[newbie] Old-World install problem
Hello All, My first post, so hope it's not an old question. I have a g3 Wallstreet. I get as far as the install app loading and past the selection of language and license agreement. I get a message saying it loaded the pcmcia drivers, but then everything stops. Eventuallyl the CD spins down and I am sitting at the install screen with no messages, license is still selected on the left, and the watch timer. I've let it sit like this for half an hour with no luck. I tried adding video=atyfb:vmode:14,cmode:32, but it still just sits there. I get the same result if I use the benh kernel and all-benh.gz image or the vmlinuz kernel and the all.gz image. Always just stops at the same point. Any suggestions? [newbie] Can't start X, No Devices
Fellow Linux users, I'm trying to sell a Compaq Deskpro 2000 (Pentium 200MMX w/96M RAM, 1M Video), and I have a buyer if I can get Linux on it. The thing works fine under Win 98, Win ME, Win Pro. Under Linux my first hurdle was the sudden appearance of a bad track, resolved by installing the HD on another machine (no bad track there), installing MDK9.1 and transferring the drive back. Everything seemed fine, I was using WindowMaker and IceWM, and it was groovy. But something happened along the way and now it doesn't auto-login, and once logged in, it won't run X (or any other GUI I've tried). The display information is correct. The init level is 5. When I try to run X, there are several lines dealing with authority stuffs, and then there is the error message No Devices Found. I thought Linux's strength was that it could run on almost anything from watches to supercomputers, so the limitation here must be my ability to modify Linux for this machine. BTW, the bad track is apparently back because fsck finds a bunch of bad blocks in a row. It finds the same one each time run, and I've tried employing the -l/-L switches, but must be doing something wrong there too. It must be a BIOS issue, and on these Compaqs there's no convenient access to the BIOS. BTW, I spent 11 hours on this and look at recieving $60 for the system grin. Also, the bad track thing had me throw away a harddrive a few weeks ago, same tracks reading as bad on this drive, so that drive was probably ok too. sigh Is the answer: Nope, MDK9.1 won't run on that piece of junk, install Win and sell it for less? Or is it: Sure, just adjust the Kaiser Module and MDK9.1 will be fine on there? Bah!, Max Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

They have floppy images which will give you access to the BIOS to turn off features such as anti-virus, PNP, or whatever. The BIOS has probably overwritten some part of the boot or other sector of the drive, and this may be what is causing the prob. -- It is correct that the BIOS utility is normally written to a partition on the harddrive on this model of Compaq, F10 accesses that partition at boot-up. The partition was overwritten during one of my many attempts to install MDK91. It wasn't much good anyway -- there's no real BIOS control in there, just a description of the various hardwares and some minor testing software. There's no access to the important BIOS features found on modern computers (ie, no PNP, no Energy Savings, no timings, etc.). What does it mean when X claims No devices found? Yes, you are using autologin. When you use autologin, the dm is never started because autologin is handled elsewhere. You probably have autologin set in your dm too, which is why when you logout out and the dm starts, it logs you back in right away. Subsequent logouts present you with a login dialogue because the dm autologin only happens when the dm is first started. [newbie] Serial port problem
I'm having a problem with my serial ports. Mandrake 9.1, Fujitsu L-470 PII w/192M. This has a built-in modem, infrared port, and a serial port. When I set the serial ports to AUTO in BIOS then I'm unable to synch my Palm device using either ttyS0 or ttyS1 (Kpilot). When I disable the IR serial in BIOS, no change. When I manually define IRQ4 and 3f8 in the BIOS for the non-IR port, then DMESG lists it as ttyS0 with that information. That all seems good, but then I'm able to synch with either ttyS0 or ttyS1! Both ports seem to have the same information, somehow the port is split. I'm concerned when two software ports point to the same hardware because it may indicate that I've munged something, and it may reduce the efficiency. Thanks for your help, Max P.S. I have another problem which I believe is unrelated. In keeping with the FAQ I'll put it in another message. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] Evolution
I like the look and feel of Evolution as a mail reader, but I have a couple of questions for ya'll: How can I cause it to open Konquerer as a browser rather than Mozilla? Konq is listed first under KDE file associations, and I can't find anywhere in Evolution where there is a place to make an Evolution-link-to-browser change. Many of the current mail readers also allow us to set filters based on whether the sender is our addressbook. Sure I can probably do that with arcane fecthing and processing programs, but is there no provision in Evolution (I'm using whatever version comes with MDK 9.1) to do this? I've looked at every tab, every menu 4 or 5 times now and can't find it, but sometimes I miss stuff. grin Those of you who have upgraded to 9.2, is there a newer version of Evolution with this ability included? [newbie] pilot rpm corrupt?
