The nvidia driver installer did its thing perfectly and it all worked

I'm not sure about your setup, but here, using cable-modem service, there is
no gateway statement in my network file. In fact, I don't think it would work
until I removed it.

(I did have it pointed at my hardware routers' ip address)

Sorry, Marc, Walt's right, Xine is the way to go, and since this isn't Widows
land, that uninstall/install trick isn't going to work.

You need to set up Xine properly to use the DVD codecs.

I have xine-flac, libxine1, xine-aa, xine-arts, xine-dxr3, xine-esd,
xine-faad, xine-plugins, xine-ui, xine-win32, libdvdcontrol9, libdvdcss2,
libdvdnav0, libdvdread3, libdvdread-utils installed.

For me DVDs work just fine in Xine, you just need to tell it where the DVD
drive is, and have most, or all of the above installed. Personally, I have
not tried to figure out exactly what is the minimum set of what I need to
watch DVDs, I just load the whole banana up and take it for a spin.

That's the big unfair thing about DVDs and Linux, that it is not legal for us
to use any program to decode DVDs other than the one built by the licensed
distributors and they haven't released a version for linux. So our hacked
together programs can't be legally preconfigured for us, and we have to
upload the stuff from overseas.

Piddle.

I don't think there is a problem with my ISP as I never had this kind of
problem with this computer (same hardware, same software) prior to
reinstalling it yesterday and I am using the same ISP account with my
laptop. I probably didn't install Mandrake the exact same way as before and
it failed to configure something. I still think it's got something to do

Note as well that DrakConnect doesn't even see the active internet

Dave, go into configuration>configure your desktop>Session Manager and check
the restore manually saved session. Then close everything you don't want to

check Restore previous session so that you don't get any residual apps

This is the loopback interface, and could be your problem. This entry is
added by the tmdns service. If you are running a single box with no network,
using dial-up for Internet, this could be your problem. Try removing the
tmdns package and seeing if that helps.

tmdns provides dns services on small networks without a dhcp or dns server.
if you are a single box and using dial-up then you don't need it, since
/etc/hosts will always be used for local name resolution anyway.

Look also at the system => drakxservices in Mandrake Control Center and make

In addition to the "whois" suggested by others, you
may want to look at the tools included with most DNS
packages. Some of them can be quite helpful.

One problem you may encounter is that if someone surfs
to my_website.com, and you capture the IP address, and
then do a look-up, you may find out that the IP
address points to virtual_host.net, and not
my_website.com Same thing with tracking dial-in
accounts, right now the person connected to
192.168.100.1 may not be the same person 10 minutes
from now, while the broadband connections tend to
maintain the IP address for a longer period of time,
they are still dynamic by nature.

As Philip suggested, I would force the Nvidia installer to reinstall and
rebuild the kernel module. When you move to a new kernel, even if it is just
a patch, you need to rebuild the nvidia module. If you want to test this,
change your XF86Config-4 back to the nv driver and comment out glx. If X
loads, then you know that is the problem and you just need to force the
nvidia installer to reinstall again.

There are two - scribus and libscribus IIRC, and I'm sure
they're on the download CD's.

When you go to http://www.rpmfind.net/ and search for scribus, you get
21 rpm's. Using urpmi is easier though, because it takes care of all
dependencies.

That means you cannot recover a situation in XP at all.
Backups come in many guises but the only true backup is to external media.
That way, come what may, it's recoverable.
Second best is a backup to another partition on the same drive, or
another drive.
Backup method can be byt by byte + compression to another file on a spare
partition or external media.
Or using a drive image programme, which is what I prefer to use. I create
an image file which I write to CD for restore purposes.

Either way , I would not advise messing with additional OS's installs
until you
have adequate means of restore. Not unless you can afford to loose XP.

But if this works maybe an 7 or 8GB partition fat32 would serve as a backup from linux say tar the entire NTFS partiton zip it and store in the fat32.

OK, but what if you loose your Hard drive?
Better to write to CD and be covered.
Once you have adequate, preferably external, backup and restore facilities,
you can partition your hard drive and begin playing with Mandrake installs.

Instead of symlinks you could create a file like this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] source]$ cat /etc/profile.d/java.sh

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_03/jre

As I remember it you should put the jar _file_ in the classpath
and execute like this
CLASSPATH=path/to/Application.jar
java -jar Application.jar

IIRC you could rightclick on the eyes and then opt for "stop" and otherwise
there's always "xkill" to the rescue;)

"xkill" can be done from the commandline in a xterminal or from the
,, menu.

