Thanks Jernej!

I've looked at the Editor/Viewer options a million times and must've skipped
over HTML Viewer. Once I disabled that everything fell into place, including
how my adding attachments.

As for changing the email address of this list, it was right where you said it
would be - thanks very much for the link.

Appreciate the help.

(Sort of) New User Questions

2022-06-09 Thread Fred Weissman

After many (many!) years of using v2, I finally ungraded to v10. Needless to
say, there have been a few changes, most of which I have figured out. Here are
a couple with which I need help.

1- I'm  a plain-text person, not HTML. I will use it for email when absolutely
necessary. I want my new messages -and- my replies to be in plain-text. Where
and what are the proper settings to make this the default no matter what format
the reply is?

2- Perhaps related to #1, when I add an attachment to a new message or a reply,
it becomes part of the body of the message. In v2 I was to have attachments as
icons in a pane to the left of the message editor. Again, how can I make this
the default?

3- In regards to this mailing list (TBUDL) how can I change my email address? I
signed up with one address, but am now needing to change to another.

Thanks.

Deleting is tricky. To the far right of each line there are 3 boxes. Select the
leftmost one an the list will drop down. Anu clicks or keys will close it

2016-04-14 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
First question:

When addressing, clicking a blank area in one of the windows (To: CC:
BCC: and Subject:), a little pick-list appears. It seems that these
suggestions come from both the address book and from e-mails received
(maybe even sent) Very convenient until
one of these people has changed his/her e-mail address. The
suggestions from the address book appear with the new (i.e., changed)
e-mail address. However, the other appear as well. Chance of picking
the wrong suggested addressee. How can I delete the unwanted addresses
from the pick-list?

Second question:

When sending a group e-mail, is it possible to omit one of the
addressees on an ad-hoc basis. Let's say that I remind this group of
our weekly meeting. Next week, at the weekly meeting, we plan a
surprise birthday party for one of the people. When I write about this
event to the group, clearly, I do not want to tip off the celebrant.
How do I sent mail to the group but omitting one person?

RT You can put it into C:\Users\Public\Documents or create a new

RT the backup :-)

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! It is up and running and
working fine in 2 accounts. The only issue I have found is that you
shoulc NOT close it in one account as it compresses the database and
creates odd results for the other user - which is easily remedied by
having them shut down the program and restart it

Thanks again for the tips!

(This suggestion comes from my experience with Win7, so I don't know
what the directory structure looks like for Win8, but I'm thinking you
can probably find the proper analogs.)

I think the important detail has to do with where you put the mail
folder in the filesystem. If you put it in an %APPDATA% directory or in
a Documents directory (under one of the user accounts) then the other
user won't be able to access that directory. Therefore, you will
probably have to put the mail folder at the filesystem root or in some
directory that is outside the /Users directory and not in /Program Files
(x86) or any other access protected directory.

Sad, isn't it, to require a third party fix right out of the box
just to maintain some basic functionality that we've come to
appreciate? Since my only touch screen devices run Android, I
certainly don't need the extra bloat--and potential resultant
issues--associated with the Windows 8 all-in-one approach.

Also, currently the upgrade to Win8 Pro costs 30€, while upgrade to
 Windows 7 is around 200€.

Depends on where you are, who you know, how much patience you have, or
how lucky you can be. Here in the US, even the full retail price
wouldn't come close to 200€ ($200 USD, at most).

My main laptop came with Windows 7 installed, but my two new (used,
but new to me) little netbooks needed new OSs after I installed new
hard drives in them. I got a legitimate copy of Windows 7 for $45 USD
(unused, on Craigslist - someone got it as a gift, but didn't need
it). There was even someone (a computer tech) selling a System
Builder DVD for the same price (these contain all versions of Windows
7, both 32 and 64 bit - with pre-programmed license activation) for
the same price. Not being an official system builder myself, I did
feel a bit awkward about that, so I just went with the plain Jane
copy of Home Premium. Good enough for my purposes.

Microsoft still has to support Windows 7 for several years to come,
and since I've had a really good experience with this version, I see
no point in messing about with a pre-SP1 Windows 8.

