Guys, I think we India and Pakistan people fight too
much. Finish it off yaar, justtake it easy ok. Qayoom,
Zahid,Mukul and Bproud plz take it easy. Zahid, u did
a great job but i know here people getting 100%. I
know one of friend got 99% in Lab, its not a big deal.
the deal is how u justify these scores with ur
performance. So take it easy and be polite and down to
earth, becuase this is the recipe of success.

Mukul, my brother plz take it easy.

Thanks for the input Les,

This isn't the case here, because if I get them around the wrong way,
there is no link at all.

I do get some traffic down this connection, probably about equivalent

TOBPROUD,

Early morning I see a nice thread on list : CCIE Written R&Sand find
this up and down of mails where person like you get so generalised that
they take up the names of whole country

I dont know what on Earth prompts you to say India and or any country in
general. It would be nice if you keep things to individuals or say " a
group of people who have access to dumps of written exam". Dont worry too
much if you are not resourcefuland work hard to get pass..it will pay
off.

It is Window Nt machine having proxy 2 on it. It also has a real ip on it.

Passed BSCN and a question about CCIE written [7:21815]

2001-10-03 Thread RB Jón Eggert Guðmundsson

I finally passed the routing exam on Monday. I used the following books:
1) Routing TCP/IP by Doyle. An excellent book about internal routing
protocols like OSPF,EIGRP,RIP and redistribution.
2) Internet routing architectures by Halabi. A good book about BGP.
3) CCNP routing Exam certification guide by Cisco Press. An excellent
book for the BSCN exam.
4) Building Scalable Cisco Networks by Paquet. I personally found the
exam certification guide better
5) Routing certification guide and exam notes by Sybex. It is good to
read the last week before the exam. It do not go into details.
6) Routing exam cram. It is totally waste of money.I personally like
the examcram books and I have used it a lot for the cisco exams but this
book is not good.
7) IP routing fundamentals. Cisco press. It is about routing protocols
in general and is good for getting fundamental knowledge but not specially
for the exam.
8) OSPF network design solutions by Thomas M Thomas, cisco Press. It is
better for deeper knowledge of OSPF.
9) OSPF Anatomy of an internet routing protocol. Moy (He designed the OSPF
protocol) it is excellent book about ospf and I will read it again for the
CCIE R/S written
10) BGP4 Internet domain routing in the internet by Stewart. I need to
read that book a few more times to compleatly understand it.
I took the boson test 2 and 3 and the questions were of the same difficulty
as the actual exam.
I work as a WAN administrator at the Icelandic Banks Data Senter and have
about 4 years experience with cisco routers so configuring ospf and simple
BGP is not new to me. Yet I found the exam difficult so do not underestimate
it.

I will now continue studying for the CCIE R/S written exam and I am looking
for buying a few books for it. On this list many people have read and
recommended books by Caslow. I looked his name up on www.amazon.com and
found that he has written many books about cisco. What book(s) by him did
you read for the CCIE? Can you give me the ISBN number please.

This list have helped me immensely and thank you all for keeping this list
going.

Regards
Jon Gudmundsson

www.addall.com - seems to be the best place to check. They include the price

I've used them occasionally because the shipping was reasonable(and cheaper
then BP) and the books arrived faster to CA.

I continue to be amazed at what Amazon calls "discounts". the last few
times I've checked, Bookpool has had the best deals, with book in stock (
some other places claim lower prices, but they always seem to be
backordered )

Greetings to All ...

I would highly appreciate if some one can help me out this problem...

Basically we have connectivity to two ISP in India. We have different IP

ISP... we have 2610 router with to serial interface and on Ethernet
interface.

Now we wanted to configure this router in such a way that any packet comming
from 164.164.89.80/28 should be routed its respective ISP
and any packet comming from 202.169.191.128/28 network should be routed to
respective ISP.

we have give both the ip address on the eth..

