DJKick - great news. What version are you running, and on what OS ? Is
this the latest nightly, or proper release ?

7.3.0 is working fine for me, but I'd rather be on the latest build.

2011-07-15 Thread gingerneil

I've been having this same problem for a while now. I installed the
latest nightly on Windows Home Server yesterday, but this did not fix
it.

My music is generally purchased from iTunes, so tends to be AAC. I have
tried other builds from 7.5 upwards, but have the same issue. Tracks
skips randomly - some will play fine, others will skip within a few
seconds of the start, or half way through. I'll have a go with some
earlier ones having spotted the download page posted above for all
previous versions. I'm sure I didnt have this in 6.x - but I will try
from 7.3.4 and work my way downwards.

Both devices I am having issues with are SB2, one is wired and one is
wireless. Everything comes through fine when I play remotely using
stream.mp3 across the interwebs.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Tracks finishing early and skipping to next song

2011-07-13 Thread diego

Well there have been mentioned many problems and solutions here
already.

I think there is one common thing in all of them: The user who buys the
Touch expects, that this will work on his home wifi or lan network and
his music files, as his home network and music files have always worked
for computers with no problem.

But it turns out, that the squeezebox system is more sensitive that
pc's and other software among themselves

E. G.

- FLAC files that run normally on other software players would not
necessarily do so over the squeezebox network.

- Unltra short network interruptions would cause music interruptions,
what would not necessarily happen on software players on a pc.

... there might be more...

I think, the normal user should be made aware of all that and helped
with a simple trouble shooting guide! As it remains the promise of
Logitech: You buy the Touch, put it into your home network that works
otherwise, and the the Touch will just play your favorite music... No
mention there, that the Touch is more likely to run into problems than
other ways of playing music over the network. So at least, the paying
user should be helped with a simple solution, avoiding him to dig deep
into forums and sometimes cryptic technical answers.

Who takes care???

Cheers!

This is correct and normal. Your players can only be connected to one

If the players are connected to SBS on your PC then MySB.com is
correctly reporting them as not connected.

When a player loses its connection to the server (even a fraction of a
second) after a reconnect the next track is played.

You might activate remote access to your Touch, connect with SSH and
look into the /var/log/messages file.
Every disconnect and reconnect will appear in there, so have a look
after you experienced skipping again.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Tracks finishing early and skipping to next song

2011-07-09 Thread DJKick

The problem has nothing to do with wireless connections.
My setup is just a Touch and a HDD connected in USB. The HDD has its
own power supply. No connection to any network. Just using the internal
Squeezebox Server.
As said many times it is completely random, and not repeatable (meaning
if one end of a track is skipped, if you rewind it will probably pass
right the next time).
However it happens very often. It happens for me with Apple Lossless
and MP3. It has nothing to do with encoding since it is random and not
repeatable.

So there is a problem with the squeezebox for sure. At least with the
internal squeezebox server 7.5.4.
Since I don't know how to downgrade I am stuck with this buggy software
until the developers handle this bug.

It has probably something to do with the handling of the audio buffer
that bufferizes the next track while playing the current one. Sometimes
instead of buffering it just starts to play the next track (but that is
just a guess).

All SBS versions, past and present, are here:

Touch requires SBS 7.5 or later.

Connect your Touch to your newly downloaded SBS server on your PC or

Whether this will fix your problem I cannot say, but that is how you
can update or downgrade your player firmware to any applicable firmware

... here and elsewhere, where their users aka clients aka family feeders
are. Its not about the formality, where the questions are posted. Its
about clients who have spent money to buy a device, that comes along
with lots of promises. And nowhere on the box in the shop there was the
phrase count with counter-less bugs that may even skip your tracks...

However, for me, the tracks I (re-)encode myself, work. I have not
continued with extensive testing, but it appears that in my case, for
the time being, it's ok. However, this does still not mean that there
is no problem with the squeezebox. Just keep in mind, that Windows
codec over several Windows Players play those HDTracks flacs with no
interruption... and the flac decoder decodes them correctly (if not, I
would not be able to re-encode them...).

So... Squeezebox is the only player/decoder that does not understand
those flacs. So, wherever the fault is, it's for sure, there is
indeed room for improvement...

