Terminal server

2000-08-15 Thread cv . perez

Hi all,

Can someone tell me whether it's possible to use the aux port connected to the
console port of another cisco router? I tried the same conf as if I was using
the asyn port but it failed. (transport input all, no exec)

Thanks, cvp.

Terminal Server

2000-05-16 Thread Sam Adams

I am getting a little tired of switching the roll cable between routers.
What's good and reasonably price solution to this problem?

Opinions welcomed.

Thanks.

Terminal Server Configuration

2001-01-12 Thread James Haynes

I have been following the links that have been posted on this site for CCIE
Lab study. One site in particular Fatkid.com has a section with sample
config's. One of the config's is for reverse telnet. I know from doing BCRAN
how this is supposed to work with modems.

It says at this site that you must configure the other devices in the LAB
using a terminal server ( the router ). Once you set up the asynchronous
ports I'm not seeing how they are all connected simultaneously to different
devices. Where are the physical connections? Are you connecting to the
console ports on the different devices?

No-one here has ever set up a router to do this sort of thing, thus I'm
getting blank stares all around. Any clarification of exactly whats
occurring physically here would be helpful.

terminal server flakey

2001-01-20 Thread Brian Lodwick

hi group,
I have configured a terminal server on a 2511. It works great in the
beginning, but then it starts to flake out on me. I'll try to report what
happens. I notice right when everything is powered up I can connect to all 8
of the routers connected using their hostname and it is exactly as I
expected. The issue normally occurs after I've been reverse telnetted into a
router for a little while then I back back out of that one and try to telnet
to another one and I can't get to it then after I can only get to a couple
of them. All of the connections are disconnected after I back out. It just
appears to be a glitch or possibly a timeout? Has anyone seen anything like
this before? The only way I can fix it is to reboot. I will outline the
config.

This may be the kicker I am using IOS 11.1 on the term. server. I am
planning to upgrade, but wanted to see if I was overlooking something.

All I did was on the terminal server I configured a host file for each
router calling them r1, r2, r3... using the loopback for the ip, and 200_
for the port. I have configured the lines with no passwords or timout
values, I only added transport input all for lines 0-8. Speeds are set to
9600.

On each of the other routers I have left the console line blank not even a
password is set.

Like I said everything works great in the beginning, but...
Thanks in advance guys!

2509 Terminal Server Problem

2001-02-05 Thread ramius

I have a 2509 connected via an OCTAL cable to a few console ports. When I
connect using 'telnet router1 2001' I get no command line, but the
connection says '.OPEN'. When I telnet to router1 and configure it,
console messages appear on the reverse telnet session, but still no command
prompt.
I have it configured just as it is here:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/793/access_dial/comm_server.html

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Terminal Server for beginners

2001-02-14 Thread Brian Lodwick

Group
I have been fighting with the performance of my terminal server for a few
weeks now. It works, and I have been using it, but like I said I have been
fighting with it. It seems to send characters to other ports when I haven't
initiated a connection to that port. The way I can tell this is when I get
onto that port it is responding to characters entered even though I haven't
entered anything. This is quite peculiar. I have looked at many books to see
if I am doing something wrong and the only indication was in Bruce Caslow's
book saying if your terminal server incorrectly shows active connections on
lines that don't have any connections established the command "modem host"
on the line config will fix this. Well this didn't fix mine for s*#@. I
finally figured out the way to fix mine was to add "modem inout" boom it
works like a charm. I am running 12.0.8 on this 2511. Maybe this is
something everyone already knew, but I didn't and maybe it will save someone
else some pain.

config t
ip host r1 10.0.0.1 2001
int loopback 0
ip address 10.0.0.1 255.255.255.0
exit
line 1 8
transport input all
modem inout
exec-timeout 0 0

other routers assure the exec-timeout is set to 0 0 on the console.

Re: terminal server flakey

2001-01-20 Thread Kevin Wigle

"I have configured the lines with no passwords or timout"

If you didn't do anything then by default, exec will time out after 10
minutes.