Help with OSPF scenario [7:21830]

2001-10-03 Thread Vijay Patankar

Hi everyone,

I have a small ospf scenario and I need some help:

   R4R1---(s0)-bbr1
|  ||
| ofpf 1   ||
|  ||
| area 0   ||  ospf area 999
|  ||
R4-R3 |
 | |
 | |
 |(s1)- bbr2

Both the routers bbr1 and bbr2 are in area 999
on router bbr2 there are 6 loop back addresses
loop 2 ip add 132.56.2.1/24
loop 3 ip add 132.56.3.1/24
loop 4 ip add 132.56.4.1/24
loop 5 ip add 132.56.5.1/24
loop 6 ip add 132.56.6.1/24

I need to resolve the following issues ssues:

a) all the loopback addresses on bbr2, show up as /32 in area0
b) i need to summarise these loopback address to /20 on bbr1
c) block these addresses on bbr2 from being re-distributed into area 0
but at the same time allow the ospf neighbor relationship between
bbr2 and r4 to be maintained.

I think I can use
- route-map, filter-list and/or distribute list

How can I resolve these issues... brief configs on route-map etc will be
appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Vijay

You might wanna check out booksamillion.com before you buy from bookpool.
Often they have lower prices, and their service is outstanding.

I only use Amazon to search for books and read the reviews.

some other places claim lower prices, but they always seem to be

Subject: Passed BSCN and a question about CCIE written [7:21815]

RE: [Doyle on OSPF - Virtual Links [7:21658]

2001-10-03 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Chuck,
Also remember that in a perfect world, virtual links are only meant to be a
"quick fix" and, in most network designs, they are not an acceptable standard.
My .02c,
Rob H.NP, DP, blah,blah,blah.

RFC 1793 discusses demand circuits in detail.

I suspect but don not know for sure that virtual circuits are treated as
demand circuits for a couple of reasons. A virtual circuit can traverse a
bunch of routers from point of termination. The designers were sensitive to
the added traffic that LSA's and hellos would add. Remember that the design
work was done back in the days when a T1 was the greatest thing on earth,
and 56K was common in WAN backbones. Also, it might be that the designers
were thinking that virtual links might actually take place over dial up
connections. for example, if I have a small dial up branch office in another
state, I have them dial up to the nearest ( least costly ) branch office,
rather than dial directly to my HQ site.

Subject: Re: [Doyle on OSPF - Virtual Links [7:21658]

This is referring to the fact that the virtual-link is being treated as a
Demand Circuit. I don't believe that Doyle spoke much about this in his
book,
but I could be wrong. A Demand Circuit is used for low-bandwidth links such
as ISDN to limit the uptime required for the link, this is done in two ways,
first Hellos are suppressed between the two endpoints, and second LSAs are
not
sent when they expire, instead they are marked as DoNotAge LSAs which act
just
like they sound, they don't age. These two features are independent of each
other, so for instance you could have a demand circuit that is suppressing
Hellos, but isn't sending DoNotAge LSAs (so the LSAs will still need to be
refreshed) or you could theoretically have a demand circuit that isn't
suppressing Hellos, but is sending DoNotAge LSAs. In your situation, the
link
is suppressing Hellos as it states, but is not sending DoNotAge LSAs. This
indicates that somewhere in your OSPF domain there is a router that doesn't
support these LSAs, so the router is not allowed to generate them. It is a
requirement for a router that supports virtual-links to always try to make
it
a demand circuit, so Cisco routers will always attempt to suppress Hellos
over
virtual links.

It is a command to basically use on serial interfaces when you have run out
of available ip addresses or want to conserve the ones you've got. You just
use ip unnumbered in combination with a configured routing protocol.

Bookpool might have the best deal , but the transport cost works out to be
higher for International customers .
I prefer buying from Amazon , because of the shipping options they offer
for out of US customers . It works to be much lower then bookpool , and the
total cost of the book less discount plus the freight is slightly lower at
amazon as compared to other book vendors .

Re: source based routing ..... [7:21827]

You don't say how your routing, strictly default or full BGP. If full
BGP let the packets take the best path, if default set up two default
and load share per destination and I wouldn't get too hung up about some
asymetrical routing.

But if you insist, policy routing is for you.

