RE: [RCSE] 6 volt battery for retreiver

2008-08-20 Thread Jim Monaco
Hi Jim - what I did for my Rahm retriever is get 2 big honking diodes from
the surplus store and put them in series with the power line. This cuts the
voltage down so the retriever runs nice on 12v. There are also cheaper
alternatives, I think on RCGroups there was a discussion about using a home
made resistor to do the same thing. All it was was a bottle with some lower
gauge wire in it filled with water as a heat sink run inline with the power
line.

I hated getting and maintaining a separate 6v battery, plus if you used it
up, there are generally no spares just laying around.

I can give you pics of my setup if you want.

FWIW - Jim

Subject: [RCSE] 6 volt battery for retreiver

Hello All from stormy east coast of florida, I am looking for a model
number and source for a 6 volt battery for our Rham retreiver. It should
have about 50 to 60 amp hours of capacity. This will be a reasonable sized
package - not too grunt heavy! Up to now I have been using three Trojan
T-105 for the winch and retreiver but they are old and tired. Everyone else
around here uses 12 volt winch batteries in parallel for various reasons.
Charging is one of them. So I might follow suit but I need a smaller
retreiver battery since I don't want to lug a T105 if not required! 12
volts makes the retreiver run too fast. The new fully automatic retreivers
work very well but the club budget will not stand that this year. Any
ideas? Somebody has to make a reasonable sized 6 volt battery larger than
the 20 AH things for motorcycles. Thanks, Jim

Both Visalia and The Phoenix Southwest Classic are run this way. You fly
multiple times in a round one for every class that you are eligible for.
You can get a lot of flying in this way.

I am not sure if I posted this idea before, so if I did, give it another
thought in the context of the NATs discussions that have happened of late.
Has anyone tried contests within contests? We often have classes of flyers
segregated by level, but have we done classes of planes within a contest?

Stupid idea? Great idea? My experience is limited here so I don't know
what has been tried.

[RCSE] F3J Raffle Drawing Live on RCGroups

2008-07-15 Thread Jim Monaco
OK - the tickets are torn, the box loaded up, and the tickets are all mixed
up. Tomorrow at 7:00PM MST I will have my daughter draw the winning
numbers. As each number is drawn and the winner determined I will post to
the group "F3J Raffle Winners". I will post the entire list to RCSE when
the drawing is completed. I will also list the winners on the USF3JTeam
website.

The winners will be known soon!

Good Luck to everyone.

RE: [RCSE] Contest idea....Time on tow penalty for TD?

2008-07-15 Thread Jim Monaco
There has been much talk about discriminating the scores more. There is a
new F3J rule where the last 2 meters of the landing tape are graduated.
Instead of the in/out hundred landing requirement, there will be more
emphasis on the precision of the landing. It will be interesting to see if
there is much leeway taken on the timing in order to get a better landing.

...F3j with the current rules is broken. It is very much the luck of the
timer. I know the past few team selections, which timer you had was
good for a 1 second difference in flight time
==
Mike's point may sound arcane, but it is actually central to ensuring the
fairness of this event. I made this point after the 2006 and especially the
2004 WCs. An awful lot is decided by a few tenths of a second. There is an
inherent error band in the timing of stopping the watch, and an even far
greater error band in starting it. And there is the judgment call with
respect to overflying the window, which Larry Jolly pointed out as a source
of errors this year. In 2004, the WC top places were decided by an amount
less than the possible timing error. The FAI rules committee should spend a
little time talking to experts in statistics and quality control about how
to tweak the rules so that the difference in pilot performance will be much
greater than differences occasioned by the nerve pathways of the timer.

RE: [RCSE] What does this mean for F3J WC?

2008-07-03 Thread Jim Monaco
No Jim - The zero round used to be a practice round to let the competitors
and the contest management get used to the way the rounds would be run, e.g.
hearing the timing signals etc. There practice rounds did not count for
score.

Since most of the recent events have had a warm-up competition, the kinks
are already out and there is no need for a practice round.

Checkout these websites for info:

f3jturkey.com, soarist.com and f3x.no

This W/C is the most impressive contest I've ever seen. The Turkish club
spared no expense to make their mark: "tents" that are more like
semi-permanent housing, security so good that you can leave your models
assembled on the field overnight, WiFi on the field, WiFi scoring . Your
official timer enters the result on a PDA and by the time you turn your
transmitter back in, you score is posted on all the big screen TV's on the
field for all to see (which could be a source of pride or shame :), as well
as the current leader board. This is a world class performance by the
Turkish organizers with a world class budget of over a quarter million
dollars. They clearly had lots of support. The US Team is prepared to
deliver its own world class performance largely because of your support. Jim
Monaco continues his own world class performance as team manager. Things are
going smoothly and close to budget, but fund raising will continue to be a
full time, year-around effort. We appreciate your support (and we still need
to get our models home after the contest, and that's not cheap :) Check out
the above websites for the latest news. The W/C starts Monday with opening
ceremony Sunday evening. Gotta go, I'm off to "work" (yes, it really is a
lot of work-14 hr days)

Thanks

[RCSE] US F3J Team Report

2008-06-25 Thread Jim Monaco
Greetings from Turkey.  The US Team is on the ground (mostly).  There were a
few hiccups in the travel, and we are still sorting it out here on Wed.  The
plans for reception by the organizer were great and we had a guide
personally waiting for us at the airport.  We have our personal driver and
it has been terrific.  Most of the team made it in on-time and with all our
baggage and planes.  Unfortunately the contingent coming in from the NW had
a number of problems.  Our Tower was delayed in Amsterdam and wound up
getting in at 4:00AM and had to wait until 6:00AM today to get picked up.
Their good news was that their gear all arrived.  The Rest of the NW crew
was not as lucky.  They made it in nearly on time, but neither their planes
nor large baggage made it.  After their 3 hour ride from the airport to the
hotel, they arrived at between 3 and 4AM.  Their van was not ready either,
s they had to take the team car back to the airport (another 3+ hour
ride) and persevere with the lost baggage folks to find the planes.
Eventually the planes were found, a Van was rented and they are currently
enroute to Adapazari, but too late for any practice for them today.  We got
whacked pretty good on excel baggage charges, but if we are  able to have
the same level of charges for the return trip, we should only exceed our
budget by $400 or so.

The rest of the team arrived at the field to find our palatial estate.
Other than the Turkey team, we have the largest tent area.  Tent is an
understatement.  This thing is 2 stories high with plenty of room for all of
our models and our 23 team members and supporters.  The organization is
fantastic, with everyone asking if we needed anything.  We could not be more
comfortable or welcome!  We spent most of the morning getting the equipment
organized.  The afternoon was spent practicing.   Our team is looking very
good and very comfortable with the conditions here.  Our timing drills were
very precise so we should do well.  Frankie and Phil’s practice tows were
awesome.  The other towers were still off retrieving model boxes – they will
get their workout tomorrow.