The developers are not still listening here, as said above, these skips
are still happening, irrespective on whether you are on 7.54 or 7.6,
Flac or Wav or whatever, it started happening when I upgraded to 7.54
and it is totally random and not the same tracks will skip, the
skipping will appear early or late, long or short tracks.
I downloaded 7.6 beta, not a bit of difference, just that in 7.6 I lost
all the artwork and I could not get it back...! So back to 7.54 at least
I could see the artwork.
You know this did not happen when I was on the original 7.2 whatever.
I spent 12 years working at a very high level in a IT company and with
teams of developers, I know how precious some become about the code they
write and the fact they know more than us. It is indeed a black art in
many respects. The one thing I did learn is that the end user should
never be ignored, they ultimately pay you wages, and invariably they
are not wrong!
Look how many people are reading these posts, if they are as frustrated
as me they are at the point of ditching the Touch and getting something
else where the software is a bit more robust.

were solved with reencoding the FLAC files. If 24/96, I've read that
compression no higher than 5 is best. Easy enough to do in bulk

Well I still think the problem does not appear to be so rare, at least
one gets quite a couple of views and answers to this thread... In my
opinion it's about time that we find out where the problem is.

Do you think the problem is more likely to be on the server or on the

Whatever your problem is, it is unusual/rare and almost certainly

2011-06-23 Thread diego

Hi everybody

For me, the problem occurs only on long tracks after playing at least
10 minutes, usually more. That explains largely, why the issue affects
only certain users: Who limits the use of the Touch to pop music will
be very rarely confronted to such long tracks.

However, it should be possible to decently listen to classical music
with the Touch. Right?

Testing is extremely annoying, as one has to listen those 20 minutes
entirely to be sure, if the issue occurs or not.

I use Touch with Firmware Version 7.5.4-r9408 and the Server Version
7.5.4 - r32171 on Windows XP. I listen mainly to FLAC files. One of my
favourite tracks, where the interruption almost always occurs, is a 22
minutes long 24bit / 96 khz FLAC file.

How can this be solved??? It is really dramatic to get cut in the
middle of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1!!!

THANKS FOR ANY USEFUL HELP

2011-06-23 Thread diego

... this thread has 3,491 views... and 53 replies... so it seems to
bother quite a number of users, in particular, if we consider that only
a few of us actually come to the forum to look for solutions!

Last time a Senior Member (yes thanks, at least Phil DID...) posted a
reply was a year ago!!

This tiny box is sold to us for nice money with the remark that it is
made to satisfy audiophile users, and it does not allow me to listen to
long tracks?

So please, could someone competent decently take care of the issue???

THANKS!!

I have encountered a similar issue as per this post
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88284

Only happens occasionally but having songs end abruptly and then next
selection starting is annoying. Only occurs in random mode, and only
during that playback session.
Using WinXP Pro as server OS. All connections wired. Sending PCM to
Touch from flac library. When playing same selection during playback of
full CD, no truncation.

info:

This isn't the end of the world but still shouldn't happen.
Any ideas why this is happening?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Tracks finishing early and skipping to next song

2011-06-15 Thread ajwaldo

I have just realized my problems were the fact that I had downloaded IE9
as an update on my vista equipped PC.
I was having trouble with IE9 with what I thought was a Java problem,
as the Java applets on some sites were not showing. In frustration I
disabled most of the Add-ons and reset the security to the default
setting. The IE9 then went much faster, displayed all the Javascript on
sites and then I realised tracks on the Squeezebox were not skipping...I
do not know whether this is just a coincidence or another problem we can
blame on Microsoft.
I hope this helps some people I may not be on the right track but all
the more knowledge we have to assimilate.

As with everyone else I am having this annoying problem, but I was not
having it until I went from pure wireless connection to an Apple

I did also load the latest software at the same time, which was 2 weeks

Incidently the sound is improved, better bass more dynamic overall.

2011-05-07 Thread Peetz

Facing the exact same problem here. Running SC 7.5.3 on a Qnap TS-112
and playing on a squeezebox 2 over wifi (84% wifi signal strength). It
seems like the SB loses connection to the file it's playing, as it
sometimes very shortly shows a message in the screen, saying can't
open file from:... When running a wifi test the signal is stable, so
this can't be the problem. Also I'm the onliest on wifi channel 11.

This issue is getting more and more frustrating as there doesn't seem
to be a clear solution for it! And I have no clue on what could be
causing the problem.

