 Subject: Health Search site

 A healthy search site
Every day we use the Internet to search for information. It puts more
data
at our fingertips than we could ever find before.

We couldn’t possibly read everything on the Web. So we rely on search
sites
 to provide information that’s relevant.

Unfortunately, generic search sites don’t always return the best results.
That’s when specialized sites come in handy.

Take Medstory, for example. It is dedicated to searching for information
on
health and medicine. It works a lot like Google.

Just enter your search phrase. Then, you’ll get a list of results. You’ll
also see lists of related topics. These topics help you narrow your
search
and get focused results. Talk about smart!

Doing many things at the same time can be difficult. But can it kill you?
Tune in to tomorrow's Kim Komando Digital Minute to find out. You may
want
to heed a warning from experts! To find the radio station nearest you
that
broadcasts my Minute, use the map on my site. If there isn't one near

Acorda Therapeutics and FDA informed healthcare professionals of changes
to the CONTRAINDICATIONS and WARNINGS Sections of the product labeling
for Zanaflex, a drug used to treat spasticity, In pharmacokinetic
studies where tizanidine was coadministered with either fluvoxamine or
ciprofloxacin (CYP1A2 inhibitors), the serum concentration of tizanidine
was significantly increased and potentiated its hypotensive and sedative
effects. Although there are no clinical studies evaluating the effects
of other CYP1A2 inhibitors on tizanidine, coadministration of tizanidine
with other CYP1A2 inhibitors (zileuton, other fluroquinolones,
antiarrythmics, cimetidine, famotidine, oral contraceptives, acyclovir

treatment of women with irritable bowel syndrome with constipation and
for patients younger than 65 years of age with chronic constipation. FDA
analysis of safety data pooled from 29 clinical trials involving over

New Studies Showed That Some Patients With Parkinson's Disease on Drug Had
Serious Damage To Their Heart Valves

MedWatch - The FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program

FDA notified healthcare professionals and patients that companies that
manufacture and distribute pergolide have agreed to withdraw the drug
from the market. Pergolide is a dopamine agonist (DA) used with
levodopa and carbidopa to manage the signs and symptoms of Parkinson's
disease. Results of two new studies showed that some patients with
Parkinson's disease treated with pergolide had serious damage to their
heart valves when compared to patients who did not receive the drug.
These two studies confirm earlier studies that also described this
problem. Patients currently taking pergolide should contact their
healthcare professional about alternate treatments and not abruptly stop
taking their medication. Healthcare professions should assess their
patient's need for DA therapy. If continued treatment with a DA is
needed, another DA should be substituted for pergolide.

I have new symptoms as well and worry about them greatly, but I believe that so
little is known about paraplegism that most Dr.'s and even Neuro's don't know
how to deal with them.

I have been calling my doctor since last week for an answer and the answer is
always the same, Doctor has not come to a conclusion yet. We are waiting for
the lab work to come back.

I've not heard of this butterfly symptom in the four years I have been on the
List, and yet here it is, mentioned twice in one set of emails. I wonder if
there is anything new going on in the world.

Is there anyone out there who is already paralyzed who feels like they are
being paralyzed all over again beginning at the toes and traveling all the way
up to the original ending spot? My original site stopped at T3 and fortunately
did not affect my arms except for some slight tremor, but this time it feels
like my arms are going to be paralyzed too.

Please email me or the list if you have been through this.

Takeda and FDA notified healthcare professionals of recent safety data
concerning pioglitazone-containing products. The results of an analysis
of the manufacturer's clinical trial database of pioglitazone showed
more reports of fractures in female patients taking pioglitazone than
those taking a comparator (either placebo or active). The majority of
fractures observed in female patients were in the distal upper limb
(forearm, hand and wrist) or distal lower limb (foot, ankle, fibula and
tibia). There were more than 8100 patients in the pioglitazone-treated
groups and over 7400 patients in the comparator-treated groups. The
duration of pioglitazone treatment was up to 3.5 years. Healthcare
professionals should consider the risk of fracture when initiating or
treating female patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with
 pioglitazone-containing products.

incidence of fractures in females noted in clinical trial

MedWatch - The FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program

Glaxo SmithKline (GSK) notified healthcare professionals of the results
of a randomized, double-blind parallel group study [ADOPT] of 4,360
patients with recently diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus followed for
4-6 years to compare glycemic control with rosiglitazone relative to
metformin and glyburide monotherapies. Significantly more female
patients who received rosiglitazone experienced fractures of the upper
arm, hand, or foot, than did female patients who received either
metformin or glyburide. At GSK's request, an independent safety
 committee reviewed an interim analysis of fractures in another large;
ongoing; controlled clinical trial and preliminary analysis was reported
as being consistent with the observations from ADOPT. Healthcare
professionals should consider the risk of fracture when initiating or
treating female patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with
 rosiglitazone.

escitalopram oxalate), Ativan (lorazepam)

MedWatch - The FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program

FDA informed consumers and healthcare professionals regarding the
possible dangers of buying prescription medications online. Individuals
who ordered Ambien, Xanax, Lexapro, and Ativan over the internet
received a product that contained haloperidol, a powerful anti-psychotic
drug. Several consumers experienced difficulty in breathing, muscle
spasms and muscle stiffness after ingesting the suspect product and had
to seek emergency medical treatment. Haloperiodol can cause muscle
stiffness, spasms, agitation and sedation. Taking medication that
contains an active ingredient other than what is prescribed by qualified
healthcare professionals is generally unsafe. FDA urges consumers to
review the FDA website for additional information prior to making
purchases of medications over the internet
 (http://www.fda.gov/buyonline/).

'Smart Bladder' Technology Could Help Paralyzed

Stimulating spinal cord can restore natural urination, animal study shows
-- Robert Preidt

FRIDAY, Feb. 16 (HealthDay News) -- Duke University researchers say they've
moved a step closer in their efforts to develop a smart bladder pacemaker
that could restore bladder control in people with spinal cord injury or
neurological diseases.
The latest finding of the project, which started in 2004, shows that electrical
stimulation of the pelvic nerve in the spinal cord can control the contraction
and relaxation of muscles involved in bladder control.
In tests on cats, the researchers found that high frequency electrical pulses
directed at the pelvic nerve helped empty the bladder, while low frequency
pulses increased bladder capacity and improved continence.
This method of manipulating the nervous system is a more flexible way of
controlling urinary function than direct bladder stimulation, said Warren Grill
of Duke's Pratt School of Engineering.
Stimulating the bladder directly can cause it only to contract, not to keep it
from contracting. We stimulate the sensory inputs in the spinal cord to
orchestrate either the inhibition or activation of urination, Grill said in a
prepared statement.
This illustrates an important principle: We can use the 'smarts' of the
nervous system to orchestrate control of complex functions, he said.
It may be possible to use a similar approach to stimulate spinal reflexes that
control movement to help people who are paralyzed, Grill said.
The research is expected to be presented Friday at the American Association for
the Advancement of Science annual meeting in San Francisco.

MedWatch - The FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program

FDA and Sanofi-Aventis notified healthcare professionals of revisions to
the prescribing information, including a BOXED WARNING and a new Patient
Medication Guide, for the antibiotic Ketek. Two of the three previously
approved indications, acute bacterial sinusitis and acute bacterial
exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, were removed from the prescribing
information because the balance of benefits and risks no longer support
approval of the drug for these indications. Ketek will remain on the
market for the treatment of community acquired pneumonia of mild to
moderate severity. In addition, warnings were strengthened for
hepatotoxicity (liver injury), loss of consciousness, and visual
disturbances. The BOXED WARNING states that Ketek is contraindicated in
patients with myasthenia gravis. The Patient Medication Guide, which
must be distributed to all patients, informs them about the risks of the
drug and how to use it safely.

