It's a project aimed at duplicating Visual studio and the .NET framework. The recently released beta Winforms support, which isn't ready for production use yet, but is fun to tinker with. Winforms are expected to be up to par within the next few months, and once that's the case then Mono will be a viable substitute for VS .NET. All the same the IDE, MonoDevelop, has been slow in development, so if your a newbie looking for ULTRA-easy UI creation, you'd better stick with M$ form designer. But if you need to develop in a production environment, Mono is all you'll need :-). I would also have a look at Transgaming http://www.transgaming.com/ which uses a version of wine called wineX that runs many games under linux. Although it's not free, I run it and it works great. Try using rpm -Uvh wine-20040615- This should upgrade (the U part) the existing wine installation. If this fails urpm -e wine will remove the old one then you should be able to install the new one. NB: the graphical configure tool included only works up to the version before 06152004, but you might not need it anyway, esp. if you are doing a 'no windows' install. Well, Mandrake comes with a wine RPM, you should just need to use the Install Software link, find wine and install it. Once you do, it should install a daemon called wineserver that should automatically pick up any .exe file that you run. You may need to edit your wine config file to actually point to your CD drive among other things, but since those settings are dependent on your system, I am not sure that there is such a thing as an easy howto to tell you how to do it. I can help you get the config setup by asking for pertinent info and sending you a copy of the proper settings to use. If you just want a sample, I can send you a copy of mine offlist, just so that you can go through and see what the settings look like but installing the RPM should get you pretty close to where you need to be. Other options would be to buy Crossover Office or WineX since both include installation routines and have built in installers for applications. So...are there any good Wine for *Complete Dummies* tutorials out there you could recommend? Thanks! My personal recommendation would be to just install the RPM and see where you are at and move on from there. It emulates the windows api and allows windows programs to run under Linux. There are other programs that actually allow windows to run under linux. Win4Lin and VMware are these kinds of programs. Win4Lin is the cheaper option of you only need the Win9x (including WinME) at $89. VMware costs about $300 but actually creates a virtual PC and allows you to run just about any operating system. Both are commercial programs and you need to own a valid license for Windows too. With Wine you don't need a windows license. I personally use Win4Lin and I highly recommend it. It works for a lot of programs, but it's quirky: your program might not run at all, it might run slowly, or it might run fine until you use some obscure feature, then crash. Try wine by all means, but you might first consider looking at the multitude of mail programs for Linux. Whatever features make you like the Bat, you'll probably find somewhere. 11/15/03 Hello All, I have 128MB of RAM. I ran Wine two different ways to see if one of my Microsoft Win95B programs would run. Method 1) change to the Win95 program directory (already installed, this is a dual boot Win95B and Mandrake 9.1 system.) Run Wine with the program name. I got an out of memory error. Method 2) Point Wine at the cdrom installation disk for the Windows program and run Wine on the setup file. I had to select Reinstall as the installation choice since I hadn't uninstalled the program. The reinstall goes okay, but when it comes up to run the program I get the same out of memory error. I will soon try to migrate all of my PC stuff to Linux based programs as I want to get windows off my pc ASAP. I want to use Photoshop and a few other programs like Acid and Sound Forge. If I had the cash I would get Crossover Office but I don't so any links or help would be much appreciated. There is a mailing list for wine-users which can be subscribed to at http://www.winehq.com/mailman/listinfo/wine-users -- wine developers also answer questions there. There are two issues with regard to Wine. Since it's alpha software, one issue is to get it properly working. Did you run winecheck after compiling and installing source? That will identify possible areas where your Wine may be having trouble. The second issue is getting your applications to work under Wine. Not everything does. Not every dll and api for MS-Windows has been created. If your software needs something that hasn't yet been done, it probably won't work well, assuming that it works at all. You might inquire on Wine lists if anyone else has gotten your program favorites to work. A major advantage offered by CodeWeavers is the fact that their developers are paid to work on those problems. If they take on your software, it is guaranteed that it will be able to work (because they make certain all the dlls and apis it needs are created). It is possible to interest developers on the Wine lists in your software, but they are doing it as volunteers and they will need a lot of input from you in order to succeed. Whether or not you get your programs to work under Wine has a lot to do with how much time and effort you're willing to put into it. I've had no problem with getting Wine itself to work, however, and to run quite a few programs, though not all that I would like it to run. did you copy the config file from the soruces to your $HOMR/.wine/? you can find
it in the documentation/samples/ folder. create a folder called .wine(this is
a hidden folder) in you home dir and put the config file into it.