However, a gut-feeling is telling me it might be a file access right
issue. I'll do some tests on this and post the results.

Next option: trash and total rescan of the music library

2011-05-06 Thread DJKick

In fact I try what was just posted in the last message but it does not
solve the issue.
What is even worse is that it has nothing to do with the continuous
reading in fact because sometimes, it happens at the end of the album
:
Sometimes, the last track of an album stop before the end at around 30s
before the end. When reading again it does not happen. The problem is
intermittent. But the problem is not caused by the fact that there is a
subsequent track in the playlist. It can also happen at the end of a
playlist.

We need to force Logitech to solve this issue!
If anyone has the same issue please post in this thread !

2011-05-04 Thread valdemort

Hi,
I have exactly the same problem: running tinySBS with an USB attached
drive, sometimes songs skip to the next track 30-40 seconds before they
ends.
I noticed that when the problem arise it is costant: from that moment
any songs skips!
To solve the problem I disconnect the USB disk (using the discconnect
command before!) and reconnect the drive. Then wait until the scenning
for new tracks is completed and no other operation is in progress.
This way the problem disappears.

It apperas again usually every 3-5 weeks (no more!) and often after new
tracks are added, deleted or modified on the disk and listening is
started during the rescan process (you should be able to do this
but ).

I want also to hilight that I'm using a 2,5 inch disk 400Gb Western
Digital elements, usb powered, with thousands traks and 250Gb of other
kind of files (video, foto, data): one of the worst thing to do with
SBTouch but never had problems!

My version of the FW is also 7.5.4-r9408
I rebuilt the library today and it happened again. I'm using Tiny SBS
and a WD Elements 1.5 To USB HDD which is self powered.
Very annoying because I'm a fan of techno/house where the music is

johnnydarko: That's interesting. I upgraded to:

SBS 7.5.4 - r32171 (Windows)
Touch f/w 7.5.4-r9408

on 27/4/2011 (5 days ago as of the date of this post) and since then we
have not observed a single track skip. As part of the upgrade I cleared
and rebuilt the entire music library (no need to but I just did it
anyway).

This is not conclusive I would say but previously we would notice
several skips every day so there does seem to have been some
improvement. Whether it is teh new software, the library rebuild, the
combination of both or some other factor I cannot say.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Tracks finishing early and skipping to next song

2011-04-27 Thread ChrisJenkins

Was there ever any definitive resolution to this issue?

I have SBS 7.5.3.r31792 running on a high end Windows 7 64 bit system
serving up a library of around 6000 ALAC encoded file to two SB Touch
players (7.5.3-r9377). Network is wired GigaBit via a good switch over
CAT6. Network tested and no problems found. I have enabled native ALAC
streaming in SBS so that it does not transcode to MP3 when streaming to
the Touch.

Most of the time things are just fine but from time to time (several
times a day) some track that is playing will suddenly skip on to the
next track for no reason. Typically there may be 30 seconds or more
remaining on the track when it skips to the next track. There is no
pause when this happens. Crossfade is disabled on both Touch units. It
does not seem related to specific files since at other times a file
that 'skipped' will play fine all the way through. No messages in SBS
log at times when this skipping happens. This is when playing from a
playlist. Replaying the same playlist does not result in the same
behaviour; different tracks may skip (or not) and tracks that skipped
first time may play fine.

Any ideas how to diagnose this? it really is getting quite irritating.

Thanks.

I've also had this issue whereby the SBT stops playing the current track
with about 30 seconds to go and jumps to the next track.

I've got 30k files (mp3 and high bit rate wma) and am running with a
local USB drive. The problem is intermittent. I've never completed a
full scan successfully, it usually reports stopped due to a problem,
although once it got to 99% scanning the albumart. Memory usage is
reported as 76%.

I have to say I've had numerous problems trying to get the SBT working

this sort of thing for a living.

You certainly have had your share of odd issues. :(

There was just a recent thread in the Boom forum where someone had to
completely go through the entire Boom network setup every time they
unplugged their Boom and moved it to another part of their house,
connecting to the same WiFi network router. They even had to reenter
the SSID and encryption passphrase every time.

Why their setup did not allow the Boom to function properly and just
reconnect like most other Booms do is a mystery. My Boom always has,
just as my Touch has never had your issues. There are just too many
variables.

