 Nothing.

Ended up connecting the ATX supply to its original bad
motherboard in the computer that my neighbor gave me (the bad
motherboard is why he gave it to me). There it worked.
Hmmm ... Disconnected it and jumpered pins 14 and 15 on the
20-pin ATX connector and it worked, too.

I put together a couple load resistors and a switch so I can
test supplies without motherboards attached. Not foolproof, but
low risk to complex motherboards.

So, I figured, something in the mini-ITX computer is keeping
the power supply from starting. I jumpered pins 14 and 15 with
a paper clip and tried the two disks and DVD-ROM drive one at
a time. One of the disks kept the supply from starting.
 Scratch one disk.

So I connected up the mini-ITX motherboard and booted the
computer. Motherboard is still alive. Good.

Put in a Windows install CD.

Tsk, tsk.

Tried a Linux install CD and that booted just fine. (Boy I
hate Windows.) But I did want to use Windows on this computer
(which will NOT connect to the network!).

Now your doing better. Why not use a virtual machine for those
situations where MS Win is required?

Disconnected the IDE cable to the dead disk and tried again.
No change. Disconnected the IDE cable to the second disk and
connected a disk from the neighbor's dead computer. It boots
the Windows install disk just fine. Hmmm ... Scratch two disks.

But the dying power supply killed two disks. I do have the
ones from the neighbor's dead computer, but I'm still not
happy about the performance of the VIA Sereniti's power supply.

Wow. I've never seen a power supply kill harddrives. Quite
conceivable, voltage goes up and poof!

Use two supplies?

Years ago I had a HP desktop with some weird form factor power
supply. I wanted more harddrives on it than the supply could
support, so I tagged an ATX onto the case and supplied the
drives from the 'external' supply and the rest of the machine
from the internal. Had to be careful to power up and down in the
correct order. Otherwise worked well for over a year.

Rich - you're quite lucky to live so you can enjoy those folks. My
wife, fluent in Italian, Spanish, and dangerous with French, can't speak
a word of Southern beyond ya'll. I often have to interpret for her
with locals who speak Southern, but I have not yet spoken to anyone who
replied in Gullah.

We have seen a Gullah translation of the bible, which is available
locally. Difficult but possible to read, I'm sure that I wouldn't
understand that language spoken very well.

Yes they are very much around, there are some folks who live in a shack
down a little dirt road across the road from me who speak only Gullah,
no English. Most of the Gullah folk speak passable English, especially
the younger kids, and can flip back and forth (the kids at the grocery
stores are interesting to observe, as you did). The older ones are
sometimes quite hard to understand if you can at all.

Many of the folks on Kiawah would rather not to hear, see, or have any
contact with these folks who have lived here by choice or circumstance
for hundreds of years. It is sad, they are very nice people with lots
of history and culture.

This afternoon an older white man introduced himself as gullah, and
spoke with a very thick accent. Some white folks who grew up in the
community, especially the older ones, also can flip back and forth, and
have very distinct accents. Another neighbor across the road, who has a
truck farm http://www.rosebankfarms.com/ , is in his 70s and was born
and grew up right here, can flip back and forth, goes to the black
church next door to me and has forever I guess. He is quite a
character.

This winter my idle speed after a cold start seems to be a little too
low. The whole car shakes at idle on a cold morning. With just a
slight throttle, maybe an additional 50 RPM or so, everything is normal.

I did replace my motor mounts last fall, could this have altered the
idle speed at all, i.e. if the motor is now sitting a little higher on
the new mounts could the accelerator linkage need some adjustment?

Once the engine has warmed up, the shaking at idle is much reduced.

