True for SCSI drives but not for IDE as far as I've seen. I've

Orinoco did make a CardBus version that wasn't, AFAIK, Mac
compatible. CardBus cards have a metal finger contact strip around
the connector. If it's just plain metal all the way from the
connector end to the antenna housing then it's not CardBus. Did you
try the other card slot? Have you tried the Airport drivers, at
least in the WallStreet, I think you have to manually install the

3400c for sure. Other way around can be a problem as the 3400 can
take a thicker drive. I don't know about the 1400c. The 5300 (which
is older) has different mounting hole patterns. You can still do it
in a 5300, you just need to drill new holes. So it depends on
whether the 1400s hole pattern is new or old. Worse case is you'd
need to drill new holes.

To sign up for the new list, go to

There are some things about Google Groups that are a bit different, so
be sure to read the updated list FAQ, which explains the subscription

Is there a way to search for Low End Mac lists? When I try it in the

To the 1400 lister; do you have a TCP/IP Control panel?

I don't think I've seen this mentioned. MacTCP is infamous for it's
problems with BootP. IIRC it doesn't use DHCP.

MacTCP is the predecessor of TCP/IP in what IIRC is known as Classic

Wireless router that handles AppleTalk

2006-01-12 Thread Clark Martin
No, I'm not looking, I found one, by accident. I was trying to
answer a question on Usenet about looking up AppleTalk info today.
As I was playing around with the CLI AppleTalk commands (atlookup,
atstatus and others) I realized I was seeing AppleTalk nodes besides
my laptop and I have no wired connection at the moment. I pulled up
both Interpol and Timbuktu and they both showed AppleTalk stuff too.
And Timbuktu actually worked.

My wireless router is a Motorola WR850G model. It's fairly current.
So if you are looking for something that will do AppleTalk check it
out. I was rather particular when I went looking for this router, it
has quite a few features that are rare, including support for other
routers (IPNetRouter providing a MacIP connection). It is a good
router and today it turns out it's even better. It's an 802.11g
router and connectivity is quite good.

I bought it at a Target store for around $60.

Best guess is that something is loose or getting crimped when you

Can you activate the screen closed switch manually somehow? If you

simply have been the battery burning off?

It's really hard to say what the original fault was without being
able to examine all the hardware. Try scraping out all the carbon
and then scrape out some plastic too, just to make sure you get
everything. After cleaning away any residue then try measuring the
contacts with with an ohmmeter, with no power connected to the
laptop. Measure it then reverse the leads and measure it again. The
higher value should be well above 100 ohms although that is largely
guess work on my part. Then try it and see.

Only very badly designed capacitors will whine, if then. Generall
whining is from inductors. Burning components typically produce more
of a hissing sound than a whine. Although the whine could be
symptomatic of an overload.

with carbon left between the contacts. This carbon behaves just like
a resistor of fairly low resistance (most resistors are made up of
carbon). When you apply power now that resistor heats up and
possibly cooks itself some more, lowering the resistance further and
thus increasing the heat. So even though the original fault may be
one it will now generate heat on it's own.

The best solution is to replace the part that has carbonized. Barring
that, break the carbon path and repair the gap with non-conducting
material.

It's not the HD at all, I am 100% sure. The HD is already sound
asleep when I hear the little click sound. Actually, it's not
really a *click*, it's more like of an electrical noise, if you can
picture that.

I am 100% sure it's the sleep light, because I only hear the noise
the split second the light is lit.

The light is an LED and the when they make a sound, they only do it
once (when they blow up - personal experience).

The problem I have around here is that no one seems to know the names of

turning it on and using it. When you think about it, that's probably

PowerBook logo in center of front bezel = Pismo, bronze keyboard,

I prefer to base my ID on the ports. There is a logical order to
them so I don't have to remember arbitrary design factors.

Wallstreet Serial / SCSI
Lombard USB / SCSI
Pismo USB / Firewire

Of course one must know what the ports look like to use this method.

I thought these did require a driver as they don't use LocalTalk but

Hello,
Did the patch have the information about requiring a minimum version
of Quicktime? If my memory serves me, you are required to have a
certain version of quicktime for itunes to work in 8.6.

David

I'm going from memory here but I think this patch program had to be
applied to the iTunes installer and also to the iTunes application
once installed. The patch is applied to the installer to get it to
install the software under 8.x and to the application to make it
actually work under 8.6.

