Maybe the company in Toronto acquired the tracks, and licensed them out to

This doesn't appear to be any indication that all the old Trax catalog will be
repressed though, just available for license.

(313) Went Record Shopping

2008-10-19 Thread Jeffrey Richards
Well, I finally got to physically go record shopping for more than an hour this
weekend...It was the first time in 4 years. I am glad to have relocated back
to San Diego.

I think I did fairly well...I only had $40, and I dug deep in to some crates
over at United Records and Sound in the North Park part of town.
Anyway...here's what I got:

Damon Wild - Wish Box - Synewave 69
 http://www.discogs.com/release/623669
Cube 40 - Bad Computa - Temple Records NYV Inc 006
 http://www.discogs.com/release/32692
1/2 Inch Jack - Filthy Cow - 1/2 Inch Jack
 http://www.discogs.com/release/405096
Tyrone Latrelle - Remote Drone EP - RZ Records 17
 http://www.discogs.com/release/678808
Brommage Dub - Fettnice - ADLTD 05
 http://www.discogs.com/release/623427

While it may not be all that Detroit related, it is still Techno which I
believe is still on topic. I have been loving acid for quite some time now,
but lately I have been going nuts on it. I left 5-6 records at the store
because my paychecks aren't as big as I would like...

This weekend sure beat shopping online...all over the court.

I got the announcement today of Electrofunk.com, which
 combines the on
line UR vinyl/CD catalog with DetroitDigitalVinyl.com. Two
 things are
a little strange about the site:

 1. The Catalog -- particularly the download section -- is
 nowhere near
 as extensive as DDV was.
 2. There's apparently a new Electronic Warfare comp
 called 'The Other
Side of Bling' which is labeled 'Electronic Warfare
 2.0' I found this
a little baffling because there's already an Electronic
 Warfare 2.0
compilation (which followed, naturally enough, Electronic
 Warfare).
Is Electronic Warfare 2.0 now a stable brand name, and only
 the
 subtitles will change?

Can someone (Angie?) a little closer to the epicenter give
 us some background?

Re: (313) Model 500 Starlight releases

2008-09-19 Thread Jeffrey Richards
Yeah, I have this one: http://www.discogs.com/release/1195471

I really liked the Soultek remix on this one. He was the only one that tried
to do anything really different from the original. Deepchords mix is OK in my
book, but I could have lived with out one of the Echospace mixes and the
Convextion mix is just forgettable.

As for the digital files, I really like the S Y N T H mix, and Sean Deason
isn't bad at all, again a real different feal all together on that one. If you
ask me, the Echospace unreleased dub should have been on the record instead of
the one that is there now.

Since Stephen Hitchell was forced to sell MP3s because of so many being
distributed for free that it could maybe work in reverse? I am thinking of
sending him a letter and letting him know that I am going to D/L it illegally,
and pay for it when it comes out on vinyl...

of course I wouldn't D/L it illegally ;-)

I haven't head any of these yet, but I anxiously await
the arrival of the new Dan Curtin. He hasn't released
as Planetary in years, so I am quite interested.

That Bernard Badie...nice. Gunna have to order this
one too.

I recently picked up the new Echospace[Detroit].
Supposedly Intrusion is an artist that isn't Rod or
Stephen, but I'm not buying it. The Phase 90 remix on
there is killer.

Okdokey- haven't got time for a biggie but here's a
 few Detroit related things:

New Mark Flash on UR is an interesting departure for
 him- very west
 london broken beat/Jazzanova style stuff

New Mills- Alpha Centuri- he's been a bit hit or
 miss over the last
couple of years but this is a hit for me.

The Good , The Bad and The Deep from Rick Wade on
 Yore- double album
of Rick's trademark deep house grooves- couple of
 dodgy trumpet solos
here and there but excellent summer grooves
 throughout.

Dan Curtin 10 on Delsin- phew! What a scorcher!

Bernard Badie 12 on Mojuba- harking back to the old
 school sounds of
Cajmere, this is some REAL house music!

Electronic Warefare 2.1- perviously only through the
 Submerge site,
now more widely available- excellent mix by Skurge

Not from strictly from Detroit but check out the
 Alpha 606 12 on
 interdimensional transmissions if you're after
 advanced Electro.

Really nice to hear Rythmatic's take on the early
 Kevin Saunderson
sound on the Network re-releases- amazing how spares
 and clean these
tracks sound after 15 years- simple but very
 effective stuff.

 Stuff I just like:

Syclops album on DFA- Maurice Fulton crosses every
 genre known to man
with this double album- can't think of a single
 reason not to buy it-
 its fantastic.