Now the bad news.  Rich Burnoski lost a Supra when the stab hit my hand
during launch.  It is hurt bad, but repairable.  Daryl blew a stab off
during launch, he flew it down inverted with flaps with no other damage.  We
need to find him a new stab.  No other carnage to report.

The weather here is as predicted, hot and humid.  Light air in the morning,
with the wind picking up in the afternoon and lightening up later in the
day.    The carnage happened in pretty good breezes.

The hotel is great WITH AIR CONDITIONING…  Everybody is really nice from the
hotel staff to the restaurants to the pubs.

I took some GREAT pictures for you, but it appears that I left my camera
cable at home, so someone else will have to post the pics.

Tomorrow we have a serious practice, and try to keep our models intact.

GO USA!

[RCSE] US F3J Team Merchandise to Stay Available

2008-06-19 Thread Jim Monaco
Thanks to everyone for your support. I have decided to not close the F3J
merchandise website this Friday as planned. We are making great progress on
the goal and are currently about $1500 from our initial budget. Our last
uncontrollable expense will be excess baggage charges for our models for the
trip to Turkey. I had budgeted a substantial increase from the previous
cycle, but the outlook of hitting that number is looking glum. Last cycle
only a few pilots got dinged with excess baggage and they were only in the
$75-$125 range. This year we have one more pilot and the excess baggage
situation looks pretty grim. We have heard of the possibility of charges as
high as $500 each way for our model boxes. What actually happens at the
airports is really up to the gate agents and skycaps. We are hoping for
some mercy, but need to be prepared for the worst.

As a result I am keeping the merchandise site open though our return when we
will have the final numbers for our expenses.

It feels like a small miracle to be as close to the goal as we are and we
want to thank everyone that has supported us, and there are too many to name
individually, but between the donors listed on the website and each and
everyone that has purchased raffle tickets or merchandise, we are eternally
grateful!

If you have not purchased any tickets or merchandise, we would still
appreciate your support. And should be overachieve, any remaining funds
will be placed in the team fund for the benefit of the next cycle.

Tickets and merchandise can be purchased at: http://www.usf3jteam.com

Thanks a bunch.

Thanks very much to everyone that has made this fundraising campaign as
successful as it has been.  We are about 1 week away from departure now and
getting very excited!  We are still working towards the final $3000 need to
balance our budget.  Your generous sales and contributions have raised about
$2000 in the last 2 weeks.  This is phenomenal…  We recently were made aware
of an accounting problem from the AMA and it added about $800 to our
fundraising needs.  We are putting a final push on to close the budget
deficit.

We will continue to take raffle sales through our return on the 8th of July.
The following Saturday the 12th of July we will draw the winners.  We will
be closing all merchandise sales on Friday 6/20/2008.  We still have a large
stock of tee shirts short/long sleeve, pockets and not.  We wanted to offer
free shipping on any in-stock order, but it was too hard to manage the
inventory, SO we are offering FREE shipping on all new orders placed now
through next Friday.  We will ship all in-stock orders before we leave.  Any
order with items not in stock will be ordered from the printer but will need
to wait for our return to be fulfilled.

Now is the time to help our budget, help us clear out some inventory and get
a great deal.

Don’t forget the great raffle.  It is actually a better source of income for
the team as every dollar goes directly to the team,  With the merchandise
sales we make about $7-$10 on each item on average and it is a lot more
work.

The team is well prepared to compete hard for the World Championship.  Your

As most of you know, I tend to sell my toys right after a contest - the
Worlds is no different. I'm taking 3 virtually pristine Supras to represent
US honor in about 2 1/2 weeks. I'll be selling 2 of them either at the

still about 12 grand shy of our budget goals. The pilots make up that

[RCSE] US F3J Team Jackets/Hats Available with correct URL

2008-05-02 Thread Jim Monaco
Team jackets and hats are now available for ordering. We are going to place
the team order on Saturday, so if you order now you can be included in the
first batch.

I only have a picture of the base jacket without the logos on it available
on the website. The jackets are dark blue with grey collar. They are
actually quite lite, but the picture makes them look heavier and warmer than
they really are. For those that care it is a Port Authority brand JP54
jacket. The hats will be a khaki color for cool summer use, with the team
logo on the front.

As soon as I have the first ones done I will take some better pictures for
the website. You can order at http://www.usf3jteam.com

Joe,

I have both versions and can address some of these issues:

Yes it is exactly the same - except of course the "fail safe" and
modulation settings. I have a few models on the 72mhz version, and
just went thru the menus one at a time copying all the settings to the
new radio. Seems to work with just a few minor trim changes.

True it is geared that way - however the RD8000 will address up to 8
channels. The most sophisticated setup is for my Kangke Monocoupe
towplane. It works elevator, rudder, throttle, 2 independent aileron
servos, 2 independent flap servos and the tow release. This setup also
handles reflex and landing flaps ON THE 3-POSITION SWITCH.
I will be experimenting with electric / full-house setups. The biggest
issue I see for F3X stuff is lack of camber control (no slider). I
really wish it had a rotary knob for heli pitch control too.

Yes - I agree and the RD8000 has room for only 10 models. I'm eagerly
anticipating the Stylus 2.4 module release!
I have a lot of brand loyalty so I'm really pleased that Airtronics
has a 2.4 system that I can use for my power planes and helis. I live
pretty close to a club field so 2.4 is a godsend. Now I can fly in the
openspace next to my house like I did before the field was built. I've
lost several planes at that field on 72mhz - to undetermined
interference which has claimed many planes there. Hopefully the 2.4
radios will eliminate that problem.

There are just 2 weeks left to register for the F3J in the Rockies. We

[RCSE] Tim McCann Gives Great Service

2008-04-21 Thread Jim Monaco
Yesterday I noticed that my quite old McCann turnaround had seized up. I
took it apart and found some metal parts had disintegrated rendering it
inoperable. I sent off an email to Tim enquiring if I could buy a new
roller and bearings or if I should get a new turnaround.

Less than an hour later he responded that the parts would be in the mail on
Monday at no charge, and asked if I could send him back the failed parts for
analysis. He said he hadn't seen one fail yet and wanted to see what
happened.

I had no expectation of even a discount on such an old and well used item,
and was blown away at his service.

Thanks Tim... Such service is much appreciated...