you have to edit this things to your mountpoints:

Hi I've been through the howto on wiki but I'm still having difficulties I copyed the required dlls from my XP installation and used the latest version of wine from where the artical recommended. I managed to install Kazaa (some of the fonts were a bit funny) but it would just gointo debug mode when I tried to run it I then tried copying all my dll files over into wine but that had even more dire consquences ie kazaa wouldn't even install So to the people who have wine working: What dlls did you use. Which folers did you put them in (system or system32) and what did you pop into your wine configuration file? Also is it recomened to use winex from transgaming for games? Or is there an alternative? Hi Mike, In general, I've not found any issues as such between Mandrake Linux and Wine. I have Wine working on Mandrake 8.1 and 9.1 systems. In both cases, the applications I use Wine for were installed on a Win98SE partition before Linux was installed on the box. I'm using the default setup with only Wine dlls (builtin) for mswindows. The applications, of course, use their own (native) dlls. I haven't booted up mswindows for ages and do everything that I need with those programs via Wine under Linux. I do have a rule of thumb for dealing with all things Linux, however. I check first to make sure that something really isn't working before I start scouring How Tos to fix it. My experience with Linux is that it's easy to wrongly conclude something isn't working, and fixing something that isn't broken can lead to big headaches. There are two separate issues with Wine: Is your Wine installation okay? And, what are the particular needs of each application you want to run under it? Wine doesn't run everything. IF you are dead set on getting a copy of Windows onto that laptop I know of one easy way to do it. I also can ftp you a copy of w98 if you wish. Copy from the W98 Dir (Using ftp if you must) to the laptop the Windows Setup directory onto the laptops hard drive. Boot with boot diskette to an DOS prompt. Enter the dir you copied your setup files to, run setup.exe. Done. Win98 is stupid enough to install from HDD. Win2k is too... Dunno about XP but your hardware is old enough i suspect that isn't an issue. Thanks a lot, Femme. I already managed to get my hands on a CD with Win98 SE (hence the late reply). It's an OEM edition but i will give it a try. Now, my problem is to create a boot-floppy. If I understand you correctly, there is a setup directory on the CD, so I'll follow your advice once I have a boot floppy. Maybe I'm a little nave : I've been browsing around this OEM CD to find a Windows equivalent of Linux's rawrite and a boot image, but with no luck. As someone suggested I'll try to pull one off the net. I guess, that getting win98 onto this old Thinkpad is my best option for my daughter. That way her *main* PC can stay *clean*. So in the path, just use the c:\program files\someappname and wine will see to it that it gets put in the right place. I see those dir's in my tree. No succes though to install the #%$ program *derive*. Then I tried to install the Crossover suite. It brought me a little further and actually installed the app. However, when trying to run it, it exits with the very informative message : *unknown error*. Hmm... I think I'll give up. Maybe I can buy an old Windows-box for my daughter just to run that app, because the info says it'll run on everything (winders, that is) from 9.x to XP (whatever that is). Try this WinTools GUI set up aid: http://www.franksworld.net/winetools/ It will make all the necessary directories and has an Installer of sorts. There is some additional education on the site. Be aware that wine is a work in progress. There are new RPM's built nearly every day. Check WineHQ http://www.winehq.com/. I'm trying to install kazaa using wine on my mdk9.1 but I receive a file_set_error: No such file or directory fixme:ntdll:RtlNtStatusToDosError no mapping for 0001869f during the kazaa's setup process. I googled and figured out that these mdk rpms are broken. So, I downloaded other rpms but I receive a Segmentation Fault when starting wine (I tried more than one rpm). I installed WINE from the 9.1 cd's, but I suppose i have to set up some sort of 'fake' directory structure where I can install programs. All this wine talk made me curious enough to install the latest and try to run the last program keeping me with a windows box. Act! Problem: I installed the RPM wine-20030618-mdk9.1.i586.rpm without a problem. Now..How do I configure and use the program? I know, RTFM. [newbie] wine device driver.exe