New Alex Cortex thing- wasn't a big fan until a
 couple fo years ago-
he's growing in stature all the time now though

Trelik represses- Make A Move by Minimal Man on Baby
 Ford's old label
get's a very welcome second airing- been playing
 this for years- it's
 ace.

Losoul on fire as usual- remixing on Sonar
 Kollective

Move D- Drone on Modern Love- thought it was a bit
 dull at first then
 completely changed my mind.

Sorry these reviews are a bit short!

Chicago's rave fliers along side Delta 9 and DtWC.
This appears to be typical behavior of the mid to late
90s rave fliers, with out all the talent and big

With 19 stages and 3 days of work, I have a feeling
that there is going to be a huge let down and a

Re: (313) Cooking channel - Detroit Edition

2008-04-26 Thread Jeffrey Richards
I can't say anything for Detroit, because I never ate
at a coney island place there...But I used to frequent
Angelo's in Flint, and my Dad worked there when he was
in high school back in the mid 60's.

The ultimate 3 am food was the Coney Dogs and Fries
and Gravy. The coney sauce was made of ground beef
hearts, which I was always told was unique for coney
sauce. Some places I know use ground up hot dogs, and
super fatty scraps of everything else. The dogs were
always Vienna style dogs...which are my favorite.

I have never eaten on the real Coney Island, but I am
assuming it is completely different than the
interpretation we had in Flint.

Funnny...Wikipedia says the type of hot dog used was
developed in Michigan.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coney_Island_hot_dog

More reading and you find that Coney Island NY isn't
really responsible for the style of hot dog, the type
of restaurant, or the ingredients. It is just a
name...

Not only that...but if you want to look at releases by
an artist, you will also get all the MIX CDs and

is super annoying. I really don't look for comps...

The Marketplace certainly could use some changes. But
all in all, it is pretty good. Much better than eBay.
The most annoying thing for me is the fact that
hardly any of the new releases that I want are for
sale in the US. Certainly that is not Discogs fault.

Re: (313) Daniel Bell 7 Hour set at the Bunker tonight

2008-04-13 Thread Jeffrey Richards
I can't comment on bunker, but his show last week that
was *only* 4 hours was excellent. He played a ton of
tunes I have never heard before, some Martin Buttrich,
and Ron Trent's Alter States. If anyone has any
tracklistings from some of his recent sets I would
like to take a look at them.

The crowd was alright too...Except for the unwelcome
freaking attemps by some men of questionable (only
because I don't swing that way) sexuality. One of the
speakers fell and hit my friend in the leg on the way
to the ground, and almost plowed over some girl that
was like 4'11.

   DANIEL BELL (Accelerate, Logistic |

   7 HOUR SET!!

Daniel Bell is considered to be one of the
 pioneers of the
minimal techno genre. Born in Sacramento,
 California, Bell grew
up outside of Toronto, and later moved to Detroit
 where he
collaborated with Richie Hawtin as Cybersonik for
 three years on
Plus 8 records. In 1991, he started his own
 label, Accelerate,
where he released a string of extremely
 influential releases as
   DBX.

Bell was influenced primarily by Chicago House as
 well as the
works of Steve Reich and Philip Glass. His
 productions are
   characterized by minimalist house grooves
 accented by blips and
bleeps. Some tracks also feature bizarre voice
 effects and eerie
atmospherics such as Losing Control, which
 caused a sensation
   when released in 1994.

In the mid to late 90's Bell moved behind the
 scenes to create
7th City Distribution which exclusively pressed
 and distributed
   Robert Hood's M-plant, Dopplereffekt's Dataphysix
 and Anthony
Shakir's Frictional record labels, to name a few.
 He also
launched Elevate, Harmonie Park and relaunched
 7th City Records.
Debut releases on these labels helped kick start
 the music
careers of Todd Sines, Rick Wade, Theo Parrish
 and Shawn Rudiman
   among others.

In 2000, he relocated to Berlin, Germany, and
 released his first
dj mix CD, The Button-Down Mind of Daniel Bell,
 on Tresor
Records to wide critical acclaim. 2003 brought a
 follow-up
release on Logistic records, The Button-Down
 Mind Strikes Back,
and soon after a retrospective cd of older work
 was released:
Blip, Blurp, Bleep: The Music of Daniel Bell.

For the past few years Daniel has kept a heavy dj
 schedule that
has brought him all over the world. He is
 currently taking some
time to focus on his live set, which will premier
 sometime this
year. Tonight is his final US DJ gig for a while,
 and he's
treating us to a very special treat, an all night
 7 hour set with
   no opener or closer.