HoMedics and FDA notified consumers and healthcare professionals of a
nationwide recall of 292,108 heating pads produced by HoMedics and
shipped within the United States in 2001 and 2002. Some of the heating
pads contain an inadequate connector crimp, which can lead to a high
resistance connection that may generate excessive heat. This can pose a
risk of minor or first degree burn injuries, fire or damage to the
heating pad itself or to materials (like bedding and furniture) that
come in contact with the pad. Consumers who have any of the heating pads
should discontinue use of the product and return it immediately to the
retailer of purchase for a full refund. See recall notice for specific

I’m new to this list and wanted to do a quick introduction. I am Anna Moses and
live in Little Rock, Arkansas. My daughter was ill with ADEM about 3 years ago
and is still recovering. She was up to the point of walking some with quad
canes, but had surgery for scoliosis in October and is back in the wheelchair
98% of the time. She seems to have lost the hope of walking and only tries to
walk when she goes to physical therapy. She seems to have a good attitude for
the most part, but just doesn’t seem to want to spend the time trying to walk.
She is 14 now and has the typical teenager attitudes. I get very frustrated
with her and with myself. I try to live my life with a good attitude, but
sometimes it all gets to me. My daughter’s illness has really affected our
whole family.

John’s story really touched me. You must have been really frightened when you
woke up and couldn’t walk. I remember that moment clearly with my daughter. She
had been to the hospital and had been diagnosed with spinal meningitis and sent
home after a short stay. She was sleeping with me since she was ill. She got up
early in the morning to go to the bathroom and couldn’t walk. I tried to help
her to the bathroom, but we both ended up on the floor. She looked at me and
said, “Mom, what’s happening to me?” My husband rushed her to the ER while I
got my son up and off to Grannie’s. She spent 10 days in ICU, most of it
unconscious and another 6 weeks in the hospital getting to the point where she
could feed herself and sit up in a wheelchair. She was on steroids, so didn’t
look like herself for several months. It was a scary time for her and for us.

Thanks to John and others for sharing their stories.

Are there any parents out there with children that have been ill with ADEM or
TM?

Subject: [TMIC] fine print and old eyes

When 11 point type is viewed on a big screen at maximum resolution,
it appears as very fine print. Namely, on my screen at this moment
is a note by an long-time TM'er; the 11 point body of his note
appears with the text, was, only .07 inches tall. My old eyes
cannot read that without glasses plus leaning forward to get near the
 screen.

There are two solutions: larger type or a lower resolution screen.
Changing the screen resolution is in conflict with my style of
computer usage. Changing the type size for each message received is
not worthwhile for mailing list messages.

I am sure that I am not alone with this problem.

So I would like to ask contributers to compose their messages with 14
point type or larger. This message, and others I create, is 14 point.

The admissions officer on duty might be nursing a grudge. Or a hangover.

Rachel Riskind of Austin, Tex., nonetheless has a good feeling about her
chances for admittance to the University of Michigan’s exclusive graduate
program in psychology, and it’s not just a matter of her qualifications.

On a recent afternoon, as she was working on the admissions application,
she went out for lunch with co-workers. Walking from the car to the
restaurant in a misting rain, she saw a woman stroll by with a Michigan
umbrella.

“I felt it was a sign; you almost never see Michigan stuff here,” said
Ms. Riskind, 22. “And I guess I think that has given me a kind of
confidence. Even if it’s a false confidence, I know that that in itself can
help people do well.”

Psychologists and anthropologists have typically turned to faith healers,
tribal cultures or New Age spiritualists to study the underpinnings of
belief in superstition or magical powers. Yet they could just as well have
examined their own neighbors, lab assistants or even some fellow
scientists. New research demonstrates that habits of so-called magical
thinking — the belief, for instance, that wishing harm on a loathed
colleague or relative might make him sick — are far more common than people
acknowledge.

These habits have little to do with religious faith, which is much more
complex because it involves large questions of morality, community and
history. But magical thinking underlies a vast, often unseen universe of
small rituals that accompany people through every waking hour of a day.

The appetite for such beliefs appears to be rooted in the circuitry of
the brain, and for good reason. The sense of having special powers buoys
people in threatening situations, and helps soothe everyday fears and ward
off mental distress. In excess, it can lead to compulsive or delusional
behavior. This emerging portrait of magical thinking helps explain why
people who fashion themselves skeptics cling to odd rituals that seem to
make no sense, and how apparently harmless superstition may become
disabling.

The brain seems to have networks that are specialized to produce an
explicit, magical explanation in some circumstances, said Pascal Boyer, a
professor of psychology and anthropology at Washington University in St.
Louis. In an e-mail message, he said such thinking was “only one domain
where a relevant interpretation that connects all the dots, so to speak, is
preferred to a rational one.”

Children exhibit a form of magical thinking by about 18 months, when they
begin to create imaginary worlds while playing. By age 3, most know the
difference between fantasy and reality, though they usually still believe
(with adult encouragement) in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. By age 8,
and sometimes earlier, they have mostly pruned away these beliefs, and the
line between magic and reality is about as clear to them as it is for
adults.

It is no coincidence, some social scientists believe, that youngsters
begin learning about faith around the time they begin to give up on
wishing. “The point at which the culture withdraws support for belief in
Santa and the Tooth Fairy is about the same time it introduces children to
prayer,” said Jacqueline Woolley, a professor of psychology at the
University of Texas. “The mechanism is already there, kids have already
spent time believing that wishing can make things come true, and they’re
just losing faith in the efficacy of that.”

If the tendency to think magically were no more than self-defeating
superstition, then over the pitiless history of human evolution it should
have all but disappeared in intellectually mature adults.

Yet in a series of experiments published last summer, psychologists at
Princeton and Harvard showed how easy it was to elicit magical thinking in
well-educated young adults. In one instance, the researchers had
participants watch a blindfolded person play an arcade basketball game, and
visualize success for the player. The game, unknown to the subjects, was
rigged: the shooter could see through the blindfold, had practiced
extensively and made most of the shots.

On questionnaires, the spectators said later that they had probably had
some role in the shooter’s success. A comparison

Hello to Jenna and the list,
I really hate reading all this crap being spilled about how this cannot work
for you or how you want to make money. I will tell the list how I feel and how
I have been doing and what is helping me.
I have been on the list since, 1999 and usually in the background these past
few years. After Doc died, I really had a hard time with some people on the
list and that was my problem, not anyone on the lists fault. Just some things I
had to get over.
I was struck with TM in July of 1998 and I have been a patient of Dr. Kerr’s
since 2000, when his practice began and he agrees 100% with my treatment plan
for me, not for everyone, but for me. I was on baclofen, neurontin, marinol,
etc. I think I have tried them all and the side effects from all of them made
me feel terrible. I am a very lucky lady with my progress and my lack of
progress. My TM hit at C2 and at T3 and T6. If you were to see me, I look
totally normal and am able to do so many things that even two years ago I
couldn’t. What do I do? Well, I don’t take any meds at all. I hate the nasty
feeling as I call it, but I prefer to feel that and function. Does smoking a
bit of weed make it go away? Oh yes, instantly, but I prefer not to live my
life stoned. Marinol made me stoned, even on the smallest dose, so that was my
choice and I am not against anyone smoking for any reason, their choice, and
their body. As for my procreoception and lack of muscle strength, well I!
exercise and for me, the worse and weaker I feel, the more I work out. I have
above normal strength now for a woman of my age and it has helped me immensely.
I read on here all the time to take it easy and let your body heal, well I
believe that after the initial 6 months or so, working until fatigue is not a
bad thing. I don’t work to fatigue every time I work out, but I do about once a
month and after a nap, I am fine. I do feel muscle pain at certain points and
to me, that is a good feeling. I know if I feel muscle soreness on my left, my
right side worked also. It has worked for and continues to do so. Building
muscle hurts the able bodied, why should we be different?
I also see a neuro in NJ and after 8 years, my babinsky, not sure if that is
spelled correctly, is no longer positive and he can’t explain it. I have to
tell you that my neuro here is a Doogie Howser type of man. He is extrememly
young, and Columbia trained, so he isn’t a slouch and he concurs with
everything I do. I do take B12, and my B12 levels are totally normal, yet after
a shot, my nerve pain goes almost totally away and medically, there is no
reason for this. Do I care that there is no reason? No way, as far as I am
concerned, it helps me that is all that matters.
I also read on here that we shouldn’t boost our immune system, well I am not so
sure about that. Again, this is my opinion and how I live and believe. So many
of us are idiopathic, I don’t know that I have an autoimmune disease because TM
is a symptom, not a disease. I believe that possibly my immune system was
whacked, not weak, so I keep mine very strong with the food I eat and don’t
eat. I don’t want it weak, I want mine strong and working and this works for
me. There are other supplements that I take as needed, such as lycine, but I
won’t go into the list on here because we all have different issues and
different needs.
Jenna, go for it. If it works for you, I want to thank you for telling us all
about it. I find it extremely interesting and because it helps you, it
interests me. I prefer anything natural over meds. I do believe that some
people absolutely need medication, but I also believe that there are many, many
other things out there that can help us also and we all can make our own
decisions as to what we need and want and the more information we share with
each other the better for everyone.
Well, I am done and off my bully pulpit.
Lori

Use GoodSearch to Benefit TMA!