Good luck,

If you rightclick in the bar at the top of a window and select "To Desktop"
you can select if that window is shown on all desktops, or send it to a
specific desktop.
When you have a window just as you want it right click in the bar and select
"Advanced>StoreWindow Settings", then it will always appear just like that and
on that specific desktop.

Hi ...

Just discovered this myself, so I'm please to have an opportunity to share it!

From the K Menu go to
Configuration - KDE - LookNFeel - Taskbar

Under Taskbar there's a checkbox that reads

Show windows from all desktops

Uncheck that and you will only see the open apps/files/etc for each desktop
you're actually "in" ... (So when you go to your mp3 desktop, then you'll see
your mp3 player, etc, but not the Open Office apps/files ... )

Hope this helps ...

In the Taskbar's KDE Control Module, you can uncheck the "Show windows from
all desktops" checkbox, then only the current desktop's windows will be shown
in the Kicker taskbar.

No. Your desktop icons cannot change across desktops, AFAIK. Only your
backgrounds.

> I hope my question makes sense. If it does not, can somebody please explain
> again why there are four desktops in KDE.
Screen space. Imagine you have OpenOffice.org, a web browser, mail client, IRC
client, development environment, a console, a file browser, etc. etc.
Think of the horrible pain it would be to switch between those windows the
whole time :D
Then think how cool it would be if you could sort of categorise your windows
according to desktops, thus, XMMS on desktop 1, web applications on desktop
2, office on 3, development on 4, etc.
Which is why we have 4 virtual desktops. At least, that's why I have 'em.

Hope this answers your questions.

[newbie] Four Desktops

2004-02-29 Thread Weiers Coetser
Hi...

This is my third request for assitance and I've appreciated the input that
I've received every time.

I don't know if the following scenario is a posible one:

Lets say I've divided my work into four categories. I would like to use one
of the four KDE desktops for each of these four categories.

At the moment I find that when I place a folder on my desktop it shows up on
all four the desktops. This gives my desktop a very cluttered feel and I
don't really see the purpose of having four desktops in this case.

The same is true when I open several programmes. If I opened Open Office
Writer on Desktop one, I can still see the bar for that document at the
bottom, even if I am on Desktop two. If I have six or seven documents open
at the same time, I find it difficult to navigate my way between the
documents.

Is it possible to change a setting that each of the four desktops function
almost independently. Eg. I can put all my MP3 files on Desktop 1 and run
the MP3 Player from there. Then I place all my written documents on desktop
two, and all my spreadsheets on desktop three.

I hope my question makes sense. If it does not, can somebody please explain
again why there are four desktops in KDE.

Greetings
Weiers

It is not spamassassin setting the lock file. it is procmail

Any procmail recipe that starts with
:0

will not create a lock file. You do not need a lock file when piping your
mails through spamassassin. The lock file is there simply to stop procmail
and kmail trying to use a mail spool file at the same time. You only need to
set it when actually writing to a mail spool file.

A procmail recipe starting with
:0 :
will use the default lockfile.
The default lockfile name will be the same as the mail folder used with a
leading '.'

A procmail recipe in the form
:0 : lockfilename
will use the named lock file.

Hope that is clearer

Interesting. This looks like your problem right here. This is the file that
is supposed to holds the configuration settings so that the interface can be
brought back up at boot.

**
[EMAIL PROTECTED] internet]# cat /etc/modules.conf

alias eth0 ne2k-pci

You are correctly getting an alias set up for your network adapter, so we just
have to get you a ifcfg-eth0 file.

This file should be written out by drakconnect, and I have no explanation why
it is not. We could get one setup manually if we know a little more about
your network setup. Are you on cable/DSL, do you have a router, other
machines on the network, etc. What is addressing scheme you are using, dhcp
or static.

You could try something like this if you have a dhcp server:

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
DHCP_TIMEOUT=5
ONBOOT=yes
MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=no
NEEDHOSTNAME=no
--
/g

It's configured system wide. And as I use procmail and kmail, the spamassassin
insist on putting the lock file at ~/Mail/ (kmail directory).

How can I change this? I have set two directories for spamassassin
~/.spamassassin (with the dot) and ~/spamassassin (no dot).

The user_prefs is read correct as well as my sa-learm --spam/--ham and
white_list.

Any help?

Do you have an entry called 'scanner' in your /etc/modules file? Mandrake did
not add this (for me anyway) and my HP scanner would not work without it.

