[newbie] upgrading nvidia kernel in a safe way...
Hello, At last, I've come around to upgrading my kernel, after upgrading all the other applications to 9.2 when it came out. I got a fright when mandrake wouldn't boot (actually, it did but X didn't start, which comes to the same for me). My lilo.conf was a bit mixed up, but I managed to boot with the rescue cd and modify it, so that I can now boot with the old kernel. From searching the archives of this list and doing a lot of reading, I know that kernel images are installed side by side. So now I have: vmlinuz-2.4.22-21mdk vmlinuz-2.4.21-0.13mdk My question concern the nvidia driver. I have downloaded from the club: NVIDIA_kernel-2.4.22.21mdk-4496-2.2.92mdk.i586.rpm but I am hesitating to urpmi it, because I don't understand how it would affect my current setup. If after installing the nvidia driver, there are any problem, I need to be able to boot with the old kernel (the one I am using now). I don't want to be in a situation where the new one doesn't work and the old one got broken because of conflicting nvidia driver version. I am not sure I express myself clearly here: Are the different versions of nvidia kernel modules installed side by side, like the kernel is? If I install the new module to use with the new kernel, will I still be able to use the old nvidia driver with the old kernel (a configuration that I know is working now)? If things go wrong, what would I then need to do in order to be able to boot and use X (my lifeline to get help...).? Lilo.conf is now setup to boot with the old kernel by default, but an option for the new kernel exists too. How should I modify it to select specific versions of nvidia drivers for each kernel image? thanks, Augustin -- UNIX was not designed to stop you from doing stupid things, because that would also stop you from doing clever things. -- Doug Gwyn Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? If you install the Nvidia RPM while booted into that particular kernel version, you should be fine. It will install the Nvidia module/driver into the appropriate kernel, leaving the other alone. Thank you, Joe, I'd like to make sure I understand properly what you mean: I am using current_kernel with current_nvidia_driver. I have installed new_kernel and downloaded new_nvidia_driver. X won't start with new_kernel, so I am using current_kernel. you mean that I should boot with new_kernel, and from the console do urpmi new_nvidia_driver. I should NOT do it from current_kernel. After having done so, I will still have the choice in LILO to boot EITHER with current_kernel and current_nvidia_driver OR with new_kernel with the newly installed new_nvidia_driver. Thus, even if the new_nvidia rpm is badly corrupted, I WILL still have a working X running or current_kernel. Is this what you mean? (I used to try things before asking questions, and I have badly trashed my system in the past, leaving me unconnected and helpless. This time, I prefer to make sure that I will do things correctly). thanks, Augustin. -- In the news: Microsoft memo: Linux fight backfiring The software giant's efforts to mock open-source software such as Linux have worked against the company Read more: http://news.zdnet.co.uk/story/0,,t269-s2125524,00.html Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? If the existing XFRee86Config-4 says nvidia and you've got X going, means you installed the kernel-drivers and are using them. If it doesn't work you can always use nv which doesn't require extra drivers. Good luck, HarM Yes, I just tried and effectively, with nv, X now starts with both kernel images but tuxracer and other 3D apps won't run anymore. [newbie] needed paid support
Hello, Despite my best efforts at doing some research and asking questions, I still failed to setup a few important things on my computer. I am getting short of time too. I have therefore purchased some support units and created a few incidents at mandrake expert. I need some expert support on the two following items: 73630 winmodem setup 73674 networking two mandrake computers Later on, I will also need a real expert on file system to recover a badly corrupted FS. I know many of you, great girls and guys, are happy to provide support for free but I currently prefer the mandrake expert format, where I can have all my incidents stored in one place and the access to experts dedicated to see me through one problem. Even though I am not as wealthy as Bill Gates or Linus Torvald, I still have more money than time, so if some of you believe that the standard price for one incident is not a fair retribution for your help on one topic, let me know *beforehand* how much you'd think is fair and we can arrange a payment through paypal or something else. That's especially true for FS problem: the solution may be a long pain-staking process that can span many hours over many weeks. Write to me if you're really knowledgeable or better: pick up the aforementionned mandrake expert incidents. thanks, Anguo -- You say that I'm a dreamer. I say you're a non-believer. [newbie] home network Mandrake howto
Hello, I have not been able to find a simple step by step howto for home networking. So far, I have absolutely no experience in networking, or any IP address stuff. Right now, I have a friend's computer at home and I would like 1- to share the internet connection with my own computer's adsl. 2- be able to do file transfer from one computer to the other. To start with, I am not sure I have all the required hardware: I don't have a hub or (obviously) a dedicated server. My computer has two ethernet cards, one being connected to my adsl modem. My friend's computer also has an ethernet card. What I did is connect my second ethernet card to the second computer's card directly, with a cable running from one card to the other. I am not sure that's the proper way to do it... all the beautiful graphs I find on the internet picture little box, whatever it's called, that sits between the two computers. I don't have that and I don't know if it is possible to connect the two computers the way I did. Next, I tried to run the configuration wizard in MCC on both computers, on mine to share the internet connection, and on my friend computer to set a LAN connection, but so far no good. I am not sure what I am missing and I can't find a mandrake specific step by step howto. I created this page here: http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/HomeNetworking You can write your reply directly there, so that other can benefit from your answers, or to the list and I'll put everything there afterwards. thanks Augustin -- Linux. [newbie] Loosing Chinese users?