I read about Sonax wheel cleaner in the latest 'Star' magazine, so I

I tried to find just a bottle of the cleaner locally, then on the
internet, but finally decided to get a 'kit' with several other Sonax
products, seemed a better value once shipping was calculated:

http://www.shophsg.com/sonaxcck.html

Result: It does seem to work much much better than just soap/water, but
I had to use a tooth brush to get all the brake dust out of the fifteen
holes on the rims of my '87 wagon. On some parts of the rim, it did
clean really well with just one cycle of wet wheel / spray on cleaner /
rinse off wheel. Note that I started with REALLY crusty rims, which
probably haven't been washed in a couple months. I'll wait a few weeks
and try again to see if it works better when used in a more routine
manner.

[MBZ] Car detailing

Rich mentioned it not being pleasant enough to be working on cars lately. That
got me thinking about working on my car this weekend. IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE 52
DEGREES! I am very excited about sun and warm temperatures. This winter seems
to have last forever. I know its been the normal amount of time, but it just
feels like we haven't had a warm day in SO long. Now, I'm sure some of you in
the warmer climates are thinking that 52 doesn't sound all that great, but it
has been bad here for a long time.

So, here's my question. I just got this Cadillac and I always have to spend
time detailing and cleaning whatever car I have just gotten. It drives me
crazy not having a clean car. Has anyone used the clay for the paint. I
think I did this once on a previous car, but it was a long time ago. The car
has very nice paint, but since it was sitting for so long, I am thinking using
the clay would be a good idea before waxing it. Plus, I get to spend some time
outside soaking up the sun!

Re: [MBZ] Car detailing

2010-02-12 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
I have used detailing clay, and it is great for removing any stuff that
doesn't come off with soap and water. Don't drop your clay on the
ground - it immediately picks up rocks etc. which obviously will scratch
your car, so you through it away at that point. Labor intensive to
'clay' an entire car, so I'd recommend that you only do it where you can
either see or feel stuff that won't wash off. I bought a $15 clay kit
at Pep Boys that had special clay lubricant in a spray bottle, but I
suspect that car soap and water, mixed a little on the soapy side, will
work just fine.

I have found that clay works GREAT on my white car which really shows
dirt.

Rich mentioned it not being pleasant enough to be working on cars
lately. That got me thinking about working on my car this weekend. IT
IS SUPPOSED TO BE 52 DEGREES! I am very excited about sun and warm
temperatures. This winter seems to have last forever. I know its been
the normal amount of time, but it just feels like we haven't had a warm
day in SO long. Now, I'm sure some of you in the warmer climates are
thinking that 52 doesn't sound all that great, but it has been bad here
for a long time.

So, here's my question. I just got this Cadillac and I always have to
spend time detailing and cleaning whatever car I have just gotten. It
drives me crazy not having a clean car. Has anyone used the clay for
the paint. I think I did this once on a previous car, but it was a long
time ago. The car has very nice paint, but since it was sitting for so
long, I am thinking using the clay would be a good idea before waxing
it. Plus, I get to spend some time outside soaking up the sun!

Depends on which injection pump you have. Procedure 07.1-100 shows
screw stop for MW pump and 5mm set screw with locking nut (at back of
pump, near top) for M/RSF pump (which I think is what you have). Same
procedure also says to check and adjust all the linkages first. I've
already deleted the original post, so send me you email address again
and I'll send you a copy of the procedure.

Even my '87 has this idle speed adjuster.

The real winter WX problem (at least around northern NC) is the wet stuff
that freezes to trees, phone lines, etc. and the resulting weight can bring
them down. The dry powdery stuff of two weeks back was deep but not a
problem -- except for those who had to (or chose to) get on the road. Our
road got plowed after three days and I think the plow did more damage than
all those cars and trucks driving with one wheel off the road.

The last time that I recall having so much snow that we could not move about

snow shoes in the garage at the lake
so the next summer I bought them home. They have now hung in my garage for
almost 23 years and I have yet to use
them. I wonder if they would fall apart if I did. The bindings are no doubt so
stiff that they would not be much
good. Not sure about the webbing which is leather that has been varnished. They
may be junk so I should check and
throw them out if they could not be used. I am not hanging them on the wall for
decoration. Don't know if they
still do, but back when they were new, they did not smell all that nice.