After having the palm/mandrake 9.1 sync working well for a week or so with Kpilot I seem to have bolluxed it up by trying a sync with Evolution. Instead of transfer-pilot (or whatever the name of the Kpilot deamon is) it's now using gnome-pilot. And it's not working, so after playing around with it a bit, I decided that I'd mucked it up enough to deinstall the gnome-pilot stuffs and reinstall them. Used MCC to remove everything with 'pilot' in it, and tried to use MCC to install evoluton-pilot. This spurs the system to add about 4 necessary additional packages, which was fine with me. But after a brief period of apparent file transferring I get the following warning: Signature libgnome-pilot1-0.1.71-3.1DK.i586.rpm not correct, continue anyway? to which I say yeah. Then there's an error Could not read signature block ('rpmReadSignature' failed), and finally an error that the file is corrupt. I've tried this 3 times over a 12 hour period, so it's not some transitory error. I have distro cdrom 2 in the drive, and am using dresden for main, usc for contrib, ibiblio for updates (never any in 3 weeks -- does that seem right?), and zarb for plf. Is this error telling me that the files are corrupt at the source? Which source is it? (I didn't have any problem with the cdrom at installation - but I seem to remember there was a CDROM access error in dmesg . . . ) By the way, with no obvious deamons runnning, dropping the palm (Kyocera 7135 Smartphone) in the cradle and hitting the hotsync button on the cradle, nothing appears to happen at the desktop, but the palm does some synching stuff (not all, just the stuff that was set up in gnome-pilot). As a semi-unrelated question -- when I just try to synch while in Evolution it seems ok until it errors out unable to open gnome-cal. What should I look for there? [newbie] Desktops and their progs
Greetings, The default install of Mandrake 9.1 has provided us with a number of different desktop environments (7?), and I understand that the variety is there because of personal preferences in decoration and performance. But it has also provided us with some programs which seem keyed to specific desktops (Evolution for Gnome, Kpilot/Korganizer for KDE, etc.), and this implies that those programs will run well in all desktops (for example, the Gnome Configurations Manager is not available in KDE, so someone has taken the care to select what's pertinent). The Gnome environment doesn't work well for me -- it is much slower and uses a lot more CPU than KDE in my installation. I've spent the last several weeks customizing KDE's appearance and behavior and now have a highly responsive, visually pleasing working environment. But I really like the way Evolution, specifically, looks. So my question for ya'll today is: is there any reason that I need to stick with KDE native (would that be the right term?) applications, or can I freely use those Gnome applications I like in KDE (and, presumably, vice-versa)? The reason I'm suspicious is that after having a working palm sync scheme with Kpilot, and then trying it with Evolution, Kpilot had a lot of trouble and it seemed to be because Evolution had switched the deamon to gnome-pilot . . . [newbie] .directories
So last night I was trying to cajole Kpilot into syncing my PDA with Korganizer's calendar and the manual said that I needed to point the configuration to the calendar file, normally the default file in /.kde/usr/share/somethingorother [going by memory here]. So I looked around and couldn't find the file it was mentioning, nor any file anywhere with the suggested extention, nor even the directory. So I (correctly) reasoned that I needed to open the calendar program and save out a calendar, and I did. But I still couldn't find that directory. What-the-hell, give-it-a-try I manually typed in the /.kde/whatever stuff and was suddenly in the missing directory with all the expected subdirectories and files sitting just where they were supposed to be. I'm reckoning that a .directory is a hidden directory. How may I coax Konqueror to reveal existing hidden directories? Why would the /.kde/ directory be hidden? It's a Kyocera 7135 Smart Phone with Palm software and I'd thought that since it's a PDA with Palm software, that it would be the same procedure. Indeed, when using the serial port, it is the same procedure as with a Palm PDA, but the USB sync has greater demands. The upshot of it all is that there exist 2 files, drivers, which the USB synch calls to get manufacturer information and starting addresses, etc. These files, VISOR.C and VISOR.H need to have definitions of the device being used, and that information is lacking for many non-mainstream devices. Scouring the Web some more results in a number of other people who have had the same problem with a number of devices, and contacting some of them reveals that no updated files are known to exist for the 7135. I may be able to modify these files with the appropriate information, but that will have to wait until this weekend. Until then it's serial sync for me. Re: [newbie] My clock is fast