The Transverse Myelitis Association is one of the charities participating in
GoodSearch, a new Internet search engine that donates half of the advertising
revenue it earns to charity. Each time you use GoodSearch and designate the
Transverse Myelitis Association as your charity of choice, GoodSearch will
donate a portion of the advertising revenue earned from the search to the
Transverse Myelitis Association.

It’s easy to use. Just go to the GoodSearch homepage www.goodsearch.com and
type “myelitis” into the “Who do you GoodSearch for?” box, and click verify.
After the first time, each time you return to the home page, Transverse
Myelitis Association will appear as your designated charity. There is even a
button you can click to see the number of searches and the amount raised.

Add GoodSearch to your bookmarks or make it your homepage to make it easier to
use. Also, spread the word to your family and friends to help generate more
contributions. GoodSearch estimates each search will raise $0.01 for your
designated charity. 100 supporters searching twice a day could generate $730 a
year, 1000 supporters - $7,300, and 10,000 supporters searching twice a day
could generate $73,000!

With your help, GoodSearch can generate donations, at no cost to you that will
help fund the goals of the Transverse Myelitis Association.

The blue ones that I use a lot
Tell me I'm happy when I'm not.
The purple pill goes to my brain
And tells me that I have no pain.
The capsules tell me not to wheeze
Or cough or choke or even sneeze.
The red ones, smallest of them all
Go to my blood so I won't stumble or fall.
The orange ones, very big and bright

Such an array of brilliant pills
Helping to cure all kinds of ills.
But what I'd really like to know...
Is what tells each one where to go!

Subject: [TMIC] TM questions from new member

Would appreciate feedback on following ten questions from a new member
 (woman, 59):

 1) Dilemma of flu vaccination. I have had it for six years but since the
onset of TM two years ago, one neurologist decided not to give it. I read
it
might cause neurological damage or paralysis and wonder if my previous
shots
harmed me, and if I should take the shot this season. = THE FLU VACCINE
IS KNOWN TO HAVE CAUSED TM IN A FEW CASES. I, PERSONALLY DO NOT TAKE IT AS
DO OTHERS, BUT, THEN AGAIN, SOME DO TAKE IT. I GUESS IT IS A PERSONAL
CHOICE. I TRY MY BEST NOT TO BE EXPOSED TO CROWDS OR OTHERS FROM WHOM I
MAY CONTRACT IT AND KEEP A BOTTLE OF PUREL WITH ME AND PUT IT ON MY HANDS
FREQUENTLY WHEN I AM OUT AND TOUCHING DOOR KNOBS, ETC THAT ARE ALSO TOUCHED
BY OTHERS, BEFORE I USE MY HANDS TO TOUCH MY MOUTH OR EYES. EVEN WITH ALL
THIS PRECAUTION, I SEEM TO HAVE MANAGED TO CATCH A COLD, I THINK FROM MY
DAUGHTER, WHO CAME TO VISIT AND USED MY BATHROOM. OH, WELL.
 2) My case started in January 2005, gradually, and took eight months to
diagnose, might be better now if physio started immediately when I still
could stand and use walker. Now in wheelchair, unable to stand, despite
six
months of physio. Is there any hope? One neurologist said there is no hope
whatsoever that I would ever improve or walk. IN MANY CASES, TM IS
DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE, ESPECIALLY IF THE DOCTOR IS NOT THAT FAMILIAR WITH
TM. IMPROVEMENT WILL GENERALLY CONTINUE FOR UP TO TWO YEARS, OR SO, AND
SOME GRADUAL IMPROVEMENT AFTER THAT = NOTE, I SAID 'GENERALLY'. SOME HAVE
CONTINUED TO IMPROVE SIGNIFICANTLY AFTER THE TWO YEARS. I WOULD SEE IF YOU
COULD GET MORE PHYSIO IF POSSIBLE. REMEMBER, THERE IS ALWAYS HOPE. I'VE
HAD TM FOR 12 YEARS NOW AND AM PARALYZED FROM THE CHEST DOWN. I CAN NOW
MOVE BOTH MY LEGS WHEN IN THE POOL OR LYING IN BED IN THE MORNINGS AFTER A
GOOD NIGHT'S REST. IT AN 'T MUCH, BUT IT HELPS WHEN TRYING TO TURN IN BED.
FIND SOME PHYSIO YOU CAN DO ON YOUR OWN, THERE ARE THERA BANDS AVAILABLE
THAT YOU CAN USE TO PROVIDE RESISTANCE FOR EXERCISE OF YOUR MUSCLES AND
STIMULATING YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM. JUST DO WHAT YOU CAN TO KEEP MOVING.
 3) Pain. Neurontin did not help and caused swelling of feet, gradual
withdrawal was horrible, still ongoing, on advice of a doctor and
pharmacist. Using Dilaudid (hydromorphone) which works but it is a heavy
narcotic. Still, in pain most of the time. Should I just bear it and hope
to
learn pain management without drugs? Stress is a big trigger. PAIN
EFFECTS EACH DIFFERENTLY, ONE DOES MARIJUANA AND OTHERS TRY VARIOUS
PRESCRIBED DRUGS. I JUST GRIN AND BEAR IT OUT. YOU CAN LEARN PAIN
MANAGEMENT ON YOUR OWN. I FIND THAT BY KEEPING MYSELF BUSY, I CANNOT DWELL
ON THE PAIN THAT MUCH AND IT SEEMS TO LESSEN.
 4) Montreal General Hospital Pain Clinic prescribed also Nortriptyline for
pain (low dose) but I read about side effrects and have not had courage to
even start. Anyone using it? SOMEONE ELSE WILL HAVE TO ANSWER THIS ONE,
I DO NOT USE AND PAIN MEDS, EXCEPT AN OCCASIONAL EXTRA STRENGTH TYLENOL
 5) I have numbness of fingers and hands; several doctore speculate it is
possibly pinched nerve (at elbows) but it has been now almost three
months.
I am due for next MRI end of November to see if lesion has grown bigger.
THAT NUMBNESS IS PROBABLY A NORMAL SIDE EFFECT OF TM, OR COULD BE A PINCHED
NERVE. NEURO STIM ELECTRO CONDUCTIVITY TESTS CAN TELL WHICH, BUT IT IS
QUITE PAINFUL TO GO THRU. IT COULD FROM YOUR WHEELING THE CHAIR.
 6) My left arm is very painful, could it be a carpal tunnel syndrome from
wheeling my chair? MOST PROBABLY FROM THE CHAIR. TRY PUSHING THE WHEEL
DOWNWARDS INSTEAD OF PULLING IT UPWARDS. ALSO, STAY OFF CARPET AS MUCH AS
POSSIBLE. MY HOUSE HAS ALL TILE OR WOOD NOW.
 7) I have tried hypnosis, meditation, osteopathy, Chi Gong, and still do.
Would acupuncture help? I RECOMMEND TIA CHEE [SP], AS IT IS BOTH
MEDITATION AND MUSCLE RELAXING. DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE,
SOME HAVE USED IT WITH SUCCESS AND OTHERS, NOT SO SUCCESSFUL.
 8) This all started with intense itching for 3 months, anyone else had
that?
Itching stopped when this disease started with dropfoot and progressed
from
there.THIS IS A TYPICAL START OF TM Also, I had breast cancer with chemo
and radiation six years ago;
could it have harmed my immune system for virus to attack? THERE IS NO
WAY TO REALLY TELL ON THAT, BUT IF YOU GOTTA BLAME SOMETHING, THAT WILL DO
AS GOOD AS ANYTHING, I GUESS.
 9) I had bad gastro (vomiting and diarrhea) just before onset , then
another
episode a year later which deteriorated my case. Anyone else? HAVEN'T
HEARD OF THAT, BUT IF CAUSED BY A VIRUS OR WAYWARD BACTERIA, IT COULD

2006 Update of the NHS Trusts Clinical Trials Register

The 2006 Update of the NHS Trusts Clinical Trials Register is now available online at http://www.controlled-trials.com/mrct/

The 2006 Update adds 268 randomised controlled trials to the ones identified in 2003, 2004 and 2005, bringing the total to over 1400 trial records.