Then again I could be completely wrong and it was some other program
but I'm pretty sure it was iTunes.

Wireless connection via my Dell TrueMobile 1150 also works great on
an UNENCRYPTED network using ORiNOCO v. 7.2 driver software.
However, when I turn on 128-bit encryption on the Linksis wireless
router, and enter the 26 digit WEP key, I can't connect (although it
registers great signal strength). It is my understanding that the
TrueMobile 1150 (a Lucent/Agere card) is a GOLD card that is
supposed to support 128-bit encryption. Any ideas as to my
problem/solution?

What are you using as a Key. Specifically is it text or Hex (numbers
0-9 and letters a-f or A-F). If it's text then you are likely
running afoul of the different way different hardware / software
turns a text key into a hex key. Down in side the router and
wireless card use a binary key. This can readily be displayed as a
Hex key and all equipment works with this without trouble. Most
wireless encryption systems have a method for inputting a text key
and converting it to a hex key. This makes it easier to write it
down or remember it. Problem is the text to hex conversion process
gets done differently.

What you need to do is look at your router setup and get the hex key.
Then enter this into your laptop. I don't know about the Orinoco
software specifically but most have a method for signifying that you
are entering a hex key (since a hex key could also be interpreted as
a text key). With Apple's stuff you prefix the hex key with a "$"
(dollar sign).

If you are still having problems I recommend turning off the WEP on
the router to verify you can connect. Then try turning on WEP to get
it working.

No, that's not it, AT and TCP/IP are entirely independent.

I suspect that it's design flaw in the driver software. Something

unless AT is activated for the card. Basically it's making the

Whilst the Powerbook see's the drive and can use it for data use as soon as
I put a music CD in and run either the supplied software or Apples CD player

Whilst I am not likely to use this machine that often for this use it would
be interesting to find out why this is happening.

I have tried turning of the La'Cie extensions but that made no difference.
Any suggestions ?

related to my connection speed as when I download a file it just flies!
I have tried appropriate versions of Netscape, Internet Explorer and Icab
but it still crawls! I obviously dont expect this Powerbook to run as fast
as a modern Computer but a little more speed would be nice.
Has anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks
Martin Mackett

I think you are correct.

Its not exactly like that. There is 7.6 and 7.6.1 for the 3400.
But it is right, it is a silgtly different 7.6.

In the download area for alder amcs at apple.com you can
download the spezial files for the 3400.

It took me a year to get a german 7.6.1 for mine ;)

Looks like there might be some help for me out there :-)

Hi Manfred,

that's exactly what I found out as well: e.g. that *there is* a special
7.6

install CD just made for the 3400. - I even had a somebody sell it to me
(the guy said he was sure that the CD was originally from his 3400!!!) but
heck it still doesn't work :-/

I will try the things you wrote down on your website...maybe it will
help

Yes, you can with version 6 of the Orinoco driver, but you will have a
much

better PowerBook if you can upgrade to at least OS 8.6 and then use the
v7.2 drivers.

If you are short or ram, then i can understand your desire not to upgrade.

How much ram do you have? What are the specs for your PB1400.

Internet connection on a power book 1400 running os 7.5.3.
I have read that you can on os 7.6 but I would like to attempt it

I would appreciate any relevant info especially setting up IP addresses
and configuring TCP/IP.
I have purchased a wireless card that is compatible (Orinoco) and found

The problem is that it won't even precharge the batteries. Smart probe
won't recognize them.

I've had a couple of batteries which weren't seen because of broken
plastic across the connectors of the battery, so you mcould check this.

This isn't the problem either.

I got two PB540s and 4 batteries a coupe of years ago. The batteries
were all dead and none of the battery utilities I tried would help.
I set up a little gadget to charge the batteries from a bench supply.
I brought a couple of them up to around 12V and stuck them in the
laptop. It did it's thing and the batteries do show up. The other
two never did show up in the computer. The two "good" batteries are
good for maybe 10 minutes. I think of them as UPS power. The two
dead batteries I use for ballast.

So my points are you can try charging them externally if you got the
right gear and that if you do it may not help much.

Most of the Apple laptop batteries I've tried this on have a "+" and
"-" on the terminals that connect to the battery.

Yes

Is it reasonably possible that it 'might' be able to

You could upgrade it with a 5300's logic board. AFAIK you can't
upgrade the CPU separately.

