Turbotax Web works just fine. :) I've been using Web-based turbotax
methods for the last few years using linux. One caveat though, I had a
little difficulty getting the browser (konqueror or mozilla0 to
automatically launch acrobat inside the browser window for printing
purposes. I managed somehow to make it work, but most of the time it
would sit there and stare at me, reporting that acrobat was not found
(it is there) but launching it anyway - where its initial splash screen
would come up and then it would go to sleep.

I used TurboTax Deluxe (freebie from American Century Investments) with
Crossover Office 4.0 and it mostly worked ok. Some of the navigation
aids don't work properly, but tax preparation and printing seem fine.

Re: [newbie] no video capture from tv-card

2004-01-04 Thread Linus Drouhard
I had a similar problem (actually several problems). I recently
upgraded from 9.1 to 9.2 and changed my mobo/processor. I wasn't sure
what was causing the problem as everything worked fine with 9.1 and the
old mobo. Anyway, the only way I got my system to work was to upgrade
the kernel to 2.6 and load the latest Alsa drivers. I'm not sure what
finally fixed everything, but now I can record. Good luck.

[newbie] Recording problem with streamer

2003-12-06 Thread Linus Drouhard
I cannot record with streamer since I upgraded my mobo and processor. I
now have an ASUS A7V8X-X with an Athlon XP 2500+ (runs nice). I have
Mandrake 9.2 on it.

Here's the problem, I run the following command

streamer -f mjpeg -t 120 -s 720x480 -r 29.97 -o movie.avi -F stereo -n
ntsc
lav2wav +p movie.avi | mp2enc -o audio.mp2
lav2yuv +p movie.avi | mpeg2enc -o video.m1v
mplex audio.mp2 video.m1v -o movie.mpg

which worked fine on my old mobo and processor. It now starts sound and
streamer just stop. It doesn't record, but hangs on this command. I
can kill streamer, but sound continues. I have to start xawtv and then
stop that to stop the sound.

Here's the output that I get when I kill streamer.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] video]$ recordavi.sh

./recordavi.sh: line 2: 14244 Terminated streamer -f mjpeg

I've tried other recording methods (vcr among others) and everyone of
them seems to get stuck on getting control of the sound device. Sound
works fine with xawtv, xmms, everthing but recording.

Any ideas? I've spent WAY too much time trying to figure this out.

[newbie] Jacked up file system

2003-09-02 Thread Linus Drouhard
I've got a small problem. I haven't completely given up on Windows (unfortunately)
because I can't find a total video editing/dvd burning solution for Linux. Anyway, I
have a partition that I've formatted as fat32. It's about 52 GB. However, I couldn't
access the partition in Linux, except as root. No matter what I did. So...in my
wisdom, I thought that if I got it below 32 GB, it would act normally. I resized it
and everything was fine. I tried to format and mount the remaining 20 GB, but no go.
Wouldn't mount. So I resized the 32 GB partition back to 52 GB. It mounts, but shows
up as 32 GB. Also, I tried to give it a different mount point in there somewhere.
Diskdrake says 52, everything else 32. Plus, I now have another partition that is 20
GB that doesn't even exist, but shows up in xffm, konqueror, whatever. The good news
is that after all this jacking around, I was able to set the permissions on the 32/52
partition so that I can access it in Linux.

To summarize, I have two 32 GB partitions, a 20 GB partition, all in a 52 GB partition.

Help! Where is the configuration info kept? (I checked and made sure fstab was
correct) Do I need to wipe the entire hard drive and start over?