This was posted by jeff at MandrakeClub. Does anyone knows more about it??? If this is the last one before 9.2 final, I am sure Mandrake will lose most users from Taiwan and Hong Kong. They will switch to RedHat for much better Chinese support. 9.2rc1 and rc2 are not able to show Traditional Chinese at all because only Simplied Chinese fonts are installed. I have already filed this issue in Bugzilla and I hope there is another release candidate to fix this. About 2 years ago, Mandrake was much better in Chinese support in comparison with other distributions. However, RedHat have surpassed Mandrake in Chinese support nowadays that has made many Traditional Chinese user switch to RedHat. Less and less people have took part in forum on Mandrake. The English version of Red Flag sucked--we're even. ;-) Miark Even with whom FYI, Red Flag is a communist chinese distribution. The commies use simplified chinese, which I read work well in 9.2rc2. So you may have got an broken-English Red Flag from them, but they get a good simplified chinese Mandrake. If you read better the original post, you'd know that what's lacking is traditional chinese used in HK and in the other China, the free and democratic one (republic of china) in Taiwan. - Original Message - From: Derek Jennings [EMAIL PROTECTED] If in the future you get 'locked out' in any way. Avoid pressing that reset button. The graceful way to restart a Linux system is described here http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/doc/82/en/ref.html/ts-system-freeze.html Secondly you will have much less risk of corrupting your drive with an unexpected reset if you use one of the journalling file systems like, Ext3, Reiserfs or XFS If your partitions are currently Ext2 you can upgrade them to Ext3 without damaging your data. derek Thanks a lot derek, I'll investigate both points before bed time, when i get back from work tonight. [newbie] single user boot: i still cannot change root password
I upgraded the security level of my mandrake 8.2 box from the lowest to the intermediate (3) level. Now I don't have access to any user, including root, because my passwords are all expired. I couldn't su to root and couldn't shutdown the box (ctr+alt+del didn't respond). I was stuck with the graphical login and had to press the reset button :-( , messing the filesystem... I googled the internet to find out how to boot as a single user and change the root password. Here is what I did. lilo linux runlevel 1 or lilo linux single didn't help. The file system is messed (du to hard reset) and I am faced with the alternative of either supplying the root password (which I don't have) for maintenance or press ctr+D to do a normal start, which brings me back to the stallemate above... (btw, is there any difference between: linux runlevel 1 , linux init 1 and linux single ?) I then tried: lilo linux init=/bin/sh rw which gave me an init prompt. I typed su and without asking for a password, I got the root prompt: [root@(none) / ]# I located the passwd command in the filesystem and tried it: # ./passwd root ./passwd: permission denied. I have the same result at the init or root prompt. I then tried to modify the /etc/passwd file to erase the root pass (as I read I could do when I googled the web). vi didn't work but I found a vim-minimum in the filesystem and used it to vi /etc/passwd but the file was read only and any attempt to write it failed. Another note that might be important: the /usr filesystem was not mounted and I didn't mount it because the filesystem got corrupted and trying to mount it would have brought plenty of error messages and I wouldn't have known what to do). So: I lost my root password (not that I forgot it but it unexpectedly got expired!) I could login and su to root as a single user but still could do anything about it! Beside getting me back my user and root password, I'd like to know if it is possible to switch back to a lower security level... I cannot manage my box at a higher level Thanks, Anguo Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] Where's my E: drive (after reinstalling Mandrake).