My hard drive is only 40 gb, and being that Linux is just my toy(though I
rarely use Windows unless I have a problem with Linux), it has only 15 GB. Of
course if I ever need more space I can always resize without losing data...I
think. I've never actually tried resizing a Linux partition. Will data loss
occur?

I've always played safe and created a /home partition first. Nowadays
I create /boot and sometimes /usr, but they are less important,
although /boot is good if you use more than one distro

Anne,
I know I'm a different Marc, but I'll answer you anyway =). Yes, this does
give you three partitions. It makes the /home a little bigger than the /, and
the swap is the right size. It's all proportional to the space it has. But
sometimes I think it doesn't mount the /home correctly...did that to me

If you are confident you have backup facilities for windows, then you
don't really
have much to worry about. You can, and should install Mandrake from the
installation
discs so it matters not how many times you have to restart till you get
it right.

I just wanted to make sure you can really can restore windows if you do
mess up.
I know XP doesn't always come with good backup facilities these days unless
you have the professional install discs MS doesn't hand out XP install
discs
any more to the likes of PC owners. So if all else fails it's important tobe
able to restore windblows easy . If the Computer came with OEM backup
then use them, if not make your own backup with a drive image programme
first. A good backup programme should restore XP in 20 minutes.

As for the size of partition, that is entirely your own decision, only you
know how much space XP needs. I wouldn't waste 25 gigs on windblows
myself, I'd shring it down to 5or6 gigs, and a spare partition in NTFS
for important things you don't want to loose, but that is my way of
doing things, so whatever you want to do is the right decision for you.
As far as linux /swap partition is concerned , if has nothing
to do with windows at all , windows uses a vitual memory
based on a file with predetemined limits. Linux uses
a spare partition it calls a /swap partition and this should be
about 1 1/2/2 times physical memory.

I understand your concern but I can assure you that Mandrake has done a
Fantastic job on the installer, infact it is one of the things that makes
mandrake really stand out from the rest of the crowd. If I remember correctly
back about 6 months ago a guy named civileme did most of the coordinating
work with the team that developed the installer for 9.2 and he went to great
efforts to get it right.

Well I can tell you what I have done in the past and I think that you will
find it easy. Forget about the expert mode!!! just insert CD1 immediately
after defragmenting and do the standard installation and accept the defalt
settings after reading through the options, you may gave to select a
different mouse type or something simple like that. NOTHING will be
permanently written to the hard drive until you finish disk partitioning so
don't worry yet. When you get to disk partitioning select custom disk
partitioning it should take you to a screen with a graphical representation
of your partitions and you should see 1 large partition that is all blue that
is labeled windows. Just click on it and some options should appear on the
left of the screen, select resize. then just use the GUI to shrink the
windows partition as much as you like, about half the original size is
probably OK. Next you should see a new graphical representation of your
partition table. Half of it will be blue and labled windows and the other
half will be a sort of gray color with no label. Click on the gray part and
then near the bottom of the screen click on auto allocate. Mandrake will
divide the gray part into 3 partitions, root, swap and home next click on the
done tab near the bottom of the screen and proceed with the rest of the
installation.

You can also have a look at the demo at
http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/demos/Demo/Mandrake9.0/Install/
it is for the old 9.0 release but the installation process is still almost the
same. I hope that this helps.

I should also note that the mirrors can be screwed up so make sure your
sources are good ones, and maybe consider a contrib2 and main2 source (to
double the chances of being able to download everything, the mirrors are
donated to Mandrake) and this weekend, it has not been working for me.
altho it has in the past.

remember, cooker is the trial version, so some stuff may work better, and some
may not work at all.. and since it is a 'trial' version, try it, and let the
cooker list know what happens...

The Mandrake Firewall GUI is pretty simple and often screws up configuration.

A common mistake the GUI makes is to get the interface connected to the
internet wrong. It will assume eth0 is connected to the net.

Take a look at the file /etc/shorewall/interfaces

At the bottom you will see something like :-

net eth0detect
loc eth1detect (it may be called masq instead of loc)

If you connect via DSL (ppp over atm), or dial up, then replace eth0 with ppp0

If you are not doing internet connection sharing then you do not need the
second line.

Then restart shorewall with
'shorewall restart' in a root terminal

No spare computer. The last time I screwed up and had to reinstall it took
4 days. Mostly fighting those nasty virisus that sneek in while I'm
downloading the norton virus definations. I dont mind reinstalling windows

Hi All

I came in on the tail of a thread about upgrading last week, so I
kept my keyboard out of reach.

Curiosity is killing me though.

