Error message after every email deletion

2021-12-09 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

TB! has recently started giving me these error messages as soon as I delete an
email. If I answer NO to the query, a second slightly different error message
pops up. If I once again answer no, that is the end of the error messages.
Anyone have and idea why this should be occurring?

Adrian & Rick,

Adrian, your suggestion is I'm sure a good one in that it gets all your
personally owned data out of the clutches of MS. I don't have a partitioned
disk however and would rather not undertake such a project in light of my
almost flawless record of screwing thing up. I think it's sufficient to have the
address book files stored in %appdata% where it seems they should reside.

Rick, fortunately I won't have to try any of the things you suggested since I
was able to resolve the problem by doing the things outlined in my previous
email to Adrian.

Thanks to you both for the help.

Jack
Move your mail directory from APDATA to MY Documents Restart the bat and mpint
the mail directory to the new location. If there is ANY issue go to windows
explorer and to your new mail folder and add yourself to the security lost with
full permissions and propagate it to all items in the folder. You can zip up
the original mail folder to the desktop for restoration in case something goes
HORRIBLY WRONG
Which it won't but you have a path to step back ward

You probably will not have to add yourself to the permission list not take
ownership of the folder
And yes, if you have permissions as ADMINISTRATOR or EVERYONE you should
logically NOT have to add your account name with full permissions. Agreed.
Microsoft Agrees. Yet it magically fixes just this type of issue

I have a small book of fixes that Microsoft swears you do not have to do yet
when you do them, the issue magically disappears

Actually Adrian what I finally ended up doing was to move all my ill-named files
from the %appdata%\roaming folder and from the Program Files (x86) folder to a
temporary desktop folder so TB! couldn't find them. Then I took the
jackADDRBOOK.INI file and renamed it to simply ADDRBOOK.INI, and then renamed
the jack.abd file to The Bat.abd and I was eventually able to get all my
addresses to appear with only the necessary files now located in the
%appdata%\roaming folder accessible to TB!.

The final proof of success was to remove the administrator privileges from the
shortcut used to start TB! and still be able to open/close both TB! and the
address book without the error message which started this thread.

The windows-version macros still don't work but that is merely an annoyance.

Once again, my profound thanks to all who contributed their knowledge.

Well, I tried what you suggested, for quite a while to no avail. Some attempts
resulted in an address book containing a single address which was to The Bat!
Team. All my personal addresses were gone. No amount of copying the
jackADDRBOOK.INI file to a couple of different locations and then loading
from those locations ever resulted in my regaining my complete address book.
Only when I loaded from the Program Files(x86) location would my addresses come
back.

So, for the moment I'm giving up. I had already given the TB! shortcut
permission to run as an administrator which solved the original problem in the
first post.

It's entirely possible I'm doing something wrong (as is my wont) but I'll never
know without further experimentation, which scares the squat out of me.

Nevertheless, I appreciate your help.

I have a better idea. Put it in a directory you create yourself,
ideally on a different partition from the Windows partition, and
not in any of the directories created by Windows itself.

I believe the escelated privileges on the Program Files folders was added in
Windows 8. Personally, I consider this a good thing, Program Files should only
contain the files necessary to run applications. Data for an application should
be stored in the Registry or in the current user's "home" directory. This is a
very similar set up to the *nix operating systems. The added benefit is, when
backing data up, you should only have to worry about backing up your user's
home directory.

Good luck!

I was almost ready to change my account to administrator when I checked User
Accounts in Control Panel. It shows me as an administrator already, prompting
yet
another brain meltdown (if I'm already an administrator, why wouldn't TB! run
properly?)

I queried the web about administrator accounts in Windows 10 and found this
interesting URL:
http://www.ghacks.net/2014/11/12/how-to-enable-the-hidden-windows-10-administrator-account/
It explained that there are two administrator accounts in Win 10, one of which
is not initially enabled. My account is the one that is enabled but gets UAC
prompts. The other one apparently does not. So, in the interest of safety I've
elected to tolerate the UAC prompts from now on and will not enable the other
administrator account.