T1 install; line protocol going down and up every 30 seconds [7:21848]

2001-10-03 Thread Stephen Hoover

I am working on point to point T1 install at a small office. The line
protocol keeps going up and down every 30 seconds and I cannot ping myself.
My keepalive timers are not incrementing. The telco provider says that they
are not providing the clock on this line and that we need to do so
ourselves. My condition remains the same whether I set my clock to line or
internal. The router on the remote end however seems to be ready to go when
they set their clock source to line. When they set to internal, the telco
provider sees framing errors on the line.

Does it seem feasible that there is a clock source somewhere back towards
there end of the line that their router can receive and mine cannot? I am
working with the IT staff on the remote end of the link, but none of us seem
to have any idea where else to go with this problem.

My system works fine when I put my DSU in local loopback and it works when I
put their DSU in remote loopback - so I *think* the hardware is sound.

Any help is appreciated!

Re: IP unnumbered [7:21794]

2001-10-03 Thread Thomas Larus

Let's say you want to run frame relay or hdlc using serial interfaces on two
routers, but don't have any ip addresses to waste, you can use the ip
addresses of the ethernet or token ring interfaces as the ip addresses for
your serial interfaces. This stuff is easy to look up on Cisco's web site.
so check for configs there.
A simple example would be something like:

int s0
ip unnumbered e0

You are telling the router to use e0's address for the serial link. Now one
would think that this would not work, because the ethernet interfaces on two
routers usually will not have ip addresses in the same subnet (unless you
are set them up on the same subnet in a practice lab). Somehow it all
works, though. I need to play with it some more.

I used ip unnumbered when I was trying to get ip ospf demand-circuit to work
where the isdn link was a backup to a frame relay link. (Yes, this is
apparently similar to a notorious ccbootcamp lab, but I didn't know that
until I started noticing people posting to the lab list answers to questions
I was having.)

This is normal. Loopbacks are advertised as "host
routes", meaning they show up as /32s and not their
"true" mask.

To allow the route table to see the true mask you can
use one of the following commands;
1. under the interface, such as
interface loopback0
ip address 132.56.1.1 255.255.255.0
ip ospf network point-to-point

2. or, under the ospf process
   area 999 range 132.56.0.0 255.255.240.0

> b) i need to summarise these loopback address to /20
> on bbr1

This above "area 999 range" command should solve this
problem also.

> c) block these addresses on bbr2 from being
> re-distributed into area 0

Under the ospf process, enter
distribute-list 11 out

access-list 11 deny 132.56.0.0 0.0.16.255
access-list 11 permit any

You tie your serial (generally) to a LAN or loopback interface instead
of giving the serial interface it's own address. For this scenerio just
don't do it, need addresses, see RFC 1918.

Reverse Telnet [7:21857]

2001-10-03 Thread Ray Smith

Guys,

Correct me if I am wrong, but are there several ways of doing a reverse
telnet? When the term reverse telnet surfaces I think of a console
connection via a terminal server to another router or switch using an ip
address and port number (eg. 10.10.5.1 2001).

However, based on what I am reading I can also connect to a US Robotics
modem via that same terminal server to configure it. I am not very savy in
the area of dial-up and would like one of you gurus to clarify for me.
Thanks

Reverse telnet will allow you to access a serial device (mode, console port)
connected to a low speed serial, or async port on the terminal server. It's
very handy for a single point of access to multiple router/switch consoles,
and it's used to access modems that are directly connected. Check out:

Re: T1 install; line protocol going down and up every 30 [7:21862]

2001-10-03 Thread MADMAN

You definately need to set the DSU and one location to line the other
to internal. Also make sure you have you framing and coding correct,
most common is B8ZS and ESF which are default if using Cisco's internal
CSU/DSU

Re: Reverse Telnet [7:21857]

2001-10-03 Thread John Neiberger

This is true. We use modems connected to the AUX port for dial backup
and I can always RT to the modem to check things out. It's not
necessary very often but it's easy to do. The downside is that the
modem must be configured to match the speed and flow control settings of
the AUX port before RT will work.

So, yes, you can modify the modem config or manually test dialout using
RT, but you have to do some configuration with the modem before you even
connect it to the router.

Think of RT as tunneling an asynchronous serial connection using IP.
This isn't precise but you get the idea. It doesn't really matter what
you're RT'ing to as long as it's asynchronous serial and can be
connected to the router. You can RT from one router to another or from
a router to another serial device, such as a modem. The idea is the
same, really.