Donald - check out my detailing page on my Web site at www.penoff.com

It's mainly on the W123 chassis, but there are some other hints that are pretty
general.

As for the clay, by all means, do it. You'll be amazed at how much cruft you
get out of the finish. It's not something you have to do often, maybe once a
year, but it does make a big difference.

One note about the various kits you'll see for automotive clay:

Buy the cheapest one you can find, and don't buy additional wetting agent -
make your own. Take a spray bottle full of clean water and put a couple of
drops of dishwashing detergent in it, and it will do the same thing the bottle
that came with the clay does.

When you're done, put the clay in a freezer style ZipLoc and squeeze all the
air out of it, and you'll be able to use the clay again.

I've never been snowed in so badly we couldn't get out. There have been cases
where normal people shouldn't be out but the idiots will doubtless go out to

When we had the ice storm in '08 my in-laws went riding around to get more
information and complained that all the utility crews were in the way. When
I suggested maybe my in-laws were the ones in the way they were flabbergasted.
I also asked what they thought they needed for information, there had been an
ice storm, the power was out and it would be back on when its on, what else do
you need to know?

BTW snowshoes don't go bad the leather lacing is raw hide and as long as
the mice haven't eaten it it'll be fine with a new coat of varnish or
polyurethane. They sell replacement bindings. If you don't want yours send 'em
here. I haven't had any since mine were stolen 5 or 6 years ago. Its a low
thing to steal a guy's snowshoes... I should check the area pawn shops, they've
got my name on them...

Re: [MBZ] PANIC! BAD weather forecast!!!!

2010-02-12 Thread R A Bennell
The problem that we have with the powdery stuff is that here on the prairies,
it is too open and the wind blows it
around to much. No visiblity and the road gets polished so it is slippery.

We keep getting little bits of snow so my sidewalk is a mess etc. If you don't
get it cleared off before people
walk on it, then you basically cannot get it cleared off. We have an inch or so
of ice and snow built up on the
concrete that will be there for a while.

The other problem I get is that my garage faces east west and the sun melts the
snow off of the south side. It then
fills my eavestrough with ice and makes a big icy mess a the downspout end. The
water splashes onto the stucco and
freezes and causes the stucco to fall apart.

I need to come up with some better solution to the problem but I am not sure
what it is. I have considered building
a dormer on that side of the garage roof in an attempt to change the melt
characteristics. It also ruins the
shingles as there is a constant freeze and thaw cycle on the south side of the
roof. If you don't think solar
energy works, come and look at my garage. It can be minus 20 but at high noon
with the sun shining, the snow will
be melting off of the south side of my garage. Of couse, as soon as the water
runs down to where it is shadowed by
the neighbor's garage, it re-freezes.

I get a similar scenario on my house as the snow melts on the roof (later once
it warms up more) and runs into the
trough and down the downpipe but then freezes as it is in the shadow between my
house and the one to the south of
us. Then the downpipe freezes and bursts and the water runs down the stucco and
damages it. I guess I need the
industrial style downpipes that are open to the outside but they would look odd
on the house.

2010-02-12 Thread LWB250
Who was the Coastie that was bemoaning the decommissioning of the LORAN system?

I ask because I just talked to the guys at the LORAN site in Dana, Indiana. We
service the generators that back up the site.

They turn off the transmitter on Monday. The site is being mothballed and
turned over to the local government after the USCG gets their toys out of it.

The problem that we have with the
powdery stuff is that here on the prairies, it is too open
 and the wind blows it
around to much. No visiblity and the road gets polished so
 it is slippery.

We keep getting little bits of snow so my sidewalk is a
mess  etc. If you don't get it cleared off before
 people
walk on it, then you basically cannot get it cleared off.
We have an inch or so of ice and snow built up on the
concrete that will be there for a while.