Thanks for your help and concerns.

Nit a good idea to login to Windows with administrator rights all the
time. Apart from actual software installs, you should look very
critically at software that won't run without administrator rights
after it has been installed. Apart from CD burning software, almost

My Windows login for Windows 7 Ultimate does NOT have administrator

Based on your email I tried running TB! as an administrator (I assumed my

So I set the shortcut properties to always run TB! as an administrator and that
part of the problem is solved.

Right now I'd settle for them running as they once did. Alas, even running TB!
as an administrator fails to correct the problem with (at least) those two
macros.

"Run As Administrator" and sure enough, the problem disappeared. I'm pretty sure

their computers as administrators and knocked everybody down a notch when they
switched to Win 10.

That said, the %WINDOWSPLATFORMNAME, %WINDOWSCSDVERSION macros still refuse to

In any event, thanks for helping.

Possibly a file permissions issue. Unless you are running (or running

They work for me. It would be nice if their function could be extended
to display 32-bit or 64-bit after the version numbers (in my case,
64-bit for both Windows and TB!).

I'm not positive, but I'm guessing this is a permissions issue. The Program
Files directories require special permissions to write into. If you click on
your account in the tree in TB!, the pane that usually shows your email listing
by folder will now show your acocunt settings. It'll list Program Mail
Directory and Account Home Directory with Edit links on the far right. I think
if change the Program Mail Directory to %APPDATA%\The Bat!\ that will point it
to C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\The Bat!\. Once you've
copied all your mail folders over to this directory, you can point your Account
Home Directory(ies) appropriately.

Of course, back everything up before attempting this.

I'm just pulling this from memory, so if anyone else can confirm or fix what
I've suggested...?

Good luck!

2016-07-28 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

Well I finally made the leap to Win 10 before the cutoff date for the free
upgrade (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) and it seems to have gone ok. Except -
Whenever I try to close TB I get an error message which states:

Cannot open file "C:\Program Files (x86)/The Bat!/jackADDRESSBOOK.INI

I click OK and TB! closes.

Or - If I open the address book and try to close it, I get the same message.
Clicking OK closes the error dialog box and then I have to click the red X again
to close the address book.

I re-installed my version 6.0.12 using the "repair" option but it made no
difference.

Anyone else experience this after going to Windows 10, and if so, what can be
done about it? The only other hiccup I've seen is that the Windows information
macros no longer work as you can see from my sig.

I also get this, very occasionally, and the once or twice that I
investigated the stack traceback that was produced, it seemed
that The Bat! had called a Windows kernel procedure that was the
actual source of the offending instruction. I figured this
absolved The Bat! and looked no further.

I was pleased, however, upon restarting The Bat! that no data

Well, you are the first who has seen anything like this,
so it is encouraging from that point of view.

I can't imagine what it might be here, though -

I'm not sure whether it will help you, but I experience the same problem
although under different circumstances.

I run Mozy as an online backup system, and when it is running, it seems to
lock my message files (although it is not supposed to). If I download email
while the backup is running, I get a similar message about not being able to
store message, with the same sort of file name. These files also disappear so
that I am unable to do something constructive like manually import them at a
later time.

Perhaps something is preventing access to the message files of this particular

I guess they aren't created in the first place. You could try if
ProcessMonitor works on Wine. Then you could monitor The Bat! and
check which files it attemps to write and if there are any error
messages.

As the other accounts work and these are POP3 as well check for any
differences in the account settings. Mainly the Options where the home

Yeah, I know - except it is a TB! message, internally
generated, not a Linux or Wine message. So .. I really had
hoped someone would recognize it :-/

The frustrating thing (apart from the other accounts
working perfectly), is that these bat*.tmp files seem to

I don't know about the program, but *I* have all

That sounds VERY attractive, but at this stage of the game
I don't have the first clue how to begin.