I have three partitions under win98: hda1 (c:) hda9 (d:) and hda4 (e:) (if you want to know why I still have windows, you may read this: http://www.mandrakeexpert.com/index1.php?tab=paidact=viewincident=7114w=0 PHPSESSID=db1ebacda45a13eb67211228ecf142f8 ) I had to reinstall Mandrake 8.1 and since then, windows won't read hda4 (e:) I run linux/fdisk and found out that the type for hda4 was set to hidden FAT32. Still with fdisk, I t to change the type from 1b to b (FAT32), w to write the table and exited. If I reboot to linux, the changes are still there. But when I boot win98, the partition e: is still not available... When I go back to linux after having booted win98, I notice that the partition table has changed back: the type for hda4 has come back from b to 1b. I have no such problems for my c: and d: drive, hda1 and hda9. Since I reinstalled mandrake, windows seems to be willing to hide hda4 from me. It's funny because the content is visible from linux. What's the point in having a windows partition visible only from linux and not from windows itself. Does anyone have a clue? thanks, Anguo Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I'll look more for the answer but if anyone knows where the problem is and could give me some pointers, I'd be grateful. thanks, Anguo #df -h FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/hda2 587M 133M 424M 24% / none 125M 0 124M 0% /dev/shm /dev/hda1 1.7G 1.5G 236M 87% /mnt/windows /dev/hda4 2.9G 4.0k 2.7G 1% /redhat /dev/hda6 5.8G 1.6G 3.9G 29% /usr #fdisk -l Disk /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 3649 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes Device BootStart EndBlocks Id System /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 * 1 216 1734988+ b Win95 FAT32 /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part2 217 292610470 83 Linux /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part3 293 2846 20515005 5 Extended /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part4 2202 2583 3068415 83 Linux /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part5 293 342401593+ 82 Linux swap /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part6 343 1106 6136798+ 83 Linux /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part7 ?224061112815 1253901899 29 Unknown #fdisk -l -u Disk /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 3649 cylinders Units = sectors of 1 * 512 bytes Device BootStart EndBlocks Id System /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 *63 3470039 1734988+ b Win95 FAT32 /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part2 3470040 4690979610470 83 Linux /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part3 4690980 45720989 20515005 5 Extended /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part4 35359065 41495894 3068415 83 Linux /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part5 4691043 5494229401593+ 82 Linux swap /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part6 5494293 17767889 6136798+ 83 Linux /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part7 ? -695433982 1812369815 1253901899 29 Unknown Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] booting in console mode
- Original Message - ±H¥óªÌ: Anuerin G. Diaz [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have been looking in the archives for the answer to the first question below, but so far, I haven't found the solution. I am sure that the answer is simple. Do you know it? I dual boot win98 + Mandrake 8.1 Questions: 1- How can I use the boot disk to boot into the console mode rather than the graphical login? This is the first and most important question for now... does this mean that you can now enter your system? precisely not. I can't. the graphical login is a hindrance right now because it won't start any window manager and it won't allow me to reboot under console mode (there was such an option with 8.0 but apparently, it's gone under 8.1) If I can't find a way to boot into linux, the only other solution will be for me to reinstall. I could do that. It'll take only time. But I'd rather use the opportunity to learn new skills. 2- Where can I then see the logs of the booting sequences. i vaguely remember that its in a file named dmesg (somewhere in /var) and that you can display it by invoking dmesg. Thanks, I'll look at that once I can boot. does this mean that you can now enter your system? as for the chinese stuff, somebody (look for iain if im not mistaken) in the sylpheed [sylpheed.good-day.net] mailing list (he works in hongkong or somewhere near) who has written an informative guide (albeit a work in progress) about how he did configure his linux system to display chinese characters. I was hoping that I could apply it to display japanese characters but nothing so far. Chinese is 80% ok... Last time I could boot Linux, it displayed chinese quite properly (even though the font is hard to read). Chinese support has actually improved between 8.0 and 8.1. The xcin chinese input program seems at last to work properly... but it's the 20% missing that prevent me from doing any job in chinese under Linux... like when I input chinese in Kmail, it displays trash... that's why I still use Outlook Express! :-( To come back to my primary question, I'll look a bit more around and in the howtos online, but if I don't find the answer and if nobody is able to help me here, then I'll do a clean install once more. Thanks anyway, :-) Anguo Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] booting in console mode and seeing booting logs to diagnose problem
Ouch! I just saw this: http://www.linux.com/howto/LILO-crash-rescue-HOWTO-1.html#ss1.4 You MUST make emergency boot disk from time to time and whenever you make changes to the partition. Insert a blank floppy which, of course, I didn't do... so the partition table on the boot floppy doens't correspond to the existing one. There isn't much change though.. just one more partition cut out of the empty remaining space on the hard disk... What now? - Original Message - ±H¥óªÌ: Anguo I dual boot win98 + Mandrake 8.1 Questions: 1- How can I use the boot disk to boot into the console mode rather than the graphical login? Problem: KDE or any other window manager won't start anymore. The graphic login only has two options: previous and failsafe, neither of which get anything started. There are quite a few error messages that appear during the machine booting sequence. I'd like to see what they are so that I can solve (with your precious help) whatever problem there is. I recently added a new FAT32 partition using diskdrake and then formated it under win98. I needed the new partitions so that I could install office2000. (I unfortunately still need that because of the lacking chinese support under linux - I still haven't been able to get it working properly). I think part of the problem is related to this (something about too many partitions being mounted...). Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] dual linux distro boot.