The NHS Trusts Clinical Trials Register includes the following randomised controlled trials:

Trials taking place in England
With an end date greater than 31 March 2003
In a location that is the lead centre in the case of a multicentre trial
For which all research costs have been met by the NHS Trust.

Faculty of 1000 Medicine: offering multiple perspectives of a single trial
A recent article in the Lancet comparing haemodiafiltration to haemodialysis has attracted evaluations from Faculty Members in three different Faculties:

Patrick Neligan from the Anesthesiology Pain Management Faculty felt the findings were controversial, given their "sobering figures" on mortality, but said that the article was "unlikely ... (to) dramatically change practice"

Greg McAnulty from the Critical Care Emergency Medicine Faculty felt that because the trial showed an "equivalence in outcome" it confirmed what we already knew

And Andrew Davenport from the Nephrology Faculty found the article controversial because by saying the "the modality of renal replacement therapy ... did not impact on patient survival" it refuted existing thinking
Gathering different perspectives on a single article is a key component of Faculty of 1000 Medicine. To learn more, take a free trial.

2006-10-10 Thread ROBERT COOK
I PERSONALLY THINK A LOT OF THE 'NEWBIES TO THE LIST ARE DESPERATELY
SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS IN A FORMAT OR PRESENTATION THEY CAN EASILY ABSORB
WITHOUT INTERACTION ON A PERSONAL BASIS, AND WHEN THEY SEE E-MAIL FROM THE
LIST THAT IS NOT CONDUCIVE TO AN IMMEDIATE INFORMATION SOURCE REGARDING
THEIR REASONS FOR JOINING IN THE FIRST PLACE, THEY GET FRUSTRATED [WHICH,
AS YOU ALL WELL KNOW, IS EASILY DONE IF YOU HAVE TM, DEVICS OR OTHER
RELATED PROBLEMS] AND GIVE UP AND UNSUBSCRIBE.

LIKE I SAID BEFORE, WE ARE LIKE A FAMILY SITTING DOWN FOR DINNER CONVERSING
ABOUT WHATEVER ENTERS OUR MIND, AND NOT NECESSARILY WHAT EFFECTS THE
'FAMILY' AS A WHOLE.

NEWBIES ARE AFRAID TO INITIATE SUBJECTS FOR CONVERSATION, BUT ARE JUST AT
THE TABLE TO LISTEN FIRST AND SEE WHAT IS BEING SERVED UP. IF THEY DO NOT
LIKE THE MENU, THEY LEAVE BEFORE DESERT IS SERVED, OR BETTER YET, THEY WAIT
IN THE FOYER AND LISTEN TO WHAT IS GOING ON [EVES DROPPING] , AND IF THE
MENU DOES NOT SOUND INTERESTING, THEY LEAVE WITHOUT SEEING WHAT IS FOR
DESERT.

SAID SIMPLY, WE POST LOTS OF E-MAIL THAT IS NOT ALL TOGETHER THAT
INFORMATIVE OR INTERESTING TO NEWBIES AND THEY PACK UP AND LEAVE, MANY DO
SO WITHOUT US EVEN KNOWING THEY WERE SUBSCRIBED.

IT WOULD BE GREAT IF WE WERE INFORMED WHEN A NEWBIE JOINS, AND THEN THEY
CAN BE SENT A FORM OR 'PAT' E-MAIL INFORMING THEM THEY ARE WELCOME AND TO
BENEFIT FROM THE TMIC, THEY SHOULD INTRODUCE THEMSELVES AND POST THEIR
INQUIRIES FOR RESPONSES, OTHERWISE, THEY WILL BE COMING IN ON A
CONVERSATION OF E-MAILS THAT MAY WELL NOT MAKE SENSE TO THEM, THEY GET
BORED TO A FEELING OF THE LIST NOT BEING WHAT THEY MIGHT HAVE THOUGHT IT
WAS, AND LEAVE, WITHOUT SO MUCH AS A HOWDY-DO.

IF LUBIN CAN'T HAVE THE SYSTEM MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT OF A NEWBIE JOINING FOR
US TO WELCOME THEM TO THE DINNER TABLE AND TO JOIN IN, THEN MAYBE A SHORT
SENTENCE AT THE BOTTOM OF OUR E-MAIL COULD WELCOME NEWBIES AND ASK THEM TO
JOIN IN THE CONVERSATION OR POSE THEIR INQUIRIES AT ANY TIME, KINDA LIKE A
SIGN AT THE DOORWAY SAYING, 'COMMON IN, THE WATER'S FINE' AND JOIN IN' , OR
SOME SUCH.

DEB,

I DRIVE ONE LIKE YOU DO FROM MY POWER WHEELCHAIR. IT LOCKS DOWN WHEN IN PLACE AND I USE HAND CONTROLS.

MINE IS A MINI-VAN WITH A LOWERED FLOOR, AUTO SLIDING DOOR AND AUTO FOLD OUT AND IN RAMP. IT IS CALLED A BRAUN ENTERVAN, AND THE PASSENGER SEAT IS SWAPABLE FOR A REGULAR [AB] TO DRIVE IT AS WELL. YOU CAN LOOK THEM UP ON THE INTERNET. ANOTHER COMPANY IS VMI THAT DOES THESE MODIFICATIONS, BUT I PREFER THE BRAUN RAMP OVER THE VMI.

IF YOU ARE DRIVING ONE OF THE LARGER VANS, YOU MIGHT CONSIDER THIS TYPE AS ANOTHER OPTION. BETTER GAS MILEAGE AND IS EASIER TO DRIVE AND GET INTO PARKING GARAGES.

IF YOU WANT TO BE MACHO ABOUT IT, THERE IS A THREE DOOR PICKUP THAT CAN BE MODIFIED FOR WHEELCHAIRS WITH A POWER LIFT. I SAW ONE THE OTHER DAY THAT WAS ALL JACKED UP, BIG TIRES AND ALL. THE GUY USES IT TO GET OUT ON ROUGH ROADS FOR HIS WORK AND FOR HUNTING AND FISHING.

TRANSFERRING IS FOR THE BIRDS. I GOT TO WHERE I DID NOT WANT TO GO OUT MUCH UNLESS I HAD TO BECAUSE OF THE TRANSFERS = MY FIRST VAN HAD A SWIVEL THREE WAY SEAT I TRANSFERRED INTO TO DRIVE, AND BECAME A REAL PAIN IN THE A _ _ , IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

THEY DO MAKE A CAR THAT THE DRIVER'S SEAT SWINGS OUT AND LOWERS FOR YOU TO GET INTO AND IT LIFTS YOU INTO THE CAR UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL TO DRIVE, BUT I HAVE NOT SEEN ONE ACTUALLY WORK, ONLY SEEN PICTURES OF IT.

DO SOME CHECKING BEFORE YOU DECIDE, AND REMEMBER, YOU COULD GET WORSE OR BETTER PHYSICALLY. I HAVE LEARNED TO PREPARE FOR THE WORSE AND HOPE FOR THE BEST.

BEST OF LUCK.