I expect I do have the resources; I'm running on a Dell
Inspiron laptop with a 2Gz dual core Pentium CPU and 4G of
RAM.

> An additional advantage is that I can access TB! from any machine on my

I don't actually need that capability, but I can see how
it might be useful to some.

And maybe it would run some apps I'd like to keep which
(according to the Wine community) do NOT run in Wine. I
really need to be able to run Corel, too; Inkscape does a
lot, but not everything I need.

Where Linux is concerned, I am truly 'only an egg'. I will
eventually get up to speed, but I don't suppose it will
happen overnight.

Thank you for offering another option, though. I am happy
to run with native applications if they can use my data,
but there are some things that just don't seem to be
available, so it will be necessary to keep some Win apps.
I'll keep this, and I may come back to you.

That could be, but I have no idea how to find out.
There is no such file that I can find in any directory
under TheBat!, or under Wine that has a .tmp extension.

It seems to be deleting it after the fact.

But what I really don't understand is why this is
happening in *this* account, but not in the others. They
are all defined as POP. The others have more security on
them, but that's the only difference I can see.

Unless the fact that the POP server is defined as an ip
would be causing a problem?

There is an exceptions log, if that would be of use?

> What file system are you using in Wine?

I don't know how to find that out, either.

I have left the Wine configuration strictly alone, because
I don't understand any of it's controls. The only thing I
changed on it was to stipulate Win7 as the OS. On looking
again, I can't find anything in the config that stipulates
a file system.

I too have switched my systems from Windows to Linux (using Xubuntu
10.04.4) and am still using TB! but not via Wine, which I've never
installed. Instead, I installed Oracle's VirtualBox program, created
virtual machines, loaded my Windows into the VMs, and run TB in that
virtual machine.

Given adequate RAM (I'm running 2 GB) and CPU (hyperthreaded Pentium 4
here) performance of TB! is equal to what it was under native WinXP, and
there's no problem of compatibility at all. Setting up the virtual machine
took a little time, particularly in the area of making sure the internet
connections worked properly, but once established, it runs error-free.

An additional advantage is that I can access TB! from any machine on my
LAN, via the RDP server built into VirtualBox. In fact I'm posting this
reply from another box using that capability.

Is TheBat perhaps writing a cache file named "bat!.tmp", which
contains a non-low-ASCII character, which fails on Wine?

What file system are you using in Wine?

Strange error message

2012-03-17 Thread Lynn

Hi Batters -

I recently migrated from Win7 to Linux. I fully expected
to have to give up TheBat! after all these years of
dependency, but I was thrilled to find it loaded perfectly
in Wine (v1.3.30, if anyone is interested). I loaded up my
isp account and my several gmail accounts, and held my
breath and pushed the fetch button. They all responded as
expected. I tested send, and had transport in both
directions. Home free, right?

Then I tried to load my personal account from my personal
mail server, which runs Dovecot. I loaded it up, and when
I told it to fetch, nothing happened. I loaded it to POP,
like the others. On doing some testing, I found to my fury
that Thundebird fetched it fine.

I. Can't. Live. With. Thunderbird. Especially not when all
the rest of the accounts work fine in TB!.

There are 1,900+ messages parked on that server, and
apparently TB! can see them, because it counts them off as
it goes, but it doesn't bring them to the inbox.

The error messages show in the bottom log bar, but not in
the account log.

The messages are: FETCH - could not store message (file
name-c:\users\lynn\temp\bat*.tmp) String looks like hex, 4
characters.

And, when it is finished not fetching the messages it
counts off:

FETCH - Failed to store all received the messages into the message base.
Downloaded 1956 messages, stored 0 message(s).

I'm stumped. My Linux mentors are stumped. I know that
RitLabs does't support Linux or Wine, but this seems to be
a TB! error. And I know that there are a few rogue batters
who are successfully running TB! in Wine.