Can I upgrade to 10.whatever is now, by adding cooker to my urpmi
sources and

 'urpmi.update -a --wget && urpmi -v --auto-select --wget'.

Seems way too simple to be true. This is Linux, after all.

Your mail settings are stores in ~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc
It looks like you did not include hidden files in your backup.

A convenient way to do a backup to CD or ftp/ssh is drakbackup
It is in the drakxtools RPM (get the latest version of the updates mirror)

The safest bet is to leave all boxes unchecked, unless you have a web server
running. This will set defaults to minimize your risk. You can fine tune it

I do understand the anxiety, Hoyt, but there really is no danger. As
long as you don't actually tell it to shrink the partition or
whatever you will be able to abort and nothing will have changed.
What happens if you do tell it to carry on is that it warns you that
it is going to write the new partition table. Allowing that is when
you are committed, with no way back.

Take a look, go into expert mode when it gets to partitioning, take a
good look, then exit. Give yourself time to think about what you

Hi all,

this is my first questions here, but many of discussions here solved many of
mine problems.

I've download and installed j2sdk rpm from sun. It installed succesfully. Even
in mozilla 1.6 i can run applets with the symlink. But im trying to run .jar
java applications. I've done these to set PATH and CLASSPATH in Konsole for
j2sdk:
PATH=$PATH:/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_03/bin
CLASSPATH=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_03/lib

When I try to run any .jar like:
java Application.jar
I receive these error in .jar file:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError

Am I doing everything ok? Is there any way easier to set PATH and CLASSPATH?

Thanks for any help!

Is it true that one should not worry about virus when using Linux?
It depends on whether you are running a server or a workstation. A Linux
workstation is immune to Windows viruses (NOT "virii"!) and while there
have been a few worms made to target Linux, the average workstation user
need not lose any sleep over them - but use the Mandrake update feature
and get the security patches, just in case.

If you are running a server, especially if a number of users have access
to it, you should probably run anti-virus software, since although a MS
virus cannot get at the workings of your server, a user could upload,
say, an infected Word document or naught .exe file, and another user
could then download it. There was an informative thread on Linux AV
software a little while ago - check the archives.

I would think so. I've never had to do it, and I'm speaking from
memory, but I do always use the expert mode, as it gives you more
flexibility. You can afford to go in an look for yourself, because
nothing has been written to disk from the installation at that point.
Until you actually tell it to shrink the partition or whatever you
can back out without any risk. HTH

Ok I just went and booted CD1 for 9.2 install. There is a screen with two
options Install and F1 for help. Clicking on install goes directely to
install this is what I normally use. So I pushed F1. And got an install
help screen it lists 4 options vgalo, text, linux, expert also a little
later rescue. There is no mention of shrinking the windows partition
anywhere on the page, there is an option for another help page F2. Pushed
F2 and find 2 aditional options vgahi, vga16, again no mention of shrinking
windows.
I dont use expert because it is likely dangerous, at lease for me, since I
dont have a clue as to what options I will be asked to select.

See the problem.

Possibly the biggest help for tough hardware problems is to google your
question, in this case I would first try "scanner 4400C linux", which scores
410 hits. Including many from the sane-devel list, which is a good thing, as
sane is the program that allows scanners to run under linux.

I also see that it is a USB scanner. Do you have the USB subsection running
properly? Maybe the scanner is being detected, but not set up properly.

Linux uses SANE for drivers.
http://www.sane-project.org/
take a look and see if it's supported.
If it is supported, come back
with more info about your OS and equipement.

After *way* too many hours, I have been able to get the ATI driver to run the screen
in its native 1280x800 mode. I had to rebuild the ATI-supplied driver. The to
configure, I had to run the generic X configuration instead of ATI's fglrxconfig
program. The latter will only allow you to choose standard resolutions, i.e.,
1024x768. I've only tried this in 32-bit Linux so far. I'm not hopeful about 64-bit
Linux, as ATI delivers a precompiled static 32-bit lib that is not rebuilt when you
rebuild the driver.

[newbie] HP Scanner 4400C

2004-02-29 Thread Adrian Earnshaw
Title: Message

Hi to
all,

I have just started
to use Linux and have chosen Mandrake as my first real foray into the Linux
world. I was wondering if anyone has come across any drivers for the HP Scanner
4400C as it is the only hardware I can't get to work. It says that it is
supported under the hardware page but no program seems to be able to connect to
it. At the moment I am using 9.1 but starting the download of 9.2
eventually!

Regards

Adrian