The other problem I get is that my garage faces east west
and the sun melts the snow off of the south side. It then
fills my eavestrough with ice and makes a big icy mess a
the downspout end. The water splashes onto the stucco and
freezes and causes the stucco to fall apart.

I need to come up with some better solution to the problem
but I am not sure what it is. I have considered building
a dormer on that side of the garage roof in an attempt to
change the melt characteristics. It also ruins the
shingles as there is a constant freeze and thaw cycle on
the south side of the roof. If you don't think solar
energy works, come and look at my garage. It can be minus
20 but at high noon with the sun shining, the snow will
be melting off of the south side of my garage. Of couse, as
soon as the water runs down to where it is shadowed by
 the neighbor's garage, it re-freezes.

I get a similar scenario on my house as the snow melts on
the roof (later once it warms up more) and runs into the
trough and down the downpipe but then freezes as it is in
the shadow between my house and the one to the south of
us. Then the downpipe freezes and bursts and the water runs
down the stucco and damages it. I guess I need the
industrial style downpipes that are open to the outside but
they would look odd on the house.

Re: [MBZ] PANIC! BAD weather forecast!!!!

2010-02-12 Thread R A Bennell
I can only recall 2 times in my lifetime when we were totally buried in snow
and could not move about for a bit.
The one I related earlier in I think 1986 and another in March of 1966. We had
another in April 1997 but we were in
Grand Forks ND that weekend and could not get home. We were supposed to go home
on Sunday but did not get there
until Tuesday if I recall correctly. In ND it was mostly an ice storm that left
the roads covered with close to an
inch of ice. Further north in Canada it was snow. We listened to the radio and
heard that Winnipeg was buried and
the buses had stopped running etc. We thought that when we got home, we would
have to leave the Suburban out at the
major street and walk in to the house. We were happy to find out that they had
already ploughed out our front
street and back lane. My mother's car was in our garage and she wanted to go
home so we had to dig our way into and
out of the garage. The snow was half way up the pedestrian door and hard enough
to stand on. I had to crouch down
and jump into the garage to get shovels. We could have built igloos of it as we
were cutting out chunks of snow
when we tried to shovel it away.

The good thing about snow that time of year is that it does not last, even this
far north. It was all gone in a few
days. Of course that has issues too.

The weekend that we were stuck in Grand Forks that I referred to above, was
about a week before they were almost
totally flooded. The main north south highway was closed for a month or more
shortly after we got home.

I've never been snowed in so badly we couldn't get out. There have been cases
where normal people shouldn't be out
but the idiots will doubtless go out to run the road.

When we had the ice storm in '08 my in-laws went riding around to get more
information and complained that all
the utility crews were in the way. When I suggested maybe my in-laws were the
ones in the way they were
flabbergasted. I also asked what they thought they needed for information,
there had been an ice storm, the power
was out and it would be back on when its on, what else do you need to know?

BTW snowshoes don't go bad the leather lacing is raw hide and as long as
the mice haven't eaten it it'll be
fine with a new coat of varnish or polyurethane. They sell replacement
bindings. If you don't want yours send 'em
here. I haven't had any since mine were stolen 5 or 6 years ago. Its a low
thing to steal a guy's snowshoes... I
should check the area pawn shops, they've got my name on them...

Re: [MBZ] Car detailing

Dan wrote: As for the clay, by all means, do it. You'll be amazed at how much
cruft you get out of the finish. It's not something you have to do often,
maybe once a year, but it does make a big difference. One note about the
various kits you'll see for automotive clay:
Buy the cheapest one you can find, and don't buy additional wetting agent -
make your own. Take a spray bottle full of clean water and put a couple of
drops of dishwashing detergent in it, and it will do the same thing the bottle
that came with the clay does. When you're done, put the clay in a freezer
style ZipLoc and squeeze all the air out of it, and you'll be able to use the
clay again.

