Margot this is getting OT, but oh well. i havn't checked my school's library to see what they have on linux in there. i was working on scheduling for next semester, and found a class that's description said access, html, and unix. i was stoked! then i found out that the class was only availible for computer majors, of which i am not. i'm currently a psych major, until i can get my major changed to Criminal Justice and then i'll tke psych as a minor. anyway, i set an appointment to talk to the professor that teaches that course, figured if it's good enough, i'd try to get pink slipped into it so i could learn some UNIX and get credits for it. he was very honest with me in that he is not a unix expert, and only knows the basics, and that's all he teaches in that class, most of the focus is on access. the next class he teaches a little bit more about unix, but not much. so i was disappointed. then he gave me the real disappointment. the university used to have a professor that was a unix expert. unfortunately, he retired a few years ago and the university hasn't replaced him. that was upsetting, as i would've loved to take a unix class as a free elective, pick up some credits for it, AND have some good knowledge to take home with me and be able to put it to use almost immediately. i tried the basic linux class online, but fell behind quick, and never completed it. if i was able to take a class at school on linux, i'd have more time to devote to it and get things done, plus i'd have what i need to learn computer stuffone-on-one help. i can't read a text book on computer stuff or read a webpage article and fully understand what's going on. i only know one person that can explain computer things to me in terms i understand, and he has taught me all i know. but he lives in florida and i live in pennsylvania, and i've only seen him once in the past 2 1/2 years, although we do keep in touch. oh well. downloaded 9.2 friday night and hoping to get it installed over thanksgiving weekend. if not then, i'll get installed over xmas break, which would probably be better, because if i make a mistake and wipe out my system, i'll be hurting, as i have a lot of school related stuff saved on one of my hard drives. it'd hurt to lose things like that 2 weeks before finals :O Mike Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Do you have any kind of a large plastic window cut into your computer like a lot of folks do for game machines, that could be a factor. What you have is a signal escaping from your computer and probably mixing with an other signal producing a sum and difference frequency that is in the reception range of your TV or cable box. If you want to stop this signal leakage go to Radio Shack or a good electronics suppler and get some ferrite beads to go around any cables coming out of your computer. Power cord speakers, printer cable etc. Put the ferrite beads on the cables as close to the computer as possible and the problem will probably dissapear. This is the short quick explanation. Whole books have been written about this sort of problem so needless to say I don't have the space to go into all the detail here. my computer is in a cabinet in my desk, solid box, no plastic windows or anything like that. the nearest TV is directly above me in a bedroom, and there's 2 walls between the computer and the TV in the living room. so nothing is extremely close to it. the strangest part though, was that was was coming through the speakers was NOT on the TV at the time. the audio from a Discovery Channel show on the Loch Ness monster was coming through, but when i ran into the next room and switched the TV to discovery channel, that show wasn't on. maybe i have found the loch ness monsterit's living in my computer desklol thanks Marc. Choose conservative video card an monitor settings to get started with. Probly 1024x768 @ 60Hz, 30-70 kHz HorizSync 50-120 Hz VertRefresh. 'lspcidrake' and 'ddcxinfos' will tell you which video card you have, and what your monitor specs are (HorizSync, VertRefresh) if the hardware has this info imbedded in it's firmware. There's another utility that reports onboard video ram, but for the life of me I can't remember what it is. If anyone knows what it is, please chime in. i have no specs on this card other than what the manufacturer's web site says. Vram shouldn't be a problem for configuring the Vcard an monitor tho. As to 'old' stanza's in lilo.conf, just delete them, an run 'lilo'. I believe MCC has a GUI for doin it too. If your /boot partition is gettin full, carefully delete old images (vmlinuz) an initrd's. They're the only files that use a lot of disk space, the links (system.map, config*, etc.) you can leave (or delete). Just be careful. If you have a spare partition to back up to, it's probly a good idea to backup /boot before you try any deleting. ok, i'll give this stuff a shot, except the deleting files stuff, i'll get to that later. i'm not too worried about hard drive space, as when i did the install i gave mdk almost 15Gb and split it right down the middle into / and /home, and i rarely use /home to save my stuff to, but i'll keep all the deleting stuff in mind for the future. all the 'old' linux things on the lilo screen are because i re-installed in order to get back into mdk. i knew i wouldn't lose all my settings if i just did a re-install. however, it's the 'old' ones that i screwed up royally. so just go ahead and delete them out and then update the 'new' stuff online for security and bug fixes and what not? since i'm in linux i can use the GUI to try to change the screen resolution and refresh and rates and all that instead of going into the command line. yes, i