Let's hope all is well after your network reboot reconfiguration.
:)

wondered if it could have been down to the settings on the hd which is
set to go to sleep after 10 mins so I started timing the gaps incase it

think i have ever managed to get through a full album without it doing
it at least once. i have tried just playing an album from start to
finish and skips and also tried setting up playlist with ipeng and its
skips when the tracks are in a random order

most of my albums don't have artwork as its not pulled through from

itunes couldn't find it and this artwork is displayed but the problems
are not just assosicated with those albums with artwork

I updated my firmware and it seems to be happening sporadically at this
point. Some tracks it truncates, some it doesn't. I am also having an
issue with the the first track of any CD dropping out after about 10
seconds. I think this thing just doesn't buffer well enough to handle
ALAC files (not sure about other large files).

The Touch just doesn't seem to have the memory it should to pull of
what it is supposed to do. The fanboys on here can go on and on how
it's unfair that us USB connector users are badmouthing the product,
but plain and simple - this thing does not work well at all. I bought
the Touch so that I didn't have to have a computer running constantly
to use this type of device. That seems to be the only way this works
as it should.

I have the problem, too, but with MP3-files.
I have a library of just below 20K-MP3-files on an external USB-HDD

enough spare space for the library.
I haven't managed to get a full scan yet (always cancels with a

stopping for no (obvious) reason (stopping playback) and so forth.
I can say that I managed to play a full album like two times - apart
from that, it was a very unpleasant experience until now. Internet

I've had this issue as well. I've found it somewhat discouraging to be
honest. I've been using my Touch mostly with Rhapsody and internet
radio. I didn't seem to have a problem when running SBS off my MacBook
Pro, just directly USB connection to the Touch. People keep posting
links to the update SBS software, but these are all for running off a
computer/server, not Touch SBS software from what I can tell.

Any issues I've had with Rhapsody, I would blame on Rhapsody. Using
the Touch interface has less issues than streaming it on my MacBook
Pro.

The builtin server is part of the Touch firmware. So in order to get a
new version of the builtin server you have to get a new firmware
package for the Touch. Unfortunately I have not found a 7.5.2 Touch
firmware. There is 7.5.1 and 7.6. There is a directory for 7.5.2
firmware, but what is in there is 7.5.1. So if you want to try
something new it looks like you have to go with 7.6.

There are two ways to get new Touch firmware:

If you have an external server on your network, upgrade it, then point
the Touch at this server and the Touch will automatically upgrade its
firmware (including the builtin server) to that version. At this point
you don't need the external server anymore, you can now run off the
upgraded internal server.
OR
Go to http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.6.0/ (for 7.6)
download fab4.bin. Put it on a USB stick or SD card. Unplug the Touch.
Insert the USB stick or SD Card. Power up the Touch. After its booted
go to the update firmware menu and you should now have a Update from
media entry. Select that and it will install the firmware from the USB
or SD. It will reboot as part of the update process. At that point eject
the media, unplug it. Plug in the USB disk. You should now be running
the new version of the server.

I beg to differ: most do not have this problem. Many are using the
TOUCH with attached USB drive and playing just fine. In trying to
diagnose this problem, it would be useful for the OP to mention the
types of files he is trying to play (FLAC, mp3, ALAC, etc.) and the

The OP is using Touch with USB drive, so he is most likely using TinySC
so Windows Whatever shouldn't matter.

To the OP, What brand of USB drive are you using? What size is the
drive? How much free space is left on the drive? Is it USB powered or
External powered? Do you have any irregularly large album art (over
600x600)? Answers to these specific questions might help with
troubleshooting.

I know, it was my bug. No, I haven't tried another OS. One poster
indicated use of XP. I did not prove conclusively what was causing the
issue, only that it started for me after my Win XP - Win 7 64 change.
It appeared exacerbated by running a traceroute utility (pingplotter),
as over time network stack errors were occurring. I haven't used the
utility in a long while now, and yet playback problems have continued.

If someone at Logitech is really interested in investigating this, I'll

If it only happens on ALAC tracks it could be a bug in the built-in ALAC

aha. there does seem to be more problems with playing ALAC, m4a, mp4,

This has been a known problem since day 1. Do a search. Some have had
luck when connecting a HDD to the Touch, but most have the same problem
you do. There are no known fixes at this point.