Hi Ann in Ireland, and everyone else on the list. I also drive with hand controls. I have a couple of questions for you...Ann, you mentioned that you don't have any control with your feet. I don't have normal movement with my left and hardly any in my right leg. My lesions are from T8-T10. Right now I'm driving a van with a lift and a power seat that I transfer into. This was a godsend for me 2 years ago. I have recurring TM and each episode has left me with more disability, but I am getting stronger and feel like I'm ready for a regular sedan with a chairtopper. I'm getting alot of opposition from my family but I've always been independent and it drives me nuts to be driving this huge vehicle with just me.Also, do you have a powerchair? or do you have a man!
ual wheelchair? If there are any other chair people who are driving I'd love to get some feedback. Right now I'm in a breezy chair and if I get a car with a chairtopper i'll have to invest in a lighter chair. Another concern is the resale of the van. adapting it was quite expensive and i was wondering if anyone has recently sold an adapted van and how you made out.I've been in the background for awhile just reading all of your mail. Your experiences and advice are invaluable. I'm always overwhelmed by how generous you all are with your experiences and knowledge.I love you all!Deb C. in MI. --- On Sun 10/01, Ann Moran [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi Deb and everyone else on the list. I too, stay in the background. I just recently got a new minivan. I get in with a power chair but I can get into the front seat on my own. I took hand control lessons but hated it. I can, however, drive with my right leg but put the hand controls in just in case. What is a chair topper? I get in the van on a ramp.
I do not have a real diagnosis. My neuro thinks I had a spinal cord infarction(stroke) but all my symptoms sound similar to TM - that is why all your input is interesting to me. I can do just about anything but walk on my own. I use a walker at times but I am actually walking with my hands. Cant stand on my own.
I know someone who trades his minivan in when he wants another one but I dont know anything about re-sale value.I imagine that most of the cost is lost in the trade. I would be uncomfortable buying a van from a private p arty. Would rather go thru a dealer.
Anyhow good luck with driving.

Hello to all,
I have been rather quiet lately, hoping to be able to write you all and tell you that I have a new diagnosis. But I can't do that YET! I definitely think it is good to reach out and ask for everyone's opinions, help and support. And that is what I am doing right now.

I was diagnosed with TM in June 2005. After what was thought to be 2 or 3 relapses within 1 year, my neuro thought I might have MS. After a repeat brain MRI and a Vision Evoked Response Test, which both were negative for MS, he discussed my case with 2 of his colleagues. One said I have MS and to start me on drugs right away and the other one said I did not have MS and not to start me on drugs. When I asked my neuro which side of the fence he was on, he said he liked to know what he was treating and with me he didn't know.

I went to see Dr. Kerrthis pastAugust. Hewas very emphatic that I did nothave MS and hethought it was doubtful that I had TM. Since Ihad coronary artery bypass surgeryabout 9 years ago, he was leaning toward possibly of vascular disease in my back, ie, maybea blockage in my vessels in my spine leading to my lower extremities. So...back home I came to have more testing. He sent a letter to my local doctor, outlininghis suggested test. My local doctor isvery slowly going through these tests. To date, I have had only 2 of them; the ultrasound of the descending aorta and an MRA of the spine. (I had never heard of an MRA) Both ofwhichare negative. So thenexttest is a spinal angiogram. Has anyonehad thisperformed?

Mysymptoms began with a slight low back painwhile bending over the bathtub to give my granddaughter a bath. After that, she went to sleep in her swing, and I napped on the sofa. When I awoke about 1 hour later, my right leg had an intense needles and pins feeling from the toes up to the knee. Within in 1 hour, this needles and pins feeling progressed up to my hip. I went home to bed and the next morning I could not move my right leg. I had to lift it out of bed. I had only slight tingling in my left toes and that was all on my left side. Now 16 months later, my left leg has decreased sensitivity and slight banding, but I have good muscle control.

I remember complaining to my doctor about a backache 2 months prior to the onset of this.He ordered an x-ray of my back, which was negative. I also rememberaround this same time, my bottom having a needles and pins feeling when I sat in my office chair. I just laughed it off thinking I needed to get off my butt and go out and make some sales calls (to doctors no less). My local doctors said the pain from giving the baby a bath and these other things have nothing to do with my current problem, TM or whatever! Oh, one last thing I found interesting. Dr. Kerr said my spinal tap that I had while in the hospital June 2005 was negativefor TM. So could someone explain why my doctors continued with a diagnosis of TM?

My TM started as a feeling of first my right leg going numb, followed about an hourlater with my left leg doing the same. In all it took less than 3 hours for me to lose all sensation below my waist.Even though it is over 9 years ago I cannot recall any pain whatsoever. In fact all of my discomfort started months later when some feeling returned. Unfortunatley thefeeling that returned was pins and needles, numbness, and horrible banding.

I had my annual evaluation last week with Dr. Kerr and as always he gave me hope. He is going ahead full steam with stem cells and hopes to havehis first human tests within 2-3 years. As always I volunteered tobe in the first

IF IT STINKS, IS MILKY-MURKY-OFF COLOR FOR MORE THAN A FEW DAYS, YOU PROBABLY HAVE A UTI. THERE IS A LITMUS TEST KIT YOU CAN ALSO USE, BUT IS IS JUST A SCREENER AND NOT FOR DIAGNOSIS.

OTHERWISE, WHEN YOU SEE YOUR DOCTOR, HAVE HIM/HER DO TESTS FOR UTI EACH TIME FOR GOOD MEASURE.

TO HELP PREVENT UTI, TAKE LOTS OF VITAMIN C AND DRINK CRANBERRY JUICE.

Would I be able to have the sensations that goes along with UTI, such as burning? I don't think I have this, but sometimes the stream is so little, I know that I am not emptying completely.Linda Garrett

They work faster and most of the people I know with paralysis use them. They were also recommended by my rehab doctor. Oh and they are cheaper. You can get a box of a 100 for 45 bucks here http://www.allegromedical.com/browse/ProductDetail.do?pid=190938utm_source=MSNutm_medium=ppcutm_term=magic%20bullet%20suppositories.

 Fish oil questions
 1. Did someone tell us that fish oil made him dizzy so he had to take it
at night? (Or was that flax seed oil?)
 2. Do you take more than 1000mg at one time or space these out during the
day?
 3. Is fish oil supposed to be good for the brain function? That would
make it good brain food! I thin that was why I started on the 1000mg in the
first place.
 4. If I couldn't before, will I finally be able to swim? It would help
during boating!
 5. How do you squeeze oil out of the fish?

I have been using Fish Oil Tablets now for about 3 months, I started to help with lowering my cholesterol but then I heard on a TV programme where some researchers here in Adelaide, had been doing human trials using it as a weight loss tool.

They suggest 6 x 1000mg tablets per day.

Well, I have done my own tm fat girl trial and I am so happy to tell you IT WORKS

I have not changed my diet, exercise, not anything.

The other great benefit that I have noticed is that my skin is now so soft. I have always had very dry skin and of course it became more so ATM. It's now better than it's ever been which is not so shabby for a 59 year old I reckon.

I do believe also that it must improve the skin's elasticity because I'm not suffering from the drooping flesh which is so often a very unpleasant residual of huge weight loss.

I have wanted to share this for some time but thought I should stifle my impulsive temperament for a little while to make sure I wasn't dreaming.

Hope it's helpful to someone.

Most definitely, stress has been shown to play an important factor in TM
for many. You might talk with your neuro about checking the level of
protein in your CSF. Bad thing is it requires a spinal tap. This could
assist in confirming a relapse or not. If a relapse is suspected, some
have benefited from Plasmapharesis treatments to remove excess anti-bodies
from our system, which are thought to be the cause of demyelination in many
cases.

Unfortunately, steroid treatment/therapy is the recommended course. I am
not aware of anything to help control the side effects of confusion and

June 2005, diagnosed TM. Hospitalized 5 weeks. One week IV steroids, 4
weeks aggressive rehab. Got strong enough to walk again.