This is usually done on machines that are maxed out on their limited

Pretty much all computers have ROM, it supplies the code the computer
uses to boot up. Traditionally on the Mac the ROM also had a portion
of the OS in it. This was done initially to supplement the RAM. The
original Mac, the 128K, had 128K RAM and 64K ROM so it was really as
if it had 192K of memory. Starting somewhere in the iMac line this
ROM became flash memory (firmware) so it could be updated with a
software installer.

You can think of Apple ROM as PC BIOS. BIOS has minimal drivers,
basically enough to put stuff on the screen and boot from disk.

One mouse button? Things with more buttons are called keyboards.

Should of bought an Apple years ago...

Naturally.

ports to plug ethernet connections directly to them--while it would
defeat the purpose of going wireless, would a direct connection to
such a router pass an AppleTalk packet?

Yes, the LAN side of most routers is simply a switch which cares
naught about the protocol used.

I've read all the internet instructions I can find, but the only possible

Am I missing a step? Any suggestions will be appreciated.
I've got a lucent wavelan wireless card and am using a belkin wireless

These days about the only wireless router that passes AppleTalk is
the Apple Airport line.

My Belkin doesn't pass AppleTalk. You can use IP to connect to the
other computers and the LW8500.

The biggest problem with rebuilding a LiON is cell availability.
The are rarely available as individual cells and finding the right
form factor cells is going to be harder still.

You would only want to rebuild a LiON battery pack with LiON cells.
There is a part inside the battery packs which tells the computer

rebuild a NiMH pack with LiON cells the pack would still be

???

The Nimh cells I have charge at a slower/lower rate than the Lion
cells I have For various things around the house.
Sellers of the Lion cells say they will charge in any charger but
sell special ones for high charge rates that recarge very fast.

I have no idea what form factor fits inside the 5300 battery pack
But recently looked for 4/3 A batteries for my7 1400 and Li-on
batteries that size are available.

But as you say the electronics may( or may not? ) present a problem
in switching over.

Current limits, float / cutoff voltages and in some cases temperature
limits are all likely different between the two. Lithium are likely
to have a higher maximum charge current. Thus if you use a NiMH
charger it will take longer. The float / cutoff voltage is likely
different between the two. I don't know what they are. But they are
almost certainly different. If the charger voltage is lower than the
battery it won't charge fully. If it's higher it will likely damage
the battery.

The thing I've found with all rechargeable batteries is that the
better the charger the longer they last and the more operating time
you get from them. Which means that using a charger meant for a
different type of battery is nothing but trouble.

Any electrical engineers out there with suggestions?

Go to the Apple Web site, in the older download area there is an

will let you access ASIP (Appleshare IP).

Rumor has it that some TV show or movie rigged a Mac to illuminate

33uF caps are electrolytics. I would suspect they are higher than

They are polarized. Electrolytics are inherently polarized although
they can be built non-polarized. Those are rare and wouldn't be in a
PowerBook. They shouldn't be hard to find. Even Rat Shack (cough,

don't want to use a lower capacitance rating and I wouldn't recommend
a higher rating either. In many cases a higher rated parted will
work but in some it won't.

but I remember this being dead simple back in the classic MacOS days
- just plug in ethernet, make sure TCP/IP is getting a dynamic
address, and you were set. (Ironically, setting up a modem was more
work, but since I did it more often I could probably get that done
quicker.)

The problem is that TCP/IP only gives me the option to use MacIP,
whatever that is. (Some kind of AppleTalk networking?) I
reinstalled the networking bits since the Duo's been lying around
and I couldn't remember how it was configured. PPP briefly appeared
as an option, and I set the netmask, et al. But as soon as I tried
to save that configuration I got an error, and the PPP option
disappeared again.

What can I check? I've never really used notebooks that much, but I
do know they have some special control panels that I might not be
familiar with. I need to have this info soon because I only have
two more nights to work on this before I give the machine away!
It's still a nice little machine, and I'd like to get it in useful
condition.

Thanks,

No, you can't skip it. The software that lets a machine access

I've been reading too much e-mail. Most of my mailing list mail is
either about Macs or Railroads. I looked at this message and it
seemed like they had completely crossed. ACFX is a railroad
reporting mark for American Car and Foundry Leasing (X for Leasing).
So ACFX44501 sounds like a railroad car. That and the previous
messages I just read were from a railroad group including a message
from a Roger.