In the special relativistic frame of reference you describe time would appear to slow as you *approach* the speed of light. Exceeding it would not be necessary and, iirc, time would seem to reverse if you somehow did manage to do it. Doesn't much matter since there's all sorts of asymptotic behavior as you approach that value, infinite energy requirements, infinite size results, etc. (Which is why most modern SF doesn't bother with lightspeeds and instead folds space, creates additional dimensions or hyperspaces, of simply has things move from hither to yon without explanation.) =-=-= Being that time is relative, you might be in a situation where you're actually travelling faster than light, which would cause time to appear to slow down. If that is, in fact, the case, then you'll have to throttle back your space ship so that you're within normal operating bounds and time will again settle back into it's pace. [newbie] 3 simple questions
This is a PII 366 Mhz Fujitsu Lifebook L-470 with 192M RAM and a 30G Hitachi harddrive, Neomagic X128 video, ESS soundcard, and Mandrake 9.1 (dual booting w/W2K Server): First, thanks to Mr. Bathoorn and the list in general for the help in getting my installation to operate efficiently. It's mostly good now, I'm not sure what I did, but I did go to Mandrake Config and turn off CUPS, that seemed to make a big difference. Then I went through and reconfigured most things and, whatever, it's working quickly now. Gnome Monitor still doesn't work -- it still starts the program and then kills itself before it shows the screen (well, actually it's not dead, it's still running, but there's nothing showing). I can live with that by not using it. One other oddity -- when I change the resolution and it offers to test the new resolution, no test appears, I'm just returned to the previous screen. I can't seem to switch away from Gnome to KDE. I've selected KDE in Mandrake Config:System:Interface (or similar), I've played with the Mandrake Config: Boot section, I've played with all the configs I can find and set all to KDE and rebooted, but even though they still say KDE when I check them, Gnome is booted up. I don't want to delete Gnome, I do want to try other interfaces to see which suits me best. I installed 9.1 from disks I burned myself from the Mandrake website. 3 disks were called for, but there were 5 disks. What's on those other 2 disks? I've looked around and can't seem to find descriptions of the disk contents (one seems to be an additional international data, the other is 'extras?). Finally, since it looks like I've no plans for tomorrow (except as subject to change by the /dev/wife), I've been thinking about installing 9.2. Anyone here have bad experiences with this yet? Should I wait 6 months? Since Mandrake 9.2 was released the day after I installed 9.1, would I be doing the linux community a disservice to install 9.2 tomorrow and thus spur the release of 9.3 for Monday? grin Thanks, Max Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Fujitsu L470 very, very slow
I've installed Mandrake 9.1 on my Fujitsu Lifebook L-470 (192M RAM, ESS sound, NeoMagic X128 (iirc) video) and everything seems to be working quite well. This is a PIII (Mobile) 366 Mhz system. But there are two problems which I suspect are related. I've scoured the net and can't find anything relevent, so I'm hoping someone in here can help. The system is very, very slow. It starts out fairly slow and gets worse. It becomes so slow that I can see the screen refreshing (not the several times a second refresh, but there are pauses as the screen changes from one screen to another). The second problem is that the laptop get's quite hot (not the battery area, not the harddrive area, not the memory area, so I'm thinking it's the CPU area). It seems to me that the CPU is overloaded with some process taking more and more of its capacity, and that this is causing it to hot up. What I've tried: I'm running the Gnome GUI, but the same happens in KDE and also if no GUI is used at all (command line only). Gnome system monitor: starts to load, seems to finish loading, then disappears entirely. KDE system guard: loads slowly, once loaded shows nothing