whenever any company releases a product that does something better, it gets
adopted by others because it is better.

when a company release something that sucks.. it doesn't usually get
adopted, (unless there are marketing reasons or blackmail behind it..)

Winblows knicked ideas from Mac, they knicked stuff from bsd.. they knicked
lots of stuff I think... why? because it
did the job easier and simplier then what they had at the time, (assuming
 they had something.)

linux then knicked stuff from M$,, like KDE's layout and format... why?
because it was easier to understand, and
the majority of people already understand it.

nobody is suggesting that linux should knick crap like BSOD's or fat32 or
adopt its usability in reiserfs or anything..
but there is nothing wrong with copying the functionality of useful
stuff..stuff that makes things more efficient (there is that word again.)

when ABS for cars came out, wow, what a reaction, but it was patented
worldwide, once it expired, it got installed into most new mid to high end
cars,, why? because it saved lives..(you can equate that to increased
efficiency if you like, I have always found that I work better when I'm
alive.) who cares who invented it?

Don't let hate for M$ blind you, the only area where M$ has superiority
over linux is its simplicity... even most linux diehards are not blind to
that... but things are getting closer.. why? because we can take the best
of their ideas, (or ideas that they have knicked) and leave the dross with
winblows.. and slowly linux is doing just that..

PS, you don't need an application to install windows apps, you find an
install.exe file, and you dbl click on it.. and then answer questions..
thats it... rpmdrake is good and a huge step up from compiling at a
console, but its still lagging behind just starting a setup.exe file...

for better or worse, I think that is one of the main reasons that even
experianced windows users don't like linux (and most of us started as
 experianced windows users.)

Nope, haven't seen any claims to that effect outside of the Cooker list--
Chances are if they're going to put a kernel on a distro it's stable and I

If you use Mandrake's kernel you won't have to do any compiling and when it's
installed properly it leaves your old kernel intact.

You can find the latest kernel in Mandrake Cooker. Download it and su to
root, then type:

rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.13-2mdk.rpm

or whatever version they're up to now. Remember, because it's from Cooker
there are no gurantees about how well it works, but if you install with the

As long as you are using dhcp you will not be able to host a website! The

[newbie] X Bloating...

2001-10-18 Per discussione Richie de Almeida

I have trouble running my work PC for more than 12 hours without a reboot.

Using system guard I can see that over time the memory for the X server just
grows and grows until all RAM and Swap space are gone followed by a total
lockup as the OS has no room to think.

Disabling Multiple Wallpapers for the desktop it buys me a few extra hours.

Leaving my PC logged in overnight to share my VMWare'd NT4 box guarantees a
crash before midnight.

Staying logged in without VMWare on means a crash sometime before I get to
work in the morning.

Logging out completely overnight means I'll have a crash sometime around noon
the following day.

Even as I write this email my X Server has doubled its memory usage.

I don't have this problem at home, both PCs are running LM8.1 final release
with Textstar object-prelinked KDE 2.2.1. The biggest difference between the
two is my home PC runs on an ATI Radeon and the work PC is using a Matrox
G450.

Who's got suggestions on how to track down what is bloating X?

I have the same controller and I have had that problem. You've got two hard
drives that have been marked down as the bootable drive and I'm not just
about where LILO is installed.

For example, I had a drive that had Windoze installed on it and when I
installed LM I installed it and LILO to a different hard drive. Diskdrake
assumes you know what you're doing and isn't going to go look for other hard
drives being marked as bootable and this is what leads to the conflict you
see.

To fix it, boot into rescue mode and run fdisk on the hard drive you don't
want to be booting from and turn off the bootable partition.

u sure that that will work

if i turn off the bootable flag from my first hd (win2k running) then i
wouldnt be able to boot it ???

The bootable flag just lets the BIOS know which hard drive to give control
to. It does not effect a partition's ability to boot an OS.

since i boot my os´s with nt loader - i installed lilo in the root
partition of the corresponding drive instead of the
 MBR.