To each our own. :)

Hi Folks,

Greetings.

I had a little questions that I asked on the Bits Du Jour site, some
got answered, these still are kicking around.

#1
can we paste pictures right into TheBat! editor ?
(Abbyy Screenshot Reader will send a pic to the clipboard, then I
paste them in, jpeg or png is fine).

#2
While there are five filter types, nothing really corresponds to
Manual in Eudora. I like to use a two-stage filtering system, and
manual takes the whole keboodle from stage 1 to state 2 (some read,
some unread). Do you have a way to accomplish this in TheBat!
? That is .. coming in I put 20 forums into one box, then I want
them to go home to rest on a later manual filter.

the .tbb file structure, is it one big disk file (like Outlook and

Thanks

Note: this forum would be easier to use if the mail had something

While there are five filter types, nothing really corresponds to
Manual in Eudora. I like to use a two-stage filtering system, and
manual takes the whole keboodle from stage 1 to state 2 (some read,
some unread). Do you have a way to accomplish this in TheBat!
? That is .. coming in I put 20 forums into one box, then I want
them to go home to rest on a later manual filter.

Create 2 filters and make the second one manual (am I understanding
you correctly?)

Each mailbox has it's own files and generally corresponds in structure

AFAIK yes, if message format you are writing is HTML.

Any filter can be set for manual execution only.

The structure on disk replicates your account and folder structure, and

During initial installation, I just wanted an easy place (easy for me

Migrating to a new computer - a few questions...

2011-11-09 Thread Melissa Reese
Hi,

Tonight, I'll be migrating from this old Win XP (32 bit) desktop
computer to a new Win 7 (64 bit) laptop. In order to make this as
painless as possible, I hope I can get a few questions answered before
I leap...

I've never yet used the restore from backup function in the Bat, so
this will be a new experience for me. As I try to understand it,
here's what I'm planning on doing...

1. Install a fresh copy of Bat (v4.2.44.2) on the new machine, and
input my registration code.

2. Restore from saved copy of backup (will have this saved on an
external drive)

3. Replace default Mail folder with copy of current Mail folder
(it's nearly 2 GB)

4. Install a new copy of TrueCrypt, move Mail folder into new
TrueCrypt volume in a new location, then set appropriate new Mail
file location within Bat preferences.

I'm hoping this process will yield a perfectly functional clone of
my current Bat setup.

Does all this seem reasonable, so far?

Are there any specific issues/problems I should be aware of in moving
my Bat installation from this Win XP machine to my new Win 7 machine?

Then...

I've been using K9 SPAM filtering for many years now. Will this older
program still work on a Win 7 64 bit machine?

Thanks for any and all comments, recommendations, etc. that you might
be able to offer!

Re: Old files, file extension questions

2011-08-10 Thread Abigail Marshall
Follow up new problem/issue.

AM *2. Mail Folders: .BCK, .BK0, .BK1, IBO, IB1*
AM My individual mail folders have a lot of OLD files (at least +1 year)
 that
AM have extensions that look like the above. usually named something like
 AM MESSAGES.BCK
I get the .BCK files when I try to back-up or compress folders and
there is some problem. Next time the file extension increases to .BK0,
then .BK1, then .BK2 and so on. You can recover messages from there,
but I usually decide that I don't miss any messages, so I delete these
 files.
I have never seen .IB0 or .IB1 files.

1. I went ahead and deleted everything that looked like a backup -- it's
possible that some of the odd extensions (like IBO) were created by some
other backup or virus protection program a long the way... but the main
thing was all those files were at least a year old, so whatever they are, I
don't need them now.

AM *1. Attachment Folder, *.msg extensions*
*.msg should be messages that were attached to emails. You can
double-click on them and then they will open in TB!. So you can decide
whether you want to keep them.

2. I did figure out how to read them. I didn't want to open them up in TB
because I wanted the program to be closed while I was doing the cleanup, but
I found another utility that made it easy to drag drop read.

