It's true, it wouldn't matter for that use, but if it

one end might think it was a crossover cable, not
checking the other end.
And if it was just put together in any old order, a

regular (non-crossover and correctly constructed)
ethernet cable.

There's something to be said for consistency...though

Re: Looking for an Airport Card

I did some experiment on older Macs:
please have a look at:
homepage.mac.com/bengi
You'll learn something on WiFi PC cards, including a link to a great
site, and how to flash a 40 bit wep (silver) card to 128 bit wep
(gold)!

If you need WPA you must look for a card bus WiFi card which will
work on any PowerBook from the Wallstreet, with the right software.

Re: Ethernet cable

2005-04-13 Thread Amanda Ward
Hi Tom,

There are guidelines for wiring the connectors. This link (grabbed at
random) covers some of it.

http://www.ertyu.org/~steven_nikkel/ethernetcables.html

The important thing to remember is... for a standard, straight through cable
both connectors must be wired in the exact same order. Keeping the colors
straight is nice, but not required. Just make sure pin 1 is wired to pin 1,
pin 2 to pin 2 and so on.

The crossover cable (direct connect, computer to computer) is a different
animal altogether and I won't pretend to remember how that works. I've made
just one of them in over 15 years.

As for apps, unless you want to go Pro with Dreamweaver, Golive or

there is a ghosting effect going on at the same time. The whole computer is

will the Apple card work with non-apple base stations? I can find like,

Orinoco Silver or Gold?

802.11b PC Card for my Lombard OS 9.1...because airport won't work and I am

no. the pismo is the first one that used the internal airport card, i
fitted my aunt's lombard with a belkin card on the pc slot. it only
 works in os X.

Clark Martin's email said
For a Lombard you will need a PC Card. Orinoco Silver or Gold,
(non-CardBus) will do. There are others. The Orinoco cards at least
will work with Airport software under OS 9.

The Gold version antenna includes a built-in connector for an external Range
Extender Antenna which improves performance locations where it is difficult
 to 'see' an Access Point.

but will it fit my PC slot physically, and run with os 9.1? I assume it
comes with drivers.

Orinoco Silver 802.11b PC Card
Product Description
From the Manufacturer
The ORiNOCO 11b Client PC Card can be used anywhere to connect to 802.11b
Wi-Fi networks. The card provides 11 MBit/s operation in the 2.4 GHz
license-free frequency band. With superior radio performance and resilience
to radio interference, ORiNOCO has been proven to give the best 802.11b
range and throughput in the industry. The card also supports 802.11d global
roaming to simplify connecting at facilities world-wide. Offered in Silver
and Gold versions, the card is equipped with a choice of security levels to
protect your data: Silver with a 64-bit WEP key, or Gold with user
selectable 64- and 128-bit WEP keys. Both versions support ORiNOCO's WEP+
weak key Initialization Vector suppression technology to make the cards more
robust against security attacks. Both versions are upgradeable to Wi-Fi
Protected Access (WPA). Both Gold and Silver versions of the card are
furnished with a streamlined form factor and short antenna which makes it
easier to work in crowded spaces. The Gold version antenna includes a
built-in connector for an external Range Extender Antenna which improves
performance locations where it is difficult to 'see' an Access Point.

The hardware works quite well with Linux, The Mac, and Win2K, but the
product has been bounced around so much since Lucent's original release,
finding current drivers and documentation is a major undertaking.
Tech-support from its current owner doesn't respond to inquiries, and the
software for configuration suffers in comparison to other vendors, such as
Apple.

If you're into mucking around the web or newsgroups, you can get help- once
you get it to work, it does perform quite well.

Re: Apple laserwriter 4/600ps Pismo? or newer powerbook?

The adapters are pricy, so
I think looking for a new printer is the way to go,
But it's just a shame to give up this laserprinter
that has nothing wrong with it!
Thanks to everyone for info on this!
Kim
Oups! After reading my reply, I realize that you might not even be able to
connect the printer to your Pismo. Since I think this printer has only
serial connection, I'm thinking that you might not even be able to use it
with your Pismo. Sure, you could buy a Serial-to-USB adapter, but I'm not
sure this old printer would be worth the cost and the trouble to get it
hooked to your Pismo. FYI, I found a used LaserWriter 16/600PS on eBay a few
months ago for $80. This printer has built-in Ethernet (actually, it has a
FriendlyNet kind of connector, so you need a FriendlyNet adaptor, also
available for about $5 on eBay), and the printer is fully supported under OS
X. There is no need to share it from one computer since the printer is
always available on the network. Other printers with some kind of Ethernet
connection would work as well.

