[newbie] boot log...

Hello,

I am doing my best to locate the log with all the messages 
appearing during the boot sequence, but I couldn't find it 
in... /var/log/
Where can I read again what was printed on the screen during 
the bootup sequence?

[newbie] Mandrake 9.2 to 10.0: Upgrade or fresh install?

Hello,

I have 9.2 which is fairly customized and I don't really 
want to loose all this with a fresh 10.0 install. I WILL 
back up and make notes on the most important stuff I have 
in /usr and /var that would be lost during a reformating of 
the drive, but a flawless upgrade would make many things 
easier.

Have any of you attempted to upgrade from 9.2 to 10.0 
(powerpack/official)? 
How did it go?

Any reasons why I should consider doing a fresh install 
instead?

You say KDE 3.2.6? I just had a look at 
http://www.kde.org/download/ and they only offer 3.2 to 
download with a kmail patch. 
Maybe KDE 3.2.6 is a mandrake specific, not KDE official 
release of KDE.?

Does Mdk 10.0 include the Kmail patch: kmail has a couple of 
critical bugs and I want my emails to be safe.

It boots (part 1,2,3...) but then the screen becomes black 
and I have a message at the bottom saying:

I then fail to notice anything happening.
I am supposed to wait how long?

I have now been able to get my new kernel working, and X and 
3D acceleration. 

I have noticed that NVIDIA_kernel, just like the kernel, are 
installed side by side but the NVIDIA_GLX are upgraded. 

So the answer is no: we cannot have 3D accelerations in both 
kernels with the nvidia drivers.

[newbie] upgrading nvidia kernel in a safe way...

Hello,

At last, I've come around to upgrading my kernel, after 
upgrading all the other applications to 9.2 when it came 
out. I got a fright when mandrake wouldn't boot (actually, 
it did but X didn't start, which comes to the same for me).

My lilo.conf was a bit mixed up, but I managed to boot with 
the rescue cd and modify it, so that I can now boot with 
the old kernel.

From searching the archives of this list and doing a lot of 
reading, I know that kernel images are installed side by 
side. So now I have:
vmlinuz-2.4.22-21mdk
vmlinuz-2.4.21-0.13mdk

My question concern the nvidia driver. I have downloaded 
from the club:  
NVIDIA_kernel-2.4.22.21mdk-4496-2.2.92mdk.i586.rpm

but I am hesitating to urpmi it, because I don't understand 
how it would affect my current setup.
If after installing the nvidia driver, there are any 
problem, I need to be able to boot with the old kernel (the 
one I am using now). I don't want to be in a situation 
where the new one doesn't work and the old one got broken 
because of conflicting nvidia driver version. 

I am not sure I express myself clearly here: 
Are the different versions of nvidia kernel modules 
installed side by side, like the kernel is?

If I install the new module to use with the new kernel, will 
I still be able to use the old nvidia driver with the old 
kernel (a configuration that I know is working now)?

If things go wrong, what would I then need to do in order to 
be able to boot and use X (my lifeline to get help...).?

Lilo.conf is now setup to boot with the old kernel by 
default, but an option for the new kernel exists too. How 
should I modify it to select specific versions of nvidia 
drivers for each kernel image?

 If you install the Nvidia RPM while booted into that
 particular kernel version, you should be fine. It will
 install the Nvidia module/driver into the appropriate
 kernel, leaving the other alone.

I'd like to make sure I understand properly what you mean:

I am using current_kernel with current_nvidia_driver.

I have 
   installed new_kernel and 
   downloaded new_nvidia_driver.


X won't start with new_kernel, so I am using current_kernel.


you mean that I should boot with new_kernel, and from the 
console do urpmi new_nvidia_driver. I should NOT do it from 
current_kernel. 

After having done so, I will still have the choice in LILO 
to boot 
EITHER 
 with current_kernel and current_nvidia_driver 
OR 
 with new_kernel with the newly installed
 new_nvidia_driver.

Thus, even if the new_nvidia rpm is badly corrupted, I WILL 
still have a working X running or current_kernel.


Is this what you mean?

(I used to try things before asking questions, and I have 
badly trashed my system in the past, leaving me unconnected 
and helpless. This time, I prefer to make sure that I will 
do things correctly).