RE: (313) Recording DJ sets

2008-04-12 Thread Jeffrey Richards
Thats great info...I noticed after I asked the
question that I don't have a seperate booth, so my
secondary output is at the same volume my stereo
system is at.

Of course I have a clipping issue now: If I turn down
the output too much I can't hear it on the stereo to
mix with. I either need a new mixer or external sound
card...the mixer may be the better idea here, while
both would be optimal.

Thanks for the help. I think I have exhausted all my
options.

Also there is an advantage on using the booth out as
 a record, it
enables you to adjust the level from the mixer to
 the notebook, some
mixers record out can be high and cause clipping,
 just stick the booth

I picked up a flier in Detroit in 1999 where the Kooky

A week later Fred Giannelli posted here that he would
not be performing in Detroit at that time, no matter
what had been read locally. I don't remember if he
had a falling out with the promoter or if they just
used his name, but I do remember that the flier was
out more than a month before the party...so i lean
toward the latter.

The promoter has brought people like T-1000 and Disco

Re: (313) 313 list T Shirts for DEMF?

That would be the morally correct way to get the shirt
done. There are lots of those family reunion places
in Detroit that could print up those shirts at a fair
price.

Wait...maybe I shouldn't get involved in the

--- UI Design [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

How would getting the shirts done in the UK make it

There are a lot of screen printing houses here in
 Detroit that are
really good. With the exchange rate, its cheaper to
 get them done here
 in Detroit.

And for Kent (apologies for sending that last one
 through with rich
text, I know most the list didn't see the above), I
 understand that
your thinking of those in Europe, I am too. A month
 ago, I had a
clothing company from the UK contact me about
 outsourcing their screen
printing to a company here in Detroit because of the
 cost difference.
They will save more than 3/4 of the printing price
 and they get to
help the Detroit economy by printing them at a
 Detroit Artist
Community Center. They're speaking to the trade
 association about
tariffs, and it still looks like they'll save at
 last 1/2.

This list is about the 313 influence. I vote we do
 them in Detroit
and in turn help benefit Detroit Artists in a
 Detroit Community
 Center.

That website is a crock. A store that is as good as
Gramaphone is should have a much better online
selection. It looks almost as if they put a store up
online so they can advertise for their eBay auctions.

Yes...the online store is new. It looks great.

Their website has been underconstruction, for what, 2
years now? I would think that if they were really
working on it over the past couple of years they would
have put more than 200 records online.

I was just disappointed by by the selection. Bent
Crayon even has a better selection listed...they just
don't take records off their site after they sell
them.

I just placed an order with Forced Exposure...three
whole business days, and still not email from them. I
wonder if any of theirs are in stock.

The mail order record sales here in the USA is dismil
at best, and I was hoping the Gramaphone site would
help that. It hasn't, as they are still directing us
to eBay.

COMING SOON: Various Artists – “Viewpoints Chapter
 One” / AW-010LP
  AW-010CD (2xLP / CD)

  For soundsnippets/preview clips please visit:
  http://www.arneweinberg.de/releases/aw010.html

  Release date: april 2008

AW-Recordings is proud to present the first label
 compilation
available on double vinyl and on CD. Viewpoints
 features new
material by artists all around the globe with the
 same kind of
vision in mind. Deepness, soul and timelessness
 expressed in
different ways of electronic music. The
 compilation features some
new talents alongside some well known producers.

Louis Haiman: Based in St. Louis he is running his
 label fwdthought
featuring artists such as Tony Drake and Chris
 Schubert. He is best
known for his contributions to Transmat. “Inner
 Technology” is a
  deep swirling filtered electro tune.

CRC: aka Harrison Fnord aka Michael Diekmann.
 Coming from Finland
his sound is best described as the northern
 version of the good old
days of Detroit and old Plus 8 records. He has
 released on several
labels such as Statik Entertainment or Curle and
 is definitely one
  to watch in the future.

Alex Leon: Not only doing the complete graphics
 for AW, Alex also
does some music of his own. Being very shy and not
 willing to let
the public hear his creations it’s great to
 present you one of his
deep ambient pieces. The perfect soundtrack for a
 rainy nightdrive.

Deixis: A mysterious new artist from the UK. This
 CD only bonus
track introduces Deixis to the label rooster. A
 complete 12” will
follow later this year. The stuff can be best
 described as a mixture
of old B12, Black Dog and Convextion or Maurizio
 material. CD only
  bonus track!

Stephen Brown: Stephen doesn’t really need an
 introduction. He has
released superb material on Djax Up Beats,
 Transmat and Subject
Detroit to name a few. He created his own unique
 sound through the
90’s until now and we are happy to have him on the
 compilation.