The Win2000 NT Loader is very tenacious-- it's not going to give up control
just because you have LILO installed on another partition.

i think there has to be another solution - there were some postings on deja
that said that there would be a special driver for linux to make it work
with the promise controller - but up to now i wasnt able to find it

The driver was necessary for 2.2 kernels but the module for running the
Promise ATA100 controller is included with 2.4 kernels (including LM8.x).

Sure, the HTML stuff can be really inconvenient but in a day and age where

As for speed, well, I use a 56K modem at home and due to the condition of the
old telephone lines in my neighbourhood I average 3K /sec downloads on a
goodday and downloading hundreds of these newbie emails in a go still doesn't
take that long-- they arrive faster than I can read them all at any rate.

If this space was for more advanced users you might have a point about what
HTML posters are thinking but this is an area for Newbies and Newbies don't
necessarily have control or even awareness of what or where their settings
are and this forum is supposed to help with that.

Please realize that many Newbies will always be Newbies because they don't
want to learn about Linux or PCs, they just want to accomplish a few tasks.
And from what I've seen in this list over the past couple months, that's what
goes on here.

When I see people getting upset over HTML being posted (or top-posting-- who
remembers that thread?) in this list it seems to me that they're asking for a
Newbie list without Newbies.

The point I'm trying to make is that freaking out or building up anger over
the way an email gets posted can't lead to anything good. Hostile words
aside, what if a Newbie gets discouraged and returns to using their familiar
Windows products-- nobody wins!

Your font server, xfs is not running. One reason for xfs not starting may be
that you have deleted or moved the folders where all the fonts are stored.
To verify that you still have fonts to load, open this file at the shell
command prompt:

vi /etc/X11/fs/config

You ought to see some typing about halfway down that looks like this:

catalogue = /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mdk:unscaled,
/usr/share/fonts/default/Type1

...Those are all the folders that contain fonts. If none or some of these
folders are missing or empty you must re-install your fonts.

If you have more questions you can reply straight to me.

Is there any way of getting rid of Grub, so that the
 machine boots straight into Windows?

Boot with a Windows floppy disk, the System boot disk that you can create
from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel is a good one to use. At the
command prompt type:

SYS C:

You must have a file on your bootdisk called SYS.COM in order for this to
work.

Share your DVD drive on your NT box as per usual then use Samba from your

The reason for my not wanting to include boot loaders during the Linux

I made a mistake near the end of a Linux installation and couldn't
correct it. So, I halted the installation to try to restart it.

GRUB had already been installed and it wouldn't let me to do a

Using boot floppies is as reliable as wearing a belt and suspenders but

Not all fonts are created equal! Some are bitmap-based and I don't think

If you're running KDE, you can get a little extra help by running the Control

Hiya,

It looks like there's some fooferah in that lilo config... that 'map-drive'
stuff are physical designations of your hard drives, 0x80 is your hda and
0x81 is your hdb or something like that...

Anyways, going from when I used to have a dual boot with Windows, just the
first three lines are necessary, like this:

other=dev/hda1
   label=windows98
   tabel=/dev/hda

Your default is set somewhere close to the top of lilo.conf, just change it
to:
default=windows98

While you're there, you can change the wait time as well, it think it goes
in 10-ths of a second

timeout=100

will give you ten seconds instead of the default five Mandrake sets in the
install.

Don't forget to recompile lilo after you've edited the file. As root, enter
/sbin/lilo at a command prompt.

I tried to make Windows98 the default because a few kids also use this

/etc/lilo.conf shows the Windows98 setup thusly:

   label=windows98
   tabel=/dev/hda
   map-drive=0X80
  to=0X81
   map-drive=0X81
  to=0X80

This seems to be quite different from the MDK8.0
 setup in /etc/lilo.conf

What should the Windows98 entry in /etc/lili.conf
 look like?

And, what does it take to make Windows98 the default boot?
Is it just a matter of putting MDK and Windows in reverse

[newbie] Damn Radeon

2001-08-13 Per discussione Richie de Almeida

Remember when having Radeon in your basement was a bad thing?