So if you got all 8 lines up its pretty easy to think that a few might be
standing there unused for 10 minutes while you're playing with the
others.

So you have to give the command "exec-timeout 0 0" which will disable
timeout completely.

from CCO - the font of all knowledge (and the first hit on my search on
exec-timeout)

Setting the EXEC Timeout Intervals
The EXEC command interpreter waits for a specified interval of time until
the user starts input. If no input is detected, the EXEC resumes the current
connection. If no connections exist, the EXEC returns the terminal to the
idle state and disconnects the incoming session.

To set this interval, use the exec-timeout line configuration subcommand.
The full syntax of the command follows.

exec-timeout minutes [seconds]
no exec-timeout
The argument minutes is the number of minutes, and the optional argument
seconds specifies additional interval time in seconds. The default interval
is ten minutes; an interval of zero specifies no time-outs.

The no exec-timeout subcommand removes the time-out definition. It is the
same as entering exec timeout 0.

Example:
This command sets an interval of 2 minutes, 30 seconds.

exec-timeout 2 30

This command sets an interval of 10 seconds:

exec-timeout 0 10

Every console (con 0) needs the command.

We just had this discussion on this list a few days ago

Terminal Server [7:5149]

2001-05-19 Thread Mark Rose

I have a 2511 set up as a terminal server According to the Cisco
documentation on Configuring a terminal server, the escape sequence is
Ctrl-Shift-6-x. This doesn't work. I can make the connection to "west" but I
cannot use the esc sequence to jump back to the 2511 (I am using
HyperTerminal with upgrade) or try to open a session with another router.
The esc seq gives me a blank line & if I hit return the west prompt appears
again. I am not sure if I am missing a command on the west router. Can
someone make a suggestion or steer me in the right direction? I would
appreciate the help?

TIA

Terminal Server [7:56454]

2002-10-29 Thread Frank Dagenhardt
Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on a good 8 port terminal server. I
would prefer to get cisco but the cost is a little much. Does anyone have
experience with a different brand that does the job at close to the same
quality?

Thank you in advance,

Frank

Re: Terminal Server for beginners

2001-02-14 Thread Kevin Wigle

I just installed a 2611 with a 16 port async NM for our lab.

I have a 2509 in my personal lab and it works flawlessly.

However the 2611 seems to get more "noise" and it would seize a few lines
and I would have to clear them and disconnect them before I could attach
again.

Looking at Lab 1 in the All-In-One CCIE Lab Study Guide for help I read that
this situation could also be helped by putting "no exec" on the lines. This
prevents spurious stuff from automatically starting an exec process.
Although the command looks like it won't let you connect, just hitting the
enter key and boom - it works fine.

So for you:

line 1 8
transport input all
exec-timeout 0 0
no exec

This indeed stopped all the foolishness and it works just fine now.

Well I'm sure that is some nice reading, and I know what the modem inout
command is supposed to be used for, but I was saying by using this command
on my terminal server I cleared up the glitch I encountered. Aparently there
is another way to do this using the "no exec" command.

Re: terminal server flakey ~fixed

2001-01-20 Thread Brian Lodwick

Group,
I really appreciate Kevin's help I have implemented the exec-timeout 0 0
into the lines.
I just wanted to add another note for everyone on the list reading this.
I have been using Caslow's second edition (which I am very impressed with so
far) for my lab study. There is an additional note listed in Bruce's book
saying "With many versions of the IOS Terminal Server configurations may
result in lines listed as being used when they never have been used. A
remedy to this problem is adding the "Modem host" command in line
configuration mode in addition to the "transport input all" command.
Along with Kevin's advice and this additional command sessions shown are
accurate and don't timeout. It's working great. Thanks Kevin and Bruce.

Re: Terminal Server [7:3939]

2001-05-10 Thread Kevin Wigle

We use this in our lab.

You have a few choices depending on how many lines you want.