HTH,
John

>>> "Ray Smith"  10/3/01 9:21:11 AM >>>
Guys,

Correct me if I am wrong, but are there several ways of doing a reverse

telnet? When the term reverse telnet surfaces I think of a console
connection via a terminal server to another router or switch using an
ip
address and port number (eg. 10.10.5.1 2001).

However, based on what I am reading I can also connect to a US Robotics

modem via that same terminal server to configure it. I am not very
savy in
the area of dial-up and would like one of you gurus to clarify for me.

Thanks

Ray

[7:21848]

Thanks,
Stephen Hoover

Sorry but i was wrong, after a verification :

I think that :

Question 2 is not A
because, in case of RSM, you don't need to put the "set mls include"
command. It's automatic and MLS is by default enable on CATALYST that
support it.

So I think the answer is B.

Sorry for the confusion ...

This is a notification that all major carriers, like AT&T and MCI are
experiencing a widespread problem with people dialing 800 #'s. Right now it
is affecting mainly Ohio, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Illinois and the West Coast.
When dialing an 800 # from one of the above mentioned locations, you receive
a fast busy signal.

Re: T1 install; line protocol going down and up every 30 [7:21873]

2001-10-03 Thread MADMAN

The lines are clocked, 1.5M in T1 for example but the end devices also
need to be in synch. In frame relay the frame switch provides clock so
you set both ends DSU's to clock off the line and a point to point
connection you pick one DSU to provide clock and one to synch off others
clock since there is no switch.

Re: T1 install; line protocol going down and up every 30 [7:21872]

2001-10-03 Thread Stephen Hoover

I am using an internal DSU on my end. I am not sure what they are using on
their end. I have checked and double checked the linecoding and framing.
This is a SouthWestern Bell circuit, but it passes through a different long
distance carrier. It should be B8ZS, ESF, and HDLC on the layer 2. Again,
when the remote end is set to line, they seem to be fine. When they go to
internal they cause framing errors. This leads me to believe that there
already is a clock signal on their end of the link. Regardless of whether I
go to line or internal my line protocol bounces.

Often e-mails to the group with URLs in them get filtered. I'm not sure
why. It happens especially with short e-mails when the URL is near the top.
You just have to be patient and persistent.

Access Server config [7:21877]

2001-10-03 Thread khramov

We are trying to configure access server to console in to the device
that is attached to it through async port. When we try to telnet into
the device that attached to the router we get connection refused
message. What should we check?

[GroupStudy.com removed an attachment of type text/x-vcard which had a name
of khramov.vcf]

RE: T1 install; line protocol going down and up every 30 [7:21881]

2001-10-03 Thread Daniel Cotts

I recently had a similar issue with no clock provided one end due
(supposedly to some piece of telco gear). In any case we didn't know that
was happening. We assumed clocking was from the line. It would fail
intermittantly every few days during idle traffic times. The solution was to
provide internal clocking on the unclocked end.
Let's call the unclocked end "A" and the end receiving clocking "B". Until
we found the trouble the quick fix was to loop B back on itself for a minute
then pull the loop down. It would always resync. With an internal CSU you
can view the line with show controllers t1 int number. It logs error counts
in 15 min intervals. A show controllers t1 will give 24hr totals. The error
message at B would be something like Loss of Frame received sending alarm.
Are you saying that the remote end can put a loop back towards you and you
can then do extended pings to your own ip address?

Config should look like the following:
controller T1 0/1
 framing esf
 linecode b8zs
 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24 speed 64
(I learned about not including the speed parameter the hard way.)
!
interface Serial0/1:0
 ip address 10.xxx.1.3 255.255.255.0

Debug Timer set? [7:21883]

2001-10-03 Thread Kim Edward B

Dear Cisco grus,

Is there such a debug command that sets time for the debugging so in case I
do such thing as 'debug all' it finishes the debug by itself after certain
time?
I searched the Cisco site and also am going through the 12.0 Debug Command
Reference but can't seem to find it.
Let me know.