[RCSE] SSJSS F3J Donation

I'd like to thank the Southern San Joaquin Soaring Society and George

[RCSE] F3J in the Rockies

2008-03-13 Thread Jim Monaco
It looks like this years F3J in the Rockies, scheduled for May 24-25, will
be the largest ever. I have commitments for about 7-8 teams currently, and
we are limited to 12 teams (lanes) of 4 pilots each. If you want to try F3J
- this is the place to do it. We will have world class pilots competing,
including 3 teams comprised of members and support crew for the US team, 3
teams from RMSA with very strong pilots including Skip Miller. We have a
team from Albuquerque coming up, and the Canadian F3J team is strongly
considering attending. We will be allowing F3B winch launches instead of
hand towing. You must bring your own equipment. We also have 3 sets of
braided line club winches that we will allocate to teams on a first come
first serve basis. 2 of the 3 sets are already committed so we have one
left.

The US Team wants all the competition you can bring, so come on out and give
them a challenge.

This is a great event at a great location. Ask those who have attended in
the past, this is a fun event! If you do not have a team but still want to
come and play, sign up and I will find you a team to fly with. You can find
details at http://www.rmsadenver.com

Hope to see you there..

[RCSE] Thanks to recent F3J Team Donors

2008-02-19 Thread Jim Monaco
I'm pleased to announce that the League of Silent Flight (LSF) has again
stepped up bigtime to support our US F3J soaring team!!! I just received a
nice check that will help us greatly in our fund raising efforts. This is a
big deal for a self sustaining non-profit group to contribute to our well
being and it is GREATLY appreciated.

I'd also like to recognize a group of individual donors that handed me money
at the SWC to support the team. It started off with Gordy challenging
others to donate and several folks stepped up stuffing bills in my hand. I
didn't get everyone's name, but thanks to Gordy, Rick Bothell, and Jack
Womack and all the others that gave me small unmarked bills... :)

Thanks also to all the folks that bought shirts and raffle tickets at the
event...

We still have a long way to go, but I am cautiously optimistic that we will
reach our goals.

Remember we have the best Raffle I have ever seen for a team fundraising
event with 3 (count 'em 3) terrific brand new F3J/TD planes with a Pike
Perfect, Supra and Experience Pro along with a JR Radio system, Sirius
Charger, and magazine subscriptions - and there is more waiting to be
announced. Head over to http://www.usf3jteam.com to buy your tickets. We
also have a great selection of team merchandise available - so pick
something nice and order it...

[RCSE] Registration Open for F3J in the Rockies

2008-02-03 Thread Jim Monaco
Registration is now open for F3J in the Rockies to be held in Denver,
Colorado over Memorial Day weekend May 24-25, 2008. We expect to have a
good turnout with a number of out of town pilots including some of the US
F3J Team who will be preparing for the Worlds in Turkey!

Sign up at: http://www.rmsadenver.com/f3j_in_the_rockies.htm

Again this year we will be allowing winches. The RMSA club has 3 sets of
winches for teams that reserve them in advance. You will be using seasoned
line that is already on the winches or can bring your own line and restring
the winches with your own braided line. In addition, this year we will
allow the use of F3B winches that competitors bring themselves. We will be
determining the appropriate length of line to set out for these winches and
it may not be the same distance that we use for the braided line club
winches.

Contest entry will include lunch each day, prepared by my wife Cathy. It is
always very good...

Be sure to put this on your calendar - it is the longest running F3J contest
in the US!

RE: [RCSE] Tree story, actually a helicopter

2008-02-01 Thread Jim Monaco
On a similar note, when I was learning to fly back in the early 90s in
upstate NY, Bill Johnson the kind gentleman that that was mentoring me, said
to meet him at the flying field one afternoon. As I drove up I watched him
do a beautiful launch with his RES (something that started with an M... :)
). As I got out of the car I greeted him with "So how's it going Bill?"
and he replied with a calm "Well, it would be better if the plane was doing
what I told it... - 30 years of flying and this is the first time I ever
launched with the plane off". The plane settled into a nice thermal and
cruised over the trees at the end of the field. We jumped in the car to
chase it and about 2 miles away we saw it spiraling down slowly. We marked
the spot and drove to where we thought it came down and we saw a small field
surrounded by a superhighway on one side, a big dense housing development on
another, a nice deep river on another and a major set of power transmission
lines on the other. We got out to look around and he immediately spotted
it, smack in the middle of this tiny field right side up with no damage at
all. He picked it up and said some words that I remember to this day...
"See Jim - if you build it good, and trim it good, ya don't need no fool
behind the sticks..."

RE: [RCSE] Winter blues and USA F3J fundraising

2008-01-31 Thread Jim Monaco
Just for grins - here is the FAI teams that the AMA supports and the number
of people allowed for each team. They also support the F3J Junior team at
the same level, I am not sure about the junior teams in the other events.
You can see that the funding commitment for all of this is significant from
the AMA perspective...

F1A,B,C - three competitors per class, plus a team manager and possibly an
assistant team manager, maximum 11.
F1D - three competitors plus a team manager, total 4.
F2 - one team manger, plus an assistant team manager, total 20;
F2A - three pilots
F2B - three pilots
F2C - three pilots and three mechanics
F2D - three pilots and three helpers
F3A - three pilots plus a team manger, total 4.
F3B - three pilots, two helpers, plus a team manager, total 6.
F3C - three pilots plus a team manager, total 4.
F3D- three pilots, three caller/mechanics, plus a team manager, total 7.
F4B,C - three pilots each class, plus one team manager, total 7.
If B and C are flown at different locations and times, an additional
teammanager may be funded.
F5B,D - three pilots each class plus a team manager, total 7.
F3J - three pilots, two helpers, plus a team manager, total 6.
Spacemodels - 12 pilots plus one team manager, total 13.
U.S. reigning world champion(s) each category.

RE: [RCSE] Winter blues and USA F3J fundraising

2008-01-31 Thread Jim Monaco
I can contribute to this thread. The information is not secret, it is a
published document and applies to ALL AMA supported FAI teams and there are
quite a few of them, not just F3B/J AND we constitute some of the largest
teams. AMA contributes the following to the FAI teams:

- $400 to the team fund - this typically is allocated towards the airfare,
but can be for any team expense
- Entry Fees for all pilots, managers and support staff
- FAI registration fees
- Banquet costs for all team members
- If food is prepared and served on site by the organizers, it is paid for
- Lodging for the contest days and 1 day prior and after
(These expenses are supported as actual expenses up to 900 Swiss Francs
($832 USD) per team member - not counting the $400 for the airfare)

The US F3J team is comprised this year of 7 pilots (including Cody R. the
returning Junior WC) Junior and Senior Managers, and 4 tow people for an
entourage of 13 people. Last cycle the AMA approved funding for the Junior
team manager and 2 separate towers for the junior team, and this cycle they
waived their normal policy and are also funding the returning junior WC (who
competed in the team selections) so you can see that the AMA is INCREASING
their overall support for F3J in particular.

