shaft locks into the locking tool.
Oil floats and makes a slimy mess. Just filthy is very old coolant.
I wouldn't pull the head unless you get cold pressure, use coolant, or
collect black oil in the coolant tank.

I'd say that $500.00 is high for a completely disassembled 80's BMW, with
exception of the R90S. Also, some of the /7's suffered from receding valve
problems. Te valve seats were too soft.

Very simply, wiggle, pry etc to see if there is looseness in the joint.
However, if you have to ask the question,
you may be better advised to take it to a shop and have them check and advise.