NM-16A: Sixteen-port Asynchronous Network Module
The 16-port asynchronous serial network module supports 16 asynchronous
serial interfaces at speeds up to 134 kbps. The 16 ports are cabled with two
custom "octopus" cables, each terminating in 8 ports, each with an option of
physical endpoints, including RJ-45 and DB-25 connectors.

NM-32A: Thirty Two-port Asynchronous Network Module
The 32-port asynchronous serial network module supports 32 asynchronous
serial interfaces at speeds up to 134 kbps. The 32 ports are cabled with
four custom "octopus" cables, each terminating in 8 ports, each with an
option of physical endpoints, including RJ-45 and DB-25 connectors.

Then the cable assemblies: CAB-OCTAL-ASYNC has 8 lines

The NM-16A requires 2, the NM-32A requires 4.

Re: Terminal Server [7:3939]

2001-05-10 Thread Andy Harding

if you really only have a switch and a router then you could get away with
the WIC-2TA/S with two CAB-SS-232-MT cables and a pair of standard console
cables. If you just want to console from the router to the switch the use
the AUX port with a standard console cable.

mid-range would be the 4-port NM4A/S, or the 8-port NM8A/S

bit cheaper than an $2,000 (list) NM-16?

silly me.. didn't read to the end of the question.

I wouldn't buy a NM-16A for two ports either.

Re: Terminal Server [7:3939]

2001-05-11 Thread Andy Harding

what you will have is a Smart-Serial to RS-232 cable. The cable will have a
25-pin RS-232 connector on the end - you will need a 25-pin to RJ-45
converter (supplied with 2600 routers), and then plug into your regular
console cable.

check the following - watch for word wrap:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/access/acs_mod/cis2600/wan_m
od/conntwan.htm#xtocid27353

I'm not 100% certain which way around the DCE/DTE works in this instance -
if console ports are DCE the you need a CAB-SS-232-FC, if DTE then
CAB-SS-232-MT. Can someone clarify this?

thanks

Andy

Re: Terminal Server [7:5149]

2001-05-19 Thread Brad McConnell

Mark,

When you get the blank line, then press enter and end up back at the west
router, do you have a "Resuming connection to xxx..." line before west's
router prompt? If not, I dont think the escape sequence is being
acknowledged. When you input the command, do ctrl-shift-6, then release all
3 keys and quickly hit 'x'. Kind of a moot point here, but in some cases
(say an AIX box with a 3151 terminal), only the left ctrl key can be used..

Another thing to try would be hitting the spacebar when you get the blank
line instead of enter. If the escape sequence IS working, then the enter
key is taking you back again, and spacebar may cause the prompt to display.

RE: Terminal Server [7:5149]

2001-05-19 Thread Mark Rose

The sequence of hitting ctrl-shift-6 then release all 3 keys and quickly hit
'x' works. I go back to the 2511 & can change sessions. This brought up
another question. Once I get a session running on a second or third router,
how do you terminate a session while leaving the others (or just the
original telnet to the access router running).

As always the help is appreciated by all people who help with advice.

2001-05-19 Thread Brad McConnell

Say you connect to west, then jump back to the 2511 and connect to east.
When you jump back to the 2511 again, do a 'who' or 'show sess' and you
should see both listed. If you type the number in front of west's entry,
you'll be back on your previously-established connection to west. If you
want to close just one session off, use "disconnect #", where # is the
session you'd like to kill, as it displays in 'show session'.

If you ever try to initate a connection over reverse telnet and get a
connection refused, do a 'show line' to find then line, then 'clear line #'
to reset the connection.

On the chance that you're asking a different question, I'll go down this
road as well .. :)

R1 --> R2 --> R3

If R1 is your access server, and you use reverse-telnet to R2, then telnet
from R2 to R3, the escape sequence will land you back at R1. If you want to
hop back to R2 instead of R3, you'll need to change the escape character on
all of your secondary routers, such as R2. This can be done with the global
command "escape-character" (url below). Typically, not worth the hassle, at
least not for me...