Unfortunately costs are very high for this trip. Airfares are nearly double
what the fares were to Martin last cycle, and since the flying site is quite
some distance from both the airport and the hotels we will have very high
ground transportation costs - we will need 3 large vans for all the people
and equipment.

The total budget for the trip looks like about $45K with AMA supporting
about $15K which is about the same as last cycle, so we have huge hill to
climb. In previous cycles the soaring community has been very generous and
we basically broke even on the last cycle. With the generosity of many
people we can hopefully raise enough funds to make the final accounting
minimally painful to the pilots and team managers (tower costs are fully
reimbursed by the team).

I also appreciate the offer of clubs adding a fee to their contests to
support the F3J team. However, as desperately as we need the funding, I am
not a fan of "taxing" pilots to support our goals. People need to support
the organizations and groups that they choose to support. I would prefer
that clubs solicit donations at their events to support the team. I am all
for specific fundraising events where pilots attend specifically to support
the team. I will be preparing a brochure that you can print and pass out for
raffle sales, merchandise sale and donations at your events, I hope to have
that done this weekend.

I am very optimistic that our supporters will again come through and help us
send a thoroughly prepared team to Turkey with nothing to worry about except
winning the golds!!!

Thanks to all of our sponsors and supporters again....

Joe, if we knew how much $ AMA does supply to support our W/C teams we would
probably say wow, that much.
That info is probably available from many sources, including the team
managers and members. Anybody wish to make that info available ?

Meanwhile, Joe, I think your suggestion of a $5.00 surcharge for every
sailplane contest for support of our F3J team is a GREAT idea. I will
propose to our club, GDSHS, that we do this and also that we add a smaller
surcharge at our monthly club contests for the same purpose.

I am going to try to spread this idea in our area, starting now.

[RCSE] US F3J Team Support

2008-01-25 Thread Jim Monaco
The US F3J team now has more ways you can support them! You can order
merchandise from http://www.usf3jteam.com - you will see that we can now
offer sweatshirts - great winter apparel!

In addition CST will be having a US F3J Team day in March where 20% of the
proceeds will be donated to the US team. You can find out the details at
the web page above.

While you're there - pick up a few raffle tickets for chances to win some
great prizes, including a Supra, an Experience Pro, or a JR 9303.

You can also make tax deductible contributions, and if your employer has a
matching grant program, you could double your contribution. See the
Donations section of the website for more details.

We have a long way to go to meet our goals, and we welcome your support!

Thanks in advance,

RE: [RCSE] Real flight 3.5

2008-01-14 Thread Jim Monaco
There is another way. You basically use the system keys to preposition your
plane at a certain altitude, then save that as a starting position. You
then load that starting position to begin a thermal flight.

As I recall there were several discussions on how to do this on the G3
forums. If you do a search for winch you should find it.

Cal, I don't know about 3.5 but I have Realflight 4. It has no launch except
handlaunch, but here's what you do.

Use the flying field called "Thermal Park." There are arrows showing various
air currents, including some pointing more or less straight up. Mouse around
until the plane is pointing right at one of the up arrows, but don't point
the nose of the plane up. Just give it a level launch onto the up arrow, and
then start circling. You'll climb out.

This is pretty cheesy, admittedly. The DS is really fun, however; even a
novice like me can get in the groove and really scream.

I think that Horizon sells a simulator that has some kind of winch launch
capability.

[RCSE] US F3J Team Website Available

2008-01-14 Thread Jim Monaco
I'd like to announce the official kickoff of the US F3J Team Fundraising
campaign! You can support the US team though merchandise purchases,
participating in the excellent raffle, and through donations. We are very
challenged this year with a lower rate of support from the AMA, extremely
high air fares to Turkey, difficult ground transportation, and a larger team
with the returning Junior World Champion. After AMA support we have about
35K to raise to meet our needs. Your support is very important to us.

We have already received generous support from the soaring vendor community,
with significant contributions for the raffle from Kennedy Composites, JR,
Soaring USA and Peak Electronics. Already the raffle has a Supra,
Experience Pro, JR 9303, a Sirius charger and contributions from Fly R/C
Magazine!

A little known way to support the team is through tax deductible cash
contributions. Since the AMA is a 503(c)(1) charitable organization you can
deduct the value of your contribution from your taxes. In addition, if your
employer has a matching donation program, you may be able use that to
increase the value of your donation. Please check with your employer to
determine if this option is available to you and how to apply for the
matching grants. Details of how and where to send your donations is on the
website in the DONATIONS link. You can be assured that every penny of your
donation goes directly to the team!

I'd like to thank you in advance for your generous support in the past and
looking forward to your support for the 2008 team!

You can access the site directly at http://www.usf3jteam.com or from a link
on http://www.usafaisoaring.com.

Thanks

Actually you can do a lot better than par in golf. A better example is
skeet or trap shooting. The task is 100 targets and you can't get more than
100. As Chris says - ya only got to count the ones you missed - and at the
upper levels if that is 1 you can plan for your ride home... Ask me how I
know... :)

Why not just have everyone fly for 10 minutes to qualify for a landing
attempt with 1 meter concentric divisions like f3J. After all, isn't
that what it's about? Why not give bonus points for landing if they are
within 2 seconds over the time. If they are short of 10 minutes then
zero flight points.

Isn't that what all the top experts do in each contest.

If you can't make the time, what makes you think you are good enough to
get landing points either?

BTW, DLG contests do MOM all the time.

The thought pattern is TOTALLY different in DLG contests. There is a
set task, either you make it or you don't. The only thing I constantly
hear is how many points did you DROP, not how many points did you
achieve.

This is not basketball, it is more like Golf. The course is rated and
you know the task (par value) and you are being measured on what you can
or cannot achieve.

RE: [RCSE] Matrix MOM

2006-10-01 Thread Jim Monaco
I have an excel program that computes all the flight groups for MoM contests
also accounting for frequency conflicts. It's the same one we use for all
of our contests including the Team Selection events. It does all of the AMA
tasks as well as F3J and handles regular matrix flight groups, and Seeded
MoM (either by total score or previous flight group). I'd be happy to send
it out to anyone that is interested.

Subject: [RCSE] Matrix MOM

While sending out scoring spreadsheets for seeded MOM, I got a request for a
spreadsheet to set up the flight groups for matrix MOM. I don't know how
many are interested, since matrix MOM is not flown too often, but I thought
I'd post this comment.