I did as you said.

The good news is that the old kernel still boots properly 
(as you see, I am still writing to you...) 
The bad news is that the new one still won't start X.

# rpm -qa | grep NVIDIA

X doesn't start with the new kernel.

same graphic card and monitor.


I will buy at least one new computer sometimes next year, 
for my business. I will make some research about 
alternative video cards which won't require binary only 
drivers...

you mean I should change Driver nvidia to Driver nv???
What's the difference?


 There are two nvidia driver versions , the rpm and the
 tar ball, the rpm gives you the proprietry nvidia boot
 splash, the tar ball doesn't,  both need the above
 modification, or did when I last did it in M9.1. Either
 way , I think the rpm installs on desktop is OK in which
 case do the text modification there, but the tar ball has
 to be out of X windows at a root consul, and you will
 need to do the edit form there, something like MC, or if
 you can fathom it vi.


I installed the rpm:
NVIDIA_kernel-2.4.22.21mdk-4496-2.2.92mdk.i586.rpm

I now have two kernels (the one that comes with 9.1 and the 
latest one for 9.2) and the two corresponding nvidia-kernel 
drivers.

X doesn't start with the new kernel.

  That's right

 Actually it's not right (but not wrong, either) nv is
 the generic nvidia- driver that comes with XFree86.
 nvidia is the proprietary driver delivered by Nvidia
 themselves and uses the kernel module.

 nv works quite well but doesn't offer hardware
 acceleration. If the existing XFRee86Config-4 says
 nvidia and you've got X going, means you installed the
 kernel-drivers and are using them. If it doesn't work you
 can always use nv which doesn't require extra drivers.

Yes, I just tried and effectively, with nv, X now starts 
with both kernel images but tuxracer and other 3D apps 
won't run anymore. 

So, now, I have the choice: either an updated kernel, or 3D 
games :-|

Thanks to all who responded in this thread (Pablo, Joe, 
HarM, Adolfo, Robin, John, Dennis...)

It's getting confuser and confuser... so beside the new 
kernel and the new nvidia driver, it seems that I also need 
the corresponding new nvidia-glx driver, which I just found 
in the club repository... 

I will install it and see how it goes (i may not have time 
to do so today though: my week end is over and I'm back to 
work for the next six days).

As always, my primary concern is to be left with a broken 
box I cannot log into (X, that is). I think I have learned 
enough in this thread to manage should a problem arise.

I'll look at the glx driver issue, but meanwhile, here is 
the output. If I am missing something, or should pay 
attention to something specific, your comments are 
appreciated.

Despite my best efforts at doing some research and asking 
questions, I still failed to setup a few important things 
on my computer. 
I am getting short of time too.

I have therefore purchased some support units and created a 
few incidents at mandrake expert. 

I need some expert support on the two following items:

73630 winmodem setup
73674 networking two mandrake computers

Later on, I will also need a real expert on file system to 
recover a badly corrupted FS. 

I know many of you, great girls and guys, are happy to 
provide support for free but I currently prefer the 
mandrake expert format, where I can have all my incidents 
stored in one place and the access to experts dedicated to 
see me through one problem. 

Even though I am not as wealthy as Bill Gates or Linus 
Torvald, I still have more money than time, so if some of 
you believe that the standard price for one incident is not 
a fair retribution for your help on one topic, let me know 
*beforehand* how much you'd think is fair and we can 
arrange a payment through paypal or something else. That's 
especially true for FS problem: the solution may be a long 
pain-staking process that can span many hours over many 
weeks.

I am trying to connect two computers together and share an 
internet connection.

I have been reading over and over again the two following 
documents:

Sol runs Mandrake 9.2, has two ethernet cards, one connected

Terra runs Mandrake 9.1, has one ethernet card connected to 
Sol via a crossover cable.

on both Sol and Terra, I have:

# cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1   localhost
10.0.0.10   sol.lan sol

On Sol, I have:

# route -n

On Terra, I did the following: 
Drakconnect  wizard  lan  
IP 10.0.011
Mask: 255.255.255.0

Host name: terra.lan
zeroconf host name: 
DNS server: 201.131.41.10

 open a terminal as su/root on terra and type:

 route add default gw xx.xx.xx.xx  (where xx.xx is sol's
 IP)

Which IP? 10.0.0.10 or 191.161.1.0?
The former didn't help and the latter brought the message:
SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable.