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ssr83/rpc_r/48119.h
tm#xtocid2328465

If you're in a lab with router names such as R1, R2, R3, R4, etc., you can
save yourself quite a bit of time by initiating the connections in order
before you begin your lab scenario (ie: reverse to R1, then hop back and go
to R2, etc). This way, your show session output will map "1" to R1, "2" to
R2, etc. This lets you jump from router to router by keystroke, instead of
constantly having to hit show sess and remember what # equals what router..

Hope that helps,

-Brad McConnell.

Apologies on the error -- you'll want "where" to mimic the output of "show
session", not "who". At this point I'm a convert to the newer command...

Re: Terminal Server [7:5149]

2001-05-19 Thread Tony Medeiros

Do a "sho line" or "sho users" and see what line number is attached to the
session you are want to end. Then just do a "clear line (line number)"
answer "yes" to the prompt and there you go.

Remember, The first reverse telnet session you start is 1 and is numbered
accendingly as you open more sessions. openning the sessions in an
intuitive manner helps keep track of what line is which. I.e. Open session
to router 1 first, router 2 second, etc. This way all you have to type is a
"2" to reopen the session to router 2. Or "clear line 2' to close that
session.

Little trick I learned for getting around quickly in the CCIE lab.

Telnetted into the terminal server - 5 (vty 0 4)

reverse-telnetted from the terminal server into the attached router console,
only one at a time.

telnetted into router using vty virtual terminal lines - 5 with
non-Enterprise IOS, many more with Enterprise IOS versions

Only one person at a time. Unless you hook one line to the console, and a
second to the aux port.

Cyclades Terminal Server [7:28126]

2001-12-04 Thread Gaz

Thank-you to those that pointed me in the direction of the Cyclades Terminal
Server.
My problem at the time was dial up access to a site with 10 cisco devices
which needed console access and I said I would let people know how it went.

Worried me a little when it arrived and configuration seemed to be CLI and
worst of all for a Unix-fool like me, its Linux based.
Nobody is worse with Linux than me.

Luckily, after minimal configuration there is a Web based GUI which does a
lot of tasks and the manual scraped the rest.

Took me a full day to configure it for:
modem access to it,
dial in with SSH v2,
authenticate with Radius,
and connect through any one of the other 15 ports to the Cisco devices.

Long time I know but 3000 pounds sterling cheaper than an equivalent Cisco
set-up (Cisco don't cater for SSH very well)

Thanks again

Gaz

Terminal Server setup [7:33439]

2002-01-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

All,

I have a home lab setup and all the devices in the lab I can reverse telnet
to from my 2509, except for a 1924EN switch. When I try to reverse telnet
into this switch I never get a prompt back it just sort of hangs. I can't
seem to find anything on CCO in reference to this. I am sure some of you
guys have setup this same type setup before any help would be appreciated.
This is really confusing me something that seems so simple. I have 7 other
devices that I am able to reverse telnet into except for this one.
Maybe if you can point me to some docs or provide a sample config that
would be greatly appreciated.

password recovery via terminal server

Is anyone aware of a method to send a break to a router during boot via a

remotly. I tried changing the break sequence on the TS and sending the
router ctrl^x as well as all the standard break sequences but have had no
luck.

What is the function of Terminal server.

What is mean by reverse telnet? What is the purpose? whether only terminal
server can be configured as the reverse telnet.

RE: ´ð¸´: 2509 Terminal Server

2000-07-12 Thread Westmoreland, Alexis

Hi Hou, I am a Ms, not a Sir. When I use the config from Caslow's book I can
do a reverse telnet by simply entering r1 thru r8 the 1st time. Then you do
a "ctrl, shift, ^, then x" to return to the termserver. After that you only
have to enter the session # (i.e. 1 for r1, 2 for r2, etc..).

However, I did erase my config from the terminal server (2509) and loaded
the config that you indicated in your note. However when I tried the
following, I got the following error.

termserver#telnet 127.0.0.1 2001
% Invalid IP address

Maybe there is a step missing. I know there is usually more than one way to
do something and I am certainly always open to learn another way.