on any of the graphs and all the status items on the bottom line (system memory, used memory, etc) read 888. jobs: shows no jobs MMC: there are a number of services, disabling some seems to help, but not cure, the problem. btw, it takes MMC 3+ minutes to open. Ximian opens in about 1 minute, Gnome's web browser (forgive me, I've forgotten the name) takes 2+ minutes to load and each page thereafter is at least 45 seconds. Syslog shows that the system is unable to enable APIC (iirc) because it's disabled in the BIOS and it tries to enable it but fails. I poked around in the BIOS and found nothing which was obviously APIC related, so I suspect that the BIOS is unable to enable it (too old). I did change the BIOS to make all IRQs determined by the OS since that seems to be the function of APIC, no help. When shutting down the OS is unable to dismount the /home resource. It tries 3 times and fails 3 times. I suspect this is because the OS itself is using that resource, but maybe it's related. Any advice on what to look for, or to fix, is greatly appreciated. I hope I've included enough and the right kind of information. Thanks, Max Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] Fujitsu L470 very, very slow
I have installed the driver which corresponds to the video card (by manufacturer and model), I checked that. I have not (nor do I know how to) tweaked the kernal parameters for the bus or drive access. I have turned off various services (using MCC) and it seemed to help, but not one in specific service was obvious. Is there a difference between turning off services and deamons? By fs, do you mean file system? I dunno, I left that portion of the drive unformatted when I installed W2kServ and let the Mandrake install handle the Linux partition. (It's dual boot, 30G Hitachi). Re: [newbie] Samba Question
Gidday Mithrilhall Sorry, I could have given more detail. Samba can have it's own password and user list as well Webmin is a https web browser based administration program which you can use from a win pc To use it point a web browser at https://your_server_ip_address:1 If it's not installed you'll have to do this (I'm a newbie as well) you'll need ssh (secure shell? hence the s in https) as well. If it's installed choose the Servers tab and pick Samba. From there make sure you choose the option to convert unix users to samba users and the option to keep them in sync. (Can't remember exactly the way they've put it) Have a good look around and play but before you do make a backup of the samba conf files, they're somewhere in /etc. Don't forget to scroll down and hit the restart samba button each time you use it or no changes will occur. All this is a bit vague I know but it's all from memory. HTH max Mithrilhall asked Monday, February 04, 2002 Where do I find webmin. I am still very new to Linux. As for users and passwords. I have the same user and password combo on my Linux and Windows XP computer. Max suggested Gidday Mithrilhall I know nothing of XP, but I am using Samba (via webmin). Do you have a samba user of the same name and password? In webmin it's easy, you tell it to convert all linux users to samba users. rgds max I'm setting up Samba and I think I have just about everything perfect. I have a user on the linux computer (Ex. login name: bob password: test) and I have the same user on my Windows XP computer with the same login name and password. When at my Windows XP computer I do a search using the IP of the linux computer and it shows this: Name Folder Comment 192.168.1.3 unknown If I double-click the IP address shown above I get a login prompt and I type in the username bob and the password test but it never logs in. It just keeps giving me the same prompt. If I go to the linux computer and open Network Monitoring I can see that it is sending and receiving but I can't figure out why it's not letting me log in. If anyone can help me with this I would greatly appreciate it. Re: [newbie] backup app for LM 8.0