Beginning of Feb 2006 I started growing weaker. My most affected leg
becoming more limp with tighter banding. Met with my neuro, who
suggested
f/u MRI to look for any changes since June and a Visual Evoked Response
Test. The brain MRI showed no change. Which I guess is good since he
was
looking for MS. But now he says it must must be a relapse of TM.This
past
weekend, felt like my back was swollen, both legs got worse. I was on an
 oral dose of
Methylprednisolone (Steroid) 250 mg 2 capsules twice daily for 5 days
then
1 daily for 5 days, the neuro said that was equal to the IV I had in
June.
Since I finished this dosage 2 days ago, I became worse. Today my neuro
is
now putting me back on a steroid, but a different one and a lower dose.
Prednisone 60 mg for 4 days, then 40mg for 4 days, and then 20 mg for 4
days. I HATE the way I felt while I was on the Methylprednisolone. I
was
depressed, food tasted like crap, and overall feeling of exhaustion. I
am
also diabetic, controlled by Actos, diet and exercise. Naturally, taking
the steroids I had to use insulin injections to keep the blood sugar
under
control. What I would like to do is crawl in a dark room and stay there
for
the next 12 days. :( AND I have an interview for a new job on March
3rd,
cause I got fired from my last one cause I can't keep my thoughts
straight
and not learning it fast enough. I have NEVER encountered this problem
before. Is there anything I can do? What else besides steroids are out
there for this monster, TM? How many relapses are probable? I was doing
so
good and now back to using the walker. Could stress from the job have
brought on the relapse. Are there any finding of this sort that stress
and

Hi there

My husband has TM… he walks and works teaching young soldiers how to mend tanks! He struggles some days to get out of bed but loves what he does. He teaches on 2 different size tanks. When teaching the large tanks he does not have to stand for prolonged periods. On the small tanks he does, which can then make it impossible to walk for a few days…..so it was agreed by various bosses including his direct boss Tom that he would stay with the large tanks. However since then his boss Tom is constantly putting him down in front off the other staff and has asked personnel/HR to get hold of his medical records. This Tom obviously has a problem with Roger and his TM which no one seems to understand over here in the UK anyway. It’s hard enough for Roger to live his life with TM anyway without all these letters he gets when he gets home form is working day regarding proof of what he has and what he can do at work. His big boss is an old friend from his army days and has no problem with Roger. It’s this chap Tom doing a witch hunt. He works for a very large company called Vosper Thorneycroft. He has joined his union now since this all kicked off about 6 months ago and got resolved or so we thought!
Roger is a private man and really does not want his private medical records to be given to his company. It has details of depression and counseling in it plus details about erectile dysfunction and everything he tried to overcome it which is all part of his TM but nothing to do with his physical capability at work.
Sorry to go on but I needed to explain the situation before asking if any of you guys had been in a similar situation and could offer any worthwhile advice. I suggested that he send a letter from our solicitor saying he feels as though he is being harassed and discriminated against, what do you think?

good and now back to using the walker. Could stress from the job have
brought on the relapse. Are there any finding of this sort that stress
and
TM do not mix? How do I get through the next 12 days of steroids and and
interview? How did you all overcome the ill affects of steroids when you
 were on them?

Recap: my concerns of relapse, feeling of sickness and depression and
overall feeling of cloudiness while taking the steroids.

To Robert Cook(Bob in Houston-Springs, TX.) - and anyone else who's interested:

What you say sounds logical, but ispartially incorrect.

Yes, the urine needs to be acidic, but NO, and yes, OJ is acidic, but

orange juiceis NOT acidic in the body.

Citrus fruits/juices are some of the main things you eat/drink to make your body ( urine)more ALKALINE. It sounds strange, but as the food is metabolized by the body, it leaves an ALKALINE ash,and consequentlyhas an alkalizing affect on the body. This is true of most fruits and vegetables. Cranberries are one of the few exceptions.

Vitamin C, on the other hand, I believe,is usually acidic unless it's buffered, because of the ascorbic acid init. However, the acidity of vitamins is one thing I'm still seeking to verify, and haven't been able to findmuch on.

I, too, thought this sounded strange, and therefore it was one of the first things I sought to verify when Istarted my degree in nutrition. My prof explained that though it's acidic outside of the body, it's effect on the body is alkalizing.

Sally

PS: ALKALINE foods are generally very good for the body, though, especially when healing, because most people are over-acidic, and many think that being over-acidic leads to disease. I agree, and feel that my eating mostly alkaline foods, especially since the onset of my TM,has contributed to my healing. (I maywrite more on this later if anyone is interested.)

Hi Grace,

When first admitted to the hospital I could barely move my right leg and when the doctor ran that little thang-ama-jiggy up and down the leg I could not feel anything from the pelvis region down, but when he started sticking needles in me I could feel that until he got to the lower thigh area and then nothing. I could not move my left leg at all and could not feel anything from the pelvic region down, but yet there was still pain in both legs and the pain was equal in both.

I was still in pain from the spinal surgery they had preformed 1 week earlier and when the TM hit full force, oh good grief the pain was almost unbearable. Plus right after I was admitted back to the hospital they discovered I had a staff infection in the incision so they had to treat that. Then they discovered the incision was not draining as it should, so they put in a drain. So not only were they trying to treat the TM, they were having to treat the incision. So my legs hurt, my back hurt, my arms hurt from all the needles that had been jobbed in me, my you-no-what hurt from the catheter, and I'm glad we won the warLOL And then just when I thought things were getting a little better, here comes the people from PT. I had worked in the medical field for 16 years and it was at this point in time that I truly learned what PT stood for- PAIN TERRORIST. But thank goodness after several months I was able !
to stop the steroids and so far I have not had a relapse.

Oh I did have a question. I think I read somewhere that people with TM are prone to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Are you or anyone else aware of this or have you heard or read this is true. For the last month or so I have been having a problem big time with pain in my right wrist. I have no idea what is going on with it. Any suggestions would be great.

I HAVE OFTEN WONDERED IF SOME OF THE 'NEW SENSATION' WE SOMETIMES EXPERIENCE IF AS THE RESULT OF VERY MINOR AND ALMOST INSIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN OUR NERVES ABILITY TO CONDUCT SIGNALS. IT SEEMS THAT EACH TIME I EXPERIENCE A NEW SENSATION LIKE MORE OR LESS ITCHING, MORE OR LESS MUSCLE TWITCHING, MORE OR LESS PAIN, OR OTHER ODD SENSATIONS, I SOMETIMES ALSO EXPERIENCE A VERY INSIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN SOME PART OF MY MUSCLE FUNCTION.

WHEN I LEFT THE RAHAB HOSPITAL IN FEB. 1994, I COULD ONLY MOVE MY RIGHT BIG TOE, ON OCCASION. OVER THE YEARS-YOU DO THE MATH-I CAN NOW LIFT MY RIGHT LEG AND MOVE IT TO THE RIGHT AND LEFT, BUT NOT WITH ANY STRENGTH TO SPEAK OF, MY TORSO MUSCLES HAVE IMPROVED ON THE RIGHT SIDE JUST ENOUGH THAT I HAVE A TENDENCY TO CURVE TO THE LEFT MAKING MY BODY LOOK LIKE A CROISSANT AND MY BACK MUSCLES ARE IMPROVED JUST ENOUGH TO ALLOW ME TO BEND OVER AND STRAIGHTEN MYSELF UP, ON OCCASION. COUPLED WITH THAT SEEMING IMPROVEMENT, I ALSO EXPERIENCE MUSCLE SPASMS THAT CAN WRETCH MY BODY OR LEGS TO THE POINT I COULD HURT MYSELF OR ANYONE NEAR ME.

I FIGURE IT IS THE NERVE CONDUCTIVITY IMPROVEMENT AND THEY HAVE A TENDENCY TO MISS-FIRE A LOT. THEY ALSO HAVE A DELAYED REACTION TO MY BRAIN SIGNALS, LIKE WHEN I WANT TO MOVE MY LEG, I TELL IT TO MOVE, AND A SECOND OR TWO LATER, IT DOES, BUT NOT NECESSARILY THE WAY I HAD INTENDED = CROSS-WIRED NERVE SIGNALS THAT SEND THE SIGNALS VIA A SLOW BOAT TO CHINA WHEN IT COULD HAVE JUST GONE STRAIGHT THRU.

SO MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, THESE WEIRD FEELINGS AND SENSATIONS WE SOMETIMES EXPERIENCE, ARE SIGNS OF IMPROVEMENT OF SOME TYPE, BE IT EVER SO INSIGNIFICANT AND IMMEASURABLE AT THE TIME.