Dear Sir,
The 'loopback' interface and 'ip host' command is only to make config easy.
It do not need to config.

Terminal Server/Digiboard [7:18422]

2001-09-04 Thread Ouellette, Tim

Good morning group.

After many attempts (and subsequent failures) at trying to configure my
xyplex terminal server, I've put it aside and looked at other alternatives.
I didn't want to spend the $800 or so on a 2509-2511 or $350 on a cisco 500.
I was wondering if anyone had ever used a digiboard to add 4 more com ports
to a pc. I was looking at using such a beast in my home CCIE lab and
thought you good folks might know of some caveats to doing so. Thanks for
your time.

Terminal Server issue [7:55715]

Gang

I have a 2511 terminal server running IOS 12.1 (5). The problem I'm having
is everytime I go from one router to another I have to clear the line of the
previous router before being able to access it again. Is there some command
that I'm missing that will allow me to just access any router connected to
the terminal server without having to clear the line everytime? Any help
would be greatly appreciated!!

Terminal server configuration [7:48678]

2002-07-12 Thread Dan Penn

I am trying to get my 2621 with an nm-16a working so that I can allow a
few people I study with to use my home lab. I don't want to give them
the full enable secret password because then someone could remove my
configuration. This terminal server also gives me my home network
connectivity.basically what I'm saying is I don't want somebody to be
able to change the enable secret, or shut my interfaces down on the
terminal server itself. I made an enable level 2, and did this under
it: privilege exec level 2 telnet. When I telnet to the terminal
server, then do enable level 2 etc it logs in fine. But it won't lookup
the "ip host blah blah" when I type the name of the host I'm trying to
connect to.

Is there something stupid that I am missing here?

Can anyone help?

Here is a full config just to show everyone what I've got going on here:

I had to go (ctrl+shift+6)+X to go back to TermServer prompt.

At TermServer prompt, I did "sh line" again.

TermServer#sh line

And typed r1. It still showed this @!#$.

TermServer#r1

I just made longer message than I intended to. But since I am struggling to
get this to work, I want to try every possible way.

I hope I showed you better.

Any input would be appreciated

Thanks.

Shorcuts for Terminal Server [7:6310]

2001-05-29 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Anyone got the keystrokes/shortcuts for moving around a rack via a 2511
terminal server fluidly and effortlessly?

I know about Cntrl Shift 6 x to jump off a live session and reverse telnet
to another router.

How do I disconnect altogether, so that I do not keep on having to clear
line all the time?

Can I jump back on a router I have already opened a session with, without
having to type pw or clear line again?.

My Indian mates gave me a good idea to open up a different telnet session
for each router on my PC thus eliminating all the keystrokes and just use
the mouse to bring the live router to the forefront.
The only problem with this is that I am getting lazy and I am unsure whether
I will be allowed to use this technique in the lab. Any ideas?

Thanks

2523 as Terminal Server [7:7673]

2001-06-08 Thread Daniel Cotts

It works. Just configure the sync/async port(s) as async. Then the
corresponding line will appear. Configuration then proceeds exactly as one
would do on a 2509. Most likely a 2523 could be used as a Frame Switch and a
terminal server. Cost of cables is an issue.
Cable was RS-232 DTE PN 72-0793-01. DB-60 to DB-25 male. It was
connected to the female DB-25 to RJ-45 adapter that comes with the
console kit. Console rollover cable used between it and the console of the
target router.
Also successfully tried with a RS-232 DCE cable, male DB-25 adapter and
rollover cable.
Config extract follows:
2523 as a terminal server

ip host r1 2008 2.2.2.2
ip host r2 2009 2.2.2.2

Terminal server tacacs+ question [7:34607]

2002-02-06 Thread Kumari, Hannes

Hi All,

Im tring to configure 2509 (with 8 async ports) as a terminal server
so that
I could access my network devices via console port.
I have my default tacacs policy in place but in addition to that I
would like to
have sepparate policy for third parties ( IT depatment needs console acces
to servers aswell ).
And now the problem, when tring to reverse-telnet like this :

telnet 10.10.10.10 2001

It first checks the tacas for authentication, but I have no intention to
auth. 3`rd parties thougt tacacs but
have created local usernames/password in 2509
How should the config look like in order it to check local
usernames/password first befor tacacs auth.

