsingFile Associations
If the application for that file type is 'embedded file viewer' then it will
do as you describe and show the file contents in the konqueror window.

It is real easy to alter the file associations and use a different
application to handle that file type.

IF you are not using konqueror of course, then everything I have just written
is wrong ;-)

Spoke too soon, sorry. The problem is still there in 0.21.

Here's what I think is happening: In /usr/msec/perm.4, which
presumably is the permissions msec is supposed to set (mask?)
at security level 4, the following lines appear (among others):
  /home/root.adm751
  /home/* current 700

This should mean (I think) that /home should be owned by root, have
group adm, and have permissions rwxr-x--x, whereas everything *in*
/home should have its current owner and group, and permissions rwx--.

But instead the * is resolved as including the /home directory
itself, and its permissions get reset to rwx--.

I changed the /home/* line to 711, and it now seems to avoid
locking me out of my home directory, but obviously it's not
doing just what it's supposed to be doing.

I am really surprised that no one else seems to have found this
bug. The only relevant thing I can think of that's different about
my system is that I have /home mounted from its own partition, but
that must be very common.

English : overwhelmed, Danish : overvældet.

In danish (and the other nordic dialects) vælde means power force
mighty. The word is often used in context with the ocean - of which we have
plenty here. A huge amount of the nordic languages was absorbed into english
around 900 - 1200 when most of Britain was under danelaw. Reading
Shakespeare illustrates this well.

And to add to your vocabulary : in danish a sjuft is a villain, a crook, a
criminal. Accordingly, a notorious software-company here is called

I am using Mandrake Linux 8.0 with two IDE hard drives in my system. I
created a partition on the second hard drive and then copied a partition from
the first drive over to the second drive and it significantly increased in
size.

More details: I use ext2 for my hard drive partitions. I used `tar clf - /

second partition with blocking factors of 1024, 2048, and 4096.

With a blocking factor of 1024, the second partition (/dev/hdd5) ran out of

Does anyone have any ideas?

No matter how the parasites in the legal profession that are on retainer to a

that company does not own the word Windows. The thing that astounds me (and
a few other 'inhabitants' of this and other mailing lists I have no doubt) is
the defensiveness of some people when an admittedly cheap shot is directed

The entire point of the Open Source movement is choice and freedom. Use what

A signature that isn't attached to a message directed at yourself is no
excuse to deride someone for expressing an opinion. You're welcome to ask

Try to open a word doc file received as an attachment with the Open in
StarOffice dialog - crash! Try to open a word doc in the same way from
Konq - crash. Open SO6, then use the File Open on the same docs - no
 problem.

It may not be faultless, but used this way it looks pretty good to me so
far. Hopefully Sun and/or Mandrake will make the open with way of
doing things work soon. Could actually be a Mandrake issue I guess.

I am using the OpenOffice version of StarOffice. I have not had any problems
with it. I open Micorosoft documents (Word, Excell), edit them and save them
in those formats without any problem.

[newbie] Kmail problems

2002-05-02 Thread Mike Larson

In Kmail under LM 8.2, when attempting to fill in the To:, CC:, or BCC fields, I get
an error message the moment I begin to type an email address. The error box header is
File Error and says Could not load the file. Clicking OK gives another box saying
Kmail crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV). Clicking Close on that error box
causes it and Kmail to close down.

Any ideas? Kmail was working OK before.

Mike

 Dear All,

Some months ago I asked about a programming app for Linux that was simple and
easy to learn and some of you gave me a name of one that I just cannot
remember. It was something like Enterprise? but I am sure it was not the Java
Enterprise. Maybe it was a different name than that. It was around December,
of 2001 that I asked for this I believe. The archives do not seem to go back
that far for searching. Does anyone know what program this could have been?
Sorry to have such sketchy info about it. Thanks for any help.

there is no confirmation request needed or asked for when unsubing from

On the webpage when I try to unsub. it says it will send a

BTW: Did you get my email from Tue?

Just send a message to

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

and spoof the header by changing your email address, then the message
body should be

set newbie nomail

That won't require a confirmation and is the next best thing to signing off.

Remember to change your email identity back afterwards.

[newbie] Fluxbox and Mandrake 8.1

2002-05-02 Thread Kirtis Bakalarczyk

I have a small problem that hopefully will have a small answer...

I'm currently using fluxbox and i'd like to be able to use all those nifty
dockable apps that go into the slit and as far as i can tell, the way to do
that is to add a line into my .xinitrc file, but unfortunately mandrake sets
up it's window managers using a file in /etc/X11/wmsession.d (this is my
understanding of it anyway) Now when i add my app of choice to the end of
the fluxbox file (with the -w option by the way) nothing happens when i
restart (the computer, X, and fluxbox).

So my problem, as you may have guessed, is how to get those apps to start up
automatically without using a .xinitrc! (they do work, BTW. I know this
because i started them from the command line; i'd just like to not have to
start them manually)

And to further complicate matters, the last time i tried to generate an
.xinitrc file i ended up have to Alt-Ctrl-1 over to a different console and
delete the file because it locked up X. So i'm a little hesitant to try it
again.

A little help?

Not quite. Back in the 18th and 19th centuries there was the East India

was only absorbed into the British Empire after a mutiny of its native
soldiers resutled in unspeakable carnage. Presumably the moral is that
Microsoft should merge with the American government to create MSUSA.

Well, someone who cannot post to the list because his ISP is out picking
daisies and not supplying reverse resolution sent me a missive pointing
out that no one buys Windows. It is a license one buys, nothing more.
A license to use software according to the terms and proscriptions of
the owner, one Microsoft Corporation.

In other words they can put whatever into the license agreement and if
you disagree, your alternative is not to use the license. You must
agree to the terms to use the license. There is no legal recourse. The
only hint of a possible recourse stems from the classification of the
owner as a monopoly, and that classification will vanish as soon as it
loses significant market share.

And if there is reason for it to lose said market share, it will not
likely recover said share any time soon or likely ever, a byproduct of
the chicanery used to place the corporation where it is is that many
people are disgusted but shrug and use the products out of a feeling of
powerlessness.
