When I set it at 640x480 some of mandrakes config windows are too large for me to get to the OK buttons. I've spent hours (it seems like) choosing different configurations for the video card and have only got this one to work. The card is an S3 Trio 3d Onboard (86C386). You can pass the parameter vga=normal, either at boot or by adding it to your lilo.conf This will ensure that your system boots without framebuffer. Unfortunately this is not the root cause of the difficulties which you are having. As XFree evolves and new cards and chipsets are become supported a consequence is that some older chipsets/cards are no longer supported. In the case of the s3 Trio64, when using XFree-4.3, Only those cards which have IBM RGB 524, Texas Instruments 3025, or an internal TrioDAC RAMDAC chip have 3d support. AFAIR the latest version of XFree in which your card would be fully supported was 3.3.6 Using XFdrake you can switch to XFree-3.3.6 from whatever 4.x.x version you are now currently running. Though their recent offerings are becoming better I, personally, view with disdain the s3 tag since, as at inception they were a 'base' 'windblows' offering which allowed 'cost-cutting' by computer butchers. In the case of vid cards, though they can at time be a hassle, I will stick with either ATI or NVIDIA, with my preference being ATI. If you have an avaiable AGP slot I would consider a change. If this is a viable option if you contact me off-list I may be able, for a song, to offer you an alternative. If this is not an alternative you may need to consider dropping 3d and using the svga server/driver. I recently downloaded Mandrake 9.1 and was testing it. In installed it and everything worked fine from the install, SVGA, the whole bit. I restarted the computer, and when it got to starting x, that's where it had problems. The normal grey texture came up, ok, and that funny blue background ok, but as soon as it started to display the login box it just appears and before i can really even see it, it goes away and the screen flickers and goes black, and tried to load it again. It does that a few times then goes to console, not giving any errors. I log in and type startx. It loads, and the screen starts with a red baclground, and the KDE taskbar comes up for a couple seconds, then goes away. The scrren at that point stays red. I ran some tests on my video card when i was using windows and it told me: Video driver: DESCRIPTION: S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR MANUFACTURER: S3 Compatible Display Adapter BIOS: 60.00.06 DATE: 09/20/02 I went to the site and downloaded the newest drivers, but no luck. I got some info on their list that the next version is going to have more support for S3 cards. *Or* you could try installing the new MDK 9.2 beta, I think it has a more recent version of XFree...Tom would know more about that than me, but check it out on the MDK site. I just joined the list am late in this thread so I may be off beam but I think there is a problem for S3 Trio with some of the XFree versions. I believe v4.0 and 4.2 are ok, but 4.1 and 4.3 are broken. There are binary drivers available on the S3 site - google get it. HTH Bob Parker Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I'd like to buy a new video card, keeping my current cpu and mainboard; I can also upgrade my K6 II 400 to a K6 II 533, anyway... [newbie] video card replacement/system won't boot
I've been running a dual-boot Mandrake 8.2/Windows system since 8.2 became available. Today, I had to upgrade/replace my old video card because it has gone bad (GeForce 2 with an ATI Radeon 8500.) I'm using a stock kernel and without the NVIDIA 3GL drivers installed, I do not startx at boot time. I can get to lilo and boot in to windows just fine, however, when I try to boot in to linux, linux-nonfb, or failsafe the system freezes. I've also tried reinstalling from cd#1. Any thoughts, any suggestions would be much appreciated. The Windows side boots fine and found all the new hardware. Joe Sotham - Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? You can run the installation in text mode and then try dling and installing the ati2 drivers from gatos and you may be able to get some usability in X. The drivers themselves are very buggy as relates to the 8500 and you will suffer lock-ups and crashes. This is why support for the 8500 was disabled in 8.2 Charles Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] Video Card Support. (Was build PC)
I am thinking about purchasing an ATI Radeon 8500 DV video card, but am unsure. I have looked on the Mandrake site, where there is a lot of known hardware listed. Radeon cards seem to be supported in the kernel, so is it correct to assume that there are no drivers necessary for Radeon cards in general?? While there is a long list of known video cards for both Mandrake 8.0 and 8.1, there does not seem to be a list of video cards as seen at installation time??? Lastly, I am concerned as to whether the TV tuner on the Radeon 8500 DV card is supported in some way in Linux. Does anyone know??? Cheers, Brian Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Video Card Purchase?