If your system is put into high stress while you write a CD you might
get buffer underruns or in the worst case the system locks up
completely. Almost always these problems hint towards an incorrectly
 configured system.
First check the transferrate of your harddrive - on linux there is a
tool called hdparm which does a nice job here.
 /sbin/hdparm -t /dev/hda
This will measure the raw read throughput of your drive - you should see
values like 20-30MB/s for modern drives. If you are way below that value
you cannot write CDs in high-speed. Check if DMA transfer is enabled for
that drive. (See man hdparm for details).
Next thing is to check if you have other programs which also access the
CD-ROM/CD-Writer. Desktop-Systems often have KDE or Gnome running which
try to automount each inserted CD. This often kills cdrecord. Turn off
all this automatic CD handling in the Setup of KDE/Gnome. There are also
CD-Player applets in KDE and Gnome which should be disabled.
Now we check the writer device itself. Use hdparm again to see if DMA is
enabled. For some systems DMA should be on, on others it should be
disabled. You have to try for yourself which configuration gives you the
 best results.
 /sbin/hdparm -d 0 -u 0 -k 1 /dev/hdc
This command disables DMA transfers /dev/hdc (possibly your CD-Writer).
Some reports told me that this often fixed problems.
If you still have problems you can try to set the Set SCSI IMMED flag
option within the X-CD-Roast write dialog. On systems where harddrive
and writer are on the same IDE bus this can improve the behaviour.

I got over the xcdroast reboot problem. There was clue on the xcdroast website that
Debian distros might have trouble with ATIP sensing and to run xcdroast with the -a
option to bypass that. It worked. New problem. I can't blank a DVD+RW disk. I get
the following error

Sense flags: Blk 0 (not valid)

I've tried this with dvd+rw tools as well as xcdroast. I get the same error. The
first time I used xcdroast to burn a data disk (approximately 3GB of data), it
formatted fine and seemed to burn fine, but stopped at 704MB. It thought it was a CD
even though I set the media capacity to 4.7GB. Now I can't blank the disk to try
again.

Re: [newbie] xcdroast reboots my computer

2003-08-01 Thread Linus Drouhard
Yes, I uninstalled (several times) and reinstalled. I reformatted the / and /usr
partitions on my harddrive and reloading Mandrake and reinstalled xcdroast. The only
thing I didn't erase was my home directory. I couldn't find anything in it that
related to xcdroast.

I suspect that I've installed some other package that is interfering with xcdroast,
but I have no idea what it could be. xcdroast worked for me in the distant past (I
don't recall my exact configuration).

[newbie] xcdroast reboots my computer

2003-07-31 Thread Linus Drouhard
I'm running 9.1 and have been trying to figure out how to burn DVD's (I have a Sony
DRU500A). Eveything I've read says that xcdroast is the best program to burn DVDs
with. I installed it and ran it as root the first time (as you must) and it caused a
hard reboot. Tried it again. Same result. Reinstalled 9.1. Same result. I
searched the log files and could find no clues. Does anyone have any ideas? BTW I
can burn CD's no problem with Gtoaster, Gcombust, Eroaster and most of the others. I
just can't figure out how to burn DVDs.

Ideas?

Thanks

Stephen,
I have the same problem with the Nvidia drivers. The only thing that works ok
is xawtv capturing direct off the video capture card with the device called out as

xawtv -c /dev/v4l/video0

Everthing else, EVERY other player gives me blue garbage or a smear on the screen.
Well, that's not quite true. They are ok in full screen mode. The only fix I could
find was to use the nv drivers.

I would really like to figure this one out as well, cause I can't play Tux now.

black bar down the left center of the screen and a totally blank screen with a mustard

[newbie] On the fly copying - NOT

2003-01-12 Thread Linus Drouhard
I've been trying to set up on the fly copying on my computer. I've followed
the various threads on this subject. X-CDRoast gives me an error saying that
only pure audio CD's can be copied. I believe that's what I'm trying.

G-Toaster will appear to copy on the fly. Everything looks right. It
completes the burn. I put the CD in a player and it has all the tracks, the
right length and everything. Just no sound. It plays in a CD player, but
but is silent. G-Toaster works fine when burning audio tracks from the hard
drive. I know that I can rip the audio to the hard drive and then back to a
CD, but that is a lengthy process. Or I can choke boot up Windows and do
on the fly copying there.

Any ideas?

Oh, I'm using Mandrake 9 with a generic CD reader and CD-RW, both SCSI
emulated.