And I'm praying to the cyber gods that there is at least
ONE person here, or perhaps someone who can point me to
someone, or a place, where I can find out how to fix this.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light - .

Oh ... I'd like to know whether TB! is a 32 bit or 64 bit
app - I looked on the site, but couldn't find it. tia.

Best -

2011-01-13 Thread Amy J. Schneider
As it turns out, the question is all moot. I'm going to be switching to a
new, better provider tomorrow, and I've also begun migrating to Thunderbird
(and did get some help with connecting that from my host). Not just because
of this glitch -- I had other concerns and "broken" stuff in The Bat and
this just kind of tipped me into finally switching to TB. Sorry, but it's
just not intuitive for me, and I'm usually pretty comfortable with
adjusting software settings. Just couldn't afford the time to tinker and
troubleshoot anymore.

Thanks for all of your help and info, I really do appreciate it. Best
wishes to everyone.

Your outgoing mail travels over your ISPs network when it leaves your
computer before it reaches your hosting company's servers. Some ISPs
block outgoing email that isn't relayed via their own servers. I
couldn't tell you what error message you would encounter, or if it
would just be failure to connect to the server - I have never had an
ISP that did that. Check with your hosting company if anything is
wrong their end, or if you need to adjust any settings following the
ISP change.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding, but this is not the ISP's e-mail. As far as
I know, I have never even had an e-mail address with them. This is a
cellular broadband service provider. My Internet is provided via a USB data
stick. The e-mail I am trying to send in via my permanent e-mail account on
my own domain, featherschneider.com, which I own. The server is operated my
my web hosting company, not my ISP. And my webmail (again, via my hosting
company, not the ISP) works just fine.

I truly don't understand how the cellular company could affect my e-mail
account. If you could explain it in "for dummies" language, that would be
great. In any case, there is no support at this time. Their Web site has
only a support form and they are not answering calls or e-mails or
returning messages. Thousands of people have nonworking phones and/or no
Internet access. It's a huge mess. You can see for yourself by Googling
"Element Mobile" or visiting their web site. They have no clue what's going
on.

Not sure which one you mean. I tried checking/unchecking both checkboxes,
top and bottom, all permutations. Tried "Use specific settings" and entered
my exact same e-mail password. Didn't try "Require secure authentication,"
but if regular authentication isn't working, I don't see how this could

The only change that has occurred is this (And I just realized that the
first problem message came after this happened): My broadband cellular
Internet provider changed hands Saturday morning at midnight, and at that
point about 80,000 cell phone/Internet customers lost service. My data
stick stopped working, and I got a loaner on Sunday afternoon. A tech did
come here to set it up, but to the best of my knowledge he did not mess
with my e-mail settings; I was present while he worked, and he never asked
me for e-mail settings. (I own my own domain, featherschneider.com.)
Customer service is still not available (hence 80,000 unhappy customers),
so I can't go there for help. I have, however, gotten out of my contract
and will keep this loaner card on the old network until I can sign up with
a new provider on Friday. Perhaps I should wait until that conversion is
complete and see if the problem remains.

However, the webmail on my domain works just fine. And The Bat receives
mail normally.

Can't connect with TLS but error message seems wrong

2010-12-23 Thread Robin Anson
Batfolk,

I have an account that requires I connect to the POP server using TLS
to the dedicated port (995). It has been working fine for a long time,
but suddenly it won't connect and I get an error message that the
certificate has expired.

However, the account log shows the following:

 12/23/2010, 11:46:28: FETCH - receiving mail messages
 12/23/2010, 11:46:28: FETCH - Initiating TLS handshake

!12/23/2010, 11:46:29: FETCH - TLS handshake failure. Invalid server
certificate (This certificate has expired).

which makes it appear that the certificate is still valid.

Needless to say people using Outlook can connect without problems, and
I set up Thunderbird and it connects. I merely had to accept that it
was a self-signed certificate (so the root was not trusted
automatically).

The people that run the server cannot see a problem.

My laptop clock is correct.