Anyway
One day while waiting for some railfan friends I went into a Burger
King and noticed they had free wireless access. So I grabbed the
laptop and checked it out. You start by going to any web page. A
web page comes up for Internet access. You had to create a user ID
and password. It's then supposed to send you an e-mail to confirm.
They do this to limit abuse. First problem, the web page never went
past this point. Second problem, you can't check your e-mail to
confirm your access until you connect elsewhere so it's kind of hard
to use the first time. So I went on line with my cell phone and there
is the confirmation e-mail. So I used that and was able to get
"access". Problem three, I could only access the website for this
service. Overall I was not impressed.

I have heard of similar services though that do use some sort of
login using a web page like the above.

I've also used wireless access at a couple of doctor's offices lately
and in that case it was simply a matter of joining that network.

one that includes a Mac driver? (I did discover a Mac

From what I heard there is only one 3COM card that has a Mac driver
so I think you are SOL.

Yes, you need a Mac Driver for any Ethernet interface. Apple
Interfaces all have drivers included in the OS. A few network cards
work with Apple drivers, principally LC PDS cards. I doubt there are
any third party PC Card interfaces that work with Apple drivers.

Same thing for a PCMCIA card for wireless internet
access, I need to find a brand/model with a Mac
driver, correct?
Orinoco PC Card (not CardBUS) Gold or Silver work with Airport
software. You do have to use TomeViewer to install the software.
The installer won't install it on a 3400c.

USB card, I also need that the card comes with Mac
drivers (or can download) Is this correct?
Most USB PC Cards do work with the Apple drivers. Note that OS 9.X
won't install the drivers unless it sees the card there during
installation. You can install the driver later. Or use the stand
alone installer for 8.6 or 9.x

One additional item, my indicator for the "Battery
Life Remaining" isn't showing up. Is that an
extension? What is the name of it?
I believe it's an option in the Energy Saver control panel. There is
also a display in the Control Strip.

One other clue, and, being a newbie on OSX I didn't know to check
it, is in the Network Preference panel, in "Show -> Network Status"
It tells me that the cable for Built-in Ethernet is not plugged
in". I suppose that, seeing that it IS plugged in, means that it
is not receiving a signal from the 5300 for some reason. Now, I
did check the crossover cable between the Pismo and a TiBook and it
functioned normally.
Are you 100% positive that it's a crossover cable? Some TiBooks do
have autosensing ethernet ports, so it would work between the Pismo
and the TiBook, but not with the 5300.

It's an added expense, but a hub or switch connecting the two will
probably help. Older Macs wouldn't recognize the ethernet port
unless it was connected to a 'live' port; voltage a crossover cable
does not provide, but that a hub or switch does.

If it isn't a non-crossover cable, I'll wager that's the issue.
The voltage is the same. Auto-MDIX sensing can cause problems with
other ports during the negotiation stage, much like 10/100 auto
sensing does with older hardware. I agree, a switch (I'd only bother
with a hub if it was free) simplifies things. For starters it will
show a link light for each device so you can immediately tell which
if any is the problem. It also avoids the problem with older OSs
defaulting to LocalTalk if the Ethernet isn't properly connected at
startup or if it goes away while connected.

The Kanga will take PCMCIA (AKA PC Card) cards already. It can be

Wallstreet is the minimum for a DVD-ROM (well you might connect a

I haven't heard of a built in CD-R for anything before a Wallstreet either.
The Kanga will definitely be the faster machine and it can take the

I don't know of any firmware update that prevents installation of an older
OS.
You probably couldn't install OS 8.6 on top of OS 9 because the
installers don't work that way. You can do a clean install which
renames and damns (unblesses) that system folder then creates a new
one for 8.6.

There are numerous versions of 12" iBooks, some do run 9 and some
don't. Is it a G4 and do you know how fast the processor is? Of
hand I don't know where the cutoff is but those two factors will
determine it.

Hi I think that what might of happened is someone has just made a disc
copy of a working system they had and transferred it to the 3400 either
via cd or appletalk serial , and the system they made it from never had
ethernet, possibly a 1400 or 5300. disc image.
that could explain the lack of ethernet in the system profiler
i would suggest a complete erase and install of the system.
also if that does not work i have a complete 3400 in parts minus the
128mb ram card i sold that you could use to test the various bits.