Re: [newbie] Printing envelopes

2002-12-17 Thread Linus Drouhard
Anne,
I don't print many envelopes and I don't make them part of the main document.
The OO letter function does not work quite as well as MS Office. It just
formats a page that happens to be envelope size. If there's a way for it to
automatically recognize the address from a letter, for instance, I don't know
how to accomplish that. I'm a simpleton, I guess. I just start a new
document, set the page format to envelope, type that addresses and print.
That suits me for the very few envelopes I do print.

I have not had any trouble with OO restarting itself. I've had a few other
difficulties with MDK 9.0, browsers that suddenly quit communication to
printer, Galeon freezing all the time, Software Updater has never worked, and
a few other annoyances. I fixed the browsers be removing and reinstalling.
I've not figured out Software Updater, it connects but won't download a thing
from any connected server.

Oh, well, now I'm wandering far off topic. I don't have any other ideas for
you on OO except to try the old Microsoft solution of remove and reinstall.
I personally hate that approach as I want to know what's wrong and fix it
directly. Good luck.

Linus

OK, Linus. Now I need some pointers. I'm used to Lotus WordPro, which

In OOo I found that creating an envelope put the envelope as page 1 of the
document. Can that page be re-oriented without affecting the body of the
letter? My problem is that everything is, quite reasonably, I suppose,
done to make change from MSOffice easy, but if you didn't use that anyway
it can be a struggle to find how to achieve things. Any help you can give
 would be greatly appreciated.

I do find that if I do something that upsets OOo it goes into this
spontaneous re-boot, often corrupting the file as well. I had to re-type a
long one yesterday because of that.

2002-10-12 Thread Linus Drouhard
I finally did the obvious and reinstalled 9.0. That fixed my printing
problem. I may never know what the problem was (and really won't care as
long as it doesn't happen again.) I really wanted to discover the problem
and fix it rather just a clean install, but, as someone else mentioned,
not having printing is a show stopper. Good luck to everyone else still
struggling with printing.

Marcia,
My syslog didn't have any of the errors that you reported. USB appeared to
load up just fine. I can see the printer with PrinterDrake as well as
USBView. Everything comes through except printouts. Apparently a whole host
of problems result in similar behavior. I'll keep working on this. If you
make any headway, please post. Thanks.

Re: [newbie] usb printer probs in 9.0?

2002-10-06 Thread Linus Drouhard

I have been having problems with printers in general with 9.0. I have a
Stylus 777 (Epson) connected through USB. Sometimes PrinterDrake can find
it, other times not. I've successfully printed two test pages. That's all.
The rest of the time it gets stuck and I get the message usb port
busy...will retry in 30 seconds well, the pages never come out. Deleting
and reinstalling the printer has only worked once.

I tried an old HP Laser Jet with my parallel port. I've had one test page
print, and it took 20 minutes or more before it came out. Otherwise, same
similar problem to Espon. Right now I have no working printers and am just
about ready to go back to 8.2.

correctly in MCC. When I try to configure with PrinterDrake, I go through
the wizard process, and all seems OK till I try to test the driver and
  get asked for a password:

behaviour, then it refuses my root password too. What does PrinterDrake
  want??

I click on Finish and get this error: An error occurred while
  retrieving the printer list: client-error-not-found.

Why isn't my printer being found?

The 480SXU is a usb only printer, and it's listed on the Mdk hardware
site as being perfectly compatible w/9.0. It worked perfect for me under
  8.2.

It doesn't seem to be detected during boot. usb is loaded but the printer
  isn't detected.

Anyone have any ideas? TIA for anything.

I got my printer configured and working. I tried unplugging the usb cable
from the computer port and plugging it back in.that didn't help, but I
tried plugging it into my other usb port...presto! I was able to configure
the printer w/PrinterDrake, and it is now functioning OK.

I wonder why the first port was not acceptable?? It was working there in
 Mdk 8.2.

Seems strange that the installer didn't offer to configure my printer :-/
 It works now anyway. ;-)

Marcia,
Run PrinterDrake through the console. You will get extra messages there that
you don't get through the Mandrake Control Center. I'll bet that your
getting the following messages.