I TAKE NO DRUGS FOR THESE WEIRD FEELINGS, I KINDA LIKE THEM AND JUST WAIT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT. LIKE, THE OTHER DAY, I MANAGED TO LIFT MY RIGHT LEG ABOUT TEN TIMES WHILE LYING IN THE BED. I TRIED THE NEXT MORNING, AND IT DID NOT WORK. I GUESS THAT SLOW BOAT GOT SHANGHAIED OR THE PIRATES GOT IT. BUT OCCASIONALLY, I CAN LIFT IT, , , GO FIGURE. IT MAKES LIFE WITH TM INTERESTING FOR ME, SINCE I HAVE NOTHING ELSE THAT CAN EXCITE ME AS MUCH AS THAT DOES.

For the last few days I've been experiencing what feels like a sort of vibration or trembling feeling in some of my muscles. It seems to travel around between my chest, left forearm and thighs. I've experienced it to a smaller degree before, but never this much area at one time or for this length of time. It isn't painful or uncomfortable, and I'm not worried about it per se. It's just disconcerting. Ten years post-TM, I know that these kinds of things come and go.

Anyone else experience this?

EVEN IF WE HAVE TM

My question to all of you is: Would you have made the same choice? At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning disabled children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question. "When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?" The audience was stilled by the query. The father continued. "I believe, that when a child like Shay comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes, in the way other people treat that child." !
Then he told the following story: Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, "Do you think they'll let me play?" Shay's father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging. Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and, getting none, he took matters into his own hands and said, "We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning." In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the outfield. Even though no hits came his wa!
y, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and !
 on the f

ield, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat. At this juncture, let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible 'cause Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball. However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least be able to make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder!
and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game. Instead, the pitcher took the ball and turned and threw the ball on a high arc to right field, far beyond the reach of the first baseman. Everyone started yelling, "Shay, run to first! Run to first!" Never in his life had Shay ever made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled. Everyone yelled, "Run to second, run to second!" By the time Shay rounded first base, the right fielder had the ball. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions and intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head. Shay ran toward second base as the runners ahead of him deliriously circled the bases toward home. Shay reached second base, the opposing shortstop ran to him, turned him in the !
direction of third base, and shouted, "Run to third!" !
 As Shay

rounded third, the boys from both teams were screaming, "Shay, run home!" Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the "grand slam" and won the game for his team. "That day," said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, "the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world." AND, NOW A LITTLE FOOTNOTE TO THIS STORY: We all send thousands of jokes through the e-mail without a second thought, but when it comes to sending messages about life choices, people think twice about sharing. The crude, vulgar, and often obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion about decency is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces. If you're thinking about forwarding this message, chances are that you're probably sorting out the people on your address list that aren't the "appropriate" ones to receive this type of message. Well, the pers!
on who sent you this believes that we all can make a difference. We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the "natural order of things." So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice: Do we pass along

[TMIC] BREAKING BONES

2005-11-04 Thread ROBERT COOK

I HAVE NO AUTHORITY FOR THIS ASSUMPTION, BUT IT IS MY THOUGHTS THAT THOSE WITH THE MORE SEVERE AFTER EFFECTS OF TM = MORE PARALYSIS = ARE MORE LIKELY TO BREAK BONES THAT OTHERS OR OTHERWISE 'AB's'.

MY REASONING IS THAT THE MUSCLES HELP IN MAINTAINING PHYSICAL POSTURE AND STRUCTURE AND ARE ATTACHED TO THE BONES FOR THE PURPOSE OF MOVEMENT AND AMBULATION. THE MUSCLES HOLD THE BONES IN PLACE AND WRAP AROUND THEM IN A SORT OF PROTECTIVE FASHION OR CUSHION, AND WHEN HIT OR PUT IN A STRAIN, THE BONES ARE PROTECTED BY THE MUSCLES HOLDING THEM IN PLACE AND WRAPPING AROUND THEM AT FULL TENSION AS A PROTECTOR OR SORTS.

MY MUSCLES ARE RATHER FLABBY DUE TO THE PARALYSIS AND IF A LEG IS STRUCK OR PUT IN A TENSION STRESS, THE BONE WOULD BE EASIER TO BREAK.

JMHO

I HAVE BROKEN A MUSCLE DUE TO A SPASM, ONCE. SURE GLAD I COULDN'T FEEL IT. IT SOUNDED LIKE A SHOT GUN FIRING - BAMM. NO THAT WAS NOT SEASONING, EITHER

RE: [TMIC] the bathroom blues..

SOUNDS LIKE IT IS TOO LATE FOR THE JUICE. YOU MIGHT ALREADY HAVE AN INFECTION AND ONLY ANTIBIOTICS CAN FIX THAT. CRANBERRY OR ANY OTHER NON Rx IS FOR PREVENTATIVE, ONLY, OR SO I HAVE BEEN ADVISED.

ALSO, YOU MIGHT BE HAVING BLADDER SPASMS CAUSED BY THE INFECTION.

OK, now it's going the OTHER wayall of a sudden I have to pee right away, and FAST! Or I start to leak and almost don't make it and when I DO go, it's a small trickle or small amt. This JUST started this afternoon out of the blue!
Guess I'll start my cranberry juice!

All of Gina's emails werebouncing back. Also, if I remember correctly, some time ago there were one or two others from the list who were getting bounced. TMIC is the only place that I have problems. Keep checking it out on your end, and I'll keep looking here.

[TMIC] MY 1ST 15 MINS OF THE DAY

2005-10-18 Thread ROBERT COOK

YE! MY DAY STARTED OFF FANTASTIC. . . . . . . I WOKE UP AND WAS STILL HERE ON EARTH AND STILL ALIVE !!

NICE AND COMFY IN THE WARM BED, FELT SO GREAT, LISTENING TO SPOUSETTE'S SHOWER WATER RUNNING AND A FAINT AUDIO TV SOUND COMING FROM THE FAMILY ROOM. STRETCING MY ARMS AND THINKING OF ROLLING OVER FOR A FEW MORE MINUTES SNOOZE BEFORE I GET UP . . . . . BUT THE SOUND OF THECOFFEE PERKING AND INVITING AROMA EMINATINFFROM THE KITCHEN BECONED ME TO GIT UP AND BE SOMEBODY AND GO OUT BACK AND LISTEN TO THE MORNING BOIRDS SINGING AND SEE IFTHE NEW PARROT WHO MUST BE AN ESCAPEE AND WHO DECIDED TO TAKE UP RESIDENCE IN ONE OF OUR TREES WAS STILL OUT THERE DOING HIS SQUEECHING AND SQUAKING, AND TO WATCH THE SUN RISE.

AH, WHAT A GREAT DAY IT IS GOING TO BE !

I TAKES OFF MY C-PAP, LOWER MY WHEELCHAIR SEAT FOR EASY TRANSFER FROM THE BED, LAY THERE FOR A FEW MORE MOMENTS WISHING THAT C-PAP WOULD DIE SO I COULD DO WITHOUT IT FOR A FEW DAYS UNTIL ANOTHER ONE CAME TO REPLACE IT. DECIDED TO WAKE UP MY LEGS BY CREATING A SPASM IN MY ABS THAT MAKES THEM THRASH AROUND LIKE FISH OUTA WATER AND FORCE THEM BACK DOWN BY PUSHING ON MY KNEES. DANG, WHAT A RUSH !!! IT JUST PLAIN TAKES YOUR BREATH AWAY, LITERALLY !!! ALMOST AS GOOD AS SOME OTHER THINGS THAT ARE/WERE DONE IN BED.

OH OH, NOW THE DEVILS ARE AWAKE ! WAIT A MINUTE AND THEY WILL LET ME KNOW THEY ARE WHEN THEY BEGING TO BURN FROM BEING DISTURBED, WHAT A SWEET REMINDER THEY ARE THE WAY THEY CAN DO THAT. NOTHING LIKE IT IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD.