like the GUI for some things, command line for others. hey, i'm a new 'convert', command line is totally new to me, while i'm not afraid to use it, when dealing with multiple option settings (like all the stuff that can be done to the montier settings) i'd prefer the GUI. thanks, i'll see how this all goes. You can be glad that you do not have win xp for more reasons than just the virus issues. I have used machines with 95, 98, ME and XP as best as I can tell the single biggest difference between 98 and XP is eye candy. Same old winblows crap with a lot more eye candy and a generous portion of bloat added also. I almost forgot a defragmentation utility that is as F#$ked up as a football bat. Any given machine seems to run much slower when 98 is upgraded to XP, and to top that off there still seems to be a lot of issues with getting drivers to work in XP. IMHO in the last 5 years all MS has been able to do is take a bad product and make it worse. A few new features were added but I cant see where getting a few improvements were worth the problems that came with them. I have seen much more genuine improvement from Mandrake in the 6 months that it took mandrake to change from 9.0 to 9.1 than I have seen from MS in the 5 years that it took to go from 98 to XP. Oh well enough of my rant. i am glad i'm not using windows often. while i have heard some things about XP, there's an extensive process that must be done to turn off a lot of programs hiding in teh background that are sitting there eating up memory and resources, and MS did not make it easy to find the switch to turn them off at boot up. but everything that has gone on in the ms world and them trying to control what we do with a computer loaded with their software, i just don't like it. that's one of the main reasons i'm trying to stay away from it at all costs. i just can't justify supporting that way of thinking. while i'm not violently lashing out against it, when in computer related discussions with friends and whatnot, i do bring up linux and am able to inform them of what i know about it and what i've seen as advantages and disadvantages over using a MS OS (disadvantage - gotta start learning how to use the command line, it was a struggle for me at first, now i'm comfortable with it). linux is a disadvantage to some people because all they want to do is point and click, but even then most of what i do in linux has become point and click thanks to the GUIs. but even when doing things in the GUIs, i still feel i have more control over the system than i ever did in ms. but now this is kinda going off topic, so to boil it back down to linux...from what you all say, the threat of a virus attack isn't here, and it's one less thing to worry about. that's good, and i like that. Re: [newbie] Viruses..........
so here's a question about the viruses. does a router with a natural firewall built in help out at all? i'm on cable and i run a 4 port router, even though i only have one computer on it, and i only use the router for the firewall protection, just to keep the hackers out. but since my IP address stops at the router and my machine gets a different IP address, because the router gives it an IP address like it's on a network, does this help out at all in the stopping of spreading any viruses? if i am wrong in any of this, please correct me. i was told that what is seen from the outside is one IP address, and if i was running 4 computers off of the router, only the one IP address assigned to me by the cable company would be seen on the 'outside' using basic means to see it. of course, they could use some programs to see there are more machines on the network if they really wanted to, but that'd start being an invasion of privacy at a certain point. like i said, if i'm wrong, correct me. please. A lot of onboard video ram is mostly a marketing gimmick. set what aperature? i might be getting more experimental with video here as i go on. since i've got the DVD drive now, i was talking to a friend about a DVD Decoder card, as it will take the processing strain off the processor and give me more head room there. using mplayer for DVD playback, my processor jumps from 60% useage all the way to 90% at times during playback. never below 60% during DVD playing, and i'm running an AMD 950MHz Slot A processor. if i start composing an e-mail or doing extensive surfing at the same time, i'll hit 100% processor use and the video playback will start to get choppy, but the sound chugs along just fine most of the time. so getting something in there to take some strain off the processor would be nice, and might even make the graphics better during DVD playback. Once you have upgraded the kernel you can then specify the new (larger) amount of RAM, re-install your nVidia drivers, if that is what you used, and you're off to the races. Same thing I was wonderin. With 1 gig of ram I believe he'd be better off keeping the UP kernel and adding 'mem=860M' to lilo, or booting with 'linux mem=860M'. There's a significant memory management performance hit in the BigMem (enterprise) kernels in order to provide addressing = 4gig's of ram. i remember reading that somewhere that something needed to be addressed in order to run over a certain figure of ram, but when i was playing around with it, it started downloading something, and i assumed it was a kernel patch or something to handle the higher amount of memory. yes, i assumed. hell, half the time i just assume what it's downloading is what i need, and so far i havn't had any problems. until now, of course. I have an nvidia GeF2, but use the XFree86 driver. IIRC, there's issues with nvidia's proprietary driver and = 1 gig of ram