I made a similar fix to a PB 180. The lower case housing has sunken

the washer, through the lower housing and into the threaded insert in
the upper housing. It is thin enough to clear a desktop because of

No.

The reason for the question is my 3400c with 64 add-on ram doesn't
seem much slower than the one with 128 add-on. My dark side
notebook with only 64 megs just flies, but that ram is on the
motherboard.
Motherboard RAM on any newer Mac looks to the memory controller just
like plug-in memory.

Not necessarily. the equation is not as simple as 'More Ram = More
Speed'. All this means is that your typical operations aren't
constrained by RAM. Disk I/O and CPU speed play important roles too,
and the bus speed constrains them all.
More RAM will pretty much always help but it's depending on the
software to make efficient use of it. With OS X this is automatic.
But with OS 9 which the 3400 is limited to you have to adjust the
memory allocation to each program to take advantage of the additional
memory.

As for your darkside notebook, well now you're comparing Apples to
fish. What OS? What CPU? What bus speed?

Lastly, is there a pb with a good amount of standard ram on the
motherboard? That model, whatever it is, would seem to be the best
choice for an upgrade. Thanks!
No, it's actually a poor candidate for upgrades, because when Apple
moved past the 3400, all Powerbooks had NO ram on their
motherboards, in favor of two upgradeable slots.
Except for the G3 PowerBook which has 32Mb on the motherboard. Yes,
I know the G3 is based on the 3400 but it is definitely past the 3400.

Only iBooks have ram soldered in and it's a major impediment to
their upgrades, as higher density ram became available. As a for
instance: my wife's tangerine iBook has 32 mb soldered on the MB,
and only one slot, max 512 MB. Had Apple opted for two slots instead
on soldering in 32 MB, the max on the system would be 1Gb instead of
the 544 it is now.

only one type of ethernet cable when I started this - the phone cord
looking one. I tried to use that cord and simply run it from the iMac

The iMac has auto-midx or whatever it's called, so a crossover cable
for a direct connection isn't required.
Only the latest iMacs have auto-MDI-X. Certainly the G5s, I don't
know about the G4s

What OS are you running? I have a PPC 540c that I can connect to my
other computers running OSX, but they can't connect to the 'book.
OSX can use Appletalk, but with the right stuff you can share over
IP which seems to be Apple's current direction/focus.
For the iMac (assuming OSX), I've found it easiest to set up a new
user with the same name as the computer connecting to it, e.g. in my
case that would be username PPC540. Go to the sharing Preference
pane and turn on file sharing.
OSX can most certainly use AppleTalk. You can only enable it on one
interface so make sure that it is active on the interface in question.

I would not set up the machine name and user name the same. That
just becomes a source of confusion.

Re: better browser for OS9.2.2

2005-02-18 Thread martin
Many thanks to those who offered their insight on my browser issue,
all good advice!

The consensus seems to be that Mozilla is slow, though improves on
the old Netscrape.
I'll sniff out all suggestions/links (forgot all about iCab! oops)
and let you know how it turns out.

Your suggestion that I upgrade to OSX is well taken, Bruce.
However, I've been upgrading hardware, Operating Systems, and
software constantly since 1987. Working in the graphics/design field,
I use the following apps almost every day:

Photoshop, InDesign, Freehand (and Illustrator), Pagemaker (and Quark
Xpress), Vectorworks, ClarisCAD (still rocks!), UpFront,
DesignWorkshop, Acrobat and many more, all in OS9.2.2. Some of these
aren't even available for OSX, some run only in Classic Mode (sorta
like running Windows 3.1 over DOS I reckon), and a few of the apps I
rely on are now orphaned/abandoned, yet I'd be lost without them.

When OSX came along shortly after I invested in my G4, I dug in my
heels: this new OS would require me to upgrade virtually everything,
if I wanted to take advantage of it, which would cost me literally
thousands of dollars. I've poured money into Apple for long enough,
and decided I'd try to get some of it back out of my system! I
figure I can nurse this heap along for another few years, before it
becomes embarrassing, running OS9 and versions no more recent than
2003.