---
my current conf in 2509

aaa now-model
aaa authentication login default tacacs+ enable
aaa authentication enable default tacacs+ enable
aaa authorization exec default tacacs+ if-authenticated
...
username kala password 0 kala

HElP! Xyplex terminal server. [7:17384]

2001-08-27 Thread Ouellette, Tim

Good monday morning all!

I recently purchased a Xyplex 1600 Series terminal server. The box cost me
$30 without a flash card. Supposedly I can load it via the network with a
rarp/bootp server. Anyone know a working rarp/bootp server? I tried to
force down the OS with hyperterm but was unsuccessful and the only output I
see from the xyplex box is "requesting network load" and I can't seem to
send down the OS to it. Has anyone here in this group ever worked with such
a device and had it load successfully?

If anyone has any hints, please let me know. Thanks all!

Tim

awesome! Now go grab a copy of linux and install it! : )

>>> "Gaz"  12/04/01 05:17PM >>>

You read my mind. I'm a convert. Formatting a partition as we speak.
Even bought a book - I'll probably even buy another one once I realise the
first one is too advanced :-)

The feeling that I've started too late and ignored it well enough up until
now kept me away from Linux/Unix, but finished my CCNP and need a change
rather than a rest.
This old dog needs a new trickhopefully it won't be to roll over and die

Terminal server for sale [7:33094]

2002-01-24 Thread Woods, Randall, SOBUS

Hi all. I have a 508-CS Terminal server that I'm selling if anyone's
interested. I was going to sell it on ebay but figured I would offer here
first. It works great for reverse telnet into routers. Just like the 2509
but no serial interfaces. I needed more than 8 ports so I upgraded to the
516-CS. I will sell it here for $225 Plus shipping. let me know if you need
any more info.

2002-01-28 Thread Daniel Cotts

1) 1900. I seem to remember having to add "no exec" to get a switch to
reply.
The assumption being that you can successfully connect a PC to the console
port of the switch.
2) 5500 with a Sup III - You can also use a straight patch cord from the aux
port of the 2509.

You might be able to find in the archives a discussion about this. I put the
pin-outs down at the time. Probably 10-12 months ago. Some of the 1924's
(early ones with DB9) had a specific cable.
There is a funny loop in there somewhere. Have a search, if you can't find
it I'll see if I can dig a cable out and pin it out again.

Cheers,

Gaz

Re: Terminal Server setup [7:33439]

2002-01-28 Thread Paul Lalonde

To do reverse telnet to some Cat switches (with the RJ45 port), you need to
"hardwire" pins 1 and 8 on the Cisco rollover cable. I had the same problem
with a 2924XL and this solved the problem.

To do this, just "nick" the side of the rollover cable on pin 1 and pin 8 --
just enough to expose the conductor. Then solder a small strand of wire
between pin 1 and pin 8.

Should solve the problem.

You are probably using the terminal program that comes with NT4? It does

Is anyone aware of a method to send a break to a router during boot via a
terminal server? I'd like to be able to do access rommon or the boot loader
remotly. I tried changing the break sequence on the TS and sending the
router ctrl^x as well as all the standard break sequences but have had no
luck.

Thanks

Terminal server reverse telnet ? [7:41496]

2002-04-15 Thread Mike Sweeney

I would swear I've seen this answered here before but I can seem to find it
now that I need it.

The short version is I have a terminal server connected to a router. The
router is config'ed on the AUX port for a modem. I reverse telnet into the
router(normal) from the terminalserver. Then I need to reverse telnet to the
modem on the router. So far so good. The problem is when I need to pause and
drop out of the AUX session back to the router. The normal shift 6 x kicks
me all the way back to the terminalserver and not just the router that is
being worked on. I know there is a way around this but I dont remember
it::whimper::

If someone would be kind enough to post an answer, link etc.. Meanwhile I'll
keep looking on my own.