Also, I just noticed that I got unsubbed from the list 
newbie. The archives don't list anything beyond the 15th of 
november. I just resubbed to the list and yours is the 
first message I receive from the list. 
Could you forward other replies I may I received in this 
thread up to now.
Does anyone know of a fully functional mail archives for

[newbie] home network Mandrake howto

Hello,

I have not been able to find a simple step by step howto for 
home networking. So far, I have absolutely no experience in 
networking, or any IP address stuff.

Right now, I have a friend's computer at home and I would 
like 
1- to share the internet connection with my own computer's 
adsl.
2- be able to do file transfer from one computer to the 
other.

To start with, I am not sure I have all the required 
hardware: I don't have a hub or (obviously) a dedicated 
server.

My computer has two ethernet cards, one being connected to 
my adsl modem. 
My friend's computer also has an ethernet card.
What I did is connect my second ethernet card to the second 
computer's card directly, with a cable running from one 
card to the other. I am not sure that's the proper way to 
do it... all the beautiful graphs I find on the internet 
picture little box, whatever it's called, that sits between 
the two computers. I don't have that and I don't know if it 
is possible to connect the two computers the way I did.

Next, I tried to run the configuration wizard in MCC on both 
computers, on mine to share the internet connection, and on 
my friend computer to set a LAN connection, but so far no 
good.


I am not sure what I am missing and I can't find a mandrake 
specific step by step howto.

[newbie] Firewall questions/ mlDonkey won't connect to servers

Hello.

I urpmi'ed mldonkey but it won't connect to any server. It 
will find files, but will fail to download them.

In MCC, I put down the firewall for testing purposes (to the 
question which services would you like the internet to 
connect to? I ticked everything (no firewall)  (after 
testing, I did put the firewall back).

In webmin, I also have this rule: 
Accept If protocol is TCP and source port is 4660:4666

but I still cannot connect to any server.

Please advise.

I am a complete newbie as far as firewalls are concerned and 
I fail to see how the mcc firewall and the webmin firewall 
interact. One look so simple (just untick all the boxes in 
mcc) while the other looks so complex for a newbie.
What if both are setup? Which one takes precedence? Will 
they conflict?

How can one test the firewall?

[newbie] Changing monitor

Hello,

I currently use an old 14' CRT monitor and I'd like to 
change to a new 15' or 17' LCD monitor.

I can find information on configuration, but what do I do 
when I want to switch from one monitor to the other? 
Do I turn off the computer, make the switch and Mandrake 
will notice the new monitor at boot and configure it (the 
checking for new hardware is on at boot). Or should I boot 
in console mode, without X and configure the new monitor 
from the console.

Can you provide some pointers to the general procedure to 
follow is such a situation.

[newbie] Do you have a 17' LCD monitor (or 15' one)?

Hello,

Do any of you use a 17' LCD monitor?
Which one?
If not, do you have a 15' one?
Which one?
Have you been able to configure a nVIDIA graphic card with 
it?
Which one?

Linux support for the latest technologies and most recent 
hardware tend to be lacking.
My brother has not been able to install the nVIDIA drivers 
to go with his 17' inch LCD monitor, so, as a complete 
newbie, he had to give up the powerpack to install with the 
free download edition. He told me that there is not option 
for 17'monitors during installation, so he couldn't select 
his monitor. 

I'd like to change my 14' CRT monitor for a 17' LCD one, but 
I'd like to see if anyone had any luck with them before I 
buy one. 

(My brother's setup:
monitor: Nec Multisync LCD 1760nx
card: nVIDIA GeForce 4 MX440)

[newbie] Loosing Chinese users?

This was posted by jeff at MandrakeClub. Does anyone knows 
more about it??? 



If this is the last one before 9.2 final, I am sure Mandrake 
will lose most users from Taiwan and Hong Kong. They will 
switch to RedHat for much better Chinese support.
 
 9.2rc1 and rc2 are not able to show Traditional Chinese at 
all because only Simplied Chinese fonts are installed. I 
have already filed this issue in Bugzilla and I hope there 
is another release candidate to fix this.
 