There's no need for a computer to set up the flight groups for matrix MOM,
since the process is easily done by hand. If there are frequency conflicts,
it gets more complicated, and a computer program could be used to do optimal
grouping, but let's stick to the simple case.

The process is as follows: First, determine the number of flyers in each
group. This will depend on the number of winches available. Then, give each
flyer a unique identifying number, and set the groups by permuting the
numbers. It's easiest to explain with a simple example.

Suppose there are 16 flyers and you have four winches. Then you number the
sixteen flyers like this:
1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 20, 30, 40, 100, 200, 300, 400, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000.

The first digit goes only up to 4 because there are 4 in a flight group. If
there were to be 5 in a group, it would be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50
etc.

Then make as many numbers as possible that do not contain the same pair of
digits. In this case, there are sixteen such numbers:

Groups for round 1
1234234134124123Groups for round 2
1341241231234234Groups for round 3
1412212332344341Groups for round 4

To interpret this, read each digit as the ID number of a flyer. For example,
the first group in round 4 is 1412. That means that it consists of flyer
1000, flyer 400, flyer 10 and flyer 2.

You don't have any flyers with numbers containing more than four digits, so
you can have only four rounds before you start having duplication in the
groups. If you had twenty (or more) flyers, you could have five rounds, and
so on.

Of course, there are other four-digit numbers using 1, 2, 3, and 4, but they
all contain one or more pairs of digits that are already used in the set
shown (unless I made a mistake, which is certainly possible).

With a little experimentation, you can see what happens if there are
frequency conflicts, figure out the tradeoffs between group size and number
of rounds, and so forth. You can see that it's easier to get conflict-free
groups for a big contest than for a small one, because the number in a group
is small compared to the number of flyers. Of course, small contests are
usually flown as seeded MOM, so this isn't a problem.

[RCSE] F3J Team Commemorative Shirts and Hats

2006-09-11 Thread Jim Monaco

The US F3J Team had a great performance and we thank all of
our supporters.  After all the bills are in and the accounting completed,
we had a small deficit in the budget.  In an attempt to make up some of
the deficit we are offering commemorative shirts with the signatures of all of
the team members on the back.  This would be a great way to remember the
entire team! In addition to the shirts we are also offering team hats for sale
for $20.  There is a picture of the hat on the website modeled by some
ugly guy, I hope that doesn’t hurt sales…

In order to not conflict with F3B team fundraising we will
only be selling merchandise until September 30 – we will then close down
all sales.

You can see the hat and order merchandise at: http://usf3jteam.com/Merch.php

RE: [RCSE] F3J WC Update

2006-08-06 Thread Jim Monaco
Team position is determined after the preliminaries - the flyoff scores do
not count toward the team score.

The juniors are doing VERY well and still have 2 flights that we hope to get
in tomorrow. We are in the protect the lead mode and will be quite
conservative.

We had a good day for the seniors as well. Joe and Tom both swapped around.
Joe put a hurting on some teams in some very light air. Tom put in some
solid flights to hold his position and Skip had a very tough round in the
rain where no-one made their times, but he was a little short of the winner
of the round.

We expect a bunch of rain again tomorrow so we have no idea how many more
rounds we might get in.

[RCSE] US F3J Team Update

2006-08-06 Thread Jim Monaco

I’m writing this on Thursday
morning.  We had an excellent day on Wednesday.  The senior pilots
are getting into the groove.  All the senior flights were excellent.  Joe
had a hectic day between launching for everyone and running back to the hangar
to repair his light model that was badly damaged in a midair.  He test
flew the repair this morning and it looks pretty good.  Tom has been very
consistent and is maintaining his position in the top 10.  Joe and Skip
have some work to do to make it into the top 12, but there are plenty of rounds
left.  Skip had some odd radio issues all day yesterday.  He flet
that his plane was not responding well at distance and several flights were
very interesting, but he did a great job making them work.  He ultimately
determined that his PCM receiver was masking poor range.  He swapped in an
FM receiver and immediately discovered terrible range.  After doubling the
antenna – his range was back and he flight tested the plane early in the
morning and it appears all is well for today.

The juniors have been flying awesome the
last few rounds.  They had been chasing the Germans and finally today
moved into the lead.  All of our junior pilots are currently in the top 12
with 2 rounds to go.  Now we need to protect the lead.

We will have 3 rounds of seniors today and
then restart the juniors at the end of the day.

Go USA!

Jim

OK – US Team had a better day
yesterday… I hope to find time for a report later.

Skip was not injured – it was Joe’s
right hand.  His hand was hit by the line because he is now using the
right hand to align the line while he is pulling back with the left.

No major damage and he is fine today.
He thinks the line broke because it had been nicked by his jacket previously.

The loss of time was a hurt for Skip and the
team.  We have a lot to make up after 2 chute failures and a line break…

Rumor has it that the fastener is actually a component used in bikes to
fasten the spokes. I have not tried to find it, but it might be possible.

[RCSE] RE: F3J in the Rockies ...Sailplanes Flown???? Argh! :-)

2006-05-30 Thread Jim Monaco

Arrg – since this was a tuneup for
the worlds, each and every competitor was sworn to secrecy.  The new and
fabulous soaring machines used in this event were not to be disclosed.  Spectators
were made to sign waivers, and no optical enhancement devices were allowed.  A
local national guardsman borrowed an Apache to ensure that none of the paparazzi
helicopters were allowed to get close enough for pictures.  And he had to
patrol up to 12,000 feet agl because these new machines flew so high.

I can disclose that the Canadian team was
flying a never before seen design that performed quite well.  I’m
pretty sure you can guess what Mr. Wurts won with. Rolf could tell you what
birds he flew to second place – but he’d have to kill you
afterward.   Mr. Lewan was flying a classic Samba sailplane. Mr. Newcomb
was flying both classic and new Muller planes. Mr. Miller was using the latest
and greatest from Mueller and Samba and Mr. Kappus was flying an own design and
built bird.

Beyond this brief description – no record
was kept of the 3 planes allowed each competitor or what they actually flew for
each round.  And if there was a record (which there was not) then it blew
away in the 30+ gusts during the day.  And if it is ever found, then the
FBI will appear to seize said records because they are actually classified national
security documents.

[RCSE] F3J in the Rockies Results

2006-05-29 Thread Jim Monaco
Sorry if this posted more than once - my posts seemed to go into the bit
bucket - probably because of the tables I put in with results. I have since
posted the results on the RMSA web page - see the links below.