Network utilization levels... [7:21884]

2001-10-03 Thread McMasters, Eric

To all,
I'm monitoring a network and I'm seeing high network utilization
levels on the main (only) network segment. My question is that I've always
heard the rule is 60-70% and your in trouble and can start experiencing
network degradation. Now my question is where can I find this in writing?
I've been searching CCO and other Internet sites for the better part of a
day now and I haven't found anything stating what percentage falls within
the "best practices / industry standard" arena.

I know that I have read this info in books, but again I think it just states
this as a rule of thumb. I know all networks are different and the
saturation number may change depending on how many collisions are occurring
etc., but I'm at a loss trying to find this info anywhere. Any assistance
would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks and I hope everyone has a great
day!!

Eric

frame relay qos on the router [7:21885]

2001-10-03 Thread Umer Irshad Khan

hi,
I have a question. consider a network consisting of frame realy switches
(newbridge nodes containg framerelayengine cards) connecting two routers via
serial interfaces. if we have the qos parameters like the CIR,Bc and Be
defined on the frame realy switches for a particular virtual connection. is
there a need to define the same parameters on the serial interfaces of the
two
end point routers also. what is the use of that since the rate enforcement
would be carried out effictively by the switches inside the framerealy cloud.
right ? we can simply define a BW on the router interfaces which is more than
Bc + Be.

Re: Access Server config [7:21877]

2001-10-03 Thread EA Louie

add no exec to line 1 8

to get to line 1, telnet 192.168.190.25 2001
if you add ip host device1 2001 192.168.198.25, then you can just telnet
device1

If you get connection refused, clear line 1. you might have to do that
twice to actually get the line cleared.

good luck

RE: ISDN Calls from Pots? [7:21738]

2001-10-03 Thread Mike Sweeney

Dont you need digital modems for the for the ISDN circuit to carry the
voice(pots) connection? IE.. PRI configured to use both ISDN and POTS has a
digital modem card for the conversion. I would imagine that a BRI line needs
the same type of conversion.. ie.. VoIP..

Here is one link that talks about it.. but it's noted that DoV lines can be
corrupted since not all ISDN switches cna handle this properly..

Anyone else that can add to this.. please do!!!

I was hoping that Cisco would have a URL where you can enter the serial

Re: OT: The most powerful Unix command EVER!!! (3rd trail!!!) [7:21892]

2001-10-03 Thread dre

actually, this is incorrect. rm -rf is not really as powerful
for removing systems as you would think. assuming that
rm uses dynamic linked libraries (instead of static), it could
theoretically stop in execution upon reaching libc.so[.X] or
any of it's dependant executables. assuming that one hits
/usr/lib before /export/home, you might be in luck.

a better way to delete an entire disk would be to use
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 bs=1024k (assuming Solaris)
which writes tons of zeros to your disks.

what rm does. What does rm -rf do?

Often e-mails to the group with URLs in them get filtered. I'm not sure
why. It happens especially with short e-mails when the URL is near the top.
You just have to be patient and persistent.

i would second that, though for routing protocols you can also use TCP/IP
routing jeff doyle volume 1 and 2 (also by cisco press) as a reference

Re: Network utilization levels... [7:21884]

2001-10-03 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

The 70% "rule of thumb" is in many network design treatises. I know because
I put it there. ;-) I put it in the initial Designing Cisco Networks course
which grew a life of its own and the "rule" got listed in all sorts of
design books after that.

I got it from years of consulting for Network General (makers of the
Sniffer). It was a guideline that we used when doing health checks of
customer networks. If we saw 70% for a sustained about of time, that was
our indication to do some more sniffing to see if the network was perhaps
not healthy.

A sustained amount of time was generally 10 minutes.

The 70% was for WAN, FDDI, Token Ring, and full-duplex Ethernet.

The reason for 70% is that if you go beyond that, and a large burst of
traffic happens, then it is possible that the burst can't be accommodated
and must be queued. You could go beyond 70% if you aren't too concerned
about packets getting queued and you don't expect large bursts. The exact
number depends on your performance goals and your traffic patterns.