Gidday Lyvim and Jim (and others) I have to say thank you to you guys for answers to questions I was going to ask soon, and thanks to Mike for asking. rgrds max On Saturday 02 February 2002 18:28, you wrote: Mike, I know how bad it can be when you're starting from ground zero. I had the same problems when I had to learn IBM Dos version 2 from scratch by myself. The syntax can be arcane and hard to understand at times. Plus, the man pages are not oriented to new users. The best source of information for new users are HOWTO resources, which list concrete real world examples, put forth in no nonsense easy to understand format. I appreciate these resources greatly because I did not have them 15 years ago when I got a generous crash course by an asshole administrator. There are many HOWTO's, but after checking I found precious little in the way of tar information. This was a little disturbing, as tar is a heavily used resource in the UNIX world. On discovering this, I empathized with your situation even more. To access this information locally on your system, assuming you've got a Mandrake system and I don't have any reason to assume otherwise, put the following in your browser: file:/usr/share/doc/HOWTO/HTML/en/index.html If by chance the docs are not installed, go to the following net resource: www.linuxdoc.org Since this is a new user's list, there should'nt be any subscribers that have any misplaced preconceptions concerning a list member's foreknowledge about anything regarding Mandrake Linux. Having said that, your original question concerned backup programs. That in itself tells us alot about what you are asking. First, whenever you are talking about a script or utility that does backups, it's generally desirable to be able to grab everything in a given location, plus save permissions and ownership information; not to mention the hidden .dotdirs. That's generally what backup programs do. If you tend to back your stuff up to CDRW like I do, you might want to make a tar.gz archive of your directory. In my case, I like to save the home user's directory to a tar.gz archive, then put it on CDRW temporarily until I've upgraded the system to the next latest distro. The following command will save everything unilaterally and keep all ownership and permissions information verbatim: cd /home tar -zxpvf /tmp/storage/home_dir.tar.gz * If you then want to view what you've done after you complete this, you go to the /tmp/storage directory and type: tar -ztpvf home_dir.tar.gz This doesn't do anything but pull a list of what's in the archive. The z option on the tar command line tells the program to process the archive with gzip, which gives it a respectable compression; saving you alot of space. Hope this gets you started. Email again if you've got further questions. LX shane wrote: tar springs to mind. If I knew how to use tar to backup / or /home I would not have asked the question. would you mind to tell me how to do this ? You will get a warning message about a self certified certificate the first time you run it. Just accept it. Note https not http, and if it does not work check the webmin service is running. Webmin allows you to configure almost every aspect of your computer in a simple manner, and even works remotely. HTH derek Gidday Derek and everyone else I've been using webmin from a Mac and I can't for the life of me, get it to accept the certificate It asks again and again if I want to continue and I can't find anywhere to turn it off. Re: [newbie] internet monitoring
Paul Kraus asked on Thursday Is there a way to setup up Linux so that it restricts access to all internet sites that I don't specify? Can this be done an a user/usergroup setting. Example. I only want some people to only be able to access. www.cnet.com (and all child sites www.cnet.com/*.* ) and I want management to be able to access 5 or 6 more sites. Can I do this with a Linux box between my network and my dsl router? Can I also set it up to had out ip addresses? There is windows software (surf control) that does this same thing but it cost around 2 grand and then you have to have another win2k server setup so all of a sudden my cost for this little task is around 5 thousand. Gidday Paul For the windows machines you could look at Surf Rat. I can't remember if you can set up the sites yourself or if it is a safe surf plugin. Gidday all I have Webmin 0.84 and Mandrake 8.0 When I go to Webmin https://192.168.1.1:1/useradmin/edit_user.cgi (that's .../edit_user.cgi ) I get a page that shows me the heading and no form below it to enter new user information. (I seem to be able to do other things OK like add and delete groups) Has anyone had this trouble before and if so how did you fix it? I went to the webmin site but their bug fixes started at version 0.85 and the was no apparent mention of this problem and searching with google didn't bring anything relevant either. I'm using using IE for mac to access Webmin. When I view the source for the page the html is incomplete and I'm wondering if this is the cause of the problem. [newbie] Problems accessing Samba when having 2 mandrake servers