Time Light Curve: This is a new project of Gerard
 Hanson aka
Convextion / E.R.P. Expect some machine funk
 coming directly from
  Texas.

Myon: First ever release by this fresh artist from
 germany. Pure
analogue electronic techno with a clear influence
 by Stasis or As
One for example. Expect a lot of melodic soul on
 thisCD only bonus
  track.

Strand: the Detroit based trio is known from
 releases on Delsin and
Shake’s Frictional label. “Soleil” is wonderful
 deep stringladden
detroit techno with a beautiful melodic piano
 line. Licensed from
  Harbonder, Strand’s imprint.

Ovatow: Ovatow prefers to stay unknown. He already
 released on
Frantic Flowers and Syncom Data’s SD label. He
 continues his unique
dub influenced style with “Visitation_v4” in a
 very funky electro
way. Ovatow breaks the musical barriers of the so
 called dub techno
  genre.

East Island: One of the famous dutch duo’s from
 the good old days.
They had several releases on legendary Dutch label
 Eevo Lute and on
Down Low Music together with The Moderator. “The
 master of Servir”
is an emotional deep techno masterpiece that takes
 your mind onto a
journey to far away galaxies. CD bonus only!

XDB: We welcome Kosta Athanassiadis to the label.
 He is one of the
very few German producers creating his own unique
 sound nowadays and
his label Metrolux is hot! Watch out for this
 talented man and
listen to “c.o.n.” to experience some good quality
 techno music.

Obsolete Music Technology: aka Steven Tang, living
 in Chicago and
running his imprint Emphasis for a long time. We
 think he should be
much more famous and hopefully “Evening Star” will
 help to raise the
attention. His style is a mixture of Detroit and
 Chicago sound with
a melancholic and deep sense for beautiful
 melodies.

Derek Carr: Hailing from Ireland, Derek closes the
 album with one of
his most emotional and deepest tracks. “Telemetry”
 is pure
electronic soul. Check out his debut album
 “Science Soul” on Nice
Nasty which was released in 2007.

  Next on AW-Recordings:

  AW-011 Paul Mac – “Options EP” (12”)
  AW-012 Deixis – “Nomads Soul a Mannequins
 Romance” (12”) ( incl.
  Arne Weinberg Remix )

  Tracklisting:

  VINYL:
A1 Louis Haiman – Inner technology
  A2 CRC – Archon
A3 Alex leon – Instant grey

B1 Stephen Brown – Light rain
B2 Time Light Curve – Multipole vector

  C1 Strand – Soleil

2008-01-10 Thread Jeffrey Richards
i may agree or disagree, but that doesn't matter.

that is an awfully closed minded thing to say, and I
do believe that alot of what techno and creative music
is about is having an open mind. If a director has an
open enough mind to try Techno, then good for him.

I remember people cringing at orchestras playing with
heavy metal bands...it may have not liked it very
much, but i do appreciate the work that was put in to
the result and the creativeness to give it a shot.

I think the neighbors would have freaked out more if
they caught you burning the couch in the front yard.

I have seen the Expedit in action by a few friends of
mine, and one of my friends has moved his 6 times
since buying it. Even worse, he takes it up and down
stairs every time he moves. It has held up well, and
I don't think he even has it tethered to a wall. If
Ikea had cheap shipping and handling, I would have
ordered one of the small ones no problem.

Instead I have a cheap Danish copycat product that I
bought at Big Lots as an Office Depot closeout works
almost as well. My shelves are bowing a little bit,
but that is because they are overloaded right now, but
they are 2X2 unit and sit on casters for easy moving,
so I can't complain. I also have a 2X4 unit that I
use as a dresser.

configuration as Tristan, three 2x4 bin units. I
 have mine stacked
two side by side vertical with the third perched
 (only somewhat
precariously) atop them on its side. I live in a
 relatively small new

 must go vertical to
use every inch of space. I'm pretty short, but
 I'm used to a 34
height table for my DJ gear, so the expedit on its
 side would be a
little low but serviceable as a booth. They'd
 be especially low for
  anybody who is tall.

I did have an incident with the 5x5 when one of
 the shelves broke, but
that's because somebody got drunk and toppled into
 the expedit, using
the shelf as a brace. Under normal use the
 shelves seem sturdy
enough. I would recommend them highly.

This is the one I just put up and it seems

I was actually logging on to my email account to start

many...