I wonder: has anyone ever installed two or more different linux distro on a single hard drive and set lilo to dual/triple/whatever boot? You don't need to tell me how to do it just yet: I have some documentation here that I am gonna read first. Actually the only doc I have is an article by a Simon N goodwin without any web references. A search on google about multilinux or several linux distro installed on the same box didn't give any result. No how-to, no nothing. Just this printed article. The only documentation is about dos + linux dual boot or Windrowse + linux dual boot but not linux + linux dual boot (in my case that would be mandrake as primary OS plus one or both of the two local distro: CLE or Linpus). I will read the win+linux dual boot doc anyway: I guess that most of the info is relevant all the same. I wish to be able the compare different distro at the same time, especially since I don't seem to be able (yet) to properly configure Mandrake so that it does what I want it to do with Chinese. I was thinking that either CLE or Linpus would have better chinese support all around. I will read my doc carfully and plan for success. Meanwhile I was curious about whether anyone else on the list has attempted that before. Did the installation go smoothly? How, in practical terms, do you use this setup for? How do the different distro interact together? Do you need one /home/user/ for each distro, or can you use the same for all? Thanks for any feedback (thanks anyway, even if there isn't any feedback :-D ) Blessings, Anguo Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

I had the same problem as you. On a pentium 120mhz 32mb ram, the install didn't ask for the second cd. I did run mandrake but many applications were missing and software manager wouldn't run on such low resources. On a duron 750mhz 256mb ram, I had no such problem. I guess there's no way around it. It is not the size in kedit that bother me but the size in the little box when I input chinese. I have a 14'' monitor and it really looks small and I haven't yet found a way to increase the font size. It's not yet at the top of my priority list though, so I'll see later about that. - I don't know xcin well, so I don't know whether it supports Unicode or not. - However, from my sense, there is no Unicode character's input method yet. no xcin doesn't support unicode. RedHat uses CLE but I'm not sure about CLE. I think I'll make my computer a dual boot with mandrake and Redhat chinese edition so I'll be able to compare the two as far as chinese/unicode support is concerned... but that isn't at the top of my priority list either... ;-) - In fact, I am struggling with printing Chinese documents under Mandrake 8.0. - I am trying to ask CLE team and people regarding ZH-L10N. - If 8.1 solves this problem, I'll give it a try when I get it. Yes, you might want to wait another two months for the new release or, if you are in a hurry, install the new ghostcript on your current distro. (ask Civileme about what exactly to install). - I want to use Mandrake Linux as the desktop OS. I hope I can consider and - operate - it this way. Re: [newbie] software manager hangs
Hi Mike, Has anyone been able to help you? I am not very familiar with rpm... I have been avoiding to install manually... So I hope someone will be able to give you some advice. As far as software manager is concerned, I had very similar problems... worse actually. This program seems to be a hog and resources hungry because it has to load a bid database so that it can opperate. I first installed mandrake on a pentium 120mhz with 32mb ram... and kde was not so happy about it. Software manager hanged up at the very start, while drawing the first screen. Your 64mb ram do not seem to be much. If I were you, I'd seriously consider upgrading to 128mb ram, possibly 256mb. I now run mandrake on a duron 750mhz with 256mb ram and I am happy! :-D you say you use lnx4win to run mandrake. Does this mean that your mandrake/linux runs under windows??? I believe you loose all benefit of having linux if that's true. Dual boot with linux and windows each having their own partition would be much better. Anyway, go for more memory: windows and kde are very hungry for resources. Either that or run another xwindows gui build for low end computers. hope that helps, Anguo Michael Koundouros banged on their keyboard and produced the following arrangement of letters: - Hi folks, - - I am using mandrake 8.0. Does anyone know what the problem is? - - - I really want to know how to install programs. lately I have been using the - rpm -i command in a shell since I have been having the software manager - problem mentioned above. the problem arises with all the program - dependencies. - - How do I install a program WITHOUT having to find all the dependencies and - their dependencies and so on. I can't but Civileme told me that it wouldn't be a problem with 8.1. Do you still use Micrappysoft? I don't anymore. I don't even have it. As I said I just learned to use sudo and I certainly don't know all the functions and uses of that command. [newbie] It really is that good.