Gidday Folks I'm just trying to add another linux box to our system. It's to be a samba server. It's got 7.2 on it. Samba appears to be working ok. We have a gateway, firewall, proxy, postfix mail server using 7.2 as well. Somehow samba is being used for the mailboxes on this machine. Now the problem. I can ping both to and from the win98 PCs for the new server but I can't seem to access this PC in any other way. Something on the original box keeps giving me access denied when I try to get the new box. I've been trying to access swat, linuxconf, or webmin by typing in something like 192.168.1.5:1 in a browser from a win98. Where do I start to look? What other info do you need? Re: [newbie] fetchmail config. for more than one collection point
Gidday Frank Like I said I know nothing about fetchmail, and I'm pretty much a newbie, but that would be the first thing Id do to figure out if it's a problem with Yahoo or something else. It seems like something else. Bit weird to let you put more than one address to collect mail from and then not have it work. Pure stab in the dark but have you tried to put set postmaster postmaster set bouncemail set no spambounce set daemon 20 in a second time so that each collection address has it? If that works maybe you could trim lines back out until you find what you need to have in there. Otherwise is there a fetchmail specific list maybe? rgrds max yes,, I did that, then it checked the yahoo and not the other one.. I would take that to mean that one fetchmail rc file could only contain one mail server. but if that is the case, why does fetchmailconf allow you to add as many as you like? rgds Frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Anke Max Sent: Wednesday, 5 December 2001 8:00 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] fetchmail config.. I'm no guru. In a situation where I have something which depends on another and vice versa I put them all into an empty dir and use # rpm -Uvh * This seems to work well. rgds max Hello, gurus! I am using Mandrake 8.1 and I just downloaded the kernel-2.4.13-12mdk.i586.rpm and iptables-1.2.4-2mdk.i586.rpm available in the speakeasy.rpmfind.net site. It depends to one another. So I decided to open my kongueror browser and click the kernel first and automatically installed it using RPM Software Manager. And I was asked if I'll forcely install it and I clicked the YES button. And when it was successfully installed, I also clicked to install the iptables package. Re: [newbie] Still no printing in LM8.1!
Gidday Marcia I have no experience with printing in Linux so this is a long shot. I had untold problems with printing just the odd file on the 14 iMacs at our school and it turned out to be 3 out the many installed fonts just locked up the printer whenever they were used. The error messages I got were in no way helpful and it was mere trial and error to beat it. The errant fonts were something like School...? Needless to say these fonts have been deleted. Maybe this helps rgds max Marcia asked on Wednesday, December 05, 2001 5:39 AM I have been reading everything and doing everything I can think of to get my Epson Stylus Color to work with LM 8.1. I wrote for help about a week ago and nothing that has been suggested has worked. I even reinstalled LM 8.1 and the exact same thing happened again. The printing worked with the test pages then even worked at first with kword and abiword until I changed the default settings. I noticed that it works as long as I do not try to add xpp or change settings. Unfortunately the default settings are not acceptable so I have to adjust but once I do then the printing stops completely. I have checked files and I get messages such as device or resource is busy. Then when I check the queues they show all of my jobs are processing or pending but nothing prints. I am even tempted to get another printer even though I know it is not the printer. I even tried it again in Windows 98 to make sure and of course it works. I am tempted to put my Windows 95 as dual boot on this machine just to get some printing again. If anyone can help with this I will be very appreciative. Thank you. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Re: [newbie] booting in console mode and seeing booting logs to diagnose problem