Re: battery power on wifi, G3 clamshell

2005-04-13 Thread Matthew Faulds
After some initial problems with batteries we bought a new battery for 466
clamshell ibook and we get somewhere around 4- 4 1/2 hours use with airport.
If watching a DVD you get full film plus about an hour. That is running
latest version of Panther mind you. Watch out for funny battery problems
when updating OS!

I reckon it's worth getting a new battery just for the lack of hassle. Ours
is BTI (Battery Tech)

My Reply follows quote. On 08/04/2005 22:23 [EMAIL PROTECTED] said:
Okay, I got the airport card for my clamshell, love it to death and
enjoy being completely wire-free. However I noticed with the airport
card, the battery life is seriously diminished. If I plan on using it
without the power cord for any reason for a long time, I'll turn the
screen brightness down and turn the sound off. that doesn't seem to
make a huge difference, but it makes a little bit of one. It says it
will work for like close to 2 hours. Does the battery need replacing
or is this average for an older laptop? I noticed it gets down to a
certain level with the battery displaying in red and then *boom* it
shuts down and goes into sleep mode til I plug it back in.

Any solutions or ideas? Should I just get a new battery?

Andrea~

Sounds pretty normal to me. Two hours with wireless seems good. Better
than I get with my Blueberry! A new battery may help, but I don't think
you will get 3 hours from a new battery while wireless.

The later clamshell iBooks had 8MB VRAM and an ATI Rage Mobility 128 (AGP

The Pismo had 8MB and ATI Rage Mobility 128.

Two questions (sort of OT)

2005-04-13 Thread Brian
My first is in regards to my iPod. It has lately acquired a very
audible whirring noise. Not to be read as loud, but it is louder than
when I first bought it last summer. I posted this to the apple forums
but got little help on the issue there. One guy assumed i was using a
PC, despite the fact that my iBook was listed on my post as the
computer I used, and recommended I defragment the iPod, but have found
no material regarding this in the iPod help files or on the apple site.
Is this possible? Is this likely to be the problem? Should I just
ignore it? Is it even a problem?
Second is the issue of USB jump drives. The one I had was recently
stolen, so I lost it and all of the work, school and personal data I
had saved on it. I will be buying a new jump drive soon, so I thought
this: I can make my iBook next to unusable to anyone who decides to
try to walk off with it, can i do the same with a USB jump drive? All
I mean is, can I password protect the entire thing so that any person
who decides to take it for a walk cannot access ay of the files on it,
and can't format it as well?
TiA,
Brian

I would say that the noise coming out of your iPod is probably the hard
drive. That's the only component that has moving parts in the iPod.

As for your 2nd question, I don't know how you can protect a jump drive.
I'm assuming that by jump drive, you mean some kind of USB flash memory

Sister's Ibook, Coffe, and fault...

2005-04-13 Thread Jason
So my sister buys an Ibook off me that has been with me for three
years, with no issues, and two hours later, spills coffee all over it.
She says the only problem is a few keys were not working, and a hissing
noise.. few days later, it wont charge Is this probly a fried power
board, as I assume, or could it be something else.
BTW, the power cord is a replacement, but has had no problems for over
a year before this..
what do you think?

Re: Looking for an Airport Card

2005-04-13 Thread Kenneth Vann

Great. Tks. I want to experiment. I have a Wallstreet running 10.2.8.
I have a hunch that the Belkin card which works in your Aunt's Lombard
might work in a Wallstreet. Also I would appreciate what card version
(located on the bottom of the card e.g. VER.1101) and driver were used
 (Airport vX.XX or other).
 dklj

Belkin has changed the chip set in the wireless 802.11g card. The newer
card (released about a year ago) does not work with the Airport Software.
You need software from Ralink Technology Inc.

Ralink Technology has drivers for the PC/PCI/USB wireless adaptors that use
their RT2500 Chip Set. Supports OS X.

Some PCI/PCMCIA cards that use Ralink Chipset RT2500 are:

* Asus WL-107g [RAlink Chipset] Cardbus Card
* MSI WIFI 802.11g PCI Ralink chipset MSI [PC54G2]
* MSI WIFI 802.11g PCMCIA Ralink chipset MSI [CB54G2]
* E-Tech Wireless 54Mbps PCI card Model: WGPI02 RT2500 Chipset
* E-Tech Wireless 54 Mbps PCMCIA adapter Model: WGPC02 RT2500 Chipset
* ALFA AWPC036 802.11g PC Card Ralink chipsets
* A-Link WL54H Chipset: RaLink RT2500 (rev 01)

Link to the drivers download page on my Wireless FAQ site.