Thanks Dan! Those are great hints!

Probably just an effort to modernize like everything else. Manual chokes on
cars were common until ?? Honda still
had them in about the early 80's. People expect things to progress and for most
people, not having a choke or an
idle speed control is a sign of progress. They don't want to have to control
anything. They want automation - even
if they don't know how to use it.

My mother is funny. She constantly turns the thermostat up and down rather than
just leave it alone. In our house,
we essentially never touch the thermostat this time of year. We don't have the
the fancy programmable one either.
We just leave it alone. The temperature stays pretty constant. We have noticed
that the thermostat appears to be
somewhat affected by the dining room light over the table. It has 7 60W bulbs
in it and I think it produces enough
heat to make the thermostat think the house is warm enough. If we leave the
light on in the evening then it gets
cool upstairs.

LOL -- there's High Class, Low Class and the dreaded No Class. ;-)

I used to get a magazine quarterly from MB - they'd talk about past models
and stuff - like The Star but free. Anyway one issue was about the 600s -
they are truly awesome cars. They are larger in every dimension - even the
hood star is large. The window lifts are *hydraulic* - must be spooky to
watch them raise and lower silently. The engine used in the 600 was a fuel
injected 6.3 like the one used in the more common 300SE/SEL of the 60s - a
outstanding car in it's own right. I heard some salesmen would tape a $100
dollar bill to the dash and challenge the potential buyer to grab it between
0 and 60 mph. I understand the same $100 bill was never reached. I heard
similar stories about 427 Cobra's BTW. Anyway - for such a large car the
600 was very fast. One of my former customers drove a 600SWB as his daily
driver. He really liked it for tooling around town.

Air suspension was a common problem BTW. You might see a 600 (or
300SE/SEL sitting low to the ground looking like some misguided soul wanted
to lower it - when the problem was leaking air bags in the suspension that
allowed the car to lie down like a tired puppy.

Wouldn't mind having a 600/300 but wouldn't want to pay for maintaining
one.

Hi Larry,

My trans has always had a very slow leak, and I didn't feel it worth pulling
it all out unless there were other things to do, while in there. Other
than that, 350,000+ kms, and it all original. The car has never been
abused, by me or the previous owner, but all seems ok so far. No slip or
anything. I use synthetic fluid, and it gets about 80% of its current use
in the city, so it does run through the gears often, not just left in top as
with highway driving.

I don't know tons about the cars, other than the questions I've asked here,
but if there's anything I have tinkered with on the car, I'm happy to share
it with you.

Cheap to buy, cheap to run with parts from Rusty, even a lot of the small
parts I've purchased from the dealer, and enough room in the engine bay, you
can stand in it while working on it. ;-) lol

I knew a fellow too, who had a 600 for daily transport. A really amazing
car. Hmmm, I wonder when the hydraulic fail, if all the windows fall open
and the all seats start to slide around on their tracks?? lol.

I looked at one for sale in town here years ago. They were asking $39,000.
It looked amazing, very well cared for body and interior, but a few things
needed a bit of attention. Oh oh, . lol The real party trick when
showing it to me, was the self closing truck. And yeah, it closed with real
authority, you didn't want to get your hand or arm in that sucker after
pushing the close button! lol

Funny in ways, you have to take all the engineering efforts made in
context. They went to such trouble making the windows operate silently, as
well as the seats slide back and forth, but if you were opening a window,
I'm not sure you'd hear an electric motor over the enginenot as quiet as
you might think.

Like you Larry, I'd love a 600, but the cost to run one properly would be
scary!! I'd even love a SE 6.3. Did they come in both long and short
wheelbase models? The original Q car.

So looking around I find all kinds of oils including someone who

it up for the evening then drop for the ngiht, to many hot cold cycles.

Yeah, some people are there to show what their checkbook has bought and it
has nothing to do with having a passion for great old cars.