But more to the point, has anyone out there had any success using an ATI
Radeon AGP card with Xwindows 4.1.0?

X starts up and runs, it even starts KDE but there is absolutely no video
signal (I know KDE starts because that pompous little symphony starts up-- I
gotta switch that off someday...). Without the video signal the monitor just
switches into power-saving mode. If it was a bad refresh setting, the
monitor would go wonky or give me a warning, or so I figure.

Since there's multi-outputs on this card (SVGA, LCD and CATV) I'm wondering
if the radeon driver needs to know which output to use-- any suggestions out
there?

Linux has had IPv6 support for quite some time, and I beleive that
Win2K has it as well (because they stole the TCP/IP stack from
  FreeBSD).

They did NOT steal it. The license ALLOWED them to use it. It was
perfectly legal, if a bit hypocritical.

Hold the boat! IPv6 was developed in consortium about 3 years ago, that
means its there for everybody. Saying M$ stole it from anywhere is like saying they
stole
email as they happen to use POP and SMTP in Outlook...

 X - A - W - K

Mandrake is very accessible, and after installing both LM 8 and RH7.1, I
think Mandrake goes that extra step to get the creature-comforts in like
working sound, video and printing straight out of the box. Redhat doesn't
even confirm sound or printer settings during its install, they do work, but
you have to configure them after the installation.

LM8 is also the only distribution I've that can run my Radeon at all. Even
though RedHat 7.1 identified my card, it still couldn't run it on X, I think
it has something to do with FBDev not being install, but I'm not sure yet...

LM's Software Manager is reliable and way faster than the defacto GNOrpm but
RedHat's Up2Date utility is superb for accessing the latest updates and
libraries.

LM seems to favour KDE, RedHat favours GNOME.

Mandrake appears to have more in-house tools like Software Manager, Mandrake
Control Center, DiskDrake, HardDrake, etc.

Overall, both are good, but I feel that I spend much less time configuring
Mandrake, so I can do the things I really want to do like listening to music
and writing really long emails on mailing lists

Re: [newbie] Resolver problem.

2001-08-07 Per discussione Richie de Almeida

The DOS version of fdisk /mbr won't kill NT-Loader, SYS C: would however. I
learned this after alot of banging my head on the keyboard after trying to
restore my laptop to Win95 some years ago!

If you ever need to restore Bill's boot menu, just start a winnt install and
choose to Repair an Installation, just stop the install before it actually
starts copying files otherwise you'll mess up your existing WINNT install!

After you have restored Bill's bootloader you can restore LILO by booting up
Linux with your bootdisk (you *did* make a bootdisk, didn't you?) and run
LILO. Make sure you've added your WINNT and DOS partitions to /etc/lilo.conf
before you run /sbin/lilo... You should also check with Linux's fdisk that
the active partition is set to whichever partition LILO gets installed to.

There's some excellent HOWTOs in the Linux Documentation Project for doing a
multi-boot the NT and Linux, read them before you go any further!

 Hi,

Because of the resolver problem and other problems, I have decided to
try version 7.2 instead of 8.0.

I have D*S and W*ndo*s NT4.0 installed on the machine. I need to keep
those UNFORTUNATELY :( I am going to take the following two steps to
 uninstall
mdk 8.0 and install mdk 7.2 instead:

 1) Use NT to delete all the linux partitions.
 2) Use mdk 7.2 install to create the required linux partitions and
 install mdk 7.2

There is an issue with LILO, however. Currently, with 8.0 installed,
LILO lets me boot DOS instead of linux and from there I get B*ll Gates
boot menu from which I chose NT or DOS boot. Now when I take step (1)
above and without doing fdisk /mbr LILO stays there and it still works
for booting the D*S and W*ndo*s. I am hesitant to try fdisk /mbr
because doing that will allow me to boot D*S and I am not sure I will
get the b*ll Gates menu selection that allows me to boot NT instead of
 D*S.