Also at bottom of page, link to vendors whos 802.11g card works with
Airport Software under OSX.

Re: Airport Question

2005-04-13 Thread Muddle Man
Is true that PC card wireless cards are cheaper and
easier to find than Airport cards. I too have an
Airport in my iBook G3 900.

It's important to understand that the protocol used to
communicate over a network is TCP/IP and wireless
802.11b/g. These protocols are not platform specific.

To give you an idea, let's use my home network as an
example. I have a cable modem, Linksys Wireless B
router, two Mac desktops running wired to the router;
one iBook with Airport, and one Win XP laptop with a
Linksys wireless B PC card. The standard of
communications wirelessly is 802.11b. The router
doesn't care if it's an iBook running OS X or Win XP
with any wireless PC card.

iBooks don't have a PC card slot, so a PC card
wireless card is not an option. There are very few PC
cards that do work with Macs. They only work with
PowerBooks since they have PC card slots in them.

I prefer Linksys over D-link for quality and trouble
free usage. When you get the router don't bother
running any install programs (probably won't have an
installer for Mac anyway) since they are not needed.
Each router has a way for the router to be accessed
through a web page interface. You'll see directions
for that in the manual. This is important because you
will want to lock down your wireless network with a
WEP to keep folks from using your wireless signal to
surf w/o your knowledge.

Mainstreet/Lombard conundrum

2005-04-13 Thread Keith Johnson
I have a Mainstreet and a Lombard, both in good shape. I want to
upgrade one of them for everyday use until I can afford a new laptop.

I have 2 uses other than normal stuff:
1. I have an ap that uses a 2nd monitor (or TV) for general use by an
audience. If you *must* know, it's a karaoke ap. Say what you will ;)
It also uses an external firewire hard drive. I have a Newer Firewire
cardbus card.

2. I want to be able to watch DVDs when I take the train across country.

I can upgrade the Lombard's cpu by sending it in.
I can upgrade the Mainstreet's cpu by purchasing an upgrade and
installing it myself.

I'm not even sure if you can upgrade a Mainstreet to watch DVDs, or if
they make an internal (slide-in) DVD drive for them.

Suggestions, thoughts?

The clicking/scratching would be the heads moving back and forth seeking the

environment and when you are looking for it. I suspect it is nothing to
worry about.

As for your jump drive - having lost one myself (actually I suspect it was
stolen by a student hoping to find test information) - I simply created an
encrypted disk image and put it on the drive. Just make it a wee bit smaller
than the drive. Sure, it can be formatted but at least the scum can't access
my data. If you want more protection, on Engadget I saw a jump drive with
biometric security...a bit overkill unless you work for SD 6.

I am not sure where to draw a line but I think that if your PowerBook
supports Core Image, things can get amazingly faster. I have a 17 at 1.5GHz
and I did notice a significant speed increase in various operations. Most
notably in the Finder (finally!) and Safari 2.0 is also much faster. There
are some pages that display in less than a second! Menus and other widgets
are quite faster.

However, I am not sure to what extent your GPU supporting Core Image can

Re: Tiger Release

2005-04-13 Thread Andrew F.
The Apple site goes into very little detail on which GPUs give full support.
I have a brand-new PowerBook 12 (64MB nVidia 5200) so I'm guessing it is
fully supported, but my friend has an 800MHz iBook G4 and I don't know
whether I should recommend the update for her or not. Also, my 1GHz
Sawtooth has a 32MB GeForce MX pulled out of a QuickSilver, this is an
older, though Quartz Extreme capable card. Will it be supported under Core
Image, and if not, is it still worthwhile from a performance viewpoint to
install Tiger on that machine?

get my powerbook hooked up to it wirelessly. I had it and my BW hooked

got DSL and hooked my BW to it, my wireless now doesnt want to play
nice. It is a Netgear router and a Speedstream DSL modem, if that
helps.

TIA
Bill
---
Hmmm. I would have expected that you would have:

 - Connected the router to the DSL modem
 - Connected the power supply to the modem
 - Connected the power supply to the router

The result _should_ have been that the modem got its IP from the
central switch, the router would have gotten an address from the
modem, and then the router would have served addresses to client
machines.