 About 2 years ago, Mandrake was much better in Chinese 
support in comparison with other distributions. However, 
RedHat have surpassed Mandrake in Chinese support nowadays 
that has made many Traditional Chinese user switch to 
RedHat. Less and less people have took part in forum on 
Mandrake. The prospect of Mandrake among Chinese Linux 
market may be not optimistic.

FYI, Red Flag is a communist chinese distribution. The 
commies use simplified chinese, which I read work well in 
9.2rc2. So you may have got an broken-English Red Flag from 
them, but they get a good simplified chinese Mandrake.

If you read better the original post, you'd know that what's 
lacking is traditional chinese used in HK and in the other 
China, the free and democratic one (republic of china) in 
Taiwan. Maybe you belong to the group of people who believe 
that there is only one china instead of two and that 
maoist-communism = free-market-democracy. 


I sometimes wish I had the know-how to do my own distro. I 
may have to learn anyway, if I want to make sure I get what 
I need. The local taiwanese distro is not up to speed. I am 
not even sure it still exists (Linux?).

[newbie] supported Hardware list

nvidia drivers) went fine.

It may have been the screen saver, though it doesn't seem to 
be properly configured. Moving the mouse would not have

like a diagnostic tool. The partition table has been messed 
up with (in particular the FS type)... :-( 
So I need to figure out, not what the partition table, but 
what the FS was when the partition was created and used.

Also, following some crashes and unfortunate recovery 
attempts, three secondary ext2 partitions have merged into 
one bigger one. I know where the first one starts and where 
the last one ends but not where they have merged. As a 
result this (big) partition will not mount either, even 
read only. 

What I really need is more info on some diagnostic and 
recovery tool that may be available...

[newbie] apache update unsuccessful

Hello,

I have been made aware of the Apache server security issue.
I read the following security advisory:

I followed the instructions, downloaded the rpm's and under root run the 
command:
rpm -Fvh *.rpm

but I got several error message (see below). I really don't know where to take 
things from here. I am googling the web, but so far, no clue.

The funny thing is that, after having run the command once, now I only have 
this:

[newbie] single user boot: i still cannot change root password

I upgraded the security level of my mandrake 8.2 box from the lowest to the
intermediate (3) level.

Now I don't have access to any user, including root, because my passwords
are all expired. I couldn't su to root and couldn't shutdown the box
(ctr+alt+del didn't respond). I was stuck with the graphical login and had
to press the reset button :-( , messing the filesystem...

I googled the internet to find out how to boot as a single user and change
the root password. Here is what I did.

lilo linux runlevel 1
or
lilo linux single
didn't help. The file system is messed (du to hard reset) and I am faced
with the alternative of either supplying the root password (which I don't
have) for maintenance or press ctr+D to do a normal start, which brings me
back to the stallemate above...

(btw, is there any difference between:
linux runlevel 1   ,
linux init 1   and
linux single  ?)

I then tried:

lilo linux init=/bin/sh rw

which gave me an init prompt.

I typed su and without asking for a password, I got the root prompt:
[root@(none) / ]#

I located the passwd command in the filesystem and tried it:
# ./passwd root
./passwd: permission denied.
I have the same result at the init or root prompt.

I then tried to modify the /etc/passwd file to erase the root pass (as I
read I could do when I googled the web).
vi didn't work but I found a vim-minimum in the filesystem and used it to vi
/etc/passwd but the file was read only and any attempt to write it failed.

Another note that might be important: the /usr filesystem was not mounted
and I didn't mount it because the filesystem got corrupted and trying to
mount it would have brought plenty of error messages and I wouldn't have
known what to do).

So: I lost my root password (not that I forgot it but it unexpectedly got
expired!)
I could login and su to root as a single user but still could do anything
about it!

Beside getting me back my user and root password, I'd like to know if it is
possible to switch back to a lower security level... I cannot manage my box
at a higher level

[newbie] Where's my E: drive (after reinstalling Mandrake).