and/or the bigmem kernels. I think the mem=860 restriction with the UP kernel would eliminate those problems too (if they still exist?). well, i'll keep that driver in mind for the nvidia GeF2 card and i'll give it a try later, although right now, i have seen a noticable change in my screen image when i pulled the RIVA card and put the GeF2 card in. i have no clue what the capabilities of the card are either, as i didn't buy it, it came inside a comp case that had a bad motherboard. NVIDIA tech support couldn't even tell me, other than to just check the specs on their website, so as far as i know, it could only be a 32Mb card or it could be a 64mb or 128mb, i have no clue. so anyway, how do i fix my screwups? the lilo screen now has all the regular options plus the old linux, old linux-nonfb, old linux failsafe, which those are the ones that i can't get anywhere in. do i just forge onward and remove those things from lilo.conf or can i fix what i screwed up? thanks! [newbie] Graphical Log-in Problem
i opened up the comp to take the NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 card out and replace it with an NVIDIA GeFORCE2 MX200. now that i'm in linux, i can see a noticible difference in the clarity and crispness of things on the screen, and i havn't even tried playing DVDs yet. but the key words in the above sentence.'now that i'm in linux'. upon firing the computer back up, i went chose linux at the lilo screen. it detected new hardware and the removal of hardware, and i went and configured it right there. i guess that was my mistake. i let it test itself, it eventually put me to a black screen at the command line asking for a log-in. once i halted the system, i booted back in again, chose linux again, and after a it booted up, it went back to the same black screen. linun-nonfb does this too. i am only able to get into the graphical desktop by using 'failsafe' and i have to choose that i want to enter in a graphical mode and enter the root password so the INIT runlevel will go from 3 to 5 to let me into the system (at least that's what i notice it does while things are scrolling up the screen). so anyway how do i fix this? i'd like to be able to get into the system normally when the computer sees a reboot every week or so, for whatever reason it may be, gotta love it, full week w/out reboot and even then it's not because of problems...i'll never be a regular ms-windows user again. ok, that's getting off topic so yeah, how do i fix this? help greatly appreciated. thanks. ok, i should be shot. i will try to defend myself later after i discribe what i did. i still don't know why. i re-installed, i didn't delete out anything, i told it to 'upgrade' to essentially what i already had, MDK9.1. why i did this, well, i was playing around in MCC after i sent the last e-mail to the list, found the area to set up how the system boots. great! this should work good. and i swear the ONLY thing i changed was telling it how much ram i have, as i just added 2 new sticks and put the system from 768 to 1024mb, but (DOH!) i entered the wrong number, i thin i put 1084mb in there. so when i went to reboot, i couldn't get in AT ALL. said something about vga/mem needed a value or something like that. i absolutely had no clue what i was doing, and i really did NOT want to boot into win98. that's how much i don't want to use it, that i'm willing to screw up the whole mdk install and have to format it out and start over from nothing. luckily, the only thing saved on my /home is my e-mail (i'm using kmail, can someone tell me how to get it to save to another partition, like one on my 2nd hard drive so i don't lose everything) and my bookmarks in mozilla. so i wouldn't lose anythign important at least, everything is saved on a 2nd hard drive that's a FAT32 file type. so what do i do now? i swear i will not touch another thing until someone tells me what i need to do. honest. this time i won't decide to forge on w/out a clue about what i'm doing. if i need to supply more info, let me know, i'll be more than happy to dig it up. thanks. Mike The Error Lies Between The Keyboard And The Chair why i got so dumb with the computer tonight i'm exhausted. i just finished my 2nd week of college, i havn't been in for 7 years and i'm on freshman level. i started hitting the gym again after maybe a 5 year absence, so not only am i mentally exhausted, but i'm physically exhausted, and strained a muscle in my neck last friday (not in the gym, thankfully), recovered very quickly, and was in the gym again this past week, even though i probably shouldn't of been, it is still a little tender. so yeah, physically and mentally exhausted and drained. my bios is giving me slight problems right now, i really don't to play with it and i have a friend who kicks ass with hardware, i'll get him to tell me how to fix it. i spent a few hours earlier this evening trying to get a 2nd computer up and running, only to find out that the motherboard is pretty much fried, but that's ok, the wife picked it up for $5 and i got a good hard drive (too bad my motherboard is IDE and so are all 3 hard drives, cause i don't have room for a 3rd hard drive, running CD-RW and DVD drives), DVD ROM drive, 4 sticks of ram (2 of them 256mb, which i plugged into this computer earlier tonight), a better NVIDIA video card, a Creative MIDI drive (dunno if it works, don't know if i'll ever have a use for it), another ethernet card (which i will test soon to see if it is good, wouldn't mind a spare one of those either), and an HP 14GB tape drive, but no tapes (oh well, don't really have a use for it). plus another case and power supply, both of which are good. essentially, all i