Gidday Anguo You couldn't download one of those linux on a floppy distro's and boot from that could you? (Tomsboot?) I'm only guessing here. Then you could make the changes you need to and reboot. Also I've read somewhere about a command something like chroot where you can (I think) change from one running kernel to another. Regards Max Anguo asked on Friday, November 23, 2001 6:53 PM for help booting into linux Ouch! I just saw this: http://www.linux.com/howto/LILO-crash-rescue-HOWTO-1.html#ss1.4 You MUST make emergency boot disk from time to time and whenever you make changes to the partition. Insert a blank floppy which, of course, I didn't do... so the partition table on the boot floppy doens't correspond to the existing one. There isn't much change though.. just one more partition cut out of the empty remaining space on the hard disk... What now? - Original Message - ±H¥óªÌ: Anguo I dual boot win98 + Mandrake 8.1 Questions: 1- How can I use the boot disk to boot into the console mode rather than the graphical login? Problem: KDE or any other window manager won't start anymore. The graphic login only has two options: previous and failsafe, neither of which get anything started. There are quite a few error messages that appear during the machine booting sequence. I'd like to see what they are so that I can solve (with your precious help) whatever problem there is. I recently added a new FAT32 partition using diskdrake and then formated it under win98. I needed the new partitions so that I could install office2000. (I unfortunately still need that because of the lacking chinese support under linux - I still haven't been able to get it working properly). I think part of the problem is related to this (something about too many partitions being mounted...). Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Gidday Hugo I've been using part.exe which is a powerful partitioning tool and has a boot manager that is capable of running up to 31 OSs from 31 different partitions http://www.users.intercom.com/~ranish/part/ Could be worth a try? HTH Max - Original Message - From: Hugo Ferreira [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, November 13, 2001 7:15 PM Subject: [newbie] Boot floppy: no initrd.img Hi, First and foremost, I would like to apologise for the lengthy mail, but I am sure those that are willing to help me will find the info. important. Please note that there may be some incorrections because I am on another location/machine at the moment and am writing this from some notes I took at the time. I am newbie at Linux/Unix and attempted to install Mandrake Liniux 8.1 on a AMD 200+ with 64 Mbytes of RAM and two volumes (4 and 1.5 Giba respectivelly). On volume 1 I hada (have?): a) Dos partition of 100 MBytes (for booting) b) FAT 32 w/ Win95 (+/- 2G) c) NTFS (a little less than 2G) On volume 2 was: a) Free for Linux (/dev/hdb) I proceeded with the install and made a boot floppy as per indications and placed the LILO on a dev/hdba1 (dos). Please note that I had attempted installing RedHat Linux on volume 2 and got it working using the loadlin boot (from Win95). I gave up though, because I could not install my devices (hence the install w/ Mandrake 8-}). The Linux volume is partitioned as follows: a) 1.3 Giga for / b) 78 Mega for /swap c) 131 Mega for /home The boot from dev/hdb1 worked fine. The only problem is I lost my NT boot. Lilo indicated 2 OSs: dos and NT. When I select dos, the NT's booting application runs. I then select windows 95 and this executes and boots w/ no problem. When I select NT from either Lilo's on boot.ini's menus, NT fails to boot because NTDETEC fails. Before proceeding with a replacement of the MBR or a reinstalation of NT I tried booting with the floppy. I wanted to do this not to waste another 2 days installing Linux (2 attempts on a very slow machine). This failed! The Lilo session error message is as follows: SysLinux 1.48 MandrakeLinux Copyright 1994-1999... ...boot your LinuxMandrake system from /dev/hdb1... Could not find ramdisk image: initrd.img I atempted to use Mandrake's control center and I also executed the command manually. Any of these attempts produced the same result: the file initrd.img was in the floppy but with size 0. (After some searching) I then proceeded with: mkinitrd --omit-scsi-modules --omit-raid-modules -v 2.4.8-26mdk This generated a initrd.img file which I then copied to the floppy. This worked fine. I can actually boot. When I execute. mkbootdisk --verbose --mkinitrarga --omit-scsi-modules --mkinitrarga --omit- raid-modules --mkinitrarga -v -- device /dev/fd0 --compact 2.4.8-26mdk I get the following result: formatting /dev/fd0... done copy /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.8-26mdk... done Creating initrd image... Rootfs is not ext3, there is no rootfs special options, and no modules are needed-- not building initrd image. done. setting up syslinux... done. Question(s): what am I doing wrong? Is this an indication of more problems? BTW, the machine using KDE seems very sluggish, especially on application booting and I have not been able to isntall all devices (more on that in another e-mail). TIA.