Did you get setup instructions with your DSL service?

It may be that you will have to direct connect to the router via
ethernet cable to configure it (assuming a browser interface?).

I did this on my wife's MDD G4. There was a control
strip module causing Classic to crash. I was shocked
when I booted off the OS 9 CD and could not see the
internal hard drive. No need to panic. It's just
because the OS 9 drivers were not installed during the
factory format...

I'd like to point out that some of the earliest
 models claimed by Apple
to be OS X boot only, can boot with the OS 9 CD that
 came with the early
iMac flatpanels. I only tried this on one machine,
 which I think was a

 this was some time

how well it would have worked with everything in the
 long run.
 Anyone else have tried this?

Re: Mainstreet/Lombard conundrum

2005-04-13 Thread Malcolm Cornelius

If I understood the question I could offer a suggestion.

Both machines run the FW HD without upgrade.

Both machines run DVD with the DVD drive and a hardware Decoder.

Both machines can be upgraded to be better.

What's the issue ?

Mine did that. Very un-nerving experience. Find out if
your serial number matches the range in this kb
 article.

They all do.

It covers all G3s.

If so, call Apple and arrange a dispatch.
They will send you a box via DHL overnight. You box it
up and send it off. It'll be back inside three days.
And you'll get a new logic board to boot.

Only if they agree it is the video chip at fault and there is no other
issue.

AND you are not in UK.

We have to take ours to a dealer.

Who may 9 weeks later tell you that you have a non-repairable fault. Which
is in fact a screen fault they caused, fixed by reseating the data cable in
the LCD - or I could have accepted their 750 USD repair quote.

Simple, easy to read with plenty of info. Don't be

Also, a good site to check out the skinny on the web

Most free GUI builders leave something to be desired.
I'd try the ones folks mentioned. They'd be good for
cutting your teeth on HTML. Try and get a GUI page
builder were you can view the pages source code so you
can get a feel for the code. Mozilla's composer will
let you do that.

Re: Apple laserwriter 4/600ps Pismo? or newer powerbook?

Possibly it would be less expensive to purchase an older Mac to run the
printer off of and then network it to your newer Macs.

Re: Mainstreet/Lombard conundrum

I have a Mainstreet and a Lombard, both in good shape. I want to

2. I want to be able to watch DVDs when I take the train across
country.

If I understood the question I could offer a suggestion.
Both machines run the FW HD without upgrade.
Neither of them have built-in FW. I have a FW cardbus card that says
minimum 300 MHz cpu, so with the upgrade, no problem there.
Both machines run DVD with the DVD drive and a hardware Decoder.
Can they? Are you sure of this? I'm talking about an internal DVD
drive. I didn't know one was made for the mainstreet/wallstreet.
Both machines can be upgraded to be better.
What's the issue ?
Well, price, for one. You neglected to mention the need for the
external video. The other response mentioned the vid card in the
Lombard. I know there's some (expensive) cardbus video card things. The
Mianstreet has two cardbus slots. No USB though.

I'd prefer to use Panther (or even Tiger), but I own Jaguar as well.

Older Macs can run LocalTalk Bridge, a free download from Apple. As the
title indicates, it will bridge between LocalTalk (the 4/600) and
ethernet. An old Powerbook 520 would be great for that purpose.

Re: web page design

2005-04-13 Thread Claire Hart
Hi. I want to design a small web site. A few pics, some links, not too
much. Can you suggest a helpful book to read first? And a good
application to use? Thanks.
nVU is a free gui web page program, based on the Mozilla engine, and
more robust than Composer.

Last summer I was in the Apple store in Austin, TX, and asked the same
question. They suggested Freeway Express, the $99 lite version of
Freeway Pro. I bought it and I love it. You never have to handle code
with this software if you don't want to; in fact, I still don't know
how to use code, and I've maintained a fairly active website for a
local youth sports program since last September with this software.
You can actually start with a very simple site, and then as you become
more familiar with the software, you find that you can do quite a bit
with it. Of course, should your interest and ability grow, you can
always upgrade to Freeway Pro. I am also a member of a very active
Freeway User Group that includes some very knowledgeable professionals
in its membership.

Hopes that helps,
Claire

One other thought. I use 123ehost for web hosting, and I think they
are about to roll out another couple of features, including 1000
website templates plus possibly the ability to create your website from
their website without additional software. Unfortunately I've already
deleted the email announcing upcoming features. All that to say that
something like this might be an option.