I have three partitions under win98: hda1 (c:) hda9 (d:)  and hda4 (e:)
(if you want to know why I still have windows, you may read this:

I had to reinstall Mandrake 8.1 and since then, windows won't read hda4 (e:)
I run linux/fdisk and found out that the type for hda4 was set to hidden
FAT32.
Still with fdisk, I t to change the type from 1b to b (FAT32), w to  write
the table and exited.
If I reboot to linux, the changes are still there.
But when I boot win98, the partition e: is still not available...
When I go back to linux after having booted win98, I notice that the
partition table has changed back: the type for hda4 has come back from b to
1b. I have no such problems for my c: and d: drive, hda1 and hda9.
Since I reinstalled mandrake, windows seems to be willing to hide hda4 from
me. It's funny because the content is visible from linux. What's the point
in having a windows partition visible only from linux and not from windows
itself.

Does anyone have a clue?

and so on.
but i don't know if it is relevant at all...

does this mean that you can now enter your system?

precisely not. I can't. the graphical login is a hindrance right now because
it won't start any window manager and it won't allow me to reboot under
console mode (there was such an option with 8.0 but apparently, it's gone
under 8.1)

If I can't find a way to boot into linux, the only other solution will be
for me to reinstall.
I could do that. It'll take only time. But I'd rather use the opportunity to
learn new skills.

  2- Where can I then see the logs of the booting sequences.

 i vaguely remember that its in a file named dmesg (somewhere in /var)
and
 that you can display it by invoking dmesg.

 somebody (look for iain if im not mistaken) in the sylpheed
 [sylpheed.good-day.net] mailing list (he works in hongkong or somewhere
near)
 who has written an informative guide (albeit a work in progress) about how
he
 did configure his linux system to display chinese characters. I was hoping
that
 I could apply it to display japanese characters but nothing so far.

Chinese is 80% ok...
Last time I could boot Linux, it displayed chinese quite properly (even
though the font is hard to read). Chinese support has actually improved
between 8.0 and 8.1. The xcin chinese input program seems at last to work
properly... but it's the 20% missing that prevent me from doing any job in
chinese under Linux... like when I input chinese in Kmail, it displays
trash... that's why I still use Outlook Express! :-(


To come back to my primary question, I'll look a bit more around and in the
howtos online, but if I don't find the answer and if nobody is able to help
me here, then I'll do a clean install once more.

You MUST make emergency boot disk from time to time and whenever you make
changes to the partition. Insert a blank floppy
which, of course, I didn't do... so the partition table on the boot floppy
doens't correspond to the existing one. There isn't much change though..
just one more partition cut out of the empty remaining space on the hard
disk...

[newbie] lm8.1 won't boot up properly after adding new partition.

What would it take to solve this problem?
Would reinstalling lm8.1 be quicker and easier?

The situation seems pretty bad and a search on google makes me even more

[newbie] dual linux distro boot.

I wonder:

has anyone ever installed two or more different linux distro on a single hard 
drive and set lilo to dual/triple/whatever boot?

You don't need to tell me how to do it just yet: I have some documentation 
here that I am gonna read first. 

Actually the only doc I have is an article by a Simon   N goodwin without any 
web references. A search on google about multilinux or several linux distro 
installed on the same box didn't give any result. No how-to, no nothing. Just 
this printed article. 

The only documentation is about dos + linux dual boot or Windrowse + linux 
dual boot but not linux + linux dual boot (in my case that would be mandrake 
as primary OS plus one or both of the two local distro: CLE or Linpus). 

I will read the win+linux dual boot doc anyway: I guess that most of the info 
is relevant all the same. 

I wish to be able the compare different distro at the same time, especially 
since I don't seem to be able (yet) to properly configure Mandrake so that it 
does what I want it to do with Chinese. 

I was thinking that either CLE  or Linpus would have better chinese support 
all around. 

I will read my doc carfully and plan for success.

Meanwhile I was curious about whether anyone else on the list has attempted 
that before. 

Did the installation go smoothly?
How, in practical terms, do you use this setup for?
How do the different distro interact together?
Do you need one /home/user/ for each distro, or can you use the same for all?

I assume you are using KDE. 
Go to the KDE Control Center (click on the icon of a screen with a green coat

(Italian). You can choose another layout (french, british or whatever) so 
that you can easily can switch from one to the other.


- 2) there must be a conflict between the Mac and the Mandrake
- clock, one of the two is running two hours in advance, no
- possibilities to set them at the same time; any ideas ?