I delete the Cache and the imgfiles folder several time a day. I view
a lot of graphics and things can get out of control quickly. I have a
batch file to do it on the fly, but it is part of my Ccleaner routine
 too

3. Once I deleted the contents of the cache file it didn't come back, and
all of the files in the cache were pretty old, so I'm guessing that it might
not be used with version 5. Nothing at all is in the imgfiles directory
other than two empty files called FilesDB.info and FilesDB.info__

Maybe that has something to do with my settings.

4. Now for the new/different problem or bug.

I have always had TheBat configured to save all attachments to a separate
folder (rather than the body of messages). I was housecleaning because the
attachments folder seemed to have grown extremely large. I discovered to
my dismay when doing the cleaning that TheBat had created multiple copies
many of the attachments, generally with names following this pattern:
 filename.ext, filename1.ext, filename2.ext -- and I could see that recent
copies of the documents seemed to correspond with the date/time that
scheduled backups are run on my system. This happened with many, but not
all, attachments. Sometimes there were as many as 60 copies of the same
file. Obviously a problem when it is a large file to start with, but even
with small files is all adds up.

I SUSPECT that this may be tied to parked emails. I've always known that
TheBat has the annoying tendency to make extra copies of parked emails from
time to time, but it didn't occur to me that it might be replicating the
attachments as well.

Since the time of the duplication seems to also correlate with automated
backup, I've decided to stop backing up the attachments folder. (I have
alternate backup in place for that, so that would be easy enough to restore
if needed).

But I wanted to raise this as this is definitely an issue that could impact
performance for others - so it is something to watch out for. I had noticed
that the routine backups were starting to take very long to complete -- now
I have an idea what was going on, though I still don't know why it happened.

Old files, file extension questions

2011-08-09 Thread Abigail Marshall
I'm running TB Home Edition 5.0.20.1 and as I have been using TB for many
years, there seem to be a lot of old stuff accumulated that is taking up
space and so I'm doing some housecleaning -- but I'm not sure what is safe
to delete and what isn't. So I have these questions:

*1. Attachment Folder, *.msg extensions*

TB is configured to store all attachments in a single folder. As
attachments take a lot of room, it makes sense for me to go through the
folder and either move important files that I need to keep to another part
of my computer, and delete other stuff I don't need, especially for older
stuff. Attachments can be very large files that take up a lot of room, and
they are hard to find within the mail program after a few weeks or months
have gone by. In other words:

Pictures of my grandson: (move from attachments to /pictures/grandson
directory -- easier to find that way anyway)

Funny joke cat pictures mailed the senders 300 closest friends: delete.
 forever. goodbye.

But I see a lot of files in the attachments folder that have the extension
*.msg - *I don't know what those are and whether they are needed or not.
Are they just superfluous attachments that come from outlook users? or will
deleting the .msg file also mean that I have deleted the content of the
email that it was initially attached to as well? (In which case maybe I
need to back up before deleting?)

*2. Mail Folders: .BCK, .BK0, .BK1, IBO, IB1*
*
*
My individual mail folders have a lot of OLD files (at least +1 year) that
have extensions that look like the above. usually named something like
MESSAGES.BCK

Am I correct in assuming that these are all backups of one sort or another,
and that the ONLY files I need in each folder are:
MESSAGES.TBB and
MESSAGES.TBN

I'm thinking that I could probably get rid of a lot of unneeded stuff, and
likely speed up my mail handling if I just got rid of these older files.

Anyway, I'd appreciate it if anyone would let me know if there is a reason
NOT to delete the above files. Keep in mind that I am talking about files
that show last modified that are at least a year old.

Thanks,

Abigail

Re: Old files, file extension questions (Cache Matter :))

2011-08-09 Thread RS (FEDARA)
Hi Rick,

Am I assuming correctly that the files in TheBat cache are unnecessary
(except for those currently in use)?

In other words, safe to delete all files from cache as part of regular
 maintenance?