DO I have to do fdisk /mbr before installing 7.2? What would be the
repercussions if I did not? If I do have to do fdisk /mbr, how will I
be able to boot D*S or NT without LILO?

 Thanx,

unix/:-1 is how Xserver connects to xfs, the X font-server.

Going by the message you got, when xfs tried to upload its fonts to your
X-server, some files or folders containing fonts were missing. Running
Xconfigurator may have updated the configuration file for xfs (the file is
/etc/X11/fs/config) to not include the missing path, OR, Xconfigurator
dropped the command to download fonts from xfs. Look in /etc/X11/XF86Config
in the FontPath section, if xfs is being used for serving fonts you'll see
a line that looks like:

Load unix/:-1

You really do want this line in your XF86Config as xfs lets you use scalable
fonts and TrueType fonts, which is a big plus as the standard X fonts look
awful in higher resolutions.

Try typing in Xconfigurator and running that.

Re: [newbie] Problems upgrading RPM

2001-08-07 Per discussione Richie de Almeida

Your problem may have been from dinking around with RedHat software instead
of Mandrake software. Personally, I don't trust installing RPMs on Mandrake
unless they're from Mandrake, with a few exceptions. I don't know about
backing out from these abortive RPM installs, you may want to make a fresh
install of Mandrake.

When you get a working install back, try downloading the Linux Kernel source
in .tar.gz format from Linux.org or some other place and compiling it
yourself. There's great HOWTOs on compiling the kernel just about everywhere
and it's not as hard as it seems, it's just takes a little extra time to
actually compile the kernel (my first compile was on a Pentium 90-- it took
about two hours! Any Pentium II should take considerably less time)

The best part is once you get used to it you can really customize the kernel
to suit your needs, it's a great way to squeeze all the performance you can
out of your PC!

downloaded the package db3-3.1.17-4.5x.i386.rpm and installed it.

Then I installed the rpm-4.0.2 and I got a message about a directoy
/rpm/libs (but I am not sure about the name) that could not be erased
 because it was not empty.

The bad new is that after that, kdepackage did not work, I tryed to rebuild

Could anyone give me some advice about what to do?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Re: [newbie] anything new about SO ugly fonts ?

If it's wordprocessing without ugly fonts that you're after, try AbiWord 0.9.

They have instructions for replacing their own ugly fonts with TT fonts and
they look MUCH better.

I'm on LM 8 and the *official* MS True Type fonts work well like Times New
Roman, Arial, Tahoma, etc. Other non-MS fonts that I downloaded from freebie
font websites didn't work (with AbiWord).

Be sure you have your lilo boot floppy before you do
anything. Then install Win2k. You can then use your
lilo boot floppy to boot to

  linux

and then run lilo again which will install the loader.

 Robertas root type:

... Don't forget to add an entry for your Win2000 partition in /etc/lilo.conf
before running lilo! You can't break anything for not adding it, but you
won't be able to boot W2k until you do. For non-Linux installs, it's as
simple as configuring a menu name and stating which partition to boot. Lilo
really works so if you don't get it on the first try, just lilo -u to
uninstall then try again. The Lilo HOWTOs are superb, give them a look at

Re: [newbie] Mandrake and pci/ide adapter cards

2001-08-06 Per discussione Richie de Alemida

I have the Maxtor PCI/IDE card and it works fine with LM8.0. Most
distributions based on 2.4 will have the extra modules to see the additional
IDE channels and, at no extra cost to you, use the full ATA-100 spec
(additional cables not included...).

I started with my PCI/IDE card in my machine right from install, I reckon
you'll have to dink around with fstab (/etc/fstab?) to have the drive
available all the time if you're already running LM8. I can tell you that LM
recognizes mine as regular IDE drives and not SCSIs (Windows and some BIOSes
like to treat drives attached to the PCI/IDE like as SCSI...).

And more importantly, would it be a big hassle to configure Mandrake to use
that drive to hold webpages and user accounts, as opposed to the smaller
 boot SCSI?

 Them SCSI drives are eeexpensive!

does anyone know if it can be done with fetchmail? or if not, is there an