No it's not a virus... or rather a virus of a peculiar kind which is commonly 
called spam... 
The symbols you saw are chinese characters encoded in Big5.
You could view them if you have chinese traditional fonts installed, under 
big5 encoding.
You are right, the last line are phone numbers, the first one for someone in 
Taipei, Republic of China, and the second one is a mobile phone number.

I am afraid that my countrymen are very good at sending spam to everyone...

I had the same problem as you. 

On a pentium 120mhz 32mb ram, the install didn't ask for the second cd. I did 
run mandrake but many applications were missing and software manager wouldn't 
run on such low resources.

On a duron 750mhz 256mb ram, I had no such  problem.

I guess there's no way around it. Just install manually what you need on your 
old box.

- I'm reinstalling 7.2 on a pretty old box (Eve - 266 MHz PII, 32MB Ram,
 junker - Everex Monitor, etc) and I am not getting asked whether or not I
 have the other - cds (I have the boxed version with 7 cds).  I started an
 install on the - computer right beside it (Speedy Gonzalez - 866MHz PIII,
 256 MB Ram, etc) and - I got prompted about the other cds right off without
 any trouble.  So my - problem is I can't install all the packages and
 software I want and need - because it doesn't ask me for the other cds that
 are ready and waiting to be - used.  Two points of note:

- 1.  It did the same thing the first time I installed it (on Eve, Speedy
 was - and has always been fine), I just want to take advantage of this
 reinstall to - get it right.  (original install was a week or so ago, for
 what it's worth) -
- and 2.  I get warned about being low on system resources at the beginning
 of - the install, but I completed it with the graphical installation when I
 - originally installed the system, even tested X a few times without ever -
 hanging.  I can go through a text install but I don't get prompted for it
 there - either.

Since Bill helped me to acertain that my Duron CPU is a i686, and since I am 
running the default Mandrake 8.0 version for i586, (and since 8.1 would 
allow me to print chinese, which is not possible with 8.0), I guess I should 
be looking forward to upgrade to the Mandrake 8.1 i686 edition.

But what's the difference?
Does this mean that my current distro doesn't use the full capacity of my cpu?
Would the system run faster/better with the i686 edition?

- series is Pentium-class, and so is 1586 compatible.

yes xcin is the input method you use when you press ctrl+space. It is not the 
size in kedit that bother me but the size in the little box when I input 
chinese.
I have a 14'' monitor and it really looks small and I haven't yet found a way 
to increase the font size. 
It's not yet at the top of my priority list though, so I'll see later about 
that. 


- I don't know xcin well, so I don't know whether it supports Unicode or not.
- However, from my sense, there is no Unicode character's input method yet.

no xcin doesn't support unicode. 
RedHat uses CLE but I'm not sure about CLE. 
I think I'll make my computer a dual boot with mandrake and Redhat chinese 
edition so I'll be able to compare the two as far as chinese/unicode support 
is concerned... but that isn't at the top of my priority list either... ;-)



- In fact, I am struggling with printing Chinese documents under Mandrake
 8.0. - I am trying to ask CLE team and people regarding ZH-L10N.
- If 8.1 solves this problem, I'll give it a try when I get it.

Yes, you might want to wait another two months for the new release or, if you 
are in a hurry, install the new ghostcript on your current distro. (ask 
Civileme about what exactly to install).

- I want to use Mandrake Linux as the desktop OS. I hope I can consider and
- operate
- it this way.

Not many people in taiwan seem to be using linux as a desktop os. 
Most linux users here use linux as a server os.

I am not very familiar with rpm... I have been avoiding to install 
manually... 
So I hope someone will be able to give you some advice.

As far as software manager is concerned, I had very similar problems... worse 
actually. This program seems to be a hog and resources hungry because it has 
to load a bid database so that it can opperate. 
I first installed mandrake on a pentium 120mhz with 32mb ram... and kde was 
not so happy about it. Software manager hanged up at the very start, while 
drawing the first screen. 

Your 64mb ram do not seem to be much. If I were you, I'd seriously consider 
upgrading to 128mb ram, possibly 256mb. 
I now run mandrake on a duron 750mhz with 256mb ram and I am happy! :-D

you say you use lnx4win to run mandrake. Does this mean that your 
mandrake/linux runs under windows???
I believe you loose all benefit of having linux if that's true. Dual boot 
with linux and windows each having their own partition would be much better.