Hello, I have cheap camera Samsung digimax 130. It isn't supported by Linux. Is it possible to use it via Wine? At least this driver exe installed in Wine-c, I just move it there and then #wine 130.exe and #wine setup.exe and windows like wizards popped up and didn't give ane errors and stopped to this windows claim now you must reboot :) Little while I thought is it really gonna reboot :) But now when I connect camera to usb, I still don't reconize it anyhow? Is it possible to use any device via Wine? Or is it just designed for programs? Is there by the way any fear of w32 viruses? It crossed my mind when I saw how well this exe installed? Hi, IANAL-s :-) There is an old Win95 comp in my network. Legal setup. Now I want to run a Windows program (certain bookkeeping soft) in a Linux box in the same network using Wine. Is it legal to point Wine Windows folder to this Win95 box using Samba? Or is it compulsory to use only Wine versions of DLLs. It works well technically, I have tested it. You only have it installed on one box, so it may be, but certainly on later apps M$ say that you may not use them networked, so you may be caught out on that one. I have incountered a problem trying to run wine with my Mandrake 9.0 distro. When I try to run a .exe file by sat typing...wine startup.exe it attempts to load then I am left with a black screen. Unless you are fairly savvy with Linux you are likely to get frustrated with 'Standard Wine' from Winehq. It needs to be configured ,and the configuration for one Windows application does not always suit another. You are more likely to have success with the Wine version distributed by Codeweavers (http://www.codeweavers.com/technology/wine/ ) It comes with quite a nice GUI to configure it. If you simply want your Windows applications to Just work the best way to do it is to put your hand in your pocket and pay for either a copy of Codeweavers Office which is a Wine release verified to run many Windows office applications like Word and Quicken, or else subscribe to www.transgaming.com for an edition of Wine which will play some Windows games. In both cases you should check that the Windows apps you want to use are actually supported. Not sure about your problem, but it might be that you're not providing the full path of the exe. file. For example, in order to run MS Access I use: wine /mnt/windows/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office/msaccess.exe (Note the quotes!). The things I've used (Word, Access and Excel) also seem to behave better if Run in Terminal.(You get a normal sized window, nonetheless) Hope this is some help. [newbie] wine, Mappoint 2003 installation issue
I edited the ~/.wine/config file and it looks good according to winhq.com's site. I started the isntallation with /mnt/cdrom/setup.exe, it wanted to install IE5, i selected the standard option. It started installing stuff and then came up with this message: System Files Update Setup Error 1311. Source file not found: D:\OSP\1033\OSP1.CAB. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it. RETRY CANCEL with this following message in the background: Installation: installation progress bar current action: copying new files copying file: agentanm.dll CANCEL So i cd'd to mnt/cdrom/osp/1033/ and OSP1.CAB is not there, it sees osp1.msi. I tried to install the MSI and it came back with permission denied. The file is owned by root, i was logged in as root to run the MSI. I dont see anything on google or winhq about this. Any thoughts? Hi again, Got a prob in wine which I have just installed from the tarball. wine: error while loading shared libraries: libntdll.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. Checked in /etc/ld.so.conf but found /usr/local/lib already there. Even so I still ran ldconfig -v just to be sure and now I get this message when trying to work with wine: wineserver: chdir /home/andrew/.wine: No such file or directory Anyone knows whats going on? No windows partition at all.. now.. lets say I wanted to make a disk image inside my current linux setup, and run win apps.. and I want it to be opensource.. Well my experience has been that the only open source option is wine, however wine is not so stable and requires a lot of fiddling to get it to work, and it is not so fast. VM ware is not for everyone, if you are testing on many OSes it probably is the best choice. I don't know all thats out there but for explorer and similar apps Crossover office works fine. Well, there's a rumour that the latest wine release can do MS Office pretty well. However i have not tried it (i don't have windows installed, so...) you could give it a shot and see for yourself.