Soultek - Analogueheart - Soundshift [Detroit]
Jared Wilson - Jared Wilson's Drug Related Stories
[777]
Chris Moss Acid - Londons Calling EP - Mathmatics
Recordings
The Plan - Plan B - Submerge
Tiefschwarz - 10 Years Of Tiefschwarz Blackmusik
Remixed Part 2 - Souvenir

My top 5...a little dub, some acid, Detroit, and a C2
remix that will rock the ladies socks off. There are
plenty of records that came out this year that I am
pretty sure I like, but I haven't purchased them or
heard them on a loud sound system, so I won't list

In fact there *is* a legit white-label version of
 the LP because that is
the one I own and I have had it for four years.

When I bought it, fearing it was a boot I wrote to
 the label and got
back a reply saying it was genuine (it has the
 correct cat number.)

But I only realised last night that it has one extra
 track than the
labelled version - 'Asian Amazons'. This means there
 are (at least) two
 different editions of the LP.

I listened to the samples and can't say I was
thrilled. It had a different feel to it, and I may
just appreciate it through a pair of head phones or on
a loud stereo system.

I did also listen to the samples for the Todd Sines

quite delightful and added them to my want list.

The main difference between this and that Detroit
video is this does not glorify guns and violence. The
images here are clearly anti war and hodge podge.

There are plenty of people that try to use Detroit's
reputation in the promotion of themselves...Even Mad
Mike will do it...and he isn't a thug. I've got a
video on myspace where he mildly pulls it.

I bet if someone bought that D video in the end it
just looks really sad how a the people of a city ended
up like that.

I watch this show on AE called The First 48, and all
these thugs roll into the police station hard as
nails, and by the time they are done being questioned
they are crying like little babies. They don't
realize how bad it is until they are in trouble for
doing the same bad stuff.

Re: (313) Detroit 2007

2007-09-12 Thread Jeffrey Richards
Well...I find it quite easy to watch even though the
topic is pretty tough. I am glad I grew up 60 miles
to the north in Flint, but really the same stuff is
going on there. This documentary seems to focus
mostly on Detroit's underground Rap and Hip Hop stars
as half the trailer is filled with them. East Side
Chedda Boys and Al Nuke were the first ones I
recognized. There are gunfights amongst Detroit
rappers all the time. A couple of years before Proof
shot that guy up, (and then got lit up himself) he got
into it at Greektown Casino with Royce Da 5'9 with
guns and all...Maybe a lot of problems could be solved
if Detroit's scene came together instead of hating all
the time.

While this may be a documentary, a there seems to be a
few dramatization scenes...which I am sure were put in
place to shock its audience in to believing that the
toughest thugs come from Detroit. You can watch a
similar documentary from LA, Miami, Mexico City, and
even Flint that would have all the same material with
different names attached to it.

Some of you overseas peeps may not understand the
glorification of violence in the media, and I don't
either...but it is something that is seen every day in
the US no matter what the location.

I think the Government needs to take steps to
providing children in the US with outlets to channel
creativity and energy to help keep them off the
streets in Detroit and throughout all the major
metropolitan areas in the country...the Boys and Girls
club just isn't cutting it anymore. But most
importantly, the these kids parents need to help their
child move in the right direction. In general, I
don't think the parenting in the last 25 years has
been all that great, and that goes for all races.

I didn't proofread this before sending it...hopfully
it makes sense.

Jeff

2007-08-28 Thread Jeffrey Richards
You will see old tracks spun out more with the Techno
DJ's than the house DJ's from what I have noticed.

Ther is this thing in music that almost totally seems
to relate to whats hot and unfortunatly Bushes isn't
whats hot like it was a few years ago.

Just look at who spins out Move Your Body. It is
either DJ's spinning an old school set, or a Techno DJ
throwing it in like they usually do. At least that is
the way I see it...

Also, a lot of the 5-6 year old house tracks sell for
cheap $$ while Techno tracks of the same quality (4
or 5 stars) cost more.

SOMEONE HELP ME WITH THIS MIX QUANDRY SO I DON'T BLOW
A BUNCH OF MONEY ON THIS TRACK! (sorry for the caps)

It does sound like a lot of fun.

I used to go to parties at Route 66 in Chicago, which
is (was?) a roller rink, but they were never
innovative enough to break out the roller skates to
make it an extra good time.

Too bad too, I could have loved to hear Paul Johnson's

I would go to KDJ's after party just to get a bite to
eat. Soul/Comfort foods would really hit the spot

 Hi list,

Is there anybody with a copy of No Ufo's they'd be
 willing to sell,
or does anyone know where to buy a new copy, if such
 a thing exists? A
friend of mine is looking for a copy and had trouble
 finding one. I'm
not going crazy searching since it not for me, but I
 figured I'd ask
 on the list at least.

 Thanks!

it is genuinely repressed, but if it is official...i