full article here: http://www.canadacomputes.com/v3/story/1,1017,7144,00.html?tag=81sb=79 The final verdict? For the longest time, RedHat 6.0 was my favourite Linux distribution. It wasn't the first one I'd used, but it was the best. I've run innumerable other distributions since then, but none compared to good old RedHat 6.0. Mandrake 7.2, while great, still didn't quite measure up. RedHat 6.0 has been replaced. I've been hammering Mandrake 8.0 for two weeks now and love it. I've had no problems other than the accompanying kernel source not compiling. That's it. Mandrake 8.0 is as close to a flawless Linux distribution as you can get, and I would highly recommend to anyone. Mandrake 8.0, as far as I'm concerned, is now the benchmark against which other distributions will be measured. It really is that good. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Java(Once More)
First I am glad that more knowledgable people like Michael and Sridhar have come forward to help too. Marcia, I am sorry to learn that Java still isn't working. ¦b 2001 ¤C¤ë 13 ¬P´Á¤ 08:04¡AMarcia Waller ¼g¹D: Dear All, My java experience keeps getting worse. Now, when I check for version it says java no such command. you have to run the commands: which java java -version from your home user, not root (why? I don't know). Compare what I get: [root@localhost anguo]# java -version bash: java: command not found [anguo@localhost anguo]$ java -version java version 1.3.0 Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build Blackdown-1.3.0-FCS) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build Blackdown-1.3.0-FCS, mixed mode) I have java jre1.3.1 in /usr/java/jre1.3.1/bin/java. I see it there when I check from console but I cannot get it recognized or plugged in. I went to the installation and running instructions and setup the export path as instructed but nothing is working so far. Should I just uninstall and start over? I see the jre1.3.1 in my /usr file with all of the other files that are supposed to be there. I am totally perplexed. One thing you didn't mention is: did you uninstall your old version of Java as Sridhar suggested? It would help if you could keep a log of everything you're doing so that we (well, they, the more advanced people) have a clue of what's going on. To make sure, did you: 1- uninstall the old java 2- make sure the new is properly installed. (question to my 'linux-elders': how would one make sure that something is properly installed? ) 3- set path according to one or the other method given (which one did you do?) 4- how is you konqueror browser set? (maybe an improper setting may conflict with the java path given. 5- make sure also to keep all the details in your latest email. At most two or three people have been paying attention to this thread since the beginning. This way others may jump in and provide you with the key to solving your problem. You all have offered great suggestions however for some reason nothing has worked. I know this can be resolved somehow. Again I have LM8 which was running the installed jre1.3.1 just fine for awhile then stopped working mysteriously. Are you sure your system was running the jre1.3.1 version and not 1.0.6 Java Version 1.1 you mentionned before? Also, everytime I startup Konqueror I get an error message box that says KDE module error at the top and says cannot find nsplugin.desktop. Does anyone know what this means? your Konqueror seems to be set to use netscape's plugins. Maybe it shouldn't (it doesn't on my box). Let it grab java directly where it is Thanks so much for you help. You're welcome. I am not sure I am helping much, but I'm trying hard to ask the questions that will help others to figure out what the problem really is. Remember that I am a three weeks old linux user. I just happened to have installed java by myself last week. I got some help when I needed some. It's my pleasure to try to provide help too, as and when I can. That's the linux community aspect that I like the most! Anguo

After installing LM8.0, I noticed that most of the 256Mb were used, confirming that I made the right choice, but I also wondered why Linux would precisely use the amount of RAM I had. I was thinking to wait that memory comes cheaper to add two 512Mb bars to have a total of 1300Mb RAM. Would that make the system faster, or would that only be a waste of money? (running on a AMD Duron 750Mhz, that I may upgrade to K7 1.4Mhz sometime next year) I only run typical desktop single user applications (mail, internet...). Anguo P.S. : Even though this list is very busy, I do my best to read all the messages. I learn a lot this way. Thanks to everyone who ask questions (which are never stupid) and thanks to all those who take the time to reply...