Seeing a old Ferrari, Porsche, Cobra or Ferrari selling for a million $$s or
more makes very little sense to me. I know it can cost 6 figures to restore
a neat old car but some of those cars are nothing more than a rusty chassis
which is turned into a 100 pt Concours car - excuse me auto-mo-bile. Have

No that is down the coast around Savannah or somewhere, Hilton Head
maybe. It is an organized deal, this thing at Kiawah was just some of
the local gentry waving their, uh, cars and trophy bimbo wives (who were
waving other things) around. Someone there was trying to sell a 560SL
that had belonged to Ivana Trump in NYC, for like $11k or something
close, it had been on CL for some time (have not seen it for awhile) and
actually looked pretty nice, new interior and paint job, made me wonder
what that was covering up.

Yeah, some people are there to show what their checkbook has bought

Seeing a old Ferrari, Porsche, Cobra or Ferrari selling for a million

You know that old saying Larry, there are now 3 times more Bugatti's out
there than ever left the factory. lol. Prices got so crazy, if you had an
old chassis, engine, or gearbox, you had the makings of a restored car.
lol. Problem was, the cars were broken up over time, everyone with a
chassis, engine, or gearbox built a new car around it, and ended up with an
original Bug. lol.

I'm not sure how much a true lover of old cars could get from something that
is 90% less than 10 years old. As a lover of car, and and particularly of
older vintage cars, nothing does it for me more than the survivors. Bit of
rust or faded paint, nothing like seeing them as they left the factory.
Those are the real deal.

[MBZ] Steering box replacement

2010-02-12 Thread Peter Frederick
Got the steering box replaced last night. Was easier than I was
fearing, but still a hassle since I'm way out of shape and my left
arm is weak from the accident (and my failure to strengthen it up).

Took about 3.5 hours, but this includes replacement of drag link and
right tie rod (did the left one earlier) and a new steering damper.
I think the drag link and tie rod may have been OK, but it's too
cheap to risk beating a new one to death by leaving old ones of
unknown condition in place.

The box is HEAVY for a fat old man lying on a creeper on the floor --
I suspect it might be easier on a lift. It would be much easier if
you can hold 60 lbs in one hand for an hour or so

Key points:

Everything is keyed, so you can't get it in way off center. The
coupler has a square for the column side, with a notch for the bolt.
There is a notch on the other side for the bolt, too, so you can't
get it on wrong. Ditto for Pitman arm. You should measure the
distance from the lower bearing on the pitman arm, as it can be moved
up and down a bit, but it won't go on wrong.

The bolt for the column side requires a LONG extension (at least 12,
more is better), but it's not bad. The coupling came of very easily,
and the box comes out the bottom easily. We used an impact wrench on
the three frame to box bolts, it's not easy to reach them otherwise
without a long extension, and that's too floppy.

Going back in, you MUST put the bolt in the upper coupler hole BEFORE
you put the bolts holding the box to the frame, as it's impossible to
push the column into the coupler once the box is bolted on.

I suppose one person can do this if you have a lift, but it took
three of use (my brother holding the box up with a loop of rope, me
guiding things on the floor, and my nephew putting the bolts in).
One the floor, it's not possible to hold the box up AND reach the
bolts, although on a lilt I think you could.

It drives like a new car, even though I don't have the alignment done
yet (very close, doesn't pull at all but the wheel is crooked). I
had forgotten how quiet a W124 is supposed to be, no tire or
suspension noise on normal roads unless actually hitting a bump or
hole. No wander, no crosswind sensetivity, it's great.

I just wish I'd done this a couple years ago!

Now I need to do all the links and mounts in the back and put an
evaporator in.