I delete the Cache and the imgfiles folder several time a day. I view
a lot of graphics and things can get out of control quickly. I have a
batch file to do it on the fly, but it is part of my Ccleaner routine
 too

I wish to have an option to save a cache with a TBK backup file :)
And an option in Message Maintenance to clean cached files for
messages that were removed would be a nice feature :)

I don't know why but it's getting longer on TB! (even up to 1 minute)
than on Thunderbird (3-15 seconds mostly) to get external link
pictures in the messages downloaded.

Not mentioning that due to the fact that I live in Shanghai sometimes
the links embedded in the message are not possible to be downloaded
from some foreign servers (with a high ping and sometimes Time Out up
to 50%) - service quality I know, so I do not complain here just
dreaming at the moment :)

I'm on DianXin, biggest Internet provider in China and as it always is
with biggest service they give you sucks... unfortunately I can't have
installed any other.

Just if anyone in China wonders if to install WanTong - I had it
before I moved to new apartment and it was 'flying'.

I see. I used Voyager only as a crutch when travelling, as Thailand's

Well, since I believe that OTFE stands for On The Fly Encription I
imagine that whole files are not decrypted, but instead TB has a sort of
builtin driver to access the mail database while only decrypting and
encrypting a buffer at a time.

New to The Bat!: Questions I can't find answers to

2009-12-08 Thread Amy J. Schneider
Greetings, all --

Longtime Eudora user here who had Eudora crash on her one too many
times and finally decided to take the leap to a new client that's
still being supported. I've spent some time playing with settings and
got a lot of my issues tamed. But I still have a few outstanding. Can
you help, or point me to where to look?

(using The Bat! v.4.2.12.4 on Win XP SP 3)

(1) Is there any way to replicate the Eudora method of having
double-clicked messages open in the same pane as the message list
(that is, not a separate window)? I don't like using the preview pane
because of spam avoidance (both HTML bugs and just having to see the
stupid things at all), but those extra taskbar buttons for each
message really take up a lot of space.

(2) Speaking of spam . . . am I really stuck with having to purchase
an extra plug-in in order to get the same junk filtering that Eudora
provided as part of the package? (Or are there freebies that I'm not
seeing?)

(3) I'm also strongly used to keeping messages in ascending order, and
Eudora would always open a message list with the last (newest) message
visible at the bottom. The Bat! is making me scroll down every time,
and I can't figure out how to change this. Am I doomed to force myself
to get used to using descending order (which I hate as much as top
posting)?

I think that's all for now. Thanks much for any light you can shed.

Over here TB places the cursor at the last message in the list that I
opened, whether it's on top of the message list, at the bottom or
somewhere in between. That might be related to the fact that I read my
messages in the preview pane.
Apart from that it's easy to find the first unread message by pressing
Ctrl-Right.

The Bat! opens a new window viewing the folder containing the message
you have double-clicked, not just the message. You can show or hide
the message list in that window via its view menu.

I don't like using the preview pane because of spam
avoidance (both HTML bugs and just having to see the
stupid things at all), but those extra taskbar buttons
for each message really take up a lot of space.

Linked images (HTML bugs included, obviously) will only be displayed
in TB! if you specifically tell it to, either on an image-by-image
basis or by whitelisting a domain. But why not just view everything in
plain text?

 (2) Speaking of spam . . . am I really stuck with
having to purchase an extra plug-in in order to get
the same junk filtering that Eudora provided as part
of the package? (Or are there freebies that I'm not
 seeing?)

I believe some contributors to this list use free spam filters. I find
that care with who I give my address to, coupled with appropriate use of
disposable email addresses, keeps it down to maybe a dozen spam messages
a week out of about 800 received.

 (3) I'm also strongly used to keeping messages in
ascending order, and Eudora would always open a message
list with the last (newest) message visible at the
bottom. The Bat! is making me scroll down every time,

In the main window, go to View | Message List Columns and set the
order and threading that suits you best. I don't understand why TB! is
causing you to have to scroll down every time, as it has always opened
my folders with focus on the last message I viewed in that folder.

I think that's all for now. Thanks much for any light
 you can shed.