It was 2 days of brutal competition, with very challenging conditions. We
had the US senior and most of the US Junior team there, as well as the
Canadian team coming down for a warmup before the worlds. We also had folks
from Chicago, Phoenix and North Carolina there. It was typical Colorado -
with big lift and big sink. Now normally Denver is not a windy place - but
it seems every time we put on an F3J event we get the wind. This year was
no exception. Day 1 was beautiful - but the wind averaged 18mph all day
long with gusts well above that. The good news is that it stayed the same
direction all day so we didn't have to move the flightline. In the late
afternoon the gusts took their toll on the scoring tent and bent it to
pieces. Shortly after that we quit after 5 rounds. We started up again
Sunday morning and while it started out breezy, the morning had some
excellent flying conditions, but if you made bad decisions - the sink dragon
was there to punish you. We flew 3 more prelim rounds in the morning and
then broke for lunch and prepared for the flyoffs. The following top 6
pilots made the flyoffs:

1. Skip Miller

2. Joe Wurts

3. Robert Lewan

4. Rolf Oetter

5. John Kappus

6. Joseph Newcomb

The detailed preliminary scores can be found at:
http://www.rmsadenver.com/Scores/2006/f3j-p/f3jrp.htm

After lunch and before the Flyoffs started the conditions deteriorated
rapidly. It became windier than Saturday and we were guessing that we were
approaching the FAI limits. But it's a flyoff - so the top 6 pilots
wrangled towers and callers and prepared for battle. If you had enough guts
and went far enough downwind, but not so far as to fail to get back, you
could get your time. But for many - that was not the case. You can see
from the scores that much pain was dealt out in the flyoffs. But the killing
blow was dealt by Joe Wurts in the third round, who snuck away trying to
avoid the sink directly on the field and managed to get his time while his
nearest competitor (including reflights) was only able to get less than 50%
of his time and many much less. This put Joe far in the lead. The fourth
round of the flyoffs found everyone pretty much getting a bunch of time, but
the wind had switched almost 90 degrees making launches a scary proposition
and causing many line problems. We had a choice of turning the flight line
into the wind, or calling it quits - and after a pilot vote we chose to end
the event. The final order was:

1. JOE WURTS

2. ROLF OETTER

3. BOB LEWAN

4. JOSEPH NEWCOMB

5. SKIP MILLER

6. JOHN KAPPUS

The details of the final standings of the Flyoffs can be found at:
http://www.rmsadenver.com/Scores/2006/f3j-f/f3jrf.htm

[RCSE] US F3J Team Donation Thanks

I’d like to publicly thank Soaring USA for their
generous contribution to the US F3J team.  While we have not yet achieved our
funding goals, the continuing contributions of the soaring community, vendors
and pilots, takes us ever closer.

Please be sure to thank these fine contributors with your
patronage!

Shirt sales and raffle tickets are still on sale at http://www.usf3jteam.com.

[RCSE] US F3J Donations - Thanks!!!

2006-02-16 Thread Jim Monaco

One of the distinct privileges of being the US Team Manager
is the opportunity to be involved with the fantastic people in the soaring
community.  I am very humbled by the generous support of the people and
clubs in this sport.  In addition to the recent donations by Airtronics,
JR and Kennedy Composites, I recently received very generous donations from the
Harbor Soaring Society, and the LSF.  I know that it is difficult to
justify such donations from small organizations and I continue to be amazed and
thankful for their thoughtfulness.  If you happen to run into our donors,
be sure to thank them for their support of our US team!

I have updated the website listing our donors and have
included a fund raising progress meter on the home page!  You can now
track the progress of the team towards our funding goals!

We have decided to keep the online shirt sales open and will
place monthly orders with the printer to fulfill your custom orders.  We
have done quite well with the sales so far.  We had a little glitch with
our printer and the already ordered shirts came much later than promised due to
some family issues with the printer.  They finally fedexed a batch of the
shirts to me in Phoenix
for sale there and the rest were ready when I returned from the SWC.  We
will be mailing out all of the shirts you ordered online very shortly.
Due to strange postal rates we will be mailing out orders of 2 or 3 shirts in
separate envelopes, so if you get one and ordered 2 or more please wait a few
days before emailing me to see of the other one shows up.

The raffle is doing very well.  We will have even more
prizes announced in the future, but the Supra and the Stylus should be encouragement
enough to participate!

You can add YOUR support for the team by purchasing
merchandise or raffle tickets at http://www.usf3jteam.com.

Thanks for ALL of your support!

[RCSE] SWC Thanks

2006-02-13 Thread Jim Monaco

I started out running an F3J practice for the US team on
Thursday. George Joy was kind enough to lend the US F3J team the club winches
to run the kinda, sorta F3J contest with both winches and hand tow.  It
went quite well, and while the winch launches were not as fast at the hand tows
they were not that bad.  As you would expect, Skip, Joe and Daryl (do we
need last names) were at the top of the heap.  We got 3 rounds of 10
minutes in between 9:30 and 1:00pm before a bizarre windstorm arrived.  I
had just called for a 15 minute lunch break and Joe saw it coming and hollered
and everyone ran for their planes.  It looked like a wall of dirt coming
at us.  We protected the planes for a while and then some rain drops
threatened us, and it looked like another wall of dirt was approaching so I
called it off.  If we had been in the air when that storm arrived it would
have been very ugly!  It was a great practice for the team and a good
warmup for the contest.

Many thanks to the CASL club for the great contest they put
on this weekend!  George and his crew worked through a few teething pains
and got things running smoothly by the second day.  It’s a ton of
work to put on a contest of this size and a very small crew of dedicated
members made it happen! The weather was great, the landings were challenging
but not ridiculous and we landed mostly crosswind, not downwind.  There
was a lot of up air and some gnarly down.  As other have said, the format
was a mixture of international duration (that a lot of folks call “precision
duration”) and a 3 flight add-em-up with 23 minutes out of 30.  The
add-em-up is a great format for a called flight order event, since it gives you
a little slack if you are called up in the big sink cycle, and there were a few
of those.  The down side is that a lot of folks will make their times so
the landing are even more important.

Daryl was a machine in the LZ and Joe made a great comeback
in the landing zone on the second day to jump into second place.  Junior Joseph
Newcomb from the RMSA club captured 3rd place with a consistent
landing performance.  On a personal note I was having a great event,
landing well with a couple of 25s and was in 6th place before the
last round.  A bad decision to covet another thermal across the field, and
the disgusting sink in between forced me to miss my time and significantly drop
my position… L  I’m
getting really good at having “learning” experiences…

We did some fund raising for the US F3J team, selling tee
shirts and raffle tickets at this event and we did very well!  Thanks to
all the pilots and others that gave generously to support the team, your
contributions are much appreciated.  Our major sponsors, Airtronics, JR
and Kennedy Composites deserve much credit for supporting this team and soaring
in general.  Be sure to thank them with your patronage! We still have a
long way to go to meet the budget for taking the team to the World
Championships in Martin Slovakia, so please support the team by purchasing a
shirt, or some raffle tickets for the Airtronics radio and the Supra, or just
make a donation at http://www.usf3jteam.com.