need to build a 2nd computer now is a motherboard (that runs PC133 sdram), processor (the processor in the dead board might still be good though), floppy drive, sound card, and a CD-RW drive. but what does this have to do with my problem? after being so exhausted from the past 2 weeks, from the time i came home from school today until about 30 minutes ago all i have been doing is playing with the computers. so i've been messing with the comptuers for about 8 hours now, with a few breaks, but still.. i should go to bed. i'm rambling and my dogs are wondering why i'm talking while i type, like i'm holding a conversation with the computer. make a joke about all this, i don't care, unless it's a bad joke. i can handle a joke, but bad jokes just shouldn't be told, they're just not funny. they're disappointing. make a good joke, i could use a laugh. i recently aquired a DVD ROM drive. i wasn't able to install the newest verison of XINE successfully, so i went ahead with mplayer. i can watch dvds now, but the volume is incredibly low. i have it all the way up on mplayer but it's not loud enough compared to other computer sounds, and when i turn the external volume up on the 4.1 creative sound system i have, other computer sounds blow me across the room because they are so loud. i'm using a soundblaster 16PCI card. Re: [newbie] Mouse Problems
this is gonna sound really weird, i can't explain it. my scroll mouse fully functions now and i have no idea why. i've played with the configuration to no end and couldn't get it to work. earlier today i had rebooted into ms-win to burn some photo cds, when i booted back into linux, the scroll wheel still didn't work except for being a button when pressed. a few hours later, a horrible thunderstorm swept through, our power went out, so of course the computer shut off instantly. when the power came back and i fired the box up, and at the prompts for it to fix the system from being shut down incorrectly, i told it to do so. i played around for a while, then opened up a web page, i rolled the scroll wheel and it worked! strange but true. oh well. [newbie] Mouse Problems
Posted this to the list yesterday but it still hasn't hit the list. and as said below, having a hell of a time accessing the archives. so here it is again, hope someone can help (and hope it makes it to the list this time). sorry to put this to the list w/out searching the archives first, but i'm having trouble searching the archives. most of the time when i try to access it i get a timeout and can't get in. anyway bought a basic logitech optical scroll mouse. PS2 connection, not serial or USB. problem is i can't figure out how (and where) to make the changes so the up/down on the scroll wheel act as the 4th and 5th buttons. i've found a few psaux icons while searching through the system, but every time i try to access one it tells me it's an unknown file or it says it's empty or something similar. i had googled for information on it and after searching through almost 30 pages i found some incomplete answers. there was mention about the sketchiness of the mouse too, and it is jumpy occasionally. what i found said there is a fix for that also, but i can't find where and what i need to change or modify. anyone able to lend some knowledge to this? the scrolling does work in ms-win, and in mdk i can push the scroll wheel and it acts like the 3rd button, so i know the mouse is fully functional. thanks in advance. [newbie] system crash....why?
isn't there somewhere that linux keeps a lot of what the system does? i'm sitting here this morning, got gaim, kmail, mozilla, and KsCD running, all of the sudden the mozilla window closes. figured that was pretty odd. i go to the kmail window, click on it, it closes. i turned off Gaim myself, but then the menu bar at the bottom of the screen wouldn't come up at all when i moved the mouse over it, so i switch to the desktop KsCD is on, try to turn that off, it disappears. so now i'm thinking the you konw what has hit the fan. before i can try an alt ctrl backspace to get out of linux and to the saftey of a reboot before i get a complete system crash, the system crashed. so now i'm forced to hit the restart button on the box. after a few failed attempts to get into linux, i throw the boot disc in the drive (cause off the CD alone it wouldn't go). i tell it to do an install and figure i'll just wait til prompted and rescue the installation. didn't give me that choice, guess it did it on it's own. couple of things came up about it sent kill signals and what not and said it was save to reboot my computer. i reboot and everything seems fine. but. does the system keep track of stuff like this so i can go in and check WHY it crashed? and if it does, where is there a definition of what that stuff means, because i prolly won't understand it on my own. besides my numerous CD drive failures, this is the only time i remember that the system has crashed. help appreciated, or a point or kick in teh right direction. :) Mike Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? More cups of coffee can be brewed from a pound of ground when the water is set to 180 degrees (F) than when set to 140 deg (F). Managers of the restaurant franchises actually complained that the coffee was being brewed too hot, because the cups would soften when the coffee was poured, and they were worried that their employees were being exposed to an unsafe condition. Documents showed that letters had been exchanged between local managers and upper management, and essentially, the upper managers had vetoed lowering the brew temps of the coffeee because it would effect the bottom line -- profits on the sale of coffee