If so, I think that we have a generic problem with Mandrake 9.0. Weird thing
is, my son has almost the exact same setup that I have K7S5A MB with 1GHz
Duron, Nvidia video. His works fine.

 and vice versa???

 smbpasswd username

(its also handy to make a unix login for her using her username and
 password on your box.)

Then do the same on the XP machine, add a username and password that you
can use in Komba2 to log onto her box.

Keep in mind that XP home is limitied to only 3 machines on the network...
 (pro doesn't have that limit.)

Ok, I've tried a lot of things, but I cannot figure out how to connect to
my wife's Win XP computer (home version). I get a message which is
something about needing a password. I turned off all the passwords,
protections, and other junk on her computer that *should* allow it to
network. I can *see* the computer but cannot network to it. I've set up
the workgroup and am using Komba2 to access her computer. I can do this
quite successfully to a W98 box on the network, so I know the network is
sound. By the way, I can't network the W98 boxes to her computer either
and I refuse to run the special Microsoft program to set up *older*
versions of Windows to network to XP. I'm actually kind of glad that
Micro is shooting their own foot off. Other people as frustrated as I
might give up and switch to the vastly superior Linux OS. In the meantime,
I can't convince my wife so I'm stuck still trying to network her computer.
Any help, web sites, or just plain commiserating is welcome.

I tried that. Her XP box refuses to let me in. I should be ok with the three
computers. Is this three computers networked to the XP machine? (total of 4)
or three computers total?

What did you use to network your XP box? Komba? Samba? something else?

Thanks for the help.

I had a similar problem. In my case, the sampling rate for the sound card

Well, your other programs look at links

 /dev/cdrom

which is most probably hanging--attached to nothing

Your drives under ide-scsi are /dev/scd0 and /dev/scd1

And you need to set up /etc/fstab entries and also the /dev/cdrom link

 /mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount
 dev=/dev/scd0,fs=iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

and a second entry for the other CD drive with say /mnt/cdrom1 and
 /dev/scd1

and erase the previous entry or better comment it out for the CD drive.
the one where it says dev=/dev/hdb

Finally in a terminal as root, the ONE drive where you want to play
 audio CDs

 ln -fs /dev/scd1 /dev/cdrom

Yep select one drive for audios and make sure you have the audio cable
from that drive to the sound card, and link that one to /dev/cdrom so
 the players can find it.

Thanks for all the suggestions, doing these, and deleting and creating new

2002-06-23 Thread Linus Drouhard

snip

The ECS K7S5A is high performance, but before 8.2 was little better than
 a boat anchor itself.

With 8.2 you need to do some tweaks:

 1. edit /etc/modules.conf and find the line that starts

 alias sound-slot-0 pcm-snd-i8x0

and delete it and the line following it.

 then put in this line

 alias sound i810_audio

 and save the file.

Don't bother with your SB 16 card for this machine. The onboard sound
is good once you get past the misconfiguration for/by ALSA.

The SiS 900 should set up properly from the beginning, so you will have
 networking.

Even a Duron 750 will make this look like a speed demon, along with all
the RAM you can cram (use either SDRAM _XOR_ DDR, but not both), and it
is neat if you have two IDE drives and RAID0 most of your partitions
except /boot and /--very blindingly fast with 8.2.

From what you described it appears your burn does not read on the CD
drive that well. I would suggest trying different media or a different
 CD drive before retreating.

I had a similar problem here with a DVD reader on one machine. Turned
out that CDs I burned at 1x, 2x, 8x and 12x would all fail, but if I
burned at 4x they would read. The DVD rreader, brand new, had its own
problems--like refusing to recognize CD2 and CD3 during install though
 it did so post-install.

Sorry the hardware story on CDs is so crappy, but then they are
seriously driven too fast in rate of spin for no valid engineering
reason. At least we don't have 70X CD readers out there any longer and
the worst of the manufacturers seem to have died off.