Be sure to plan to make this event in 2007 – it’s
always a challenge and lots of fun!

know he’ll be jealous… J

Now all I need is some free time to test fly it – but
between my work schedule and heading for the SWC on Wed. there will not be
time.  It will be waiting for me when I get back…

Byron is also finishing up #45, his personal plane.
He’ll probably get it in the air before mine.

Okay guys,

Big atta boys to Barry Kennedy and Airtronics for stepping behind our USA F3J
team!

Last year LJ and his brain Carolyn,
really got things going with the F3J Team shirts (specially "I'm NOT
GordySoar" versions did pretty well ;-).  Hats off to them again!

So lets put our glue money where our
support SHOULD be, show some patriotism and open your checkbooks.

I am sending off $100 tomorrow for the
raffle, who's gonna match?

Come on guys, sure we can win a Supra or
a new Airtronics radio, but the real reason is to get some cash up to send our
guys off with a decent amount of cash to make sure they are outfitted,
supplied, practiced and with out worries about having to fund it all
themselves.

This is OUR USA team going to the
Worlds.  I was there last year in Calgary
and proud to see our guys working together, standing tall.  And its not
only pilots!  Our towers are dead serious and critical to the success of
the team, as is the manager etc.

Meet my Challenge, lets hear about your
support!

$100...or $10, or $500... Go USA
F3J!

Finally home for a couple of days!

If you are interested in participating in this event to be
held on Thursday 2/9/06 at the Phoenix SWC venue, please sign up on the website
prior to 1/20/06.  I will be closing entries and arranging teams,
resources and computing the flight matrix after that date.  This is a
great opportunity to see some real F3J competition flights and participate in
the event.  Remember – even if you can’t tow, and don’t
want to deal with the hand tow part, we will have winches available for
launching thanks to the CASL club (George Joy).
Sign up and I’ll find you a team to play with.

I’m still looking for some help for the US team for towing.
If you are going to be in the area, or are a Phoenix local and would like to help the team
out with some towing, please contact me.  You don’t need to be there
the whole day, and while you need to be physically fit, you don’t need to

All participants are welcome, experienced or not. The purpose of this
event is to provide competition like experience for the US team in preparation for the
World Championships in July 2006.

It is also intended as a demonstration event to interest those that have never
participated in an F3J event and also as a team fund raiser.
The entry fee will be a donation to the team to be collected at the event.

Those wishing to participate as a real hand-tow F3J team must arrange for their
own towers for the event. We will be allowing 4 person teams so each team is
capable of towing for themselves. If you desire to arrange your own team, you
may do so and please indicate your team members on your entry form. If you wish
to use hand-tow and are capable of assisting by towing and do not have a team
of your own choosing, then the organizer will group like-minded individuals
together. If you have hand-tow equipment you should bring it - if not, we will
TRY to arrange for at least one member of the team to have equipment.

Those not capable or desiring to hand tow will be grouped randomly together in
teams of 4 by the organizer and these groups will be assigned a normal US club
winch to use for the competition. These winches will have braided nylon line.
One team member should be downline to retrieve the line in the event of a
pop-off or relaunch. Whining about the power of the winches or the stretch of
the line or low launches will result in immediate laughter by the CD.

You must sign up in advance to allow the creation of the flight
matrixes.  You can sign up at http://www.rmsadenver.com.
No payment is necessary at this time – payments will be collected
at the event.

This is your opportunity to participate in an F3J-like event and see
how fun the F3J rules can be… J

2005-11-17 Thread Jim Monaco
My understanding is that it will be Feb 11-12. There has not been an
announcement opening registration yet. George Joy will be the CD.

This is a good change in the dates, in previous years we ran concurrent with
a big golf tournament and that made rooms and flights more difficult to get.
And we also avoid the Superbowl conflict on the 5th.

[RCSE] Challenge the US F3J Team at the SWC!!!

2005-11-16 Thread Jim Monaco

As acting team manager for the US F3J team I am working on
novel ideas for providing challenging practice sessions for the team.  One
idea I am kicking around is to sponsor an informal F3J competition on the Thursday
prior to the SWC.  While Friday would be logistically better we would
severely interfere with frequencies and real estate for those coming in to
practice just for the SWC on Friday. Monday is out since the field is not
rented for that day and there are no known venues in the Phoenix area that we could use.

I am considering bringing a couple of club winches to the
event and while the US Team will be practicing real F3J launches, we could also
have pilots launching off the winches at the same time.  We could argue ‘til
the cows come home whether the winches are better or worse and give someone an
advantage/disadvantage but FOCUS!!! This is an informal fun event – it just
does not matter.  If you have F3J equipment, bring it and find some towers
and have at it.  We’ll even supply F3J equipment to a few groups if
you can get towers and want to give F3J a try.  If you don’t have
equipment but want to give F3J a try, you can use the winches.  I’ll
take the responsibility of grouping pilots into teams, remember there is no team
score, teams are just arrangements for working together (calling, towing, etc).
I’ll be bringing the sound system we used at the Team Selections, so we’ll
have the real thing.

I need to gauge if this is realistic and if there are enough
interested pilots to participate.  If you think you would like to
participate on Thursday, please send me an email and indicate if you want to
use the winches or hand tow and if hand tow, whether you need equipment.

Prizes (if any) are to be determined – remember this
is a low budget operation… J

Thanks - Jim

Had a great experience of flying with US best pilots in some very
challenging conditions. I'm sure more reports will surface after
people recover. Want to say that I had the distinct honor and
privilege of being the Idaho pilot who was adopted by RMSA flyers Jon
Pedilla; Mike Verzuh; and event organizer Jim Monaco. Their
generosity and enthusiasm for this sport were exemplary. They shared
information and equipment and stayed "in it" and helped each pilot
when it was his turn to fly even though we faced many challenges. The
RMSA club did a great job and put out a huge effort. Jim had hoped to
turn over the event and put on his pilot hat but this was not to be.
He was always available to help and was a true sportsman through some
difficult trials. I remember Jim working his way back to our slot 13
and as soon as he hit the chair he appeared to hit a button that
called him back to the tent. In a 15 min round Jim popped off but
kept his composure and managed a max and hunski for a 1000 point
round. In the next round we watched in horror as his ICON veered off
and destroyed itself for a 5.29 point round.. Very sad. Yet he kept
his composure. I learned a great deal from my team and from flying
with the best in the US and perhaps the world. Hats off to the team
and everyone who participated. An unforgettable experience. Tom
Kiesling, Joe Wurts and Skip Miller demonstrated some outstanding
flying over three tough diverse days and will represent our country
well. Sincere congratulations.