Anyway, go for more memory: windows and kde are very hungry for resources. 
Either that or run another xwindows gui build for low end computers.

Do you use xcin?
I don't find it user friendly and the input box is too small so I don't see 
the characters that  I am typing. As a result I avoid typing in chinese...

Do you know if there is a way to use Unicode instead of big5...?
I need unicode badly but xcin doesn't support it. 

Also, can you print anything in chinese with mandrake 8.0?
I can't but Civileme told me that it wouldn't be a problem with 8.1.

Do you still use Micrappysoft? 
I don't anymore. I don't even have it. 
I use linux mandrake for everything and nothing else for the rest...

I use lm8.0 and kmail 1.2 and konqueror 2.1.1 too... 
URLs in kmail are indeed highlighted and I can click on them and the linked 
web page will start in konqueror. 
Why doesn't it work for you?

I think it means that the system was not properly unmounted, as when you do a 
hard shutdown (swith off the computer when linux is running). 
Make sure that you turn off the box properly, shutting linux first. The 
message shouldn't appear.

Well, you have received many good advices from people who obviously know much 
more than me. 

As I said I just learned to use sudo and I certainly don't know all the 
functions and uses of that command. 
However you say that sudo only allows a non-root user to access a command 
for about 5 minutes.
The way I have set up some commands with sudo, the changes are permanent.
Usually adsl-start and adsl-stop must be run from root but I have set it up 
so that our home users can all do it. I wrote a bash script that includes 
sudo adsl-start and sudo adsl-stop and the commands still work the next day.

The final verdict? For the longest time, RedHat 6.0 was my favourite Linux 
distribution. It wasn't the first one I'd used, but it was the best. I've run 
innumerable other distributions since then, but none compared to good old 
RedHat 6.0. Mandrake 7.2, while great, still didn't quite measure up. 

 RedHat 6.0 has been replaced. I've been hammering Mandrake 8.0 for two weeks 
now and love it. I've had no problems other than the accompanying kernel 
source not compiling. That's it. 

 Mandrake 8.0 is as close to a flawless Linux distribution as you can get, 
and I would highly recommend to anyone. Mandrake 8.0, as far as I'm 
concerned, is now the benchmark against which other distributions will be 
measured. 

 It really is that good.

[newbie] find in subdirectories

a very simple question from a very newbie. 

How do I get the command find to search all the subdirectories.
I had a look at man find but to no avail.
I tried many different options including find -depth find -mindepth -maxdepth
but I still can't get find to find anything beyond the current directory.

This didn't help me either:

Compare what I get:

 working so far. Should I just uninstall and start over? I see the jre1.3.1
 in my /usr file with all of the other files that are supposed to be there.
 I am totally perplexed.

One thing you didn't mention is: did you uninstall your old version of Java 
as Sridhar suggested?
It would help if you could keep a log of everything you're doing so that we 
(well, they, the more advanced people) have a clue of what's going on. 

To make sure, did you:
1- uninstall the old java
2- make sure the new is properly installed.
  (question to my 'linux-elders': how would one make sure that something is 
properly installed? )
3- set   path according to one or the other method given (which one did you 
do?)
4- how is you konqueror browser set? (maybe an improper setting may conflict 
with the java path given. 
5- make sure also to keep all the details in your latest email. At most two 
or three people have been paying attention to this thread since the 
beginning. This way others may jump in and provide you with the key to 
solving your problem. 

 You all have offered great suggestions however for some reason nothing has
 worked. I know this can be resolved somehow. Again I have LM8 which was
 running the installed jre1.3.1 just fine for awhile then stopped working
 mysteriously.

Are you sure your system was running the jre1.3.1 version and not 1.0.6 Java 
Version 1.1 you mentionned before?

 Also, everytime I startup Konqueror I get an error message box that says
 KDE module error at the top and says cannot find nsplugin.desktop. Does
 anyone know what this means?

your Konqueror seems to be set to use netscape's plugins. Maybe it shouldn't 
(it doesn't on my box). Let it grab java directly where it is

Remember that I am a three weeks old linux user. I just happened to have 
installed java by myself last week.

well, for me the chat java applet that I used  (like in the chat rooms from 
the yahoogroup lists) open imbeded in the same konqueror window, like it used 
to do on my old box with netscape under windows.

i downloaded the j2re1.3.0 version for the following reason (as I said, I 
played it safe, not knowing what I was dealing with, and it works for me on 
konqueror):

which file did you download/install?
from where?
what is the version of your kernel?