would be lower. When the customer was severely burned (badly enough to require skin grafts) and subsequently sued, the documents were discovered, and the jury found the upper management was at fault because they knew, and in fact had been warned on numerous occasions, that the restaurant's policy of brewing coffee at 180 degrees (F) was creating an unsafe condition. but this is why you don't put a cup of hot coffee between your legs in a car unless you want to risk getting burnt there. common sense there. i think it's pretty idiotic that people can sue others for their own stupidity. the problem with america is stupidity, stupid people keep breeding and doing stupid things. i'm not saying we should kill them all off, but let's remove all the warning labels from everything and let this problem take care of itself. but that's just my $0.02. but i can gaurentee if chainsaws didn't have a warning sticker on them telling the user not to touch the chain while the chainsaw is ON, i bet someone would sue when they lopped their fingers or hand off for touching it. if you don't have the common sense to say gee, this is a dumb/dangerous/stupid thing for me to do and could/would/will get me hurt/disfigured/killed, then you just deserve what you get. [newbie] drive partitions and what they mean
I'm sorry to ask this again, because i asked something along the same lines last week. someone even gave me a link for it, BUTmy hard drive was formatted out and everything is GONE. here's the setup 2 hard drives 20GB partitioned to 5gb for windows and 15gb for anything else 100gb drive unpartitioned and fresh took FOREVER to get the 100gb drive installed, but it's finally up and running. i had formatted out linux and ended up doing a re- install of windows 98. so to get to the questions i have... i need a lnk explaining all the linux partitions or someone to tell me what they are. i know one of the partitions is used for backing up the OS, and i'd like to store that on a separate hard drive. i want to make sure i put that partition separate in case ANYTHING. i've got 15gb to run with on my smaller hard drive. i could dedicate it all to linux if need be. the 100gb drive is a little faster than the 20gb drive. 100gb drive has 8mb buffer, 20gb drive has 4mb buffer, both are 7200rpm and 8.9ms seek time. both are on the primary IDE channel, 20gb is master, 100gb is slave. as i already said, i'm sorry to ask the same questions over again, but i've lost everything, and i really don't know how to do a search for previously asked questions. also the intended use of my computer.(because i'm sure this helps to know) music (constantly) video (getting into editing and burning VCDs) some gaming school work (semester starts Aug 25...been 7 years and i can't wait to get back!) web surfing i plan to share music and video between linux and windows. i'm actually going to partition my 100gb hard drive later on to separate them, or should i do this before installing mandrake 9.1 again? meaning, is it easier to have them partitioned prior to installation than it is to get new partitions working in linux? (btw, diskdrake is MUCH easier to use than fdisk) on a windows related noteafter using linux for only a week and then going back to windows, i find myself utterly lost in windows. i'm addicted. running multiple desktops is REAL nice, and i started to really prefer mozilla over internet explorer. thanks to all! Re: [newbie] Installing new hard drive...how?
ok, since my new ram showed up this morning (system is now up to 768MB), i decided it was time to install the ram and the hard drive. opened up the computer to check where everything was on the ribbons and see where i'm going to plug in the hard drive. the current hard drive and CDRW are on the same ribbon (havn't checked to see which is slave and which is master yet). from the posts others have left about data transferring from one drive to the next and bottlenecking, i figure the best way to set this up is to put the new hard drive as a slave to the floppy drive. well, the connector on the ribbon for the floppy drive isn't the right size for the new hard drive, and the ribbon the CDRW and other hard drive are on only has 2 connections. so i have to go out and buy a new ribbon. figures! my only other possibility is to use the 3rd IDE connection on the motherboard, BUT, the motherboard wasn't new when i got it. bought it from a friend who assembled the computer for me. he tried to put the floppy, hard drive, and cdrw drive each on their own ribbon, but said the 3rd ribbon port on the motherboard wouldn't work. he couldn't figure out why. i can try to use it, but he took his time putting the computer together and couldn't get it to work no matter what he tried. i'll have to wait 3 more weeks til he gets back from his honeymoon to get into detail with him on everything he tried. i've decided the best way to set everything up is to leave linux where it is on the 20GB drive. the drive was partitioned for me into 5 and 15gb sections. i partitioned out 5gb for mandrake 9.1, there's still 10GB left on that partition. when i put the 100gb drive in, i'm going to leave it all open for sharing between win and linux, and i'm still able to expand to give linux 15GB to run on the other drive, and in the future if for some reason i was doing things exclusively in linux that i needed to keep separate from windows (video editing most likely) i can partition off more spaec on the 100gb drive for that. any comments? guess it's a good thing i started this thread, as there've been multiple questions asked on the same subject. thanks for all the input from everyone so far! Re: [newbie] Installing new hard drive...how?