[RCSE] US F3J Team Selection Final Standings

2005-08-21 Thread Jim Monaco

Well, it’s a done deal.  The new US F3J team is Tom
Kiesling, Joe Wurts and Skip Miller with Craig Greening as the alternate.

The juniors are Joseph Newcomb, Casey Adamczyk, and Cody
Remington.

These pilots deserve their place on the team.  They survived
some very difficult conditions with many flights out past the limits of my
vision.  Surprisingly the 15 minute task was achievable even in the morning if
you flew far enough.

I hope someone posts some more details – I know I’m
too tired.

Congratulations to the US
team – and good luck in Martin,
 Slovakia!

The final scores are posted at: http://www.rmsadenver.com/Scores/2005/f3jts/totals.htm

I will post the detailed round scores and the plane
registration sheets as soon as I recover.

Another brutal day.  Finicky air, then bunches of wind,
downwind launches.  We had every weather Colorado has to offer…. All today!

Even the best took some hits today but they continue to
shine, Tom Kiesling is amazing, that Joe guy always impresses and Skip is
consistent as always.  These guys round out the top three with Craig
Greening hot on their heels in fourth.

If tomorrow is like today the anything can happen.
While the 10 minute rounds were difficult, tomorrow the 15s will something to

RE: [RCSE] National Fun Fly - NOT

2005-08-03 Thread Jim Monaco
I'm missing something here. The Nats is the national championship because we
say it is. Why do we want to thow the baby out with the bathwater. If you
want a national funfly - then organize one. There are 51 other weeks you can
do whatever you want at the national flying site.

A lot of people work VERY hard to put on an event the size of the nats and
apparently a lot of people LIKE to attend the event. Your statements about
declining participation are not true. Based on the statistics for the last 2
nats, participation is up in all of the events except HL. Your statement about
20-40 pilots flying any given day is ludicrous. There are 160 registered
entrants and 125 pilots participated in Unlimited! While some people (including
me) have opinions on how the event should be organized and what should be
included, ultimately the LSF makes those decisons with our input.

If YOU want a national funfly - then YOU organize one and see if they come! I
don't see the need to trash a perfectly good event that, in terms of numbers of
soaring pilots, is in the top 3 of all soaring events in the country.

I understand that YOU don't like soaring competitions, but it is not necessary
to criticize those that do. You refer to "diehard" competition pilots as if
it's a bad thing. I understand your agenda is to promote scale soaring and I
wish you great success, but it does not have to come at the expense of other
facets of the hobby. You appear to think that those that like "Launch and
Land" competitions are odd, but I'm sure that there are some that think that
worrying about how my cute little pilot figure looks in my scale glider is a
little odd too!

Let people participate in whatever events they enjoy - it's no skin off your
nose. If you provide the alternatives, perhaps you are right and competition
soaring as we know it will die the ugly death you predict. Just don't expect
others to implement your vision of true happiness.

[RCSE] US F3J Team Selection Available Frequencies

As of today (6/8/05) nearly all pilots are on their own frequency. The
following frequencies are clear and available for use:
14
23
24
25
27
30
33
37
45

If you have not yet signed up, it would be helpful if you were able to
choose from these frequencies. If you are not – then you MUST choose a

You can call the hotel at the above number or the toll free line 800-733-7663.
Be sure to use the block number B522R when reserving the room or they can find
it under "Rocky Mountain Soaring Association".

I am not making reservations for you - I just set up the block.

I also have a quote but not a block number from the Marriott Courtyard Inn on
Tower Rd. They quoted me a rate of $89 for reservations for Thursday checking
out Monday. Weekday rates are very high, if you want to come in early - say
Wed. then the rate is $139. I am waiting for a block confirmation number for
this - so if you want the courtyard please wait until I make the announcement.

Holiday Inn does not return my calls... Wonder what I did...

[RCSE] F3J Team Selection Registration

2005-06-16 Thread Jim Monaco
There is just over 1 month left to the cut-off for registration for the 2005
Team Selections. Be sure to get your registration in to the AMA and RMSA. If
you have not received a registration form from the AMA, you can download an
electronic copy you can print and send in to the AMA with your $75 registration
fee from this link:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/USA_FAI_Soaring/files/2006%20F3J%20Program%20Entry%20Form.doc

You also need to register with RMSA and can do that online at
http://www.rmsadenver.com/f3j-ts.htm.

Registered participants need to be associated with a team. Please use the
"Create or Join Teams" link to manage your teams. Those that do not have an
established team can create a "public" team and allow others to join them.
Private teams are managed by the team creator. If you wish to join a private
team, contact the team creator and ask to join and have the team creator add
you to the team. Anyone can join a public team.

There are currently a number of registrants that are not currently associated
with any team. Note that you MUST be a member of a team prior to the
registration cutoff which is when we manage the frequencies and prepare the
flight matrix.

It is NOT the responsibility of the organizer to assemble or assign teams - YOU
must coordinate team participation. I have provided this tool to help
participants find others and join in teams. The sooner you register and
advertise for teammates, the likelier you will be successfull.

See you in August...

RE: [RCSE] F3J in the Rockies Results (Revised)

2005-05-31 Thread Jim Monaco
Due to an unfortunate sorting problem, probably induced by adding a column
in the scoresheet to add in the preliminary scores, the actual order of the
standings was incorrect at the pilot's meeting. While the scores were
correct, they were in the wrong order in the final sheet resulting in the
incorrect awarding of the Trophys.

The Pilots have been contacted and the process is underway to get the
appropriate awards to the winners.
Sorry for the mistake.

The corrected standings are on the website at:

The results are in and Gordy had a terrible spate of bad luck. The good
news is that there was only one other plane totaled (Rich O'Connell on
launch) and a couple of planes with minor damage. While the air was
challenging on Sat, today brought overcast skies, cool (55 degree) temps and
much more difficult air. The blood was flowing in nearly every round. Rich
Burnoski flew a great final day and improved his standing from 7th to
second. Skip Miller continued to dominate with his excellent flights in
horrid conditions. While only Skip, Rich and Lenny Keer managed to make it
through the finals without one zero round, Skip was clearly the master, with
only one minor hit and 3 1000 rounds!

Attrition was severe as participants dropped out of the finals for various
reasons. Lots of zero rounds were recorded as the lift carried everyone
wy downwind - and with terrible sink on the way back. While there were
a lot OUT landings, there were no damaged planes.

Congratulations to Skip, Rich and Lenny who showed what difficult condition
soaring is all about!