In a few years, who knows what will have emerged? Hopefully, my
design skills still intact, I can look into a whole new
system/software, if I'm so inclined. Maybe I'll get lucky, and my job
will involve hand-sanding boats on the beach in Portugal (skills
which transfer readily to applying tanning cream to wholesome
feminine sunbathers, should the need arise). I may have to cave in,
and adapt to a new OS one more time : ) I hear many good things
about OSX; I wonder if an old dog like me can tailor it to look and
feel like the classic GUI ...?

I must go and rent Buckaroo Banzai again, it's been too long . . .
m

I'm not sure Netscape is still evolving. Has it improved in the
last few years?
Mozilla seems to be a work in progress.
Mozilla/Netscape (they're the same code base) has been a good stable
browser since about version 0.8 (which was Netscape 6.2)
It's vastly improved over the old 4.x versions of Netscape.
The last version running on OS 9, Mozilla 1.2 (iirc) was quite
stable for me, so long as I fed it enough memory. IIRC I gave it
like 48 megs.
There's a build of Mozilla 1.3.1 called Wamcom that is also nice,
though it's oddly slow in places; but it's based on a later version
of Mozilla that offers a lot of goodies.
Why not upgrade to OS X? Firefox and Safari are VERY good on it.--

Re: better browser for OS9.2.2

2005-02-18 Thread martin
Hi list creatures,
I tried tonight to make a reservation on BC Ferries (up here in
Victoria BC Canada), and their website shunted me to a page which
tersely informed me that Internet Explorer for Mac won't work on
their site, due to a known bug etc.

I recall that Microsoft stopped work on IE for Macs in 2003, because
Apple was pushing Safari ( and wouldn't share MacOS code ); they also
stopped developing IE as a standalone program for Windows, instead
planning to integrate it into their OS ( again! ). . .

BC ferries' page suggested I use Safari, Mozilla, or Netscape instead.
Now, I've been happy with IE, find it much smoother than Netscape
(which I used for years), or at least compatible with more sites.
I've accumulated hundreds of bookmarks (ie Favorites), and umm, I'm
USED to it. I can run earlier versions on my earlier Powerbooks (when
I have time to spare), which saves me learning a new protocol/set of
commands.

If I were to adopt a new browser, which one would be an intelligent
choice? Keeping in mind that I plan to run my Powerbook into the
ground, running OS9.2.2. My older 'books run System 7.1, so I assume
their Internet lifespan is severely limited.

Safari requires OSX, as far as I know.
I'm not sure Netscape is still evolving. Has it improved in the last
few years?
Mozilla seems to be a work in progress.

I'm open to all suggestions, and just want something reliable and
easy to use, like I have now.
Input from list members who've been down this path, would be valuable
and appreciated.
Particularly if the information is current :)

Many thanks.

Re: Rebuilding PB170 batteries

I posted detailed instructions for 100-series Powerbook battery
rebuilding on several occasions. These I'm told, are archived on The
Pickles site, and Grijan's FTP server as well. I found a clip from
these posts at <
mail-archive.com/powerbooks@mail.maclaunch.com/msg09926.html >

If you have time, you could troll the archives for the original posts
(from 2001 - 2003). Meanwhile I'll go see if I can find the complete
set ( packaged in .sit format ), which I think I have archived.

If there is interest in this subject ( the same techniques apply to
any rechargeable battery packs ), I'll be happy to re-post this guide
wherever anyone is generous enough to host it. Anyone with a
website/FTP/server who can post this small file?

Hi,
Does anyone know of a web-site or archive that has information on
re-building the battery pack for a PowerBook 170? I understand that they
are standard-sized NiCad's inside, and I'd like to give it a try.

parallels aircraft vintage (more or less). Thus my first Mac is
named Sopwith and that IIsi is Mustang. My old 7500 desktop is Eagle
and this iBook is Raptor. My file server started out as a IIsi
called Liberator and has moved up through a IIci, Centris 650, WGS
80, PM7500 and is now a 8550. The name has stayed Liberator as I
wanted to avoid confusion among the family. The two clones I have
have the names of British planes and certain OTHER computers I have
are named after German or Soviet planes, depending on vintage.

I name the harddisks with the computer name followed by " HD". I do
this to avoid having two or more server volumes on the desktop all
named "Macintosh HD". Machines running OS X that require the 8Gb
first partition have HD partitions called "Machine Name Boot" and
Machine Name HD".