Okproblems. when my friend built the computer, he said teh primary IDE connector on the motherboard was bad. well, it's not. turned out he had been trying to hook up a bad hard drive to it. so since then, everything has been running on the 2nd IDE port. the CDRW drive is the master, the hard drive is the slave. I go to put in the new hard drive today. Linux recognizes my new hard drive, windows does not, at least i don't know how to make it recognize it. now, i had tried to swap the IDE connection to put the CD and hard drive on the primary and the new hard drive on the secondary, and the newer larger drive will be used for non-system related stuff. well, if i swap them over, the computer goes to boot up, it starts to boot linux (i screwed up a setting somewhere, linux boots every time i fire the computer up, i have to exit linux to get back to windows, dual boot option doesn't come up on start up). anyway, after it starts to boot up linux, it tells me it can't find hdd7 (one of it's partitions) and just sits there and stares at me with the caps lock and scroll lock lights flashing. well, i wanna solve this problem... i've got the hardware reconfigured so i can get on (obvoiusly). what i want to do is just format the old hard drive, completly wipe it out, shut down the computer, hook everything back up the way it needs to be, configure the bios, and install my stuff from there. in doing that, will windows recognize that i have 2 hard drives right off the bat? mind you, my current 20gb drive has 3 partitions, 2 for windows and then the linux partitions. i'm not concerned with a loss of data, as any programs i need i have on cd to re-install with. so yeah, you can say i'm looking for the EASY WAY OUT, but that's what i need at this point or i'm gonna have to get frustrated again, and believe me, i'm sick of being frustrated :) i know i can do formatting of drives from disk drake, and i figure i can go in with the boot floppy i have and just format everything out from there. i'm just really lost, i'm making mistakes, and need to get everything running smoothly. i sure do ask a lot of questions...but that's how we learn i guess! thanks! [newbie] Installing new hard drive...how?
Ok, here's the situation. my new 100GB hard drive showed up today. i need to put it into the computer and get everything set up. here's the way i plan to set up. 20GB hard drive i currently have - all for windows 100GB hard drive - 80GB for mandrake, 20GB for windows (that's my current plan, might go 60 linux 40 windows) i plan to use 2 hard drives, as neither of them is slow or old, only difference between them is the 20GB has a 4MB buffer and the 100GB has a 8MB buffer. both 7200rpm. now, here's where i need help.. which drive would i make the primary drive? my thought is that i'd make the 100GB drive the primary drive, as the computer would have to access linux before windows to give me the dual boot option, correct? Secondly...does the drive's position on the ribbon matter? i'm running 2 things on that ribbon currently, the 20GB drive and my CDRW drive. this is only the first computer i've owned that i've actually torn apart and put back together hardware wise, once while trouble shooting for a defective sound card, the other time doing a case swap. so i'm not all that familiar with hooking up new hardware. i know if i make the 100GB drive the primary, i have to switch the jumper on the 20GB drive to make it the secondary. and a final question.i'm running an ASUS KV7-RM motherboard that has all the bios updates done to it, so that's a plus, but will i have to enter the bios settings once i plug the new drive in? as far as how i'm going to work with linuxi havn't decided if i'm giong to do a fresh install and wipe out the old install or if i'm going to try to move the current install to the new drive (someone already gave me a link that explains how to do that). that's something i'll decide for myself once i get to that point. thanks in advance for any help! One is the primary, the other is the secondary. Each channel can handle both a master and slave drive. The drive jumpers determine whether a drive is to be the master or slave, but have nothing to do whether it is on the primary or secondary channel. It sounds as if your current setup has both drives on the primary channel with the HD as master and the CDRW as slave. My advice would be to leave the old HD as the primary master. Why confuse Windows more than it already is? i'm going to have to open the box up to be fully sure what is connected where. i remember there's 3 slots on my motherboard, but only 2 are being used. i believe there was a problem with the 3rd slot. You could install the new drive on the secondary channel and leave it jumpered as master; this arrangement is least apt to confuse Windows. However, my choice is to install the new drive on the primary channel as slave, and move the CDRW to the secondary channel as master. i'll try both arrangements and see what works. Check your BIOS settings that all of the IDE drives are set to Auto Detect (or whatever) -- and also that the secondary channel has not been turned off. I'll leave it to others to discuss partitioning schemes (it's been an active topic lately), but remember that you don't have to partition the whole damn 100 GB now. True, because from what i've seen, it's easy to partition off a section for linux, but a bit more work to give it back to windows. i can always add more for linux later on. kinda jumping the gun i guess. it's going to be an interesting week, but only the hard drive is going to be a struggle to set up. the new moniter is supposed to be here thursday (plug and play) and more ram (to boost the system to 768MB). those 2 are easy, i can handle those no problem. for now i guess i'll do the smart thingjust get the 100GB drive in and get it working properly, then worry about moving linux and partitioning later. hey, i got a new toy and i wanna play.isn't that just human nature? :) thanks! -- cmg Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] what do these different things mean? KDE, Gnome, etc
Ok, i have some questions about a few things, just stuff i don't understand. when i go to reboot, what are the differences between KDE GNOME ICE WM Failsafe Default i would guess that failsafe would be kind of like safe mode in windows, am i right? i'm also kind of guessing that default would be the most basic way to enter linux, with no preferences set in the system or anything else, right? And yet MORE questions (only reason i'm asking so many in this e-mail is because they all seem to be related to each other) When booting up the computer and i get to the dual boot option, among the choices is linux and linux-nonfb. what's the difference there? And one more question...what is ROOT and what is it used for? when would i ever have to use it and how do i get into ROOT? ROOT is used for adding programs or making changes, right? i'm searching for the answers online as well, but hoping someone can give me some good definitions of these things, either on-list or off-list, doesn't matter. [newbie] recognizing/testing hardware problems?