[MBZ] Another e-Bay seller liar

2010-02-12 Thread WILTON
'Rode with friend to Columbia, SC, this morning to help him pick up a '28 Model
AA Ford truck that he bought on e-Bay coupla days ago. Photos looked great, of
course, and included photos of manifold heater (a shroud on top of exhaust
manifold that directs heat from manifold into cabin) installed; even showed
turn switch on steering column and the lights installed front and rear. Friend
asked about tires; seller told him, They're in excellent condition - nearly
new; everything works; I wouldn't hesitate to drive it anywhere on a long trip
right now. Friend asked about speedometer, fuel gauge and windshield wiper.
Seller stated, Oh, they work, everything works. Friend asked, What about
leaks? Reply: No leaks. Engine has just been rebuilt.

Friend's original plan was to trailer the truck home, but couldn't readily find
a trailer big/long enough (truck is not a pickup, but a 1 1/2 ton, I think).
Seller promised such perfect product, friend decided to drive it home ('bout
200 mi), and I'd drive his car home.

As I was getting out of car in driveway beside the truck, I noticed heater
shroud lying in cargo bed of truck and many age/dry rot cracks in the tires -
nearly new tires, my etc. With my walker, I hobbled around to driver door of
the truck and glanced through the window, immediately noticing wires hanging
from the turn signal switch - working turn signals, my etc. By then, friend
and seller were approaching driver side of the truck, and I retreated to
friend's car to prepare for my driving it home, saying, I'll get out of your
way; y'all take your time; I'll just wait here in the car 'til you're ready to
go. Seller got in the truck, started it and turned on headlights, friend
walked around it checking the lights and got in the driver side of truck; I
thought they would take it for an extensive check-out drive, bur seller
proceeded to his car as friend waved to me to follow them. I yelled to ask him
if they were coming back here. No, he replied, Just follow us up to the
bank a quarter mile away; we'll transfer title there.

I followed 'em to the bank and waited a few minutes for the them to conclude
the transaction. Seller left; friend came to the truck, where I was waiting
beside it in the car. As friend prepared to leave in the truck, he told me
that seller had just confirmed that speedometer, fuel gauge and windshield
wiper don't work, in contrast to the glowing promises about how perfect
everything was while they were on the phone.

I wanted to drive along behind the truck on trip home, but friend insisted
adamantly that I leave him and come on home via Interstate highways while he
takes non-interstate at 40 mph. After he assured me that he is fully prepared
for the trip alone, with extra clothes, flashlight, extra battery, AAA card,
etc., I left him and came on home.

'Called friend coupla times since arriving home; he's a little over half way
here, but he's having to stop about every 20 miles to put water in the truck
because of a radiator leak. He called few minutes ago and asked if were OK to
put Stopleak in the radiator.
What are your opinions of Stopleak or such products? How might they complicate
later repairs to radiator, etc. Do they also leave deposits in the block to
need removal later?

BTW, I drove friend's Honda Fit home; it's quick, but I sure much rather drive
my 23 and 19-year-old MBs.  ;

I've always been told to steer clear of them regardless of the
mechanic's age, but in a '28 Ford... Seems like it would have the same
problem, heat + dry = hardening, not necessarily where you want it. I
have noticed that straight Zyrex is much thicker than regular
antifreeze, but if it leaks you're out a lot more cash.

Are you all in the path of the snow? If so he might want the stopleak
anyway, and deal with the consequences later. If not I'd counsel him
to ride it out, should be able to buy a half-dozen antifreeze jugs and
fill them at local restaurants as they run low.

2010-02-12 Thread MG
Odd you should mention Rusty. I checked the site but couldn't
find any oil listed. I see that Rusty thinks it's a good idea to
check with him. I could of course wish he thought it was good
enough to list it but since I am unable to think of everything,
why should I require it of him. :-) I need a couple of kits for
the guide rod bushing anyway so I guess I will have to call. The
good thing is that it should also be on sale as it is a
suspension part isn't it?

I'll find out tomorrow,

Manfred

Buy the proper stuff at the dealer or from Rusty (or PeachParts or
wherever). Do NOT substitute anything else, way too expensive if it
is incompatible with something.