Connectivity pack questions

2009-02-16 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Fellow listers,

Apparently I'm missing something about the archives
(http://mail.eberl.com/cgi-bin/mailman/private/hplx/ or I'm going to
the wrong place. There doesn't seem to be any search function.

I'm looking for help in getting my computer to communicate with my

(looks like the 200LX screen). I have my LX connected to the serial
port on my computer (WinXP Pro) but the computer won't see the LX or
vice-versa.

At end of the Cpack software installation, the Cpack installer asks if
I want the installer to search for the serial port on the computer. I
answer yes and I get a message which says it can't find COM2 (or
words to that effect).

The LX is plugged into the DB9 port on the rear of my computer which I
assume is COM1. I'm confused. Do I need to get a USB-to-serial cable
(if there is such a thing) and connect the LX to a USB port?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

What is the point of parking messages if you park them all? To me the
whole notion of parking a message is to make it impossible to delete.
Why one should be able to delete a parked message by moving it flies
in the face of the whole notion. I can't drive to the mall and have
my car be parked at the same time. My messages used to get organized
by filters, and be where I wanted them. Now with IMAP they get
organized before they ever hit my machine. Once they are where I want
them, if they are important enough, I might park them. But if I had
50,000 or so parked messages, parking wouldn't mean much any more.

Put differently, if everything was 'parked' how would I recognize the
messages which were important enough to park?

Q2: When i have a parked message and i want to move it manually to

way to have it kept parked? Or do i need to create some filter for

Is it so? I don't know. Does Parking only mean to keep one from
deleting a message or does it mean to keep one from deleting *and*
moving a message? Why should I not move parked messages and keep the
Parked flag?

I would think the work around would be to unpark it.

This is the status quo when moving a parked message and confirming

I bet it is working as designed, but I am not convinced that the

Filter questions

2008-02-03 Thread REZK945
Hi group,
I want to create a filter rule which does the following:
Every not-gpg-signed email will get an automatic generated answer.

Exceptions:
- some guys from my contacts can be left out because they use bloody
webmailer anyway which makes it harder for them to install and use GPG
(they are not very familiar with computers). I think those guys have
to be added manually which is what I have already done. Maybe a group
could be a better solution?

- Newsletter etc. - I try to capture them by looking at the topic
newsticker and newsletter. But I am not sure whether I get all of
them.

- Amazon, ebay etc - IIRC they do not send information emails with
newsletter topic. How can I get them?

- Some other mass mails with more than say 5 recipants. Any chance to
capture them?

Maybe there are some more exceptions, but I hope to identify them
soon.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hello REZK945,

I want to create a filter rule which does the following:
Every not-gpg-signed email will get an automatic generated answer.

I'm not familiar with gpg or pgp, etc., but I assume there must be
something unique to those messages. An specific header field, or textt
within the body.

Let's assume the uniqueness is -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- in
the body. You would need a filter with condition:

Text .does not contain. -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

and with Action 'Send automatic reply'.

For my explanations below, lets call this filter 'GPG Filter'

 Exceptions:

My suggestion would be to NOT include exceptions in the same filter
with .AND NOT. conditions, but to set up a separate filter for each
exception. Much more clear and easier to manage. Your filter structure
should be:

  Exception 1
  Exception 2
  ...
  GPG Filter

For this structure to work, nonre of the filter should have the
'Continue processing with other filters' option selected.

 - some guys from my contacts can be left out because they use bloody
webmailer anyway which makes it harder for them to install and use GPG
(they are not very familiar with computers). I think those guys have
to be added manually which is what I have already done. Maybe a group
 could be a better solution?

Yes, I thing using an AB Groups is a much better idea.

Exception 1 Filter
Address groups groupname contains sender

 - Newsletter etc. - I try to capture them by looking at the topic
newsticker and newsletter. But I am not sure whether I get all of
 them.

Exception 2 filter
Subject contains newsticker .OR. Sublect contains newsletter

 - Amazon, ebay etc - IIRC they do not send information emails with
newsletter topic. How can I get them?