The only possible (long shot) source of a problem is that about the
time I started experiencing this problem I had updated AVG Free to the
latest version. At the time the problem started I was using AVG's
proxy servers, but even going directly to the POP server the problem
remains.

Has anyone else experienced this?
Does anyone have any ideas of how to get more information about the
problems?

Actually, there might be - try enabling SMTP authentication, many ISPs
allow you to send the message then.

Alas no combination of tics at ACCOUNT>PROPERTIES>SEND MAIL(Authentication)

The message is pretty clear that the server will not accept traffic from an
IP that's not assigned to Charter, so if the motel uses some other ISP,
there's no way to get around it. If sending an Email is urgent, you might
try using a webmail interface instead of TB -- or opening a gmail or other

I use Comodo as a firewall only. It is intrusive, always asking you

Interesting. Is Vipre also a firewall? I've never heard of it. I
used to run ZoneAlarm for a firewall and free AVG for an anti-virus
but since I built this computer I was never able to get ZoneAlarm to
work properly. In looking around for a replacement for ZoneAlarm I
stumbled across Comodo. Since it has an anti-virus built-in, I never
installed free AVG. I don't really like Comodo, it's too intrusive
although that probably could be tempered if I took the time to learn
how to configure it properly.

On a different topic - I used Comodo for quite a while. Is a memory pig and had
some odd behaviors, though my recall is fuzzy. Moved to Vipre months ago. Am
quite satisfied with its features and performance. Vipre integrates well with
the Bat! for anti-virus.

"PostMessage to NULL handle, Msg = 3021, wParam = 0, |Param=0" showed
up on start-up of TB! today.
Like you I didn't get the error message when I closed and started TB! again.

Today's lines of ex_log.txt are:
v4.2.36.4 BAILAMOS/Hyd 12-08-2010 10:30:21 ABCGrid:6 EAddrBookDuplicate
Duplicate handle

v4.2.36.4 BAILAMOS/Hyd 12-08-2010 10:39:31 ABCGrid:6 EAddrBookDuplicate
Duplicate handle

And no, "PostMessage to NULL handle, Msg = 3021, wParam = 0, |Param
=0" is not present in ex_log.txt for today.

"EAddrBookDuplicate" is a regular occurrence in the log (so I should maybe look
into that) but the error message is new.
I have this, though:
v4.2.36.4 BAILAMOS/Hyd 22-06-2010 14:08:34 Finder:Searching
\\catch-...@hyd.dk\e-zines\biozonen EPostMessageZeroHandle PostMessage to NULL
handle, Msg = 3039, wParam = 3, lParam = 13
...and two similar ones, both containing "Finder:Searching".

Any solutions or good advice?

No, I have 21 GB of free space on the system drive and 51 GB of free space
on my data drive.

> Have you 'cleaned' your 'temp' folder recently?

It gets cleaned at boot up, so there is not much accumulating in it.
Furthermore if I reboot TB! the problem goes away and that doesn't change
the temp folder.

It seems more like a memory leak or some sort of internal space problem, but
TB! doesn't seem to be using a lot of memory (at least not based on the
Windows Task Manager Mem Usage figure.

If you aren't real sure about how to "clean up" try this utility
http://www.stevengould.org/index.php?Itemid=70&id=28&option=com_content&task=view
Download menu is on the left and it's free. Run it in demo mode first
to see how much you will be cleaning up. It will warn you if you run
it with a browser open but you can do that with no problems. It
suggests logging off at the end - you don't need to do that unless
privacy is a big issue as that only cleans the last couple of files.

Next Make sure you have cleaned up within the Bat and RUN THE
MAINTENANCE CENTER!! That will fix folders and compress them.

Next START / RUN chkdsk - note how many errors. if there are a
gazillion you are facing serious hardware problems. if none or just
3-4 the do START / RUN CHKDSK /F
The /F paramater will fix the issues. Go to supper as this will take a
while.