 Civileme

I don't think that's it. I don't have any trouble with any other CD's. I
have an old Ricoh 4X burner that has a max read speed of 20X. It's worked
perfectly with everything else. I believe that I have bad hardware, or just
a combination of stuff that doesn't work. I'll try 8.1 again. If that
fails, I'll probably be looking at a new motherboard. Thanks for all of your
help. I skim through many of the posts, but I always read the ones from
Civileme. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

I tried that. I burned a new CD after verifying the MD5 sum. All ok. I
reinstalled MD 8.2 after reformatting all but /home. I made sure that I
clicked the install for CUPS and Foomatic during the install. Same thing.
Whenever I try to run software manager and install ANYTHING from the CD, it
grinds for about 20-30 seconds and freezes. I'm believing that I either have
a hardware conflict (I removed all suspect cards), or my motherboard is going
on the fritz. In the middle of all of this, it started reporting the wrong
voltage for -12V and indicated -14.2V instead. I had to ignore that
warning in the BIOS to proceed. Other than the above described problem,
everything else seems to be ok. ??? Any other suggestions? If I lived
closer to a lake, I might just have a nice boat anchor

My next and last attempt will be to try to reinstall 8.1 which worked fine.

had that happen in my 8.2 also with a new account. i believe it is because

It works fine if I start it in console. Does anyone have any ideas on what

Re: [newbie] No printing in 8.1 now

2001-11-28 Thread Linus Drouhard

Marcia, hang in there. Printing can be (is) often frustration. I don't
pretend to know all of the answers. I'm just a newbie that has struggled
through this a couple of times. I just know what worked for me. I have an
Epson Stylus 777 (good quality printer, but very expensive cartridges).

Here's what I recall about getting my printer to work when it quit (or gave
me reams of ASCII garbage that I couldn't turn off).

I use CUPS, and have the best luck using the WWW version of QTCUps
administration. I deleted all printers from my system with the admin tool.
I then reinstalled the CUPS printer driver and gave the printer an altogether
new name. You can give the printer any name you want, but I think you should
not use a command such as lpr as a printer name. Don't know if that's bad,
but I didn't do it. I used Printer, KDEPrinter, among others. Anyway, I
don't know if that was necessary either. That's just what I did. Reinstall
the printer driver. You should be able to get a test page at this point.
Select the appropriate resolution (mine will almost not work with the default
setting of 180 x 180 (or whatever it is) but works MUCH better at 360 x 360).
If this works, you should be able to select this new printer from your
applications. I don't know about XPP and what it might be doing. I
sometimes use XPP and it appears to use the same driver that I installed for
CUPS. Maybe someone else can explain that. Good luck!

It was configured and printing on LM 8.0. There were 3 drivers available
for that printer in CUPS. I tested them all and setup a 'lp' and a 'lp1'
  using two of the choices.

In the last month I did a 'clean' installation of LM 8.1, including
updates of CUPS and CUPS drivers. I ran through the CUPS installation
process in the installation menu (you can do this from within the
Mandrake Control Center after the fact as well). I selected the printer
using my preferred driver and did a test page. Everything was OK in
  terms of the test.

However, from any application (and from a desktop drop) I was getting
garbage out (symptoms the same as you described in your original note).
I was stuck until I discovered that the the new version of cups-drivers
had added another choice to the list. I chose it. All print tests were
passed and, more importantly, it prints from any application. I have no
idea why the old drivers no longer work.

So my questions. Can you configure the printer and send it a test page?

If so, consider trying all the available drivers for your printer (or
similar printers) to see if you can get around the problem.

You should be able to fix the slow part by INCREASING the resolution. For
some reason, the Epson printer drivers default to a non-supported resolution
of something like 180 dpi. Change that to 360 or higher and you'll probably
be much happier.

has worked. I started to load ALSA, but the first thing the HOWTO said was
to turn off all the other sound drivers. Number two was to be sure
soundcore was running.

Ok, stage is set. How do I make sure that I've turned off all the other
sound drivers (I have a classic SB16 ISA -PNP card)? snd is currently
running, I think that I can turn that off. But is there anything else?

The second part has me stumped. I cannot find the soundcore module anywhere
on my computer. It is listed in the modules.dep file as required for several
modules (that I'm not running). ALSA was automatically installed when I
installed M 8.0. I would guess that if soundcore was only required for ALSA
it would have been installed also??? Is soundcore required for normal
non-ALSA sound?