This would be your 'Exception 3' filter, and you must look for
something unique in those messages. Perhaps the domain of the sender?.
If so:

Exception 3 filter
Header field From: contains @amazon.com
.OR.
Header field From: contains @ebay.com

 - Some other mass mails with more than say 5 recipants. Any chance to
 capture them?

Maybe with something like:

Recipient match RegExp

But I am not at all familiar with Regular Expressions to suggest one.
Sorry.

Maybe there are some more exceptions, but I hope to identify them
 soon.

Just add a new filter before the GPG one.

 Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hope mine are of some help.

Any easy way to move (or copy) a whole bunch of filters from one

BTW, am I to understand that a common filter will apply to all

The filters are stored in the account.srb file (account.erb for OTFE)
in the account directory. (Mail directory for common filters) Closing
TB and copying/moving the file to the new location used to work during
the early stages of v3, but it hasn't been discussed on list for quite
a long now, so that might have been changed. Create a backup and try
it.
Note that this means that your old filters in the target account will

I don't use common filters myself, two of my three accounts are merely

That should be an encrypted common folder.
Every account should have its own directory (with the unencrypted name
of the account) and every account based folder should have its own
directory with an encrypted name.

JP Another question (if I may...)

JP How do I stop folders in a mail account picking up the macros of that

By creating a folder template that differs from the account template.

JP For instance the Bat! folder is in my Rivernet mail account, and
JP Bat! needs separate macros (Mail account is set up as if mail is
JP coming (by a macro) form the work mail account). However the Bat
JP folder keeps inserting the Rivernet macros, even though I keep
JP deleting them in the Bat folder.

Actually emptying a folder template means to TB that you want to use
the account template for that folder.
For your Bat folder the solution is easier. Create an AB template for
this list (both a new message template and a reply template) and it
won't matter where you are while creating a message to the list, AB
templates have preference over Account and folder templates.

JP Make sense as explained?

Yep.

Normally on your harddisk. ;-) You can also store it on a remote
drive, for example on the LAN, though.

For the standard location, find the The Bat! directory. The location
depends on your Windows, but I believe it is at %APPDATA%. The message
base is the file TheBat\Mail\FolderName\messages.tbb. If you cannot
locate it, search for messages.tbb on your C:-drive.

Depends a bit on the version you used when first installing TB.
v1 preferred c:\program files\the bat!\mail or something like that
v3 uses c:\documents and settings\user\application data\the bat!\

Filter Questions

2007-04-25 Thread Tom

Hello Everyone,

I would like to set up a filter to copy all incoming emails arriving
in a specific account to a new folder or ideally virtual folder
provided the sender's email is already in the original folder (ie.
use the filter to notify me that an incoming email is from a known
source as opposed to be a brand-new sender). Is this possible?

Also, when I fiddled with the folders, I set up a virtual folder
linked to the original folder. This now shows all the emails from the
original as I had not yet set up any filter. How can I get rid of it
now. I am afraid deleting it will delete all original emails too,
something I don't want to do?

Yes, it is possible in several ways.

Perhaps the easiest and most straight forward way would be that you add
your 'known sources' to the address book. Then, you can make Active the
Known Incoming filter that is included by default by TB in the Sorting
Office when an account is created. This way, messages from 'known
sources' will be moved to Inbox-Known folder and the rest will just stay
in normal Inbox.

If you want to keep messages from 'known sources' in a separate folder
for each, you can modify the action in Known filter and use the
%FromName or %ABFromName macros for the folder name instead of
'Inbox-Known'.

Also, when I fiddled with the folders, I set up a virtual folder
linked to the original folder. This now shows all the emails from the

NO problem. If you delete a Virtual Folder the messages that were
_shown_ (not stored) in it will stay in whatever real folder they were
actually in.

sorry, I was not clear enough - the incoming emails usually are not from
known sources the first time. These are orders from customers. The
majority will be new customers and new emails but over time some will
be returning customers. These I would like to catch and review once
they come in. However there is no need to filter them in individual
folders. The trick with the address book won't work as I don't want to
add each sender to the address book on the off chance that they may
order multiple times.