NOW, LET'S DO THAT ABB SPAZ AGAIN AND GIT THE BUGGERS TO BEND AT THE KNEES AND CURL IN SO'S I CAN TRICK THEM INTO SLIDING OVER THE SIDE OF THE BED AND AT THE SAME TIME PULL MYSELF UP BY THE WHEELCHAIR BACK BEFORE THEY REALIZE THEY ARE DOING WHAT THEY WERE ORIGINALLY DESIGNED TO DO AND SPAZ AGAIN CURLING UP AND HURLING ME BACK INTO THE BED . . .. I WANT MY COFFEE AND DON'T REALLY GIVE A DAMN IF THEY DON'T WANT TO GO LIKE I PLAN ON OR NOT.. . . I'M GITTING UP !!!

I BEAT THEMTO IT I'M SITTING UP ON THE SIDE OF THE BED AND TELLING MY STIFF BACK TO RELAX THOSE MUSCLE TONES SO I CAN SLIDE OVER ONTO OLD BETSY [NAME FOR MY WHEELCHAIR-I JUST MADE UP FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS TALE]. THE TRANSFER WENT PRETTY GOOD, NOW TO SEE IF THOSE LEGS WILL COOPERATE AND STOP BOUNCING AROUND LIKE SOMEONE IS PLAYING A FIDDLE HOP TUNE, AND LET ME SET THEM WHERE THEY BELONG, , , NOT THAT THEY WILL STAY THERE VERY LONG, BUT YOU GOTTA START THEM OFF RIGHT, YA KNOW.

NOW TO REACH BACK BEHIND THE CHAIR,WITHOUT THE BUGGERS CATCHING ME OFF GUARD AND SPAZING OUT OF THEIR STIRRUPS, AND UNPLUG THE BATTERY CHARGER, PUT MY SIDE ARM REST BACK ON THAT WAS REMOVED FOR THE TRANSFERS, AND START THIS THING UP AND GIT TO ROLLING . . ... THE COFFEE BREWER HAS SHUT OFF AND I PREFER IT FRESH, WITH ONE SUGAR AND LOTS A COFFEE MATE.

OOPS, GOTTA GRAB A TOWEL OFF THE ARMOIIR TO COVER SELF WITH - I SLEEP SANS CLOTHING OF ANY KIND BECAUSE THEY SQUENCH UP AND TWIST IN THE MOST GAWD-AWFUL WAYS THAT IT WILL DRIVE YOU NUTS [PUN INTENDED HERE, FOLKS] WHILE TRYING TO SLEEP - AND GO GET THAT FIRST CUP-A-JAVA.

OOPS, DETOUR TO THE BATHROOM FIRST, NEED TO EMPTY THE OLD LEG BAG, IT'S KINDA FULL AND PUT MY TEETH BACK IN.. . . AFTER WASHING MY HAND, OF COURSE.

NOW, OFF ROLLING TO THE KITCHEN, GET OUTA DA WAY CAT, UNLESS YA WANT YER TAIL RAN OVER, I'M HEADING FER THE KITCHEN AND IT'S KINDA DARK IN HERE YET, THE SUNLIGHT HAS NOT STARTED TO COME THRU THE SKY LIGHTS BECAUSE IT AN'T AWAKE YET - BUT THOSE BUGGER LEGS SURE AS HELL ARE AND TELLING ME ABOUT IT EVERY MINUTE, , , , , . ESCROW THE BUGGERS, I WANT MY COFFEE !

AHH HH H, NOTIN LIKE CHICKORY FLAVORED COFFEE IN MY CUP FIRST THING IN THE MORNING !! NOW THE TRICK IS TO TAKE A BIG SIP OUT OF IT SO'S IT WON'T SPILL AS I GO OUT THE BACK DOOR, , , WATCH OUT CAT, I'L OPENING THE DOOR FORTHE NOTH OF US . . . . OH SCHEIST THE PULL ROPE ON THE DOOR CAUGHT ON MY WHEELCHAIR AS I WAS ROLLING THRU, MADE ME VEER TO THE RIGHT HITING THE DOOR JAM, THE COFFEE IS BURNING THE YOU KNOW WHAT OUT OF MY NUB THAT WAS TRYING TO BALANCE IT ON THE ARM REST AND KEEP IT FROM SPILLING ONTO MY CROTCHAND THE WHEELCHAIR IS NOW STUCK AND DOWANNA GO NO MORE.

THE CAT WANTS OUT AND IS COMING AROUND THE WHEELS AND WILL HAVE TO JUMP OVER - I'M SORRY ABOUT THAT CAT. . . .. NOT!!

OK, PLACE THE COFFE BACK SECURE ON THE ARM REST AND SQUEEZ IT DOWN WITH THE TRUSTY OLD NUB, AND SEE IF WE [YES, I ALWAYS CARRY A MOUSE IN MY POCKET] CAN FIND THE TOWEL THAT WAS ON MY LAP COVERINGSELF AND WHICH IS NOW SOAKED WITH COFFEE, SO I CAN ADDRESS IT'S POSITIONING AFTER I GET UNSTUCK AND OUT ONTO THE BACK POURCH - - I WANT MY COFFEE, DAMMIT TO HELL!! OR WHAT'S LEFT OF IT, I AN'T TURNING BACK NOW FOR A REFILL, I'M IN A FORWARD POINTED DIRECTION - BUT KINDA CROSSWAYS IN THE DOORWAY, I ROCK HARD BACK AND FORTH AND GIVE IT FULL THROTTLE, AND WALLA I'M FREE, SAYS WILLIE, LQQK AT M[I'LL COVER HIM IN A MINUTE AFTER I SEE IF I CAN GET THIS THING STOPPED FROM FORWARD

[TMIC] FLAX SEED OIL VS FISH OIL

2005-10-18 Thread ROBERT COOK

OK, I HAD TO GO GET A REFILL ON MY FISH OIL THIS WEEKEND ANYWAY, AS WELL AS MY NIACINIMIDE, AND I HATE IT WHEN I DON'T HAVE AN ANSWER TO A QUESTION, S I TRY TO FIND OUT.

THE LADY AT THE GNC STORE SAID THAT FLAX SEED OILS CONTAIN OMEGA 6 AND 9, WHEREIN FISH OILS CONTAIN OMEGA 3.

THE FLAX SEED OILS HAVE TO BE BROKEN DOWN BY DIGESTION AND TURNED INTO OMEGA 3's, WHEREAS THE OMEGA 3 IN FISH OIL IS READY FOR ABSORPTION WHEN IN IT'S ORIGINAL STATE WITHOUT NEED FOR DIGESTION TO BREAK IT DOWN, AND , , , , ,SOME PEOPLE HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME BREAKING THE FLAX SEED OIL DOWN OR EVEN SOME CANNOT BREAK IT DOWN TO AN OMEGA 3.

THIS IS NOT A CERTIFIED AND VERIFIED DATA SOURCE, BUT MAKES SENSE TO ME, AND I DON'T THINK THE LADY WOULD LIE TO ME.

SELF VERIFICATION IS SUGGESTED BEFORE TAKING OR CHANGING SUPPLEMENTS.

I HAVE NOT SEEN MY NEURO IN YEARS, AND HAVE AD TM SINCE 1994, CONFINED TO A
WHEELCHAIR AND COMPLETELY PARALYZED FROM THE NIPPLE LINE DOWN SINCE THEN.
WHAT CAN HE/SHE DO FOR ME? NO CURE YET, I TOLERATE THE PAIN AND SPASES,
HAVE TRAINED MY BOWELS - SOMETIMES, AND SEE MY GP FOR OTHER MALAYS AND
UTI'S ONLY, BESIDES MY HEART DOCTOR, MY BUTT DOCTOR FOR DECUBITI AND MY
COLON DR FOR DIVERTICULOSIS, AND MY A-HOLE DR FOR HEMORRHOIDS AS WELL AS MY
GP'S BROTHER, THE DENTIST.

I THINK I SUPPORT ENOUGH DOCTORS, AND NO NEED TO HELP MY NEURO OUT ON HIS
NEXT YACHT PAYMENT OR FUEL FILL-UP.

TM came to live with me 12/96. I still see my neuro every 6 months. I
can't imagine anyone with this type of disease to not return for
checkups I would look for a new neuro ASAP.

As for amantadine, my neuro put me on it in '97. I only took it for a
short time due to the vivid dreams I had. I didn't notice any change in
 my fatigue.

Not all meds affect us the same way, I guess.