I am sorry: I don't know of any glossary that could be useful to you.
I assume that you're speaking of technical/linux terminology (otherwise a 
good dictionnary would do!)


1- Have you tried to subscribe to a linux list in your own language? There 
certainly will be someone there who will be able to answer your questions and 
explain to you some of the English terms and even translate them into your 
own language. 

2-Otherwise, you could tell us, on this list, which technical/linux terms 
have you puzzled. I am a beginner myself, but I'm sure I could explain some 
simple terms. Others would be here too to provide some explanations. 

3- Do your homework, but don't hesitate to ask several times if your query is 
not replied to the first time (this is a busy list, and it's easy to overlook 
some messages). We are (almost all) beginners on this list, and we here both 
to learn and to help each other.

Nobody seems to have replied yet: maybe you should ask again but try to give 
more details... err I don't know... like the version of the kernel and of 
your distro, which java version did you install, what did you do that could 
have influenced  java... which browser do you use... Any message error 
appears?

Can someone else help me to ask Marcia the relevant questions that will help 
her to solve her problem?

Yes, I did install java recently and used Konqueror to have a chat. 
Have you java installed?
If yes, you just need to put java into your path, using root. 
(I found that putting the path in the konqueror settings did not work).

Hi Dr Devil!

First, you'd be better of making sure that your messages reach the list too. 
I'm very newbie too and struggling to keep up with the flood of mails.  
You have to click reply all and delete unnecessary addresses.

I didn't know anything about java until one evening I noticed that Java was 
not installed by default on linux. The next day I had an important scheduled 
chat with my teacher. That night, I read all the FAQ and web pages that I 
could find until I managed to set it  up.

Unfortunately I lost my bookmarks since (stupid manipulation mistake from 
me). 

A good starting point would be the following site:
http://www.blackdown.org/java-linux/

I think it includes a FAQ and an installation guide. 
I downloaded the prized version (j2re1.3.0), *not* the latest version of java 
and put the java folder in my path (as instructed on the faq). 

It now seem to work find with konqueror. 

Start there and let the list know if you have further questions.

 chat I first would get a message that the applet is opening then it did not
 open and I got an error message that says unable to load JSSE SSL stream
 handler, https support not available.

does this appear when using netscape? 
I don't use netscape, so I wouldn't know what to do. 

 Also, when I first open Konqueror I get a box with an error message that
 says cannot find ns plugin or something close to that.

I believe that setting up the path as above could solve the problem with 
Konqueror. give it a try. 

I am sorry: i didn't see you previous emails until right now. You were asking 
me whether to install the latest version or not. 
I certainly wouldn't know whether it is a good choice or not, but I know two 
things:
1- what worked for me
2- reading this forum, I noticed that the latest version  of everything is 
not necessarily the best for individual cases. 
Faced with the choice of version, I decided to play it safe and downloaded 
the version from http://www.blackdown.org/java-linux/ that got prized. 
j2re1.3.0 I believe. 
I downloaded the intel version even though I have an AMD Duron chip, but that 
worked fine with me.

 believe it originated from the (Australian) Gold Rush days when lonely

 boring a hole in them). Hence the Australian expression get a root.

 (figuring unused memory is wasted memory), so it often finds memory
 errors right away that windows would totally miss.

I just bought a new box and insisted on having 256Mb RAM (against the advice 
of a friend who said 128Mb would be enough). 
After installing LM8.0, I noticed that most of the 256Mb were used, 
confirming that I made the right choice, but I also wondered why Linux would 
precisely use the amount of RAM I had. 

I was thinking to wait that memory comes cheaper to add two 512Mb bars to 
have a total of 1300Mb RAM. Would that make the system  faster, or would that 
only be a waste of money? 
(running on a AMD Duron 750Mhz, that I may upgrade to K7 1.4Mhz sometime next 
year)
I only run typical desktop single user applications (mail, internet...).