THanks!!

MikeS

Craig,

I use the STS10 at home and it works great. I got it off ebay for $70 about
2 years ago and the only problem I had was getting the pinouts right. (it's
not the traditional rollover) Unfortunately, those boxes are EOL and seem
hard to come by. You might want to look at xyplex, they have some decent
term servers and based on a quick review on ebay they seem to come pretty
cheap. The Cisco 516-cs's seem to be more prevelant than the STS10's, but
the prices are generally around $300 bucks which is probably overkill for
what you need.

Another option is a CS-508. It is an old model Cisco terminal server with 8
lines. I have a CS-516 and it works fine as a terminal server. You can find
them on ebay in the $200 range for the 8 port.

Terminal Server load balancing [7:44002]

2002-05-13 Thread Cisco Breaker

Hi,

We have implemented load balancing between 5 microsoft terminal servers. The
problem is when I looked at the second server I see 5 people connected but
from the CSS view there is only 2 people connected. We tried this example
with clearing counters on CSS and restarting all terminal servers to make
sure everyone disconnected. After that again we check the statistics and
nothing changed. For ex. Cisco shows 4 Microsoft shows 8.

All the statistic gathered by issuing sh service summary and sh summary are
not accurate as Microsoft Terminal Server Managers.

What can be the problem?

Any help will be appreciated?

Best regards,

RE: Terminal Server/Digiboard [7:18422]

2001-09-04 Thread Matthew Crane

I and my team tried Xyplex & Digiboard as alternatives for some very
expensive pieces of kit from Compaq & Cisco in the mobil;e telecoms arena
for IVR, TAPI or other voice to data applications. After a lot of painful
experiences with both our conclusion was to order a skip for the kit. Its
all about time & money spend the money on good kit and just accept that the
service you get is tolerable. Cheap alternatives waste more time & effort in
trying to get them to work and then as with both the above you find they do
not quiote do what you were told they would do and the reseller and
manufactuirer just don't give a stuff about you. Its a case of false economy.

Forgot to add that support for Xyplex & Digiboards is absolutely rubbish. 4
to 5 days even witha support contract for kit replacement, no software
support at all you get the picture. Oh and just in case you were wandering I
do not have any allegiance to network kit manufacturers.

Re: Terminal Server issue [7:55715]

Is this a case where you escape from one router back to the terminal server?
If so, the line is still active - if you do a 'show session' you will see
which hosts are active. If you escape back to the terminal server and want
to return to an active session, just type the number of the session from the
above output, or just hit enter on a blank line to get back to the last
active session.

Greeting all,

I was setting up a 2620 with 16 ports modem bank (16AM) to use in my

modem port that it's RJ11. Do you guys have any ideas if I can make a
cable to take advantage of the situation?

Thanks...Nabil

Interesting terminal server issue [7:48247]

2002-07-06 Thread Don Pezet

Hey guys,

I have a home lab setup for my CCIE studies and I have been bumping
into a random issue with my terminal server. I have a 2509 that I use with
an Octal cable to connect to my routers and switches. Frequently I will see
a line go hot without me having initiated a session (I see an asterick by
the line in 'show lines'). If I clear the line using 'clear line x' and then
open a session to that device I will get about a hundered lines of trash
thrown to the end device as input. Once the trash scrolls by and errors out,
I have regular prompt access to the router with no further issues. This is
not an all the time thing, but it is fairly frequent.

Here's my setup on the terminal server:

ip host r1 2001 1.1.1.1
ip host r2 2002 1.1.1.1
ip host r3 2003 1.1.1.1
ip host r4 2004 1.1.1.1
ip host s1 2005 1.1.1.1
ip host s2 2006 1.1.1.1
!
interface Loopback0
 ip address 1.1.1.1 255.0.0.0
!
line 1 8
 transport input all

And here's the config for one of my end routers:

line con 0
 transport input none

I'm using an authentic Cisco octal cable that appears to be shielded and
since the garbage only occurs randomly and at initial connection I have
ruled out interference.