ok, in windows you can right click on my computer and it gives you hardware profiles and you can see if everything is working correctly. 1st questionwhere do you do that in mandrake 9.1? i think i saw it before but can't seem to find it now. 2nd questioncan you test your hardware for problems? reason i ask is i've had some minor problems with my video card before. when the computer would go into power save mode and turn the moniter off, half the time the moniter wouldn't come back on, it would give me an error (can't remember what it was). i got around that problem by turning that feature off and just manually turned the moniter off. well, earlier today, my moniter got REAL fuzzy, as in, could barely read the screen. i logged out of linux and jumped over to windows, same thing. then turned the comp off, restarted it, same thing again in linux and in windows. then i switched moniters and the problem is gone. yes, that would generally mean that it's the moniter that is bad, but it's a brand new moniter, not even 2 weeks old. anyway, just wondering if i can test the vid card while it's in the computer just to be certain it's the moniter and not the video card. Re: [newbie] recognizing/testing hardware problems?
checked it in the control center, ran test, no problems. i already took the faulty moniter back. it was a KDS 16 viewable, flat screen. already went and ordered a Samsung 18 viewable (19 overall) to replace it with, only cost $40 more, and that was because of shipping ($165 total). that'll be nice once i get it next week, as i'm back on my old Sony moniter with only 13.9 viewable. thanks for the help! [newbie] DirectX or equivalant?
my friend told me that he wasn't able to get games running in linux because linux doesn't support directX (he had just scratched the surface on this subject though). while i don't play games a lot, occasionally me and him will link up over cable and play multiplayer games. so the question iscan directX be used in linux or is there an equivalent to it that i can run all my windows based games off of? or is there a way to patch it in? i havn't even attempted to install any of my games yet, but it'd be nice to be able to and then point him in the right direction as well. btw, he's only dependant on winblows anymore because of gaming. that's the only thing holding him back from making a perminant switch to mandrake. Thanks for any info. and now that i am sending this out, i'm about to switch back to mandrake from winblows and start searching the links that you guys (and gals) gave me for programs and i'll probably run across a fix for this...that's just my luck...ask a question then immediately find the answer on my own! [newbie] Insert Name Here
so after the informal introduction (and me getting utterly ticked off doing an install). Hi. I'm Mike, and i'm a new linux user. HI MIKE I'd tell you what i do for a living, but i really don't do anything. lost my job in January to a back injury and havn't worked since. After getting a nice tax return (EIC really pays out when you have children), i got a good friend of mine to build me a PC to replace my outdated Vaio laptop, and upgraded to cable all at the same time. When all you can do is sit at home all day and take care of 2 kids, it's nice to have a decent computer and a screaming fast connection. anyway not being a lazy bum forever. I'm enrolled at Bloomsburg University (which is in central PA) for the fall semester. finally getting back in school after 4 years in the military and a few years supporting a family. can't wait! was told about linux by my friend that built up my computer, and decided to finally check it out, as it was either try linux or get him to hack me a copy of XP. i decided to take the legal approach to an OS, and i'm sick of using win98se. so just a little FYI for everyone so you know who you're dealing with! (by the way, all the angry marine aggression is out of my system after being out for 2 years...wellMAYBE!) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] Install - iit's working...almost
ok, well, i havn't actually done the install yet. but i did do a fresh download of all 3 CDs last night. i re-burned CD one by telling it to create a CD from an ISO image. then went to install again and it actually went into the install! but i restarted the computer once i realized that it was going to work. why? because i wanted to re- burn CD 2 and 3 so i can get everything installed at once instead of having to go back in and do it later. so once i'm done burning cd2 and 3, i'll be doing a full install (as long as the downloaded files are good). so about an hour before i go back into the install process. it's 1pm EST, so if there's anything i need to know before doing the install, i guess i've got about an hour to know. i do want to say thank you to everyone that has given me help and suggestions since i first posted yesterday and for putting up with my ranting and frustration. thanks again! If i clear out a bunch of my hard drive, can i go and re- install linux again to take advantage of more space? there were a few options i wasn't able to install because of lack of space. i'll scan disk my drives and defrag before i re-install. need to figure out all the stuff i gotta put in for accessing my mail, or see if i can access pegasus from linux (what i'm currently using because i HATE ms outlook and refused to use it). already tested out the media player, as i'm always listening to music on the computer, so that's a big deal for me. and this is what's going to happen when the wife gets home from work. HONEY! I GOT MANDRAKE 9.1 INSTALLED! Re: [newbie] uh oh, having problems, need help