Good question to ask, it's not the right thing. The 520c uses Apple
AUI (AAUI). It is very much like the AUI you have a link to but it
uses a different (smaller) connector to the computer. So look for an
AAUI transceiver. I've bought then for as low as $10 and seen them

The 5300 has a proprietary video connector that requires an adapter

Why can't you use it in disk mode, do you not have the cable or is it

Holding down the option key lists each disk that can boot but only

Is there a way to get the ibook to boot back to os9?

Only if you have access to an OS X Server that is set up to do it.
If you have another Mac with Firewire you could use a Firewire cable
and target disk mode on one of the machines to boot it. Connect the
machines (both shutdown) with a firewire cable. Put the panther disk
in the optical drive of the other machine, turn it on and hold down
the "T" key. This puts it in Target Disk mode, making it's drives
appear as firewire drives. Now start the iBook and hold down the
option key. This will bring up a selection of drives to boot from.
The Panther disk from the other machine should appear, click on it
and then click on the Right Arrow on screen.

It could be either. The simplest way to tell is try swapping the

I took the backup Powerbook, switched the hard drive from the other

Dear Ben, I joined a week ago, and yes, this is the right place, and very

First: In theory, you can do a lot with the Duo, but in practice, it can
take a lot of work to get things going.
convert the 'PS2' style network plug into 10baseT?
The socket looking like a PS2 keyboard socket is the serial (RS422) port,
used both for connecting printers and modems, and it can also work as a
network connection ("AppleTalk/LocalTalk"). But it's too slow for
10baseT. Sorry...
One workaround I've seen (on ebay--look for "SCSI Ethernet") is a
converter for a SCSI port, which is the pre-USB connector for external
harddisks, scanners, etc. The Powerbook 210 itself doesn't have a SCSI
connector, but you can add one by connecting a "mini-dock".
But when you start adding things, I think the better option is to get a
full-size dock and put in an Ethernet card into that dock. I've seen some
of these being offered on ebay, often together with a Duo and selling for
less than 50$. This full-size dock looks like a box, into which you slide
the closed Powerbook, much like you slide a video-tape into a VCR.
Or how about an Ethernet Mini Dock?

Moreover the topics on the G list are more oriented to newer PowerBooks.
On the other hand, in this list, given the very small number of 100

What do you think if we ask the list manager to **officially**

I wouldn't move the Wallstreet as it (officially) is a OS X capable

but it is still very much in the group with the Lombard and Pismo.

The Kanga however is much more like the other machines. But I think
for simplicity sake it's just easier to make the cut at G3s and

Re: IDE Drives for PB 1400 ?

Hi all,
I was actually wondering if any hard drive in the market nowadays
would actually
fit in a PB 1400.
I'm the proud owner of a 1400c/133 which works quite well with its 512 Megs
CompactFlash and its Orinoco Wifi card.
I was planning to upgrade its 1 Gig drive with a (lot) bigger one.
Pretty much any new HD will fit. At some point the manufacturers
moved the mounting holes for 2.5" disk drives. The PB5300 uses the
older pattern while the 3400c uses the newer. I don't know which the
1400 uses.

You can drill new ones if you need to. That is what I did with my
5300. But if you do have to, look at where the new holes will put
the screw heads. I had a conflict in my 5300 and had to shift the
drive lower in the housing (new drives are thinner than the original
drive in my 5300 and probably likewise with the 1400.)

I have a Wallstreet 233/513bsc. I recently acquired an Orinoco card and it

Yes, the WallStreet has two slots.
Have you tried another card in the upper slot? It's probable that
the upper slot is damaged.

No PowerBook CD-ROM drive will fit, the 5300 can't take an internal
CD-ROM drive. You'll need to hook up an external drive.

Powerbook 160 Modem identification

2004-11-24 Thread martin
I'd like to determine what model of modem card is in my PB160
without opening it up for a physical inspection. I've tried Now
Profiler, More About This Mac, Modem Buddy, and ProbeModem. None
othese has the ability to check the hardware the way Apple Profiler
does.

Without knowing which modem I have, I'm forced to use a generic
Hayes Modem script, which actually works (defaulting to a 9600 baud
connection speed). I'd really like to know what's in there. I
suspect it's a Powerport Silver or Gold. Will I have to pry my
laptop open to find out?

yes
Not always. IIRC Apple changed the specs on the Kanga RAM at the
last minute. Some memory meets both specs and some doesn't.