Any help is appreciated

Thanks,

Don

Re: Terminal server configuration [7:48678]

2002-07-12 Thread Chuck

a couple of things - you set the privilege level very low. most commands
have a default level of 7 or so IIRC.

you could do login local, and associate privilege level with the local
login. set that level at 1 or 2. set the enable level at 10.

or you could change the privilege level of only those commands you want the
user to see to a much lower level. I think really all they need is show
hosts, show sessions, maybe show users, and the clear line functions.

Re: Terminal server configuration [7:48678]

2002-07-12 Thread Penn Daniel

Okay here is what i have now Chuck:

I did
2621(config)#priv exec level 8 show line
2621(config)#priv exec level 8 clear line
2621(config)#priv exec level 8 show session
2621(config)#priv exec level 8 show host
And assigned a password to level 8

Then telneted in, used the telnet password, did "enable 8". Did a show
host. It shows me the hosts, and this is what i get:

2621#sh host
Default domain is not set
Name/address lookup uses static mappings

Host Port Flags Age Type Address(es)
s3550 2040 (perm, OK) 1 IP192.169.1.4

Then, when I do s3550, I get:

2621#s3550
% Unknown command or computer name, or unable to find computer address

Do I need something to allow reverse telnet?

I appreicate the time,
Dan

Okay, figured it out.

Imagine this:

If you have
vty 0 4
 transput output none

that reverse telnet doesn't work =)

Thanks for the help anyways Chuck!

RE: Terminal server configuration [7:48678]

2002-07-16 Thread Mike Sweeney

Dan- put together a cheapo linux box and put a TACACS server on it. Now you
can go nuts with who gets what. Use webmin for a GUI interface to manage the
Linux box and you are set.

Or you can do what I do alot. I bought a copy of Virtual PC for Windows off
ebay for under 70 bucks. Install it on a workstation and run a virtual PC
session with either ACS running on a virtual session or Linux running on a
virtual session. This works very well for the occasional use application.

Terminal server not able to Reverse Telnet

2000-11-03 Thread Manishkumar Patel

Dear All,
Hi!
I have setup 2511 as Terminal Server, with the Octal RJ-45 cables connected to
Console port of 4 2500 Routers. During a day the reverse Telnet works fine,
but when I try to Telnet on next day morning, it says " CONNECTION REFUSED",
What can be the Problem & solution?

It works fine after Rebooting the Terminal Server.
Your help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance...Have a nice weekend.
Regards
MK

Fwall & Win2k Terminal server Clients [7:1598]

2001-04-23 Thread Edmund Woltynski

Hi Folks

I am trying to get my head around how to poke holes in a router access
list with a Firewall feature set (1600 series) to allow a Win2k terminal
server client to access a remote TS. From the packet decode the server
uses TCP =3389, but the client grabs a number in the range1560 upwards
ie a new port per session - I can't seem to nail down a range. There has
to be more than just this one port 3389 on the server side considering
Citrix has a few to cater for.

Does anyone know what the range is - or can nudge me in the right
direction in solving this problem.

I recall an email on the topic about 6-7 months ago, but can seem to
locate it in the archives,
I have searched through CCO - all the cookbooks, TAC tips, etc and the
MS knowledge base to little avail.

Any small hint to will be appreciated.

Thanks

Regards
  Edmund Woltynski

NAT and MS Terminal Server [7:1765]

2001-04-24 Thread Kim Seng

I have a MS Terminal server (Port 3389) inside a
private subnet. I am using NAT from the router. I am
using a Static NAT access list:

ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.1.25 3389
200.200.200.1 3389

I still can not access to the terminal server from the
Internet. Can some one tell me what I do wrong.

Many thanks in advance.

Kim.