Next Optimize the drive. If you don't have anything else use the built
in windows defragmenter. Take a coffee break. It will take a while

The next thing is to open more virtual memory but get this far first

It means that you should try it again. It looks like the communication
with the server went out of sync.
Was it a large attachment?

I've recently seen the same error message. But for me it was a bad

timed out in the middle of my sending a large email. Two hours later
the connection was clear again and I resent the message without a

TB expects the number 354 in front of that text. The server probably
gives that signal, since it wouldn't work any other way with any other
client. The fact that you don't always get those signals point to the
possiblities of you having a bad connection with your ISP or that
you're running an smtp proxy that's a tad out of sync with the
servers.

Error message List index out of bound

2004-07-08 Thread cs4l
Hello,

Using TB 2.10.03, XP

I have an error message "List index out of bound(1)"
when I scroll through the message list with the vertical arrows.
This is not systematic, but at least once a day.
The message appears only once, but then the icons that show the attached files
disappear in the small window at the left of the message text.
I know there is something attached because the left window exists.
I can select the attachement with the mouse but I do it completely blind since
nothing shows on the screen.
If I open the message in a separate window, then the attachement show correctly
in the left window.

Is this a known bug? I looked in the archives but could not find anything.

I can see when reading my own message sent to the list that the links are indeed
clickable. So, go figure. I received email from a correspondent that said the links
were not clickable, I cannot see that they are clickable when I am creating the
message, and yet they show perfectly normal when reading the list...

U> Maybe it's a wrapping thing. Have you tried to shorten it trough
U> something like http://www.makeashorterlink.com ?

No. I didn't mean needing to shorten the link. The wrapping I meant was that of the
lines of text. They are wrapped to the window in html pages so if you resize the
window the text fills the available space. Shortening the link was not the problem for
me (this time, anyway!) but thank you for that web page. 8-)

The issue seemed to be my typing in or cutpasting a link where moving the cursor over
it did not show it as a live link, athough it began with the http... nor did it show
as blue which color links are in my defaults.

For this email I have changed to the Plain Text editor (Windows proportional). I am
going to type an address for the first example, then paste a copied address to show
you what I mean.

Here is a typed-in address:
http://www.swan.ac.uk/classics/staff/ter/grst/big.htm

Here is a copy and pasted address:
http://anzwers.org/free/universe/

On my screen these links do not show as live/clickable. As I mentioned, the Message
Format is Plain Text Windows. If I were in the HTML Editor I would have copied the
link, then pasted it into the Add Hyperlink button on the toolbar or simply typed it
in to the special window Fm_UrlLink (what an interesting name, what could it mean?)
There is no button bar in Plain Text Windows. Under the Edit Mail Message window, in
the Edit dropdown, they maybe could put in a Paste As Hyperlink...

So the unsolved question of how do I make the links clickable, is one reason I'm back
to MicroEd. The other reason is the textwrapping Allie told me about.

It would be great to see some discussion in The Bat! Help about the 'consequences'
(for lack of a better word seniormoment) of using the different settings in the
Options|Preferences|Editor/Viewer and perhaps even some hints for the untutored about
not using the html editor when sending messages to mailing lists.

This original thread talked about the Help error message. If RitLabs is still updating
the help, now might be a good window of opportunity for them to include this. 8-)

You can't. In a plain text message the links just "are", there's no need
to indicate that it's a link. In HTML, on the other hand, you have to
say that what you mean to be a link really is a link.

> That's where my unclickable links were showing. I 'spoke' to Allie

Your link showed fine here, and the only way I could manage to make it
unshowable was to use the HTML-editor and send a non-linked URL. So I am
as baffled as anyone else as to the reason why it acts as it does.

I too have settled on MicroEd because it it "mostly" what you see is
what everybody gets with a few exceptions. Being the lowest common
denominator among editors in TB! can be a plus.

In the Edit Mail Message Window, there is a row of icons; select font
and size and such thing. (If you don't see it, make sure you are in the