ok, my current hard drive is a 20GB hard drive. it was partitioned for me (by my friend who built my computer) into a 5gb and 15gb partition. when i first installed mandrake, it only gave me slightly over 1gb of free space on my 15GB partitoin to install with. after seeing mandrake was working, i exited back to windows, deleted some things off the 15gb partition, then went to re-install linux to give it more space to run (was going to give it a good 4-5GB of space), and that's when the problems started. i really did a number on this one. i gave it more space when it came to the partitioning part, and told it to leave 10GB on the windows partition. now i can't use the linux option when i get to the boot choices screen, only linux-nonfb works. so where do i go from here to fix all this and give mandrake a dedicated 5GB to operate out of? thanks. Re: [newbie] uh oh, having problems, need help
5GB is a temp just for now. i'm trying to get this up and running and get a little familiar with it until i get my 100GB hard drive. once i get the 100GB drive, the 20GB drive i currently have will be used for Windows, the 100GB will be partitioned for linux (and it's a FAST drive too...100GB WD 7200rpm with 8mb buffer). i just defragged and scan disked my entire 20gb drive 2 days ago. it's clean. but i do need to know how to wipe this completely off the hard drive so when i do get the 100gb drive, i can remove linux in it's entirety from my 20GB drive. i'm not the only computer user in the house, so i do need to keep windows on the computer. what in linux will let me remove it completely from the hard drive and start fresh? diskdrake? i didn't install everything out of all the options i had, but i was trying to give some more room for mandrake to run in. i figured i could go back later and mess with it more. went in and expert installed to re-partition the drive and fix my mistakes. thanks Mike for the offlist info to get me going. i think it's going to be a slow process from here just in getting used to the new OS. all i've ever known is windows, and the first few years i ever touched a computer it was a Mac, so i never even played with DOS. Where can i go to find possibly archived QA stuff and maybe even listings of programs that i can and can't use. i primarily use the computer for music, surfing, e-mail, AIM, and now starting to get into burning video to VCD for DVD player playback. About the mail programs availible, i'm using pegasus mail on winblows, err, sorry, windows, and it has features such as checking my pop3 server how ever often i want it to (i have it set at every 30 seconds) for new mail. do the linux based mail programs offer that? anyway, wherever i can be aimed at to start finding this stuff and experimenting on my own...if anyone can point me that way...would be a great help. I've been extremely frustrated with both all day, as i've been tearing apart the laptop and re- assembling it and jumping back to the PC to try to see what i can do linux wise with it. it's been real difficult, and i'm getting so ticked off because the instructions sound SO simple but it's just completely eluding me. kinda like one of those moments when you're walking through your house in the dark in the middle of the night looking for the bathroom and you're half awake and you can't seem to find the light switch...i think we've all been there. ok, well, i'm calm now and ready to try at this again if anyone is willing to help me at this point.. if you would, please answer a couple of questions; 1 - where are you trying to download iso's from? From the linux-mandrake site 2 - what are names of iso's you are trying to download? the ones from the linux-mandrake site.'Mandrake91-cd1- inst.i586.iso' as well as CDs 2 and 3. 3 - what version of ms windows are you using? win98se 4 - what is model of cd burner? It's a phillips, that's about all i know. i can't find a listing of the model number. i'm prolly going to have to open up the computer to get that part. can't find anything in windows itself to tell me what the model number of the cd drive is. i'll get to that and get back to you with that info.. 5 - what cd burner prog are you using? NTI CD Maker 2000 Plus.OEM version for my CD drive 6 - are you using any type of firewall with ms? no firewalls 7 - who told you what His last name is? ;) I plead the 5th. :) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