I do not think it is plain 10W hydraulic oil

Re: [MBZ] Another e-Bay seller liar

2010-02-12 Thread Curt Raymond
You know I thought that too until I really paid attention...

The Prestone 50/50 stuff is $6+ at Autozone ($6.50 I think) while G-05 is
$11.95 at Car Quest and each gallon makes two...

One of my snowmobiles was having strange overheating episodes, not actually
overheating but getting quite high on the gauge, higher than I thought it
should be. I decided to drain the overflow bottle (which is actually the top
radiator tank on a snowmobile) and refill with G-05. The quart that lives in
that tank is a significant portion of the coolant total. When I drained the
tank I thought geez that looks awful thick.

I *think* what happened is that somebody ran straight green anti-freeze and its
so thick that at low engine speeds it has a hard time getting through the
thermostat. With a quart of 50/50 G-05 in the tank almost all of the heating
issues are gone. I need to drain and replace the system totally at some point,
maybe in the spring...

I have noticed that straight Zyrex is much thicker than regular
antifreeze, but if it leaks you're out a lot more cash.

I'm surprised he took the truck. I'd have been up one side of the seller and
down the other every third word would be liar. At the very least the seller
wouldn't have gotten all the money. He should definitely give the guy negative
feedback and include the words lied to me in the feedback description.

That truck doesn't have a synchromesh trans does it? First thing to do will be
to change the trans oil. With luck its just old and crusty.

2010-02-12 Thread Wonko the Sane
He was 21. I almost remember being 21. At that age, you feel invincible. I
have hiking boots older than him.

As a motorcycle rider, I find some dark humour in the fact that his helmet
didn't save him. (No helmet laws in Iowa.)

All that said, it is very sad. He had to be a very good athlete to get to
this level of competition, and a wrong swing of the hips in a turn cost him
his life.

Tragic but a dangerous occupation and although he was young, I suppose he

 the Olympics.

He went off the track at 89mph and hit a steel pole. I am no luger or
Olympian, but I might think they could use some orange netting around
the course, kinda like on the downhill ski runs, that would catch you
and slow you down before you hit stationary objects.

Re: [MBZ] Steering box replacement

2010-02-12 Thread Jim Cathey
I suppose one person can do this if you have a lift, but it took three
of use (my brother holding the box up with a loop of rope, me guiding
things on the floor, and my nephew putting the bolts in). One the
floor, it's not possible to hold the box up AND reach the bolts,
although on a lilt I think you could.

I managed alone on the 123 300D, but it was a real ordeal. (I imagine
that the cars vary as to the practicality.) I hung it from a string
at nearly the right height, then I worked on it (from above) to get
it seated.

Re: [MBZ] (SPAM?) 300TD suspension oil

2010-02-12 Thread Jim Cathey

What exact oil should I be using in the rear suspension of my 300TD?

I've been using the $2/quart Royco 756 aircraft brake oil
that I got off Craigslist. Until I can find the leak.
Then I've got two bottles of the real deal I got from
Rusty to put in. The real stuff's clear, the 756 is
red, and is MIL-PRF-5606H rated (same as the real
deal).

Should have had a Columbi-Q, my parents are there so I could have had
a good excuse to visit, and I know there are several SC listers. :)
That's kind of a dreary trip and worse by yourself, glad your friend
was prepared.

'Called friend coupla times since arriving home; he's a little over half
way here, but he's having to stop about every 20 miles to put water in the
truck because of a radiator leak. He called few minutes ago and asked if
were OK to put Stopleak in the radiator.
What are your opinions of Stopleak or such products? How might they
complicate later repairs to radiator, etc. Do they also leave deposits in
the block to need removal later?

BTW, I drove friend's Honda Fit home; it's quick, but I sure much rather
drive my 23 and 19-year-old MBs. ;

Safer than a Toyota, but the '28 Ford will be classier I think. :)