BTW, I have the following hardware

AMD K6-II at 420 MHZ
ASUS P5A motherboard
160 MB RAM
20 gig Maxtor HD
CD and CD-RW -(both work fine)
NVidia TNT2 32 MB
Realtek NIC
and SoundBlaster 16 ISAPNP. Worked fine in Windows.

Thanks, Linus

I can't get midi files to play, except in sndconfig. See other responses
below. I don't know what most of this means. Thanks for your help.

Yes, I think that might well be the case. Btw, we're talking about
an old ISA SB16, and not the relatively new SB16 PCI I think...

It's definitely an old ISA card.

The Creative Labs names sometimes cause confusion :)

The driver seems to be loaded ('snippets' of sound); check with
 '/sbin/lsmod | grep sb' .

Here's what I get
sb 7136 1
sb_lib 33120 0 [sb]
uart401 6224 0 [sb_lib]
sound 54256 1 [sb_lib uart401]
soundcore 3504 5 [sb_lib sound]
usb-ohci 14496 0 (unused)
usbcore47248 1 [usb-ohci]

 Use 'cat /proc/interrupts'
Here's what I get
   CPU0
  0: 288781 XT-PIC timer
  1: 4523 XT-PIC keyboard
  2: 0 XT-PIC cascade
  5: 0 XT-PIC soundblaster
  9: 5973 XT-PIC usb-ohci, eth0
 12: 216728 XT-PIC PS/2 Mouse
 14: 20301 XT-PIC ide0
 15:498 XT-PIC ide1
NMI: 0
ERR: 0

and 'cat /proc/dma' to check for IRQ and
 DMA problems.

and here's what I get there.

 1: SoundBlaster8
 4: cascade
 5: SoundBlaster16

In your first mail you said: 'The midi track played fine' ,
referring to 'sndconfig'. Can you now play a midi file ?

I think we're heading down the wrong path. I've checked another place in KDE
and there aren't ANY drivers installed for the Soundblaster! HardDrake sees
it incorrectly and won't load the drivers. I tried manually. Thanks for
your patience.

Here are the answers to your questions below. Maybe something will come up.

No, there isn't physical room to put a card in each slot.

open KDE Control Center=Sound=Sound Server and made the default the
sound driver (neither ALSA nor autodetect) then logged out an
   rebooted.

Ok, if it says neither ALSA nor autodetect and there is one other choice,
why would you choose autodetect, since that was part of neither? have you
tried OSS? damn that sounded a little to much like the father in me, I do
not mean to sound so gruff. Excuse me please.

No problem. I didn't understand that the sound driver and Sound I/O Method
were the same, since in KDE System Control under the Properties of
Creative SB16 PnP Audio there is no driver installed. I thought I was in
the wrong screen.

This part confused me. I don't have default sound driver as an option
here. Sound I/O Method is currently set to autodetect. My only
choices are autodetect, Open sound system, and No audio
input/output. I have no other choices.

Might you have some servers or mail checking going on in the forground
that may be using all the CPU resources for a few seconds? what version
   of Mandrake are you running?

just because you did not start them, does not mean you do not have servers
running. In Mandrake, servers are running when you start up, by default, as
long as you installed them when you installed the OS and have not made sure
they do not start at boot and are turned off as you work.

OK. On this, I have to plead ignorance. What should I be looking for here?
To my knowledge I don't have any mail servers running. I am running Samba.
Everything else seems to run fine.

I'm running Mandrake 8.0 with the 2.4.3-20mdk kernel. I've tried this
nothing running at all after a fresh boot.

I've been poking around some more. Only part of the soundcard is
recognized. The multimedia controller is all that is working. The other
three parts (game controller, midi, and something else) are reserved
but not operational. They're listed under the unknown device class in
the KDE System control center. The part that is shown as working has NO
  DRIVER INSTALLED.

Thanks for all of your help.

I tried to find Kmix, don't have it. I did get CD Player to work. But I

It (xmms) freezes whenever I try to stop it. In fact, just about any of

not sure I want to tackle that now. Please help a newbie in distress.