On shared Ethernet networks, we got concerned at a lower level, at about 40
or 50 percent, because of collisions on shared networks. Although it
completely depends on the number of stations, how often they send, and how
large their packets are, at about 40 percent utilization, a typical shared
Ethernet network becomes noticeably inefficient and wastes a lot of
bandwidth retransmitting frames that collided. This is not a hard-and-fast
rule, and I could write pages on why this might not apply on your network,
but it's still a reasonable rule of thumb.

If you see any documents that present these "rules" as more than just thumb
rules, don't believe them. ;-)

i have heard that the time duration between the written exam and the lab has
increased to 18 months from 12 months, is it true and effective from now on.
also does it hold for a candidate who have cleared his exam before this rule

Re: OT: The most powerful Unix command EVER!!! (3rd trail!!!) [7:21904]

2001-10-03 Thread MADMAN

a handy little tool when looking for these things in UNIx are your
handy dandy man pages, though I often find them kinda crpytic.

ledzep> man rm

User Commands rm(1)

NAME
rm, rmdir - remove directory entries

SYNOPSIS
 /usr/bin/rm [ -f ] [ -i ] file ...

 /usr/bin/rm -rR [ -f ] [ -i ] dirname ... [ file ... ]

 /usr/xpg4/bin/rm [ -fiRr ] file ...

 /usr/bin/rmdir [ -ps ] dirname ...

DESCRIPTION
  /usr/bin/rm /usr/xpg4/bin/rm
The rm utility removes the directory entry specified by
each file argument. If a file has no write permission and
the standard input is a terminal, the full set of permis-
sions (in octal) for the file are printed followed by a
question mark. This is a prompt for confirmation. If the
answer begins with y (for yes), the file is deleted, other-
 wise the file remains.

If file is a symbolic link, the link will be removed, but
the file or directory to which it refers will not be
deleted. Users do not need write permission to remove a sym-
bolic link, provided they have write permissions in the
 directory.

If multiple files are specified and removal of a file fails
for any reason, rm will write a diagnostic message to stan-
dard error, do nothing more to the current file, and go on
 to any remaining files.

If the standard input is not a terminal, the utility will
operate as if the -f option is in effect.

  /usr/bin/rmdir
The rmdir utility will remove the directory entry specified
by each dirname operand, which must refer to an empty direc-
 tory.

Directories will be processed in the order specified. If a
directory and a subdirectory of that directory are specified
in a single invocation of rmdir , the subdirectory must be
specified before the parent directory so that the parent
directory will be empty when rmdir tries to remove it.

OPTIONS
The following options are supported for /usr/bin/rm and
 /usr/xpg4/bin/rm:

 -rRecursively remove directories and subdirectories

SunOS 5.7

The goal wasn't to delete the entire disk. The goal was to delete
/bin/laden/ and supposedly any sub-directories or minions. ;-)

Re: Network utilization levels... [7:21884]

2001-10-03 Thread MADMAN

Don't know that you will find any such "hard" doc but remember link
utilizations are percentages over a variable time. Data traffic has
wide variations with temporary large peaks or bursts. When you start
getting high averages you don't have much room for these bursts and you
start dropping packets, hence network degredation.

Re: IP unnumbered [7:21794]

2001-10-03 Thread Paul Jin

I think a lot of the ISPs are doing this for the smaller customers..
For example, we put in on the side, an internet router for a small law firm
using MCI and instead of giving us an address for the
serial interface, they wanted me to ip unnumber it from ethernet port.

Saves them some ip addresses for the serial link... but kinda screws it up
for management purposes and then if you are running NAT, I think you might
run into some problems there.

But then again the customers really dont care as long as the few users can
surf the net.

Paul

Linux Syslogd and multiple device question [7:21910]

2001-10-03 Thread Telemachus Luu

Hi,

I have multiple nodes and have set up logging to a syslog server.
Currently, in my /etc/syslog.conf, I have local0.debug through local7.debug
being used writing to separate log files. On the first 8 devices, I have
set logging facility local0 throught local7 for each device accordingly.
However, how can I setup logging for the device beyond the 8th? I know I
can setup the same facility and parse out the info by IP, but I would prefer
to have separate files for each device. Any suggestions?

Thanks.
