I thiink you've managed to confuse your partition scheme. Typically, the
best way to prepare a linux drive, especially for the distros you mention,
is to have the following partitions:

The / and /home directories need
I'm afraid I'm new to the whole thing and don't understand the use of
the /home partition. I'm not using any networked stuff, I just want to
allow myself to run linux there will only be 1/2 users at most. So what
should I store in /home rather than /?
I'm afraid I wasn't to clear about grub.
as for the /home stuff as I am the sole user of this system what do I
stand to gain from installing stuff to /home rather than /usr?
For personal configuration files, and depending on the application, if you
have a separate /home partition, you can remove a linux / partition,
reinstall another
HII need some help i have been using linux mandrake 6.1 for some
time now but i am still not so great at the command line things like
chmod and stuff. Here is the problem, i have been dialing out as root
and it is the family computer. I use it to use the net in my room using

Before, I was able to install StarOffice from Myself user under the
directory home/Myself/Office51/ and could use it with root and Myself but

When you set up your Linux OS, it should have found your ethernet
card, and it should have asked you if you have DHCP, which practically
everybody has. You say yes, or whatever the correct answer is, and
the installer will do the rest for you. Perhaps your ethernet card is

(my first posting. I've just installed Mandrake 7.1 on a Dell Pentium
Laptop with a 1 gig partition. Everything went well the second time
(first time i tried a windows install with not enough free space and I
lost everything on my computer!). Therefore three days later I am

Has anyone successfully installed an Intel PRO/DSL 2100 modem on their linux system?
I got it as part of a DSL package from US West (now Qwest), our local telephone
company. It works great in Windows 98, but there are no Linux drivers that I can
find. Mandrake Linux does not find it when