I do plan on upgrading my linux version in the future and I read where my card, even if upgraded w/new drivers, will most likely not work on the new Linux version. So, w/out looking at the educational benefits of this process, I'd rather just install a new card that works! That sounds odd - Linux is about as backwards-compatible as they come. I mean some people thought Mandrake were being a bit elitist for not providing i386 support in their standard distro! Unlike some operating systems I can think of, the general rule is that if it works in Linux, it'll always work in Linux. Robin Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Video card troubles
I have been using Mandrake for about a year and most recently 8.1. When I installed 8.1 at home, my video card is reported as another. I am using a STB Velocity 4400 w/ 16MB of RAM, AGP bus. XFdrake reports me using a RIVA 128. When I run a couple of games (quake 3 for linux) the screen stays black until I press Alt+Enter and puts the game in a window mode. When I try to change the card type in XFdrake and restart the X server it always comes back as a RIVA 128 card. 1. Is this a problem? 2. Can I make the changes permanent without hosing my install? 3. Yeah, i think i have the same problem i can't access my gui (i have lnx4win) all i get is a fatal error no screen found error when i type startx. How do i configure my startx so i can detect my card. I thought that with Xfree 4.01 and Mandrake v7.2, if your video card is supported, then you get automagically installed hardware acceleration? Is that not right? It is correct if your video card is decent hardware, but there are a host of cards we expected XFree 4.01 to support where the support is sadly lacking, such as the SiS 530/620 and the 6326 which will work accelerated under 3.3.6 but NOT under 4.01 (ghosts, noise, etc., even without acceleration) One thing that is certain, acceleration is likely to work only at 16-bit color depth. Changing the resolution to a different color depth WILL break it. Civileme Another question; I'm thinking about upgrading soon. Any issues with Via 133 and AMD 751 chipsets? Tyan motherboards? Thanks, all! ;-) Well, the combination of WD 7200 rpm drives and VIA 133, both KX and KT chipsets seems suspect.Furthermore, special procedures are needed to install using the ASUS K7V because the ATA/100 Promise on-board controller is not initially recognized (see the newbie archives for the steps given by gshaw).
Re: [newbie] Video card question?
sure, why not. I have a voodoo5. I use the drivers from http://linux.3dfx.com. They have a very nice step by step on that website with the files that you need right there. Here are my major steps. 1. download files: in my case those are: tdfx_dri-4.0.1-1.i386.rpm tdfx_drm-1.0-3.src.rpm Glide_V5-3.10-2.i386.rpm 2. remove all rpms related to Glide or 3dfx 3. exit X (I boot to init3 so I just log out of windowmaker and I am at a command prompt.) and log in as root. 4. cd /etc/X11 and change name of existing XF86Config-4 file to XF86Config-4.old 5. rpm -Uvh Glide_V5-3.10-2.i386.rpm 6. rpm -Uvh tdfx_dri-4.0.1-1.i386.rpm 7. rpm --rebuild tdfx_drm-1.0-3.src.rpm Sometimes I have to --force and/or --nodeps one of the three packages. 8. cd /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i686 rpm -Uvh tdfx_drm-1.0-3.i686.rpm 9. cd /etc/X11 and change all settings in XF86Config.dri.ex to reflect the entries in XF86Config-4.old (specifically monitor refresh rates, mouse settings and font paths) then cp XF86Config.dri.ex XF86Config-4 10. startx (at which point everything works theoretically) Doing this breaks some of the neat things that mandrake does and some of the applications that are installed. Fine with me as long as I can play Quake3! Hope this helps Paul. Feel free to ask more questions if there was something you were interested in that I missed. Just curious. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Goldenpi Sent: Thursday, September 07, 2000 11:07 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] Video Card It works with most cards. The benchmark program I used was the setup program on screamer 2, which runs some tests on the video card. Its agp x4 Linux is not good for gameing. Networks, internet, programing, all good. But not gameing. Because the person who was writing was interested in gaming, I'd recommend an AGP card all the way. I'd also recommend a dual-boot system. I have had good success with a GeForce 256 DDR. It runs X-Windows 3.3.6 in SVGA mode. I didn't install XFree86 4.0.1 yet, but it has support for nVidia products (at the expence of reduced performance with older PCI cards like ATI Mach 64). nVidia even has Linux drivers on its web site. Anyway, I don't play games under Linux. I run X-Windows, though, and you do NOT need a 3D-card to run X-Windows. nVidia has a good record for me. I believe ATI cards are also good under Linux. I haven't heard anyone trying the Radeon though so I can't say much about it. -- --Arcana

Some of us don't have AGP capability...like me. So, that makes the Voodoo 3 my choice. On Thu, 07 Sep 2000, you wrote: Excuse for asking ... but why are you suggesting PCI? RE: [newbie] Video Card
I only have one off topic suggestion .. have fun =o) theres a ton of cool things out there to try or implement/refine and perfect ... try em all . when you get curious or daring enough, play with some source code (C C++ Perl Python) whatever .. even if you dont know how to code, or leave everything the way it is the cool thing is Linux is the ultimate playground for anyone who wants to actually "use" a computer rather than have an operating system "guide" the user. The learning curve for the operating system *core* looks more like a vertical wall than a curve ... thing is there are a LOT of hands sticking out willing to help if you want them to. If you're careful about steps you take (recovery disks, backups etc) and you ask for help ... .the climb is a rush. Ok enough on topic advice for video cards I believe another poster mentioned the best advice. Choose something that suits what you want to use it for and what resources you already have (Monitor limitations, is this for gaming and playing with OpenGL stuff, do you just need X running etc) I personally am a fan of Loki and support their porting efforts by purchasing their games ported to Linux so I like hitting high frame rates with full effects on and GeForce and a nice 17" .24 monitor do this for me. It al ldepends on what you want =o) Lonny
